AT THE request of a committee of the Engineering Division,1 National Research Council, a study of the properties of boiler plate at various temperatures up to about 900° F. (482° C.) has been instigated. The following is a report of preliminary tests made on two grades of ½ -in. plate and includes a description of the apparatus used in the determination of the proportional limit. Detailed reference to the many published investigations in connection with the properties of steel at various temperatures will be omitted from this report. Suffice to state that results obtained for variation in tensile strength elongation, and reduction in area with temperature are in substantial agreement with the effects now generally considered to be correct. Comparison of proportional limit values with results obtained by other investigators will be found in the conclusions.

TWO types of automatic drilling controls, the Halliburton and the Hild, are now available and are coming into more or less general use in deep drilling. The primary function of both is to maintain a safe limit of torque on the drill pipe, this being accomplished by automatically controlling the weight or pressure on the cutting tool. Neither type will necessarily increase drilling speed, but by permitting advantage to be taken of "breaks" in the hole higher average cutting speed may be maintained. The control is essentially a safety device, and should be considered as such. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the merits of drilling controls, although the advantages over manual feed at the brake drum are obvious, but rather to point out some of the limitations. The Halliburton Control The Halliburton control is designed to operate during drilling through the agency of the draw works. Automatic and constant control of the torque on the bit is governed by clutches on the control itself, and the line shaft to drum shaft drives on the draw works. In operations other than drilling the control is simply a jackshaft between prime mover and draw works. It is, of course, adaptable to any type of power. Because control of the torque on the bit is dependent on the various ratios or clutch combinations available on the Halliburton control and the draw works, it follows that there are certain limitations in points of control. Table 1 shows the possible ratios which can be obtained with the control and a popular type of three-speed draw works, it being assumed that the highest possible gear combination—the combination which when engaged will suspend the least amount of weight—has a value of 1.00. According to the table there are "blind spots" in the series. This is true particularly among the lowest ratios, which are most used to suspend the major part of the weight when great depths are reached. Since the sudden revival of the air or gas-lift and its extensive use in the oil fields, many questions have arisen as to principles and as to their application under the conditions actually encountered in the field. Much has been written regarding both theory and practice, especially on the air-lift as applied to lifting water. Many statements have been made as to the use and benefits of the gas-lift, some of which are reasonable but many of which are unreasonable, many specialty makers claiming to have devices which operate in almost miraculous ways and even to generate energy nature never possessed. These claims are often based upon incomplete or inaccurate data. A review of the literature discloses many valuable articles, but it also discloses the need for setting out more clearly the different practical ends sought, and for working out specific engineering principles upon which to formulate the design and operation of gas-lifts to meet the desired ends within the limitations of field conditions. A check on some of the published information has revealed basic errors in the sources of data upon which conclusions have been predicated and has led the writers to doubt the value of a large part of the compiled data. The writers have concluded, therefore, that it will be opportune to direct discussion to the sources of error in the data now being collected, to recommend for consideration by the engineers some methods of collecting and correlating data, and to point out some of the factors relating to the application of the air-lift principle to oil production as dictated by the different economic ends sought, and the limitations of working conditions that may be met. Until these several considerations are clearly understood by the engineers, and the unreliable data have been sifted out and dependable data substituted, there seems little chance of evolving satisfactory engineering control for the air-lift. In the following pages no distinction will be made between gas-lift and air-lift, as they are generically the same.

