LARGE quantities of "midnight oil" have been consumed by researchers in attempting to develop a process to produce cold ductile zirconium at low cost. The tantalizing facts that zirconium is a bright, silvery, tarnish-proof metal and is 2 1/2 times as abundant in the earth's crust as copper, and thirteen times as plentiful as lead have resulted in much speculation on uses, ranging from automobile radiator grills to kitchen sinks. but unfortunately no low-cost process of producing it has so far been found. In the case of zirconium, we cannot say that "virtue is its own reward" for the principal virtues of the metal, namely, corrosion resistance at ordinary temperatures and ability to absorb gases at high temperature, are the very characteristics that defeat all of the usual recovery methods such as sintering, plating, or direct chemical reduction. The only method giving a pure metal sufficiently low in oxides, nitrides, etc. to be truly cold-malleable is the one developed by Van Arkel and DeBoer in 1925. Thin, heavily doped n-type layers of GaSb have been grown on p-type GaSb substrates. Techniques have been developed for the growth of the n-type layers from a tellurium-doped gallium-rich solution. The solution used consists of 95 at. pct Ga and 5 at. pct Sb. The process consists of immersing the p-type wafer in the solution at a temperature slightly above the liquidus temperature, holding briefly to permit dissolution of the substrate surface, then decreasing the temperature to a value slightly below the liquidus to obtain 1 HE resistivity of n-type GaSb varies linearly with applied hydrostatic pressure, while the resistivity of p-type GaSb is insensitive to such pressure.1,2 The growth. Growth from a solution of GaSb in tin will also be described. In either case the substrate is clamped to a shelf at one end of a graphite boat, and immersion of the wafer and subsequent decanting of the solution is accomplished simply by tilting the furnace. The process is useful for the formation of p-n junctions in III-V compounds and has the advantage that the problems normally associated with diffusion of Group VI elements are not present. Layers up to 4.0 mils in thickness have been grown by the process. material therefore should be useful in a hydrostatic pressure-sensing device. A practical hydrostatic pressure sensor, however, requires the fabrication of GaSb sensing elements of several hundred ohms resistance. Attempts were made to prepare such elements by diffusion, taking advantage of the high sheet resistance of the thin diffused layers and depending upon the p-n junction to provide isolation from the base layer. HARRY B. BARREN Harry B. Barren, born in Cleveland, Ohio, May 31, 1888, died in Indiana Harbor, Ind., on Mar. 18, 1918. After graduating from the Case School of. Applied Science of Cleveland, class of 1910, he spent a year at the Youngstown, Ohio, plant of the Carnegie Steel Co. and the following two years with the National Tube Co. in Lorraine, Ohio. In 1913, he went to Indiana Harbor as assistant superintendent of the blast furnaces of the Inland Steel Co. Four months later, he was made superintendent. On Feb. 11, 1914, he was married to Miss Anna E. Jones in Cleveland and is survived by his widow and two sons, and by his parents Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Barren, of Cleveland, and a brother Kenneth, a lieutenant in the 309th Engineers, stationed at Camp Taylor, Louisville, Ky. CHAS. H. JOHNSON Charles Harmany Johnson died Dec. 10, 1918, at his home in New Castle, Pa., after an illness of more than four weeks brought about by a complete nervous collapse. He was born near Clinton, Lawrence Co. Pa., July 9, 1870, a son of George W. and Elizabeth A. Johnson. His parents moved to New Castle when he was two years old, where he attended the public schools of New Castle. He then attended Allegheny College, and later Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he graduated as a mining engineer. For a year and a half after completing his work at Boston he was connected with the Mesaba Ore Range in Minnesota, and then returned to New Castle and became associated with his father in the operation of the old sheet mill, which was converted into a tin mill and later sold to the American Sheet and Tin Plate Co. Since that time he has been actively engaged with his father in the limestone business and other industries. At the time of his death Mr. Johnson was general manager of the Pittsburg Limestone Co., the G. W. Johnson Limestone Co., the Lawrence Limestone Co., the Keystone Limestone Co., and the Mahoning Limestone Co., all of which have quarries in Lawrence, Butler, Blair and Armstrong counties and also in Maryland and West Virginia. THE construction industry normally contributes extensively to the general economic welfare of all sections of the country. Billions of dollars are spent for materials and labor, and the success or failure of many business enterprises depends upon the volume of construction. The steel, aluminum, copper, cement, brick and tile, lime, gypsum, stone, sand and gravel, and several of the less prominent mineral industries are vitally concerned. Of great interest, therefore, is the accumulation of needed construction following the relative inactivity of the past five years, the recent moderate revival in building, and the prospect of a broader and more definite upturn. One may judge the magnitude of possible expenditure for construction by what has occurred in the past. The peak years were 1925 to 1928, inclusive, when the annual values of con- tracts awarded amounted to over six billion dollars. In marked contrast was the 1933 total of about 1% billion, the lowest level shown in the Federal Reserve Board Index, which goes back to 1919, and the more favorable 1935 figure of about 1.7 billion. An increase of nearly four billion over the 1935 volume would be necessary to equal the peak year 1928.

