IN order properly to evaluate the data related to geomagnetic surveys, it is highly desirable to have all the available information concerning the magnetic properties of the, involved media. This is true of surface as well as subsurface formations and becomes of increasing importance as advancement in instrumental and interpretative technique permits the analysis of relatively slight magnetic reflections of buried masses. Since the magnitude and areal distribution of the usually complex resultant magnetic field at the surface of the earth is a function of the susceptibility1 of the involved matter, it necessarily follows that susceptibility determinations will afford valuable data for geophysical correlation. The present method was developed to meet the need for routine analysis of specimens in the geomagnetic laboratory where it was felt that general utility, ruggedness, ease of manipulation and reproducibility of results was of greater importance than extreme sensitivity.

The hammer drill rightly receives the credit for having made the one-man drill possible, and so many economies seem possible through the proper application of different types of hammer drills to various mining, quarrying, and excavating operations, that an indication of the 'economies effected by the New Jersey Zinc Co. at its Franklin mines may be of pertinent interest. When this company commenced its trials of hammer drills in 1907, these tools had not been developed to one-fourth the capacity and refinement which they have at present. At that time it was frequently stated that such a small tool, drilling holes of less diameter than the reciprocating rock drill, could not drill enough holes in a shift to permit the placing of sufficient explosive to break a tonnage of ore comparable with that produced by the "rock drills;" that the placing of small holes inclined upward, at angles steeper than 40' above the horizontal, could not be expected to produce results equal to the large flat, wet or dry, holes in the breasted back of an overhand stope, and would only shatter the ground so as to make the back unsafe. In spite of these adverse opinions, the hammer drills first showed their superiority over both heavy and light reciprocating drills in raising and in stoping, and then in drifting and quarry work. As a result, all of the reciprocating drills at the Franklin mines were scrapped three years ago, all of the mining work being accomplished with increased efficiency, as shown in detail in this article. With the advent of the hammer drill in this property, it was considered advisable to make comparative tests of all the tools accessible, and it has since been the policy to investigate the merits of any advance of the drilling art in order to get the maximum amount of work from the tools. The necessity of devising some means of standardizing drill tests, and of measuring the consumption of compressed air as well as the drilling speed, was early realized. The principal events in the oil and gas operations for Louisiana during 1933 have been the rapid development of the Converse field in Sabine Parish, the discovery of three new salt domes, one in North Louisiana and two in South Louisiana, increased development in the Iowa field on the Calcasieu-Jefferson Davis Parish line, and extensive geophysical operations over a wide territory. Other miscellaneous events worthy of mention are the continued leasing of prospective oil lands over a wide area, extension of production at the East Hackberry field, Cameron Parish, discovery of deep sands at Caillou Island, Terrebonne Parish, and the completion of several important wildcats. Despite proration, oil production showed a substantial increase during 1933. The total output for this area was 25,599,802 bbl. as compared with 22,507,387 bbl. during 1932. North Louisiana There were 111 oil wells and 47 gas wells completed in North Louisiana during 1933 as compared with 109 oil wells and 33 gas wells during 1932. North Louisiana oil production decreased approximately 692,625 bbl. in 1933 from its 1932 figure. The normal decline in the old fields was partly offset by increased production at the Zwolle and Converse fields in Sabine Parish. Acid treatment of wells in the Zwolle, Converse and Monroe fields was highly successful. The method of application has been described by H. K. Shearer, Geologist, Pelican Natural Gas Co., as fo1lows:l With tubing in the hole and standing valve removed, the casing is filled with oil to the surface. The limestone solvent is pumped in through the tubing, at the same time bleeding off enough oil from the casinghead to equal the volume contained in the tubing plus the volume of open hole to be treated. The amount of solvent used in most of the wells treated was 1000 gal., which is enough to dissolve about 11 cu. ft. of chalk or limestone. After the computed amount of oil is bled off, the casinghead is closed and the remainder of the solvent is pumped in at whatever pressure is necessary to force it into the oil-producing horizon. A proposed method of drilling utilizes sequential detonation of two types of explosive charges delivered to the hole by