The rate of dissolution of alumina in carbon-saturated liquid iron has been studied experimentally in a system where alumina was in the form of a cylindrical rod immersed in an iron bath contained in a graphite crucible. Data obtained consisted of the concentrations of aluminum in the melt as a function of time. In the case of static experiments, the data are shown to agree with theoretical prdictions based on the diffusion of aluminum.. The rate of dissolution was greatly increased by the rotation of the alumina rod. It is concluded that the diffusion of aluminum from the alumina/metal interface is the rate-controlling step. In the past, thermodynamic investigations of systems encountered in ferrous process metallurgy have received widespread attention. More recently, considerable work has been devoted to the study of kinetics associated with these systems in an effort to determine their rate controlling mechanisms. The alumina-iron system is of great importance in ferrous metallurgy. Yet information concerning kinetics of reaction in this system is seriously limited. The present study was made in order to establish the rate-controlling step for dissolution of solid alumina in liquid iron. LITERATURE REVIEW A number of papers concerning dissolution of solid metals in liquid metals have been reported in the literat~re. Generally, for these simple systems, dissolution is controlled by mass transfer of the dissolving species. Complex systems involving dissolution of solid metal carbides and oxides in liquid metals and slags have been studied to a much lesser extent. Skolnick5,6 reported on the reaction between liquid cobalt and poly-crystalline cylinders of tungsten carbide, in which the cylinders were dissolved while being rotated about their longitudinal axes at various speeds and temperatures. As a result of unexpected preferential grain boundary attack by the liquid cobalt, large errors in the measured dissolution rates occurred because of loss of tungsten carbide grains to the liquid cobalt. Nevertheless, it was possible to establish that the liquid Co-W carbide reaction was not controlled by mass transfer. In a similar approach, cooper7 was able to show that artificial sapphire rods, (alumina single crystals) dissolving in lime-alumina-silica slags obeyed a mechanism of mass transfer control. Here, again, the rods were rotated at various speeds and temperatures, and the process was followed as a function of these variables. Forster and Knacke8 took a practical approach to reaction between slags and refractories. By blowing argon through refractory cylinders of silica, silli-manite, or dolomite and directing the gas to rise along the slag-refractory interface, it was possible to increase the rate of mass transfer. Although the method was admittedly crude, it nevertheless permitted an evaluation of the relative stabilities of refractories with respect to slag attack. Data were interpreted on the basis of mass transfer control. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Apparatus. An illustration of the apparatus used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace consisted of a Morganite recrystallized alumina tube wound with a molybdenum coil. A secondary molybdenum heater was mounted around the upper half of the primary coil to aid in controlling the thermal gradient within the furnace. The primary heater tube was 3 in. in ID and 30 in. long. A reducing mixture of 95 pct N and 5 pct H was maintained around the heating elements. Thermal insulation was provided by alumina powder. The chamber within the primary combustion tube contained a boron nitride block near the top to assist in controlling the thermal gradient to the furnace and also to provide a bearing surface for the rotating graphite shaft. The outside diameter of the graphite shaft was $ in. A separate threaded graphite specimen holder was screwed into the end of the shaft. The holder contained a tapered hole drilled into the end to guide the oxide specimens as they were pressed into it for mounting. Additional guidance for the rotating graphite shaft was furnished by a water-cooled bronze bushing attached to the top of the furnace. A steel clamp was fastened to the upper end of the graphite shaft and rested on a thrust bearing; the shaft and clamp were driven by a dc motor through a set of gears. Two O-rings located immediately above the bronze bushing maintained a gas-tight seal about the graphite shaft. The lower half of the alumina tube housed the crucible and charge, which were placed on a 3/4-in. diam movable alumina support tube. With this arrangement, charges could be inserted into or removed from the furnace while the hot zone was maintained at or above 1000°C. To control the temperature of the furnace, the thermocouple was mounted inside the support tube and in contact with the crucible bottom. Stray electric fields in the furnace were of sufficient intensity to cause erratic indications by the thermocouple. By enclosing the