The effect of the transition elements in binary solid-solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of iron has been investigated. All these elements immediately raised the temperature, the majority having their greatest effect in less than 0.10 at. pct. A correlation is noted between the rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the electron configuration of the solute element. THE work of Abrahamson and rant' on binary chromium-base alloys indicated that a correspondence existed between the effect of each solute element on the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature of chromium and the ground-state electron configuration of the element added. This was felt to be a bonding phenomenon and would be expected to be observed in measurements of other properties involving the breaking or exchange of atomic bonds. From this work it was postulated that a like correspondence should be found for other properties of binary alloys, such as recrystallization. This study is an effort to check this postulation using binary solid-solution iron-base alloys. Previously, the majority of recrystallization studies were carried out on steels. However, Tammann2 investigated the recrystallization of iron as effected by Co, Ni, Si, Mn, Mo, and Cr and stated that elements with the same crystal structure at room temperature as iron appeared to be more effective in raising the recrystallization temperature. Austin, Luini, and Lindsay3 studied the effects of Ni, Cr, Mn, Co, Si, and Mo on cold rolling and annealing, but noted no trend. Abrahamson and rant,' in their work on the effect of both substitutional and interstitial elements upon the brittle-to-ductile transition of chromium, have shown that the outer electron configuration in the ground state of the solute element appears to be the prime determinant of the transition temperature. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.95 + pct Fe with 0.02 wt pct 0, 0.004 pct C, and 0.001 pct N. All alloying elements were 99.9 + percent pure. Metal-lographically the alloys, out to at least 0.1 at. pct, appeared to be in solid solution. Though several published phase diagrams tend to dispute this.4 All alloys were arc melted six times and cast into square 400-g ingots under an argon atmosphere.

OpeRations on the Texas Gulf Coast during 1936 increased materially over 1935. A number of new fields were discovered and a few of the older fields were extended, both by the discovery of deeper pay sands and by lateral expansion of the known producing horizons. Twenty-seven new fields have been discovered, of which 25 are oil fields and the others are gas fields that have every indication of becoming oil-producing areas. Amelia, Anahuac, Bay City, North Pettus, Placedo, Pickett Ridge and Tomoconnor have had major extensions. Production for 1936 amounted to 91,224,844 bbl., an increase of 21,627,033 bbl., or 31 per cent, over the 1935 production of 69,597,811 bbl. The number of producing wells at the end of 1936 was 6727, as compared with 4851 at the end of 1935. Proration has continued in force, thus decreasing the rate of depletion and the number of abandonments normally expected. New Fields A brief discussion of the new fields follows, in addition to Tables 1 and 2, which contain the general data on these fields. Aransas (McCampbell).-Buckingham and McCampbell No. 1 McCampbell was drilled to 7501 ft., then plugged back to 6560 ft. and completed in the Marginulina for a 100-bbl. flowing well on July 18. Bee County.—The Voss field, discovered by Swiger and Devonian's No. 1 Voss, and the Holzmark field, discovered by Miller and Donzis on the Holzmark farm, are both of the same type structurally and are caused by folding against a fault, one field being on one side of a fault and the other on the opposite side of the same fault. Brooks County.—-Standard Oil Company of Texas Garcia No. 1, the discovery well in the Alta Mew field, and Dick Young's Singer No. 1, the discovery well of Alta Verde, appear to indicate small fields. Garcia No. 1 was drilled to 8022 ft. and plugged back to 2485 ft., at which depth the well made 189 barrels. The constitution of the nickel-tungsten system has been studied by a number of investigators, the most recent of which are Ellinger and Sykes.1 On the basis of metallography, electrical resistivity and hardness measurements and some X ray diffraction work, they constructed a consitution diagram (Fig 1). Ellinger and Sykes report a0 for the alpha face-centered cubic phase (nickel saturated with tungsten) as 3.66?.