Except in the case of a few metals—silicon, bismuth, cadmium, lead, zinc, and tin—an aluminum-rich compound is formed in each binary system, which forms a eutectic with the aluminum or its solid solution with this compound: Thus such compounds as FeAla, CuA12, Mg4Al3, and NiAls are formed, which are found in aluminum-rich alloys of their respective series as eutectics with the aluminum solid solution. These compounds are, in all cases, hard and brittle and their presence affects profoundly the physical properties of the alloys in which they occur. Within the zinc-aluminum system a compound, Al2Zn,, is formed that decomposes at lower temperatures. Silicon and tin each form a simple eutectiferous series with aluminum; bismuth, lead, and cadmium are only partly miscible in the liquid state with it. The extent of the solubility in aluminum, in solid solution, of these compounds or of the elements themselves, in the case of those series in which compounds are not formed, is of the greatest importance in

INTRODUCTION The committee on Rock Mechanics, Japanese Society for Civil Engineers, has been discussing 'soft rock engineering in Japan' and presented several papers concerning dam, tunnel, bridge and slope constructions to International Symposium on Weak Rock, Tokyo 1981. This is the summarized paper based on References of Okamoto et a1 (1981), Iida et a1 (1981), Working Group on Tunneling-JSCE (1981), Working Group on Bridge Foundations-JSCE (1951) and Kikuchi et a1 (1981), which can convey general view on engineering experiences with weak rocks in Japan. From the point of view to the origin and/or distinctive physical properties, weak rocks in Japan may be classified into (1) sedimentary, (2) weathered, (3) low welded-pyroclastic and (4) fractured ones. Their typical characteristics are summarized in the following section. Concerning dam foundations on soft rock, several hundreds have already been constructed and, at present, nearly one hundred are under construction or at planning stage. These dams, almost without exception, have some problems such as site selection, material selection for fill-type and concrete dams, design of dam and its foundation, and construction procedures, requiring special ingeneous and cautious measures to cope with the local geotechnical difficult situations. In tunneling, for the decade of 1970s, the number of tunnels in soft rock either completed or under construction was at least 160, including Seikan Tunnel of 53.9 km long, Nakayama Tunnel of 14.8 km long and so on. A knowledge of the mutual liquid solubility of zinc and lead is of importance in various phases of zinc metallurgy. The determination of this solubility has been the subject of numerous investigations, but unfortunately the results vary widely, particularly at higher temperatures, and it has been impossible to decide what data are most reliable. It was decided to investigate the matter and in view of the disagreement in the published results, it was felt necessary to take rather unusual precautions to insure the reliability of the data. For this reason determinations were made by four different methods, and the procedures of several of the previous investigators were duplicated. The previously used methods can be divided into two classes: methods involving freezing the entire melt and taking samples of the lead-rich and zine-rich phases in the solid state,l,2 and methods in which the samples are taken while the bath is liquid and at the desired temperature.3,4 Data obtained by methods involving freezing the entire melt show much lower solubility of lead in zinc than methods in which the liquid is sampled at temperature. The latter method was used by Spring and Romanoff5 and by Hass and Jellinek.6 The results of these two investigations are in agreement at temperatures near the melting point but at higher temperatures Hass and Jellinek find a higher mutual solubility. The low-temperature section of the zinc-lead equilibrium diagram is given by Peirce and Anderson.7 The diagram is based on the data of Hodge and Heyer,8 Arnemann,9 and Peirce.10

The problem of vein formation has been of particular interest to the writer for years. As his work for a long time was confined largely to districts showing large deposits of copper ore, it was natural that the efficiency of replacement, as one if not the chief control of the emplacement of the ore, seemed a particularly attractive hypothesis. Of late years, in almost daily underground work in the Guanajuato district, he has collected evidence which makes it certain that in a number of cases the ore solutions were under sufficient pressure to force the rock walls apart and to hold them apart, thus offering an open space for the deposition of vein and ore-bearing material. This paper will concern itself with conditions frequently met with in hypogene ore deposits of the vein type, and will deal in particular with ore occurrence in precious-metal veins of the type classified by Lindgrenl as epithermal deposits, or metalliferous deposits formed near the surface by ascending thermal waters2 and in genetic connection with igneous rocks. To account for the emplacement of this type of ore deposit various writers have suggested the following agencies: 1. Shattering of the wall rocks. 2. Pressure of growing crystals. 3. Magmation, as treated at length by Spurr3. 4. Replacement. 5. Openings produced by folding. 6. Shearing due to gravity. 7. Shrinkage produced by the passage of pre-ore solutions. 8. Contraction joints produced by lateral secretion. To this list there may be added another agency, a discussion of which forms the basis of this paper: 9. Pressure of the ore-bearing solutions.