thermocouple protection tube in a molybdenum sheath and grounding this shield, the problem was eliminated. Output of the thermocouple went to an automatic continuous balance controller. Procedure. A typical run was as follows. Dissolution of a ferric oxide in acid solution is divided into two different types In the accelerated type dissolution proceeds in three stages 1) an inittal reaction during which the dissolved amount of oxide is nearly proportional to the cube root of time ; 2) an accelerated reaction: and 3) a final stage during which dissolution approaches completion. This course of dissolution gives an S-shaped curve in the above sequence OH a log weight percent of dissolved oxide against log time graph. In the parabolic type dissolution proceeds in four stages: first and second stages similar to those of the accelerated type; 3) parabolic-rate dissolution during which the dissolved amount of oxide is nearly proportional to the square root of time: and 4) a final stage. The effect of the kind of acid, the temperature of solution, and the concentration of acid was investigated. The results are discussed and a rate equation is proposed. AN attempt has been made to obtain some information on dissolution of a ferric oxide in various acid solutions. In view of hydrometallurgical processes the dissolution of ferric oxide is of less importance than that of zinc oxide or copper oxide in general. One of a few processes which intend to dissolve ferric oxide is an elimination of iron impurity from acid-insoluble materials. However, most leaching processes of oxide ores and cinders are accompanied with more or less dissolution of iron. According to Pryor and Evans1 the rate of dissolution of a ferric oxide in various acids decreased in the order of hydrofluoric acid > hydrochloric acid > sulfuric acid > perchloric acid. This mine is operated at 4000 to 4500 tons daily through a single shaft, with one rock hoist and one senice hoist. Latest shaft construction is concrete with wooden dividers. Economics of drifters and air-leg drills are compared, as well as costs of shrinkage and sub-level stoping. Economy of large haulage equipment and underground crushing is shown. THE property of Kerr-Addison Gold Mines is located in the Larder Lake district of Ontario about 3 miles from the Quebec boundary on the highway between Kirkland Lake and Noranda. It is roughly 320 miles due north of Toronto and 365 miles north of Buffalo, N. Y. The property was staked in 1906 and after several development efforts finally came into continuous production at 500 tons per day in 1937. In 1939 the daily tonnage -was increased to 1200 and in 1941 to 2100 tons. At the end of the war, because of the shortage of labor, tonnage was down to 1100 tons per day, rising to 2200 in February 1947. A further plant expansion inaugurated in 1946 was completed by December 1948, bringing the capacity of the mine and mill to a production rate of 4000 tons per day. Current production, with 880 men employed, is 4400 tons per day. Changes in mining methods and equipment, required by the recently completed expansion program, have yielded interesting comparative results, some of which are described in this paper. Hoisting of ore and waste from the mine, as well as all service facilities for handling men and supplies underground, are provided for in a single vertical five-compartment shaft. Ore and waste are hoisted in 12½-ton skips in balance by a 14-ft diam hoist with drums 115 in. wide, grooved for 2?-in. wire ropes. This hoist, with a total rope pull of 85,000 lb, was designed to operate at a speed of 2600 ft per min to a depth of 4000 ft, hoisting 15 tons of ore in each skip. It is amplidyne-controlled and powered with dual drive dc motors of 2250-hp each, through flexible couplings to two pinion shafts, one on each side of the main gear. Each motor has a peak load rating of 4500-hp at point of greatest duty. Direct current power to the hoist motors is supplied from a motor generator set consisting of a 5000-hp synchronous motor driving two 1750-kw dc generators. The loading pockets used so far are at depths of 1500 and 2725 ft respectively. Consequently the present hoisting speed is 2000 ft per min and the skips capacity only 12½ tons. Now that the shaft has been deepened the new pockets at 3934 ft will be increasingly used so that the speed and the skip size will be increased up to original specifications as required. Some difficulty in meeting the required hoisting cycle is expected because of the shape of the skips. As now in use the cross-sectional dimensions of the inside of the skip are 4 ft 6 in. x 3 ft 8 in. To hold 121/2 tons, therefore, they are 14 ft 10 in. deep. Since the skips are the conventional overturning or Kim-berley type, considerable hoisting time is lost in retardation in entering the headframe dump and in acceleration when leaving. It is expected that to obtain the specified tonnage from this hoist when the skip size is increased to 15 tons