‡ The gamma phase (tungsten saturated with nickel) is given as body-centered cubic, but no value of a. is recorded. At 43 pct tungsten by weight (approximately 20 at. pct) a beta phase is reported, but structure and lattice parameter are not known. Primarily on the basis of metallographic evidence, they conclude that beta is a new phase and rule out the possibility of formation of a superlattice since they- observe a new phase in the microstructure. Grube and Schlecht2 report an ordering reaction in a system similar to the Ni-W (Ni-Mo) and Harker3 has shown that NirMo forms a superlattice upon the pre-existing face-centered cubic lattice of the alpha phase. Elliniger arid Sykes observed a change in the diffraction pattern of a 4.3 pct W alloy upon aging and attributed it to the formation of a new phase. Thus, there appears to be some question as to the character of the beta phase reported by Ellinger and Sykes. The purpose of the present work is to determine precisely the structure and nature of the beta phase in the Ni-w system of X ray diffraction methods. Experimental Procedure One inch diameter ingots of 43.66 pct, 40.15 pct and 34.06 pct .tungsten by weight (19.8, 17.6 and 14.1 at. pct respectively) were melted and cast under vacuum from electrolytic nickel and pure wire filament grade tungsten. The ingots were soaked for 16 hr at 1300°C in a hydrogen atmosphere furnace, then swaged at this temperature and finally drawn to 0.020 in. diam wire. Some of the bar stock was retained in 1/2 in. diam rod for hardness and metallographic studies. Wire samples for diffraction work were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and subjected to the various solution and aging heat treatments in a hydrogen furnace. X ray photograms were taken in a Debeye-Slierrer camera using copper K radiation filtered by nickel foil. Results X RAY DIFFRACTION The lattice parameters of the alpha and gamma phases at saturation were determined by an X ray photogram of the 19.8 at. pct W alloy after solution heat treatment at a temperature well within the alpha-gamma range above the peritectoid temperature (17 hr at 1150°C—oil quenched). The alpha phase was found to be face-centeted cubic with a. of 3.594 ± 0.001?, while the gamma phase was determined as body-centered cubic with a. of 3.158 ± 0.001?. Exactly the same phases and parameters were ohtained with the 17.6 at. pct W alloy for the same solution heat treatment. The Ashanti mine is located in the Gold Coast region of West Africa in Ghana, where gold is found over a wide area of about 105,000 sq km (40,000 sq miles). Ashanti has been the most productive of all the lode mines and has been one of the world's notable gold producers for over 50 years. The mine is located at Obuasi, 113 km (70 miles) north and east of Tarkwa, which is 80 km (50 miles) inland from the coast. The Ashanti lode is worked on 300 m (1,000 ft) of strike length over a width of 12 m (40 ft), and by 1934 it had attained a depth of 700 m (2, 300 ft). The lode is in pre-Cambrian granite intruding a system- of shists, phyllites, etc., containing fragments of the wall rock with quartz, carbonates, sericite and small amounts of pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and gold. The shattered quartz fractures carry sulfides and gold, most of which are invisible. (William Harvey Emmons, "Gold Deposits of the World," McGraw -Hill, 1937.) Because the mill treats an ore composed of refractory sulfides - chiefly arsenopyrite and fine free gold - the flowsheet reflects the complex ore characteristics. Plane tables are used in the grinding, circuit for free gold recovery. After roasting the sulfide flotation concentrates, additional free gold is recovered from the calcines with a rotary belt concentrator and the two concentrates are combined for feed to the amalgamation pans, with the resulting gold amalgam being retorted. Following four-stage crushing to minus 9. 5 mm (318 in.) with two stages of grinding, the cyclone overflow is floated for sulfide recovery. The flotation concentrate is roasted with the calcine reground and roughly cyanided to scalp out the gold readily dissolved in one of two cyanidation circuits. The cyanide residue joins the thickened flotation tailing for cyanidation in a complete CCD circuit using filters. The gold precipitates are calcined before melting in pot-type furnaces. The tonnage to the mill of 3,175 mtpd (3,500 s tpd) with a content of over 14.7 g per mt (0.43 oz per st) places the Ashanti production as one of the top producers in the world; and with its past long life, the total production rates it as one of the world's great mines.