The idea of making permanent magnets by sintering is not a new one, but until the introduction of the iron-nickel-aluminum permanent-magnet alloys there was little need for such a process. Permanent-magnet alloys in use up to the time of this development could be forged and machined to the exact size or shape required without too much difficulty. These new Fe-Ni-A1 alloys, which have become known as Alnico in this country, soon became very popular because of their superior magnetic properties, but when they were made by casting they did have some disadvantages when compared with the older type of permanent-magnet steels. Among these disadvantages were the following: 1. It was almost essential that they be cast to size, since they could not be readily forged or machined. The material could be ground but this was quite expensive, particularly for small magnets in large quantities. 2. The material had a large grain size and was mechanically weak. 3. Close tolerances could not be held and on small magnets this meant grinding almost the entire magnet. Because of the brittle nature of the material, there was considerable loss due to chipping and cracking during these grinding operations. 4. Because of its high aluminum content, the molten alloy had a high surface tension. It was difficult to prevent loss of aluminum by oxidation during the melting operation. In view of these difficulties it is not hard to understand why a process for sintering alnico was developed, or why sintered alnico has come into such widespread use in recent years. It might be well to qualify this by saying that it has come into widespread use for small magnets weighing 2 oz. and less, of the type shown on Fig. I. In this size range, sintered alnico has been able to compete in price with cast alnico. Magnets larger in size, of the type shown on Fig. 2, can be made but they do not compare favorably in price with the cast material. An idea of the range of sizes that have been produced is given by Fig. 3, which shows a small magnet weighing 0.006 oz. and a large magnet with a steel insert weighing 4 lb., both made from sintered alnico. SHORTLY after the middle of the nineteenth century, the invention of the regenerative open-hearth furnace and the development of the Bes-semer process stimulated a, rate of steel production whose magnitude created an unprecedented demand for pig iron. Revolutionary improvements in furnace design, auxiliary equipment, and operating technique enabled the blast furnace to keep abreast of the constantly increasing requirements of the steel mill. The development of improved blowing equipment, more adequate facilities for material handling, and particularly the general use of anthracite and coke to replace the physically weaker charcoal, led to a rapid expansion in both the height and volume of furnaces. Beyond a doubt,, however, the greatest single factor in blast-furnace improvement at this time was the use of the higher blast temperatures made available by the replacement of the recuperative iron pipe stoves by the regenerative Cowper brick stove. The increased blast tempera-ture not only resulted in greater output but also reduced fuel consumption far more than could be explained by the additional heat content of the blast. The progress of iron manufacturing was thus largely mechanical and thermal. Little attention was given tile chemistry of the process until the publication of the investigations of Sir Lowthian Bell.1 Bell's pains-taking experiments and investigations gave to the blast-furnace man his first real scientific conception of blast-furnace chemistry. Bell's recog-nition of the dual function of the carbon, the technical importance of reversible reactions and chemical equilibria, and his conception of the degree of oxidation of the carbon as shown by the analysis of the outgoing gases as a criterion of furnace efficiency, laid the foundation upon which has since been erected the structure of blast-furnace theory.

EFFECTIVE methods for determining grade and reserves of pegmatites in advance of mining have been developed in recent years. When intensive work began on the economic geology of pegmatites during the early years of World War 11, it was widely believed that grade and reserves could be estimated only in a most general way. The literature indicated that not all pegmatite deposits are unpredictable, but statements emphasizing unpredictability and irregularity seem to have been more widely accepted. Many standard references reflect the prevailing opinion that minerals: are unsystematic in their occurrence in pegmatites. Pegmatites have been described as "notorious for their irregular structure," and minerals within pegmatites as "irregularly distributed." "irregularly disseminated," of "erratic occurrence," "proverbially erratic in distribution," "characterized by extreme irregularity in ... size and distribution of the essential minerals, and variety and proportion of the accessory minerals," and "spotty.'"" Over many years, however, geologic techniques have been applied with increasing success to economic analysis of pegmatites. Investigations, chiefly since 1939, have shown that mineral distribution and structure of pegmatites are largely systematic and that detailed geologic study can be used to predict the size and shape of mineral deposits in pegmatites. Because the writers are most familiar with the pegmatites of the Black Hills, S. D., examples cited are from that area." Pegmatites mined in other dis- * All examples are described more cornpletely elsewhere.: tricts are similar to those in the Black