IRON ORE fields are situated in both the East and West of France (see maps). The eastern deposit is by far the most important from a tonnage point of view, not only in France, but in all Europe. The ores of this region are known as minette, and are situated in the Lorraine ore fields and the Briey plateau. The iron ores of the West are those of Normandy, Anjou and Brittany. Before the war, a large number of important German companies had acquired considerable interests in these western fields and a heavy trade with Westphalia had begun. Recently, however, conditions have changed and some of the mines of Brittany and Anjou are now idle. From a geological point of view, in Anjou and Brittany, a series of synclines extends from the northwest to the southeast, containing a number of seams of varying thickness and generally intercalated in Silurian and sometimes in Devonian formations. The ore is generally a hematite or a magnetite. The composition varies from 48 to 52 per cent of iron and from 8 to 12 per cent of silica. Con¬servative estimates indicate a con¬siderable tonnage of workable ores (150,000,000 metric tons).

Bennie, General Manager of the Shannon Copper Co., Clifton, Ariz., 'it has been my valued privilege to cooperate in the elaboration of a hydrometallurgical process aiming at the recovery of copper in mill tailing resulting from a gravity concentration of a low-grade semi-oxidized sulphide ore occurring in a porphyritic gangue. The experimental work which has been carried on with a 25-ton plant is completed, and the company is building at present a leaching plant on a larger scale, the first unit consisting of a 150-ton roasting furnace and accessories for leaching the calcine.

Oil bearing rocks, usually found at depths of 2,000 to 10,000 it, are elastically deformed by overburden pressure. Although the change in porosity with pressure in a number of example rock.: has been shown to be small, it was thought that overburden pressure might have a significant effect on permeability. This note presents results of an investigation to determine the magnitude of the change in permeabilty with pressure. In routine core analysis permeabilities are measured on rock samples which are not under overburden pressure. If permeablity measured in this way differs from permeabilities measured under overburden pressure, a systematic error is introduced into well productivity calculations. The experiments described in this report were made to determine the magnitude of the change and thus to give an estimate of the error introduced into the calculations. The error introduced by the neglect of the change in permeability when overburden pressure is removed may account for part of the difference between well productivity calculated from core analysis and the actual well productivity. The results obtained in this investigation have only quali-tative significance because of the difficulty in reproducing in the laboratory the stress conditions on the rock buried in the earth. The assumption which is usually made is that the rocks in the earth are under a uniform pressure equal to the weight per unit area of the vertical overburden column from the rock in question to the surface of the earth less the pressure of the liquid in the pores of the rock. For an overburden consisting of sandstones and shales (of assumed average specific gravity of 2.3) and for a liquid pressure equal to the pressure in a salt water column (of specific gravity 1.0) reaching from the rock to the surface, the resulting net pressure on the rock is approximately 0.56 psi per ft of depth. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Clean, dry sandstone core plugs one in. in diameter and about three in. long were mounted in a copper foil jacket as shown in Fig. 3 or molded in a Lucite jacket as shown in Fig. 4. All cores except those labeled "2" in Fig. 1 and "8" in Fig. 2 were measured in the copper foil jacket. Cores "2" and "8" were measured in the Lucite jacket. The jacketed core was placed in a high pressure hydraulic bomb in which the liquid pressure outside the jacket could be raised to 15,000 psi. Flow lines from the core were brought out of the bomb through special fittings in the bomh head and connected to a laboratory type gas permeameter. Measurements were made with nitrogen gas; the maximum mean gas pressure in the core was 16.1 psia. RESULTS The specific permeability of sandstone decreases with in. crease in overburden pressure. Most of the decrease takes place over the range of zero to 3,000 psi overburden pressure. If the net pressure on the rock is assumed to be 0.56 psi per ft of depth as discussed above, 3,000 psi of overburden pressure is equivalent to about 5,000 ft of overburden. At 3,000 psi overburden pressure, the permeability of the eight sandstone core samples tested ranged from 59 to 89 per cent of the permeability without overburden pressure. Figs. 1 and 2 show the permeability reduction as a function of overburden pressure. The permeability of the eight cores without overburden pressure ranged from 4.35 md to 632 md; these permeabilities are listed in Figs. 1 and 2. REFERENCES 1. Higher freight rates and better methods of beneficiation now may make it more economical to open inferior deposits closer to a glass factory than to work higher-grade deposits farther away. Nature of impurities and special treatments as well as common practice of sulphuric acid leaching are described. HISTORICAL concepts of the economics of the glass-sand industry are changing rapidly. The greatly expanded demand for glass containers combined with higher freight rates on raw materials and manufactured products have induced a migration of glass