INTRODUCTION THE Darwin District is 30 miles east of Olancha which is 220 miles north from Los Angeles via U. S. Highway No. 6. The ore deposits occur in the Darwin hills that have been elevated above the Darwin Plateau by typical basin and range-type faults. Some of these faults have been active quite recently as shown by the displacement of Quaternary (?) basalt flows and the rejuvenation of erosion in Darwin wash. The ore bodies occur as fissure fillings and replacement of favorable beddings in a thick series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites. Rich oxidized lead-silver ores were discovered in the early seventies. By 1875, Darwin had a population of about 5000, and by 1880 several small mills and smelters had been built. Early exhaustion of surface ores, the isolated location of the district, and fluctuation of metal prices caused intermittent operations until World War II. The district production is estimated at about $3,000,000 prior to 1900 and perhaps $4,000,000 between 1900 and 1945 when Anaconda purchased the major producing mines. For the past two years, daily production has averaged 75 tons of direct shipping and 150 tons of milling-grade ore. At present, 300 tons of mixed oxide and sulphide ore are treated by flotation, the oxidized lead minerals being activated by addition of sodium sulphide after galena and sphalerite have been recovered from the circuit. Extraction averages 85 pct of the lead, 80 pct of the silver, and about 33 pct of the zinc in a bulk concentrate. The mill is designed so that minor changes permit selective flotation of pyritic lead-zinc ores encountered at depth. GENERAL GEOLOGY The oldest rocks in the Darwin hills are a series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites probably Pennsylvanian in age. These rocks have been intruded on the west by the Coso granite batholith and on the east by a granodiorite stock. Numerous sills and dikes grading from orthoclase granite to gabbro are exposed in the underground workings. The sedimentary rocks have been considerably folded and faulted, the most prominent structure being a northwest pitching anticlinal fold, the crest of which lies just west of the ridge line of the Darwin hills. The east limb of this fold has been intruded by the granodiorite stock and east of the stock the sediments show several closely spaced anticlines and synclines. The minor flexures on the west flank of the major fold are structurally important in localizing the ore in the Defiance and Essex mines of the Darwin group. There are three principal systems of faulting and fissuring, most of which are post-intrusive and premineral in age, with minor amounts of postmineral movement. The Darwin tear fault is the largest, most persistent fault in the district. It strikes N 60 to 95°W, dips steeply south and is traceable for about 1o miles. It is a normal

