Coal reserves of the Rocky Mountain area are vast and are more than adequate to meet significantly increasing demands in the immediate future. Practically all of the increase in coal demand for the next decade or so will be in the electric power utility sector. All ranks of coal are available in the area, and from a technological viewpoint, all are suitable for electric power generation. Location of economically recoverable coal deposits, location of generating plants with respect to power demand areas and sources of cooling water, and availability and price of other fuels are the major factors which, individually or in combination, will determine the ultimate selection of Western coal deposits to be developed for electric power generation. The low sulfur content of most western coals and the non-urban location of many power plants should tend to minimize problems of air pollution. If projections for nuclear power prove correct, increases in demand for Rocky Mountain area coals beyond about 1980 will depend primarily on the extent of commercial development of synthetic fuel processes. Current research activities on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels are promising. Most western coals range in rank from lignite through high-volatile bituminous coals and are particularly amenable to conversion. Vast reserves of Rocky Mountain coals have long lain dormant primarily because of their remoteness from major market areas. Recently, however, innovations in coal transportation and electric power transmission methods, combined with unprecedented demands for electric power in the West, have resulted in large-scale development of some of these coals. In the past few years, announcements of coal mine openings and transportation plans in the Southwest have been filled with superlatives: The Navajo mine in northwest New Mexico is expected to be the largest mine in the country in the near future. The largest single coal agreement ever made provides for coal shipment from northeast Arizona to Nevada via the largest and longest coal-slurry pipeline ever used. An 1100-mile haul of coking coal from northern New Mexico to California by unit train began last year. It is the purpose of this report to evaluate the coal resources of the Rocky Mountain area, and to project their potential utilization. In projecting energy demand levels on a national basis, the Bureau of Mines has developed some rather complex techniques to cope with uncertainties. Using these same techniques, an estimate has been made of consumption of Mountain area coal in 1980. No attempt was made to estimate coal consumption beyond 1980, but new market potentials are discussed briefly. The present and potential coal-producing fields of the Rocky Mountain area are in six states comprising the Mountain Region - Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. For more than 200 years zeolites have been familiar minerals to geologists and mining engineers as minor, but ubiquitous constituents in vugs and fractures of most basalt and traprock formations. More than 35 different species have been recognized including several, such as chabazite, erionite, mordenite, and faujasite, whose adsorption properties rival those of many synthetic molecular sieves. Igneous occurrences of this type have never been mined on a commercial scale; they are generally small and low grade, and they commonly contain as many as four zeolite minerals, along with small quantities of calcite, quartz, and other silicate minerals. Their economic beneficiation to monomineralic zeolite products has also not been achieved and, for the most part, industrial applications of zeolites have relied primarily on synthetic molecular sieves that were crystallized from hydrous aluminosilicate gels. ALTHOUGH many physical properties of superlat-tices have been studied intensively, relatively little attention has been paid to their mechanical properties until recently. Even for the well-known transformation in 0 brass, the effect of the transformation on plastic behavior has only lately been extensively investigated.''' A partial analysis of dislocation structure in superlattices has been given by cottrel13 and his theory agrees well with the experimental results on CU3AU.4,5 His analysis, however, is implicitly limited to low-temperature effects, since it does not include the behavior of dislocations at temperatures high enough for diffusion, and hence climb, to occur. The work of Herman and Brown2 on the creep of 0 brass indicates that important effects occur under such conditions, and consequently, the theory should be extended to include them. Such high-temperature effects cannot be observed in Cu3Au, since it disorders below the temperature at which diffusion occurs at a reasonable rate. There are materials of the same structure, however, such as Ni3A1, which retain their order up to, or close to, the melting point. GEOMETRY OF THE COMMON SUPERLATTICES The two best-known ordered structures are the 0 brass type, B2, shown in Fig. 1, and the Cu3Au type, Ll2, shown in Fig. 2. In the B2 structure the (000) and (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) sites are different in that they are occupied by different types of atoms. The symmetry of the structure