I T is generally accepted that no method of coal cleaning except froth flotation is effective in cleaning dust. In the majority of coals mined in the United States the dust sizes contain a high percentage of impurities, hence the removal of the dust from the coarse sizes lowers the impurity content of these sizes. Dedusted coal is desired as a means of providing a better feed to cleaning plants because of increased efficiency in both dry and wet plants. In dry-cleaning plants, a dedusted feed makes for a pervious and uni¬form bed. With a dusty feed the fines tend to segregate in the feed stream and pass en masse over the air separators, causing a lack of uniform aeration and fluidity of the bed necessary to efficient cleaning. In wet-cleaning plants deducting of the feed often decreases the sludge problem to the point of eliminating the necessity of wasting wash water. It may be advantageous to eliminate sludge-settling equipment in favor of dedusting equipment, to provide the advantages of a dedusted feed to the wet-washing process. Dedusting advantages may include: (1) the removal of fusain, especially advantageous in plants washing coal intended for metallurgical coke; (2) prevention of the gradual build-up of solids in the wash water, with a consequent variation in the washing ability of the system; (3) prevention of the loss of dust to the sludge ponds, providing instead a fuel for local consumption or special markets.

SINCE my communication to the Institute at the Baltimore meeting in 1879,* in which I took the lead in emphasizing the importance of a new method in the manufacture of soda, already practiced to some extent in England and on the Continent of Europe, five years have passed. I.then referred particularly to the advantages offered in the United States for this peculiar method, by the ammonia process, namely: 1. At the present time, at least, we have but one mine in this country where rock-salt is mined, namely, at New Iberia, La. On the other hand, we have many localities where brine of various degrees of strength, up to that of cold saturation, is obtained in large quantities. 2. We have excellent fuel, in close proximity to most of the brinecenters. 3. Our supplies of pyrites, to use in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, for use in the manufacture of soda by the Leblanc process, are mostly too far from the brine-centers to permit competition in that line with the more favorable conditions existing in England. 4. Unlike our foreign rivals, we have no large and costly plants, erected on the Leblanc plan, which must be abandoned and exchanged for new but cheaper plants, before the ammonia-soda process can be adopted. 5. We have a constantly increasing demand for soda, which is almost entirely supplied by importation. If slow progress has been made hitherto in this country in the extension of this manufacture (only one plant at Syracuse, erected . under the Solvay patent, having as yet been placed in operation), I still feel gratified in saying that developments in England, and particularly on the Continent of Europe, give ample proof of the

Those who have observed the influence of various elements upon cast-iron will be interested in the methods used by us to form the several series of test-bars, which form the basis of the conclusions presented in this paper. We found that we could not, by adding ordinary white stickphosphorus to molten iron, produce bars which would exhibit to the eye the peculiar influence of phosphorus. By melting wrought-iron drillings with red phosphorus, Mr. H. S. Fleming produced in his laboratory 10 pounds of phosphide of iron, containing 10.22 per cent. of phosphorus. With this we made two series of test-bars, the first with our white-base iron, and the second with our FLM gray-base iron. Before the time of making these bars we had been unable to procure regularly made pig-iron which contained enough phosphorus to permit of the production of

