Experimental viscosity data for methane are presented for temperatures from 100 to 340F and pressures from 200 to 8,000 psia. A summary is given of the available data for methane, and a comparison is presented for that data common to the experimental range reported in this paper. Correlation of the data is presented, and predicted values are given for temperatures up to 460F and pressures up to 10,000 psia. INTRODUCTION The increasing ranges of temperature and pressure at which fluids are produced, transferred and processed in the petroleum and chemical industries stress the need for accurate information on physical properties, both for engineering calculation and for improving the methods used to estimate physical properties. A survey of the literature reveals that disagreements between published data on the viscosity of methane are common and that most investigations have been conducted over restricted temperature and pressure ranges. This situation made it desirable to undertake an investigation with a scope common to most of the literature data available. APPARATUS AND MATERIALS The apparatus used in this investigation was the capillary tube viscometer'described by Dolan,10 with modifications introduced in the general design and operation of the instrument. It has an effective pressure range from 14.7 to 10,000 psia and a temperature range from room temperature to 400F. The design of the viscometer is based on the establishment of a manometric head between two vessels containing the test fluid and a volume of mercury. The reservoirs are connected by a capillary tube through which the test fluid flows and a tube through which mercury flows. A pressure gradient is established by elevating one of the vessels above the other, the resulting flow of mercury displacing the test fluid through the capillary. The schematic diagram of the system (Fig. 1) shows the arrangement of the equipment auxiliary to the viscometer. The density cells assembly (E, Fig. 1) was not used in this investigation since reliable data are available on methane. 23 The assembly consists of a bank of eight 316 stainless steel pycnometers. Experimental values of the density of a natural gas19 and i-butane14 samples have been obtained for pressures up to 8,000 psia and temperatures up to 340F. The methane used was obtained from the Southern California Gas Co. Mass spectrometric analysis showed a composition of 99.8 percent CH4, 0.1 percent C2H6 and 0.1 percent C3H8. EXPERIMENTAL VALUES AND ACCURACY OF DATA Determinations were carried out at several temperatures. With the temperature in the cabinet controlled at a given level, a series of runs were made at various pressures. To establish pressures lower than that obtained from the methane cylinder, it was necessary to vent the gas slowly to the atmosphere until the desired pressure was reached. The consistency of the test run time for a particular condition can be used as a criterion for the accuracy of the data. A further check is obtained by comparison of the viscosity values obtained using different driving heads. To establish the instrument's reproducibility, a large number of runs were made at three completely different conditions of temperature and pressure. Data obtained were analyzed statistically to determine the most reliable value for the variance of the experimental data. It was found that the variances of the data taken at different experimental conditions were not statistically equivalent, but they were small. The largest variance was found at 8,000 psia and 100F, where the standard deviation was 0.385 micropoise. Therefore, 99.9 percent of the data can be expected to fall within 1.15 micropoises of the population mean, except for the intervention of systematic errors in operation.

It was one of the first works erected for the metallurgical treatment of gold ores, and the only one established in Colorado on a large scale which has been uniformly successful. Both gold and silver ores are treated, and gold, silver, and copper produced. The lead is not separated from the ores nor paid for, if it exists, and is entirely lost in the residues. The works were planned and built by Professor Hill, formerly Professor of Chemistry in Brown University, Providence, R. I., and is still managed by him, assisted by Mr. Richard Pearce, formerly professor in the School of Mines at Truro, England. They are very advantageously situated with regard to the ore-producing regions, having Boulder County on the north, which produces, besides ordinary gold ores, a series of tellurium minerals, such as altaite, sylvanite, and hessite, which are very rich in gold and silver. They are associated with copper and iron pyrites, blende, galena, and the carbonate and oxides of iron. Gilpin County itself produces for the most part the pyrites of iron and copper rich in gold, with a small quantity of galena and blende, which is rich in silver. The quality of aggregate materials is of major importance in governing durability and permanence of concrete structures. The problem of selecting suitable aggregate materials is two-fold. Geological factors include the type and character of the aggregate source, presence of known or suspected reactive constituents, and presence of thermally incompatible materials. Laboratory investigations include petrographic studies, soundness and reactivity tests, and tests of thermal properties. The importance of each factor in the selection of satisfactory aggregate material is considered in detail.

FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,400. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service. "It shall be within the discretion of the Board of Directors to establish a medal to be known as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal to be awarded at such a time and under such rules as may be determined by the Board of Directors, for Distinguished Achievement in Mining Administration." The establishment of this medal was announced at the annual meeting in February, 1932, the term "mining" being defined in its broad sense to include metallurgy and petroleum. THE Balatoc mine, one of the Haussermann group,[t] is on the Island of Luzon, the largest of the Philippine group, about 260 km. north of Manila, and 12 km. from the city of Baguio. The Baguio district is the most important gold-mining area of the Philippines, with 14 producing mines in 1939, milling 2,3;8,894 tons of ore, yielding [P]40,881,048, approximately 55 per cent of the total Philippine production of [P]74,131,216. PRODUCTION HISTORY The Balatoc mine began production in January 1929 with a 150-ton cyanide mill. Increases in mill capacity have taken place as follows: March, 1932, to 350 tons June, 1933, to 470 tons December, 1933, to 515 tons July, 1934, to 700 tons December, 1934, to 1000 tons May, 1935, to 1200 tons October, 1938, to 1300 tons April, 1939, to 2000 tons January, 1941, to 2150 tons Production during the period of expansion has steadily increased in total value in spite of the fact that grade of ore milled has dropped-from $31.06 in 1929 to $5.78 in 1940. Annual reports give production as shown in Table 1, the average values being based on gold at the old price of $20.67 per ounce. [ ] GEOLOGY The ore occurs in quartz-calcite veins that vary in width from narrow stringers to mineralized zones 40 to 50 ft. wide. Wall rocks consist largely of diorites, with some andesite, and a fragmental breccia called locally the "Balatoc plug." Texture of the ore varies widely in the different veins-from a soft, highly altered, gouge material filled with quartz fragments through a soft, unaltered quartz-calcite to a hard, massive quartz ore. Three major vein systems have been extensively developed, and smaller amounts of work have been done on several others. These veins strike east-west to N. 60°, dipping south from 50° to 90°, and are essentially tension breaks between a series of faults or shears striking N. 30°E. to N. 50°E. and dipping southeast from 50°to 90°. USE of gold leaf goes back to biblical and even to prehistoric times. Both gold and silver, as well as other metals, were employed in illustrating or illuminating manuscripts. The medieval monks also used bronze powders. Metals were subdivided as finely as possible by mechanical methods, or by granulation and then were pounded into finely divided flakes. Substances such as honey have also been employed, since early times to keep the flakes of metal apart during grinding. Stearic acid is a more modern agent used in flaking aluminum and other metals. Finely divided "blue powder" is a by-product in retorting zinc ores, and contains from 78 to 90 per cent of zinc metal. This has been used as a precipitant for precious metals in the cyanide process and for chemical reduction processes. The making of zinc dust by atomizing is a step well known in electrolytic zinc plants. The Thermit process of Goldschmidt also requires the use of finely divided aluminum.

IN the course of the development of the phase equilibrium diagram for the system Zr-Cr,' the structure of an as-cast allov having the composition ZrCr2 was analyzed and established to be isomorphous with MgZn2 (C14, hexagonal lattice, 12 atoms per unit cell). In a recent paper on the same system, Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' report for the ZrCr2 phase an isomorphy with MgCu2 (C15, cubic lattice, 24 atoms per unit cell). It appeared that this conflict might be resolved by assuming a high and low temperature modification for ZrCr2. That this was the case with the phase TiCr2 has recently been demonstrated by Levinger." Specimens of ZrCr2 annealed at 1200°, 1100°, 994", 900°, 834", 800°, and 700°C, respectively, and subsequently quenched were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis. It was successfully demonstrated that a transition from the MgZn, structure at lower temperatures to the MgCu, structure did occur at some temperature between 900" and 994°C. Table I lists the observed structures at the various annealing temperatures. In Table II, a summary of line spacings and intensities is given for each of the allotropic modifications. The first six lines of the MgCu2 structures have been located in the table to illustrate the close similarity between the patterns. Lattice parameters of the two modifications were calculated by a least squares solution of equations for interplanar spacings for a series of high angle lines. The results are as follows: MgZn2 type - c = 8.262 kX, A = 5.079 kX. MgCu2 type — a = 7.195 kX. It is interesting to note that TiCr2 behaves in reverse fashion yn that the MgCu, structure is the low temperature modification and the MgZn2 structure is the high temperature modification. THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the equilibrium diagram of the lithium-magnesium pair as a first step in studying the possible usefulness of these alloys as ultra-light structural materials. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE The behavior of lithium towards magnesium was first investigated by Masing and Tammann.(I)? In order to prevent oxidation the alloys were made in iron tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen; temperatures were measured with a glass-protected thermocouple. These investigators found that lithium and magnesium form two series of solid solutions separated by a miscibility gap between 85 and 95 per cent magnesium; that the alloys with 81 and 95 per cent magnesium showed a homogeneous structure under microscopic examination, while the alloy with 89 per cent magnesium contained two distinguishable crystallites; that the curve indicating the beginning of crystallization rises from the melting point of lithium to that of magnesium; and that no compounds of lithium and magnesium are formed. The equilibrium diagram was not plotted because no definite data were obtained for determining the solidus and the posi-tion of the miscibility gap in the solid state. The difficulties encountered in this investigation were: (1) that it was necessary to heat them as high as the melting point of magnesium in order to obtain homogeneous melts; at such temperatures the alloys attacked the glass protecting the thermo-couple; and (2) that at temperatures above 400° C. the lithium united

DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone, quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide, The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over-burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and trans-ported to the dump in quarry cars, Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi-circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft, above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river: As quarrying pro-gressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp,, 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft, above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting hays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage.

