The Bessemer process is one of the most interesting methods of making steel. At one time it was by far the most important. In recent years, however, it has steadily lost ground to the open-hearth process. The forces working against this method of stccl-making are partly economic and partly metallurgical.1 In this paper, dealing as it does with the control of the process, the metallurgical factors alone will be considered, although it is obvious that economic factors must play a part in determining the ultimate status of the Bessemer process. This discussion has been limited in another respect—it deals primarily with the acid Bessemer process in bottom-blown converters, although much of the information is applicable to basic and side-blown converters. The fact that open-hearth steel has superseded Ressemer steel to a large extent has tended to create an impression that Bessemer steel is inferior. As a matter of fact, Bessemer steel is actually superior to open-hearth for many applications.2 There are, however, definite metallurgical limitations to the use of Bessemer steel, resulting largely from two factors: (1) the physical properties conferred by nitrogen and phosphorus, and (2) the variability from blow to blow. These, of course, are not entirely independent, since some of the variability covered in the second item is undoubtedly due to nitrogen. But the variability is also caused by other factors. One of these is the relatively small size of the Bessemer heats. Because of this, a given shipment of Bessemer steel is more likely than a shipment of open-hearth steel to contain the product of several heats, each with its own distinctive and slightly different characteristics. Added to this is the fact that the refining of Bessemer steel proceeds so rapidly that the timing of the end point is limited to a matter of seconds, whereas the finishing period in the open hearth extends over a period of one or two hours and the timing of the end point may vary by several minutes without seriously affecting the product. There is no doubt that this has contributed to the variability of Bessemer steel and has led to the use of open-hearth steel in many optional applications. That Bessemer steel may vary is not necessarily objectionable, and it may even prove an advantage, providing a precise control is available to secure the desired qualities for any specific application. With this in mind, a comprehensive research program was undertaken, one phase of which was directed toward securing more accurate control of the blow. The results have been encouraging, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe a method in which modern scientific instruments, based on photocells, are currently being employed to assist the blower. In the preparation of the paper upon " The Operation of Warwick Furnace, Pennsylvania, from August 27, 1880, to September 1,1885," presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, I purposely refrained from offering theories to explain the peculiarities of furnace operation, on the ground that it was better for those actively engaged in blast-furnace management to present records of operations, than for one more directly interested in blast-furnace engineering and construction to venture upon the sea of speculation as to causes. The manager of an iron-works naturally feels that he knows as much about his particular furnace or furnaces as any one else, and as Mr. Cook, after his close attention to and study of the Warwick furnace, was at that time unwilling to present theories, I felt a disinclination to assume more acumen than the manager.

THE Societá Auonima di Miniere e di Alti Fourni, familiarly known as the " Elba Company," works the rich ore-deposits of the Island of Elba under a long-term contract with the Italian Government. The ore-deposits are scattered over the eastern and southeastern coast; but as those parts of the island are not well provided with ports, the blast-furnaces were built at Portoferraio, the principal town of the island, situated on the northern shore, and possessing a magnificent natural harbor where even vessels as large as the battleships of the Italian navy can comfortably anchor. In the selection of Portoferraio. the cost of transporting the iron-ore from the different mines to the blast-furnaces has been reduced to a minimum, and shelter has been provided for the Company's flotilla of tugs and barges, as well as for the steamers carrying coal and pig-iron. The whole plant, of which a general view is given in Fig. 1, comprises 1. A discharging-pier with unloading-cranes. The ore and coal are transported from this pier by means of an aerial cable-rail¬way to the coal- and ore-storage yards. This cable-railway is supported by an iron bridge extending from the pier to the shore and by a wooden trestle extending from the shore to the yards. , 2. Blast furnaces, two in number, with all the accessory appa¬ratus, such as blowing-engines, dry purifiers, Cowper hot-blast stoves, hoists, etc. 3. Coke-ovens, two batteries, with coal-bin, crushers and boilers. 4. Engine-house containing the blast-engines and the electric generating-station. 5. Pumping-plant. 6. Narrow-gauge railways.