Hills," and the techniques described here have been applied by geologists and engineers working in other districts. In actual practice few pegmatite mine operators attempt to make accurate estimates of grade and reserves in advance of mining. Many deposits are too small for mining except on a very small scale; few pegmatite mines have more than ten employes. Hence there is little systematic preparation for mining, and the capital outlay may be so small that only a general knowledge of reserves is necessary. Technical personnel are rarely employed by pegmatite mine operators to make such estimates. In the future, however, as capital outlay becomes larger, estimates of grade and reserves will have to be more accurate. Geologic Aspects of Determining Grade and Reserves Estimating grade and reserves requires that the type of pegmatite, the size and shape, and the internal structure be determined by detailed geologic mapping and careful mineralogic study. The wide variations in the texture and distribution of minerals within many pegmatite deposits make a thorough geologic study of this kind necessary before it is possible to decide what sampling methods should be used to determine mineral content or grade. Types of Pegmatites: The first step in economic appraisal of a pegmatite is to determine the min-eralogical and structural type. In general, pegmatites may be classified into two groups: 1) those in which component minerals are more or less evenly distributed throughout the entire body and show relatively minor variations in texture, and 2) those in which component minerals have been segregated into units with recognizable differences in texture, mineralogy. or both. Johnston" has classified these types of pegmatites as homogeneous and heterogeneous, respectively. Cameron et al.10 have used the terms ~inzoned and zoned for similar types. The difference between the homogeneous and heterogeneous types is of great commercial importance. Homogeneous pegmatites can seldom be mined where the products are concentrated by the hand methods now commonly used, but they have been mined in a few places where a milling process has

In preparing this paper the object has been to set forth facts relating to illumination problems, which, judging from the results realized in the iron and steel and other industries somewhat similar to mining, will tend toward furthering safety, production, and contentment of employees, as well as economy of operation in mines. By applying the principles of illumination with the assistance of modern appliances, the full benefits in efficiency may be derived from improvements already made in other details of mine operation. The lighting of a typical coal mine may be*divided into four distinct parts: 1, The lighting of the buildings about the top; 2, the lighting of the working faces; 3, general illumination at the bottom; and 4, special applications of lighting. The lighting of buildings about the top may be treated in the same manner as that of any other industrial plant, for we have a boiler room, an engine and generator room, a forge, a machine shop, and a hoist room. These can be well and efficiently lighted by the use of 100-watt tungsten-filament multiple lamps with proper reflectors so spaced and suspended that a power consumption of from ¼ watt per square foot in the boiler room to 1 watt per square foot in the machine shop is obtained. The methods that apply to this kind of lighting have been ably treated by a number of authors,' and for this reason a detailed discussion is unnecessary. The lighting of the working faces is usually done by means of portable lamps, of which there are four types in use: The oil torch, the acetylene Iamp, and the oil and the electric safety lamps. Laboratory flooding experiments on linear flow systerns indicated that high oil displacement, approaching that obtained from completely miscible solvents, can be attained by injecting a small slug of carbon dioxide into a reservoir and driving it with plain or carbonated water. Data are presented in this paper which show the results of laboratory work designed to evaluate this oil recovery process, particularly at reservoir temperatures above 100°F and in the pressure range of 600 to 2,600 psi. Under these conditions CO2 exists as a dense single-phase fluid. It was found that a bank, rich in light hydrocarbons, was formed at the leading edge of the CO? slug during floods on long cores. Formation of this bank is probably due to a selective extraction by the C02 and, it is believed, partially accounts for the attractively high oil recoveries. In crddition to the efficient displacernerlt of oil from the pores of the rock by this process, the favorable rnobility ratio related to a C0 2-water flood also contributes to high oil recovery. A further advantage of this process is noted on limestone and dolomite rock, in that the CO1 reacts with the porous medium increasing its permeability. Flooding experiments were conducted on sandstone and vugular dolomite models. The results of this experimental work show the effect on oil recovery of type of porous medium, pore geometry, flooding length, and flooding pressure. The porosity of the cores and rilodels varied from 16 to 21 per cent and their pern~eabilities ranged from 100 to 200 md. A reconstituted West Texas reservoir oil, a West Texas stock tank oil, an East Texas stock tank oil and Soltrol were used to represent reservoir oils in this study. Oil recoveries ranging from 60 to 80 per cent of the original oil in place in these cores were obtained by CO2,-carbonated water floods at pressures