I DESIRE to make it perfectly clear at the outset that I fully realize the hazardous nature of any attempt to estimate the quantity of iron-ore or any other mineral in the ground. I should not have had the temerity to venture upon an inventory of the iron-ore supplies of the United States except for the requirements of the Conservation Commission. During the preparation of this inventory I have been impressed by the wide diversity in estimates of those best qualified to. hold an opinion, and I am therefore prepared in advance for criticism of my figures. Inasmuch as this report was prepared in large part for unprofessional readers, I considered it necessary to classify and describe the commercial iron-ores in a somewhat elementary manner, in order to explain the reasons for the large element of uncertainty in the estimates. I have therefore given a chemical and a geological classification of iron-ores, which place the commercial deposits in six classes: (1) magmatic segregations in basic igneous rocks; (2) contact-deposits formed in connection with igneous intrusions; (3) concentration-deposits; (4) replacement-deposits; (5) bedded-deposits, and (6) gossan-deposits. The iron-ores are further distinguished under two classes available and not available. This classification is in large measure arbitrary, and it, is evident that it will vary front time to time. In the available class are placed those ores which can be worked at a profit under conditions essentially as they exist at present. Since it depends wholly on the question of costs, the various factors which affect cost will determine the classification of any particular deposit. IN THE early summer of 1917, it became evident that the then existing sources of supply of guns and gun forgings were totally inadequate for the enormous and rapidly growing requirements of the Ordnance Department of the Army, so arrangements were made with sixteen makers of other products to take up the manufacture of guns and gun forgings. Nine of these makers were required to produce their own steel from the raw materials and convert it into rough machined gun forgings; the others finished and assembled these forgings into completed guns. In December, 1914, four of these makers of steel and rough gun forgings were instructed to manufacture the same amount of the 6-in. and 9.5-in. guns and howitzers. It, therefore, seemed practical .and profitable to assemble these makers into a small group, together with the officers of the Ordnance Department, and provide standard 'equipment in each of the four works for the production of these two types of guns. The advantages of this cooperation were immediately manifested, and there commenced an interchange of shop practice and a free discussion of facilities and methods that covered not only the equipment but the manufacturing processes.

During the year 1945, the total number of wells drilled in Ohio, including the. non¬productive wells, was 1034. For the 10-year period ending with 1945, the average completions per year were 1125, the least number being 910 in 1938, and the maximum 1561 in 1941. The proportion of dry holes in 1945 was 37 per cent?about the same as for the year 1944 but exceeding the 10-year average, which was 34 per cent. The number of oil wells completed exceeded the number drilled in 1944 by about 30 per cent, the average initial per well being the same in both years. Gas-well completions were approximately 10 per Cent less than in 1944, with the average initial per well about 5 per cent greater. The difference in number of oil and gas wells in the two years was in Berea and Clinton completions, as the number of oil wells increased about 30 per cent, owing to greater activity in the two sands named, while the number of gas wells decreased because of fewer completions therein.

MILLING is one of the metallurgical arts whereby the extraction of the largest possible proportion of the value in an ore is effected at the least possible expense. Stamp-milling* is that particular process in which a heavy body of iron is caused to fall upon the ore so as to disintegrate it and thereby induce a separation between what is valuable and what is worthless. The latter is usually less in specific gravity, and is therefore, by the further aid of water, removed from the former, which is then collected by the use of mercury. Several similes have been employed to describe this process. The stamp has been likened to a hammer of which the stem is the handle and the die the anvil. The ore upon which the stamp falls has been compared to a nut awaiting the descent of the hammer whose blow is to separate the valueless shell, the quartz, from the valuable kernel, the gold. When we begin to pursue our inquiries, however, we find that the analogy is just sufficiently true to emphasize the departures from it. The hammer falls, the anvil is fixed; so with the stamps and the mortar. The anvil is made of softer metal than the hammer; so also the die is often, and should be always, of steel or iron less hard and more tough than that of the shoe. The movement of the hammer and the drop of the stamp are both intermittent. In regard to their intermittent action, as in many other respects, stamp-mills arrange themselves under two types, which, though apparently contradictory, have both been evolved from a common original, and are united by a great variety of intermediate modifications. The slow speed and the high drop of the mills of Gilpin county Colorado, appear to have very little in common with the fast speed and short drop of those of the main gold belt of California; yet the practice of the one was largely derived from that of the other,

