The development of the potential supply analytic system has advanced to the point that quantitative estimates of economically recoverable resources can be made as the final step of the traditional regional mineral resource assessment process. In 1983, the BOM and the ADGGS jointly developed a methodology to quantitatively assess the potential for undiscovered yet economically recoverable minerals within a designated geographic area. This methodology was first applied in the assessment of the undiscovered mineral potential of the Kantishna Hills, Alaska (White et al., 1987). At that time the assessment procedure combined a series of technical judgements regarding the major geologic, engineering and economic factors that influenced the occurrence and exploitation of mineral resources in the Kantishna Hills area. Since then the methodology has been further developed and enhanced, particularly with respect to the engineering and economic analysis components. The resulting Potential Supply Analysis System (PSAS) was recently used to evaluate the economic potential of selected types of undiscovered precious-metal deposits in the Tonopah quadrangle of Nevada (Gunther, et al., 1988) and, with some enhancements, has been used to estimate the' economic value of the undiscovered mineral potential of the WMNRA/SNCA study area. The PSAS has been designed to address five basic questions about the mineral potential of an area: 1) What alternative states of geologic nature are possible in the area of interest (e.g. How many and what types of undiscovered deposits could be present and what might be their grade, tonnage and depth attributes?) ?;

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

On December 2013 a MEMU exploded at a blasting site in Norway, after burning for more than two hours. This paper describes the analyses made to determine the actual yield of the explosion, the lessons learned from the event and the actions taken as a consequence. The conclusions of the analysis were the following: - The yield of the explosion was 650-1450 kg TNT. In terms of AN and ANE they correspond to 1300 – 3700 kg AN, or 950 – 2450 kg ANE or ANE/AN blend. These quantities are 8 to 31 % of the explosive precursors in the truck. The burning of the truck and its load for two and a half hours had consumed more than two thirds (perhaps up to 90 %) of the explosive precursor material.

Helical piles and ground anchors were used to meet critical design and constructability requirements for an urban forest Canopy Walk at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta, GA. The 12-foot wide pedestrian walkway path was to be nestled among the treetops of a forest, extending to 600 ft. in length, and soaring 40 ft. high above the forest floor. Of particular concern during construction was that the foundation system for the temporary steel shoring system had to be non-invasive to the subsoil, could not damage the forest floor, trees, root systems, or foliage, and upon completion of the concrete walkway pour, could be removed, again without disturbing the subsoil. Accubrace, Inc. designed and installed all the helical foundation types, as well as provided steel braces, typically used in Tilt-Up building construction, for the walkway project. The braces, some extending to 43 ft. in length, were used to provide lateral support against wind loads for the walkway form. In addition, the braces acted as secondary support for lateral loads during the placement of wet concrete along the 600 ft. length of the walkway. Helical foundation products installed included vertical compression piles, ground anchors for tension rods, and ground anchors for the braces. The installation of the piles and anchors was particularly challenging since the forest floor elevation varied as much as 50 ft. due to the presence of a ravine. Information is provided on the subsoil conditions, required loads, design, installation, and acceptance criteria for each helical product type installed for the project. The results of vertical and lateral load tests on the helical piles in the pre-construction phase, conducted in conformance to project specifications are presented. Photographs to illustrate the nature and complexity of the project are included. The concrete pour for the walkway was successfully completed on December 12, 2009, and the walkway was opened for visitors in May, 2010.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH/PRL) conducted a series of large-scale experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of optical flame detectors, photoelectric smoke detectors, and combined ionization and photo­electric smoke detectors for rapidly detecting mining equipment cab fires. The detec­tor alarm times were then used to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to suppress cab material fires. This paper discusses the types of fire detectors tested, the experiments that Were conducted, and the results that were obtained. Con-" elusions are that rapid detection of equipment cab fires can be achieved to trigger the discharge of a fire inerting system inside the cab to protect the operator in the cab.