I AM APPRECIATIVE of the honor you have done me in electing me to membership in your Society. I value the contacts with men of imagination and ideals which this implies. I am grateful for the recognition of such small contributions as I may have made, or helped to make, to the vast fund of scientific and engineering knowledge. We like to think, as we grow older, that our lives have not been purely parasitical, and that through our efforts some forward step, however small, has been taken toward improving conditions under which we live and do our work. In these days of industrial depression, we hear much criticism of our "machine age." Modern engineering, mass production, the complexity of our lives, all come in for some share of blame. The farmer is said to have been spoiled by the tractor and the gang plow, the factory worker has become a slave of the assembly conveyor, the scientific worker is no longer free but has sacrificed much of his individuality to the research organization of which he is a part. We wonder whether our work as engineers has been worth while and whether our striving after more efficient ways of doing things has been a curse to mankind rather than the boon we thought we were conferring.

The depletion performance of gas wells has been investigated by mathematical simulation techniques. The gas well model which was studied consisted of a single well located in the center of a bounded, cylindrical, homogeneous reservoir. Dependency of gas compressibility and viscosity on pressure was considered in studies of well performance at both constant mass flow rate and constant flowing pressure conditions. To carry out the investigation, the nonlinear, second-order, partial differential equation which describes Darcy flow of a nonideal gas through porous media was solved numerically. Some of the previous investigations of gas well performance have been of limited general use, because assumptions were introduced to simplify either the gas properties or the basic differential equation. Other studies have been rigorous in these respects but have presented a very limited set of calculated results. The present study was attempted to present a rigorous theoretical model and sufficient numerical results to permit meaningful conclusions to be drawn. It was found that all terms must be retained in the partial differential equation to make accurate predictions. The neglect of higher-order terms, e.g., terms of the order of the "gradient squared", leads to serious material balance errors at large times and to conservative estimates of gas well performance. The higher the gas flow rate and/or the lower the permeability-thickness product of the formation, the more pronounced are these deviations. For example, in a well draining 640 acres in a 25-md-ft formation (8,120 MMcf gas in place) at a constant rate of 993 Mcf/D, the rigorous solution predicts a bottom-hole pressure decline from 4,000 to 1,000 psia in 8.7 years. If higher-order terms are neglected in the differential equation, this decline in pressure is predicted to occur in 5.3 years. With the results of the numerical solution of the differential equation as a basis, simple, easy-to-use approximations for predicting gas well performance for Darcy flow conditions have been developed. These simple approximations are based on the familiar equations for flow of a single, slightly compressible fluid. The approximate methods possess a high degree of accuracy and enable the prediction of long-term gas well performance to be made quickly and accurately without the use of a digital computer. Both transient and stable flow period approximations were developed. INTRODUCTION In recent years income from the sale of natural gas and associated products has represented an ever-incre as ing fraction of the industry's total revenue from operations. To meet the surge in demand for natural gas, the industry has depended heavily upon established reserves and has actively pursued development of new reserves. The search has progressively led to reservoirs which yesterday were too tight and/or deep to yield the desired return on invested capital. More than ever before, evaluation accuracy is now required to forecast the criteria upon which engineering recommendations and management decisions are based. Considerable effort has been expended by both research and operations personnel on the development and application of methods for analyzing and predicting the performance of gas wells. Fundamentally, the problem is the familiar one of extracting data during the drilling, testing and early production life of a well and applying these data within an accurate simulation model to predict long-term behavior. During the past 30 or more years a voluminous literature dealing specifically with gas field problems has been generated. A recent book' lists a comprehensive bibliography of published material through 1959. Over 1,200 references