Introduction The Darwin District is 30 miles east of Olancha which is 220 miles north from Los z4ngeles via U. S. Highway No. 6. The ore deposits occur in the Darwin hills that have been elevated above the Darwin plateau by typical basin and range-type faults. Some of these faults have been active quite recently as shown by the displacemerit of Quaternary (?) basalt flows and the rejuvenation of erosion in Darwin wash. The ore bodies occur as fissure fillings and replacement of favorable beddings in a thick series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites. Rich oxidized lead-silver ores were dis'Overed in the early seventies. BY 1875, Darwin had a population Of about 5000, and by 1880 several small mills and smelters had been built. Early exhaustion of surface ores, the isolated location of the district, and fluctuation Of metal prices caused intermittent operations until World War 11. The district production is estimated at about $3,000,000 prior to 1900 and perhaps $4,000,000 between 1900 and 1945 when Anaconda purchased the major producing mines. 'or the Past two Years, daily production has averaged 75 tons of direct shipping and 150 tons of milling-grade ore. At present, 300 tons of mixed oxide and sulphide ore are treated by flotation, the oxidized lead minerals being activated by addition of sodium sulphide after galena and sphalerite have been recovered from the circuit. Extraction averages 85 pct of the lead, 80 pct of the silver, and about 33 Pct Of the zinc in a bulk concentrate. The mill is designed so that minor changes permit selective flotation of pyritic lead-zinc ores encountered at depth. General Geology The oldest rocks in the Darwin hills are a series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites probably pennsyl-vanian in age. These rocks have been intruded on the Rest by the Coso granite batholith and on the east by a granodiorite stock. Numerous sills and dikes grading from orthoclase granite to gabbro are exposed in the underground workings. The sedimentary rocks have been considerably folded and faulted, the most prominent structure being a northwest pitching anticlinal fold, the crest of which lies just west of the ridge line of the Darwin hills, The east limb of this fold has been intruded by the granodiorite stock and east of the stock the sediments show several closely spaced anticlines and synclines. The minor flexures on the west flank of the major fold are structurally important in localizing the ore in the Defiance and Essex mines of the Darwin group. There are three principal systems of faulting and fissuring, most of which are post-intrusive and premineral in age, with minor amounts of postmineral movement. The Darwin tear fault is the largest, most persistent fault in the district. It strikes N 60 to 75°W, dips steeply south and is traceable for about 10 miles. It is a normal

THE Fall Meetings of the Institute of Metals Division and of the Iron and Steel Division were held in Cleveland from Tuesday, Oct. 20, to Thursday, Oct. 22, as a part of the National Metal Congress. The registration at the technical sessions was something over 450 and the attendance at the joint dinner of the two Divisions on Wednesday evening taxed the capacity of the dining room. The president of the British Institute of Metals, W. R. Barclay, consulting metallurgist to the Mond Nickel Co., Ltd.; of London, was in attendance at several of the technical sessions and was one of the after-dinner speakers at the banquet. He commented on the desirability of greater international amity and cooperation in these troubled times and of the role that technical societies, such as the A. I. M. E. and his own British Institute of Metals, can and indeed are playing in bringing this to pass, with their membership and contacts reaching to all parts of the world. He also referred to the new reciprocal membership arrangements in effect between the A.I.M.E. and the British Institute of Metals.