it may be necessary to resort to bottom dump skips. This type of skip could reduce considerably the present excessive acceleration and retardation times. Analyses of the skip-hoisting operation are made monthly, and every effort is made to reduce controllable delays. For a nine-month period in 1951 such an analysis shows that the hoist was in operation 92.5 pct of the available time, which was allotted as shown in Table I. Overall hoisting costs, cage and skip, for the year 1951, averaged $0.168 per ton of ore milled. This paper outlines a series of tests carried out during the first six months of 1927, in the laboratory and mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. The object of the tests was to determine whether the soluble salts present in the mill circuit water were having a detrimental cffect on the recovery made by flotation. To accomplish this object a series of water analyses were made, followed by flotation experiments in which definite quantities of the salts found were added as addition agents. Before proceeding to describe the results obtained in the course of the investigation, reference will be made to five articles that have appeared during the last two years in which the action of such salts is discussed. Two of these are by A. T. Tye1, 2 and describe flotation practice at Cananea and the way in which water high in ferrous and ferric salts is conditioned for differential flotation. Two, one by A. C. Munro and H. A. Pearse3 and the other by H. A. Pearse,4 outline Britannia milling methods, and the advantages that have been derived from ore washing; while in the fifth, A. W. Hahn5 summarizes the results of laboratory experiments in which ferrous, ferric and aluminum sulfates have been added in varying amounts. The mill of the Moctezuma Copper Co. has a daily capacity of 3000 tons, and is situated about 75 miles south of Douglas, Arizona, on the Rio de Nacozari, in the Mexican state of Sonora. The ore treated is mined from the company's mine at Pilares, about 5 miles southeast of the Concentrator. I fear most of the Institute members are already weary of the perennial controversy about the apex law. I feel that way about it myself now, though I have been guilty of considerable contribution- to the discussion in the past. The discussion does not seem to perceptibly influence previously held views and I would not again break into print on the subject but for the urgent invitation of the Chairman of our Law Committee. This energetic and able member has firmly determined to secure a revision of the mining law and among other things to eliminate the so-called apex provision from the U. S. mining statutes. He is, however, fair about it and has invited me to make ((the strongest possible argument in its favor." I am suspicious that he is acting on the psychological principle that it is usually easier to convince an audience against a cause vigorously but unsuccessfully defended than against one wholly mute. Nevertheless, I realize that personally he wishes me no harm, much as he hates the apex law, and so am willing that the Institute have whatever benefit may accrue from my taking up again the unpopular side of the discussion. I say this because the attitude of a large part of our "articulate" membership seems irreconcilably hostile; their minds are made up; favorable consideration is foreclosed; and they become impatient and even sarcastic at any attempt to elucidate a favorable view of the apex law. The exact question for discussion at the present time is not whether on abstract, or any other considerations, the apex law is the best possible rule, but the very different proposition whether, after nearly 50 years of statutory life and much longer as a practically universal miners' custom, it is now just and expedient to repeal the apex law. At this point it seems to me that we may profitably devote a paragraph or two to the subject of the origin of law in general, as we are presumed to be considering the subject from the high viewpoint of the general welfare of the nation. The most comprehensive and accurate definition of law in the legal sense is, that it is the body of rules for the regulation of human conduct which is enforced by the State, that is, by the nation.l Legal

This paper summarizes recent research on the kinetic aspects and process behavior of agglomeration in balling circuits. The physical concepts underlying agglomeration, the mechanisms responsible for size changes during agglomeration, and a generalized population balance model for agglomeration systems are summarized. Experimental techniques for investigating the batch balling behavior and for simulating the balling- circuit operations are reviewed. Further, the effect of such operating variables as feed moisture, bentonite content, and the rate of feed addition are discussed. An approach to the computer simulation of the agglomerating circuits is shown and the importance of such models in process engineering is discussed.