factories toward densely populated centers and the creation of new standards of place value for substandard sand deposits. This migration has been facilitated by the construction of pipelines to bring cheaper natural gas and liquid fuel to large cities and may be further speeded by the adoption of modern mineral dressing methods to permit economical utilization of local raw materials. Our national resources of naturally high-grade silica sand are abundant, but most of the best deposits are situated so far from large centers of population that it now costs $3.00 to $5.00 a ton to carry the sand from the mine to the optimum site for a factory making beverage bottles, scientific and electrical glassware, and miscellaneous blown and pressed ware for local markets. It follows that on the basis of freight savings alone it may be economical to use material from inferior deposits closer to the factory even though the f.O.b. cost of mining and treatment may be much higher than at a higher grade deposit farther away. Particle-size distribution is a feature of glass-sand specifications. As long as glassmakers insisted upon having their sand principally coarser than 100-mesh, any material was automatically excluded from consideration that could not be purified without fine grinding or other drastic treatment which greatly reduces the size of the quartz grains. However, re- cent large-scale tests in Norway' showed that finely-crushed quartz used in a soda-lime-silica glass batch caused it to melt and become refined appreciably faster than when ordinary coarse (Belgian) sand was employed. Dust losses were negligible. Since the pre-war cost of sand was only 3 pct of the manufacturing cost of the glass, it was deemed economical to pay twice as much for crushed quartz because of the saving in wear and tear on the furnace walls. In the author's unverified opinion, sand ranging in size between 150 and 400-mesh would probably be superior to that in the more usual range of 20 to 100-mesh. Former objections to fine sand (other than dust) were doubtless fostered by the natural concentration of impurities in the finer sizes. Ordinarily the most objectionable, as well as the commonest, impurity from the standpoint of the manufacturer of any but the cheaper qualities of colored glass is iron. No natural sands are really pure silica. Even water-clear quartz crystals are likely to contain impurities in the form of solid solution as well as inclusions which cannot be eliminated except by chemical treatment that will break down the silica lattice. Pure white pegmatite quartz will usually analyze 0.01 pct or more of iron oxide, and ordinary vein quartz and the quartz grains in most

(written discussion ?).¬Your secretary requested a brief description of the Russell Sage Foundation, in order that members of the Institute, if they should desire to avail themselves of it, would know what type of service is offered to them through our institution. The foundation was established in 1907 by the gift of Mrs. Russell Sage of $10,000,000 as a capital fund, the income of which is to be spent for the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States. One of the lines of activity which the foundation has felt would lead toward this end is the development and promotion of community surveys; and because the scope and methods followed in these surveys are very similar to the scope and method of much of the institution's work in general, an idea of its main activities can perhaps be given best by describing one of our surveys. Incidentally, it may be pointed out that antecedent to the survey stand at least two important facts: first, the recognition. that communities are active, not static forces, that they develop, that changes in. material and human relationships occur continuously, and that with them come new social and civic problems which must, in many cases, be diagnosed and prescribed for anew; and second, the reality of scientific advances along lines which make possible at least some measure of solution of the problems. Evidences of these changes are abundant; many of them are found in the rapid growth of cities in the last few decades. Villages in agricultural districts, places where everybody knew everybody else, where the pulpit had been long the chief or only influence molding public opinion, where the air was unclouded by the smoke from factory stacks, where the water supply was not affected by pollution, where sunlight and building

R. L. Bell. C. Graeme-Barber, and T. G. Langdon (Imperial College. London)— The internal-marker technique developed by Ishida, Mullendore, and Grant has enabled them to make some interesting observations on the role of grain boundary sliding in creep. Certain of their conclusions are supported by our own similar experiments on Magnox AL80 (Mg-0.8 pct Al) specimens containing several markers, full details of which will be published shortly. In particular, we would agree that: 1) Using the internal-marker method, there is little difference between Egb, the contribution made by grain boundary sliding to the total strain, measured at the surface and in the interior of a specimen. 