Conventional laboratory core analysis tests on samples of two limestone reservoir rocks indicate that about 20 per cent of PV is in dead-end pores. These tests (electric logging formation factor, mercury injection capillary pressure and miscible displacement) were carried out on 1/4-in. diameter test plugs. Test results show a clear dilference between these samples and sandstone or homogeneous limestone reservoir rock. Although the amount of dead-end pore space can be only roughly estimated, the presence of such pore space seems clearly indicated. Pressure transient studies also show presence of deadend PV. Although they do not give quantitative results, pressure transient data yield a reasonable estimate of the size of the neck connecting dead-end pores to the main flow channels. INTRODUCTION Equations conventionally used to describe reservoir flow behavior contain the implicit assumption that all connected pore spaces contributed to both porosity and permeability. Several authors3-7 have pointed out the changes in pressure transient behavior and in electric log interpretation that may result if this assumption is incorrect and, instead, dead-end or cul-de-sac pores are present. There is a need for laboratory tests that can detect presence of dead-end pores in core samples. With such information on hand the petroleum engineer can make more rational use of the mathematical tools now available for analysis of reservoir flow behavior. This paper describes laboratory studies designed to detect and, if possible, give a quantitative measure of dead-end PV in laboratory-size core plugs. Three reservoir rocks were used, two of which were limestones suspected of having deadend pore spaces and a well-known sandstone, used as a comparison standard, in which there is believed to be little or no dead-end pore space. All the studies were designed to measure the natural dead-end PV; i.e., the pore space which is dead-ended because of rock structure. During multiphase flow in a rock without dead-end pores, some parts of one of the phases can become surrounded by the other, thereby giving (for certain flow behavior) an effective dead-end pV8,9. Such behavior will not be described here.

An aerial magnetometer survey was carried out by the author's geophysical organization over the Vredefort dome, where Witwatersrand beds are wrapped around a granite plug 25 to 30 miles in diameter. The well- known magnetic shales of the Lower Witwatersrand system (to be referred to as LWW) give strong negative anomalies over the out-cropping portion of the dome. This is unusual as these same shales -cause positive anomalies over large areas near Johannesburg and along a strike of 130 miles between the East Rand and Klerksdorp. It is suggested that the negative polarization is caused by heat and stresses connected with the doming. This negative polarization of sedimentary beds, which usually cause positive anomalies, is a good example of how "magnetic lows" can be caused by "structural highs." Significant magnetic anomalies should be tested by gravity and seismic methods irrespective of the sign of the anomalies.

Techniques for the epilaxial growth of single -crystal silicon carbide films on silicon were developed. The vapor-phase decomposition and bydrogen reduction of silicon tetrachloride (SiC14) and Propane (C3H8) resulted in clear films of silicon carbide, lip to seveval microns in thickness. The growth took place in a horizontal . silicon epilaxial reactor at 1100°C (pyrometer) at a rate of- 3000Å per minute. Electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction studies demonstrated that the films were single-cyrstal, ß -phase, or cubic silicon carbide. SiO2 film were used to mask areas of the silicon sur-lace in order that the silicon carbide might be grown in controlled geometries. Both n- and p-type films were grown on p-type silicon waters.. Heavily doped silicon films of the same conductivity type as the silicon carbide films were deposited over the silicon carbide in order to affect better probe contact to the structures. when n-type silicon carbide mesas were grown on p-type silicon substrates the de vollage-current relationships between films and substrates were that of junction diodes. These diodes showed a sensitivity to while light ill that the incident light increased forward- and reverse-satro,ation currents, P-type silicon carbide mesas grown on p-type silicon were ohmic rather than rectifying in their voltage -current relationship. No conclusions could he reached concerning heterojunc-tiou rectification in the structure. SILICON carbide is a semiconductor with many interesting properties. It decomposes at temperatures above 2200°C.1 It occurs in two general crys-tallographic forms—hexagonal (a Sic) and cubic (ß Sic)—with the cubic form having a forbidden-gap energy of 2.32 ev and the hexagonal form (specifically the 6H polytype) a gap energy of 2.86 ev.3 It behaves as an extrinsic semiconductor at temperatures approaching 5003C. It has been shown to have a high resistance to radiation damage4 and p-n junctions formed in Sic have been shown to radiate visible light under forward- or reverse-bias conditions. Epitaxial silicon carbide on silicon carbide has been successfully grown through the use of a variety of techniques, such as gaseous cracking of SiCL4 and CC4, nearly all of which require a deposition temperature above 1500°C.6 This paper will cover very recent work on the gas-phase deposition of highly ordered films of silicon carbide on high-quality silicon single-crystal substrates. The films have been shown to ex- hibit junction-rectification properties when geometrically isolated regions are electrically biased with reference to the silicon substrate. There will be no discussion of the mechanism of heterojunction rectification, but the methods of film fabrication, geometry control, and structural evaluations will be covered in detail. Electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and diode electrical properties were used to characterize the films and the junctions. GAS-PHASE DEPOSITION OF Sic The techniques for the deposition of silicon carbide films were a logical outgrowth of the standard silicon epitaxial process. The major premise followed was that, for any film to nucleate in an ordered fashion where there is considerable mismatch in lattice parameters (in this case 22 pct), an extremely clean, damage-free substrate surface must be presented to the gas stream. Thus a standard gas-phase HCl etching step was used to prepare the substrates for growth. A minimum of 5 µ of substrate-surface material was removed prior to the deposition of Sic overgrowth films. The techniques used for growing silicon carbide films were those of growing silicon alone, with the added injection of a hydrocarbon gas into the hydrogen and silicon tetrachloride gas stream. The hydrocarbon gases used thus far have been research-grade (99.99 pct) methane (CH4) and propane (C3H8). Propane ultimately gave the best results. The gas flows were controlled through a panel shown schematically in Fig. 1. A hydrogen main stream of 30 liters per min passed through the horizontal quartz-tube epitaxial reactor, while SiC14, C3H8, HC1, and doping gases were injected as side streams. The