Some of the important changes that take place in the structure of aluminum alloys are largely submicroscopic in character. This is especially true of the changes that accompany age-hardening and recrystallization. Although improved metallographic practices have been helpful in indicating some of these changes indirectly, results are limited by the resolving power of optical microscope lenses. The electron microscope, however, provides a new and important means for investigating the fine structure of metals in a range not possible heretofore. It is anticipated that this microscope will yield new and useful information to metallurgists when suitable techniques are developed to utilize its very high resolving power. Several unique methods have been devised to permit the examination of the structure of opaque samples by the electron microscope. These are all based on the principle of producing a very thin film that represents the prepared surface of the opaque metal sample, which can be examined in the transmission microscope; however, the available methods fall into three categories, depending on the manner in which the film is obtained. With the oxide-film method developed by Mahl3-17 a very thin surface layer of the metallographic sample is converted into oxide by a thermal, chemical or anodic treatment. After removal from the metal sample by one of the special techniques described by Evans,19 this oxide film is examined in the electron microscope, and is found to portray the structure of the original metal surface. Films formed on aluminum,8,17 nickel,7 iron 3,8,9 and a nickel-beryllium alloy" by heating; films formed on iron 8.9 by chemical action; and films formed on aluminum3-16 by anodic oxidation, have been examined. The other two are more recent methods developed principally in this country; they consist in making the thin film in the form of a mold or replica of the surface contour of an etched sample. With the negative replica method the thin film is made directly on the sample; with the positive replica method it is made on a negative reproduction of the sample. With both methods, variations in the contour of the metal sample, caused mainly by etching, produce variations in the thickness of the surface replica. Because of the direct dependence of the amount of scattering of the illuminating electrons upon the thickness of the film penetrated, only the variations in thickness of the replica are responsible for tones in the electron image. Negative replicas are made by forming a thin film of some suitable material directly on the polished and etched metal sample, and derive their name from the fact that after removal from the sample they have the high and low points in the sample reversed, as shown in Fig. I. R. B. T. KILIANI, New York, N. Y.-I wish to present some figures based upon actual observation extending over a few months time which seem to prove the author's conclusions. It is a comparison of two machines operating on the same ore, in the same plant, one taking the undersize of ½ -in. screen and the other taking the undersize of 8-mesh. Each of the machines was first operated as a pebble mill, with flint pebbles, in open circuit, then with metal pebbles in open circuit and, finally with metal pebbles in closed circuit. For the first case, the percentage of oversize on 48-mesh, Tyler screen, in the discharge, varied, in the mill taking ½ -in- feed, from 37.2 to 19.9 per cent. The second mill, taking the 8-mesh feed, had a variation in oversize on 48-mesh, from 36.8 per cent: to 0.5 per cent.; so it is seen there is considerable variation in these figures. I have computed the tons per kilowatt-day reduced through 48-mesh for each machine under each one of these conditions, giving 6 sets of figures. The first of these I called 1.0 and determined the ratio of the others to this.. In the snipe way, I figured the relative mechanical efficiency according to Kick's law, using' the figures given by Mr. Taggart in his paper, for ordinal numbers of the Tyler screens. I have also figured the efficiency in mesh-tons per horsepower according to Gates' method by plotting the screen analyses of feed and product and multiplying the area by a constant dependent on the scale used. The commercial efficiency of tons per kilowatt-day reduced through 48-mesh checks very closely with the efficiency by Rittinger's law, within 1 per cent. except in one case. By Kick's law, the efficiency checks fairly closely, within about 5 per cent., with the commercial efficiency of the mill grinding feed, but when we start to grind a finer, 8-mesh material, and especially grinding very fine; with a

Results of the application of geologic knowledge to grade control have been remarkable. Grade reduction from dilution has been diminished from greater than 9% at the time of the program's beginning to about 2% at present. This has resulted in an increase of about 1.8 lb of copper per ton of ore mined and has made a substantial contribution to earnings at White Pine during the past two years. Even more improvement is expected in the future. The White Pine orebody, situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw peninsula of upper Michigan, is a gently dipping stratiform or bedded deposit. Copper distribution is stratigraphically controlled with higher values being confined to specific beds in the ore column. Room-and-pillar mining is practiced. Mining technique and geologic characteristics present a special array of problems in controlling the grade of ore.

THE Tri-State district, named from its situation in three States, lies in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the adjacent part of Missouri east of the common corner of the above States. Production in the past eighty years has come from scattered mines within an area of some 35 miles east and west, by 25 miles north and south, although the actual area of the mined ground is but a small fraction of this territory. The land is leased from the individual land-owners, and the size of the tracts varies from 4.0 to 200 acres, the smaller sized tracts predominating. The leases usually call for a royalty of 7% to 15 per cent of the gross receipts of the concentrates, continuous operation during the life of the lease and specifically set out that no ores can be brought in from a foreign lease for custom milling nor can any ore be removed from the lease for milling. The ownership of the tailings remains with the land-owner.