a conventional drilling fluid through pipe. A shaped charge first produces a long thin hole. A second charge, called a gauging charge, is pumped into the thin hole, explodes, and enlarges it to full gauge. In one suggested configuration, the explosives are contained in cylindrical capsules 4- to 5-ft long. A drilling head is positioned 2- to 3-ft off bottom. When a capsule is pumped to the bottom of the hole and stops, pressure inside the drill pipe increases and differential pressure detonates the explosive. Primacord along the length of the capsule disintegrates the capsule. The debris circulates out of the hole with the drilling fluid. The gauging-charge action was examined using 2-ft cubes of Berea sandstone. The sandstone (18 per cent porosity) was vacuum-saturated with water and surrounded by concrete. To prevent reflected tensile pulses, the acoustical impedance of the concrete matched that of the sandstone. A 750-psig pressure was applied to a drilling fluid within a shaped-charge-formed hole before detonating the gauging charge. In these tests, 190 gm of rock were removed for each gram of explosive detonated. A similar series of experiments on low-porosity (0.40 per cent) metamorphic limestone provided a more rigorous test. Extensive fracturing from the gauging-charge action prevented an estimate of the volume of the expanded hole. The diameter of the hole was irregular, ranging from about 2 to 4 in, or about fivefold larger than the hole created by the shaped charge. INTRODUCTION In the past, explosives have found a varied but somewhat limited use in the oil field. An early well stimulation technique, still in use today, in vo lves shooting ni troglycerin to en large the borehole and to increase matrix permeability near the wellbore. Bullets and jets are now the conventional method of perforating casing and tubing. Detonations are frequently used to "back off" or "shoot off" stuck pipe and, of course, seismo-graphic work has long depended on explosive-generated pulses to find attractive earth structures. Efforts to use explosives in drilling operations have received limited examinations1-3 which, in one respect, is surprising because explosives offer one way to transmit large amounts of energy directly to the bottom of the hole. Recently, Ostrovskii l described a Russian method of drilling with explosives that utilizes small capsules containing explosives which are pumped into the mud stream to the bottom of a borehole. As the capsules leave the end of the drill pipe, a detonation mechanism is armed. Impact detonates the explosive. In another configuration, two liquids (an oxidizing agent and fuel) in the capsule are separated by a frangible membrane. Separately, the liquids are nonexplosive. Near the bottom of the drill pipe, the capsule passes through a narrow constriction which ruptures the membrane. The mixing of the liquids produces an explosive. Impact is again used to detonate the explosive. About the time Ostrovskii was developing his method, Humble Oil & Refining Co. was independently doing research on another explosive drilling concept based on the sequential detonation of two types -of explosive charges. The proposed technique consisted of alternately pumping a shaped charge and then a "gauging charge" down a well. The shaped charge should drill a long, tapered hole, and the gauging charge should expand it to full gauge. This paper presents the visualized drilling concept and gives results of laboratory work which showed that sequential firing of charges can form hole at an attractive charge-to-rock removal ratio. An important finding was that increased environmental pressure, which is to be expected in wells, increases rock removal efficiency of the gauging charge.

MUCH information concerning pegmatites which was thought to be true a few years ago has been proved false, and what is now actually known about some pegmatites is not true of many others. The erratic and seemingly unpredictable structure and variable composition of this class of mineral deposits has been widely emphasized. Even parts of the same pegmatite body exhibit marked differences in texture, mineral composition, width, and attitude. Constructive geological thinking in respect to pegmatites now aims to establish general laws rather than to stress the confusing diversity of features having no special economic significance.

INTRODUCTION The western USA contains significant coal reserves in seams 10 feet or more in thickness which lie too deep for surface mining. As part of a demonstration of the use of two legged shield supports in the United States, Kaiser Steel Corporation, under contract to the US government used the longwall method to mine a ten foot thick coal seam in New Mexico. Caliper type shield supports and double drum shearers were used in three longwall panels. During the test, technical, production, and safety data were collected to objectively evaluate the performance of the shields in mining the thick coal seam. This paper presents discussions of practical operating experience and summary statistics to aid the mining industry in planning longwall mines in similar conditions.

