INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metal values can be divided into two broad categories: (a) Processes involving the treatment of high grade material (e.g. finely divided mineral concentrates); and (b) processes which treat lower grade material (ores, waste dumps, etc.). This discussion will be directed primarily toward the first category, but in either case a fundamental knowledge of the intrinsic kinetics and thermodynamics is necessary to understand the behavior of the system. The bulk of research efforts in the last decade along these lines has been aimed at the recovery of copper (1-8). However much information has also been reported on uranium (9, 10) , zinc (11) , cobalt and nickel (12, 13). More comprehensive reviews on these areas are also available (14). As discussed by Sepulveda and Herbst (15, 16) one of the most difficult problems facing process designers is the acquisition and scale-up of reliable information concerning the intrinsic kinetics of leaching systems. The scale-up or modeling of these multiparticle systems is far more complex than that of homogeneous ones. This is due to the numerous rate determining steps which are possible with heterogeneous reactions and the broad distribution of properties of a multiparticle feed such as particle size and mineralogical composition (16). In addition, other factors must also be considered such as interactions between particles, the anisotropic nature of individual particles, the effect of solution chemistry, and electrochemical phenomena. All of these factors must be taken into account, often simultaneously. The thrust of this paper will be to more closely examine how the factors mentioned above can be treated. HIS note reports the existence of several new scandium intermetallic compounds of the A2B and AB stoichiometries where the A element is scandium and the B element is from group VIII or IB of the periodic table. Alloys were arc melted from high-purity materials using 2-g charges. Typical lot analyses for the materials used are given in Table I. Chemical analyses were not made on the alloys as there was little or no weight loss on melting. After annealing the specimens for 14 days at 600°C and water quenching, metallographic and X-ray techniques were used to determine the occurrence of the various phases. Table II lists the relevant data for the A2B phases. The Ti2Ni structure,2 has ninety-six atoms in a face-centered cubic cell, whilst the Al2Cu structure is body-centered tetragonal.3 The occurrence and stability of the various A2B type phases in transition metal alloy systems has recently been considered by Nevitt.4 The Ti2 Ni-type phases occur over a relatively narrow range of radius ratios from 1.14-1.26 with A partners mainly from the titanium group and B partners predominantly from the cobalt group. This suggests that both a favorable relative size of the atoms and a favorable electron concentration are necessary conditions for the existence of this structure type. A12Cu-type phases involving Ti group elements as A partners are formed with B partners from the cobalt and nickel groups, predominantly the latter, and have a higher radius ratio (1.27-1.29) than the Ti2Ni-type phases. The occurrence of both Sc2Pd and Sc2Co can be rationalized in terms of these considerations but SczNi is anomalous because of its high radius ratio. The radius ratios are calculated from the Goldschmidt CN12 radii and it might be postulated that the scandium atom is reduced in size in the compound. Unfortunately the apparent atomic size of scandium in the compound cannot be calculated from a knowledge of the structure and lattice dimensions. The crystal structure of the Sc2Au compound could not be identified from the powder diffraction pattern, but it is interesting to note that it is isostructural with a series of A2Au phases where A is a rare earth element.5 Pertinent information concerning the AB phases found in this investigation is given in Table 111. All the phases have the ordered bcc CsCl structure. The occurrence and stability of CsC1-type phases have recently been discussed by Dwight,7 who concludes that the relative sizes of the atoms do not appear to be a controlling factor (the radius ratios of all the known phases vary between 0.985 and 1.439) but that the occurrence of the phase is predominantly dependent on the relative positions of the A and B partners in the periodic table. As a measure of the stability of a given CsCl phase it has been customary to define a lattice contraction on alloying, DAB — dAB, where DAB is the AB interatomic spacing as calculated from the Goldschmidt CN8 radii and dAB is the AB interatomic distance in the compound (= v3/2 ao). Values of the parameter DscB -dScB for the compounds found in this investigation are given in column 5 of Table III and are plotted in Fig. 1. If the lattice contraction does in fact reflect the stability of a phase then Fig. 1 shows two very interesting trends when the position of the B partner in the periodic table is considered. Firstly, within any given group the stability increases in order on going from the first to third long period. Secondly, within any given period the stability increases in order as the B partner is taken from the copper, nickel, and cobalt groups. In the case of the second long period, the lattice contraction reaches a maximum at ScRh and then decreases to ScRu. The same trend could

