MORE than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after effects, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U. S. Geological Survey in coopera-tion with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (1) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely -in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride, ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, or 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. INTRODUCTION The administrative processes of coal mines are becoming increasingly complex. As society evolves into a more complicated structure with greater emphasis on individuality, government regulations reach deeply into every activity in an effort to force individuals into a standardized mold. These contradictory pressures add an extra burden to the administration of a mining operation. Recent years have brought a substantial change in the skills needed by mine supervisors and managers. As a result, a better understanding of the administrative functions is necessary. The mine superintendent has the overall responsibility for the mine; for effective operation he must be sufficiently knowledgeable to oversee all the complex functions that make up the mine. This chapter does not cover all the administrative requirements because of the variation in mine operation and in company policies and organizational structure. It does attempt to identify the administrative functions that would be required at a large mine with a preparation plant. It is assumed that the mine operation is decentralized with very little duplication of functions at the organizational levels above the mine. Thus each function is assumed to be relatively complete at the mine and under the general supervision of the mine superintendent. EMPLOYMENT PROCEDURES Throughout the mining industry, in deep or surface mining, in union or nonunion companies, the success or failure of an organization is directly related to the caliber of employees who make up the organization. Since 1907 Illinois has furnished about 15 per cent. of the United States output and about 10 per cent, of the world's production. The value of the output in 1913 is estimated at $307000,000, of which about $20,000,000 is profit. The present prosperity dates from 1905, but efforts have been made since 1865 to develop production and geologists have been very sanguine as to its future for over 25 years. Had the oil operators been as confident as the geologists, the field would have been opened at least 30 years earlier. The substance of this paper was prepared for the Seventh International Congress of Applied Chemistry, held in London, May, 1909, under the title, Some Developments in Blast-Roasting. In the absence of the author, a short abstract of the paper was read, and the abstract only will appear in the proceedings of the congress. The present paper has been partly rewritten and considerably enlarged by information gained since the original was prepared; also some illustrations have been added. Blast-roasting* is a generic term for the process of forcing air through finely-divided metallic sulphide with the object of roasting and agglomerating in a single operation. At first the process was confined to a galena-concentrate; lime, limestone, or gypsum was added, to serve both as a diluent to keep separate the particles of galena that they might be thoroughly oxidized, and as a flux that the partly-roasted ore niight be agglomerated by the formation of some slag. Later it was extended to treat other metallic sulphides. The leading processes were the Huntington-Heberlein and the Savelsberg of Europe, and the Carmichael-Bradford of Australia. In the United States and Canada, the Huntington-Heberlein process has found application in some instances with galena-concentrates, for which it was originally intended; but this class of ore is not often treated alone, hence the process has had to be modified to suit conditions. The Savelsberg process has been transplanted to this country in about its original form. The Carmichael-Bradford is not used at present. Although the phenomenon of season cracking is still imperfectly understood, there seems to be ample evidence that season cracks are propagated by the combined action of corrosion and a stress of either internal (residual) origin or external origin. The factors that influence season cracking may therefore be grouped according to corrosive media, nature of stress, and character of the material. Thus the important mass of evidence pointing to ammonia as the most frequently active corroding agent causing season - - cracking of brass has naturally led to the development of laboratory tests of a moderately accelerated character based upon ammonia together with auxiliary agents such as air, water vapor, and carbon dioxide as the corroding agent. Similarly, the knowledge that stress must be present has led to the use of externally applied and therefore accurately measurable stresses in laboratory testing. A companion paper(^)^ to the present one discusses the development of these test methods in our laboratories. The present paper discusses data bearing on factors concerning the nature of stress such as its magnitude and direction of application. Metalliferous sediments are present through- out much of the ocean basins and are locally prominent in the sedimentary column on and near the Nazca plate of the east-southeast Pacific Ocean. They typically have anomalously high concentrations of the transition metals, and those on parts of the East Pacific Rise, the Bauer Deep, and other basinal depressions may contain more then 12% iron, 4% manganese, 0.1 % each of copper and nickel, and geochemically significant amounts of zinc, cobalt, molybdenum, arsenic, beryllium, silver, and possibly gold. Statistical interprerarions of chemical data indicate that most metals in sediments on the East Pacific Rise were derived from a hydrothermal component related to submarine volcanism, whereas those in basinal sediments accumulated from both hydrothermal and hydrogenous components of sedimentation. However, concentrations of the metals are controlled more by the absence of biogenic and detrital components than by nearness to centers of hydrothermal activity.