The performance of the nine 5.5 m diameter x 6.4 m mills (18 x 21 ft) initially installed at Bougainville Copper Ltd. did not meet the laboratory and pilot plant derived design expectations as measured by Bond Work Index. During the post-commissioning period, inefficient grinding of coarse material resulted in a build-up of large circulating loads and led to reduced throughputs because of pump and cyclone overloading. Installation of larger pumps and cyclones and development of an improved circuit control philosophy alleviated materials handling problems and permitted higher tonnages to be attained. Since 1977, plant throughput has been increased by installation of three additional mills. These are 0.9 m (2.9 ft) longer than the other nine and have a higher capacity. Developments in classification and mill speed-up, together with a finer ball mill feed size and substantial improvements to mill availability (99% in 1982) have further increased plant capacity. There is a continuing emphasis on improving grinding circuit efficiency in terms of throughput/grind. Current development work includes trials of graded ball charges, different liner profiles, and assessment of scalping/regrind proposals.

THE remarkable outflow of natural gas recently developed in Western Pennsylvania, and along the valley of the Ohio and its tributaries, has called attention to an important series of patents for improvements in glass-fnrnaces and the manufacture of glass, which the brothers Siemens have made since 1872. The basement-patent of this series, is No. 127,806 of the U. S. Patent office, and is of date June 11th, 1872. This has been followed by eleven other patents (including one re-issue), all for improvements in glass-furnaces, or methods of manufacture, of which the latest is of date July 11th, 1882. Nine of these patents were issued in 1880-82. The following is the list of these patents, in order of dates, viz.: 1872. June 11th. No. 127,806 (U. THE two earlier papers in this series1,2 presented data on the rate of diffusion of carbon and of manganese in gamma iron. Apart from their scientific interest, these [] data are needed chiefly in order to treat data on carburization, on the rate of formation of pearlite, and on the rate of austenizing in a quantitative way. 1,2,9,10 In the present investigation rates of diffusion of nickel in -?-Fe over wide temperature and concentration ranges have been determined, and the effects of carbon, of impurities, and of grain size on these rates have been studied. Claussen,3 using the data of Fry,4 has calculated the diffusion coefficient of nickel [ ] in -?-Fe as 9.2 X 10-11 sq. cm. per sec. at 1200T., but had no data from which to calculate the variation of D with concentration, temperature, and percentage of carbon. METHOD AND MATERIALS Method.-Nickel was diffused along the axis of a cylindrical specimen across a concentration gradient, concentration-penetration curves were determined and D values calculated from Grube or Matano solutions.5 Details of the method are given

THE need for more efficient utilization of labor in the metal-mining industry has been the subject of several recent editorials in the mining press, and one attractive possibility for such improvement lies in the designing of future milling plants particularly with economy of man-power in mind. We are accustomed to think of mill design as the selection and coordinated arrangement of process equipment, but if labor is to be efficiently utilized it must be given early consideration in planning the new mill. There are three good reasons for economizing in labor: (I) to reduce costs, not only in the form of wages but also in housing, hospital, welfare, and other obligations that a company accepts when a new man is added to the payroll; (2) to prepare for recurrent periods of manpower shortage, during which a well-designed plant can manage to get along with skeleton crews; (3) because a milling plant that must depend upon an inordinately large labor force for its operation and maintenance is certain to be inefficient in other respects, for many of the shortcomings in design that make necessary the excessive use of labor are generally not corrected merely by having too many men. A simple example of this is a poorly designed ore-feeding system: if this is inadequate to the extent that one man must be constantly unclogging feed chutes, it may help the situation to put two men or three at this task instead of one, but the feed rate will still be inconstant. First of the factors that affect labor saving is the location of the mill. This is often determined by transportation costs alone, and as a result the mill may be placed close to the mine regardless of the nature of the terrain. The designer must then adapt his layout to the conditions, favorable or not. This happens often at small properties, where capital investment may seem more important than operating expense. In most instances, however, a mill site carefully selected for the advantages