The following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. 'The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which mag stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. 'The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. Inasmuch as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a com-pressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Although these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. STABILIZATION of the adjustment of normal consumption to normal production of world commodities is quite different from reducing production until visible surpluses are consumed. The first means restoration and maintenance of prosperity, the second means merely a temporary alleviation of a condition with the prime cause remaining uncorrected. Overproduction of foodstuffs in some sections of the world while millions starve in other sections represents not so much overproduction of foodstuffs as mal-distribution of foodstuffs. The flour mills of Washington and Oregon normally ship quantities of flour to China. Now, the wheat that would make this flour goes East instead of West. Is this overproduction, or is there something wrong that calls for study, analysis and correction? Can the plan used by the ostrich of hiding its head in. the sand get us by this present world tragedy, or must the challenge to solve this problem be met, constructively? Can we not make out of this breakdown in the world's economic system an opportunity? And use it as the stimulus for remedying the basic cause of the trouble and not content ourselves with devising temporary expedients that aim at remedying this or that of the obvious conditions, in themselves not causes at all but rather the evidence of causes, or that are the symptoms of the real trouble.

But eventually even South Africa had to heed the dictates of trade and the obvious interests of its great gold-mining industry. In December, 1932, South Africa's currency severed its golden bonds. Here are summarized 162 papers, published between 1933 and 1967, that deal with various aspects of ore genesis. Emphasis is placed on additions to, or modifications of, ore-formation theory, no matter what type of deposit is discussed. More space is given to papers on the formation of base-metal sulfides solely because more papers are written on this subject. The final conclusion is reached that a chemically and geologically sound theory for the genesis of ore deposits can be built around the concept of concentration of ore e’ements in a magmatically produced ore fluid and around such surface processes as may act to concentrate economically valuable materials from rocks of any origin exposed at the surface.

In the United States the value of gold- and silver-ores is everywhere reckoned in ounces troy of the metal per " short ton " (2000 lbs. avoird.) of the ore. In the case of silver, which fluctuates in market value, the New York quotation on a given day must be known, in order to determine the gross value of an ore at that date. In Mexico the assay is reported 'in kilogrammes of silver or grammes of gold per metric ton. As everyone is aware, this is practically a percentage system, 1 kg. of silver per metric toll (1000 kg.) being 0.1 per cent., and 1 gramme of gold per metric ton, 0.0001 per cent. The notation is simple and convenient for both assayer and miner.* The Mexican government purchases at an unvarying price for silver, payable in silver, and at a fixed price for gold, payable in gold if the seller insists, but preferably in silver at about the rate of exchange between U. S. gold coin and Mesican silver coin. The value of silver is $40.915 per kilogramme in Mexican silver dollars. That of gold is $675.416 per kilogramme in gold coin. The mints do not, as a rule, issue gold dollars, as the government keeps them to pay the interest on the national debt. Almost all bullion containing a considerable percentage of gold is shipped to foreign countries (principally the United States) to be refined. FOSTER BAIN.+ THE recently aroused public interest in the conservation of our natural resources has peculiar importance to mining-men, since they deal with resources which are stored products. Within certain limits, the fertility of a worn-out soil may be restored, deforested areas can be replanted, one year's wasted water-supply is followed by another; but coal and ores, once taken out, cannot be mined again, and should therefore be conserved with especial care. This means, however, not that mining should be restricted, but that it should be done most economically and with the minimum of waste.

As a producer of gold and platinum, Colombia is most emphatically an important country. Last year it produced 656,000 oz. of gold-twice as much as any other country in South America, in fact accounting for a third of the production of that continent. In platinum, world data for 1941 are not available, but in 1939 Colombia exported 39,000 oz., apparently ranking fourth among the world's producing countries, being exceeded only by Canada, Russia, and the Union of South Africa. Colombia was always a mining country. Centuries before the Conquest, Indians mined gold, copper, silver, salt, and emeralds. The Spaniards simply intensified mining. The Bank of the Republic states that from 1493 to 1940 52,177,427 oz. of gold was produced by Colombia, and official Chocó statistics show that about $60,000,000 worth of platinum was mined between 1908 and 1941. These figures are impressive indeed considering that only rich pockets and surface showings were mined by the ancients.

In the following paper it is aimed to present only an outline of the geologic relations of the ores, since the Appalachian geology of Alabama has been discussed by many previous writers, but to describe rather fully the ore of the Birmingham district, and to discuss its relations and probable extent. IT. OUTLINE OF THE GEOLOGY. 1. Stratigraphy. The pre-Pennsylvanians rocks exposed in and along the borders of the valley-regions of Alabama, range from middle Cambrian to Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous), and at the SW. extremities of the valleys these rocks are overlain by coastal-plain deposits of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. I HAVE been puzzled by two lines of thought'; one emanating from Washington, D. C., to the effect that we must all cheer up, that in a very short time, measured in terms of months, prices would begin to recover, business would become normal, and prosperity would continue on its way just as before the interruption of a year ago; and a second, coming from certain industrialists and economists, expressing fears that all commodity prices were in for a long downward trend, which would cause much unemployment, eventually drag down wages and so restrict purchasing power as to further aggravate the situation. One basis for the fear of a downward trend in commodity prices' is that ifter great wars a depression could last for something like 40 years-the downward trend to such a depression after our recent World War having been postponed for some reason or other; and the basis for another fear was that the production of gold was becoming less. I had 'also been trying for some time past to refresh my recollection as to how my ow11 particular lead interest climbed out of the depression of 1893; and as all the metals have had, and still have. relative values and prices, I can best express what I have in mind by talking principally about lead.