Abstract-Statistical studies have been carried out on structural geological data collected across a large zone of roof failure 600 m (1968 ft) wide and at least 800 m (2642 ft) long in the Greta coal seam at Aberdare East Colliery. Two swarms of hundreds 2 of minor, normal faults with throws commonly between 3 and 300 mm in the room and pillar workings are broadly coincident with roof failure. The faults have been classified into dip slip and oblique and strike slip types. Roof conditions have been classified into good; troublesome with subclasses scaly, heavy, gutter falls and wide, flat-roofed falls; and severely failed with subclasses very heavy roof, gutter falls and dome falls. Troublesome conditions are defined as those in which the height of the fall is less than or equal to 0.3 m, and severely failed conditions as those in which the fall height is greater than 0.3 m. Comparison of faults, roof conditions and mining rate on a shift basis indicates that faults and roof failure are much more important than machine breakdowns in reducing mining rate. The effect of faults on roof conditions has been quantified using a concept called the "zone of influence, " a rectangular area around a fault in which the fault has potentially deleterious effects. The spatial comparison of fault "zones of influence" with areas of roof failure using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient shows that, while normal dip slip faults do not appear to be associated with roof failure, oblique slip and strike slip faults appear to be associated with roof classed as severely failed. The "zone of influence" of an oblique slip fault may extend up to 3 m on each side of it in the headings and up to 1.14 m in the cut-throughs. The fault "zone of influence" has geomechanical implications for the design of mine openings and possibly represents the maximum length of a cantilevered roof beam likely to fail during mining, owing to a fault. Roof conditions could possibly be predicted in blocks of virgin coal if the type of fault could be identified in oriented drill cores.

WHEN the Age of Machinery was suddenly thrust upon civilization about the beginning of the 19th century, an unprecedented demand for mineral resources sprang up. This demand brought about the rapid development of the known ore deposits and the discovery of such other deposits as could be encountered by energetic and canny prospectors. Thus in the countries now reasonably accessible nearly all orebodies have been located except those which are totally concealed even from the eyes and "senses" of experienced and expert prospectors. The high rate of exhaustion of known ore deposits and the necessity of looking farther and farther ahead for raw materials as a matter of insurance on the stupendous capital outlays involved in mining, development, and conversion operations, have resulted in exceptional activity in three different fields of effort. The first is purely geographic. Prospectors are now penetrating the few hitherto inaccessible regions in the hope of stumbling upon exposed ore deposits or locating visible indications of their presence. The second is chemical. Industrial chemists and metallurgists are seeking to facilitate the exploitation of lower grade ores or to find methods of recovering valuable metals from common substances. In the third field of effort lie the activities of the economic geologist and the mining engineer, who endeavor to locate concealed ore deposits which would remain hidden from the prospector no matter how expert or conscientious he might be. Obviously the task which such a man must face is both exacting and indefinite, and the tools which he has heretofore been permitted to bring to it are, for the most part, abstract-a knowledge of certain fundamental principles and processes involved in the origin, occurrence, structure, and distribution of deposits of natural resources and of the rocks which form the environments of those deposits; and a process. of reasoning by analogy supplemented by the use of the diamond drill, or such artificial exposure as -the test pit, trench, shaft, or tunnel.