are cited. Since then 39 additional articles on natural gas technology have been published in Transactions volumes of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME. Most existing theory for predicting gas well performance requires that one or more idealizations (e.g., steady-state flow, ideal gas of constant viscosity, small and constant compressibility and constant-viscosity fluid) be applied. Although existing theory may apply directly or be adapted by various artifices to describe specific gas well and reservoir behavior, no widely applicable method is available, and existing methods appear to be subject to appreciable error unless better limits of applicability are defined. The objectives of this paper are (1) to present numerical solutions to the partial differential equation describing gas flow under conditions of general interest in gas well performance prediction work, (2) to present solutions which possess a high order of accuracy for both transient and stabilized flow periods of a well producing at constant rate or constant pressure, and (3) to develop and present simplified relationships which can be used as high-order approximations to the exact numerical results for fast and accurate predictions of gas well performance at the operating level. THE discovery of oil in 1901 on the Spindletop dome, Texas, inaugurated a new industry on the Gulf Coast, an industry which has grown with the discovery of successive fields, until today it engages the services of thousands of workers and employs enormous capital. New fields are being discovered from time to time and doubtless some still remain to be found, though of late years discoveries have become more infrequent. Nowadays several hundred dry holes are drilled each year in a fruitless and blind effort to discover new fields, for as yet geologic science has developed no effectual method of locating the coastal oil deposits in advance of drilling. Moreover, despite the occasional discovery of new fields, the total production of the Gulf Coast is today no greater than it was in 1906, for the added production of the new fields has been offset by the rapid decline and more or less complete exhaustion of some of the older ones. Careful geologic work within the fields has in some cases increased the production temporarily, but has developed no really new supplies. The Gulf Coast oil industry seems to have passed its period of greatest expansion and to be declining at a fairly steady rate, and this condition is naturally viewed with alarm by the more farsighted operators. In my opinion, the time has come for the adoption of radical and aggressive methods of prospecting, and a fraction of the money wasted yearly in drilling shallow wells in hopeless locations might well be devoted to this purpose. The formula very frequently used for computing the economical size of pipe to transmit compressed air is that of D'Arey, as follows: D = cV w1l Where, D = the volume of compressed air delivered in cubic feet per minute, at the final pressure. c = an experimental coefficient determined for the various sizes of pipe, d = the diameter of the pipe in inches. 1 = the length of the pipe in feet. p, = the initial gauge-pressure in pounds per square inch, p2 = the final gauge-preesure in pounds per square inch. w1 = the density of the air, or the weight in pounds per cubic foot at the initial pressure, p1. The most common case is that in which the given quantities are: the quantity of air required, the length of the pipe, and the initial pressure. The method of solution is to assume a pressure-loss and to compute the remaining factor, cd5, thus giving the size of pipe corresponding to the assumed loss of pressure. It is always desirable to try two or more pressure-drops, in order to find the combination that is most satisfactory, since often a small change in the size of pipe will reduce or increase the loss of pressure several pounds. An alternative method is to assume a size of pipe and calculate the corresponding pressure-drop. One problem of reservoir engineering is the early estimation of the size of newly discovered reservoirs. Often these reservoirs are the expansion type in which sizeable pressure drops occur incident to the production of small fractions of the oil reserve, above the bubble point, and a material balance equation may be solved to find the reserve. The early form of this equation' considered only the compressibility of the oil. Later Hall2 showed that the compressible nature of the formation rock is a significant factor in production above the bubble point, and he presented a new equation which includes a formation (rock) compressibility term. This note presents a further extension of the material balance equation as applied to volumetric, unsat-urated reservoirs above the bubble point by including a term for the presence and compressible nature of the interstitial water. Under certain