it gives the designer in laying out the plant is the most economical in the long run, even if it involves a slight increase in cost of ore haulage. Given some freedom of choice, the design engineer may be able to find just the piece of ground that provides the proper gradient for the needs of the flowsheet, permits installation of essential yards and trackage, and perhaps supplies an excellent site for a tailing dam. Further justification for having placed the mill not too close to the mine sometimes emerges only years later as an opportunity to treat ores from other properties. When it is known from the beginning that the new mill will serve a number of scattered mines, a free choice of mill site is naturally stimulated. A generalized rate equation for the reduction of iron oxide was derived from which two particular equations were obtained: one for rate controlled by the transportation of gas, the other for rate controlled by the phase-boundary reaction. Pellets of pure ferric oxide having diameters of 8.5 to 17.5 mm and a density of 4.8 g per cm3 were prepared and reduced by hydrogen at 750° to 900°C. From the analysis of data obtairzed, it was observed that neither the phase-houndarv reaction nor the transportation of gas controlled entirely the rate of redziction. Rather, the mechanism of reduction can he divided into three stages. In the beginning, the process seems to depend predominantly on the surJrce reaction, hut after a layer of iron is formed the diffusion of gas becomes the controlling factor. Towards the end, however, the rate falls sharply due to a decrease in porosity. The times predicted by the generalized equation for a certain degree of reduction showed an excellent agreement with those obtained experinmentally for pellets of varying sizes. WIDE interest in iron oxide reduction has resulted in many valuable studies pertaining to thermody-namical properties, equilibrium diagrams, and chemical kinetics. Although the thermodynamical properties and equilibrium diagrams are now known with a fair degree of accuracy, the mechanism and rate-controlling step in the reduction of iron oxides presents a problem to research workers which is still unsolved. This is because the field of chemical kinetics is so highly complex. Besides the chemical reaction between oxide and reducing gas, several other processes are occurring simultaneously such as solid-state diffusion of iron through intermediate oxides (FeO and Fe3O4), the diffusion of reducing gas inwards and of product gas outwards, and the sintering of iron if reduction is carried out above the sintering temperature of iron. Furthermore, there is a large number of variables, including the nature and flow rate of the reducing gas, the chemical composition and physical properties of the ore, the temperature of reaction, particle size, and so forth, all of which can affect both the mechanism and the kinetics of reduction. Despite the controversy and diversity of opinion about the mechanism of iron oxide reduction, three main schools of thought have emerged. According to the first, the rate is controlled by the diffusion of gas through the boundary layer of stagnant gas; the second claims that the rate is proportional to the area of the metal-oxide interface, while the third believes the transportation of reducing gas from the main stream to the metal-oxide interface and of product gas from the metal-oxide interface to the main stream to be the rate-controlling step. 1) The boundary-layer theory is true mainly for packed beds where the flow of gas through the bed is important. For a single particle, the boundary layer may be prevented from being the rate-controlling step if a gas flow rate of reducing gas above the critical flow rate is used. 2) Several workers have reported a linear advance of the Fe/FeO interface which provides excellent support for the belief that reduction is controlled by the surface area. McKewanl has given formal shape to this concept with mathematical derivation and has shown it to be valid for reduction of several iron ores, hematite, and magnetite, both by H2 and H2, H2O, N2 mixtures. Some other investigators, however, do not find this theory to be entirely valid. Deviations have been observed2 and further confirmedS3 Hansen4 also agrees that deviations do occur, at least in the latter stages of reduction, while from the data of several investigators summarized by Themelis and Gauvin,5 it is clear that the theory is not always applicable and further that, when it is applicable, it does not hold in the final stages of reduction. 