Practically all underground work on the Minnesota iron ranges is done by miners working on a so-called contract wage system. This system, while it has certain advantages over the straight day's pay or company-account method of wage payment, has serious and vital defects. In view of the scarcity and demands of labor, it is important that employers of labor scrutinize their systems of wage payments carefully, not only to save losses and trouble, due to labor disturbances, but also to secure the greatest efficiency of their workmen and reduce their operating costs. It is admitted that an adequate, just, and equitable wage is the prime factor in bringing about these benefits. The wage of labor and its method of application and payment have been, and always will be, the main factors in the unrest and dissatis. faction of labor. Not only does labor want and need an adequate wage, assuming that work is adequately performed, but it wants and is entitled to a just and equitable wage. Labor must have respect for the fairness of the wage and for the fairness of the management in the application of the wage It is conceded that the Minnesota iron miners are now, and have been, in the main paid adequately, but the inherent defects of the so-called contract system prevent any just or equitable application of this wage to the various units of the labor body. The defects of the contract system, with its obvious inequalities, favoritisms, and injustices, are cancers in the brain of labor. Every thinking miner realizes these defects and knows just what they are; the unthinking do not realize the details of the subject, but each month they are forcibly reminded of these defects through the pay envelope. As practiced on the iron ranges, however, the so-called "contract " system is not a contract and the name is a misnomer. No true contractual obligation exists. As usually practised, the contract system involves the setting of a price per foot in development work, or per foot or per car, usually the latter, in slicing or stoping, by the mining captain, and assumes its acceptance, though often under protest, by the men. A price is set for each working place, in which there are usually two men per shift. This price includes labor and supplies, such as explosives, fuse and caps, shovels, carbide, etc., and the men divide the total earnings less the amount expended for supplies. The effect of temperature, impurities, and capillarity on the morphology of solid particles in a liquid matrix is investigated. For the NbC-liquid iron system, at least, it is found that those particles which are dissolving will assume a spherical shape; all others will take the equilibrium shape. An aniso-tropic-isotropic transition in the interfacial tension is observed at about 1725°C and is believed to be due to cooperative roughening of the interface on an atomic scale. The presence of boron as an impurity lowers the transition temperature. It is the purpose of this paper to present some observations on the shape of particles in a system consisting of solid particles of nonuniform size in a liquid matrix and to propose an explanation for these observations. Although qualitative only, these observations, which were made largely in the course of a study of particle-growth kinetics,' are presented separately to draw attention to them. They reveal the effect of particle size, temperature, and surface-active impurities on particle shape in the solid NbC-liquid iron system, and are unique in demonstrating for the first time the reversible effect of temperature and impurity concentration on the anisotropy of the energy of the solid-liquid interfaces involved. Some of the changes are readily demonstrated with the few particles whose shapes can be clearly shown in a single photomicrograph, but others are more subtle, and their recognition depends upon some experience and the study of a much larger sample. For this reason, a certain amount of judgment must be acknowledged to underlie their detection, but every effort was made to maintain proper scientific objectivity in evaluating the observations. The observations will be presented first, and then an explanation rationalizing them will be offered. Brief reminders of the relevant theories will be inserted into the discussion at the appropriate points. EXPERIMENTAL The observations were made of the shape of NbC particles dispersed in liquid iron. All specimens were prepared by pressing NbC powder and car- bony1 iron powder treated according to standard powder-metallurgical procedures. Except as noted, all specimens were heated to 1900°C for 1/2 hr. In investigating the effect of temperature, specimens were quenched from 1900°C to various lower temperatures, and held long enough (48 hr) to allow shape changes to be completed. Boron, in the form of amorphous powder, and oxygen, in the form of niobium oxide powder, were added as impurities to some specimens. Nitrogen was introduced into some specimens as an impurity by heat treating the samples under a partial pressure of nitrogen gas. Effect of Temperature. It was first observed that increasing temperature had a marked effect in rounding the corners and edges of the particles. At 1900°C the particles are all very nearly spherical and remain so even when the holding time is extended to 48 hr. As can be seen from Fig. 1, there is virtually no evidence of the presence of low-index planes. At 1300°C, however, most of the particles are prismatic with very slightly rounded edges and corners, Fig. 2. (In making these shape comparisons, attention should be focused on the larger particles, even though the smaller ones would be expected to be the first to change shape, owing to the shorter diffusion distances involved. The Cu-Sn-As systeM was studied in the region near the Cu-42 and (214-As binary diagrams, where reactions in the solid state appear, resulting from the decomposition of the y(Cu-Sn) phase and from the formation of the 7 phase (Cu,As). The techniques used were microscopic observation, thermal analysis by dilatometry, and X-vay diffraction. The formation of the 7 phase gives rise to a ternavy pevitectoid veaction; the decomposition