The brown-coal opencast mines in Germany's Rhineland have to cope with several problems. Predominant are densely populated areas with highly productive farmland, many railroads, highways, and rivers, as well as towns and farm settlements which have to be removed before or during the lifetime of a mine. Also the ground- water table has to be lowered to keep the deep opencast mines dry and stable. These problems urged a development towards deep opencast mines with powerful machines; the large material movement and the high coal production are the basis for the economic success in working the Rhenish brown-coal deposits. Up to now, bucket wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 100,000 m3 (130,000 cu yd) are in operation. Machines of twice this capacity are under construction. Corresponding to the excavators development, the stackers' capacity has to be increased too. The new stackers will reach a daily capacity of 240,000 m3 (310,000 cu yd). The haulage in the mine is performed by conveyor belt systems, which are arranged in such a manner that the belt lines meet at a belt switching point. Here the incoming lines may be connected to the outgoing ones so as to direct the material flow to the desired receiving stations. At the moment there are conveyor belts in operation with a width of 2.2 m (7.2 ft); the new belts will have a layout for 37,000 t/h (40,770 stph), the width of which amounts to 3.0 m (9.8 ft). All belts and driving stations on benches are shiftable.

The year 1927 witnessed numerous developments of significance in California. The State's shut-in production increased from an average of 58,000 bbl. daily in January to a maximum of 93,000 bbl. daily in August, and a total of about 25,000,000 bbl. was withheld from the market during the year. This not only lessened the effect of large production at Hunt-ington Beach, Seal Beach and Alamitos Heights, but also was a most effective conservation move. Since 1922, it is estimated that approximately 100,000,000 bbl. of oil that would otherwise have been produced have been held in the ground. I. Outstanding Field Developments of 19271 1. Huntington Beach finished the year 1926 with a production of 102,000 bbl. daily, which declined to 60,000 bbl. by the end of 1927. Due to production in these three areas and the tempering effect of shutting in numerous wells, the California production curve for 1927 was held at a fairly even level. During the two years in which the new reduction-works of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. have been in operation at Douglas, Ariz., there has developed a remarkable condition in regard to the corrosive action of the water used to cool the jackets of the blast-furnaces. Were it not for the many contradictory features, it might pass as one of the unavoidable troubles due to the composition of the water. This water, obtained from wells 600 ft. deep, is also used in the steam-boilers, and its composition, as shown by the following analysis, does not indicate the presence of any ingredient which would explain the corrosion: Grains Per U. In from 10 to 12 months the inner plates have been reduced by corrosion to a thickness of from + to & in., while the outer plate in the same time is reduced by less than 1/16 in., and the stiffeners show very little corrosion. The plates are pitted and eaten away in some places more than in others. There is practically no scale found on the jackets, but when cleaned considerable iron oxide is found in the bottoms. PROPERTIES of materials containing a hard con-stituent dispersed in a metallic matrix are dependent on the distribution of the hard phase.'-' The grain growth of titanium carbide in liquid nickel was studied in order to understand microstructural development in this and similar systems. Smith" has examined the influence of surface energy on the distribution of phases in alloys. The grain growth of tungsten carbide in cobalt has been the subject of many conflicting theories. Those prior to 1950 have been summarized by Goetzel.' Recently, Gurland and Norton3 and Gurland8 have indicated that growth occurs primarily by diffusion through the liquid phase in order to lower the inter-facial energy between the carbide and the liquid metal. In the development of the Ti-C-Ni ternary phase diagram, Stover and Wulff9 have shown that both eutectiferous dendritic titanium carbide, and primary titanium carbide which had developed crystals of cubic symmetry, were rounded by heating below the solidus, and that if primary carbide was already present the typical eutectic decomposition products were not formed. Experimental Procedure The infiltration technique was used to study the grain growth of titanium carbide in nickel. In contrast to sintering, infiltration more readily assures uniform dispersion of the two phases, and the problems associated with mixing by milling; i.e., mill contamination, breakdown of original carbide size in the operation, development of interfering surface films, etc., are avoided. In addition, the complicating effect of densification by shrinkage is eliminated. The titanium carbides used were commercial grades. IN a Bolivian tin concentrator an appliance was needed to furnish a suitable product for fine jigging from a pulp of the following composition: Mesh Per Cent. +20 8.0 +40 36.5 +60 9.0 +80 10.5 +100 5.5 +150 4.51 -150 25.0 99.0 Loss 1.0 IN the jigging process, particles of cassiterite as small as 0.1 mm. can be recovered, provided they are not present in excess, that is if the material treated on the jigs contains sufficient coarser sands to keep the interstices between the grains open. Removing the fine material from the pulp by screening, to prepare the jig feed, is impractical, because that means the use of an 80-mesh screen or finer, and is not as effective as hydraulic classification. A screen would eliminate mineral grains from the feed which can be recovered by jigging, and in addition would throw more gangue and low-grade middling on to the jig. Formerly a one-spigot Richards vortex classifier had been used to accomplish this separation, but the tangential openings through which the hydraulic water enters became clogged by fine vegetal matter with which the water was contaminated, and which it was impossible to remove from the water. Consequently the work of the classifier was imperfect and a good deal of slime was sent to the jig. When designing the plant referred to in this paper it was decided to use a hydraulic classifier as shown in Fig. 1. The essential features had been copied from the Anaconda classifier.1 This remodeled classifier consists of a truncated pyramidal wooden hooper A with an attachment of cast iron

