Methods for reducing the cyclic nature of drill and blast tunneling operations have been long needed. A miniature blasting system using 10 mm (.375 in.) holes, 0.91 m (36 in.) deep, and blasting only one hole at a time makes it practical for men to work behind a shield, remaining at the face during the entire process. A prototype automated module was developed to drill, load the hole and initiate the detonation without moving from the hole. A unique cost effective gell explosive and a novel, low cost initiation method were developed.

El presente trabajo describe el origen y la geología del proyecto Trapiche, como propiedad de la Cía. El Molle Verde SAC subsidiaria. Dicho proyecto está ubicado 100 km al sur de la ciudad de Abancay, región de Apurímac, parte central del sur Perú y fue descubierto por Cedimin, producto de un intenso programa de grassroot realizado a partir del año 1995 hasta el 2001 en que fue perforado. Luego fue explorado por Cía. de Minas Buenaventura a partir del 2,005 hasta la actualidad. El yacimiento es del tipo pórfido de cobre y molibdeno, su localización metalogenética es en el borde oeste del batolito Andahuaylas – Yauri, de composición calco-alcalina con presencia de pórfidos activos, que están intruyendo sedimentos clásticos – carbonatados del Jurásico – Cretáceo. En dicho "belt" se emplazan importantes yacimientos tipo pórfido y skarn de cobre y molibdeno y oro como los Chancas, Cotabambas, Las Bambas, etc.

The widening of the Panama Canal to approximately 130 feet (40 m) for its entire length began just a few years ago. The original expansion program was slated for completion in 18 to 20 years, but has recently been reduced for completion within the next four years. This means that a tremendous amount of blasting at simultaneous points along the canal, by both the Panama Canal Commission (PCC) and many subcontractors, is necessary to achieve the new completion deadline. The accelerated program also imposed many logistical concerns, since marine trafIic is always heavy and cannot be stopped for blasting. Because some of the large and heavy cargo vessels clear the bottom of the canal by only about 6 feet ( 2 m), the blasting cannot result in any large boulders into the center of the canal, for fear of grounding and damaging a vessel, not to mention the traffic delays and lost income of approximately 1 to 2 million dollars per day.

The Bureau of Mines is developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in municipal incinerator residues. This report describes the first phase of the research, in which reliable methods for sampling and analyzing municipal residues were established and the composition and characteristics of the residues were determined. Samples were obtained from a variety of grate-type furnaces and also from a rotary kiln furnace. The samples were processed on a batch basis and separated into their natural categories by a variety of methods including screening, magnetic separation, air separation techniques, and handpicking. The main components of the residues were determined to be metal and metal oxides, glass, and ash.

The theory and practice followed by the Bureau of Mines in investigating electrical equipment4/ made for service in gassy mines are of particular interest not only to manufacturers but also to those organizations that deal with safety anal inspection at the mines. This publication purposes to discuss the theory upon which tests of equipment in explosive atmospheres are based and to consider inspection and other matters pertaining to investigations made by the Bureau in ascertaining whether a machine merits approval. Development of Barrick Gold?s Pierina Gold Mine in north-central Peru requires construction of a waste dump for disposal of non-ore grade materials stripped from the open pit to expose the ore. The waste dump site is located near the open pit in a U-shaped valley that is underlain by thin colluvial and morainal soils with locally thick peats and glaciolacustrine deposits. Bedrock underlying the site consists of variably weathered volcanics. The site is subject to moderately high seasonal rainfall and significant seismicity. The geotechnical quality of the waste rock is highly variable, ranging from low quality, degradable, soil-like materials containing appreciable quantities of silt and clay, to high quality, hard, durable, blocky waste rock. A hybrid dump design concept was developed that requires in-pit segregation of high and low quality waste, and selective placement of materials in the dump to maximize stability and enhance internal and subsurface drainage. The design includes a rock drain beneath the dump along the axis of the valley and a series of connected finger drains. Extensive peripheral diversions and stormwater control measures to inhibit infiltration of precipitation are also included. This paper discusses the unique challenges presented by the site and waste materials, the design methodology and stability analyses, and planned monitoring systems.

This paper describes the application of finite element analysis to simulate the static and quasi-static pile load tests in different drainage conditions. The possible effect of excess pore water pressure will be studied from the simulations results. The results show that the drainage condition has effect on the bearing capacity of a pile derived from the quasi-static pile load test. The excess of pore pressure reduces the pile toe resistance while it increases the pile shaft resistance. The factors which influence the effect of excess pore pressure are also discussed.