THE structural relations existing between cuprous oxide and copper were first systematically studied by Heyn1, who suggested that a study of the microstructure of refined copper might be substituted for the analytical methods in vogue for determining the oxygen content of copper coming .;from the refining furnace. Hofman, Green and Yerxa,2 in their paper A Laboratory Study of the Stages in the Refining of Copper, working along the lines suggested by Heyn, showed that a study off the microstructure could be made to yield a correct estimate of the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination. In order to determine the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination a photomicrograph was first made. From the relative areas of copper and eutectic, the percentage of cuprous oxide and the corresponding percentage of oxygen were then readily calculated. It was found that the values for oxygen thus obtained corresponded closely with the analytical results. With the idea of utilizing, this method of determining the oxygen content of each charge dipped from the refining furnaces at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant, the physical testing laboratory was equipped with suitable apparatus for carrying out the work. It may be of interest to describe certain of the methods which have been worked out in, this connection and give such data as have been obtained bearing on the effect of the oxygen content of refined copper upon its conductivity.

Beginning with theoretical concepts of oil drainage, this paper demonstrates that the flow of petroleum into a well from a stratum of oil-saturated sand of uniform texture increases with the diameter of the well. This conclusion is supported by experimental evidence. It appears that if a well may be reamed to a diameter of 20 ft. within the oil sand, its production will be approximately doubled. A novel method is proposed for forming and supporting a cavity of such proportions within the oil-producing stratum. PETROLEUM occurs, in nature, as a fluid saturating the pore spaces between the grains of porous rocks or aggregations of rock particles such as sand, sandstone, conglomerate, shale, limestone, etc. The oil, under the influence of gas pressure, hydrostatic pressure, gravity, earth pressure, and, perhaps, other natural forces, is caused to flow through the porous "reservoir rock" into wells penetrating the stratum in which the oil occurs. The principal moving force is the pressure of dissolved or occluded natural gas within the oil, though this;, force is assisted by gravity and by the hydrostatic or buoyant pressure of ground water about the edges of the "pool." The wells, providing outlets to the surface, are centers of reduced pressure and the flow of rock fluids into a particular well is usually an expression of the difference in pressure existing between the space within the well and that of the stored oil .within the reservoir rock. The greater this differential pressure, the more rapidly will oil flow from the source rock into the well. Opposing movement of the oil from the reservoir rock into the well are certain natural forces related to the rock structure, such as pore friction and capillarity, and certain others related to the physical properties of the oil, such as viscosity and adhesion. The differential pressure between the well and the boundaries of the area drained by it must be sufficient to overcome the forces opposing flow if there is to be movement of oil into the well. If by any device the resistance to movement of the oil may be reduced, the oil will flow into the well at a more rapid rate and the effective area of drainage will be increased.

The mining industry is continually faced with problems involving dewatering, pollution, water supply, leaching and hydrochemical mining and prospecting. Greater application of the principles of ground-water hydrology to solution of these problems promises improved operating efficiency, increased safety and better public relations. Estimating the magnitude of dewatering for a proposed mine may be a major factor in determining the feasibility of proceeding with mine development. Diverting the source of ground water to an abandoned mine may save costly treatment of acid-mine drainage. Development of a large ground-water supply near an ore deposit may enhance the possibilities of a leaching operation. Detection of certain dissolved minerals in water from springs or wells may lead to hitherto unknown mineral deposits. Current efforts of industry, educational institutions and government are making these kind of events more commonplace. Dewatering of Mines The magnitude of dewatering problems was dramatized by a flooding that occurred last year in a gold mine in South Africa. During drilling operations at the West Driefortein mine, a major fracture was encountered from which large volumes of water issued necessitating evacuation of 1350 men from the mine. Dewatering required an increase in pumping of more than 80 million gpd. Models of ground-water systems are being used to test alternate plans for dewatering mines. Using the models in conjunction with computer optimization programs may lead to minimizing costs of operation. In addition to computer simulation of aquifers associated with phosphate deposits in North Carolina mentioned in last year's report, two USGS employees developed a model to estimate the amount of pumping required to dewater a mine site in Colorado.