Since the mid-1970s, samples of airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates have been collected in the area of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA), and the University of Minnesota. Indirect sample preparation has consistently been used although other aspects of the sampling methods and sites have varied and analytical procedures were altered over time as more accurate and precise microscopy methods were developed (i.e., phase contrast optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy). In the mid-1970s, levels of airborne fibrous particulate in the Silver Bay area averaged from 0.00030 to 0.03 f/ml. This level was significantly greater than levels of similar particulates in the St. Paul, MN area, although two of the Silver Bay sampling sites, considered individually, did not indicate levels of fibrous particulate markedly different than that seen in St. Paul. More recent sampling data (i.e., 1990?2001) indicate mean concentration of airborne fibrous particulates (amphibole-like fibrous particulates) of 0.0020 f/ml with a range of values from 0.0001 to 0.0140 f/ml. Such levels are not significantly different from those seen in other non-urban environments in the US and Europe. Concentrations of fibrous particulates in water samples were higher in the mid-1970 when iron ore tailings were being deposited in Lake Superior, but since the tailings have been deposited on land waterborne levels of fibrous particulate in the Beaver River have remained relatively constant averaging in the range of 7.5 MFL. This level is only slightly in excess of the current EPA drinking water standard for fibrous particulates. Review and consideration of this data is important in determining the potential health risks associated with airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates in the areas of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a mobile bridge-type cross-pit belt conveyor system in conjunction with a large dragline to excavate and transport spoils in a typical Western surface coal mine. The studies show that such a system could be built to survive operational and climatic mining conditions, and that its implementation would offer a reduction in both acquisition and operating costs versus conventional mining units of comparable capacity. Reclamation costs can also be significantly reduced, and the total reclamation process accelerated, making the cross-pit conveyor system attractive to mine owners and environmentalists alike.

Owing to the number of chemical processes now in use for the separation of metals from their ores, and the consequent employment of chemicals at the mine, it is sometimes necessary to be able to produce them on the spot. This particularlyapplies to sulphuric acid which may be required for the manufacture of chlorine and of sulphate of copper, or for the treatment of'sulphides and other purposes. It can be made from brimstone for rather less than £3 per ton, but when delivered to any distance from the works, the cost of packages and other charges would amount to more than the value of the acid.I hope therefore, that to any of the members of the Institute who may find it necessary to make sulphuric acid for their own requirements an outline of the process, and some details of the plant etc may be useful, and perhaps lead to their devising improvements, mechanical or otherwise. Though acid can be made from pyrites in Europe for about 15/- per ton, it is probable that for most metaIIurgical purposes the quantity required. and the uncertainty as to how long it would be needed, would make it advisable to spend as little as possible on plant, and so use brimstone, though more expensive, I have therefore given no details of pyrites burning, which is very fully treated by Prof, Lunge in his work on " Sulphuric Acid and Alkali."

The New Zealand microcontinent is relatively well endowed with gold deposits; its past gold production per unit area of 3.2 kg/km2 ranks high on a world scale. Total recorded production (1857 - 1986) is about 854 000 kg and most of this gold was mined between 1861 and 1920. There has been a strong revival in gold exploration and mining since 1979, with exploration expenditure of around $15 million per annum and a declared gold production in 1986 of 1265 kg (886 kg in 1985). In addition to numerous alluvial gold recovery plants working small to medium sized deposits (mainly in Westland and Otago), there are five medium to large projects that have started production (Martha Hill), or have reached advanced stages of construction (Grey River dredge), permitting (Golden Cross and Macraes) or exploration (Globe-Progress). Theories of ore genesis. have both practical and philosophical application-practical in that they influence our search for new ore bodies; philosophical in that they provide a test for our theories of petrogenesis-and our ingenuity.For example, the theory of granitization requires an explanation of ore genesis compatible with the general concepts of granitization.Our understanding of some processes of ore formation, such as supergene enrichment, or the formation of residual lateritic iron ores, is so complete as to permit of nq controversy.For other ores, like the oolitic iron ores of England and France, and elsewhere, or the segregations of chromite or ilmenite in basic igneous rocks, the broad principles are generally agreed on; dispute is limited to details of process.But for a wide range of ore deposits there is no such agreement. Completely incompatible hypotheses are advanced to explain' identical facts, and we have difficulty in finding new facts or criteria that will distinguish unambiguously between them.In thinking about such ores, a co:n;venient starting point is provided by Schneiderhohn's (1953) fourfold division of ore deposits:1. The secondary hydrothermal ore deposits occurring in Mesozoic-Neozoic cover strata of Europe.2. The "regenerated" younger ore deposits in Alpine type mountain chains.3. Post-Cambrian primary hydrothermal ore deposits.4. Ore deposits of the PreCambrian shields.To these we may add a fifth group:5. Stratigraphically controlled sulphide deposits.

This study was undertaken to generate a locally relevant guideline for the socio-economic aspects of mine closure for South African closure practitioners and decision makers. It should also represent a resource for interested and involved stakeholders. Mine closure, and its related post-closure social, environmental and economic characteristics, is part of the lifecycle of mining operations, given the finite nature of the ore resource. Many coal mines are anticipated to close in the next ten to fifteen years in Mpumalanga, as the epicentre of the industry shifts towards the Waterberg. Social aspects of mine closure have been historically underplayed, and under researched. Coaltech thus commissioned two studies, the first of which examined the closure dynamics of 36 mines in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. A follow-up study (July 2007) focusing on Mpumalanga3,4 confirmed some of the results of the first study. It also contained broad guidelines for mine closure covering social and labour planning, job creation, the use of mine infrastructure, developmental incentives, and environmental rehabilitation.