of the y phase gives rise to five transitional reactions. The temperatures of almost all these reactions could be determined; in the most favorable cases , the accuracy of this determination was of 11.5-C. The 7 phase is stabilized by tin additions, the arsenic atoms being replaced by tin atoms up to 35 pct; this has allowed the preparation of pure j) phase and the confirmation, by extrapolation, of the conrposition of this compound in the Cu-As diagram. In the first part of this work, the solidification reactions in the Cu-Sn-As phase diagram were studied. In the copper corner, the structure of the alloys presented the evidence of reactions in the solid state: on the one hand, all the alloys containing the y phase of the Cu-Sn diagram showed, under the microscope, that this phase had formed different decomposition products after complete solidification; on the other hand, the appearance of the 7 phase of the Cu-As diagram necessitated the introduction of a peritectoid formation reaction. The study of the decomposition of the y phase has been done by preparing about forty alloys that were homogeneous y at high temperature. The formation of the 7 phase has been studied by means of a few alloys with a composition near the homogeneity field of this phase at room temperature. The part of the Cu-Sn phase diagram of interest for this study is represented by Fig. 1, with the phase designation which will be used in the remainder of this paper; it is drawn after Hansen and Anderko.' The Cu-As diagram has already been presented in Part I of this work; the significant features of this study are the existence of the arsenides CusAs and Cu5Asz, and the formation of a compound CUEAS, designated as the 7 phase, by a peritectoid reaction at about 325°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The fundamental technique for the investigation of this part of the Cu-Sn-As constitution diagram was microscopic observation; the greatest part of the observed alloys has also been subjected to thermal analysis by dilatometry; a few selected alloys have then undergone an X-ray analysis by powder diffraction. Alloy Preparation. The alloys were prepared from the same products as in Part I of this study: cathode copper, arsenic with a purity better than 99.5, and tin with a purity of 99.98. The quenching technique has been used for- a study of phase velntiorzs within the composition triangle 2CaO.Fe2O3-FeO.Fe2O3 Fe2O3 of the system Ca-Fe-O. Desired total compositions of sanzples were attained by weighing of starting materials in required proportions and keeping them in sealed 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh tubes during equilibration .runs. The liquidus surface has been delineated. the existence of two ternary compounds has been established, and seven ternary inwariant situations have been determined. ONE unit within the research program on refractory oxides in progress in our laboratories is the study of phase relations in the system Ca-Fe-Si-O. The present paper deals with the ternary system 2CaOFe2O3-FeO.Fe2O3-Fe2O3, which is only a small part of the enormously complex quaternary system. Many of the phases occurring in iron ore sinter products have compositions which can be closely approximated within this ternary system, and a knowledge of stability relations existing among these phases may be expected to be a useful guide for improving sintering operations. Two fundamentally different experimental approach es are commonly used in studies of systems containing iron oxides, both permitting control of the oxidation state of Fe. One method consists in keeping constant the oxygen partial pressure of the gas phase in equilibrium with condensed phases (liquid and crystalline). In the other method, which is the one used in the present investigation, the total composition of condensed phases is kept essentially constant by keeping the samples in a gas-tight container. The details of this experimental procedure will be described in a later section. PREVIOUS WORK Extensive studies of phase relations in the bounding binary system FeOFe2O3-Fe2O3 have been reported by Greig, Posnjak, Merwin, and Sosman,' by Darken and Gurry,2, 3 and recently by Phillips and Muan.4 A diagram summarizing the results of these studies is shown in Fig. 1. SURROUNDING the nuclear core of an atomic energy plant there are usually one or more thick walls of concrete, as required to protect instruments and personnel from the harmful effects of nuclear radiations. Sometimes these massive walls are of ordinary concrete weighing about 150 pcf. To reduce wall thicknesses, concrete weighing 200 to 350 pcf may be used. Such high densities are obtained by using natural aggregate processed from heavy ore, or by using steel slugs or iron shot in concrete. Mix data for a number of high-density concretes are summarized in Table I.1 High density at low cost is of prime importance in shields designed to absorb gamma rays. On the other hand, biological shields located near the reactor core must attenuate neutrons as well as gamma rays. In general, a biological shield should contain: 1) heavy elements to slow down high energy neutrons and to absorb gamma rays, 2) either light elements or hydrogenous materials to moderate neutrons of intermediate energy, and 3) materials to absorb neutrons once they have been slowed down to thermal energies. Some shield materials, iron and water for example, are effective in one or more of the above ways. On the other hand, some otherwise excellent shield materials have certain undesirable radiation properties that limit the ways or number of places they can be used. For example, when iron absorbs neutrons it emits secondary gamma rays of high energy. On the other hand, boron absorbs neutrons avidly without producing high energy gamma rays. In spite of its high cost, boron is sometimes used in concrete to minimize production of secondary gamma rays. In some shielding applications it is necessary to avoid materials that become radioactive when subjected to neutron bombardment, continuing to give off high energy gamma rays for long periods after being removed from a neutron field.