3) Among those who claim the transportation of gas to be the rate-controlling step are Udy and Lorig,6 Bogdandy and Janke,7 and Kawasaki el a1.8 The validity of the theory has also been acknowledged indirectly by other research workers who show that the sintering and recrystallization of iron cause a decrease in reduction rate, for it is only if the transportation of gas is important that this sintering has any bearing. GeC14 may be purified by extraction with HCI and chlorine. The process is as effective for the removal of AsCI:, as the more cumbersome distillation methods usually used for this purpose. GERMANIUM for semiconductor use contains impurities at levels no higher than a few parts in ten million. Material of this quality is obtained from highly purified GeC1, by hydrolysis to the oxide and reduction of the oxide in hydrogen. When purifying GeCl,, AsC1, is the most difficult impurity to remove. This is usually accomplished by multiple distillation procedures.1-3 AsC1, may also be removed from GeC1, by extraction with HC1.1-4 Reducing the arsenic to low concentrations is not practicable, however, because of the large number of extractions needed. This paper discusses a new method for the removal of arsenic from GeC1, by extraction with HC1 and chlorine. The method is rapid, leads to little loss of germanium and is at least as efficient as the distillation procedures currently being used. Theory of Extraction Procedures In the simple extraction of GeC1, with HC1, the following reaction occurs ASCl8G8C1 D AsCl3rc1 at equilibrium CA/Cn= K, where K is the distribution coefficient, and C, and C,, are the molar concentrations of AsC13 in HC1 and GeCl,, respectively. The materials balance equation for this reaction is VACA + vncn = VnC,, where V, and Vn are the volumes of HC1 and GeCl4, respectively, and C, is the initial concentration of AsC13 in GeC1,. From this it can be shown that for multiple extractions where C,, is the concentration of AsC13 in GeC14 after n extractions, and r is the ratio of V, to V,,. It is assumed that r is maintained constant, that equilibrium is established during each extraction, and that K is independent of the AsCl3 concentration. By saturating the system with chlorine, the following reaction occurs in the aqueous phase AsCl3 + 4H2O + Cl2 D H5AsO4 + 5HC1 at equilibrium K' = ------------ ai - a4 h2u - aet2 where a is the activity of the various components. The effect of this reaction is to reduce the concentration of the AsC1, in the aqueous layer and, therefore, to promote further extraction of this component from the GeC1, layer. If the arsenic acid remains entirely in the aqueous phase, the net effect of this reaction is to promote the removal of arsenic from the GeC11. The materials balance equation for extraction with HC1 and chlorine with the foregoing reaction is, then, VaCC + VACA + VACn = VnCo where C,. is the molar concentration of H3AsO, in the HC1. With the added assumptions that the activities of AsC13 and H8ASO4 in the aqueous phase are equal to their molar concentrations, it can be shown that for n extractions Cn/Cu = (1/rkK + rK + 1) n where k - K1 a4h2o - acl2/aoncl. It can be seen by comparing Eqs. 1 and 2 that if k is large, the removal of AsC1, by HC1 extraction will be greatly improved by the addition of chlorine. Dilution of the HCI used in the extraction with chlorine would also favor the separation. This, however, would increase the loss of GeCl,, which is undesirable. Experimental Procedure Germanium prepared from oxide of semiconductor purity is n-type with resistivities greater than one ohm-cm. The resistivity is controlled by the donor concentration, which is —lo-: mol pct. Germanium prepared from material with added arsenic will have lower resistivity commensurate with the arsenic concentration. With such material, at arsenic concentrations above 10-1 mol pct the resistivity is controlled by the added arsenic, and effects due to other impurities initially in the oxide are negligible. In this investigation GeO, of semiconductor purity was converted to GeCl,, and -0.01 mol pct As was added. This material was used for the extraction experiments and the purification attained determined by a comparison of the resistivity data for samples of germanium prepared from the initial and purified GeC1,. A method for calculating the arsenic concentration from the resistivity data is discussed later. INTRODUCTION Post-Lower Ordovician karstification on a continental scale produced a wide-spread paleoaquifer in the upper portion of the Knox Group of the Southeastern United States. The presence of economic zinc deposits in the Knox of Tennessee is considered to be a con- sequence of this paleoaquifer(1). During The New Jersey Zinc Company's initial exploration of the middle Tennessee region the known artesian nature of modern Knox water and its potentially adverse effect upon mining activities was a matter of concern. This concern intensified as a mining situation appeared imminent and a program of hydrologic investigation was begun in early 1969 and continued through August 1972. The preliminary findings of this work were reported at the AIME World Symposium on Mining and Metallurgy of Lead & Zinc in 1970(2). This paper presents additional data acquired during subsequent stages of the program and relates the hydrologic relationships to the overall geologic framework of the area. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY The Elmwood mine is 85km east of Nashville and 8km southeast of Carthage in Smith County, Tennessee (Figure 1). Its physiographic location is in the Central Basin of Tennessee, a basin resulting from erosional breaching across the Nashville Dome of the Mississippian strata which now form the bordering Highland Rims. Both the Central Basin and Highland Rims are divisions of the Interior Low- lands Province. Outcropping rock units of the Central Basin are predominantly Middle Ordovician limestones with scattered high hilltops capped by Devonian and Mississippian strata. One outlier

