THE following description of methods for conducting gas-producer tests is probably the first attempt to give the subject an analytical, thorough and comprehensive treatment. In some cases where tests have been made, the methods have been so unsystematic and ambiguous that it has been impossible to secure comparable results. To eliminate this difficulty, the following provisional code of gas-producer tests-which has some resemblance to the code of boiler-trials of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers-has been developed. The primary object in testing a gas-producer is to determine whether the producer is working satisfactorily or, what is the same. thing, to see if the efficiency is as high as it should be with the type of producer in question, and also to find out if the composition of the resulting gas is adapted to the work it has to do. In order that the test shall be of any value, it must be thorough and comprehensive, and must be conducted with skill and care. When so conducted, the test will reveal the economy of the producer; and, by making suitable changes, the efficiency will often be increased very much. As a result of the tests made by Jenkins, 1 the efficiency was raised from 56.2 to 71.2 per cent. This shows the large saving that may frequently be made in the fuel-consumption by studying the results of a careful test.. The log of the test, given in Fig. 1, shows that, just as soon as the temperature became regular, the percentage of CO, decreased and that of CO increased.

IN the course of small seale experiments on the electrodeposition, of copper, extremely brittle deposits were obtained from electrolytes prepared by leaching calcined chalcopyrite with aqueous sulfuric acid. It was not possible to strip the metal without fracture after it had been deposited from such electrolytes onto smooth oiled copper sheets, the usual plant procedure for the production of so-called starting sheets. The embrittlement did not occur with electrolytes made either by leaching the calcine with water or by treating an acid leachate to remove iron as hydrous ferric oxide. The electrolytes which produced brittle deposits were found to contain molybdenum in concentrations of 10 to 25 mg per 1, whereas those which produced ductile deposits contained <0.5 mg per 1. Synthetic electrolytes having the composition: Cu", 40 gpl; Fe", 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; Fe3+, 0.5 to 1.0 gpl; and H,SO,, 10 to 50 gpl, were prepared from reagent-grade salts; by adding ammonium molybdate, the embrittling effect of the higher concentrations of molybdenum (VI) was strikingly confirmed. The brittle deposits contained up to 0.03 pct Mo. The importance of oxidation state of the molybdenum was demonstrated when the electrolyte containing it was circulated continuously through a bed of fine copper metal during deposi- tion. Under these reducing conditions, the cathode deposit was ductile and molybdenum could not be detected. Molybdenum has not been recognized as one of the metals causing embrittlement of copper nor is it listed among the usual impurities. In most elec-trowinning plants there is a purification step which removes iron from the leachate before electrolysis. In these cases molybdenum would be coprecipitated with hydrous ferric oxide. In the case of the large leaching plant at Chuquicamata, Chile, where the leachate is reported to contain considerable molybdenum, it would be reduced to a lower oxidation state during removal of chlorine by means of cement copper. This may explain why the embrittling effect of molybdenum has not been reported previously. Moreover, in copper refining plants where soluble anodes have been prepared by a high temperature smelting process, it is most unlikely that any molybdenum would remain with the copper, whereas the calcines in this work were prepared in a fluidized bed reactor at a temperature not exceeding 720°C. PRIOR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company&apos;s smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow-gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of trans-ferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 114 miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previously been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended oil the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 ½ tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack oil refractories.

A number of parameters involved in the use of ozone, such as the sequence and the conditioning time of ozone treatment, the pulp pH, and the level of xanthate addition, were investigated.

A GLANCE at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon. Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surface is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract.

