E. OROWAN*—I observed the phenomenon of jerky yielding many years ago with zinc25 and cadmium single crystals. A significant point was that the jerks occurred not only when the stress was raised but also (sometimes, after a pause of many minutes during which no trace of creep was observable) at constant stress. The phenomenon may be closely linked with the inertia of the testing machine and of the specimen, although the inertia alone cannot account for it. If, during the test, the resistance of the material to plastic deformation suddenly diminishes while the applied force remains constant, a sudden deformation follows until the yield stress has risen, by strain hardening, to the level of the applied stress (= the value of the previous "upper yield point."). When this is reached, the rate of deformation has attained a maximum value because, up to this moment, the applied force was higher than the plastic resistance of the specimen, and the difference was used for accelerating the moving parts of machine and specimen. The kinetic energy accumulated is now transformed into plastic work by further deformation; that is. the deformation overshoots the point at which the plastic resistance equals the applied static force. When the kinetic energy has been used up, therefore, we are left with a specimen the yield stress of which is higher than the applied stress, and no further deformation can occur (apart from a little creep) until either the applied stress has been raised to the new yield stress level, or the yield stress has fallen by thermal recovery to the level of the applied stress. While this occurs, a new upper yield point can develop, for example, by precipitation.26

The sums given in the accompanying table are those actually paid for material and labor up to about August, 1875; but, as some parts of the machinery were not wholly completed at the starting of the works in September, 1875, the statement cannot be taken as an absolutely correct note of the total cost. A complete description, with engravings of the building and machinery, was given in Engineering, April 26th, 1878, in a paper by Messrs. A. L. Holley and Lenox Smith, to which convenient reference may be made. A detailed list of the construction accounts has been given in a paper, by the present writer, in vol. vi, Transactions of the Institute. A summary is given in the table of the items in each class which enter into the total cost, and also a note of the proportion which each of these items forms of the whole. A concise view may thus he obtained of the facts embodied in the statement as a whole, even though it cannot lay claim to completeness in showing the entire or final cost. An urgent suggestion has reached the writer from a distant country that such statements of cost to be really most serviceable should give the details in days of labor, in weight of iron, and in number of brick, and to this an assent is most cordially yielded. It is true, however, that the mere labor of copying arid compiling these details to such a degree of minuteness, would be very great, and, in any event, the probable difference between the plans of an existing establishment and one projected, would be so wide as to render even so complete a statement of cost of little more real service than the approximate notes given herewith.

Oil-well depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. THERE is today no proven continuous mining machine that can be used under all the varying conditions found in most bituminous coal mines. During the last five years, however, both the machines and methods of using them have been improved. Coal operators can now exercise a fair degree of selectivity, except those who must struggle with thick and hard partings and operate in seams less than 40 in. thick. It must be realized, then, that more than one type of continuous miner may be used advantageously in the same coal mine. Although this appears to violate the standardization generally sought after, the gain can more than offset added maintenance and, to a lesser degree, operating problems.

THE first paper1 of this series described a technique of careful surface preparation by means of which reproducible results may be obtained from potential measurements of the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2. It then went on to establish the behavior of pure tin electrodes under these conditions and showed that the metal remains active at all times, though the steady potential attained after several hours decreases from I.I2[t] volts at a pH of 12.6 to 0.6 volts at a pH of 8.4. This behavior may serve as a norm with which all other data can be compared. In the second paper,2 small amounts of other anions were added to the carbonate solutions and the conclusion was reached that the common impurities encountered in alkaline materials packaged in tin do not increase corrosion. In fact, in some cases these anions may actually promote the formation of protective films. The present paper rounds out this survey by presenting data on the influence of cations added to the carbonate solutions, as well as the effect of alloy additions to the tin. In many cases the potential data are supplemented with weight-loss measurements. Information is also presented on the effects of some additional anions, the influence of gases above the electrolyte, the behavior of high-purity tin, and the effect of atmospheric oxidation on the corrosion resistance of the above-named alloys. Analysis of the entire body of data discloses some general rules applicable to corrosion in carbonate solutions. The experimental methods used are the same as those previously described. EXPERIMENTAL DATA Cations.-The carbonates of the cations K+, Li+, NH4+, which are soluble, were studied in the same way as the anions, by adding 0.01 mol of the metal carbonate to one liter of 0.2 M sodium carbonate solution, pH 11.2, or to 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate, pH 8.4. The other metallic carbonates are only slightly soluble, of the order of 0 7-3 mols per liter or less, and the sodium carbonate solutions were saturated by adding excess reagent several days before the experiment, shaking frequently, and filtering just before use. The chemicals were c.p. grade in each case except the indium salt. This salt was prepared by solution of the metal in hydrochloric acid and precipitation by addition of Na2CO3. These cations may be divided into two classes, according to their effect on the potential behavior of the tin: (I) normal, (2) passive. To offer a basis of comparison, curves I of Figs. THE high cost of coal in Butte and the development of large amounts of cheap electric power from the Missouri river caused the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in 1908 to make an investigation as to the possibility of adapting this cheap electric power for the operation of their many large hoisting plants. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. It is regretted that the data are not more complete; but the work was done simply incidentally to securing the desired ore for the blast-furnace, with no idea of obtaining any results of especial interest. It is submitted because of the metallic lead obtained, no notice of which has been seen elsewhere. The ore was an aggregate of several lots of concentrates, apparently from Missouri ores. The analysis follows, with that of the limestone and sandstone used, as far as made:. Ore, SiO2, 3.04; Fe, 0.77; CaO, 2.53; Pb, 68.74; Zn, 5.77; S, 13.9 per cent.; limestone, SiO2, 1.0 ; CaO, 54.35 per cent.; sandstone, SiO2, 99.8 per cent. The converter was made in the shops from a sheet of No. 14 iron riveted in the shape of a truncated cone, 20 in. in diameter at the top, 15 in. at the bottom and 22 in. high. THE liability for damages to the surface caused by subsidence is an ever present threat in all underground mining. In ordinary lode mining, this threat rarely materializes into an action, due to the method of mining metalliferous ores, the dip of the veins, and the nature of the ground itself. In the mining of coal, however, this threat is very real. The coal frequently lies close to the surface, in beds underlying large areas of land of which the surface is suitable for agricultural or urban development. Furthermore, the coal is generally mined by the "room and pillar " method and when the pillars of coal are removed, the subjacent support is destroyed. This question of the duty of surface support has now become a very live one in Colorado. What was waste prairie land a few years ago has become valuable agricultural land dotted here and there with growing towns. Frequent references will be made here to Colorado conditions and adjudicated cases, but those conditions and cases and the conclusions to be drawn therefrom are applicable to all coal-mining states. Briefly stated, the question is "Does the owner of the substrata or underlying mineral owe any duty of surface support to the owner of the superjacent strata or surface?" There is no absolute duty of support owed by the mineral owner and this assertion is made with full knowledge of numerous expressions to the contrary by courts of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and other coal-mining states. Whether or not any duty exists depends upon the circumstances surrounding each case, and since in the nature of things those circumstances are rarely identical, there can be no absolute rule.