The Banner mining district is about 70 miles northeast of Tucson in the southern part of Gila County, Arizona. Production from the district, valued at about $26 million, is chiefly from copper-silver-lead zinc ores. The stratigraphic section consists of Precambrian conglomerates, quartzites, dolomites, and limestones, Cambrian quartzites; Devonian limestones; dolomites, and shales; Mississippian limestones; Pennsylvanian limestones and shales; and Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Deformation of these rocks presumably started near the end of the Cretaceous, and extended into the late Tertiary. The sedimentary rocks were folded, faulted, and intruded by fine grained diorite, quartz mica diorite, and dacite porphyry. At least four distinct stages of mineralization are recognized. In the first stage of contact metamorphism and the second stage of hydrothermal alteration, favorable zones were prepared for ore deposition. Metallization occurred in three of the mineralizing stages. Magnetite, pyrite, and hematite were deposited near the end of the second stage of hydrothermal alteration. The third stage included the main deposition of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and galena. In the fourth and final stage, minor amounts of sulfide minerals were deposited with a late anhydrite and quartz gangue. The ore deposits in the form of veins and veinlets, pipes, irregular massive replacements, and bedded replacements are localized by the extent and distribution of metamorphic and hydrothermal alteration, by the proximity to the intrusive contacts, and by the effects of structural development. Oxidized ores of copper, lead, and zinc constituted the principal production of the district prior to 1940, but, for the most part, supergene enrichment was of minor economic importance. The ore bodies of the district are in the mesothermal class of deposits, occurring as normal metasomatic replacement and vein types.

In ternary systems containing silicon and transition elements, silicon was found to stabilize the a phase.1 At 1000°C a broad a-phase region was found in the Cr-Mn-Si system,1 which extends very close to the Mn-Si binary line (within about 3 at. pct Cr). Later investigation showed that, if chromium was replaced by small amounts (3 to 5 at. pct) of v,1 Ti, Nb, Ta, Mo, or w,1 the a phase or the R phase was again stabilized. Whether stabilization of complex crystal structures is possible by small additions of iron, cobalt, or nickel to Mn-Si is not known. Investigation of the Co-Mn-Si system4 shows the presence of several ternary phases, but at cobalt concentrations higher than 10 at. pct. In the present work the ternary systems Fe-Mn-Si and Co-Mn-Si were investigated at low iron and cobalt concentrations (< 7 at. pct Fe or Co) in search of phases of complex crystal structure. Experimental Procedure. The alloys were pre-pared by induction melting Co (99.8 pct), Si (99.9 pct), electrolytic Fe (99.88 pct), and Mn (99.9 pct) in recrystallized alumina crucibles under an inert atmosphere of argon gas. The alloy specimens were wrapped in molybdenum foil, sealed in argon-filled (at 1/2 atm) silica capsules and annealed for 72 hr at 1000" 1°C, and water-quenched. The use of argon-filled capsules was found to reduce the losses during annealing and the molybdenum foil prevented reaction of the manganese with silica. The total weight loss due to annealing and melting was found to be less than 1 pct for each alloy. The alloys were not analyzed chemically. A part of each annealed specimen was polished and examined metal-lographically using etching solutions, a) 0.1 to 0.5 pct oxalic acid solution in water, or b) 0.5 pct HNOs in methyl alcohol. Even though the etching solutions were quite dilute, the specimens were heavily etched and stained if the etching time exceeded more than 5 sec. Etching times found suitable were usually 1 to 3 sec. For X-ray diffraction work, a part of each annealed specimen was powdered by crushing after the exposed surface was ground off. X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with powder specimens using a 20-cm-diam asymmetrical focusing camera and Fe K radiation. These powder patterns were found quite satisfactory for the purpose of phase identification. However, X-ray diffraction patterns of single-phase alloy powder specimens were also taken using a Siemens diffractometer and filtered Cr-Ka radiation for greater resolution of the diffraction lines. Results and Discussion. In the Fe-Mn-Si system a new ternary phase was found at 1000°C between the p manganese and the MnsSi phase regions. The approximate phase relationships in this region of the 1000°C isothermal section are shown in Fig. 1. The new ternary phase, designated as the K phase, was found to occupy a narrow region about 1 at. pct in width and extending from Fee.oMn74.5Silg.5 to Fe.Mn.Silg.. At the high-iron content region, the K phase was found in equilibrium with the p manganese and the MnsSi phases but, at the low-iron content end of the K-phase region, the phases in equilibrium with the K phase were the p manganese phase, the MnsSi phase, and another new phase, designated in Fig. 1 as the v phase. SHORTLY after publication of the article in the July, 1924, issue Of MINING AND METALLURGY, entitled "Canada as a Gold Producer," requests were received to determine the ownership of production. Advices have also been received that considerable discussion has taken place on the same questions both in Canada and Great Britain. The author is indebted to R. H. Coates, Dominion Statistician, and George C. Bateman, Secretary, Ontario Mining Association, for the following figures and takes this opportunity of expressing his appreciation. There have been no statistics compiled as to ownership of production. Statistics were compiled as of Dec. 31, 1921 relative to the distribution of stocks, bonds and "other securi¬ties" in industrials, agriculture excepted, throughout the Dominion, and "distribution of ownership of securities issued by mining companies incorporated and operating in Ontario" for the same year. Stock registration does not necessarily represent actual ownership&apos; as large blocks may be endorsed and not transferred; neither does registration actually represent production. When the charts are studied individually and collectively one cannot help but be impressed with the fact .that in the mineral industry of Ontario and the Dominion at large, Canadian registration predominates, the United States registration is about half that of Canada, and Great Britain is about half that of the United States. When the nickel-copper industry is excepted the British registration falls to a very low percentage. Since Dec. 31, 1921, British capital has commenced to flow into mining enterprises in Ontario and it has been already rewarded by the discovery of valuable ore deposits.