A mass transfer coefficient for the removal of hydrogen from liquid aluminum by inert flush degassing has been determined experimentally at 700°C. A mathematical model has been derived, assuming transport control, which adequately describes the experimental data. The removal of hydrogen is shown to increase with decreasing bubble size, and with increasing flow of flushing gas. The presence of hydrogen in liquid metals in amounts which exceed the solid solubility at one atmosphere hydrogen pressure is highly undesirable, causing unsound ingots or castings, or resulting in difficulties during further fabrication. The removal of hydrogen from liquid metals can be accomplished by several methods, the principal two being vacuum treating and inert flush degassing. The design of a process involving either of these techniques is based on the mass transfer coefficient for hydrogen between the liquid metal and a hydrogen-dilute gas phase. In an effort to extend our knowledge in this area, an investigation of the rate of removal of hydrogen from liquid metals by inert gas flushing was undertaken. In view of the difficulties encountered with gas porosity in the casting of aluminum and aluminum alloys, and because of certain experimental advantages, liquid aluminum was selected for the study. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS The removal of gases from liquid metals, particularly steel, has received considerable attention in recent years, The first definitive work of a theoretical nature was presented by Geller1 who considered the case where equilibrium exists between purging gases and metal bath during flushing, and also deviations from this ideal case. Hulme2 has surveyed a number of experimental studies and discussed some of the practical limitations of removing dissolved gases from molten metals. More recently a number of studies have been reported on degassing of steel melts by flushing with an inert gas.3&apos;4 Considerable work has also been reported on aqueous and organic liquid-gas systems, and an excellent summary prepared by Hovis.5 The treatment of liquid aluminum by a flushing gas to remove dissolved hydrogen has been known for several decades.6 A number of gases have been used for this purpose, including nitrogen, argon, and chlorine, or mixtures of these gases. Tikkanen and Erkko7 have studied the relative density changes of aluminum castings poured from melts degassed with chlorine, nitrogen, and mixtures of the two gases. Their

One of the greatest improvements in drilling equipment has been the development of hard facing metals which are welded by electricity or by acetylene to form a facing which protects the steel of the bit from abrasive wear. The main desirable characteristics of hard facing metals are resistance to abrasive wear, resistance to shock and perfect bond with underlying metal. Resistance to abrasion offered by various metals shows many anomalies. Compounds containing carbon, silicon and boron are the most important hard substances. Carbon, as diamond, silicon carbide and especially the carbides of iron, chromium and tungsten are the outstanding hard products in common use. Tungsten carbide is probably the most commonly used. It is made in the electric furnace and it is important to get the right amount of carbon and the correct crystalline structure in order to obtain the greatest hardness and greatest resistance to abrasion. It may be obtained in three main divisions: wrought, cast and casehardened. Insert hard metals are common. The method of application varies, but it is generally welded to the bit, placed in channels or in drilled holes and covered with a hard surfacing metal. Robinson&apos; has given a very complete article on the use of inserts. Gregg and Küttner2 has discussed the metallography of tungsten carbides and given a good bibliography of the subject,. The time and expense of large-scale testing, together with variations in results, led to the development of a laboratory testing machine for determining the abrasive-resisting qualities of different metals. A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum. Magnetic levitation forces can be created as an antigravity field when the fluid is properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. When the gradient of the magnetic field is directed downwards, the levitation force in the fluid will be in an upward direction to float sinking nonmagnetic bodies by counterbalancing their density mismatch with the magnetic fluid. Several nonmagnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.50 to 11.35-g cm&apos; were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-g cm&apos; density fluid placed in vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.1 to 1 kilo-oersted cm-&apos;. The magnetic levitation force in dyne cm&apos; was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