ONE LAW cannot he evaded, the economic law of supply and demand. Silver, like any other commodity, is subject to this law; and its price in the long run is determined by existing conditions. I say "in the lone run because at times silver has appeared to mope contra to basic coalitions. Such movements, however, are, occasioned by the market's attempt to anticipate changes in these governing conditions. If the expected changes materialize then the new market level is justified, but if they do not then the market will revert to its previous status, A striking example of such a move occurred in November when the price advanced over 70, in ten days and then in the next two weeks lost more than it had gained. The reasons for this advance were that the speculative element interpreted certain events as favorable to silver namely, England suspension of the gold standard, higher shat prices, and the Chinese-Japanese crisis. When these expectations proved unjustified the inevitably, elapse followed became the governing conditions had not channel.

WAR undoubtedly accelerates metallurgical progress, although its most obvious effect is a tremendous waste of materials. The necessity for restrictions in normal uses of metals results in a search for substitutes or for enhanced properties that will make a limited supply last longer. An insatiable demand for more metal to be produced more quickly favors trial of new processes, new metallurgical tools, and new methods of fabrication. Greatest advance is made, of course, in practical physical and process metallurgy. Theoretical or fundamental research necessarily must take a secondary position, and is so regarded in this review. It is not that developments in theoretical physical metallurgy are lacking entirely, but, following the same trend noted in other countries as they entered war activities, attention in the U.S.A. has been shifted strongly to those developments having an immediate practical application.

H. H. Hausner (Sylvania Electric Products Inc., Bayside, N. Y.)—I tested the 18-8 stainless steel powder described by Grobe and Roberts and the results were excellent. The powder was compacted and sintered in purified hydrogen to a very low density (approximately 20 pct and more porosity). Where the other powders show very little ductility when sintered to such a low density, the described stainless steel was surprisingly high in ductility. I would appreciate it if the authors could give us some data on a similar powder but without silicon and also data on 430 stainless steel powder. H. S. Kalish (Sylvania Electric Products lnc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—I should like to verify the excellent results obtained by Grobe and Roberts with their pre-alloyed stainless steel powder. It seems to me, however, that their data are conservative and that even better densities and higher tensile strength can be obtained with these powders by the selection of proper particle size fractions. The accompanying data were obtained by sintering compacts pressed from the powder made by Vanadium-Alloys Steel Co. to 0.8 in. in diam about % in. high in a cylindrical double action die without the use of lubricant. The compacts were sintered for 1 hr at 2370°F in hydrogen purified by passing it through a Deoxo unit (palladium catalyst) and a Lectrodryer. Even the density obtained using the as-received (—100 mesh) compacted at 40 tsi was quite high as was the hardness. This indicates that by increasing the sintering temperature slightly above 2350°F the coining and subsequent secondary sintering operation can be avoided. With the — 325 mesh fraction, however, very much higher density can be obtained and a high hardness. I have no tensile data to present, but I feel that it is not too optimistic to expect. that unusually high tensile strengths and good ductility can be obtained in this sintered material on the basis of the density and hardness data. The sintered stainless steel made by the above-described methods came out of the furnace very bright and clean. The purified hydrogen atmosphere is important in sintering stainless steel to reduce the oxide present in the powder. The result of such a sintering is good densification and good ductility of the sintered product. G. A. Roberts (authors' reply)—We are greatly indebted to Messrs. Hausner and Kalish for their discussions of our paper. Their encouraging remarks are greatly appreciated and their confirmatory data will do much to add to the value of the paper. At the present time it is impossible to provide complete data on a similar stainless steel powder without silicon, but we do know that, in general, the properties are slightly inferior. Data on such a powder and on other stainless steel types are to be published in the near future.

FIGURES for the first 11 months of 1935 indicate that the total coal production of the United States for 1935 will be approximately 416,000,000 tons, or almost identical with the production figures for 1934. Bituminous production will show a gain of about six million tons, and anthracite production a loss of about the same tonnage, compared with the previous year. This does not take into account so-called "bootleg" anthracite coal amounting to approximately 5,000,000 tons. Twenty-nine years ago, in 1906, the production of coal was almost identical with this year's production. At that time, 626,000 men were employed in producing this tonnage, which took a toll of 2138 lives from accidents. In 1935, approximately 540,000 men were required to produce the same tonnage with an estimated loss of 1155 lives. This shows definite safety advancement in the industry, but even so accidents are still costing an average of 3c. a ton more than they should.

CUSHMAN TUNNEL No. 2 is adjacent to the Hood Canal, near potlatch, Wash. It is 17 ft. inside .diameter, about 13,000 ft., or two and one- half, miles in length, and is a part of the second unit of the Cushman power project. It connects Cushman ' Dam No. 2 and the penstocks that lead to the power house on the beach about 400 ft. vertically below the outlet of the tunnel. One shaft, 190 ft. deep, and two adits between 300 and 400 ft. long, were provided to speed up driving operations. his arrangement gave 6 working headings, which were operated 24 hr. daily. The shaft provided a manway, cageway, and skipway.