Al3Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum was found to exhibit good Charpy impact toughness and little notch sensitivity even though its room-temperature tensile elongation parallel to the whiskers is only 2 pct. This impact behavior was maintained d liquid nitrogen temperature (-196"C). It is postulated that this behavior is due primarily to the presence of the continuous aluminum matrix which provides sufficient 10calized ductility in the vicinity of the crack tip to absorb considerable energy from the advancing crack. The impact behavior of Al-Alni was found to be quite anisotropic. Of six orientations studied, the transverse orientation having the notch normal to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the lowest impact energy, whereas the transverse orientation having the notch parallel to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the highest impact energy. A significant differnce was noted between the impact behavior of material containing needlelike whiskers and that containing bladelike whiskers. Only two of the six orientations studied exhibited complete fracture for the material containing needlelike whiskers. On the other had, most of the specimens containing bladelike whiskers exhibited complete fracture. It was postulated that the bladelike whiskers block transverse flow, thus reducing the amount of plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip. One of the more significant advantages of composite materials is the prospect of combining high strength with toughness. In general, toughness is associated with materials which exhibit considerable ductility and can deform plastically in the presence of a stress concentration. Very strong materials which resist plastic deformation generally exhibit low toughness. At first glance, then, it would appear as though strength and toughness are mutually incompatible so that useful engineering materials would have to be a compromise between the two. One approach to the problem of combining the high intrinsic strength of ceramics with the toughness of metals was to mix them together to form a cermet. Unfortunately, the toughness of cermets was found to be rather disappointing. Whisker reinforcement of metals, however, appears to be a more promising approach. It has been demonstrated that whisker-reinforced metals produced by unidirectional solidification exhibit enhanced strength due to the presence of high strength nonmetallic whiskers. The total strain capacity of these composites in the direction of fiber alignment is limited to that of the fibers, the matrix being unable to carry the load once the fibers have failed. A characteristic, then, of whisker composites is low ductility in the direction of whisker alignment, on the order of a few percent elongation. This low elongation, which is usually associated with brittle behavior, should not be taken as an indication of low toughness. Such a material can exhibit significant ductility in directions other than parallel to the fibers7 and can therefore possess significant intrinsic toughness. Toughness in a fiber-reinforced metal is derived from several mechanisms. The first is due to the toughness of the matrix itself. A continuous ductile metal matrix can act as an effective crack arrest medium by undergoing localized plastic deformation. Cracks initiated from the surface of the composite or from a brittle fiber failure must travel through the matrix before reaching another brittle phase particle. A second crack arrest mechanism peculiar to fiber composites is due to the fact that, as a crack travels through the matrix and approaches a fiber, the plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip will result in loading of the fiber. This causes the matrix shear strength in the plastic zone to be apparently higher, thus extracting more energy from the crack and diverting the crack at an angle to the original direction of propagation. A third crack arrest mechanism occurs in fiber composites which exhibit a weak bond between fiber and matrix. The idea was proposed by Cook and Gordons that if a crack propagating transversely in a fiber composite were made to turn and run along the fibers by decohesion of the fiber-matrix bond, then toughness would be imparted by the blunting of the crack tip and the creation of new surfaces. The last mechanism, interfacial decohesion, is commonly noted in naturally occurring fiber composites such as wood, bone, and bamboo, and has been observed in man-made composites such as glass fiber-reinforced resins,g silica fiber-reinforced aluminum," laminated steel," and tungsten and silica fiber-reinforced electroplated copper.'' The first mechanism, crack arrest by plastic deformation in the matrix, has been noted in tungsten wire reinforced cast copper." The purpose of this investigation was to quantitatively assess the toughness of a whisker-reinforced metal as a function of orientation. Previous investigation considered only cracks propagating nominally perpendicular to the reinforcement. In this investigation, crack propagation in three mutually