THE ores of the Tonopah, district are hard, compact and' highly siliceous. They contain from .1 to 2, per cent. of sulfide material, of which argentite is the valuable mineral; occasionally pyrargyrite is found in the richer ore. The sulfide is, chiefly pyrite with small amounts of chalcopyrite,. and sometimes sphalerite. The ore also contains a small amount of gold-about 1 per cent. by weight of the silver present. The major gangue constituent is quartz but frequently considerable rhodonite-called by the miners pink manganese-is present. For primary crushing, jaw and gyratory crushers are used. These crushers are of such capacity that, in most cases, one 8-hr. shift will supply the mill for 24 hr. The Extension Co., at the Victor ore house, passes the ore through a 13 by. 24-in. Blake type McFarland crusher set at 13 in., and at the No. 29 re house, a 14 by 24-in. Blake type Traylor crusher is used. The ore is thus crushed to stamping size in one reduction. The capacity of each crusher is about 40 tons per hr.; the power consumption is 0.6 kw. per ton.

Exploratory drilling in South Central Texas for the year 1944 showed a marked increase over that of 1943 and resulted in a similar increase in new fields discovered. In this area, which comprises the 30 counties included in district No. I, Oil and Gas Division, Railroad Commission of Texas,? 61 exploratory wells were drilled during 1944 as compared with 29 exploratory wells drilled during 1943, or an increase of over 100 per cent. Three new oil fields, two new gas fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered during the year, as compared with one new oil field and one new gas field discovered during 1943. These new fields were the result of exploratory drilling throughout the district along the Wilcox trend and the deeper Edwards lime trend, which was started during the previous year. The Wilcox trend yielded the new Loma iilta-Wilcox oil field and the San Caja gas-* tlistillate field, both in McMullen County. The Charlotte field, in Atascosa County, was discovered along the deeper Edwards lime trend. These three discoveries were of considerable importance and subsequent development should indicate the desirability of continued exploration along these trends. The other three discoveries, United oil field in Guadalupe County, Pederson gas field in Milam County and Van Cleve gas field in Zavalla County, were of minor importance. Charlotte Field, Atascosa County, was discovered by the Humble Oil and Refining Company's No. 3 Pruitt, completcd on Aug. 9, 1944, flowing 176 bbl. per day, 3/16-in. choke, 710 lb. tubing, 475 lb. casing pressures, 37.7º A.P.I. gravity, from the top of the Edwards lime from 6917 to 6923 ft. Two oil wells were completed during the year in this field. This discovery is 14 miles southwest of the same company's Imogene field, also producing from the Edwards lime but with considerable difference in reservoir characteristics. The discovery of this field is the result of surface geology and subsequent seismograph survey of the area. Loma Alta-Wilcox Field, McMullen County, was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Company's No. I Atkinson, completed on June I, 1944, flowing 102 bbl. per day, 9/64-in. choke, 1900 lb. tubing pressure, 37º A.P.I. gravity, from Wilcox sand from 6866 to 6869 ft. after being drilled to a total depth of 7185 ft. This discovery is the result of subsurface geology and an extensive seismograph survey of the entire area. Sun Caja Field, McMullen County, was discovered by Edwin M. The process of cooling air by allowing it to expand and do work in an engine is well known, but the theory of obtaining cold air by free expansion without the aid of an engine operating with cutoff has been little discussed. In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. One approach towards increasing plant production capacity to meet the growing demand is through large-capacity flotation cells, provided they achieve metallurgical performance comparable to existing smaller cells. A 9-month evaluation test