between 900 and 1,800 psi, compared with conventional solution gas drive and water-flood recoveries of 30 to 45 per cent on the same cores. Oil recoveries greater than 80 per cent resulted frorn f1oods at pressures above about 1.800 psi. There high recoveries were noted from both the sandstone and the irregular Porosity carbonate cores. In all floods, additional oil was recovered by a solutiorr gas drive resulting from blowdown following the flood. Oil recoveries of 6 to 15 per cent of the original oil in place were obtained during this blowdown period. This additional recovery was found to be a function of oil remaining after the flood, decreasing with decreasing oil saturation. It was also noted that highest oil recoveries by blowdown were obtained when carborlated water rather than plain water followed the CO, slug. INTRODUCTION Miscible phase or solvent flooding processes, which are designed to increase oil recovery -from petroleum reservoirs, involve the injection of small quantities of a petroleum solvent into the reservoir, followed by an inexpensive scavenging fluid which is miscible with the solvent. Essentially complete displacement of oil from the pores of reservoir rock has been obtained by this technique. CO,, although not completely miscible with most reservoir oils at moderate pressures, is highly soluble in these oils at pressures above about 700 psi; there is appreciable swelling and reduction in the viscosity of oil when CO, is dissolved in it. Therefore, CO, could be expected to perform similarly to other oil solvents as a displacing agent. CO, is also highly soluble in water at elevated pressures, so water should be a satisfactory material to drive a slug of CO, through an oil-bearing reservoir. A favorable mobility ratio would be obtained through the reduction in viscosity of the oil and the use of water as a final displacing agent. A number of investigations of the use of CO, to improve oil recovery have been reported in the literature.2,3,4,5,6 These studies, however, have been conducted on uniform porosity sandstone at relatively low temperatures and pressures. The behavior of CO1 as a flooding agent at temperatures above its critical temperature could not be predicted adequately from these studies, particularly for the case of non-homogeneous rock. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the oil recovery efficiency of a process involving the injection of a CO2 slug followed by carbonated water, at reservoir temperatures above 100°F and in the pressure range of 600 to 2,600 psi, and to compare this process with conventional water flooding. The investigations were primarily designed to provide information on the efficiency of the process in irregular porosity carbonate rock. The effects of flooding path length, the presence of free gas, the type of oil to be recovered, and the amount of solvent required were also determined. Single-crystal silicon films have been obtained on several natural crystal faces of BeO using the thermal decomposition of silane and the hydrogen reduction of silicon tetrachloride. From an analysis of X-ray diffraction data it was determined that the following film-substrate orientation relationships exist: (111) Si 11(0001) BeO, (111) Si 11(1011) BeO, (100) Si 11f1010) BeO. and (110) Si 11(1010) BeO. An analysis of the crystallographic relationships between the film and substrate indicates that a match occurs between the silicon atoms in the film and the berylliuni ion sites in the substrate. This correspondence is in agreement with previous work on the deposition of silicon on sapphire.1-3 silicon on spinel: and tungsten on sapphire. The high resistivity, thermal conductivity, and radiation resistance of beryllium oxide make it an important substrate material for the deposition of thin films of silicon or other semiconductors. The importance of semiconductor-insulator composites to the field of integrated microelectronics has been well-documented in the case of silicon on sapphire.'-' The successful growth of large-area single-crystal silicon on an insulator, sapphire, was first reported in 1963.1,2 Since that time studies have been made of the crystallographic relationships between the deposited film and the sapphire substrate. On the basis of the observed relationships, a model has been proposed relative to the crystallographic requirements for epitaxy between the semiconductor film and the metal oxide substrate.3 It is proposed in this model that epitaxy is the result of a match between atoms of the deposited film and the metal ion sites of the substrate plane. This match is not limited to a 1 to 1 correspondence between sites in the two lattices. Sub- sequent studies of the deposition of silicon on spinel4 and tungsten on sapphire5 have yielded data which support this model. On the basis of this previous work it was felt that silicon on BeO should also fit this model. In the present study, the choice of substrate orientation was limited to the natural faces of synthetic BeO crystals. Of the faces available, the (0001) plane seemed the most favorable for epitaxial growth. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silicon films were deposited from silane and silicon tetrachloride in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The hydrogen ambient gas was purified by passage either through a DEOXO unit, molecular sieves, and a liquid nitrogen cold trap, or through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. The gas was then mixed with the silicon source materiai and passed over the substrate which lies on a spacer above an inductively heated silicon pedestal. The following deposition conditions were used: a hydrogen flow rate of 3 liters per min with silane and silicon tetrachloride concentrations of 0.2 mole pct and a pedestal temperature of 1175" * 5°C as observed with an optical pyrometer assuming an emissivity of 1.0. Deposition was preceded by a 15- to 30-min hydrogen-etch period conducted at a temperature of 1275°C (obs). Adherent silicon films from 2 to 10 u were grown on the various BeO faces. I wish to express my keen appreciation of the article on the above subject by Coe and C1evenger.l It has been doubly interesting to me, for the reason that the experience recorded and the principles evolved practically parallel the results of similar investigations made by myself and others at The Lucky Tiger Mine, El Tigre, Sonora, Mex. An outline of the work at El Tigre may aid in confirming the principles expressed by Coe and Clevenger. El Tigre has the unenviable distinction of possessing a slime with a much lower settling rate than any recorded in the article discussed. Under most favorable conditions the settling rate is about one-third that reported for the Liberty Bell mill, and one-tenth that reported for the Nipissing, Golden Cycle, and Presidio mills. This slow settling characteristic of Tigre ore has necessitated careful investigation of settling phenomena throughout the various evolutions of the plant. Previous Settling Investigation at Tigre During construction work at the mill, the metallurgical engineer in charge, D. L. H. Forbes, ran a series of experiments on settling. His tests proved that deep settling tanks were not ordinarily necessary. The use of tanks 2 or 3 ft. in depth was suggested.2 Later experiments demonstrated that the following principles of settling applied to Tigre pulp.3 1. In settling dilute pulp, settling rates are independent of pulp depth. 2. In settling thick pulp, settling rates are approximately proportional to pulp depth.4

Drawing largely on desulfurizing practices which have been developing abroad in the last several years, this paper will cover the main ways in which producing steels with low sulfur provides appreciable benefits -- beginning with improvements in ingot processing and carrying over into improved product properties, in particular cleanliness, formability, notch toughness and weldahility. Because the raw materials and fuels used in steelmaking are sources of sulfur and the removal of this element is difficult, sulfur has tended to be accepted as an unavoidable incidental contaminant of steel. Although it was early recognized that sulfur significantly affects several mechanical properties, the main concern was with its effect on hot shortness. Concentrating on countering this effect, operators have traditionally added manganese in sufficient multiples of the sulfur content to form manganese sulfide and thus avoid iron sulfide formation, the assumption being that the steel would then be acceptable in terms of both processing and mechanical properties.

Since the days of Newcomen and Watt, when men first sought to turn the energy of fuels to useful purposes, coal-generated steam has supplied most of the power needed for both stationary and mobile applications. The low efficiency and large water requirements of the nineteenth century steam-power plant caused many engineers to turn their thoughts toward more direct means of converting heat into power. As far back as 1791, John Barber secured an English patent on a combination' which he might well have called a "gas turbine." He proposed to generate producer gas from coal or charcoal, to burn it under pressure in air obtained from a reciprocating compressor, and to drive a turbine wheel with the resultant hot combustion products. With the optimism characteristic of the inventor, he hoped that the turbine would not only operate his compressor but also perform useful work. There is no record that Barber ever built his machine, but if he had done so he would have learned that useful power can result from such a combination only when both turbine and compressor are highly efficient and when the temperature of the gas entering the turbine is not far below 1000°F. Hot-air prime movers continued to attract attention, and both Stirling in England and Ericsson in America2 built reciprocating engines that operated with some success upon coal-heated air. The internal-combustion engine, burning liquid fuels, supplanted the hot-air type, and, for the first time, challenged the supremacy of both the steam cycle and its familiar fuel, coal. Liquid Fuels Compete with Coal As the increasing use of the automobile multiplied the demand for gasoline, the supply of residual fuel increased rapidly, and heavy oil declined in price to the point where it became competitive with coal. First in the marine field and later in stationary plants in areas adjacent to refineries, oil began to be widely used. Oil's greater convenience and higher heating value per pound of weight or per cubic foot of bunker space have caused it to take over much of the marine field. The introduction of the highly efficient diesel engine, capable of burning a fuel that is cheaper than gasoline, again threatened the position of coal, for the operating costs of the diesel became directly competitive with those of coal-burning equipment. In isolated power plants and smaller marine installations, the diesel provided the medium by which oil again successfully invaded fields formerly dominated by coal. The diesel engine, provided with an electrical transmission, found an excellent application in railroad