perpendicular directions as well as three intermediate orientations was investigated. The system chosen for study was the unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eu-tectic alloy which has a microstructure consisting of 10 pct by volume of A13Ni whiskers in a matrix of aluminum This material exhibits two different kinds of whisker morphology, depending upon the rate at which it is solidified.' An article on the subject of electrolytic zinc no longer needs to be preceded by an apology. The production of zinc by electrolysis is past the laboratory stage and has become an economic factor of considerable importance in the total production of zinc in the United States. The various methods of procedure to be followed fa the greatest economy of manufacture are fairly well known, consequently a detailed description of any method is no longer necessary or desirable. In this paper I shall endeavor to lay down some of the governing conditions in this industry, the relation of methods to ore deposits, freight rates, and sources of power supply. Power Points Assuming for a moment that, for the present at least, the electrolytic production of zinc will be confined to Those localities having developed water power, a glance at these powers so developed in the United States, with their relation to known zinc orebodies of economic size, will not be without interest. These must, of course, bear a close relation to the rapidly growing zinc production of the Coeur d'Alenes and of the Butte districts. Studies of the eyuilibrzum between ferrite and austenite with gas mixtures (CO + CO2 and H2 + CHe) have been used as a means of deducing the energy and vibrational entropy of carbon atoms in dilute interstitial Fe-C solutions. A simple model for dilute interstitial solutions is given which enables a solubility equation for the equilibrium between the gas mixtures and the solid to be deduced. This solubility equation is used to estimate the partial In this work measurements of the equilibrium between dilute solid solutions of carbon in iron and gaseous mixtures of CO2 + CO and CH4 + Hp have been analyzed using theoretical solubility equations deduced from a knowledge of the thermodynamic parameters of the gas mixtures and an appropriate model for the solid solution. The solubility equations are deduced by equating the chemical potential of carbon atoms in the gas thermodynamic functions of dilute Fe-C solutions from the measured equilibrium between the solid and the gas mixtures. It is shown that the vibra-tional entropy of a carbon atom in a and y iron is smaller than the corresponding entropy 01. a nitrogen atom in solid solution inferrite or austenite and that there is little difference between the vibrational entropies of both nitrogen and carbon atoms in ferrite and austenite. and solid phases. An analog computer model has been developed of a large, walking dragline. This model permits changes in the configuration of the dragline, or changes in its digging cycle, to be readily investigated on a computer. As a result, it is possible to determine ways of improving the dragline performance without having to carry out many expensive experiments on the actual machine. This model can also be used as a simulator for dragline operator training. INTRODUCTION The movement of large volumes of material is always a costly operation and the increasing trend towards the use of large capacity equipment does not necessarily produce the economy desired. This problem is of particular concern to the mining industry in its open-pit operations where large draglines are used to remove the overburden. Since this operation often forms a very large part of the total cost of open-pit mining it is particularly important that it be kept as economical as possible. This requires that the dragline be operated at its maximum possible productivity. In order to optimize the operation of a dragline it is desirable that a suitable model of the dragline be available for study. Once such a model is available the effects of changes in the configuration of the dragline, or changes in its digging cycle, could be readily investigated on a computer and methods of improving its performance could be determined without having to carry out expensive experiments on the actual machine. Such models would be of use not only to dragline users, but also to the manufacturers of draglines for design purposes. Presumably studies of this type could eventually lead to computer-con trolled stripping operations. As far as can be determined very little work1'2 has been done on the derivation of dragline models. Such models must be derived before work of the nature indicated in the previous paragraph can be carried out. As a small contribution to this field this paper describes work that has been carried out by the senior author during the past few years on the derivation of one such model. This model describes the drag, hoist and swing operations of a 35 cu yd, commercially available, walking dragline. This model was derived for use with an analog computer and can be used either for optimization studies, or