Ametallographic study has been made of the peritectoid transformation as it occurs in two Ag-A1 alloys, containing 6.0 and 6.9 wt pct Al, respectively. After equilibrating at 475°C, these alloys were transformed isothermally just below the peritectoid temperature which lies at about 450°C.1-3 Peritectoid transformation in this alloy system consists in the reaction of a and 5 to form µ. The crystal structures of the a, µ, and 5 phases have been determined as face-centered-cubic, 6 manganese, and hexagonal-close-packed, respectively. At the peritectoid temperature their equilibrium compositions are approximately 5.85, 7.02, and 7.24 wt pct (19.92, 23.2, and 23.8 atomic pct) aluminum."" The transformation might be expected to occur principally at the interface between the a and 5, but such is not the case. Instead, the major part of the transformation occurs by the direct (and perhaps initially diffusionless) conversion of 5 to µ. The composition range of the forming µ nearly overlaps that of the parent at the temperature of transformation" so that little, if any, composition change is required. Transformation proceeds by the nucleation of µ at points upon the external surface of the sample and sweeps through the 5 phase, leaving the a initially almost undisturbed. Subsequently, the a phase participates in the transformation by being partly or totally converted to µ. Specimens approximately 1/4 x 1/4 x 1/16 in. were cut from cast ingots, previously equilibrated 68 hr at 588°C. The specimens were held for 3 hr at

Recrystallization of cold-worked metals has long been known to proceed by a process of nucleation and growth.' When a cold-worked metal is heated to a temperature at which recrystallization will ensue, nuclei of new grains, essentially strain-free, appear and grow. As the process proceeds, nuclei continue to appear and to grow, until the cold-worked matrix has been entirely consumed and recrystallization has been completed (Fig. I). Conducted isothermally, a measurement of the fraction of the matrix recrystallized plotted against time, yields an isothermal recrystallization curve, showing the time course of the recrystallization process (Fig. 2).2 Evidently, then, the rate of recrystallization is determined by the rate at which nuclei form and the rate at which they grow. The rate of nucleation N is the number of nuclei that form in unit time in unit volume of the unrecrystallized matrix, and the rate of growth G is the increase in radius of the recrystallized grain per unit time. In recent years attempts have been made to determine N and G as these vary with the well-recognized variables affecting recrystallization: time, temperature, degree of deformation, etc.1 Such studies yield information that is more fundamental than that conveyed by the conventional recrystallization diagram,' since the rate of recrvstallization is thus analyzed into its two component rates3 Methods are now available by which N and G can be measured, and analytical expressions have been developed for the interrelationships among N, G, the isothermal recrystallization curve, and the final grain size, which greatly facilitate analysis.2-4 The application of these methods has been demonstrated recently for the recrystallization of silicon ferrite.2 Data on N and G in dependence upon the recognized recrystallization variables are, however, very fragmentary;" values of N and G have been determined for some metals, but the effect of temperature, which would yield the fundamentally important activation energies, has been too little studied. Thus far there has been no detailed study of the recrystallization of any one metal in terms of X and G ovcr appreciable ranges of the variables time, temperature, degree of deformation, and original grain size. It is the purpose of the present paper to provide such a study, employing aluminum.