service. EXPLORATORY WORK THE related subjects of preferred orientation, directionality in physical properties, and earing tendencies of wrought metal [ ] strip have attracted the attention of metallurgists to such an extent that in the past 20 years hundreds of researches have been published on this one general problem. The anisotropy of tensile strength and elongation have been exhaustively studied in their relationship to the occurrence of ears in cups drawn from strips-20.29 and, to a lesser extent, yield strength7,11,17 and stress-strain curves" have been investigated. Despite the tremendous fund of knowledge thus accrued, no simple quantitative correlation of directionality and earing tendencies has yet been found. In a sense, this is not surprising. The formation of ears in a drawn cup clearly is a special phase of the general study of metal flow; in particular (as will be brought out in the course of this paper), ears are due to anistropy in the rates of deformation of the metal in the radial, circumferential, and "thickness" directions of the original blank. It would be difficult to effect a correlation between earing tendency and a property that may be completely independent of the flow of metal, or at best related to metal flow in an exceedingly complex fashion. Yet, it is this correlation that has been attempted; tensile strength and elongation are attributes of metal rupture, a phenomenon that has quite admirably been shown to be distinct from the phenomenon of metal flow,21 while yield strength and stress-strain

For blasting in coal mines the U. S. Bureau of Mines recommends that permissible explosives be used exclusively, that these shall be fired electrically, and that where feasible the working place shall be cut or sheared. These recommendations are made to promote safety and prevent mine explosions. Although permissible explosives are not flameless, their lower flame temperature and shorter duration of flanie make their use safer than that of nonpermissible explosives. Mixtures of air with both methane and bituminous coal dust, which are liable to occur in coal mines, may be ignited by coming in contact with any type of flame or spark of sufficient temperature and duration or by the firing of a blast. In a working place where a blast is to be fired, in addition to the use of permissible explosives, adequate ventilation for the dilution and removal of accumulations or outbursts of flammable gas should be provided. Bituminous coal mines should be rock-dusted as a means of rendering the coal dust harmless The efficient use of permissible explosives depends upon the proper preparation of the working place, standardized drilling, the strength characteristics of the explosive, and the use of a proper weight of charge. Experienced shotfirers should load, tamp and fire all holes. The major part of the information and data here presented is based on the results of efficiency tests made in large producing mines of Pennsylvania and Illinois. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations, Serial No. 2697, describes how a standard method of blasting was worked out and put into operation in a mine in southern Illinois.' This paper contains a description of the methods worked out subsequently in another mine in that district. Descriptions of tests in two Pennsylvania mines are given in Bulletins 11 and 19 of the Carnegie Institute of Technology.2 These tests

Detailed stratigraphic studies in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa district have made it possible to map the folds and faults that controlled the deposition of the zinc-lead ore. Prospecting on the basis of this mapping and prospecting in lower zones that are potentially ore-bearing have led to discoveries of ore. GEOLOGIC studies for the Federal and State governments in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district were begun in 1835, and subsequent surveys were made in the three states at intervals until 1916, see Table I. The current study of the district, Fig. 1, by the U. S. Geological Survey was begun in 1942 in the hope that a systematic investigation would help increase production of zinc and lead, then in extremely short supply. Major emphasis of the USGS program was on detailed mapping of the geologic structure and ore deposits. Preliminary maps and reports covering localities of intensive mining activity have been published during the course of this study, Fig. 2. By 1950 the objectives of the study by the USGS were revised; 71/2-min quadrangles of relatively unprospected localities as well as intensively mined localities are now being mapped in Wisconsin. Since 1945 the investigation in Wisconsin has been made in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, and since 1951 the geologic mapping of areas of particular interest in Iowa has been performed in cooperation with the Iowa Geological Survey. At intervals since 1943 the Illinois State Geological Survey has mapped the geologic structure and ore deposits of localities in the Illinois part of the mining district, see Fig. 2. Geology was applied by mining company personnel as early as 1853, but only sporadically, with periods of greater application between 1890 and 1925. Much of the so-called geologic work was in reality mining engineering. Since 1946 the major mining companies in the district have employed geologists who have successfully applied geologic techniques in the search for ore. History of Mining Occurrence of galena in the district was known as early as 1658 or 1659, when French explorers heard of lead mines that were apparently in the