is then lowered from a body-centered cubic, A2, in which the sites are equivalent, with atoms located randomly in the sites, to simple cubic. This lowering of symmetry has the consequence that two types of regions may occur within a crystal: regions where A atoms are in the (0, 0, 0) sites, and regions where they are in (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) sites. The boundary between two such regions will contain bonds between like atoms, and be a surface of higher energy. These regions are known as antiphase domains and the boundary as antiphase boundary. In the B2 structure, boundary formed during the ordering process should disappear as a result of domain growth, since any domain growing to the boundary of two others will join one and engulf the other.' In any well annealed crystal, only a single domain should exist, with antiphase boundary present only in connection with dislocations, as discussed below. The L1, structure is related to the A1 (face-centered cubic) in much the same way as the B2 is to the A2. The face-center sites are occupied by A atoms, and the corner sites by B atoms. The symmetry is again lowered to simple cubic, and antiphase domains can exist. In this case, however, there are four initially equivalent sites in the unit cell: (0,0,0), (0, 1/2, 1/2), (1/2,0, 1/2) and (1/2, 1/2, 0). In the ordered structure any one may be occupied by a B atom and the other three by A atoms. Thus four types of antiphase domains can occur in this structure. This is sufficient to permit a metastable "foam structure" to exist within a crystal.''7 Antiphase boundaries along three different planes are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.* *The presence of a layer of disordered material between antiphase domains, as suggested by Jones and Sykes8 does not seem likely. Such a layer would be a region of unnecessarily high energy which could readily be reduced by the formation of the type of boundary discussed here.__________________________________________________________ The notation (111) [110] means a boundary lying along a (111) plane between antiphase regions related by a 1/2 [I10] translation. It may be seen in Figs. 3 and 4 that an antiphase boundary usually results in incorrect nearest neighbors (shown connected by braces). The object of this paper is to record and interpret field and laboratory observations made by the writers during five years of study of the barite deposits of North Carolina. Deposits of barite are known to occur in three localities in North Carolina (Fig. 1) two of which—the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain —contain material of economic value. The Hot Springs area begins near Bluff, some 6 miles south of Hot Springs, and continues northeast by Stackhouse; a total length of 7 miles. The Kings Mountain deposits lie along a belt that extends from the north end of Crowders Mountain in a southwestward direction, along the east side of this and Kings Mountain, to Kings Creek, South Carolina. The third locality is 3½ miles southeast of Hillsboro, Orange County, a short distance west of the highway leading from Hillsboro to Chapel Hill. It is not known when barite was first discovered in North Carolina, but production from the Hot Springs area began some 50 years ago. The state has never produced large quantities of barite—usually there have been less than three producers—and definite figures are not available, but reasonably reliable estimates indicate a total production of 300,000 tons. From 1901 through 1920 barite mining was on a seemingly prosperous basis and a large tonnage was shipped from the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain areas. With the depression of 1920 the industry began to decline and production practically ceased in 1926. Geology of the Barite Areas In the Hot Springs area barite is found in the Max Patch granite of Archean age and the Snowbird formation of Cambrian age. The Max Patch granite is of two varieties, one gray to whitish and the other red. The gray granite is coarse, at times porphyritic, and composed of quartz, orthoclase and plagioclase feldspar, with a little biotite and muscovite. The red granite is also coarse and differs from the other only in having conspicuous pink and red feldspar. Both varieties have been much metamorphosed and weathered in places, so that they contain secondary

Energy conservation has been the keyword in many plant expansions. Far many years, most of the phosphate industry has been dry grinding their phosphate rock. Agrico Chemical in Florida has recently been evaluating the wet grinding of phosphate rock, a process which eliminates a pre-dry stage for mill feed while allowing higher through- puts. This same company also plans to open a new phosphate facility in Louisiana that will use wet grinding in both ball mills. The Eveleth Expansion Co.'s Fairlane concentrator will have the largest rod and ball mills in the US mining industry. The plant will consist of three lines, each with one rod mill and one ball mill, and will process 464 ltph. The rod mills will be 15 x 20% ft, drawing 2035 hp. The ball mills will be 17 x 41½ ft, drawing 6900 hp and driven by dual 3000- hp motors. The plant is scheduled for startup in the fall of 1976.