for the training of dragline operators. DESCRIPTION OF DRAGLINE General: The particular dragline for which an analog computer model was developed is owned by the Great West Coal Company of Estevan, Saskatchewan. To gain an insight into the deviations from normal behavior caused by dip. a mathematical study has been made of single-fluid five-spot floods in dipping reservoirs for flooding techniques likely to be employed in such cases. Streamline patterns and sweep eficiencies are computed for a number of different cases, and the results, where possible, are presented in graphical form. An increase in sweep efficiency can be obtained by moving the central injection well updip, and the opti~num position is found for several cases. The applicnhility of the results is discussed. INTRODUCTION Because of the growing importance of water flooding in California and in other locations where large angles of dip are quite common, it is important to know at least some of the effects of dip on the performance characteristics of water floods in such instances. In the past, only reservoirs having relatively mild dips have been wateflooded. Consequently, little is known today as to the effect of dip on the performance characteristics of a flooding operation from the point of view of field experience; and because of the complexity of the problem, little, if anything, has been done on the problem from the point of view of theory. There are two distinct aspects of the role played by gravity in a flooding operation. The first is that of the preferential segregation of the reservoir fluids at the time when the flood is to commence. The second is the role that it may play in affecting the performance of the reservoir during the course of the flooding operation. In this paper the reservoir is assumed to be filled with only one fluid, so that there is no preferential segregation of reservoir fluids at the commencement of the flood. Moreover, the injected and in-place fluids are assumed to have the same characteristics, so that in effect we consider only a single-fluid problem. Single-fluid results have been used as a guide in the past for predicting and interpreting the behavior of regular five-spot floods in horizontal reservoirs. It is thought that single-fluid results might likewise be used for five-spot patterns in dipping reservoirs as a norm to which the effects of the multifluid problems might he referred.* In confining our attention to the single-fluid case, we therefore do not consider the preferential segregation of injected water in the oil bank, or of the oil bank in the unflooded zone. Instead we consider the deviation from the behavior of a horizontal five-spot which is caused by use of flooding techniques (i.e., the flow potential pattern at injection and production wells) likely to be employed during flooding operations in dipping reservoirs. In other words, we consider effects which are caused by the pattern of injection and production well pressures which we choose to apply. Performance characteristics are given for the five-spot spacing pattern as a function of two parameters; one is the ratio of gravity head to potential difference bctwccn the high updip injection well and the low downdip producer of the same five-spot, denoted by Rg; the second is the orientation of the five-spot pat-

A phase diagram of the uranium-columbium alloys is presented. The apparatus and the procedures used in obtaining the data are described. Data from which the diagram was drawn are given in tabular and graphic form. THE use of uranium in the production of energy from nuclear fission has given considerable im- petus to the investigation of the metal and its alloys. Accordingly, information concerning the phase diagrams of binary alloys of uranium with other elements is of interest to metallurgists engaged in nuclear-engineering activities. As a contribution to the knowledge of the binary alloys, the authors have attempted to establish the diagram of the uranium-columbium system. The reports of laboratories engaged in work for the Manhattan Engineering District and the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission contain a number of references to work on uranium-columbium alloys.

A NEW milestone in the progress of photography and subsurface exploration was reached when the Chief of Army Engineers announced the development of the NX borehole camera. In obtaining continuous undistorted cylindrical color pictures of dry or water-filled borings the device surpasses all other cameras designed for photographing interior surfaces of pipes, wells, and conduits. The usefulness of the camera and the unique projector that comes with it are at once apparent. To the geological, mining, and civil engineer alike it signifies the end of guesswork with respect to underground conditions that have eluded identification by conventional core-drilling methods. To the medical profession it may well signal new progress in photo optics which could result in cylindrical color photographs supplementing the X-ray and existing photographic methods used in exploratory surgery.