The factors involved in selecting, a drive system for a grinding mill, including gearing arrangement, motor selection, and electric-supply system limitations are reviewed. Equipment costs are evaluated on a dollar per horsepower basis and starting performance is analyzed, the latter making use of a recently developed computer program. The present interest in large-diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a 7 to 8,000 hp mill will cost from $350 to $600,000 which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance, and replacement costs. This is the position in which the engineer or designer usually finds himself and is really one of his primary functionsestablishing a realistic compromise between cost and performance. Large primary grinding mills can represent a major portion of the cost of a plant and the drive system accounts for a substantial part of this cost. These facts justify a careful analysis of the drive requirements and all of the factors involved in ultimately arriving at the best system for the lowest cost. A number of excellent papers have been published on various aspects of mill drives. The authors have used information from these papers in making a study of a drive for a 7600-hp, 32 x 12-ft autogenous mill. This was a broad investigation, including mechanical and electrical design, layout, performance, and maintenance considerations, and overall economics leading to the selection of the optimum system for that mill. This paper was developed from the study and includes information applicable to large mills in general. For a successful and economical application, the drive must be considered as a system and all of the components analyzed to determine their effect on the system. This requires the participation of the mill designer, gear, and other mechanical component manufacturers, motor manufacturer, plant designer, and operator. A careful analysis of the mill torque requirements is first necessary to provide a basis for selection of the mechanical and electrical drive components. Because of manufacturing limitations on the size and capacity of gearing available for these low-speed applications, an evaluation of costs for various gear ratios and configurations in conjunction with motor speeds is required. Consultation with the power-supply company is necessary to determine limitations on motor-starting disturbances and to analyze operating costs on the basis of existing rate structures and low characteristics. Finally, consideration must be given to the drive arrangement and its affect on plant layout, space requirements, and location of auxiliary equipment for the selected process. There are presently three basic schemes for driving a mill. The first is a direct drive by a motor operating at mill speed with no gearing. The second is by a higher-speed motor through a trunnion-connected gear drive. The third is by a motor through the more conventional pinion and ring-gear with the option of an interposing gear box to permit greater motor speed than pinion shaft speed. [(Fig. 1.)] Several manufacturers have or are presently developing motors which drive the mill directly without the use of gears. One arrangement has the motor armature intimately surrounding the mill shell-discharge spout or extension of the trunnion journal. The motor stator is then supported independently and surrounds the shell or trunnion-mounted rotor. Another variation utilizes an independent mill-speed motor connected to the trunnion by a drive shaft and flexible couplings.

DOCTOR Albert Sauveur, distinguished scientist and Honorary Mem-ber of this Institute, predicted in the first Howe Memorial Lecture that the privilege of delivering this annual address would be considered a highly significant honor. The intervening years have well borne out Sauveur's prophecy. I wish to assure the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers that I also deeply appreciate this honor, recognizing at the same time the present and even more the future respon-sibilities with which it is accompanied. Several of the previous lecturers had the good fortune to attend the classes of Professor Howe and to work in his laboratories. I was similarly favored, although in my instance and to my great regret the period was all too short. However, Howe's book, published in 1903, "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," afforded me abundant opportunity to continue these studies. How well I remember the inspiration I derived from this famous book by Howe, the metallurgical master, pioneer, and educator! Remembering that Professor Howe contributed numerous papers to The Metallographist, a magazine supported from a technical point of view by the world's pioneers in metallography, I was curious a few days ago to learn the nature of Howe's early contributions to this magazine. The first paper by Howe in the first year of The Metallographist (1898) dealt with the allotropic theory; the second also treated of allotropy, and I quote the first sentence. of that paper: The allotropic theory of the hardening of steel may, like so many other important theories, have to be accepted or rejected not on direct proof or disproof, but on the accumulation of circumstantial evidence for or against it.

SINCE the inception of vacuum cold-hearth arc melting of high-temperature alloys (about 4 years ago) it has been theoretically reasoned and qualitatively found that better mechanical properties are often obtained from alloys which have been melted by this practice. Mechanical properties are emphasized in this evaluation because of their importance in design. Vacuum-arc melting has an intrinsic advantage in that it creates an ingot grain structure which is easier to forge and thus leads to greater yields for the finished product. The greater yield naturally gives the process an economic basis when the cost per pound of alloy is rather high. However, the question stressed here is, does the process create an alloy with inherently better properties? There are several theoretical reasons for suspecting that it does. One is the vacuum refining which should permit lowering the content of harmful residuals with high vapor pressures. A second is the vacuum process which should preclude the formation of harmful distribution of oxides, nitrides, or carbo-nitrides, by keeping the amount of such constituents formed to a minimum. A third is the vacuum-arc cold-hearth method which prevents the possibility of pick-up of harmful elements from a refractory crucible since none is used. Fourth, the rapid solidification rate, induced by having a cold mold and only small amounts of molten metal at any one time, minimizes the segregation of elements like titanium, aluminum, and molybdenum from the top to the bottom of the ingot. This rapid solidification rate also decreases the tendency of the above elements to form undesirable phases by segregating locally. Another less frequently considered vacuum-arc melting advantage is the inherently finer-grained ingot structure which can be produced. Finer initial grain size leads to better forgeability, and means that after relatively small reductions to billets or final forged products a finer-grained material is obtained, which, by virtue of its finer grain size, would usually have greater stress-rupture ductility.

