A search through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1. Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared from metals of commercial purity, as follows: electrolytic nickel 99.60 + 0.35 Co; chemically purified silicon 99.79 per cent plus impurities of Fe 0.027, A1 0.008, Ca 0.014, C 0.004, N² 0.10; and cobalt 98.82 per cent plus impurities of Ni 0.42, Fe 0.12, CaO 0.27, S 0.012, Mn 0.10 and SiO² 0.15. DIFFERENT methods of parting gold from silver, and, on the other hand, silver from gold, were discussed in the last book; also the separation of copper from the latter and further, of lead from gold as well as from silver ; and, lastly, the methods for refining the two precious metals. Now I will speak of the methods by which silver must be separated from copper, and likewise from iron.1 The officina, or the building necessary for the purposes and use of those who separate silver from copper, is constructed in this manner. First, four long walls are built, of which the first, which is parallel with the bank of a stream, and the second, are both two hundred and sixty-four feet long. The second, however, stops at one hundred and fifty-one feet, and after, as it were, a break for a length of twenty-four feet, it continues again until it is of a length equal to the first wall. The third wall is one hundred and twenty feet long, starting at a point opposite the sixty-seventh foot of the other walls, and reaching to their one hundred and eighty-sixth foot.

The mines which I am about to describe are all situated in the northern part of the States of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila, Mexico, between the twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh degrees of latitude. They might be grouped, orographically, into four classes: 1. Those in the Sierra de la Ygnana chain; 2. Those in the Sierra de Gomez chain; 3. Those in the Cerro Mercado; 4. Those in the Sierra de San Marcos chain. (See large map.) The first two of these may be further arranged in one geographical district, to which the name, "the Villaldatna. district," may be applied, and the last may be ascribed to the geographical district of " Monclova." Geologically described, the country rock, in which four of the six mines occnr, is a limestone, concerning which a few words will be said further on, to wit.: The Arroyo (gulch), the Montanos and the Pinitos (pines), in the Villaldama district, and La Paloma (the dove), or Iron Mine, in the Monclova district. The San Rafael appears to lie in granite, or a heavy-bedded gneiss, presenting most of the characteristics of the latter, though the contact plane of the limestone is not far off. It is certainly worthy of attention that the ore occurs in that portion of the crystalline rock, which is nearest to the limestone, and it has been thought by some observers to be a true contact vein. It is well known that veins of this character are very often distinguished for constancy and richness. Although the undersigned cannot entirely free himself from the impression that this proximity of different formations has had an important influence in the origin of the part of the vein on which this mine is situated; still he was unable to establish it actually at the contact of the limestone and granite, but rather a short distance within the latter. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER is to give a brief picture of present day magnesium rolling practice, to elaborate on laboratory and development rolling experiments; and finally, to discuss the possible Future rolling of magnesium. The present production practice is so varied between various mills that it can only he concluded that no single producer is now using a process that is outstandingly superior to others. In view of this, only the general features of present day production practice have been presented and attention is focussed on the results of laboratory find development rolling of magnesium-base alloys as indications of the Future trend of magnesium rolling. MAGNESIUM ROLLING LITERATURE The literature relating to magnesium rolling is divided into three groups: the deformation mechanisms of the hexagonal magnesium crystals, the metallurgical aspects and laboratory type experiments in rolling, and finally, the articles on production rolling methods. This literature was reviewed and is summarized below. In the first group of references, the existence of basal slip in magnesium single crystals was shown by Schiebold and Siebel1 and of {102} twinning by Mathewson and Phillips2, Schmid3 predicted and partially established {101} slip at hot working temperatures. The absence of a convenient glossary- of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copy, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. A study was made to delineate the dislocation mechanistns controlling prismatic and basal slip at low temperatu.ves in titanium containing approximately 100 ppm interstitial impurities. Mechanical tests were performed on single crystals prepared from electron-beam zone-refined crystal bar by a thermal cycling technique. Measurements were made of critical shear stress and activation volume as functions of temperature. The study revealed that, for prismatic slip, two overlapping thermally activated processes aye rate-controlling below 300°K. From absolute zero to 220°K, reasonable agreement is obtained between experiment and the mechanism which involves overcoming 01. the Peierl's stress by the formation of double kinks in dislocation lines lying in close-packed directions. Between 220°and 300°K prismatic slip is controlled by a difierent thermally activated process which is characterized by a stronger temperature dependence of critical shear stress. Above 300OK, prismatic slip is controlled by an athermal process. Basal slip is controlled by a thermally activated process between 195' and 400°K. An approximate analysis suggests that it is the Peierl's mechanism that is rate-controlling in this range. Below 195°K, the occurrence of mechanical twinning obscures the features of basal slip. Above '400 X, basal slip is controlled by an athermal process. TITANIUM, an hcp metal with a less-than-ideal axial ratio of 1.587, deforms primarily by {1010}( 1210) slip at low temperatures.'