2) The measurement of the change in grain shape during creep leads to an underestimation of the grain strain, and hence an overestimate of Egb.. However, the discrepancies between the values obtained by this method and those obtained using markers are not as great as Tables IV and V of Ishida, Mullendore, and Grant would suggest; see below. The authors' Eq. [I] which is used to compute Egb from the transverse displacement ITt of longitudinal marker lines is not given in the reference quoted,'' where in fact only relations for Egb in terms of the longitudinal displacements of markers were developed. As first pointed out by Gifkins and Gittins,12 a problem arises in the use of longitudinal markers. and we will show that Eq. [1] underestimates Egb in the interior by a factor of 2. In Fig. 12, two grains X and Y have become displaced by the vector AC which lies in the plane of the grain boundary ABCD separating them. A longitudinal marker has been split by this displacement into the two parts LA and CAW. If these were surface grains the transverse displacement, Ut. could be obtained by viewing normal to the "top" surface. If interior, a section through CD parallel to the top surface would show the same result, provided the longitudinal internal markers delineated planes normal to the top surface. (This is an essential feature of the markers not pointed out in the paper.) The important point is that the quantity Ut tan B (=BE=DF) only gives the elongation due to the one component AB of the sliding. The elongation V/tan 8 (=GD) due to the component AD must be added to produce the total elongation resulting from the boundary displacement AC. If the grain boundaries in a poly crystalline specimen are randomly oriented with respect to the stress axis it follows that In the interior of a specimen the two sums depend for any difference simply on the definitions "top'' and "side". On the surface it is possible that the two sums could differ somewhat. In either event it is clear that the authors' Eq. [I] underestimates Egb, and in the interior, and perhaps at the surface also, the appropriate formula is given by The suggested modification probably makes little difference to the comparison between surface and interior values of Egb where both were obtained from marker measurements. For the estimation of the correction becomes extremely important where the boundary contribution is large. In our own work on magnox, for example, we have obtained values of as large as 70 to 80 pct, under conditions of high temperature and low strain rate. The use of planar markers transverse to the stress axis would simplify the comparison between surface and interior behavior, because measurement of the longitudinal offsets Us of these markers could be summed to give the total elongation di-

The effects on the Cu-A1 eutectoid transformation of the addition of a third element from the second long period and from Group IIB of the periodic table, were studied by isothermal transfomation techniques. The valency of the third element shows the most pronounced effect on the eutectoid decomposition. With some exceptions, the atomic size factor of the third element shows some consistent effects on pearlite nucleation and growth. The atomic concentration or the electronegative valency of the third element shows wo consistent effect on the eutectoid decomposition. Addition of the third element helps spheroidization of pearlite. SINCE the pioneering work of Davenport and Bainl on the eutectoid decomposition in steel by the isothermal transformation technique, an enormous amount of data has been accumulated on the eutectoid transformation characteristics of commercial steels. While the eutectoid reaction in steel is of tremendous industrial importance, it appears to be quite unique among the eutectoid reactions. Though the metal-lographic structures developed in the Fe-C and Cu-A1 eutectoids are similar, it is now evident that the two eutectoid reactions are quite dissimilar. The eutectoid decomposition in the Cu-A1 system is more complicated partly due to the appearance of transitional phases in addition to the equilibrium phases. * The first isothermal studies of aluminum bronzes were made by Smith and Lindlief2 and later by Mack,3 Klier, and Grymko,4 and recently Hayne 5,6 A few other systems, structurally analogous to the above, have been studied by the same technique.7-10 Kasberg and Mack1' studied the effects of iron on the transformation of commercial aluminum bronze. The effects of manganese and nickel on this aluminum bronze and those of iron, manganese, and nickel on the binary Cu-A1 eutectoid have been recently studied.12 The object of the present investigation was to study, by isothermal transformation techniques, the effects (with respect to the fundamental factors of alloy formation) of the addition of a third element on the transformation of a Cu-Al eutectoid alloy, 11.8 pct Al. The third elements chosen for the purpose were silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony from the second long period, and beryllium, zinc, and cadmium from group 11B of the periodic table. They were added in nominal amounts of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.5 pct by weight to a eutectoid Cu-A1 alloy. These third elements were expected to show the effects of electron valency, atomic size factor, and electronegative valency effects on the binary eutectoid transformation. PFLEPARATION OF ALLOYS AND PROCEDURE All alloys were made as 400-g heats by induction melting in a graphite crucible with a graphite lid. The molten alloy with a layer of graphite powder on top was stirred at regular intervals by a graphite rod. When the melt was judged to have acquired sufficient superheat, a pinch of common salt was sprinkled on top and any crust scraped off to one side. It was then chill cast into a 5/8 in. rod. The alloys with silver were prepared by remelt-ing the high-purity Cu-A1 eutectoid alloy used by Mack3 with high-purity silver (99.99 pct pure from Hardy and Harmon, Inc.). In the preparation of all the other alloys, polished electrolytic copper shot (from Belmont Smelting and Refining Co.) and high-purity aluminum (99.99 pct pure from Aluminum Co. of America) were used.