Discussion of the paper of EDGAR L. NEWHOUSE, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin: No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1801 to. 1806. G. C. RIDDELL, East Helena, Mont.-As nearly as I can recall at the present moment, there are only four or five large plants on the continent where the lead on charge is carried in the neighborhood of 40 per cent. These are at Herculaneum, Collinsville, and Federal, Ill.; Trail, B.. C.; and East Helena, Mont. Our object at the latter point is to smelt a maximum amount of Coeur d'Alêne lead sulphides in as compact and self-fluxing a charge as possible, and to this end we are now smelting a mixture that at times carries up to 42 per cent. lead. The monotony of producing the 7,000 tons of bullion shipped each month to. the Omaha and Chicago refineries is relieved somewhat by the fact that the 15,000 tons monthly of Coeur d'Alêne ores that are com-ing to us carry enough zinc to provide the one-half slag used with from 6.5 to 7.5 per cent. zinc clay after day. During the month of March, 1914, three lead furnaces in continous operation, each 136 in. long, averaged 249 tons per furnace clay, exclusive of coke and slag shells, which is smelting at the rate of 5.5 tons per square foot of tuyère area. The dihedral angle, formed by the intersection of three interfaces, is often determined by measuring a sample of apparent angles of intersection seen on a random plane of polish, then comparing the exerimental distribution of angles to the distribution calculated by Harker and Parker. Statistical tests show that the latter distribution does not satisfactorily describe the population from which samples are drawn. It is concluded that the major reason for this discrepancy is the presence of a range of dihedral angles in all specimens. When reasonable care is used experimentally, random measuring error is unimportant. It is shown that measurements made on dispersed second-phase inclusions are subject to a systematic error depending on inclusion size, which can be minimized by using adequate magnification. A dihedral angle, calculated from a sample of observed angles as though a unique dihedral angle were present, is termed an "effective dihedral angle". Experience has shown that "effective dihedral angles'' are reproducible quantities, useful for characterizing samples. Methods of determining an "effective dihedral angle", establishing its reliability, and making comparisons between samples are discussed. THE authors have recently reported measurements of the dihedral angle formed by liquid-lead inclusions lying in nickel grain boundaries.' Di- hedral angles were measured by the statistical method first employed by Harker and parker2 and used subsequently by many other workers.3"8 Since a relatively high degree of accuracy was necessary in the authors' experiments, the reliability of this method of dihedral-angle measurement was examined. Briefly, this method of measuring dihedral angles is usually performed as follows. A multiphase alloy is prepared, equilibrated under conditions which allow sufficient interface mobility to establish equilibrium, quenched to room temperature, then prepared for metallographic examination. A large number of observed angles, formed by the traces of grain boundaries and/or interphase boundaries on the plane of polish, are measured at high magnification. If all orientations of interfaces in the specimen are equally probable, Harker and parker2 showed that the population of observed angles is described by a distribution function containing a single parameter, the dihedral angle, 8. certain properties of the population, e.g., the mode or median, have been calculated from this distribution function in terms of the dihedral angle.3, 9 Thus, if the mode or median of a sample is identified with the corresponding property of the population, a unique value for the dihedral angle is determined. One defect in this procedure lies in identifying the properties of a sample of observed angles with the properties of the population from which they are drawn. If one were to proceed in a more rigorous fashion, it would be necessary to find a function of sample properties which is an estimator of the dihedral angle. Then by determining the distribution function for the estimator one could set limits on the value of the dihedral angle. The most apparent obstacle to this straightforward approach is the complexity of the distribution function assumed to describe the population. Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early 1930s in the so-called Hadsel mills (Hardinge, 1955) as seen in [Fig. 1], mainly used in gold mines on the US West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 6.1 to 7.3 m (20 to 24 ft) in diameter and 1.5 to 1.8 m (5 to 6 ft) in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill, the Aerofall dry grinding mill, and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semiautogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by G. J. Kushner of Koppers Metal Processing Division. In the size range of 7.3 to 9.8 m (24 to 32 ft) in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 11.1-m-diam X 4.6-m-long (36-ft-diam X 15-ft-long) mills in Minnesota, powered by 8950 kW (12,000 hp) motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above 150 mills was in operation prior to 1964. Grinding rates in autogenous mills are very sensitive to variations in ore breakage characteristics and even with fairly constant ore type can exhibit large fluctuations in throughput. Autogenous grinding also depends on availability of a fraction of the ore to be ground in the form of "competent" rock which can withstand to a certain degree the tumbling and impact action within the mill. If the ore is uniformly "soft", it will soon be crushed into small size particles and further grinding, which depends on the existence of large size rocks in the mill, becomes impossible. This apparently is the case with most copper ores, as discussed by Bachman, Last and Nabbs (1970) who described pilot testing of a large number of ore samples from Kennecott 's Chino Mines. Under circumstances where autogenous grinding is impractical, it is possible to realize most of its benefits by utilizing large grinding balls in place of the "competent" rock and practice what has become known in the mining industry as semiautogenous grinding. In semiautogenous grinding (SAG), a grate discharge tumbling mill is fed the product of a primary crusher or run-of-mine rock. Forged steel or alloy grinding balls, in proportions ranging from 3.10% of the total volume in the mill, are used to complement the self-grinding ability of the ore. Semiautogenous circuits can be either designed for single-stage closed-circuit grinding which produces a final product for recovery processes, or for two-stage operation in which the SAG mill product is fed to a second stage of grinding in a conventional ball mill.