In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Because of this limited success, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. As a result of these calculations, it was concluded that autoradiograPhy is a rather insensitive technique to measure grain boundary segregation. The range (energies) of the emitted particles (ß and a) must be low, and the concentration of the radioactive speczes at the grain boundary must be (in general) two or three orders of magnitude greater than the concentration within the grain. Because of these very restricted conditions , the limited success of the technzque is not surprising. In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Sulfur segregation in iron1 and possibly polonium segregation in Pb-5 pct B1 2 alloys are the only autoradi-ography experiments that have demonstrated segregation to grain boundaries in metals without the formation of a second phase. Segregation to a boundary without the formation of a second phase is often called Gibbs' absorption and is discussed by McLean in Chapter 5 of Ref. 10. There are several394 experiments showing grain boundary diffusion of a radioisotope, but this type experiment is not representative of equilibrium between the concentration of an element at a grain boundary and that in bulk, so it will not be discussed in this paper. In an attempt to determine if temper embrittle ment of low-alloy steels was associated with segregation of antimony to grain boundaries, a program to use auto-radiography (using Sb-125) was initiated. Even though other measurements strongly suggest that segregation is occurring during embrittlement, no evidence of grain boundary segregation was observed in the auto-radiography experiments. An attempt was also made to detect segregation of carbon (using C-14) to grain boundaries in iron during slow cooling. There is again strong indirect evidence7 that segregation occurs during such a treatment, but the autoradiography experiment gave no evidence of such segregation. Because of the failure of these experiments and the general lack of success by our metallographic unit in measuring grain boundary segregation using autoradi-ography, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. MODEL SYSTEM The model system is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. It is a semi-infinite bicrystal with a single grain boundary perpendicular to the top face. The width of the grain boundary, W, is defined as the region to which segregation has occurred and it is assumed that this region is of constant composition. The assumption of an infinite dimension is for mathematical reasons but the results of such an analysis (as will be demonstrated later) are valid for even very small specimens. It also is assumed that the measurement is not limited by means of detecting the radiation (photographic emulsions, counters, and so forth) but that the means of detecting radiation is linearly sensitive to the radiation and has infinite resolving power. The distance y is the perpendicular distance from the center of the grain boundary to the point at which the background radiation is measured and x is the integration variable. CALCULATION FOR BETA PARTICLES Two values of the intensity of radiation will be calculated, the intensity at the center of the grain boundary and the intensity far from the grain boundary. The radiation at the center of the grain boundary can be calculated in the following way. Assume a grain boundary of width W having a uniform concentration equal to Cgb + Cb where CGb is the excess concentration of the element under consideration at the grain boundary and Cb is the bulk concentration. The intensity of radiation, IgB, at the center of the grain boundary, is a consequence of the amount of radioactive material, decay rate, absorption, and geometrical factors which can be represented mathematically by the following expression:

MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Processes in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carbonization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, frictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1, 2 Taggart,3 and Peele.4 Shape In general, coal differs in shape from its accompanying dirt throughout the range of commercial sizes. Coal, breaking into roughly cubical particles, contains a greater number of axes that are approximately the same length than does the dirt. The latter, consisting of pieces of slate and shale and lenses of pyrite, is flatter in nature. Further, flat coal often has a dirty, slaty appearance, even though of high quality. Mechanical pickers known as flat pickers, or "flatters," are widely used in the Pennsylvania anthracite region to remove flat coal .from the final clean coal. This practice greatly improves the appearance of the final market product. Flat pickers for removing impurities or flat coal ("flats") are usually installed on shaker screens, shaking conveyors, and chutes. In Fig. 1 three

THE deposit of rock salt along the shores of Lake Huron, in Canada, has been brought before the public during the last six months, in consequence of the developments made by the diamond drill at Goderich. It is likely to be of more than common interest in the future, since now actual operations have been commenced to exploit the deposit and work it by regular mining. The methods of mining rock salt being but little known in this country, it may be of interest to make a few general remarks in regard to them before entering, upon the description of this new mining enterprise. According to the conditions under which salt is found in nature, various methods have been resorted to, in course of time, to make it available for the human race. They consist in : A. Natural or solar evaporation. B. Artificial evaporation, either exclusively or in connection with the former. C. Mining the rock salt in its natural state, and converting it to a marketable product, if need be, by simply pulverizing it. Without going into the details of the various methods of making salt available in an economical point of view, dependent on its degree of purity, or on various local influences, we cannot refrain from. alluding to the general principles which influence the mining and manufacturing of salt in countries where they have been carried on for hundreds of years. ECONOMICAL CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESS. Salt being one of the articles of prime necessity, and one universally distributed throughout nature, it must always be sold at a comparatively low price. It would even be quoted in the market at prices far below those now ruling, if it were not for the high duties generally imposed upon it, for purposes of state revenues. But looking closer into the subject, it will be found that this duty is probably one of the least oppressive, although in some countries it exceeds sixfold the cost of profitable production.