Y.)—Since porosity is known to form in the copper side of Cu-Ni couples during diffusion24,25 it is of importance to consider this factor in interpreting the large variations of chemical diffusivity with copper concentration reported for this system. The presence of porosity may affect the measurement of D in two ways: 1—density changes in the couple invalidate the usual solutions of the diffusion equation, and 2—the pores may act as short-circuiting paths when transport through the vapor or along internal surfaces is appreciable or else as open circuits when these effects are small. The error produced by the first effect may be estimated by a graphical analysis. Fig. 8 shows the porosity generated in the copper side of the Kirkendall interface of a pure nickel vs pure copper couple after diffusion for 350 hr at 1040°C in hydrogen. In Fig. 9 the actual diffusion curve which would be obtained by the usual slicing technique is shown as a solid line drawn to the same scale (from the data of da Silva and Mehl"). The amounts of porosity (obtained by lineal analysis) and of nickel are graphically represented by the hatched areas. The standard solutions of the diffusion equation are valid only when all volume elements of unit length and unit cross section contain equal numbers of atoms." It is possible to correct the experimental curve to satisfy this condition by shrinking the couple in the direction of diffusion in such a way as to eliminate the porosity.* The corrected diffusion curve obtained after

The desirability of bringing about greater uniformity in specifications governing iron and steel is generally recognized, and has found expression within recent years, in the efforts of numerous technical societies in that direction. When the International Association for Testing Materials was organized at Zurich in 1895, a committee was appointed, charged as follows: " On the basis of existing specifications, to seek methods and means for the introduction of international specifications for testing and inspecting iron and steel of all kinds." The American representation on this international committee consisted originally of five, and now of eight members. In view of the magnitude and importance of the subject, the Executive Committee of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, since incorporated as the American Society for Testing Materials, appointed a committee of 34 members, including the American members of the above-named international committee, to frame standard American specifications for iron and steel. This committee reported on specifications for (1) Structural Steel for ridges and Ships; (2) Structural Steel for Buildings; (3) Open-Hearth Boiler-Plate and Rivet-Steel; (4) Steel Rails; (5) Steel Splice-Bars; (6) Steel Axles; (7) Steel Tires; (8) Steel Forgings; (9) Steel Castings ; (10) Wrought-Iron. These specifications were designed to be fairly representa-tive of the best current American practice, and were adopted by letter-ballot of the Society in August, 1901. The leading engineering societies have participated at various times in the discussion of these specifications and have lent valuable assistance through the appointment of special committees on like, or closely related, subjects. HAULAGE was one of the many problems to be solved in the successful handling of the Miami Copper Company's low-grade orebody. The ore extracted had to be increased from 1000 to 18,000 tons per 24 hours over the existing track-age and haulage way. This called for increased speed, longer trains, in¬creased car capacity, and a block signal system so as to maintain a fixed schedule and headway. The motive power in service at the time of this transition consisted of Baldwin-Westinghouse 6-ton trolley locomotives. (See Fig. 3.) These locomotives were purchased to handle twenty inverted-V-bottom side-dump cars of 60 cu. ft. capacity. Dimensions were limited as to height on account of ore chutes, width on account of short radius curves, and length of 12 ft. from bumper to bumper- so that the locomotives could be handled on the man and material hoist which has a cage length of 121/ ft. The limited length made it possible to bring the locomotives to the surface for periodic overhauling and major repairs such as changing wheel tires, gears, and