An increase in electrical resistivity during aging or after quenching from high temperatures is known in a large number of alloys. Plastic deformation of alloys in this condition leads to a decrease in resistivity. This anomaly has been called the K effect. This effect has been reported in Ni-A1 alloys by several authors.&apos;-4 The nickel-rich solid solution y is in equilibrium with Ni,A1 (y&apos;) with CkAu structure. With this alloy it is therefore possible to produce a homogeneous solid solution as well as a coherent mixture of y and y. The changes in resistivity should be determined for these two conditions. In the present literature on the K effect no distinction is made between them, because of experimental difficulties to determine small coherent particles. In the present work transmission electron microscopy and image formation by (100) and (110) superlattice reflection of the y&apos; phase was employed for a detailed determination of the temperature dependence of solubility of aluminum in nickel and the resulting microstructures with alloys up to 15 at. pct Al. The solubility line follows the equation indicating a smaller solubility than given in the literature at temperatures below 700°C. X-ray scattering was used to get evidence for short-range ordering in the homogeneous solid solutions.5 Parallel to the determination of the microstructure electrical resistivity was measured as a function of aging tempera- ture, time, and aluminum content, which led to the following results: 1) Resistivity increases slightly during aging of a homogeneous solid solution which was quenched from a high temperature as a consequence of short-range order, Fig. 1, curve c,. 2) Resistivity shows a maximum during aging of all alloys which are heterogeneous according to the phase diagram, but which were obtained as a supersaturated solid solution by quenching, Fig. 1, curve c,. The increase in resistivity is mainly due to coherent precipitation of y&apos;. In Fig. 2 the effects due to short-range order pN and due to precipitation of particles APT are shown for an aging temperature of 450°C and different aluminum contents. 3) The increase in resistivity depends on the size !f the coherent particles. A critical diameter of 15 5A for the maximum was found for all alloys and aging treatments by extrapolating particle sizes determined by electron microscopy. 4) The maximum of resistivity of the heterogeneous conditions does not occur if particles, larger than the critical size, have formed already during quenching. 5) Plastic deformation destroys short-range order as well as small coherent particles. Therefore a decrease in resistivity is observed if the increase in resistivity caused originally by these phenomena is

The following additional notes about prices of coal in the early days were collected from the sources shown. Several data about canal tolls and labor conditions are also included. 1796, November: "The inhabitants lay it (coal) in at about 3;d. (83¢) sterling per bushel." (Ref. 73: p. 147.) 1804, March: "In March, 1804, I sent a person accustomed to mining to open the vein of coal, and to load the ark, which was accomplished, and early in the month of April the ark, with the first cargo of bituminous coal passed safely the Conewago falls, and landed her coal at Columbia, Lancaster County. The coal was sold at 31¢ per bushel at Columbia." ($7.75 per ton). This was the first coal from Clearfield County near the town of that name. (Letter from William Boyd: Pa. Senate Jour., 1833-1834, vol. 2, p. 561.) 1807: The following notice appeared in the Bedford Gazette: "Huntingdon, June 4. "Stone Coal.-Such of the farmers as wish to make experiment with stone coal as a substitute for plaster, in manuring their Indian corn, may be supplied with coal gratis upon application to Peter Hughes, at Mr. Riddle&apos;s mines, on the Raystown Branch. THE principal interest in the meeting sings arranged by the Geophysical Committee this year centered around the many papers dealing with the practical applications of geophysical methods to solving geological problems in many other parts of the world. The program Wednesday morning dealt with work in South Africa, Poland, and South America. Rudolph Krahmann&apos;s first paper gave a perspective of the geophysical investigations upon mineral deposits in South Africa. A striking point in his story was the tremendous increase in magnetic work during the last two or three years. This is largely accounted for by the intensive exploration for the extension of the Witwatersrand gold mining area. The author mentioned many surveys in which other methods were used for the search for ores of copper, lead, and zinc, and in the study of water-bearing and oil-bearing structures.

In order to reduce the complexity of mechanisms influencing rock. fragmentation by blasting a simulation approach is proposed, using the capabilities of microcomputer interactive graphics. Situations involving cratering end bench blasting are simulated, and both jointed and intact rocks can be subjected to explosive action, taking into consideration its breakage mechanisms. Size analysis curves relating rock distribution before and after the blasts are determined and compared with field data.

THE incandescent gas mantle is of considerable interest from the standpoint of temperature measurement because it presents a series of apparent contradictions to the established laws of radiation on which are based some of our best methods of temperature determination. One of these contradictions is that the mantle of least brightness (of the commercial thoria-ceria group) is the one having the highest temperature; this, though explicable without any violation of radiation laws, was long a stumbling block to the understanding of the performance of the mantle. Another anomaly is that the energy radiated by the mantle decreases with the rise of temperature, thus apparently invalidating total radiation methods of pyrometry, based on the fourth-power law. The discussion of methods of measuring mantle temperature which follows, is largely taken from an extensive study of the physics of the Welsbach mantle. 1 The incandescent gas mantle consists of a skeleton of refractory oxide of very light weight and open structure, formed by the ignition of a cotton or silk "stocking" previously thoroughly impregnated with salts of certain rare earths. The mantle of commerce is a mixture of approximately 99 parts of thorium oxide with 1 part of cerium oxide. This mixture, discovered largely by accident, gives luminous radiation many times greater than that from either of the constituents taken alone. It is customary to speak of the thoria as the "base" and the ceria as the "colorant," and the commercial mantle represents one of a family in which an oxide of low emissive power is employed as a base, which will assume a high temperature, while a small amount of some other oxide of high visible emissive power is added, which will reduce the temperature of the mantle but little. This is, in general, the most efficient- way, from the standpoint of visible emission, to utilize a substance of high emissive power in the visible spectrum. But it is not necessary. that two substances should be employed to produce a radiator