Discussion of the paper of COURTENAY DEKALB, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 331 to 337. HORACE V. WINCHELL, Minneapolis, Minn.-Mr. Dehalb summarizes the reasons which he believes are important for the revision of the mining laws, as follows: "1. The conceptions as to the characteristics of orebodies that were held at the time the statute of 1872 was enacted have since proved to be in many respects erroneous." We all appreciate the force of that suggestion. The idea of the old prospector who made rules and regulations in the early days, which were attempted to he incorporated, so far as possible, in the Mining Act of 1872, was that all of the veins in a certain district outcropped upon the surface, or approximately parallel to each other upon the surface, and maintained that parallelism beneath the surface. Therefore, it seemed perfectly proper and natural for each man to stake his claim upon an outcropping, and have the right to follow that vein in working downward, with the general expectation that his workings would always remain just as far away from those of his neighbor as the outcroppings upon the surface. This does not happen to be the case. Dr. Raymond has very ingeniously referred to the subject in one case, in words which read as follows: "If all mining properties presented this beautiful simplicity of structure (ideal location of ideal vein), and all mining locators exhibited a corresponding simplicity of purpose, the application of the law would be easy, but the naiveté of the statute fares badly between the freaks of nature and the tricks of man."

INTRODUCTION The regional characteristics of porphyry copper deposits in South America southward from Pantanos and Pegadorcito, Columbia, will be summarized. The age of formation of deposits spans the period from the Permian to the present. Where possible, the general characteristics and the individual structural features of the deposits are integrated into the plate tectonic model. Individual deposits cited in this chapter, located in Fig. 1, are the best known and most fully described, and form the Andean copper belt (Peterson, 1958). Smaller porphyry copper deposits fall both east and west of the line of large, high grade deposits (e.g., Chuquicamata and Toquepala) that make up the spine of this belt. Most of those smaller deposits (e.g., Mi Vida [Koukharsky and Mirre, 19761) are omitted from Fig. 1 and Tables 1 and 2, however. Neither the Andean orogen nor the individual deposits within it are as well de- scribed in the literature as are their counter- parts in the Cordilleran orogen of North America. Therefore, generalizations relying on regional geologic mapping, geophysics, and isotopic geochemistry lack details pertinent to this type of deposit in the Cordilleran orogen. The South American porphyry copper province has been described by Hollister ( 1974) to include most of the Andean orogen excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry copper deposits have not been commonly found within the tin belt, although copper-tin (e.g., San Rafael, Peru) and copper-tungsten (e.g., Llamuco, Chile) de- posits are known. James (1971) shows the depth to the Moho to be appreciably greater where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from the coincident appearance of the tin-tungsten province and the inhibition of porphyry copper development where the sialic crust thickens. Dates on tin mineralization in this belt (Clark and Farrar, 1973) are similar to some dates for porphyry copper mineralization known else- where in the Andean orogen. It seems that some mechanism is needed to explain the geographic separation of porphyry copper- molybdenum and simultaneous tin-tungsten- molybdenum metallization within the same tectonic system and appearing at similar distances from the trench. The thickened crust of the tin belt is one of the few known differences. Tables 1 and 2 list some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but do not include Antaminas, Peru. or a number of other large skarn deposits

An important question in the study of the "hot corrosion" phenomenon (i.e., accelerated oxidation of Ni-Cr-base and Co-Cr-base "superalloys" in the presence of sulfur) is the condition of formation and physico-chemical properties of different sulfides in the system Ni-Co-Cr-S. seyboltl has observed the presence of ((chromium-rich" sulfides of compositions M3S4, and M2S3 in the scales of superalloys after hot corrosion; however, as he points out, much confusion exists as to the identity of sulfides found on Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys. According to the literature,&apos; ternary sulfides, e.g., NiCr2S4, (monoclinic structure) and CoCr2S4 (spinel structure) exist in these systems. Therefore, it is likely that these compounds are found in the scale of alloys undergoing hot corrosion. At present this possibility has not been discussed in the literature. Accordingly, we have begun investigation on the properties of ternary sulfides and their mutual interaction. The magnetic and electrical properties of pure NiCr2S4 and pure CoCr2S2 have been previously determined."