S. E. MADDIGAN*—I think Mr. Yen should be complimented on doing a very excellent and a very comprehensive piece of work. I was particularly pleased to note the use of X rays in a somewhat less tedious technique than pole figures. In the past I think many workers have been diverted away from the use of X rays in such investigations because of the large amount of work involved in pole figures if one is dealing with a great number of specimens. The same thing, I think, applies to the determination of orientations by counting of twins which is also a very tedious procedure; as a result several papers which have otherwise been of excellent quality have depended upon etching techniques for determination of orientation. The present paper indicates that the results reported in those previous papers were correct, but I think the use of etching techniques alone is a rather shaky basis for setting up theories in the literature. W. M. BALDWIN, JR.*—This discussion will be a short note of correction and apology. In my discussion of Brick, Martin and Angier's paper I incorrectly reported the orientation of phosphorus deoxidized copper annealed at temperatures. When I learned that Mr. Yen was preparing the present paper I asked that he correct this previous error, which he most graciously consented to do. However, through my ambiguity the correction noted on p. 59 of Mr. Yen's paper is still not the proper one. For this I take full responsibility. The orientation which I observed in phosphorus deoxidized copper at high temperatures is the (112) [111] which agrees with the pole figure given in Fig 8a, on p. 65 of Mr. Yen's paper. Our observations were made on the basis of twin counts rather than X ray determinations and therefore serve as an independent confirmation of Mr. Yen's data. M. K. MANY of the studies of intermetallic compounds containing uranium were performed during the early 1940's under the aegis of the Manhattan Project. Subsequently, much of this work was declassified and published after 1949. In some instances this early work, completed with relatively impure materials, represents the only source of X-ray diffraction powder data available in the literature. In the case of the intermetallic compound U,Fe some discrepancies in the powder pattern exist in the literature. Since this compound has been prepared in this laboratory, it is believed that the publication of the indexed powder pattern would help clarify the conflict in the literature. In studies of the U-Fe system, Gordon and Kauf-mannl and Grogan and Clews2 independently reported the intermetallic compound U,Fe in 1950. The crystal structure was described by Baenziger, Rundle, Snow, and Wilson3 in 1950. It is isostructural with U,Mn, U,Ni, and U,Co and crystallizes in a body-centered tetragonal lattice. The lattice constants determined by Baenziger et al. are: giving an X-ray density = 17.7 g cm-3 for 4 mol per unit cell. The compound used in this study was prepared by melting a stoichiometric mixture of the constituent metals in an argon-arc furnace using a nonconsum-mable tungsten electrode. Before the argon of 99.98 pct purity was introduced into the furnace, it was passed through CaC1, to remove water vapor and afterwards through a stainless steel tube containing calcium turnings heated at 600°C for the removal of nitrogen and oxygen. INTRODUCTION In inclined sedimentary strata slope failure may occur by sliding along bedding and along a discontinuity or weak zone, as illustrated in Fig. 1. This mode of failure may be called 'bi-linear', as the failure surface is comprised of two linear or approximately linear segments. This type of failure has been suggested for the famous Frank Slide, Alberta, Canada (Cruder and Krahn, 1973) in which an estimated 90 M 5 tons (8.97 x 10 MN) of rock separated from Turtle Mountain and buried the town of Frank. Also, with the increasing depth of open pits and the construction of highways through inclined sedimentary strata this mode of failure is of major concern to the rock slope stability engineer. A computer program for calculating factors of safety for this slope failure mode is provided and includes the ability to vary shear strengths of potential slide surfaces, ground water elevations and wedge geometry. LIMITING EQUILIBRIUM MODEL The simple limiting equilibrium model used in the analysis is shown in Fig. 2. It is assumed that jointing is orthogonal to bed- ding and that the interface between the upper and lower wedges there- fore corresponds to a joint plane or planes. (communication to the Secretary*):-Referring to Leonard Waldo's paper on Temperature Conversion Tables, I believe the following formulas can be easily remembered, and by reference to the thermomter scales of Fahrenheit (F.), Celsius (C.), and Réaumur (R.), their derivation and relation are at once understood n° F. = 4/9 (n°-32) R. = (n°-32) C. n° C.=(9/5 n° + 32) F. = 4/5 n° R. n° R.=(9/4 n° + 32) F. = 5/4 n° C. As the freezing point of water is at 32° F., corresponding to 0° C. and 0° R., 32 must be deducted from the Fahrenheit degrees when these are converted into C. or R. degrees. Likewise, to C. or R. degrees converted into F. degrees 32 must be added. The fractions 4/9 and 5/9 and their reciprocals are obtained thus:

The Committee on Technical Nomenclature, of which John T. Faig, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, is Chairman, appointed by the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, has recently issued a report advocating uniformity in the use of symbols to designate engineering and mathematical terms: The selection of the symbols was based upon a canvas of a considerable number of engineers, editors of engineering papers, and professors of engineering throughout the United States.