The scale md subscale reaction products were identified and their rates of formation were studied in air over the range 1600" to 2000°F (871 " to 1149°C) for periods of up to 400 hr and for hoth the solution-annealed and aged conditions. The effect of prior sltrface preparation on suhscale oxidation was also studied The general oxidation behavior of both Ni-Cr-Mo-Al-Ti type alloys was similar. A surface film of a, Al2O3, forms immediately on exposure Subsequent oxidation continued at a linear rate (QL = 55 * 5 kcal per mole) as colonies of Cr2O3 nucleated at the A12O3/gas interface Further oxidation proceeded at a paraholic rate zvhiclz could he fitted to two successive rate constants. During paraholic oxidation, and depending on temperature, the scale consisted of Cr2O3, NiCr2O4 , and TiO2 with traces of NiO. In the case of Rene 41, the activation energy of both paraholic processes was 66 * 3 kcal per mole suggesting that diffusion of cations tlzrozrgh Cr2O3 was the rate -determining process. An unusual decrease in the oxidation of Udimet 700 at 1900°F where a spinel of Ni(A1,Crh0, zuas the predominant reaction product prevented the accurate assignment of activation energies for this composition. In both alloys internal oxidation of Al2O3 commenced shortly after parabolic scaling was observed. Prolonged exposure prod7tced intemal oxidation of TiN, and in Udimet 700 a complex Mo-Ni nitride was also found. At 1900oF, the subscale reactions in Udimet 700 undergo an inversion which parallels the decrease in surface oxidation; internal oxidation ceases hut is replaced by the formation of "spherodized" 3.' colonies. Surface-preparation techniqtles which introduce appreciable working, such as coarse surface grinding or grit blasting. increase the amount of alloy depletion and internal oxidation in Reni 41. The reverse is true of Udimet 700 for which electropolished or mechanically polished specimens show much more subscale oxidation than strongly worked stirfaces. The strongest commercial nickel-base alloys presently available are generic to the Ni-Cr-Mo-A1-Ti base which exploits the precipitation of Ni3(A1,Ti) as the main strengthening mechanism, while relying on solid-solution strengthening by molybdenum and chromium reinforced by the pre- cipitation of carbides to attain maximum properties. This study characterizes the oxidation behavior of Rene 41, the strongest alloy of the Ni-Cr-A1-Ti type commercially available in sheet form, and Udimet 700, whose higher aluminum and titanium content allows it to exhibit one of the more attractive combinations of high-temperature properties available in a wrought product. The scaling processes of complex, type nickel-base alloys have received relatively little attention. Malamand and vidal as well as Poulignier et al.2'3 have determined the composition gradients across the metal/oxide interface produced by high-temperature oxidation and considered the effect of surface perature, Limited weight-gain data has also been published by Fere 5 for alloys of this type and Radavich6 has identified the reaction products on Udimet 500 and Inco 702 after oxidation at 1832°F. Reference can, of course, be made to the excellent reviews of Kubaschewski and Hopkins7 or Ignatov and Shamgunova8 for a summary of the data available on the oxidation of binary and ternary alloy systems which are related to the more complex alloys considered here. EXPERIMENTAL The analyses of the different commercial heats studied are given in Table I. Using the experimental procedures previously established,9 continuous weight-gain data were obtained on both heats of Rene 41 sheet (A and B) and 150-mil-thick slices of cast Udimet 700. Subscale oxidation reactions were followed by static exposure of cylindrical specimens obtained from swaged Rene 41 (Heat C) and Udimet 700 (Heats E and F). In brief, continuous weight-gain tests were performed on specimens with a surface area of 10 to 12 sq cm. These were abraded through 600 grit Sic paper, electropolished to 2p rms in an electrolyte of 10 pct H2So4 in ethanol, and lightly etched in 10 pct HCl in ethanol before final washing and rinsing in ethanol. All continuous weight-gain data were obtained in dried (-70°F dew point) flowing (1 liter per min) air to an accuracy of +0.1 mg. Subscale oxidation processes were followed by the metallographic examination of 0.5-in-diam by 1.0-in.