vicinity of Dubuque, Iowa. In 1690 a trading post was established near Dubuque to obtain galena. The first significant attempt at mining by white men took place in 1788 when the Indians granted to Julien Dubuque mining rights for 20 miles along the west side of the Mississippi River, including the vicinity of Dubuque, Iowa. By 1805 lead was being mined near Galena, Ill. In 1819 permanent settlement of the region was begun, and most of the important lead-producing areas had been found by 1830, see Fig. 3. Lead production in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa district between 1830 and 1871 far exceeded that of any other district in the U. S.' Smithsonite was first mined in 1859, and sphalerite was mined as early as 1867. After 1873 the production of sphalerite exceeded that of smithsonite. In 1873 annual zinc production from the district first equaled lead production, and from then until 1893 production of zinc and lead was roughly the same. Since 1893 the ratio of zinc to lead mined has generally ranged between 5:l and 20:l. In 1942 the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district ranked 14th among zinc-producing districts of the U. S. I have not before had the honor of offering to the Institute a communication on the subject of the variety of asphaltum which I described as uintahite; but several disconnected notices of it have appeared in the Transactions, and much additional information regirding it and its relations to other varieties of the asphalt group has been gathered together. Dr. Henry Wurtz has also discussed the nature of uintaite, and has endeavored to show that it should be considered a variety of grahamite.* We have also had an interesting paper upon."Asphalt and its Uses," from Captain F. V. Greene, containing much important technical information and a scheme of classification of the varieties of bitumen and of bituminous compounds. The object of the present paper is to bring the substance of these disconnected notices together; to present some additional facts; to revise the name uintahite; to compare the substance with the allied bitumens or asphalts, known as albertite and grahamite; and fur-

INTRODUCTION Within the past few years Clark (1972), King (1970), and King, et al. (1973), have summarized porphyry molybdenum occurrences. Clark (1972) includes as porphyry or stockwork deposits some occurrences more recent exploration has shown to be of other genetic types. King (1970) and King, et al. ( 1973) provide broad general descriptions that unfortunately are restricted to the US. Nor does the King, et al. (1973) description have benefit of the Wallace (1974), Hall, et al. (1974), or Giles (1975) data on alteration, fluid inclusions, or isotope chemistry. The synthesis presented here up- dates these older summaries, eliminating all but the well established porphyry molybdenum deposits as well as enumerating the unifying characteristics displayed by these deposits within the Cordillera of North America. This type of deposit occurs in the South American Andes as well, but Andean deposits are not well documented so only North American Cordilleran deposits are considered. Stockwork, porphyry, and Climax type molybdenum deposits are synonymous geo- logical labels for the large molybdenite de- posits found in parts of the western Cordillera of North America (Khruschov, 1959). These labels describe and define the type of deposit discussed herein. The term porphyry is preferred for this chapter because it describes the common characteristics; it separates the molybdenum deposits from the porphyry copper deposits, which have many similarities but also important differences. This usage also eliminates blanket application of the word stockwork to breccia pipe deposits such as Boss Mountain in British Columbia. J. R. Woodcock has contributed much to this chapter; his influence, original data, and thoughtful comments qualify him as co-author. Porphyry molybdenum deposits are characterized by fine-grained molybdenite occurring alone or with quartz and/or pyrite in fractures and open spaces of stockworks and breccias. The molybdenite is generally less than one millimeter across and in many cases too fine-grained to be seen with the aid of a hand lens. Occasionally some deposits con-

Every business man who has reached the age of forty, or perhaps even thirty, must know from his own experience that there are occasional periods of "good times'' and others of "bad times "-booms and panics. Those who give to business some complexion of science have invented a semiscientific name for these alternations-the business cycle-indicating that it is a normal phenomenon which by its own nature repeats itself. The longer one lives and the more one enlarges his own experience by the study of history, the more of these cycles he knows and the more disposed he becomes to take their recurrence for granted. If these alternations can be put into the category of common- places, why not treat them as such? We are in a sharp depression right now, why worry about it? Is there not a certain average value for business that can be depended upon in spite of depressions? By way of rejoinder one might answer that war is the great commonplace of history, but when we get into one we generally find it worthy of attention. In the present case, many a man has lost two-thirds of his income, and he is extremely nervous about finding it again. The Southern Pacific Railroad earnings have dropped 75 per cent in the past year; Pennsylvania, 60 per cent; United States Steel Corp., about the same. The drop in current earnings is