-3 The critical shear stress is strongly affected by the presence of interstitial impurities. For example, churchman3 reported that a decrease in the combined nitrogen plus oxygen content from 0.1 to 0.01 pct decreased the critical shear stress for prismatic slip from 9.19 to 1.4 kg per sq mm at room temperature. Basal slip, however, is less strongly affected by interstitials; Churchman's data for {0001}( 1210) slip show a smaller decrease in critical shear stress from 10.90 to 6.3 kg per sq mm at room temperature, for the same decrease in interstitial content. In the present study, an attempt has been made to delineate the dislocation mechanisms controlling prismatic and basal slip in titanium. In view of the strong effects that impurities may have on at least some of these mechanisms, experiments were performed on material of reasonably high purity, so that comparisons could be made with investigations on material of both lower and higher impurity contents. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals were prepared from 1/4-in.-diam electron-beam zone-refined crystal bar, furnished by Materials Research Corp. The analysis of the zone-refined material is given in Table I, indicating that the interstitial content is of the same order as the purer of the two materials investigated by Churchman. The Vickers diamond pyramid hardness number of this material was 85.6. This value agrees quite well with the correlation between hardness and interstitial content proposed by Ogden and Jaffee.4 On the basis of hardness, the material investigated in this study is, therefore, intermediate in purity between that studied by Churchman (Vpn = 97) and that studied by Spangler and Herman (Vpn = 62.4).5 Single crystals were grown by thermal cycling through the a-ß transformation. Two-in.-long by 1/2-in.-diam bars were heat-treated in vacuum for 4 hr at 1160°C. The temperature of the furnace was then lowered to 865°C, and the specimens were maintained at this temperature for 7 days. This procedure was repeated several times, resulting in the growth of individual crystals up to 14 in. in length. Specimens for testing in direct shear along either {l010}(1210) or {0001}(1210) were obtained by electrical-discharge machining. The specimens were in the form of cylinders 1/4 in. in diam by approximately 1/2 in. in length, with a reduced section 1/8 in. in diam and a in. in length. All specimens were electropol-ished subsequent to electrical-discharge machining. The ends of the test specimens were cemented in stainless-steel collars. Shear tests were conducted in an Instron Tensile Tester at various temperatures from 4.2° to 508°K. Measurements were made of critical shear stress and activation volume. The latter measurements were performed by measuring the change in flow stress upon cycling the strain rate between ?1 = 2.62 x 10-3 per sec and ?2 = 2.62 x 10-4 per sec. Boron-doped p-type and arsenic-doped n-type source materials were used to deposit thin silicon films on amorphous fused quartz substrates by cathodic sputtering in argon atmospheres. All as-sputtered films were found to have high electrical resistivities of about 104 ohm-cm, despite controlled variation of the substrate temperature from 50O to 400°C. The high resistivity of the n-type films persisted even after postdeposition heat treatments as high as 1000°C, while p-type films showed a sharp decrease in re-sistivity to values on the order of 1 ohm-cm or lower after heat treatments above 650°C. X-ray and electron diffraction, together with transmission electron microscopy of the p-type films, revealed that the improved electrical properties resulted from two distinct processes. A primary crystallization or recovery within the pains, which were approximately 200Å diam in the as-sputtered films, accompanied the initial sharp drop in resistivity at 650°C. Following this process, a secondary recrystallization or discontinuous grain growth was nucleated in films heated at 1000°C. The resulting significantly increased size of certain grains and the corresponding decrease in grain boundary area accompanied an additional decrease in resistivity after heat treatment at 1000°C. The properties of thin silicon films are of interest because of their possible application in device technology. Although evaporated silicon films on amorphous substrates1-3 and both sputtered and evaporated germanium films4-' have been studied in some detail, sputtered silicon films have not been widely investigated. It has been observed that evaporated silicon films deposited at substrate temperatures below approximately 600°C are amorphous.1,3,9,10 At substrate temperatures higher than this, the films are polycrys-talline, sometimes exhibiting a fiber texture with the fiber axis normal to the substrate surface.' Similar results have been obtained with germanium films, although in this case the substrate temperature for the amorphous to crystalline transformation is reported to be as low as 150OC.5 The mechanism of film deposition by cathodic sputtering differs markedly from that of thermal evaporation. It might be expected, therefore, that the properties of sputtered and evaporated silicon films would also differ. The purpose of our study was to determine the effects of deposition conditions and heat treatments on the electrical resistivity, structure, and composition of thin silicon films sputtered on fused quartz substrates. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Apparatus. A schematic diagram of the sputtering apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The vacuum chamber was enclosed by an 18-in.-diam by 12-in.-high Pyrex bell jar mounted on a stainless-steel base plate. Access holes in the base plate were used to supply argon gas to the chamber, to allow for various electrical feedthroughs, and to provide mechanical motion to the shutter between the source material and substrate. The chamber was evacuated by a pumping system consisting of a 720 liter per sec oil diffusion pump backed by a 13 cu ft per min mechanical pump. Ultimate pressures of less than 1 x 10-6 torr could be achieved. The substrates were securely mounted on the stainless-steel substrate holder by quartz tabs held in place by stainless-steel screws. Temperatures of the substrate holder were measured by a thermocouple inserted within the holder. A quartz lamp was used to heat the holder and temperatures as high as 420°C could be maintained. Deposition Conditions and Procedure. The substrates used were polished fused quartz slides 116 by 1-12 by 3 in. and were outgassed at 200°C for 1 hr at a pressure less than 1 x 10-5 torr before film deposition. This was followed by a presputtering period of 2 hr during which the movable stainless-steel shutter was so positioned that deposition on the substrate was prevented. The subject of violent bumps in coal mines has been again brought to attention by a recent succession of such occurrences in the coal mines of the Cumberland field of eastern Kentucky and southern Virginia, which have caused fatalities and injuries to underground employees, a report on which is being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines1. The A.I.M.E. has had two valuable papers on bumps in the No. 2 Mine, Springhill, Nova Scotia, each followed by general discussion on bumps and their causes2. This paper gives a brief review of suggested causes and remedial measures given in English, Canadian and United States reports on blimps in coal mines, and then presents suggestions arising from the writer's recent investigation of the bumps in the Cumberland mines, made at the request of the mine operators, to determine the causes and remedies. These bumps, which occur under the simplest natural conditions, provide better opportunity for analysis of causes and effects than afforded under more complex conditions. The simple conditions in this field consist of relatively thin and level coal beds and uniform roof strata free from folding and faulting. Definition of Bumps Bumps in coal mines, as defined in this paper, are sudden violent bursts of coal that usually occur without warning in the extraction of pillars and may or may not be accompanied incidentally by falls of draw slate, upheaval of bottom and smashing of timbers. No one would maintain that all ore deposits or all deposits of useful minerals have been formed by the same processes. Generally they have originated by special processes of concentration but these may be of many different kinds. Some deposits have their origin in chemical or biochemical processes of concentration in rivers, lakes or seas, others developed on land by means of chemical reactions of surface waters on various forms of rocks. Certain insoluble substances remained behind; others were dissolved and precipitated in favorable places. This action proceeded in the realm of the oxidizing surface waters or in the deeper zones to which the waters from the surface could find their way. Examples of the latter kind may be found in the extensive copper and vanadium deposits of some sedimentary beds or in the lead and zinc deposits of certain broad limestone strata. In these instances the evidence for any other mode of origin would seem to be very weak indeed.' Nor does it seem possible to deny that circulating waters may form deposits of the more common metals along fissures after having dissolved many constituents from paths traversed. Another very large class has been formed by magnetic processes of concentration. The last 40 years have been a period of intense activity in the investigation and description of a vast number of deposits; all modern methods have been employed and the result is an accumulation of data, difficult or impossible to master. It has been a period similar to that in petrography. The generalizations, the able deductions, have lagged behind. Evidently several geologists have become weary of this "infinite detail" and a mistrust of the microscope seems to have arisen. Although this feeling of being swamped in microscopic detail is a painful experience, nevertheless only through the detail in combination with the large features, and only by utilizing all the related sciences shall we