MY FIRST paper dealing with the theories of the hardening of steel by rapid cooling was published in the Transactions of this Institute in 1896-30 years ago-under the title "The Microstructure of Steel and the Current Theories of Hardening;" hence, also, the title of the present paper. It was extensively discussed and was, I believe, one of the starting points of many subsequent papers and discussions of the same subject, discusssions which at times became almost violent and which led to the formation of different schools such as the "Carbonists" and the "Allotropists." Some of the older members of the Institute, who took part in the debate or who were interested observers, will, I am sure, have kept a vivid remembrance of it. The controversy gradually quieted down, apparently for lack of ammunition, without any side acknowledging defeat. Recently, however, interest in it has been revived through the claims of some that these vexed questions had at last been solved. In an effort to ascertain if possible the prevailing view of those best qualified to express an opinion a questionnaire was submitted to the following gentlemen: J. 0. INTRODUCTION The block-caving mining method is one of the most economical ways existing today to extract ore from nature. It is undoubtedly the least costly of the underground systems and moreover it compares favorably to open-pit mining. In addition to its low cost characteristic, the block-caving mining method permits a great extraction volume as can be exemplified by El Teniente's output capacity of over 22 million tons of ore per year. These characteristics of block-caving give assurance that, even though it is a very old mining system, it will be a good answer to the many future large massive low ore grade deposits to come and a1 so to rep1 ace open-pi t mining as such operations get deeper with higher stripping ratios. These are the reasons that induce further study of block-caving. In this paper block-caving at El Teniente is analyzed with due consideration to the major problems that this mine will encounter. Emphasis is given to the factors influencing the mining of soft ore which accounts for most of the ore to be extracted in the next ten years. A separate paper is devoted to a major modification introduced to block-caving hard primary ore at El Teniente by means of LHD equipment extraction. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT MINING Ore Production and Flow Over 62.000 tons per day of ore are extracted 359 days per year at the El Teniente Mine. The Teniente 8 train haulage level at 1.983 m takes 29.000 tons daily to the Col6n Concentrator. Two trains make the 8 km haul with 16 cars per train. Car capacity is 90 tons. The Teniente 5 train haulage level 298 m above takes 33.000 t per day to the old Sewell Concentrator. Ore is produced from three production areas in two different levels. The so called North Mine produces 42.000 tons daily from the Teniente 4 level 65 m above the Teniente 5 haulage level. The Central Mine produces 1.000 tons from the first hard rock block caved at the Te- niente 4 level. The combined 43.000 tons per day production is sent through inclined 2 m dia- meter raises to the Teniente 5 haul age level , where 33.000 tons are taken 2.5 km to the Sewell Concentrator and 9.000 tons are hauled 0.5 km to a 5 m diameter vertical ore pass which sends ore to Teniente 8. The haulage is by 7 trains, 15 gabble-bottom cars per train. Car capacity is 20 tons. The so called South Mine produces 19.000 tons per day from the Teniente 1 level 645 m above the Teniente 8 haulage level. Ore is transferred by 2 m diameter inclined raises to the Ten 1 Retram level 22 m below, where 5 trains with 20 Sandfor Day cars per train, 8 tons capacity per car, haul the ore 1.5 km to two vertical 5 m diameter ore passes which connect to Ten 8. Starting in 1982 the Central Mine will in- crease production to 6.000 tons per day. An in- dependent loop haulage system will start operat- ing at the Teniente 5 level to feed a new under- ground 1.372 mm (54 in.) gyratory crusher which will send minus 152 mm ore (9 in.) to Teniente 8. In two or three years time the North Mine will only feed the 33.000 tons to the Sewel 1 Concentrator with its old Teniente 5 haulage system. The Col6n Concentrator will be fed from the Central and South Mines. Figure 1 shows the transfer systems and ore flows. The Ore Body In plan view at the Teniente 4 level the ore body has a kidney shape 1.800 m long and between 400 to 700 m wide. The north-eastern section of the ore body was washed away by the Teniente River. At the Sub 5 Level, 125 m below Teniente 4, the mineralization completely surrounds the circular 1.000 m diameter steep-sided barren breccia pipe (Braden pipe) . The ore body rock is 73% andesite, 14% diori te, 13% dacite and 6% mineralized breccia. Most of this ore is secondary enrichment sulfides which apart from the dacite is strongly fractured being chal cocite, cove1ine , bornite and