Recent researches on the reduction of iron ores have stimulated interest in the effect of increased pressures within the iron blast furnace. From a physicochemical viewpoint, it seems logical to suppose that the increased pressure would increase the rate of reduction of the iron ore within the furnace. This increased reaction velocity would in turn be reflected in an increase in the output of the blast furnace. Any substantial effect of elevated blast-furnace pressures should accordingly be of both technical and economic interest to the operator. It is doubtful whether it is possible to increase the pressure in the stack of the blast furnace beyond two or three atmospheres without incurring severe mechanical difficulties. The benefits to be procured by elevations in pressure must therefore be restricted to pressures below two, or at the most, three atmospheres. Within this range it would seem both economically and mechanically feasible to modify the present design of the upper portion of the blast furnace to accommodate these more stringent operating conditions. This investigation was undertaken to study the effect of moderate pressures on the rate of reduction of iron ore with hydrogen. The use of carbon monoxide is contemplated for later work. Although any results that are obtained in the laboratory cannot be interpreted directly in terms of large-scale commercial operations, it is possible, through such an investigation, to ascertain the order of magnitude of the effects of higher pressure. A more quantitative conception of the effects that would result from the use of increased pressures in the modern blast furnace is needed. In some recent work, Diepschlagl found that, all other factors remaining constant, the degree of reduction of iron ores was much greater when carried out under pressure. Pressures as high as seven atmospheres were used. The degree of reduction was determined from the ferrous and ferric iron in the sponge iron. The benefits to be procured by elevations in pressure must therefore be restricted to pressures below two, or at the most, three atmospheres. Within this range it would seem both economically and mechanically feasible to modify the present design of the upper portion of the blast furnace to accommodate these more stringent operating conditions. This investigation was undertaken to study the effect of moderate pressures on the rate of reduction of iron ore with hydrogen. The use of carbon monoxide is contemplated for later work. Although any results that are obtained in the laboratory cannot be interpreted directly in terms of large-scale commercial operations, it is possible, through such an investigation, to ascertain the order of magnitude of the effects of higher pressure. A more quantitative conception of the effects that would result from the use of increased pressures in the modern blast furnace is needed. In some recent work, Diepschlagl found that, all other factors remaining constant, the degree of reduction of iron ores was much greater when carried out under pressure. Pressures as high as seven atmospheres were used. The degree of reduction was determined from the ferrous and ferric iron in the sponge iron. Seepage runs (stream flow measurements in a short time at many points in a basin,) and stream flow records are used to locate losing areas in stream basins in the Missouri Ozarks. The terrane consists of dolomitic limestone and sandstone of Ordovician and Cambrian age. Side-looking radar imagery emphasizes variations in topography and reveals two types of drainage basin topography, rough and smooth (deeply dissected and slightly dissected basins). In the deeply dissected basins (rough ones), main streams and tributaries generally gain. In the slightly dissected basins (smooth ones), the streams lose a part or all of their flow. Logan Creek, a tributary of Black River in the southeastern Ozarks, loses much of its storm runoff and all of its dry weather flow. East and West Forks of the Black River, north of Logan Creek, gain water through most of their main stems. On radar imagery Logan Creek basin has a light uniform tone and smooth texture in contrast to the darker tone and rough texture of the East and West Forks. The contrast is due to the difference in degree of dissection. Therefore, radar imagery may be useful in suggesting gaining or losing streams (or reaches of streams).