The Anaconda Company, an organization of mining people, enters a new world of copper production as it brings on stream its recently constructed Twin Buttes operation some 25 miles south of Tucson, Ariz. Twin Buttes comprises the largest earth-moving task performed in the history of mining. Some people liken this job to moving enough earth and rock to complete the famed Aswan High Dam in Egypt. In all, some 236 million tons of overburden and rock were removed from over the ore deposit.

Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type.1 Prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied.

(New York meeting, February, 1913.) IN the study of ore deposits water plays a very prominent part. The small group of igneous ores involve it least, but in all the rest it is an invariable feature. The ground-water, therefore, is perhaps as appropriate a subject for discussion before a session of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as any topic which might be selected. The theme is if anything the more appropriate, because two very important contributions to it have already appeared in the Transactions. The great essay in 1893 of Franz Posepny,1 systematized and classified the subject, and was doubtless not without its influence in leading to the presentation in 1900, by C. R. Van Hise, of an important contribution entitled Some Principles Controlling the Deposition of Ores.2 We all recall the discussions of 10 or 12 years ago, and the interest in these themes which then prevailed in the Institute. They are collectively accessible in the separate edition wisely assembled by Dr. Raymond, and now to be supplemented by the Emmons Volume. Views have been progressing in the past decade or more, and new evidence has been brought to light. A general summary and concise statement may, therefore, not be without interest.

L HISTORY. THE Pierrefitte mines, situated in the South of France, in the district of the Hautes-Pyrenees, owe their name to the fact that the first mining operations of any extent, and of comparatively recent date, were carried out in the neighborhood of the vil¬lage of Pierrefitte, which is a branch terminus of the Midi railway. The Pierrefitte mines, however, embrace a wide extent of country and several different concessions, on most of which comparatively little exploration-work has been done. The portion of the property presently to be described is a zone running roughly E-W., over a distance of about 5 miles from the valley of Cauterets to the valley of Estaing, the ridge dividing these valleys being a spur of the main chain of the Pyrenees, and running more or less at right angles to it. According to local tradition, which various indications tend to confirm, these mines are of ancient date, the first workings being attributed to the Romans, who are supposed to have sought not only the lead but also the silver which is contained in the ore. Old slags have been found in the neighborhood which might well have been produced from the cupellation of lead-ores. These old workings, while of considerable extent at times, do not seem to have extended beyond a depth of 100 ft., even this depth being somewhat exceptional. The old notarial records of the district show that mines were known to exist, and that they were even worked, in the sixteenth century, but since the mines were abandoned (by the Romans or others) considerably prior to this period, very little