conditions of hot rolling and air cooling from the hot-rolling temperature, bars of a high carbon (0.40 pct C) chrome-nickel austen-itic alloy were found to show magnetism even though no ferrite or martensite could be detected by microscopic or X-yay methods. The appearance of magnetism in such alloys may come from chromium impoverishment of the austenite grains near the precipitated carbide particles. SPORADICALLY, hot-rolled bars of Silchrome 10, an exhaust valve steel, have been found to be magnetic. Because of the analysis of the alloy—0.40 pct C, 18 pct Cr, 8 pct Ni, 3 pct Si —magnetism is unexpected. Preliminary investigation showed neither martensite nor ferrite to be present; only austenite and Cr23C6. Since a literature search was fruitless, a brief study was made of the appearance of magnetism in this alloy. The only basic difference between the two heats is the nitrogen content. Permeability was measured using a Severn magnetic gauge. This instrument consists of a magnet mounted on a counterbalanced arm. A set of calibrated plugs is placed in contact with one pole of the magnet. The specimen is placed close to the other pole of the magnet. If the specimen pulls the magnet away from the plug, it has a permeability greater than that marked on the plug. This technique is swift and reproducible. Previous experience has shown that the permeabilities obtained corresponded to those obtained on a permeater with a field strength of 100 oe. Specimens from both heats were annealed at temperatures between 1700 and 2300°F. One set of specimens was water cooled and another furnace cooled. All the water-quenched specimens were non-magnetic; the furnace cooled ones were magnetic as shown in Table I with no difference being observed between the two heats. Microstructural examination of the specimens showed the expected increase in carbon solubility with increasing temperature. Carbide solution was complete at 2200°F. The specimens heated to 1900°F or below showed some carbide precipitation from the hot-rolled structure. A furnace cooled specimen from a given temperature showed less carbide out of solution than the water-quenched specimen from the next temperature below; e.g., the specimen furnace cooled from 2100°F showed less carbide out of solution than the water-quenched specimen from 2000" F. These studies indicated that the appearance of magnetism was not related to the quantity of carbon in or out of solution and it was related to precipitation at temperatures below 1700" F. A set of samples annealed and water-quenched from 2100° F was aged for 4 hr at temperatures between 1000" and 1600°F; all were non-magnetic. A second set of samples, similarly annealed, was aged 1 to 24 hr at 1200°F with the results shown in Table II. None of the latter set of specimens showed magnetism until they had been aged about 8 hr. Magnetism was quite strong after aging 24 hr. X-ray diffraction studies on several of the magnetic specimens showed that the austenite had a lattice parameter of 3.58A and that the carbide was Cr23C6. Several of these samples were electrolytically digested in 10 pct HCl in ethanol, with a current density of 0.1 amp per sq cm. None of the particles in the residue were magnetic. Accidentally, one cell was run at 1 amp per sq cm; e.g., magnetic particles were found in this residue. After careful separation, the magnetic particles were mounted on a quartz fiber and their diffraction pattern determined using a 5.73-in. Debye-Sherrer camera with CrK radiation. These particles showed a fcc structure with a lattice parameter of 3.57A. Prolonged exposure, up to 16 hr, produced no other lines on the film. The following facts seemed to be established at this time: 1) Austenite was the magnetic phase. 2) Neither ferrite nor martensite could be detected. 3) Magnetization could be produced by aging at 1200°F. One explanation of these data is that the carbide precipitation impoverishes the region immediately around the carbide particle of carbon and chromium and increases the proportion of nickel. All of these serve to increase the Curie temperature of the region around the carbide particle. If the composition change is enough, the Curie temperature will rise above room temperature. If the volume of the affected region is great enough, the magnetism will become detectable. At low aging temperatures, composition changes are great enough but the overall volume of impoverishment is quite small