Recent studies by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health indicate that shear loading contributes significantly to failure of bolts used for rock reinforcement in coal mine roofs, Laboratory tests on 17 bolts were conducted to study the behavior of roof bolts subjected to shear loading over a range of axial bolt loads, Fourteen strain gauges were attached to each bolt to measure axial and bending loads at seven locations along its length. The instrumented bolts were grouted through two high-strength concrete blocks, and axial tension was applied to as much as 75% of yield strength. With the block interface acting as a failure plane, shear loads were applied to the blocks at a constant rate of displacement to the ultimate strength of the bolts. The tests characterized the relationship of axial bolt loads to shear forces across a rock bedding plane and measured the distribution of axial and bending strain along the length of the bolts. 'These results will improve the selection of roof reinforcement in mine areas where high shear stresses are present, thus improving the safety of miners working in these areas.

The development of a process for upgrading offgrade titanium metal by electrorefining in molten salt led to an investigation of the electrotransfer characteristics of selected metals when alloyed with the titanium to be refined. Previous tests on seven binary titanium alloys showed that the degree of transfer of the alloying constituent depends on the constituent and on the operating procedurese.5 This report describes tests on electrorefining ternary mixtures of titanium with selected metallic elements. Ten alloys were prepared from high purity titanium and 2-1/2 percent of each of the metal pairs selected from the same elements used in the binary study; manganese, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, tin, molybdenum, aluminum. Operating variables were similar to those investigated in the binary alloy study that gave minimum alloy metal transfer. The data presented indicate the transfer characteristics of the various metals and combinations tested relative to each other.

At least one US senator believes that the events of Sept. 11, 2001 made many citizens see the need for the country to become more self-reliant on its growing energy needs. Even before that tragic day, however, the Bush administration was making a strong push to open up more public land for energy and natural resource development.

This report summarizes completed research pertaining to the reaction of human subjects exposed to Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) stressors during escape conditions (viz., resistance breathing, C02 breathing, hot air breathing, and static positive facepiece positive pressure breathing) and the development of an automated breathing and metabolic simulator (ABMS). Volume I contains summarizes of the studies performed under this contract. Volume II is an appendix which contains more detailed descriptions of these studies.

When defining a ?megaproject,? one need only to look at Seattle, WA?s State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project. This $3.1-billion project is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and includes the use of the world?s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, for as large as the Alaskan Way project is ? especially given the size of the TBM being used ? there are several other megaprojects underway around the world. Each has its own challenges that require innovative design techniques and financing arrangements, as well as variations on established tunneling technologies. So it was that 266 tunneling and underground construction professionals ? owners, contractors and engineers ? convened in Seattle in November for the Cutting Edge Conference on Megaprojects. This was the second joint meeting between the Underground Construction Association of SME and the North American Tunneling Journal. The first joint conference took place in April 2012 in Miami, FL and attracted 238 attendees. A third joint conference, to be held in 2014, is in the planning stage. The key reason Seattle was chosen as the site of the megaprojects conference is the Alaskan Way Viaduct project. Before the conference began, many of the attendees were able to visit the project and get a close look at Bertha, the Hitachi Zosen earth pressure balance TBM that is boring the tunnel. In addition, the conference included an exhibit that attracted 20 industry suppliers, up from 10 the previous year in Miami. The 25 presentations during the two-day conference covered all aspects of the tunneling and underground construction of megaprojects. Topics included the Alaskan Way Viaduct project; considerations for procurement and contracting; political risk, financing and insurance; international megaprojects; risk and risk sharing and project delivery. Each session concluded with panel discussions.

ABSTRACTMechanised cut and fill stoping in the Racecourse orebodies between II and 9 levels was started in 1964.Five stopes are in progress over the two level interval, extracting the full strike length (600-2,000 ft) of each orebody without transverse pillars.Each stope is served by a central 10 ft by 12 ft service intake ventilation raise and an 8 ft by 8 ft return air raise at each end of the stope. Each stope is divided into two sections for drilling. firing. mucking, and fillingto maintain steady production. All equipment is kept in the stope for one level lift stoping. Gardner-Denver 2 boom jumbos are used for uphole drilling and Wagner ST 5 Scooptrams for loading and transport to ore passes located in the footwall of the orebody. A Wagner PTIO is used for materials handling and scaling of the stope backs.Mill tailings, after one stage of cycloning are used to fill the stope, one section at a time. About 80 per cent of the water is removed by decantation while the remainder percolates through hessian-covered pipes and boxes.The ore is passed to 11 level where it is hauled by the 3 ft 6 in. gauge train to the tipple at the shaft area. The ore is crushed underground before hoisting to the surface.A performance of about 100 ton/manshift is achieved by the drilling, blasting, and mucking crews in the stopes.