In nzost cases, the driving force for a lattice transformation is produced by supercooling below the equilibriunz transformation temperature. The interfnce reaction in isothermally annealed, multiphase diffusion couples may involve a luttice transformation which also requires a driving force. Direct experinzental evidence has been obtained for the existence of the driring force in the form of a supersaturated phase at the aocc)-0@cc) interface in Cu:Cu-12.5 ult pct A1 couples; the super saturation is equivalent to an excess free energy of approximately 3 cal per mol at 905. A tentatiue interpretation of the dynanzic situation a1 the interface based on the free energy-composition diagram is proposed. THE presently accepted theory of diffusion in multiphase couples1 states that there will be a phase layer in the diffusion zone for every region which has three degrees of freedom and which is crossed by the diffusion path in the equilibrium phase diagram. For binary systems, this restriction excludes all but single-phase fields and, for ternary systems, only one- and two-phase fields are included. In addition, Rhines"~ as well as other investigators3 6 have reported that the compositions of the various phases adjacent to the interfaces are, for all practical purposes, the compositions given by the intersections of the diffusion path with the solubility limits of the single-phase fields of the equilibrium phase diagram. Some studies of the rate of thickening of these intermediate diffusion layers indicate that the thickness of the layer changes para-bolically with time, or: where x is the position of the interface relative to an origin xo, t is the diffusion time, and k is a temperature-dependent factor. crank7 shows mathematically that, if the compositions at an interface are independent of time and the motion of the interface is controlled by the diffusion of the elements to and from the interface, then the segments of the concentration penetration curve for a semi-infinite step-function couple will be described by an equation of the form: hence, Eq. [l] follows from Eq. (21 if the interface compositions are fixed and if the motion of the interface is diffusion-controlled. Although the concept of local equilibrium being attained at interfaces has assumed a prominent role in the theory of diffusion in multiphase couples, experimental evidence and theoretical discussions which challenge the general validity of this concept have been reported in the literature. arkeen' has stated that strict obedience to the conditions set by the equilibrium phase diagram cannot be expected in any system in which diffusion is occurring because diffusion takes place only in the presence of an activity gradient. Darken also noted that it is usually assumed that equilibrium is attained locally at the interface although the system as a whole is not at equilibrium, the implication being that the transformation at the interface is rapid in comparison with the rate of supply of the elements by diffusion. ISirkaldy3 indicates agreement with Darken in that he believes the concept of local equilibrium is at best an approximation because the motion of the phase boundary requires that there be a free-energy difference and, hence, a departure from the equilibrium composition at the interface. Seebold and Birks9 have stated that diffusion couples cannot be in true equilibrium, but the results obtained are often in good agreement with the phase diagram. The initial deviation from equilibrium in a diffusion couple will be quite large because alloys of significantly different compositions are usually joined together. Kirkaldy feels that the transition time for the attainment of constant interface compositions (essentially the equilibrium values) will be small, although in some cases finite. Castleman and sieglelo observed such transition times in multiphase A1-Ni couples, but at low annealing temperatures these times were quite long. Similarly, ~asing" found departures, which persisted for more than 20 hr, at phase interfaces in Au-Ni and Fe-Mo diffusion couples. Braun and Powell's12 measurements of the solubility limits of the intermediate phases in the Au-In system as determined by microprobe analysis of diffusion couples do not agree with the limits reported by Hiscocks and Hume-Rothery13 who used equilibrated samples. Finally, Borovskii and ~archukova'~ have stated that the determination of the solubility limits of phase diagrams using high-resolution micro-analyzer measurements at the interfaces of multiphase couples is not an accurate technique because of deviations from the equilibrium compositions at a moving interface; diffusion couples may be used to map out the phase boundaries in the equilibrium diagram, but the final determination of the solubility iimits should be made with equilibrated samples. The purpose of this work was to investigate the conditions prevailing at an interface in a multiphase diffusion couple and to compare the interface compositions with those associated with true thermodynamic equilibrium between the two phases. Microanalyzer techniques were used to measure interface compositions in two-phase Cu-A1 diffusion couples annealed at 80@, 905", and 1000°C for various times.