The effect of Cr2O3 on melting relations of iron oxide at oxygen pressures slightly above those prevailing in contact with metallic iron has been determined. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of wüstite are raised by the addition of Cr2O3, from 1385°C for pure iron oxide to 1420°C at the peri-ledie point where wüstite, iron chromite, liquid, and gas coexist in equilibrium under the atmospheric conditions used in the present investigation (CO2/H2 = 1). It has been shown in a previous investigation1 that the liquidus and solidus temperatures of iron oxide are drastically increased by the addition of Cr2O3 under the relatively oxidizing conditions prevailing in air. This is to be expected in view of the easy substitution of cr3+ for Fe3+ in crystalline oxide structures which are stable at high oxygen pressures, as demonstrated for instance by the completeness of the solid solution series Fe2O3-Cr2O3 at high temperatures (>1000°C). The stable phase of iron oxide at oxygen pressures approximating those prevailing when metallic iron is present is wüstite. This phase, although commonly represented by the simplified formula FeO for sake of convenience, in reality has a defect structure in which a part of the iron ions are present as Fe3+. It is to be expected that at least a limited amount of cr3 ions will substitute for Fe in this structure when Cr2O3 is added to wüstite. Depending on the ease of this substitution in comparison with that of cr3 substitution for Fe in iron oxide-Cr2O3 liquids under the same atmos- pheric conditions, the liquidus and solidus temperatures of wüstite may increase or decrease upon addition of Cr2O3. The methods of establishing these melting relations and the results obtained are presented in the following. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) General Procedure. The quenching technique was used in this study. Oxide mixtures were heated at chosen constant temperatures in an atmosphere consisting of equal parts of CO2 and H2 until equilibrium was established among gas and condensed phases. The samples were then quenched in mercury to room temperature, and the phases present were determined by microscopic and X-ray investigation. 2) Preparation of the Mixtures. Starting mixtures were prepared by weighing and thoroughly mixing Fe2O3 and Cr2O3, or wüstite and Cr2O3. The Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 used were "Baker Analyzed" reagent grades, whereas wüstite of composition was synthesized by reducing Fe203 at 1325°C in an atmosphere consisting of equal parts of CG andHz. In order to avoid contact with crucibles, the equilibration runs were made with small pellets suspended from thin (-0.004-in.) platinum wires. Mixtures made from FOs and Cr203 were readily pelletized at a pressure of 500 atm in a 9.5-mm die, whereas mixtures made from wüstite and Cr203 when treated identically were too weak for handling. In order to obtain a stronger product, these pellets were sintered by heating for 2 min at -1200°C in the same atmosphere as was subsequently used for the equilibration runs (CG/H2 = 1:1). During the sintering, these pellets were wrapped in thin (0.0004-in.) platinum foil, which was stripped off before the equilibration runs. In order to reduce the time needed for equilibrium to be attained, preliminary equilibration of relatively large pellets of each mixture was carried out at -1200°C for 4 to 12 hr. Smaller pellets

The co-operation of the members of the Institute is earnestly sought by the Committee on Nominations, recently appointed by the Board of . Directors, in its work of formulating a ticket for officers and places falling vacant in the Board of Directors in February, 1916. The Committee must present the official ticket of nominations to the Board of Directors at its October meeting. Members are, therefore, urged to send promptly their nominations for officers and Directors in order that the Committee may have an opportunity to give them full consideration. F. Lynwood Garrison, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the Secretary): I have been specially interested in Mr. Drake's valuable contribution to our knowledge of the Chinese coalareas, as I had occasion, about a year ago, to make a reconnoissance over some of the coal-fields in the Yangtse river valley. I noticed, as he appears to have done, certain peculiarities which may eventually prove to be characteristic of the Chinese coal-measures, at least in central and northern China. The most striking feature, perhaps, is the invariable proximity of the great granite masses to those coal-deposits which have an anthracite character. In common with all other anthracite areas elsewhere, the Chinese show evidences of profound stratigraphical disturbances. The sedimentary rocks are folded, faulted and dislocated in a manner similar to those of the Pennsylvania anthracite-regions. It would seem that the intrusive granite had much to do with converting the original bituminous into present anthracite. The action of the granite was probably direct as a conveyor of heat, and indirect as dynamic force in dislocating, overturning, and compressing the coal-measures. My stay in China was unfortunately cut short, so that I was unable to collect fossils, or to give this highly interesting and important subject more than passing attention. Cholnoky* and Richthofen are practically agreed that these granite eruptions took place during the Tertiary period—probably the Eocene. This profound tectonic movement has had a most important effect upon the geological conditions in central and northern China, and will be, I am sure, a potent factor in the economic development. Evidences of disturbances and metamorphism are very abundant in the anthracite-areas of the Yangtse valley. I noticed the coal in them, as did Mr. Drake in northern China, to be often flaky and " slickensided."