-&apos; In the present work we have studied the interaction between these sulfides at high temperatures by means of X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility. The measurements were carried out at room temperature after appropriate thermai treatment of samples at high temperatures. For alloys containing the three elements nickel, chromium, and cobalt this interaction may be of importance in the study of the hot corrosion phenomenon. The compounds NiCr2S4 and CoCr2S4 were prepared from stoichiometric amounts of the elements and CoS in the case of CoCr2S4. Samples were mixed and sealed in evacuated silica tubes, slowly heated to 900&apos; to 100O°C, and held at temperature for a total of 120 hr (NiCr2S4) or 80 hr (CoCr2S4) with intermediate re-grinding~. X-ray diffraction showed a pure spinel structure for CoCr2S4 and a monoclinic structure for NiCr2S4. Samples of mixtures of the two ternary sulfides were prepared with different compositions, see Table I. Samples were heated for a total of 80 hr at 900&apos;C in evacuated silica tubes, with one intermediate regrind-ing. The capsules were slow-cooled to room temperature in the furnace. Samples for X-ray diffraction were prepared by placing powder on a glass slide with vaseline. Dif- fractometer traces were obtained on a G.E. XRD-5 diffractometer using a chromium tube and vanadium filter (40 kv and 31 ma). The size of the spinel unit cell was determined from the eight highest angle peaks (80 deg < 2b < 160 deg). Calculated lattice parameters were plotted vs cos B . ctn 0 and extrapolated to 6 = 90 deg. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility were carried out at room temperature using the Faraday method in a magnetic field of 3000 G and using a Cahn RG automatic microbalance. The system was calibrated from the well-established susceptibilities of platinum and palladium: (Xpt = 0.968 x 10-6 g-1 and Xpd 7 5.04 x 10~6 g-1). The weight of samples were approximately 0.200 g. X-ray diffraction patterns for unsintered mixtures showed Bragg peaks from both the spinel (CoCr2S4) and monoclinic (NiCr2S4) structures. The effects of various elements on the activity coefficient of carbon in liquid iron have been studied by two experimental methods: 1) equilibration with controlled mixtures of CO and CO2; 2) the solubility of graphite in the melt. Activity coefficient of C is increased by Al, Co, Cu, Ni, P, Si, S, and Srz. It is decreased by Cr, Cb, Mn, Mo, W, and V. THE thermodynamic properties of the iron-carbon binary system have now been fairly well established, although some uncertainty remains with respect to the exact location of some of the phase boundaries. The activity of carbon in ferrite and in austenite has been measured in the classic researches of R. P. smith&apos; while similar measurements by Richardson and ~ennis, and by Rist and chipman3 have established the values of the activity of carbon in liquid iron up to 1760°C. On the other hand, our knowledge of the effects of alloying elements on the activity of carbon in dilute solutions is restricted to Smith&apos;s experiments on systems Fe-C-Mn and Fe-C-Si in the austenitic range and to some more recent experiments of schwarzman4 in the a range. In addition there have been a number of determinations of the effects of various elements on the solubility of graphite in liquid iron, and from these the corresponding effect in saturated solution may be obtained. The purpose of the present study was to extend the investigation of the liquid system to include the effects of alloying elements upon the activity coefficient of carbon, principally in dilute solutions. Equilibrium measurements were made on the reaction C + co, = 2 CO (g) The prepared mixture of CO and CO,, diluted with argon, flowed over the surface of the liquid metal which, after several hours&apos; exposure to the gas, was quenched and anqlyzed. As in the earlier experiments, the principal experimental difficulty was in the deposition of carbon on the parts of the furnace at temperatures slightly below that of the metal bath. In order to minimize this difficulty, the ratio (Pco)2 /PCo2 was restricted to values not much higher than 100 atm, and correspondingly the carbon concentration in the metal seldom exceeded 0.30 pct. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The method and apparatus were essentially the same as used by Rist and Chipman.3 The gaseous mixture consisting of highly purified CO, CO,, and argon, each controlled by a flowmeter, was led into the furnace and passed over the surface of the liquid-iron melt which was heated and stirred by high-frequency induction. One slight modification was made in that a molybdenum susceptor was placed outside the crucible for the sake of uniformity of temperature and to combat the tendency of carbon to precipitate on the crucible wall. Pure alumina crucibles approximately 25 mm ID were used. The charge consisting of about 30 g was made up of electrolytic iron, the alloying element to be added, and enough graphite to supply slightly more or less than the anticipated equilibrium carbon concentration. All metals used were of high purity. Metallic chromium, columbium, and vanadium were from special lots supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. Tin, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, and nickel were of purest commercial grades. The electrolytic iron, after being cut to the proper size for charging, was prereduced by hydrogen at 850° to 1000°C to remove surface oxidation. The oxygen content of the reduced material was 0.002 pct. This treatment made it easy to control the carbon content of the initial melt. The charge was melted under the gas mixture to be used for the entire run. In some earlier melts the charge was melted under a stream of argon, but in this case some alumina was reduced from the crucible, and the aluminum thus absorbed in the melt was subsequently oxidized with the formation of a solid film of alumina on the surface of the melt. AS another safeguard against film formation, overheating of the bath was carefully avoided. All runs were made at a temperature of 1560°C. Under experimental conditions a charge of pure iron picked up 0.17 pct C in 3 hr and 0.23 pct C in 6 hr under an atmosphere for which the equilibrium concentration of carbon is 0.27. It is clear that the time required to reach equilibrium from an initially carbon-free melt would be very great. For this reason each experiment was started with a melt of known carbon concentration not far above or below the expected equilibrium value, and each melt was held at temperature for a period of at least 5 hr. Under such circumstances it was possible to chart the approach to equilibrium from both high-carbon and low-carbon materials. Temperature was controlled by frequent optical observation and adjustment and the metls were timed in such a way that the final 2 hr occurred during a time when electric power was steady; for example, 2 to 4 pm or after 11 pm. IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un-roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence. These variables were examined systematically to elucidate roasting and carbonate leaching of carnotite ores and to establish a treatment yielding high recoveries of both uranium and vanadium. Tests were conducted on samples of four different Colorado Plateau ores, described in Table I. Roasting Procedure: The roasting tests were conducted in an electrically heated furnace in which the temperature was controlled to +15oC. The ore (usually a 500-g charge) was ground to —100 mesh, mixed with the desired reagent, and spread in a silica tray to a bed depth of about 1/2 in. During the roast the charge was rabbled at intervals of 15 min. To provide free access of air the furnace was usually ventilated; however, in a few experiments a controlled atmosphere such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen was maintained above the charge. Leaching Procedure: The pulp, generally comprising 500 g of ore and a 2000-cc solution containing 80 g per liter of Na2CO3 and 20 g per liter of NaHCO3, was agitated in an autoclave at 120°C, under 30 psi O2. Samples were withdrawn periodically, and the solution and ore residue were analyzed. Under the conditions employed, maximum attainable extractions were generally achieved in 4

Improved procedure in the manufacture of rail steel has come as the rail user demanded better wearing qualities combined with greater unit weight. With each weight increase per lineal yard has come greater difficulty in making a product that would successfully withstand all tests that modern rails must meet. With these facts in mind, and with a sincere desire to produce a rail whose service in track would be satisfactory in all respects, the steelmaker was quick to realize that all of the factors entering into his process would have to be more closely controlled. Control of rail-steel slags was recognized as one of the most important of many interdepending factors. The object of slag control is to hold the slag compositions within a range that gives the best results with respect to economy of production, uniformity of analysis, and quality of the finished rails. The most important component of the slag from the standpoint of these production and quality factors is the ferrous oxide content. This component is a good indicator of the basicity and oxidizing power of the slag, and these largely govern the effect of the slag on the steel. Consequently, the