An evaluation is made of the possible cautsal relationship between twinning and fracture in molybdenum. For both single and poly crystalline material no instance of twin-induced fracture was observed. Instead brittle fracture was found to be slip-induced at heterogeneities. For single-crystal material, the yield stvess in compression and the fracture stvess in tensiow obey a similar angular- relationship which follows approximately a 1/cos2 ? law. where 0 is the angle between the specimen axis and the nearest (100) plane. This sittlilarity between yield and fracture behavior casts doubt on the interpretations made previoltsly that a 1/cos2? relationship supports a critical normal fracture stress criterion. SINCE fracture in brittle materials takes place at stresses an order of magnitude lower than the theoretical strength of the lattice, it must be postulated that some stress-concentrating effect is operative during the fracture-initiation process. Several mechanisms have been proposed whereby the necessary stress concentrations could be produced. The well-known Cottrell mechanism1 describes a dislocation interaction which can lead to the formation of an incipient cleavage crack on a cleavage plane, and both zener2 and stroh3 have discussed models which predict the stress concentration at the intersection of a slip band with a grain boundary. When twinning occurs twin/twin intersections and twin/grain boundary intersections represent another possible means of fracture initiation. Although still controversial, the concept of twin-induced fracture is supported by a weighty mass of evidence, which has been reviewed in a recent paper.4 This investigation was conducted in order to assess the extent to which the brittleness of molybdenum can be ascribed to this cause. Emphasis was placed on seeking direct metallographic evidence for twin-induced fracture such as arrangements of twins located at the fracture origin. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM Materials. The experimental materials are described inTable I. From the chemical analyses and estimates of the amounts of interstitials likely to be retained in solution,5 it is concluded that all were mul-tiphased systems. X-ray diffraction experiments6 showed no evidence of preferred orientation in the polycrystalline materials. Single crystals were grown from Molybdenum X and Y using the floating-zone technique,' in a vacuum of better than 3 x 10-5 Torr. However difficulties were experienced with Molybdenum X due to violent gas evolution from the molten zone, and additional crystals (Crystals 3 to 6) were produced by annealing for 5 1/2 hr at 2300°C under a vacuum of 10-4 Torr. Techniques. A series of tension, compression, and bend tests was conducted. Tension tests were used to demonstrate brittle behavior, to measure brittle-fracture stresses, and to provide fractured specimens for metallographic inspection. Compression tests were employed in order to obtain some ductility and a measure of the yield stress. Furthermore, it was considered that compression loading would permit the study of crack nucleation in the absence of propagation. The bend tests were conducted to facilitate identification of the fracture origin, which would be expected to be at, or near, the tensile surface of the sample. Tests were carried out at temperatures between 78" and 298°K attained by means of a liquid-nitrogen evaporator of modified Wessel design.' Specimens were fashioned by mechanical grinding, and, prior to heat treatment, were electropolished at 10 v in a 3:l mixture of ethyl alcohol and sulfuric acid, using a stainless-steel cathode. Except where noted, a strain rate of 4 pct per min was used. All specimens had a gage section 0.75 in. long; diameters of 0.10 and 0.20 in. were adopted for the tension and compression specimens, respectively, the former of single shoulder design, the ends being gripped in split collets with a conical bearing surface. In the bend test, electropolished specimens measuring 0.080 by 0.25 by 1.25 in. were deformed at 78°K by four-point loading. The bending device had spans of 1 in. between the outer and 4 in between the inner fulcra; it was stressed between the compression anvils of the Instron machine at a constant deflection rate. BENTONITE deposits are known to occur in Texas within the Jackson group of formations. This group represents the uppermost Eocene age sediments found in the coastal plain area of Texas. It outcrops across this area of the state in a narrow band of some 4 to 20 miles width. The outcrop pattern roughly parallels the present Gulf of Mexico shore line and is some 100 miles inland from the Texas shore, Fig 1. The principal bentonite deposits are found in the areas where this outcrop pattern cuts across the south-central Texas counties of Karnes, Gonzales, and Fayette. In these deposits, the better quality bentonite is found in the lower or bottom layers of the volcanic ash deposits in which they occur. Some of these better quality bentonites develop very light colors upon firing and therefore justify their being classified as "white firing." The deposits in Karnes and Gonzales Counties apparently occur in commercial quantity, whereas the white firing strata so far uncovered in Fayette County have been too thin to be classified as yet as "commercial." A study of the ceramic properties of the weathered ash in Gonzales and Karnes Counties was reported in 1941.1