"The obscurity which still veils from us the true nature of veins will become more acid more cleared up when they can be considered in connection with the geological structure of the regions in which they occur." 1 THESE words, according to Lossen, the biographer of the late Dr. A. von Groddeck, of Clausthal, were the last received by him from that eminent man, perhaps the most far-sighted and carefully progressive of recent writers on ore-deposits. They seem to me to form a fitting text for what I am about to say ; since I find that many of the conclusions at which I have arrived by my own study of the structural relations of ore-deposits,or, in other words, of the structural and dynamic geology of the regions in which they occur in this country, have been similarly determined by hint within recent years in Europe, and especially in his home field of work, the Harz. I shall not enter upon a detailed account of how far other workers may have arrived at similar conclusions with myself, since these questions of priority are of little interest, except to those immediately concerned; but will briefly present the methods by which, in my work in this country, I have arrived at certain generalizations, and will point out the practical bearing which they may have upon the work of mining engineers. In a study of the blast-furnace process, the Bureau of Mines has made many experiments for the purpose of determining the exact nature of the combustion of coke in the neighborhood of the tuyeres. Two papers1 presented at a meeting of this Institute discussed somewhat the practical aspects of coke combustibility in its relation to the operation of the blast furnace. In a later paper,2 Sherman and Kinney discussed the possible effect of variations in the combustibility of cokes on the furnace operation, and find that the "reoxidation theory" of Koppers and the "heat concentration theory" of Brassert³ are insuffcient to explain the variation in the conduct of different cokes that has been observed by furnace operators. In their report to the D-5 Committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, with which the Bureau of Mines has been cooperating, Perrott and Fieldner4 seem to agree with Sherman and Kinney that, for practical purposes, the nature of the combustion of coke at the tuyeres of any furnace is constant and is affected neither by the physical properties of the coke nor by the nature of the furnace operation. They omit as unimportant any tests on the combustibility of coke from their proposed methods for standard tests on coke. Finite difference equations were programmed and used to integrate the second-order, second-degree, partial differential equation with variable coefficients that represents the transient linear flow of gas-condensate fluids. Effect was given to the change with pressure of the compressibility factor, the viscosity, and the effective permeability and to change of the absolute permeability with distance. Integrations used as illustrations include recovery of fluid from a reservoir at a constant production rate followed by recovery at a declining rate calculated to maintain a constant pressure at the producing boundary. The time required to attain such a limiting pressure and the fraction of the reserve recovered in that time vary markedly with properties of the fluid represented by the coefficients. Fluid also is returned to the reservoir at a constant rate, until initial formation pressure is attained at the input boundary, and then at a calculated rate that will maintain but not exceed the limiting pressure. The computing programs were used to calculate the results that would be obtained in a series of back-pressure tests made at selected intervals of reservoir depletion. If effect is given to the variations in properties of the fluid that actually occur, then a series of back- pressure curves — one for each stage of reserve depletion — is required to indicate open-flow capacity and related flow characteristics dependably. The isochronal performnce method for determining flow characteristics of a well was simulated by computation. INTRODUCTION The back-pressure test procedurel is based on a derivation of the equation for steady-state radial flow of a gas, the properties of which are of necessity assumed to remain unchanged in applying the test results. The properties of most natural gases being recovered from reservoirs change as the reserve is depleted and pressures decline, and the results of an early back-pressure test may not be dependable for estimating the future delivery capacity of a well. The compressibility factor of a fluid under an initial pressure of 10,000 psia can change 45 per cent and the viscosity can change 70 per cent during the productive life of the reservoir. There are indications that the effective permeability to the flowing fluid can become 50 per cent of the original absolute permeability before enough liquid collects in the structure about a well as pressure declines to permit flow of liquid into the well. The advent of programmed electronic computing made practicable the integration of nonlinear, second-order, partial differentia1 equations2.3 pertaining to flow in reservoirs. Aronofsky and Porter4 represented the compressibility factor and the viscosity by a linear relationship, and integrated the equation for radial flow of gas for pressures up to 1,200 psi. Bruce, Peaceman, Rachford and Rice5 integrated the partial differential equations for both linear and radial unsteady-state flow of ideal gas