Alkaline alcohol solutions were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines for improving the desorption rate of gold and silver from metal-laden activated carbon generated in gold processing circuits. Factors affecting the desorption, such as temperature, alcohol content, type of alcohol, and alkalinity, were studied. Nearly complete metal desorption was obtained in 5 to 6 hr at 80º C using a solution containing about 20 vol-pct alcohol and 1 pct sodium hydroxide. Sodium sulfide was shown to be effective for selectively precipitating silver from the carbon strip solutions, thereby providing a means for producing high- purity gold by subsequent electrolysis.

In another paper I have described in general the close association of zinc-blende and iron pyrites in the ore-deposits of southwest Wis consin. These two minerals generally occur together at the same horizon, a sheet of one being overlain by a sheet of the other; and also the pyrites is disseminated through the blende to such a degree that the latter is rendered comparatively worthless for the produc tion of spelter. Ordinarily the pyrites, which is mostly the trimetric marcasite variety, occurs in about equal quantity with the blende and is separated by hand-culliug and chipping; but there are large de posits where the ores are so closely mixed that they can neither be separated by culling nor by any mechanical method. The specific gravity of the two minerals is so nearly the same that attempts often made to effect even a partial separation by jigging have proved un. successful. The smelters of zinc-ores in the Mississippi valley will not take ores which carry more than 7 per cent. of iron; and it is therefore necessary to cull the massive (&apos;jack" with great care and at consid erable expense, in order to bring it up to the market-standard of purity. The results of trials to effect a separation of blende and pyrites in other regions have been equally unsatisfactory. The literature of this branch of metallurgy abounds in examples. In Wisconsin efforts have been made in the past to " burn " the mixed ores in heaps, in order to soften or destroy the pyrites, and facilitate its separation from the massive blende. The same method has also been resorted to when galenite is mixed through the substance of the blende, for the purpose of disintegrating the ore, so that it could be separated by jigging. The custom was to pile the ore and the fuel together. As might have been expected, the results were far from satisfactory. The Nichols series system of electrolytic copper refining has successfully maintained its strong competitive position in the copper-refining industry of today; therefore the improvements made in accomplishing this result are of interest. While additional interest would lie in specific comparisons of results obtained in series operation with those in multiple, we have refrained from such a comparison because it can be fair to both only when they are operating under similar conditions on the same grade of materials. Historical The Nichols Copper Co. started a small refinery at Laurel Hill, using its present system, about 1892. The details of the process in its early stage of development were kept strictly secret, so that no information was published or interchange of ideas permitted with the staffs of other copper refineries, where the multiple system was being developed at the same time. However, the fundamentals of the process and type of cell used today differ very little from their earliest form. All operations including loading and unloading of tanks, and all transportation as well, were carried on by hand. The plant remained in this condition with a gradual expansion taking place until the World War forced such a rapid development that little time or thought could be devoted to modernization or mechanical improvement requiring careful design or detailed planning. Considerable progress was made, however. (1) Large refining furnaces were developed. (2) The old expensive air-lift type of circulation was abandoned in favor of the present system. (3) Operating technique was gradually developed to a high point of efficiency. (4) Tank construction and lining were greatly improved, the first concrete tank being installed in 1915. (This tank is still in operating condition.) (5) A new power plant was constructed. (6) Fuel oil was substituted for lump coal on the refining furnaces. (7) Mechanical casting of the finished product was accomplished. During this entire period the plant was particularly fortunate in receiving only high-grade, clean copper bullion coming principally from the Phelps Dodge mines in Arizona.