by the combustion of this gas as it reached the air was a familiar sight in the days when open-top furnaces were in vogue. As blast-furnace practice progressed, however, involving the use of hot blast and the development of power from the gas, blast-furnace construction was modified to conserve this gas for heating hot-blast stoves, raising steam under boilers, and various miscellaneous purposes. When the use of blast-furnace gas was extended to the driving of gas engines, the necessity for thoroughly cleaning the gas became apparent., and soon the advantages of also properly cleaning the gas for use in stoves and udder boilers became more fully recognized.

A new device based on a constant rate of loading has been developed for the compression testing of green and dry pellets. This device has a lower test variation for green pellets than the existing constant deformation rate tester. While the test variations for dry pellets are similar for both types of machine, the new tester is sensitive enough to measure dry pellet deformations of 15 µ in. for cyclic loading studies. In the study discussed here, the compressive load at which a pellet breaks proved to be a normally distributed random variable, and the load-deformation relationship was found to be linear for dry pellets but not for green pellets. The paper emphasizes the need for a standardized test procedure throughout the industry. For many years the green and dry compressive strengths of pellets have been considered as possible criteria of pellet performance during induration. Little attention, however, has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of this test. The sulphur-belching, miner-welching, smelter engineer. -Anonymous From "The Engineer," Engineering & Mining Journal, Apr. 13, 1918 INTRODUCTION A striking characteristic of publications devoted to the principles of engineering economy and investment analysis is that the revenue side of the equation is generally either ignored entirely or addressed only in a superficial manner. This is understandable to a degree in the general case because methods of revenue estimation are highly dependent upon the specific type of project under consideration and the nature of the market served. An important contributing factor, however, is that developing estimates of future sales prices for most products is a risky activity which is less amenable to credible quantitative modeling than other topics in investment analysis. The specific subset of capital intensive investments addressed in this book- mining projects-is particularly sensitive to projections of mineral prices, many of which are notoriously volatile. Furthermore, the unique nature of mineral markets, prices, and product specifications occupies a major role in mineral project evaluation. Even here, however, authors have tended to offer little assistance to the reader in estimating project revenues. Current prices may be used, but it is preferable to take the average price for the past 25 to 35 years as it covers definite business cycles. Many of the auriferous placers of the arid Southwest differ widely from the standard types of stream and eluvial deposits of more humid regions, although exhibiting some of the features of each. This divergence in characteristics is of geological and economic importance and appears sufficient to warrant the consideration of these placers as a class distinct from both stream and eluvial deposits. It is hoped that the consideration of these auriferous gravels as a distinct type of deposit will facilitate recognition of morphological and economic features that might remain obscure if these deposits were viewed in the light of stream or eluvial placers whose type locality is a more humid environment. "Bajada placer" is proposed as the designation for this type of placer deposit. Bajada is the Spanish term for slope and is used locally in the Southwest to indicate the lower slope of a mountain range, the portion consisting of rock debris and standing at a much lower angle than the rock slope of the range proper. It has been used in a geologic sense by Schraderl and others. The type locality of bajada placers is the Sonoran Desert,2 where they occur on the bajada or rock debris slope of desert ranges. Stream placers are represented in the Southwest, but most of them lie within the mountain topographic province, the Mexican Highlands2 section of the Basin and Range physiographic province. Eluvial placers may occur in the mountainous semiarid Mexican Highlands but are almost unknown in the extremely arid Sonoran Desert, as mountain slopes are generally too steep to permit the accumulation of any considerable mantle of residual debris. Since their salient distinctions are almost wholly the result of formation under conditions of extreme aridity, bajada placers are largely confined to the Sonoran Desert, although a few occur in the adjacent Mexican Highlands. They may be modified by the action of ephemeral streams, in which case the placer gravels of these arroyos approach stream placers in type and habit of occurrence, but their relation to an arid environment and the bajada type is usually apparent.