George E. Collins, Nacoochee, Ga. (communication to the Secretary): The results tabulated below were obtained at the Reynolds mill, White county, Ga. They were noted, not with a view to investigating the point discussed by Mr. Clark, but in course of a test on a working scale to determine the com parative saving from a given free-milling ore on copper and silvered plates respectively. In every case the bullion assayed was the result of a separate clean-up on a considerable quantity of ore. The ore varied widely in grade and in other respects, but the runs bracketed in the table were made at the same time, in adjoining batteries, and on similar types of ore. In a * Result modified by the addition to the bullion-shipment of a little impure bullion left over from previous clean-ups.. On these occasions, the strips of copper were removed from the tables, and: their lower surfaces were cleaned. Hence the higher yield reported.

THE-Institute of Metals Division opened on Tuesday afternoon with Wheeler P. Davey as chairman and G. E. Edmunds as vice-chairman. Four papers were on the program, two being of a fundamental character. A paper on "Internal Surface in Minerals and Metals," by R. S. Dean and J. Roster, was presented by the latter; C. H. Gottschalk discussed coercive forces in powders. In answer to a question by the chairman. The author stated that he had not investigated [he temperature coefficient of resistance. A paper on "Recrystallization and Grain Growth in Cold Worked Polycrystalline Metals," by L. W. Eastwood, Arthur E. Bousu, 'and C. T. Eddy, was presented by Mr. Eastwood. A. great many quantitative data were given, with little reference to the theory. Theoretical considerations were discussed by Dr. Gottschalk, and C. A. Edwards of the University College of Wales, contributed very interesting comment on the relationship of size and critical strain. Dr. Edwards discussed the necessity of considering strain with time and temperature.

THIS preliminary report from the Committee to Study Relations Between Students and the Institute is submitted to our member- ship for consideration and discussion before the general subject comes up for action at the Annual Meeting in February. At present, the A. I. M. E. has a dual relationship with mining students, each relationship in no may connected with the other. To the individual student the Institute offers for $2 a year a Student Associateship in the Institute which carries with it a subscription to MINING AND METAL- 'LURGY, a watch fob, and the privilege of becoming a Junior Member after graduation without payment of the -first year's dues, if one's application is accepted. To the student's college society it offers the privilege, upon application, of becoming 'an Affiliated 'Society, which brings with it no specific supervision or aid, and in turn requires no specific conditions as to membership, fees, or rules. This Affiliated Society is distinctly a school organization which Student Associateship in the Institute can he given special status or ignored, is the local .society sees fit.