That variations in the humidity of the air and in the moisture content of a mixture of broken solids being separated electrostatically cause trouble is not new.' Much of the reputation for unreliability commonly ascribed to the electrostatic separation processes is probably due to this one factor alone. Some operators dry thoroughly before separating; and while this is good in many instances, there are others in which it is not the remedy for trouble. Some mixtures behave best in very dry air and with the mixtures fed to the separator while hot to reduce the adsorbed water content. On the other hand, an overdried mixture on coming to equilibrium with more humid air, has been known to take up moisture selectively on one family of particles, as of coal in the presence of slate and clay, and give sharper electrostatic separation. From these observations it is concluded that there is a permissible moisture content for a particle and also for the atmosphere surrounding it, if in equilibrium, at which the particle will have a conductivity or cntact potential2-4 that is ideal for electrostatic separation. This permissible moisture content varies between a wide range of limits for the different materials that are are and with the kind of electrostatic separating process used. Water can be present as a result of adsorption and condensation from the atmosphere, as an accumulation before or during mining, or as a residue from a previous process step. The water may exist as a liquid film or as an adsorbed layer of vapor. If the water exceeds permissible limits it must be removed. Its state determines the method. Drying by evaporation is necessary for adsorbed water, for part of the liquid-film water (that is, up to several percent of the dry weight), and for free water in the internal structure. Large water contents may be removed by drainage Or filtration. At just what point mechanical removal should cease and drying by evaporation begin depends upon the method of mechanical removal and its cost. Particles can also be separated according to their differences in dielectric constant when suspended in a liquid of intermediate dielectric constant. Recovery of this liquid presents a a problem' Permissible Moisture The adsorbed moisture on the outer surface of minerals can be quickly removed or replaced. Accordingly, in speaking of adsorbed moisture contents, either that of the solid or that of the surrounding air may be considered, the two values being connected by a distribution coefficient which varies with the temperature. However, such a condition does not necessarily exist in processes where an initially dry material is suddenly introduced into an atmosphere having a partial pressure of water vapor or where a moist material is suddenly introduced into a dry atmosphere. Automatic recording of the radioactivity of the earth's formations provides a log of relative intensities that, if properly interpreted, can be applied to oil-field engineering. Production, engineering, and geological departments regard the radioactivity log as a forward step in the securing of more conclusive information for successful well completions. Explanations of the technique, together with some of the problems to which radioactivity logging have been applied, are presented in this paper. Introduction Those responsible for the completion of new oil and gas wells, or with planning workover operations on old wells, have followed closely the development of radioactivity well logging because they are interested in reducing the number of unknowns that usually are present in such work. Many operators have made use of the log, or are acquainted with at least one of the applications, but it is unlikely that any one operator is familiar with all of the many applications that are possible. The purpose of this paper is to present a representative example of each of the many applications, wherever the information has been released by an operator, and to illustrate by hypothetical examples other applications, releases for which have not been given. In this way, it is hoped that a better understanding of the scope of this new engineering tool may be obtained. Athough the literature contains many references that describe in detail the theory, development, and application of radioactivity well logging, a brief discussion of the technique may be helpful to those who are investigating the subject for the first time, All rocks contain radioactive material in varying concentrations. In general, shales contain relatively more radioactive material than sandstones or limestones. These radioactive materials disintegrate with time into other materials of lower atomic weight, and in that process of disintegration the rocks are emitting many rays, the most penetrating of which is the gamma ray. The intensity of emission of the gamma ray is proportional to the quantities of radioactive materials present. A higher rate of emission would be observed, therefore, opposite a shale than opposite a sandstone or limestone. Since measurable intensities of gamma