Changes and additions made to the Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. electrolytic refinery between 1949 and 1955 are reviewed. The effect of high current density on current efficiency and section work is discussed. OPERATING and physical changes which have been made to the electrolytic tank house of Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. suggest a review of present conditions. Previous papers1 a have described the general arrangement. Since then, expansion, closer anode spacing, and higher current densities have increased annual cathode capacity from 112,000 to 182,000 tons. A recent extension to the tank house, begun in the spring of 1954 and completed in August 1955, was undertaken to handle the monthly production of about 3,000 tons of anodes from Gasp6 Copper Mines. The anticipation of these additional receipts and large stocks of unrefined copper caused by the increase in custom smelting at Noranda made it necessary to increase production without immediately available additional cell capacity. Accordingly, from December 1954 through March 1955, the tank house was operated successfully at a current density of 24.0 amp per sq ft. Again, as of September 1955, one of the two tank house circuits is being operated at this high density. Although other refineries may operate at current densities higher than 24 amp per sq ft, none is doing so with anodes which contain silver and gold content as high as those being refined at Canadian Copper Refiners Ltd. General Arrangement The original building consisted of two parallel bays, each 660 ft long and 60 ft wide, with a 24 ft pump bay extending along the west side of the building. A previous expansion, completed in 1939, was to the west of the original building and consisted of two 60 ft parallel bays 240 ft long. The length of these two bays was extended in 1954 to 540 ft, adding one stripper and 12 commercial sections to No. 2 electrical circuit. Space is still available for an additional six commercial sections and one stripper section. Construction on these seven sections started in September 1955, and will be completed early in 1956. The tank house capacity will then be 206,000 tons of cathodes per year. In the two tank houses there is a total of 900 cells distributed as follows—commercial, 468; stripper, 36; total, 504 in the No. 1 tank house (No. 1 circuit): commercial, 360; stripper, 36; total, 396 in the No. 2 tank house (No. 2 circuit). Section arrangement consists of nine cells to a tier and two tiers or 18 cells to a section. Anodes, weighing 620 lb each, are cast with a Baltimore groove and are refined by the multiple system. Solution enters each cell through a bottom inlet at one end and overflows at the top of the opposite end. Rate of solution flow through the cells is controlled by valves at each section to 4.5 gpm. Electrical power to the tank house is now provided by nine 675 kw motor generator sets. Each set consists of a 135-12 v 5000 amp dc generator, driven by a 980 hp 2300 v synchronous motor. When No. 1 circuit is operated at 22,000 amp, five sets, at 4400 amp each, are connected in parallel. As the maximum allowable current on No. 2 electrical circuit has recently been set at 18,000 amp, only four sets are connected in parallel on No. 2 circuit. A tenth set, now being installed, will be reserved as a spare, for use in either circuit as required. THE attention of physicists and metallurgists has been directed toward the study and explanation of the deformation textures in metals for the past 15 years. In 1920 N. Uspenski and S. Konobejewski1 were first able to show that the symmetrical X-ray diffraction effects that had been previously reported by E. Hupka2 and others in metal foils were caused by a directed arrangement of the crystallites. Since then, the systematic study of textures resulting from the application of the pure forces of tension or compression to polycrystalline materials hag been supple-mented by many investigations on deformed single crystals, which have greatly added to our knowledge of deformation. However, despite the valuable information secured from these comparative studies only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature. This lack of quantita-tive data is especially unfortunate because of the much greater practical significance of rolling textures and their effects in both cold-rolled and annealed materials. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of specifying the deformation of rolled single crystals in the hope that such information might later facilitate the explanation of polycrystal-line textures.