No. 1 Electric Furnace and Billet Casting Shop, located in Plant No. 4 adjacent to our new 12 inch merchant bar mill, represents Inland Steel Company's first venture into both electric furnace steelmaking and continuous casting. Construction of the shop began in September, 1968 with excavation and foundation work, followed by awarding of general construction and major equipment contracts from December, 1968 to April, 1969. The first heat was tapped from No. 90 furnace on December 18, 1970, and the first cast attempted on December 29, 1970. The rated shop capacity is 500,000 tons per year of semi-finished billets and blooms, and was justified on the basis of approximately 85 percent of the product mix falling into the special bar quality category of steel grades. Auxiliary equipment has been designed into the shop to pursue free machining steels, including leaded and tellurized grades. The start-up and operation of the shop for the first year was essentially based on a two-part philosophy: 1. Initially operate with the "open stream" casting technique to accomplish machine shakedown and operator familiarization and training. 2. Operate with special bar quality, or "submerged casting", practices, make necessary refinements and gain customer acceptance

Considerable interest has been shown, during recent years, in the possibilities of developing oil fields in the South American Republics, now that the exhaustion of our present fields can be seen in the not very distant future. The demand for fuel oil and its products has been increasing far more rapidly than our increment of production during the last few years. Increase of consumption has been largely curtailed by the lack of sufficient supply. The main factors that have contributed to our previous neglect of the southern fields have been as follows:, (a) Lack of sufficient demand for the product. (b) Competition with producing fields, having large production, low cost, and better geographical position, such as Tampico, Mexico. (c) Greater interest in home fields with ready market at hand. (d) Our ignorance of southern economic and geologic conditions, clue to the distance between those areas and our financial centers. (e) Economic conditions in the southern countries, necessitating high costs of exploration and exploitation of the fields.

The unidirectional solidification of dendrites containing central twin planes was studied in A1-Ti alloys. Once nucleated, the twinned dendrites are a Twore ejficient form for solute redistribution and therefore grow in preference to the normal columnar dendvites. Comparison of these twinned dendrites to adjacent colunmar dendrites by means of decanting experinzents and electron-probe rnicvoarmlysis indicates that these special dendrites grow with less undercooling than normal dendrites. These findings are further supported by the effect of forced convection on the dendrite morphologies. COMMERCIAL semicontinuous cast ingots of most aluminum alloys frequently exhibit large grains which appear to be composed of hundreds of parallel, continuous, thin lamellae. This structure has been termed "basaltic",' "fiederkristall", or, commonly, "feathery grain". The lamellae are 'about 100 p thick, several inches long, and each lamella contains a central (111) coherent twin boundary. The feathery grain has been reported to have a (112) direction2 and a (110) direction4 in the twin plane parallel to the casting direction, in contrast with the usual columnar structure where a (100) direction predominates. Aust et uZ.~ proposed that the twin boundaries were growth twins nucleated by stacking faults on the octahedral planes. chalmers6 has suggested that feathery grain may grow by a re-entrant edge mechanism, as proposed by wagner7 for twinned dendritic growth in germanium. Cahn et ~1.~ have concluded that the occurrence of feathery grain is evidence of some form of lateral layer growth rather than the atomically continuous growth normally observed in metals. The postulates by Chalmers and Cahn would seem to be contradicted by the work of Nakao~"' who showed that feathery grain only occurs when growth rates are high and the aluminum contains some solute. Specifically, Nakao found that in order to obtain feathery grain, in small castings solidified unidirec-tionally upward, the rate of growth must be above 2.4 cm per min and a critical solute concentration must be present. Below this solute concentration the grain structure was totally columnar. The critical solute concentration was found to be approximately: 0.04 wt pct Ti, 2 wt pct Cu or Mg, and 8 wt pct Zn. As pointed out by Chalmers it is not obvious why a twin-plane re-entrant edge mechanism would occur in aluminum which is thought to have a diffuse solid-liquid interface. The present experiments were undertaken to determine the growth mechanisms in- volved and to study the solute segregation in more detail. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys ranging in composition from 0.05 to 0.23 wt pct Ti* were prepared from 99.9 pct pure Ti and 99.993 pct pure Al. Two-hundred-gram samples of A1-Ti binary alloys were solidified unidirectionally and vertically upward from a water-cooled copper base, in a heated insulated mold. The 1-in.-diam, 6-in.