I am happy to welcome you to the twenty-third conference of the National Open-Hearth Committee, and our joint conference with the Blast Furnace Committee, of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. It is appropriate that, for our fifteenth year anniversary, we should meet in the hotel and the city where this Open-Hearth Committee was inaugurated in 1925. At that first meeting, only a handful of men from a number of steel companies met to discuss ways and means to start a movement to improve the practical and metallurgical technique of open-hearth operations among independent manufacturers, as the United States Steel Corporation had carried on for many years.

The effects of impurities on the electrical properties of silicon are discussed in a companion paper by Messrs. Scaff, Theuerer, and Schumacher.&apos; It was shown that an ingot of silicon which contained boron and phosphorus in certain concentrations consisted partly of p-silicon and partly of n-silicon2 and that the common boundary between these regions was the source of a photo-voltage. These features were ascribed to the segregation of boron and phosphorus during solidification of the ingot. Because of different rates of segregation the first portion of the ingot to freeze contained a molar excess of boron over phosphorus and hence was p-silicon. The last-solidified region contained a molar excess of phosphorus and was n-silicon. This paper is concerned with the microscopic examination of such ingots. The microstructures are rather unusual in certain respects and their study has helped to show how the segregation of minor elements modifies the electrical properties of silicon. The microstructures of ingots prepared from two lots of silicon, designated 1 and 2, will be described. These lots were obtained from the Electro Metallurgical Co. Both contain 99.8+ pct silicon, but they differ in impurity analysis. For each lot will be shown the microstruc-ture of a slowly cooled ingot, for which the time of solidification is 6 min., and that of a rapidly cooled ingot, for which the time of solidification is 2 min. The ingots were prepared from 45 g charges of silicon. When an alloy freezes a cored structure is generally produced because of insufficient diffusion to remove concentration differences established during freezing. As a result of coring the first portion of a crystal to freeze is usually poorer in solute than equilibrium requires, while the last material to solidify is richer. In a columnar grain, growth is principally unidirectional and coring can produce a concentration gradient along the entire grain. By carrying the picture of the coring process from a single grain to an entire ingot in which columnar grains are aligned more or less radially, one can easily see that a composition gradient could be established between the outside and center of the ingot. This, to a considerable extent, occurs during the solidification of a slowly cooled ingot of silicon. Slowly Cooled Ingot In slowly cooled ingots of both lots of silicon, columnar grains which are approximately radial in direction and longest at the top of the ingot enclose a region in which the shapes and align- ment of the grains are considerably less regular. The central region is last to solidify and contains cavities and inclusions. The sketch of Fig 1 illustrates some of these features, as well as others which will be described below. If a polished section of an ingot is etched in a mixture of 2 parts of 20 pct HF and 98 parts of HNO3 the p-n barrier becomes visible. The overall shape of the barrier in a slowly-cooled ingot is roughly oval, as may be seen in Fig 1. The proportion of n-silicon, that is, the region enclosed by the barrier, is considerably greater in ingots of lot 1 than in those of lot 2. A sample about 34 x 1/8 X 1/8 in. was cut from a slowly cooled ingot of lot 1 with its long direction extending from the top of the ingot to the porous region. Thus its upper half was psilicon, its lower half n-silicon. A longitudinal face was polished and etched in the acid mixture. The areas of interest are identified in Fig 2. A band of parallel markings extends across the sample in the columnar region. These striae are roughly parallel to the upper surface of the ingot and cross grain boundaries with only slight deviations. They are quite distinct in the n-silicon,

For electrolytic recovery of silver from dilute aqueous solutions improved mass transfer is necessary to achieve favourable current efficiencies and high space-time yields. The many cell designs proposed for this application can be divided into two different groups: cells from which the silver must be redissolved and cells from which the deposit can be reclaimed as a metal. Introduction Electrolytic silver recovery methods have proven advantageous under technical and economic aspects for the treatment of rinse water, still rinses and spent silver solutions in the electroplating and surface finishing industry, of exhausted fixing baths from photographic processing, bleed electrolytes from silver refining processes and leach liquors. Examples of the compositions of typical dilute silver solutions are listed in Table I.

FOR more than 25 years a few business men who represent virile private enterprise in the Pacific Northwest have been trying to awaken the community to the potential benefits of an open Columbia River. No threat of government com- petition then hung over the industry, which was adjusted to state regulation. Numerous sites were engineered and the findings were laid before the operators of heavy industry in the East, Middle West, and South -even of Europe. These engineering data became, if not the basis, the inspiration upon which the U. S. Army Engineers eventually were to "build the Columbia River Bible" - their great document known as House Document 103, the report on the Columbia River and minor tributaries.