P. L. Pratt (University of Birmingham, Birmingham, England)—The author has measured the hardening effect of isolated edge and screw dislocation boundaries in a remarkably elegant manner, and he proposes that the detailed structure of the boundary determines its effectiveness as a barrier to slip although "there are still unknown details of the distribution which may be extremely important." On p. 678 the author states "that for a good crystal (one having a yield of about 30 psi) a change in annealing temperature from 300" to 400 °C resulted in a negligible shift in the level of the stress-strain curve." Is this in agreement with the results of the earlier paper by Li, Washburn, and Parker8 in which such a change of temperature produced notable hardening in crystals with a yield of about 30 psi? Or were these earlier crystals, of the same nominal purity, less perfect than those used in this work? The experiment illustrated in Fig. 15, p. 681, shows that the boundary has sharpened after annealing at 400 °C, the temperature at which the hardening effect first becomes apparent. Did the author verify that no sharpening of the boundary occurred at, say, 300 °C where no hardening was found? This would seem to be an important check on the proposed mechanism, especially since zinc of this purity should polygonize at temperatures well below 400 °C within the annealing times used here. There seem to be at least two alternative explanations which could fit these facts: 1—The boundary may sharpen at 300 °C or even lower temperatures but be unable to contribute greatly to the hardening until jogged by thermal vacancies and other impurity atoms after 400 °C anneal. This mechan- ism, discussed in the earlier paper,' is believed to account for the thermal hardening observed by Blank'" in NaCl, as stated elsewhere: and by results from recent experiments which tend to confirm this view. 2—The dislocations in the diffuse boundary may be locked by impurity atoms at 300 °C and thus only sharpen the boundary at 400 °C with the aid of thermal vacancies. In this case it would be difficult to distinguish between the two sources of hardening (sharpening or jogging), using metal of this purity. Jack Washburn (author's reply)—The author wishes to thank Dr. Pratt for his discussion. In connection with his first comment, it should be pointed out that the temperature of testing in the present series of experiments was —196°C, whereas, in the earlier experiments he referred to,' it was 20°C. Therefore, the yield values should not be directly compared. It is likely that the crystals used in the present work were initially more perfect macroscopically than the large shear specimens used previously. The small size of the test section in the kink specimens made it possible to select regions of the large crystals, from which they were acid-cut, that were free of observable small angle boundaries. The sharpening of a microscopically diffuse boundary such as that in Fig. 15 begins in zinc of this purity well below 300°C. However, it is probably not justified to conclude that because a boundary looks sharp under the microscope it has attained the ideal structure. The author agrees with Dr. Pratt that jogging of dislocation lines is one of the structural features of a small angle boundary that should be important in determining its strengthening effect. My connection, under a commission from the Councils and Board of School Control of the city of Scranton, Pa., with a recent investigation of mine-caves and the resultant damages to surface-improvements, has led to the preparation, at the invitation of our Secretary, of the present paper. It is notorious that there are, in the anthracite-fields, frequent subsidences of the surface, due to the removal of the coal beneath. No particular attention is paid to such occurrences, unless they happen to injure surface-improvements. Many caves have happened in Scranton and its viciuity, which hare excited but little remark, since they have generally caused no serious damage. In August, 1909, a cave occurred in the Hyde Park section of the city, generally known as the West Side, which nearly destroyed school-house No. 16 and considerable adjacent property. Fortunately, there were no pupils in the building at the time; but the thought of the possible result, had the usual number of pupils and teachers been present, aroused the public to the gravity of the situation; and the School Board employed engineers to investigate the case. Two reports were made by separate sets of engineers, which differed in some particulars. These differences were pointed out in the public press and magnified, and the consequent agitation of the subject was taken up and greatly exaggerated by some of the metropolitan newspapers, giving to uninformed people the very erroneous impression that the whole city of Scranton was in danger of sinking into the bowels of the earth. All this tended to affect the credit of the city and to depress real-estate values. The matter was considered at a joint meeting of the Board of Trade, the Councils, and the School Board. The Hon. J. Almost everyone agrees that coal and oil shale are the only fossil fuel resources in which the United States is self-sufficient. Of the two, only coal has a technology sufficiently developed to be of intermediate term benefit. Since it takes at least 20 years to bring advanced technology into practice, it seems logical that the major focus on energy developments should be aimed at coal. Meanwhile, we need to trade-off between actions to meet our immediate needs and the various political regulations and social demands that are disrupting the coal industry and the industries dependent upon it. The largest single user of coal is the electric power generation industry. Over 300 million tons of coal are presently being consumed each year. In view of the 5-to 7-years lead time to bring in a base-load fossil-fuel fired generating station, our requirements for double this tonnage in 1980 are already well forecast; that is, if the coal companies are allowed to mine and the utilities are allowed to burn the coal.