-length mold was made of Marinite (manufactured by Johns-Manville Co.). The mold was attached to a 24-in. pivoted arm such that by dropping a weight the mold was rotated 180 deg, throwing the liquid metal from the solid. In this way, the solid-liquid interface was revealed by decanting. A sketch of the decanting mold is shown in Fig. 1. The alloy was poured into the mold at temperatures ranging from 680" to 750°C, partially solidified by water cooling from the base, and decanted after a measured time interval. Growth rates for each metal-pouring temperature were calculated from solidification-time vs length solidified curves. Temperature gradients in the melt were measured using four No. 34 gage thermocouples which protruded into the mold cavity. Grain orientations were determined by X-ray diffraction using Laue back-reflection techniques. Grain substructures were examined metallographically, using polarized light, by applying a thin epitaxial anodic film to polished sections after the method of Hone and pearson." Titanium micro segregation was measured by electron-probe microanalysis using a NORELCO AMR/~ with a mica crystal and proportional-flow counter. The experiments were carried out by the method of measuring the electromotive force of concentration cells having zinc as a reference electrode, the second electrode being the liquid alloy Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb. The electrolyte consisted of liquid chlorides and had zinc ions. The measurements were made for seventy -five alloys of different mole fractions within the temperature range of 714° to 877°K. The experimental results enabled the calculation of the activity of zinc in tested solutions. The activities of zinc were calculated by means of Krupkowski's formulas.3 In addition, the formulas for coefficients of activity of zinc, tin, cadmium. and lead as the function of composition and temperature were given. Activity of zinc was compared with the values obtained from experimental results, and good agreement has been observed. On this basis it can be stated that the theoretical formulas are suitable for determining the thermodynamic properties of liquid quaternary metal solutions. IN the metallurgical processes being carried out at present multicomponent liquid metal solutions take part. For the thermodynamic analysis of these processes it is necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of these solutions. Therefore, many experimental and theoretical papers deal with this problem. The theoretical papers are generally based on the assumption that the structure of liquid metals is similar to their structure in the solid state. In this manner the model of liquid solution, consequently described by means of statistical thermodynamics, has been accepted. This method is being lately developed, especially for solid solutions. Statistical thermodynamics was applied among others by Guggenheim 1 for describing the thermodynamic properties. Unfortunately, the formulas of statistical thermodynamics are often not suitable for the interpretation of experimental results. Attention should be drawn to the relations obtained by means of formulas of phenomenological thermodynamics which always have constants derived with the aid of experimental methods. In the case of the multi-component solutions which contain some additions of impurities besides the basic metal, wagner2 introduced interaction parameters. Equations for the relationship between the activity coefficients and composition were also given by Krupkowski." he application of these formulas requires a good knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the corresponding binary systems. In these formulas, as in Wagner's, there appear constants which should be determined from ex- perimental data. Nowadays, different experimental methods are applied for evaluating the thermodynamic functions of solutions, for instance: vapor pressure measurements, calorimetric methods, and the measurements of electromotive force of concentration cells. In the present paper this last method for evaluating the thermodynamic properties of four-component systems, Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb, was applied. For instance in the case of Zn-Sn solutions Alabyshev and Landratov, 4 Fiorani and Valenti, 5 and ptak6 performed the investigations. The Zn-Pb system was worked out by Kleppa 7 and Cd-Pb and Cd-Sn by Elliot and chipman.' This method was also applied for determining the activity of zinc in ternary solutions. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental arrangement with detailed description is given in Fig. 1. It consists of resistance furnaces, one serving for melting samples and the other containing the flat-bottomed, measuring quartz tube with the liquid electrolyte. Liquid metals and alloys are in glass supremax tubes, which have an opening in their lower part above the metal level. This opening allows the filling of the tubes by the electrolyte. In these tubes tungsten wires are placed which by means of suitable conductors are connected with a potentiometer.