rays are capable of penetrating as many as five concentric strings of casing, and as the gamma-ray intensity is relative to the formations, the measurements of variations in gamma-ray intensities offer a means of identifying cased-off formations in their proper stratigraphic sequence. TEe Gamma-ray Curve The measurement of gamma-ray intensi ties is accomplished by means of an ioniza-tion chamber that consists of a heavy cylinder, about 3 ft. long, that contains two insulated electrodes and is Med with an inert gas under high pressure. Using specially del'eloped titanium nitride crucibles and a pressurized syslem, it has been possible to determine the solzibilitv of liquid calcium in liquid iron and iron-base alloys. At 2925°F the solubility is 0.032 wt pet Ca in pure iron. The solubility is increased by aluminum, carbon, nickel, and silicon additions, and lowered by additions of gold. An inflection in the calcium-solubility curve occurs as carbon is added to iron. At approximately 0.87 Wt pet Ca the CaC, phase replaces liquid calcium, and the calcium concentration de- creases as more carbon is added to the iron. The maximum solubility, 0.36 wt pet Ca, was obtained in iron containing 10.5 wt pet Si. The data have important implications regarding the use of calcium in process metallurgy, as well as providing an interesting test of theories of metallic solutions. Reasonably good agreement is found with theories of Alcock and Richardson and of Wagner, and criteria are suggested which permit these theories to be applied more readily to systems of this type. AT the present time relatively little is known about the factors influencing solubility in liquid metals. Information of this type is important for such matters as the control of impurity levels in liquid metals, the use of magnesium in ductile-iron production, and the use of liquid-metal alloys as fuels and coolants in nuclear power plants. One important example of restricted solubility concerns the extent to which liquid calcium will dissolve in liquid iron. This is a matter of considerable interest in view of the strong potential of calcium for removing certain impurities in steel,. as well as the ability of calcium to desulfurize, inoculate, and produce spheroidal graphite in cast irons.' Since ferrous materials normally contain other elements in addition to iron, the interactions of third elements with the Fe-Ca system are of interest. In view of the foregoing, this investigation was conducted to determine the solubility of liquid calcium in liquid iron and the effects of various third elements upon the solubility. For reasons of theoretical and engineering importance, the elements investigated were aluminum, carbon, gold, nickel, and silicon. Numerous attempts were made in the early part of the present century to determine the solubility of calcium in both liquid iron and steel, employing a variety of open-melt and closed bomb-type systems.2-4 From the results of these tests Wever concluded that calcium is insoluble in liquid and solid iron.5 These investigations were unsatisfactory in that they failed to insure the presence of a liquid layer

The mechanical behavior of a niobium (columbium)TUNG alloy containing 20 wt pet Ta. 15 wt pet W, and 5 wt pct Mo has been studied in the temperature range 77° to 423°K. All specitrzens tested, apart from those into which oxygen was introduced deliberately, were fully recrystallized at 1500°C, had an average grain diameter of approximately 0.03 mm, and a combined carbon, ox-vgen. nitrogen, and hydrogen content of not not more than 250 ppm The meckatnical behavior of this alloy was found to be similar in seine respects to that of unalloyed bcc transilion metals. Both yield and flow stresses were sensililae to changes in deformation rate and both increased rapidly as the temperature was lowered below 150°C. A detailed examination revealed, however, that most of the temperature dependencc of the yield stress could be accounted for by the temperature dependence of the elaslic, modulus, whish is not true of the unualloyed metals. In lension at moderate strain rates, the trunsition fvom ducfile to hvittle behavior occurred just belour room teunperature bur incveasing the oxygen content from 190 to 200 pptn raised the transition temperature to about 4000K. TUNGSTEN and molybdenum have been found to be very effective high-temperature solid-solution strengtheners of niobium, but the amounts of these elements that can be added are limited if the alloy is to retain useful room-temperature ductility. It has been shown, however, that partial replacement of niobium with tantalum lowers the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of such alloys and allows larger additions of molybdenum and tungsten to be made. Some of the high-temperature properties of niobium alloys containing these elements have been reported by Bartlett et al.,' and the work presented here describes the low-temperature behavior of one of these, a solid-solution alloy containing, by weight, 20 pct Ta, 15 pct W, and 5 pct Mo. The elastic modulus, the temperature and strain-rate dependence of the yield and ultimate tensile stresses, and strain-hardening effects are discussed and compared with those of unalloyed niobium. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was produced from a 6-in.-diameter, double arc-melted ingot. This was can-extruded at about 1150°C to a 3-in.-diameter billet, and after annealing for 1 hr at 1345°C the billet was heated to 1315OC and part rolled and part forged to 0.5-in.-thick plate. THE Geophysics Education Committee has devoted several years to a consideration of the problem of training geophysicists. Past reports have dealt largely with fact finding and with the discussion of particular aspects of geophysical education. In the present report it is proposed to review the subject more comprehensively. This involves the question of what educational qualifications the geophysicist of the highest professional standards should possess, and the related question of what changes must be effected in existing educational institutions in order that prospective professional geophysicists may obtain instruction of the desired quality. The type of geophysicist here contemplated is one familiar with what is known already in the several branches of earth physics, and capable not only of following contemporary progress in any of these branches, but of contributing to that progress in a research capacity. Geophysics in its broadest sense, as has been emphasized repeatedly by this Committee, is the study of the physics of the earth and of terrestrial processes. This includes both the static and the dynamic characteristics of the gaseous, the liquid, and the solid portions of the earth, as well as its gravitational, thermal, and magnetic and electrical manifestations. Some branches of earth physics have been cultivated but slightly; others have reached an advanced state of development. Those branches whose development is sufficient to warrant explicit recognition in the form of organized Sections of the American Geophysical Union are: geodesy, seismology, tectonophysics, and volcanology, dealing with the rock constituents of the earth; oceanography and hydrology with the aqueous constituents; meteorology with the atmospheric constituents; and terrestrial electricity and magnetism with the electromagnetic manifestations. At present, instruction on the professional level in any of these branches of earth physics can be obtained in but few universities in North America. In most institutions where such instruction is undertaken different subjects are given in different and independent departments. Geodesy and hydrology are taught, if at all, as a part of civil engineering. The so-called "paraffin dirt" of the Gulf Coast oil fields has been considered an indication of the possible presence of oil and gas, and not a few wells have been brought in solely on the basis of such evidence. In a sense, it may be empirically justified as evidence of the presence of oil or gas, though it cannot be said to be infallible. If the writer is correctly informed, its association with oil and gas was pointed out by Lee Hager some years ago, and while it is commonly mentioned by geologists and operators in conversation, no discussion seems to have found its way into print. The present interpretation is based on laboratory study rather than on field investigation, and is put forth with the hope of stimulating discussion which shall lead to more complete understanding. The term "paraffin dirt" has been applied to soils with a peculiar texture, which has been described as "curdy" or "rubbery." When moist, the material breaks much after the fashion of "green" cheese. It is rubbery under compression, but does not resemble rubber in tenacity or cohesion. When dry, the material ranges from hard clods to a horny mass of high tensile strength. The shrinkage in drying is very great, especially in the hornlike matter. The moist material ranges in color from dark brown in the specimens rich in organic matter to grayish in specimens containing more inorganic matter. All of the specimens studied were readily attacked by molds, which in some cases grew in great profusion on the samples. Samples exhibited a rather characteristic "swampy" or "mucky" odor when wet, and a characteristic odor of humic soils when moist. If the material is brought into suspension in water, very fine sand settles out and may be recovered by successive washing and decantation. The sand is almost entirely quartz, but contains occasional fragments of feldspar—more or less kaolinized and iron-stained. Practically all of the sand passes through a 100-mesh screen and the grains are extremely sharp —possibly below the limit of rounding. A flocculent mud, of clay and organic matter, remains in suspension for days. Some material is taken into solution in the water, imparting a slight tendency to froth when vigorously shaken. The results of partial analyses of four samples of "paraffin dirt," and, for comparison, one of a coastal plain soil are given in Table I.