Early in the present century, prospect-ing was active in the area of the present Miami district. There were plenty of blue and green copper outcroppings, but very little ore of a grade that would stand shipping costs had been uncovered. Late in the first decade of the century, tunnels were driven into the north and south slopes of the Inspiration ridge, and two of them exposed disseminated copper sulphide ore. This was the original discovery of such ore on the ground of what eventually became the Inspiration Division of the consolidated company. By 1910 exploration of the ground area was well along and by 1911 underground development had been started. In the next few years a large tonnage of disseminated copper ore had been proven— sufficient to justify the expenditure of several million dollars in mine development and for mine equipment plus large sums for treatment plants. The mine and treatment plants were placed in production July 1, 1915. To Jan. I, 1945, there had been produced from the mines of the Inspiration Consoli-dated Copper Co., more than 106,000,000 tons of ore. Nearly all of this tonnage had been recovered by block caving. GeologIcal and EconomIc FActors Block caving is a mining system based on the fact that if a mass of rock has a sufficient number of fractures and planes of weakness the mass will disintegrate if the support of an area of sufficient size is taken away—that is, "undercut." If the material that caves away from the bottom of a block is drawn off the spalling is progressive. There is a limit to the speed of this spalling or caving action, which varies with the structure of the rock being caved. If the rock is drawn at a rate faster than the caving rate, and if this drawing is continued too long, a void may be created that could make a very dangerous condition if the area should drop as a block and force the air below the uncaved rock out through the raises and drifts. This can be a very destructive force. On the other hand, if the broken material is not drawn fast enough the swell of the material in place to broken material would pack the mass until it was almost solid again and could not be drawn without much blasting, or perhaps even partially undercutting again. Geologically therefore it would seem that any rock with seams and fractures would cave; but for block caving there should be enough seams and fractures in a limited area so that such an area will cave and produce a product that can be drawn safely, rapidly enough and at a cost justified by the value of the product being drawn. At the Inspiration the disseminated ores occur in two formations, the Pinal schist and the Schultze granite. There is no material difference in the grade of the ore formed in the schist and in the granite. The chief copper minerals are chalcocite, malachite, azurite and chrysocolla. Other copper minerals occur in limited quantity.

The Cominco smelter, located at Trail, British Columbia, Canada, produces 180 000 metric tons of lead bullion annually in conventional blast furnaces. The resulting slag from these furnaces, 210 000 metric tons annually, containing 18 per cent zinc and 2.5 per cent lead, is treated directly in the slag fuming plant for the recovery of these metals and other valuable metals present in smaller quantities. Slag fuming is carried out on a 55 metric ton batch process in completely water-jacketed furnaces where the slag is blown with a mixture of powdered coal and air. The coal-to-air ratio is con- trolled to maintain strongly reducing conditions, thus, fuming the metals from the slag. The metal vapours are subsequently re-oxidized with air above the bath. The mixture of oxides is carried from the furnace by the gases through waste heat boilers and cooling flues to a baghouse where they are collected. The slag fuming plant, under normal conditions, will treat 700 metric tons of slag daily. The throughput in the plant is dependent on the fuming rate of zinc, which is a function of the composition of the slag, and on the economics, which dictate the extent to which zinc is fumed from the slag. Zinc and lead collected daily as fume average 113 metric tons and 17 metric tons, respectively, corresponding to recoveries of 89 per cent zinc and 98 per cent lead from the slag. The waste heat boilers produce 61 metric tons steam per hour, which is distributed to other processing plants.

The etching effect that is produced on a piece of polished iron or steel when it is heated in hydrogen or in a vacuum seems to have been observed first by Osmond,' who believed that he could distinguish four systems of grain boundaries on a piece of steel which had been heated in hydrogen. In a number of other investigations, samples of pure iron were found, after heating, to have complex networks in which two or three systems of grain boundaries could be detected. It was further noticed that samples that had been polished plane before being placed in the furnace were, after treatment, roughened and undulating over their entire surfaces. From a comparison of the temperature of heat treatment with that of the A3 transformation, it was concluded that the changed appearance of the samples was definitely related to the latter phenomenon. Certain other deductions were made but these are not of importance here and only observations on the appearance of the samples will be reviewed. Ewen2 heated a strip of polished iron in a vacuum in such a way that one end was maintained at a temperature of 1000" C. and the other at 580" C. On the cooler end there was outlined a simple polyhedral network, and at the hotter there appeared the complex systern of lines ant the undulating surface characteristic of iron which has passed through the A3 transformation. He found that in going from the cooler toward thc hotter end the sample maintained much the same character of surface up to the beginning of the transformed area, but that near this region doublc grain boundaries were of frequent occurrence. Rawdon and Scott concluded that the simple type of network brought out by heating a sample of pure iron in a vacuum was of the same type as that developec by ordinary etching methods. DURING the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of stream-lined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. Since 1930, we have witnessed the erection of the world's largest suspension bridge, the largest and fastest ocean liner and the spectacular Boulder Dam, while even greater things are planned in these particular fields. Other indus-tries, too, have been moving ahead rapidly. This advance in a few years has been caused primarily by the fierce competition of the depression. Now, more than ever, is the emphasis placed upon quality and service. Makers of southern merchant pig iron have been no exception and have been confronted with increasingly strict chemical specifications and with much greater stress on physical characteristics than ever before. For example, sulfur in the iron must be held very low, competition demanding that it be in the 0.020's and low 0.030's; silicon content must be held within a very narrow range, and definite requirements of phos-phorus and manganese are an essential part of the specifications. Physical characteristics are becoming of increasingly greater impor-tance. The introduction of triple-skimmed, slow-cooled iron several years ago was the first step in this direction. Now there are a few customers who buy iron by chemical analysis and physical appear-ance, having found that the analysis alone is an insufficient guide to their requirements.

AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal ribs and movement of the roof and pavement.

In the belief that a resume of what will be exhibited during this meeting, and a brief record of progress in the seven years which have elapsed since the Institute's first visit to Lake Superior would be interesting, the following statistical data have been prepared or copied from the most reliable sources, and considerations are also presented concerning the development or utilization of some of the resources of the Lake Superior Region. When the Institute, on the return trip from enjoying the charming panoramas of Thunder Cape or Isle Royale, and inspecting the unique development of Silver Islet, passed, in August, 1880, through the St. Mary's Falls ship canal, en route to Escanaba, the boat was lowered from the level of Lake Superior to that of Michigan and Huron lakes (18 feet), through two locks each 70 feet wide and 350 feet long, which had been in use since 1855. But as these locks accommodated vessels which drew 12 feet of water or less, a new lock 80 feet wide, 515 feet long and admitting vessels of 16 feet draught was approaching completion and was opened in September, 1881. The time required to pass the locks was utilized by the members in examining the work upon this new lock and in viewing the Sault Ste. Marie, which in discharging from Lake Superior all average volume of 90,783 cubic feet of water per second, forms a rapid, falling 18 feet in one mile. As 1972 slipped through our grasp, coal industry adjustments to health and safety laws, environmental restrictions, rising costs and higher production targets left many mine operators groping for a new grip. The industry adopted a defensive attitude in 1972 as it faced the onslaught of inspectors. With rigid demands for improving safety and instituting environmental programs, the industry worked hard and watched production figures stagger upward while operating costs zoomed. In an effort to determine how to meet the goals that were established for fewer ignitions, fewer accidents, less respirable dust, lower noise levels, fewer law violations, better reclamation, less pollution, lower costs and higher production, industry representatives attended numerous technical meetings.

I. INTRODUCTION THE word recovery as used in this paper is applied in its broader sense and not limited to wells producing from horizons of unconsolidated sands. Certain problems connected with the winning of petroleum from such horizons present themselves while drilling is in progress and should be considered before drilling is commenced wherever unconsolidated sands are expected. Maximum recovery depends not alone upon efficient pumping methods but also upon the selection of a proper drilling system and the completion of a well especially adapted to the extraction of these oil-bearing sands. II. DRILLING DETERMINING FACTORS IN SELECTION OF METHOD The selection of a drilling method for the development of a region in which the oil reservoir consists of unconsolidated sands is based on the following considerations: (1) Character of the formations overlying the reservoir; (2) thickness of the oil-bearing stratum or strata; (3) thickness and character of water or gas sands; (4) gas pressure to be encountered or expected; (5) total depth of well.

Encouraged by increased demand and higher prices for such metals as copper, lead, zinc, silver and tin, search was pressed in 1964 for mineral raw materials, especially in parts of the world that are relatively more stable politically and economically. New discoveries of metallic ores continued to be made, discoveries based on extensive geologic and geophysical work but nonetheless made in part because of good fortune.

With the increasing importance of clay in drilling operations which demand more precise and exacting control over its behavior, there has come the realization that most of our present methods of control over many of its important properties still represent more of an art than a science. Such a situation with respect to a material of such industrial significance is unfortunate, and naturally many investigations have been conducted to improve our knowledge. In general, these investigations have revealed the complex nature of clay behavior and while sometimes they may not have seemed to contribute directly to a solution of the field operator's problems they have been of inestimable importance in bringing to light the broad fundamental scientific principles upon which must be based any effective working theory correlating the known facts of clay behavior and predicting profitable new lines of attack for its improvement. Major Facts Concerning Behavior of Clays In the study of clays, as in that of most other colloidal materials, it has been impossible to make progress by the study of isolated facts. On the other hand, analysis of large groups of facts, many of which seem at first completely unrelated, can lead to a deeper insight into the structure of clays and the mechanism of their behavior. It will be well to list the major facts on which the analysis here presented is based, starting with those that have emerged repeatedly from past investigations and which thereby constitute an impregnable foundation upon which must rest any comprehensive theory of clay behavior: 1. Clays consist of hydrated aluminosilicates of extremely fine and variable particle size. 2. Suspended in water, clays exhibit variable degrees of swelling, depending upon their origin and upon the chemical and colloidal nature of any other substances present. The magnitude of the swelling is a direct indication of the extent to which the clay has become dispersed.