Creep of very coarse grained high purity aluminum was studied at 400°, 700°, and 1100°F at initial stresses of 50 to 1200 psi. Local strain measurements were made across the grain boundaries and in different regions of various grains during creep, thereby permitting the drawing of component creep curves. The relative amounts of elongation as measured across a grain boundary and in the grains adjacent to the boundary depend on the temperature of testing. The significance of creep curve equations and activation energies is discussed. THIS paper presents some of the results of a research program devoted to the study of the mechanism of creep in high purity aluminum. Previous publications have dealt with the cyclic processes of alternating grain boundary sliding and migration, and the deformation in the grains caused by these processes;' the direction and the driving force of grain boundary sliding and migration;' the deformation in the grains and the restricting effects of the grain boundaries on this deformation." These previous papers were based mainly on either microscopic observations or X-ray data, or both. Sometimes creep curves across two closely spaced reference marks (about 0.6 to 0.7 mm apart) were also presented with a view to correlating the elongation values with the optical observations in general, and with certain deformation processes in particular. These curves shall henceforth be referred to as component creep curves. No attempts were made, however, to compare either the component creep curves which were obtained in different regions of a specimen, or those obtained from different specimens subjected to different creep test conditions. It is the purpose of this paper to present these component creep curves. Among the factors influencing the behaviors of these curves, those studied were stress, temperature, and grain arrangements in the specimens. It is proposed to show how greatly the deformation can vary from grain to grain and within an individual grain in a coarse grained specimen. The experimental technique and procedure have been presented.' It remains necessary to emphasize that the reference marks were produced by pressing a thin sewing needle into the surface of the specimen before the final annealing at 900°F for 24 hr and at 1150°F for 12 hr. The cold work around the needle indentations was therefore removed. The depth of these holes after electropolishing the annealed specimens was about 0.01 mm. This depth and area were negligible in comparison with the thickness of the specimens, 2.3 mm, and hence would not affect the creep behavior. Results Fig. 1 shows a development diagram of specimen P-8. The dots on the surface locate the needle point reference marks used to obtain the component creep curves. A curve obtained between two dots across a grain boundary measures not only the boundary deformation but also the deformation associated with boundary sliding occurring in the grains in the region between these indents. The original distance between two reference marks was about 0.6 to 0.7 mm. The maximum error of measurement was 0.01 mm, or in terms of percentage elongation, of the order of & 1.5 pct. Whereas the component creep curves shown in the figures to follow were drawn as a gross average of the points, in view of the fineness of some of the steps of grain boundary sliding and migration, as shown in the previous publications,¹,2 it appears logical to expect that some of the finer cycles of movement have not been delineated for the strain sensitivity of the measuring system. It seems justifiable to say that the curves are not as smooth as shown. 700°F Tests: Fig. 2 shows component creep curves across four of the grain boundaries in specimen P-8, tested at 700°F and 85 psi. In the design of structures founded in the near-surface rock, a distinction may be made between those problems that are related to the strength of the rock mass, and those that are related primarily to the compressibility of the rock mass. The mining engineer deals almost exclusively with problems involving strength in the design of open-pit slopes and underground openings. The civil engineer is similarly concerned with strength problems in the design of vehicular and water tunnels; underground power plants; cut slopes in rock for highways, canals, and spillways; and in the study of the sliding resistance of the foundations of gravity dams and the abutments of arch dams. Moreover, the civil engineer encounters problems in which the compressibility of the rock becomes the key element in the design. These problems include settlement of heavy structures supported on rock, deformation of the abutments of arch dams, and deflection of pressure tunnel linings. The design problems listed above are still solved largely on the basis of experience and rule-of-thumb. However, recent developments in rock mechanics give promise of providing more realistic approaches to certain aspects of the design. This paper, presents some of the more important recent developments which contribute to an understanding of rock behavior and which aid in design of rock structures. Typically, four steps are involved in the design of a structure, whether it be a machine element, a structural member of a building, or a structure in rock. These steps are listed below:

THE Croton water-shed furnishes the source and storage of watersupply to both the old and the new aqueduct. The Croton river rises in the southern part of Dutchess county, about 68 miles from the lower end of New York city. Its three main branches, called the East, Middle and West branches, flow southward across Putnam county, joining, near its southern boundary, to form the Croton, which continues thence in a general southwest direction across Westchester county to the Hudson river at Croton Point, about 35 miles north of the city. The water-shed above the proposed site of the Quaker Bridge dam extends about 33 miles north and south, with an average width of 11 miles, making in all about 362 square miles, from which, by complete storage, an average daily supply of 250,000,000 gallons may be collected—sufficient for the needs of the city, probably, for the next fifteen years. The water-shed above the Croton dam is 23 square miles smaller, and furnishes the present daily supply of 100,000,000 gallons.