A RECENT demand for some form of panoramic display of an important railway line, showing its branches, connections, and terri tory controlled by it, revealed to the writer the advantages of' a topographical model or relief map fix this purpose. Hitherto, maps of this nature have been used chiefly for scientific and geographical purposes, and confined to a comparatively narrow field of service. They deserve to become more popular and to have their advantages better understood. Much has been written and accomplished in this direction by Prof. Lesley, Messrs. Harden, Moulten, de Mendonca Cortez, and others; but I believe their pub lished descriptions of the methods employed in the construction of these models are confined to those used by themselves. It is the writer's aim to present in condensed form these various methods, and some suggestions of practical value as to the most economical course of procedure, as well as to mention some of the uses that may be made of the results obtained Methods of Construction.—Many different materials have been prepared and used in the preparation of relief maps, such as metal, clay, plaster, gypsum, wax, putty, Card-board, papier-mache, wood, and compositions of varions kinds, with results more or less success ful : wood, however, in the writer's experience, has been found to be by far the most satisfactory, combining the advantages of stability, accuracy and ease of handling. The following is a brief description of several of the methods used in constructing topographical models : When clay, wax, putty, compositions or materials of a plastic nature are used, the operator carries his work up from its base by means of measurements or by the eye, manipulating and shaping the material as best he can, ac cording to such features of his subject as he wishes to delineate. This process requires remarkable skill, and given this, will probably fall short even then of an approximation to accuracy; lacking essential elements of detail nil over the work and exactness, particularly in position and elevation of the most important points in the territory mapped. The critical phenomena have been studied during the past century but our knowledge of the critical temperatures and pressures of complex hydrocarbon mixtures still is very limited. The critical temperatures and pressures of pure substances have been examined in large num-bers,20 and in great detail.11,17 No experimental determinations of the critical phenomena have been reported on such complex hydrocarbon systems as a reservoir fluid. The critical temperature is defined by Taylor18 as follows: "there is some temperature for each gas above which the gas cannot be liquefied. This temperature is called the critical temperature." The critical pres-sure of a pure substance is the vapor pressure at the critical temperature. It should be noted that these definitions refer to a given substance in the pure state and do not mean that the pure substance cannot be liquefied in the presence of a second constituent. The normal procedure for obtaining the critical temperature of a substance is to heat it in a glass tube 1,20 under pressure until the meniscus between the liquid and vapor phase disappears, although other methods, especially for mixtures, have been used. 11,14 However, when considering oil and gas reservoirs, it is more enlightening to consider a critical phe-nomenon that occurs when a mixture of oil and gas are compressed at a reservoir temperature until the meniscus disappears because the two phases become equal in composition. This conception, along with erroneous applications of the definition of the critical phenomena of a pure substance to that pure substance when it is part of a complex mixture, has caused confusion even among persons familiar with the classical theories.

Long experience with underground mining inspired the unusual idea of using an underground crusher-conveyor system as a substitute for surface haulage at the Cananea open-pit copper mine in Sonora, Mexico. Now implemented and working well, the system has born out the expectations of its originator, Cia. Minera de Cananea S.A. de C.V., that it would effect substantial cuts in the high cost of haulage. The Cananea deposit is a large, low-grade orebody above the mined-out Colorada pipe which was once one of the largest high-grade underground deposits in the district. Present facilities at the pit consist of: (1) A large open-pit mine capable of moving 80,000 tons of material per day with a shovel-truck, underground crusher and belt conveyor haulage system. (2) A 25,000-tpd concentrator equipped for four stages of crushing, rod mill-ball mill grinding with cyclone classification, and flotation in conventional machines. (3) A dump leaching process producing 1 million lb of copper per month in a tin-can scrap precipitation plant. (4) A two-reverberatory, six-converter smelter which can make 140 tons of blister copper per day. (5) A well-integrated contingent of supporting departments running the gauntlet from housing to power generation.

IN Ohio, the annual output of coke made from native coals has averaged not more than 70,000 tons, or about enough to run a 200-ton blast furnace. Raw coal locally mined from the Sharon, or No. 1, bed was used for iron smelting in Mahoning furnace at Lowellville, Mahoning Co., as early as 1846. This practice was continued in the Youngstown district until the coal became scarce and the Connellsville coke more popular. At present, the Sharon bed contributes a part of the fuel for the production of ferrosilicon iron at Jackson, Jackson Co. About one-third native coal and two-thirds soft coal are used. In this state, coke, on a commercial basis, was first made in Jefferson County probably about 1861 or 1862. The coals used were the Steubenville Shaft, or Lower Freeport, and the Strip Vein or Middle Kittanning. The practice, however, was discontinued before 1880 because of the competition of superior foreign cokes. Beehive ovens, later built at Leetonia, Columbiana Co., were operated for only a few years; the coal used at this place is the Lower Kittanning or No. 5. In a desultory way, slack from the Pittsburgh coal has been coked at a few places in eastern Ohio, and attempts, either for experimental or for commercial purposes, have been made in other parts of the State. Small quantities of coke were made from the Upper. Freeport coal at Salineville, Columbiana Co., and near Nelsonville, Hocking Co.; the results were poor. Tests were made of the Middle Kittanning coal near Zanesville, Muskingum Co., at Moxahala Furnace, Perry Co., and at Washington Furnace, Lawrence Co.; the cokes were all high in sulfur and ash. Attempts were made to coke the Clarion coal at Vinton Furnace, Vinton Co.; a small battery of molding ovens and a pile of high-sulfur coke yet remain to tell the story. The Pittsburgh coal was coked on a commercial scale at Utley and at Lathrop, Athens Co.; but the operations were not successful and were soon abandoned.