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. Mining and metallurgical processing companies that have adopted the principles of good environmental management often find it difficult to carry out an environmental assessment that yields meaningful opportunities for improved performance. This topic was investigated by means of a case study of a South African Base Metal Refinery (BMR) producing primarily nickel. A process-based Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was carried out on the refining process, with the environmental impacts related to the production of reagents and utilities forming part of the assessment. The lifecycle inventory (LCI) was based on plant operating data spanning 31 months of production, from which a baseline environmental profile could be generated and interpreted to indicate the main sources of potential environmental impacts. Consequently, opportunities for improved environmental performance could be identified from the LCA model, which expressly related potential environ-mental liability to specific sub-processes in the assessed industrial operation. The on-site steam plant was found to be the primary source of potential environmental impacts in most of the impact categories considered. In closing, the paper discusses some of the limitations encountered in use of the LCA method. External Shock Mitigation (ESM) is being studied as a possible means of retrofitting existing buried structures to provide additional protection from ground shock. As part of this study, two tests were conducted on four ESM models and a control structure. The test articles were placed at a carrnon distance and subjected to the ground motions created by a buried explosive charge consisting of 2,ODO pounds of nitranethane (NM). Adequate instrumentation data were obtained to assess the response of the four ESM models. The assessment relied heavily on direct comparison of horizontal motions measured in the models, with similar measurements in the control structure. From the tests, it was observed that peak accelerations were reduced by a factor of 5 by the ESM. However, the particle velocities and displacements were not significantly affected by theEIS.

Mining has one of the highest annual average fatality rates among major US industries. Health and safety dangers have been inherent to mining since the early days of picks and shovels. Even though miners’ health and safety has improved over the years, mining is still one of the most dangerous occupations. Mining was traditionally a low tech industry. It is now driven by competitive pressures to go high-tech by using programmable electronics (PE) for machine control, atmospheric monitoring and material processing. The industry’s experience with the functional safety of PE is limited compared with other industries. Thus, PE is an emerging technology for mining that can potentially create or worsen hazards.

Within the famous Harrods department store, a new lift shaft has been constructed, servicing a depth of 22m below ground level as well as the existing 6 storeys of the store. The shaft will connect with a new goods tunnel which is to be excavated beneath the shop, as well as new floor space above ground level which has resulted from the infilling of a previously existing lightwell within the store. The construction of the deep shaft while maintaining uninterrupted use of the store by the Client led to a number of innovative solutions being undertaken. Empirical assessments were made of settlements anticipated from the construction process, which took place within a congested environment of existing foundations. Various elements were designed and installed to mitigate the effects of the inevitable ground movement on the surrounding overlying structure, which supported sensitive high quality finishes and mechanical and electrical installations The reinforced concrete lining of the shaft was contained within a cofferdam of minipiles. The minipile placement accuracy (1 in 150) was vital as it could not interfere with the subsequent tunnelling works. As the scheme progressed this became even more critical since the minipiles were needed as support for parts of the permanent works This paper describes:- the high quality placement and control of the minipiled cofferdam, the methods employed in assessing ground movements and the techniques used to mitigate against the effects of these movements.

Stoping is one of the widely adapted methods in underground mining. In this method, fanned or parallel holes are often drilled from a top sill down to a sub- level in the ore zone and blasted ring by ring into a stope for excavation. At Brunswick Mine of Canada, this technique has been used daily in conducting production blasts. However, when mining into the West Ore Zone, it has been identified strategically that a mass stope blast, involving the blasting of rock from the 3-sub level down to the 1-sub level, should be considered to ensure the safe operation and regaining of access to the trapped main ore zone. The challenge of this mass blast lies in the control of ground vibration and precise timing for blasting 800 holes drilled in six blocks from three different levels within 6.5 seconds, to allow sufficient void to be created in each level for the muck moving in order from the upper to the lower levels without bridging. This paper describes stope blast simulations using a discrete element computer code for modeling blast-induced rock displacement in conjunction with a precision electronic programmable delay timing system for various stope geometries including a drop raise blast at the start of the mass blast. The modeling concept is also described in the paper.

"More efficient drilling and blasting techniques have shown measurable improvements in throughput at the Barrick Goldstrike wet grinding mill.A decrease in throughput at the autoclave, due to increasingly hard ore, was identified in early 2002. A team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas participated closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative to ensure that it would address the needs of both groups, with the target of improving throughput in future years, despite the projected harder ores. Plant studies were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting could positively influence throughput. At the Goldstrike mill the greatest opportunity from the D2M initiative is realized on the hardest ore. Grinding throughput for softer ore, <15 kWh/st, can meet or exceed the downstream pressure oxidation requirements. Grinding throughput for harder ore, >15 kWh/st, is limited by the SAG milling capacity. Better fragmentation in the D2M ore, as demonstrated by image analysis, increased throughput 5% to 10% (25 to 50 stph) compared to the standard mining methods.Better fragmentation and a subsequent increase in mill throughput were achieved through the use of:1) Electronic caps for more precision and flexibility, as well as for allowing extremely fast shots.2) Explosives with a higher velocity of detonation (VOD), to provide for improved shock energy.3) Improved distribution of the explosives by decreasing pattern spacing.INTRODUCTIONThe Barrick Goldstrike Open-Pit group, along with the Process division, began experimenting with novel blasting technology and techniques to improve mill throughput in the spring of 2001. Since 1974, a large amount of data has been developed concerning the physical properties and stability characteristics of waste generated by the mining and preparation of bituminous coal. However, very little information has been developed on the properties and characteristics of anthracite waste. During this Bureau of Mines research project, coarse anthracite breaker refuse from five sites in eastern Pennsylvania was sampled and the physical properties, which indicate stability characteristics, were determined in the laboratory. Coarse anthracite breaker refuse is quite similar to coarse bituminous refuse in chemical and mineralogical composition. However, the physical properties of the anthracite waste materials tested are different from those of coarse bituminous refuse. For the coarse anthracite breaker refuse tested, the average maximum laboratory density is 113.2 lb/ft3, the average angle of internal friction (direct shear) and average cohesion are 30.2° and 2.6 psi, respectively, and the average permeability (four sites) is 1.24 x 10-2 cm/sec. Stability analyses were conducted on six theoretical anthracite waste embankments. These analyses show the effects on minimum safety factors of geometry, phreatic surface level, and physical properties.