program recently completed at the Haynsworth mine at Bradley, Fla., demonstrated the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels using large, high-capacity flotation cells. The composition of the feed to the Haynsworth beneficiation plant is a typical Florida pebble phosphate matrix composed of phosphorite pebbles ranging in size from approximately 1-1/2 in. down to 150 mesh and intimately associated with a mixture of clay and sand (essentially silica). The feed contains approximately 22 to 28% phosphate reporting as tricalcium phosphate, Ca3 (PO,) 2, or "bone phosphate of lime" (BPL). The flotation section utilizes the double-float procedure typical of Florida plants. The phosphate is first floated away from the silica in the rougher circuit, using crude fatty acid, ammonia, and fuel oil or kerosene. Rougher conditioning is accomplished at 60 to 70% pulp solids with sufficient ammonia added to raise the pH to 9 to 9.5. Following coarse and fine rougher flotation, the concentrate (overflow) streams are joined and conditioned (sulfuric acid cleaned and washed) prior to entering the cleaner circuit where an amine float (cationic reagent and kerosene added in the feed box; pH 7.3 to 7.8) is employed to float the silica. The feed to the coarse rougher circuit averages 29% +35 mesh while the fine rougher feed averages 10%+35 mesh. Primary attention was directed toward the large rougher cell performance (recovery and grade) on coarse feed during the Haynsworth evaluation program. Flotation Cell Test Program A row of three No. 120 size (300 cu ft) WEMCO flotation cells was installed in parallel with an existing air-cell row. The total installed volume of the large cell circuit was 900 cu ft and required a floor space of 306 sq ft. This compared to the air-cell total volume of 200 cu ft and 152 sq ft floor space. (Both floor areas include feed and tails hoppers but exclude walkways.) Fig. 1 is a schematic cross section of the large flotation cell showing the relative location of key mechanism elements. In operation, the rotor generates a fluid vortex extending up along the walls of the standpipe and creating a sufficient vacuum within its core to ingest air into the standpipe/rotor cavity through the air inlet duct. The ingested air mixes with the pulp, which has been recirculated through the false bottom and draft tube, in the rotor. Further mixing occurs as the air and pulp move radially outward from the rotor, finally passing through the disperser into the flotation cell. Flotation is accomplished outside the disperser, where phosphorite laden air bubbles rise and the remaining pulp recirculates down along the cell wall to the false bottom and draft tube. Large-flotation-cell performance is influenced by the ability of the mechanism to (1) circulate, or suspend, the solids in the pulp; (2) ingest air into the rotor cavity; and (3) mix the air and pulp effectively. The proper balance between pulp circulation and air ingestion is a key consideration in achieving good recovery in a course feed application. Large-flotation-cell pulp circulation and air transfer characteristics are significantly influenced by rotor speed and rotor submergence; therefore, these two operational parameters can be used to "optimize" a particular mill application. Fig. 2 maps the hydraulic performance of the WEMCO No. 120 size flotation cell. This map can be used to relate the cell operational parameters which influence metallurgical performance. At a given rotor speed, power intensity (i.e., pulp circulation) is seen to increase, and airflow decrease, as rotor submergence is increased. The inverse relation between power and airflow is due to the two-phase air-liquid mixture density reduction accompanying the increased airflow rate. For any fixed rotor submergence, the power intensity (i.e., fluid circulation) and airflow both increase as rotor speed is increased. The selection of these two mutually related operating conditions (i.e., rotor speed and submergence) was a key consideration in the Haynsworth evaluation program.