FOR the first time other than on occasion of war the people of the United States are experiencing full-scale participation in world affairs. Public concern has seldom been so involved with conditions and events beyond our own continental limits. Our interest is not wholly of recent origin. Over the years the activity of the United States as a world power and an important trading nation brought about the widening of our political interests and the progressive interrelation of our economy with that of the rest of the world. Some may see in our present phase of world-wide activity the natural consequence of our continued growth. Such observers must also be aware that within recent years our importance in world affairs has been considerably increased. For within the space of an extremely short period events have occurred that have literally jet-propelled the United States into the role of a leading participant in the conduct of world affairs. Little of the choice of this role was left to us. The decline of power in western Europe, the ascendancy between the Elbe and the Pacific shore of an obviously antagonistic force, our earnest endeavor to secure international control of atomic energy, the necessity of providing relief and rehabilitation to war-ravaged areas, and the police work that must be done in occupied territories are problems which have risen in great measure without our help-but they cannot be solved without it.

An analysis is presented to show that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals can be rationalized in terms of flow mechanisms operative during the rolling process. First, a general approach used by Calnan is followed, where the rolling process is approximated on the basis of two axes, p and Q. In this treatement there are two separate sets of slip systems, one for each axis, and it is shown that a homogeneous rotation can he achieved by restricting the slip systems for the two axes to share common slip directions Then, two criteria are used to select the active slip systems for the axis P: they must have relatively high resoloed shear stresses, and dislocations on these slip systems must interact attractively in order to lower total energy content Finally, a method of analysis is introduced to locate the end position of an axis by knowing its acti7.e slip systems. The result of the analysis indi- cates that two main flow mechanisms operate in fcc metals. The ideal orientation derived from one oj-them is (8 13 21) (21 8 13) which is very close to the (358) (523) orientation observed experimentally on the rolling texture of copper. This flow mechanism should only he operative in metals containing dislocations extended into partials separated by less than five times their lattice parameter. The ideal orientations derived from the other flow mechanism are a combination of (1 10} (112) and a spread of orientations with (110) parallel to the rolling plane. This type of ideal orientations corresponds to those observed in the rolling texture of silver 30:70 brass, and binary alloys with high alloying content. This flow mechanism should be operative in any fcc metal regardless of its stacking-fauIt energy. IN MOST diamond core drilling the primary objective is the recovery of samples to be used for chemical analysis, physical tests, or visual inspection. Unless these samples are reliable and the information systematically recorded, the time and money spent in securing them are largely wasted. A properly taken diamond-drill sample is similar to a properly moiled channel sample but more accurate. No channel sample can be moiled in as even a groove as the smooth cylinder of material normally removed in diamond drilling. More important still, sampling by the diamond drill practically eliminates that personal equation which Jora1emon4 reference numbers apply to publications listed in the bibliography at the end of this article) has aptly termed "the almost magnetic attraction of the most conscientious hand toward rich pieces of ore."

RETURNS already received from a current survey of the enrolment of students in the mineral technology schools indicate a degree of activity and prosperity in those schools never before equalled. The returns are as yet too meager for accurate analysis, but those at hand point LO considerable increase in the metallurgical and petroleum engineering groups, and indicate that the total of 5011 two years ago in the United States schools will be substantially increased. Generally speaking, the enrolment is not only maximum in quantity but optimum in quality. Better income has sent the boys back to school, but the improved employment conditions have somewhat reduced the number of graduate students. Laboratories are commonly filled to capacity, in some instances overcrowded. Increased enrolment of foreign students from both Canada and South America is noticeable.