in porous media. Their published results were a substantial guide in this study of integration of the partial differential equation of linear flow with coefficients of the equation variable. The computing program was developed to treat effective permeability as being both distance-dependent and pressure-dependent. In this study all examples of effective permeability are assumptions designed primarily to aid in developing programs for giving effect to this and other variable coefficients. The accumulation of data for expressing the pressure dependency of the effective permeability is the objective of a concurrent investigation. The use of model studies for the development of invasion patterns for cycling is .illustrated by model studies obtained with a recently developed apparatus in the solution of actual cycling problems. Introduction Depletion of a gas reservoir by cycling under pressure maintenance may be divided into three general phases. In the first phase, injection of dry gas is used to move all possible wet gas to producing wells prior to breakthrough of appreciable quantities of dry gas into producing wells. In the second phase, injection moves additional wet gas to producing wells while moderate quantities of dry gas are being produced. The third phase consists of production without injection to deplete the commercial gas reserve which remains after the cycling operation. Thus, in the first phase, a portion of the reservoir is invaded by dry gas, and the dry gas usually displaces something less than 100 pct of the wet gas from the invaded portions of the reservoir. The second phase enlarges the invaded portion of the reservoir and, at the same time, increases recovery from that zone invaded by dry gas in the first phase of the cycling operation. The result is an early yield of a substantial quantity of the liquefiable hydrocarbons in the reservoir with a minimum of the retrograde losses which occur in some reservoirs. The overall recovery from such an operation is usually high. The summation of the paths taken by dry gas in a cycling operation can be termed an invasion pattern. The use of electrical models to predict invasion patterns has been the subject of several contributions to the literature.1-3 The results of such model studies as applied to actual cases has been discussed by Kelton4 and Miller and Lents.= Recently, an improved apparatus for conducting potentiometric model studies has been developed, as described by Lee.V he purpose of this paper is to present model studies or invasion patterns obtained with this instrument in the solution of actual cycling problems. The percentage of displacement of wet gas within the invaded portion of the reservoir in cycling, increase in recoveries of wet gas by continuing cycling after dry gas breakthrough, recoveries of wet and dry gas by production after cycling, or economic factors in cycling are beyond the scope of this paper. Discussions which follow will be limited entirely to the development of suitable invasion patterns for cycling under pressure maintenance and the use of model studies therein. IN spite of the very general employment of nitride hardening, there is still considerable doubt as to the real nature of the mechanism involved. Experience has shown that the addition of small amounts of hardening elements to iron or steel results in a wide variety of desirable properties in a nitrided case. Perhaps the foremost of these elements is aluminum and in this investigation an attempt has been made to study the behavior of aluminum during the hardening process. It is believed that the establishment of a complete atomic picture of the metal at various stages of the process will indicate the relationships between the several kinds of atoms and their individual influences on the physical properties in a clear and direct fashion. A consideration of the problem suggests a surprising similarity between the mechanisms of nitride hardening and of age-hardening. It is now generally understood that age-hardening may take place by one of two distinct processes, the first involving the precipitation of a finely dispersed phase and the other being concerned with the modifica-tion of an existing phase. Following much the same line of reasoning, two theories of nitride hardening have been suggested. The first expla-nation, which has been generally discussed, particularly by Fry,1 states in brief that the presence of aluminum causes the precipitation of alumi-num nitride during nitriding and that this finely dispersed phase is the primary cause of hardening. The second explanation, which has not been published but which has been freely discussed by those interested in the problem, postulates the substitution of aluminum atoms for certain of the iron atoms in the several iron-nitrogen phases in the same manner that the substitutional iron-aluminum solid solution is formed. it is an established fact that the collecting properties of xanthates and anionic collectors are dependent on the hydrocarbon chain length. This is ascribed to the greater adsorption densities caused by increasing the xanthate chain length. As batch flotation tests showed similar trends for amines, an investigation of the adsorbing properties of amines was undertaken. Because earlier investigations showed adsorption densities for dodecylamine salts on quartz varying as much as 20 times under apparently similar conditions,1-4 it was decided to make a survey of the changes in adsorption density due to the drying conditions of the quartz.