A BRIEF study of the effects of material and processing variations upon the tensile properties of steel formed from mixtures of iron and carbon was made in order to provide information regarding the .properties obtainable in iron-carbon compacts as influenced by forming pressure, sintering temperature, and graphite particle size. Sintered steels formed from mixtures of iron and graphite have been studied by Stern,1 who investigated the effect of various percentages of graphite on compacts formed from electrolytic iron that were repressed and heat-treated after sintering. A further study, by Stern and Greenberg,2 is concerned with the heat-treatment of steels formed by the carburization of iron compacts, and Margolies3 has reported work on the simultaneous sintering and carburization of iron-powder parts. Glauch4 investigated the effect of various types of graphite on the properties of iron-carbon powder alloys but did not determine the effect of different particle sizes of the same graphite alloyed with different types of powder. In the investigation reported in this paper, powders typical of those produced by electrolytic deposition and the decarburization of shotted steel scrap were used. The powders were mixed by tumbling in a jar mill with graphite powder ground to an average particle diameter of 2, 4, 6, and 16 microns (as determined by microscopic measurement). The properties of the iron and graphite powders are presented in tabular form as Table I. In order to obtain the maximum information from a minimum number of test specimens, the study was divided into two sections with one set of specimens treated identically in each section as a basis for comparison. In the first section, iron powder produced by the shotting and subsequent decarburization of scrap steel was mixed with 2-micron graphite powder, pressed at 50,000, 100,000, and 200,000 psi, and sintered in hydrogen at 1200°C for the periods of time ranging from 15 to 120 minutes. In the second section of the investigation, electrolytic iron powder was mixed with graphite of an average particle diameter of 2, 4, 6, and i6 microns, pressed at 100,000 psi, and sintered at temperatures ranging from 1000° to 1200°C. for periods of time of 30 to 180 minutes. By following this procedure an indication of the effect of the following variables upon the density and tensile properties of iron-carbon powder compacts was obtained: (I) forming pressure, (2) sintering time, (3) particle size of graphite powder, (4) sintering temperature, (4) type of iron powder.

Flotation plant simulation, a relatively recent methodology in mineral processing, is defined and corresponding uses are discussed. Typical simulation structures are compared. Current problem areas exist although these are not insurmountable. Following a brief state of the art discussion, the N. I. M. simulation program is reviewed. In general, digital plant simulation is expected to be of substantial benefit in the near future.

Uranium ore was first discovered in the Edgemont district of the southern Black Hills in the summer of 1951. The discovery was not made known for some time, but after the news leaked out prospecting became intense, and several hundred claims were staked in the spring of 1952. The Hot Springs Sub Office of the Atomic Energy Commission was established at that time and airborne radiometric surveys were commenced by the Government and by private companies. During the succeeding summer another important discovery was made by private airborne surveys in the northern Black Hills, and the area favorable for uranium ore was expanded many times. Between that summer of 1952 and the present, many individuals and groups have explored, developed, and exploited their claims until now uranium ore is produced in significant quantities and substantial reserves have been developed. The Black Hills portion of the geologic map of the U. S. issued by the U. S. Geological Survey is shown in Fig. 1. Sedimentary formations are exposed as a series of cuestas and hogbacks in a roughly annular pattern with the older sediments resting on the pre-Cambrian core, which is exposed in the eastern and southern portions of the dome.