INTRODUCTION Where and how to spend the exploration dollar to net the greatest economic return, has always been a major problem for mining companies. Minerals are being consumed in ever increasing quantitie: throughout the world and the mining industry is being called on to meet this demand. In view of the present world-wide nationalistic trend, it is becoming more difficult to determine where exploration money can be spent most profitably. An exploration project should be evaluated continually--in the beginning, to define economic targets and later to determine, as early as possible, whether a project has a chance of developing into a venture that will make a profit acceptable to top management. At this point, a decision can be made whether or not to proceed with plans to bring in a new mine. Exploration, evaluation, and development, therefore, must be fully integrated in transforming an exploration project into a profitable mining venture. DEMAND FOR LEAD AND ZINC Lead and zinc are metals basic to our economy and the demand for them will continue to rise as the population in the world increases. If the population continues to grow at the present rate, it will about double by the year 2000. The accelerating demand for these metals is shown by statistics. Nearly half as much lead (48%) and more than half as much zinc (55%) have been mined between the two world wars as in all pre- ceding history. (1)

THE first plans were made in 1930 for the mining by open-pit methods of the low-grade disseminated ore body now known as the Morenci open pit. It was not until 1937, however, that final plans were completed and the decision reached to go ahead with the actual development. Many advances were made in open-pit mining equipment during that period of seven years, therefore the ways and means of attack actually used were very different from those originally contemplated. Diesel-operated bulldozers, big trucks, full-revolving electric shovels and electric churn drills constitute the major equipment finally purchased for this modern stripping operation. Neither the bulldozers nor the big trucks were considered in the early operating plans, for at that time bulldozers had not been used in mining operations and the trucks as yet were undesigned. The full-revolving shovel and the churn drills were not new developments in open-pit equipment, but both had undergone remarkable manufacturing transition, emerging far more efficient and far more dependable than their predecessors. Even the ordinary drilling steel had been fundamentally changed. It was now threaded so that the dulled cutting bits could be detached and replaced, thus eliminating the costly transportation of long bars to the drill shop for resharpening. The decision to use trucks in the preliminary stripping operations was based on the desirability of this type of transportation to economically prepare the pit for rail haulage, coupled with the success that the contractors had had with them on other big excavation jobs. There are at present no plans for the use of trucks beyond the preliminary work, inasmuch as rail haulage will give lower costs after roadbeds and benches are once established. For many years to come, both ore and waste haulage will be over favorable grades. The average length of ore haul between the pit and an assembly yard will be about two miles. From there the crushers will be 1 1/3 miles with a connecting track grade of 0.4 per cent. The upper ore benches of the pit will be reached from the yard by a series of four switchbacks over a ruling grade of 4.0 per cent compensated for curvature. Tracks to the dumps will be on 0.2 per cent grades.

An improved general rate equation for a one-ditnensional gas-solid system has been derived. Fov the veversihle interfacial chemical reaction, there are concentrations of gaseous reactant and product at the reacting zone to be considered. They have been calculated with the velations fuvnished by the constraints on the system, namely, quasi-steady state and equimolal counterdiffusion of the gases. The results of the diffusiori study of Evans, Watson, and ,Mason based on the "dusty gas" model have been applied here. The interfacial chemical reaction is taken as first-order with respect to the concentration of the gases involved. The equation has proper dependence on gas composition and on solid structure through the relative values of Knudsen and normal diffusivities. The existence of the total pressure gradient inside the specimen has been predicted and confirmed experimentally. In a previous communication' we introduced a general rate equation for gas-solid reactions by considering the contributions of chemical reaction at inter- phase boundaries and diffusion through the solid product layer simultaneously. These equations, for one-dimensional and spherical specimens, take care of the whole range continuously from purely diffusion control to purely chemical reaction control. In this paper we study only the one-dimensional system. The corresponding rate equation is reproduced here: Of the two terms on the right-hand side of Eq. [I], the first represents the contribution of interfacial chemical reaction and the second that of gaseous diffusion. The shortcomings of Eq. [I] are that in its derivation the interfacial chemical reaction was assumed to be irreversible and the diffusion rate of gaseous product was not considered. Any pressure effects building up within the porous media were also neglected. Evidently. these simplifying assumptions will limit the general applicability of these equations. The rate of reduction of iron oxide by hydrogen, for instance, is very sensitive to the concentration of water vapor in the main gas stream, as has been reported by cewan' and by Quets et a1.3 Furthermore, the gaseous phase at the reacting interface will contain an appreciable amount of the gaseous product of reaction. If this were not true, a sufficiently high concentration gradient for the outward diffusion of the gaseous product could not be maintained. With these shortcomings in mind, Eq.