-long specimens. After an initial center-less grinding, various additional surface treatments were employed to determine the effect of surface preparation on subscale oxidation processes. Before exposure in zirconia crucibles, all samples were lightly etched in 10 pct HCl-ethanol, washed in ethanol, and dried. So FAR as the quality of the product is concerned, the history of the production of pig iron for foundry purposes is one of constant retrogression. The steps in this deterioration began with cold-blast charcoal pig iron, then anthracite iron, coke iron; then gradually warm to hot-blast coke iron, with the charcoal furnaces also heating their blast to get greater tonnages, and finally the present-day hot-blast coke irons with scrap additions to the ordinary burden that, according to one European report, have gone as high as 65 per cent. Parallel with this quality retrogression is the enormous increase in furnace tonnages from about 15 to over 1000 tons per day in exceptional instances of modern practice. Introduction PETROLEUM seepages are known in Alaska at four localities, all on Pacific seaboard. These, named from east to west, are Yakataga, Katalla on Controller Bay, Iniskin Bay on Cook Inlet, and Cold Bay on the Alaska Peninsula. Besides these, a petroleum residue has been found near Smith Bay on the north Arctic coast of the Territory. At Katalla, Cold Bay, and Iniskin Bay there has been some drilling for oil, and in the first field several productive wells have been opened up. Alaskan petroleum so far as its composition is known, is a refining oil, with paraffin base and low sulphur content. Most of what is known of the geology of Alaska oil fields is based on the investigations of Dr. George C. Martin, of the United States Geological Survey. A. G. Maddren, of the same service, has recently made a reconnaissance of the Yakataga oil field. The data to be here presented are chiefly taken from the following publications: G. C. THE discovery that strongly magnetic bodies localized near the surface of the earth could be detected by the distortion which they produced in the resultant magnetic field marked the beginning of magnetic surveying methods. From an original ability to detect bodies of magnetic iron ore and the like when located very close to the, surface, these methods have been extended until today they promise to give much information with regard to the structure of such slightly magnetic material as sedimentary rock containing only a very small proportion of iron.1 The recent extensions have been made possible through the development of more delicate instruments, and of methods for their use. From the original compass and dip needle, the design of apparatus has progressed until equipment Is typified by magnetic balances capable of measuring the components of the earth's field to an extremely high degree of accuracy. It seems unlikely that the limit of such instrumental development has been reached. Just as the change from compass and dip needle has enabled the location of relatively minor changes in magnetic materials, so additional developments in the direction of increased sensitivity, as well as in greater dependability and constancy of operation, should reveal positively many slight changes which either escape notice in the present surveys or are so small that they cannot with certainty be separated from uncontrollable errors due to inconstant operation of the equipment. The ability to read smaller and smaller variations does not mean, of course, that deductions as to the causes of these variations will be made as accurately and definitely as -is possible with the more pronounced anomalies.

MARKETWISE the year 1935 was rather a good one for most of the rare and minor metals; as a class they climbed out of the depression much faster than the common metals. The diamond market, too, was better than it had been for years, attributable only in part to investment buying, as there was a genuine pick-up in consumer demand. Wars and rumors of war tended to speed up purchases of certain metals, but consumption for peaceful purposes was the principal factor. Significant was the important role played by new industrial uses. New discoveries during the year were disappointingly few, considering the broad extent of this research frontier. Scientific developments were far from being at a stand-still, of course, but the dominant note was the cashing in on research consummated in former years. With even a moderate upturn in general business a surprising number of laboratory ideas donned overalls and found jobs in industry.

Paradoxical is the word. The coal industry, despite reach- ing a 22-year high in production (590 million tons), has been tagged as having its back to the wall vis-a-vis its valiant attempts to quench the nation's still unabated craving for coal. What must be even more reassuring to the industry, infected once with rumors of a uranium takeover, is a nation's almost insatiable appetite for electricity. Between 1967 and the summer of 1970, utility stockpiles were being gobbled up, diminishing to 79% of the January 1968 level.