The area around Big Bell was actively explored and sporadically mined for gold from 1904 onwards. The lease was named Big Bell in 1913. The property became established as a major mining centre with the development of the Big Bell underground mine in 1936. Mining operations commenced in late 1937 and ceased in January 1955, after milling 5.56 million tonnes of ore and producing nearly 21 tonnes of gold. In 1969 Australian Consolidated Minerals Ltd (A.C.M.) acquired the deposit then explored it alone and in joint venture until the current joint venture agreement with a subsidiary of Placer Pacific Limited (PPL) was negotiated in 1984. Following exploration and evaluation of near surface mineralisation, and a reassessment of the remnant pillars underground, the concept of a large open pit in conjunction with an underground mine evolved. The feasibility study was completed in October 1987, and the decision to go ahead was formally announced on 2nd December 1987. Placer Dome Technical Services Ltd were contracted to be the Project Managers, commencing construction on site early in January 1988 and handing the plant over to the operators 13 months later. The capital cost of the project at handover was estimated to be $133 million. The operating team commenced pre-production stripping of the open pit on 1st May 1988. By 31st January 1989 almost 16.0 million tonnes had been stripped and 350,000 tonnes of ore stockpiled.

Dilution reduction is one of the areas that offer metal mines an opportunity to increase revenue and reduce costs, resulting in enhanced profits. Effective dilution control programmes require interaction on a multi-disciplinary level. This paper outlines recent initiatives undertaken at Konkola Mine to reduce dilution and increase revenue. The increase in revenue arising from reduced dilution and high factors between in situ and delivered to mill grades were quantified and amount to close to U$ 1.0 million per one per cent improvement in grade factor at a 75c/lb copper price. Sources of dilution from open and in?stope mining methods practised at the mine were identified and a multi-disciplinary dilution control forum set up to control these. Among the major achievements were the introduction of low dilution in-stope mining methods; the introduction of Gemcom geological and mining planning software to replace traditional pencil and paper methods, leading to better in situ estimation and production planning; enhanced control in open stopes through dilution awareness among mining production personnel; location of critical secondary development ends in correct positions; enhanced blast hole control; tracking of development waste by metal tracers and monthly tally; implementation of a cavity monitoring system to check over-breaks in open stopes; and setting up of a stope history database. The results from the cavity monitoring system showed that stopes with over-breaks of 5 metres or less could be controlled to break along the hangingwall contact.

Turbidite-hosted, mesothermal lode gold deposits in Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Buller Terrane, western South Island have a similar geological history and genesis to the Paleozoic lode gold deposits ofVictoria, Australia and Nova Scotia, Canada. In all three regions the gold deposits are hosted by interbedded meta-sandstone and meta-argillite that have been folded and regionally metamorphosed to greenschist facies, and locally in Nova Scotia to amphibolite facies. The gold deposits are typically narrow, structurally controlled quartz veins associated with dilatant zones in reverse faults or fold-related fractures. The principal vein types include: bedding parallel or concordant veins, discordant veins, saddle reefs, and stockwork veins. En-echelon and "ac" type veins are sometimes also gold-bearing in Nova Scotia. The contrasting competency of the host meta-argillite and meta-sandstone beds is an important factor in vein formation, particularly for the bedding parallel veins, which are typically developed within meta-argillite beds or along the contacts between meta-argillite and meta-sandstone. Veins found within meta-sandstone units are generally discordant. The deposits in Victoria are well known for their bedding-parallel veins, saddle reefs ( Bendigo ) and leather jacket reefs (Ballarat). Bedding-parallel veins are also common in Nova Scotia , along with a few examples of saddle reefs. In contrast, vein formation probably occurred later in the deformation history of the Reefton and Lyell goldfields, with most veins being bedding discordant and more typically aligned with the axial plane cleavage of the folds rather than bedding planes. The quartz lodes in one deposit, Globe-Progress, strike approximately perpendicular to the bedding and fold axes. No saddle reefs have been recorded from the Buller Terrane. Mesothermal vein morphology reflects the amount of fmite strain, the strain rate, competency contrasts, lithotypes, and the confirming pressures to which the system was exposed. On the basis of comparable depositional depths and rheologies of the host rocks, a controlling factor influencing the development of different vein styles (and timing) might be finite strain, as exemplified by the tightness of folding in the host rocks. Folding appears to be tighter in the Victorian rocks than in either the Buller Terrane or Nova Scotian rocks.
