In the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program, the magnitude of the abutment loading adjacent to a gob area is calculated using an ?abutment angle? concept. The extent of the abutment loading is determined solely as a function of depth from an empirically derived equation. In the recommended calibration method for LaModel, it was believed that the empirical equations for calculating the magnitude and extent of the abutment load, as used in ARMPS, were the best available methods for determining these critical overburden loading values. Therefore, similar calculations were implemented in the LaModel calibration method. However, the latest in situ stress measurements of abutment loading performed in the United States and Australia have shown that there can be significant deviations in the measured abutment magnitude and extent as compared to the predicted values from the empirical formulas used in ARMPS and LaModel. It seems reasonable that the overburden geology, depth, extraction panel width, and mining height should have a significant effect on the extent and magnitude of the abutment load. However, the current empirical formulas do not incorporate many of these significant parameters into determining the abutment load on the pillars. In this paper, stress measurements from US and Australian mines were back-analyzed by using analytical and numerical methods to investigate the measured abutment extent and loading. Ultimately, it was determined that the original empirical abutment extent formula in conjunction with the original ALPS square-decay stress distribution function was supported by the case histories in this paper. Also, for depths less than 900 ft, the average 21° abutment angle was supported by the case histories; however, at depths greater than 900 ft, the abutment angle was found to be significantly less than 21° and should be calculated with a new proposed equation.

The Stress Control Method improves productivity and safety in underground coal mining. The method stabilizes the roofs and floors of mine openings in both shallow and deep coal beds, regardless of whether or not there are ground stability problems. This paper describes the means by which a tapered pillar experiment is used to collect in situ data, which is then used as input for a computer model. The resulting computer model is then used to optimize Stress Control design for the mine under study. The behavior of any underground coal mine is not elastic, as is generally conceived in the conventional view of rock mechanics, but rather is highly time-dependent and site-specific. Unfortunately, conventional rock mechanics methods based on the elastic principle are not able to capture the highly non-elastic nature of ground behavior which actually occurs. To capture actual behavior, a new method of study is required. In this regard, geomechanical study of an underground coal mine may be compared to studying the behavior of a living fish. Its true behavior zannot be understood by examining it "dead in the laboratory. It Is the "live" nature of the coal mine that is required for design optimization of the Stress Control Method in the given mine. The Stress Control Method is based on a time-dependent theory of the global behavior of the mine ground, which generally contradicts the conventional elastic theory of ground behavior. Therefore, site-specific adaptation of the Stress Control Method required a comprehensive understanding of the global behavior of the mine as a function of time and site-specific ground conditions.

The Detroit salt mine is operated by the Detroit Salt Co. It is one of the oldest underground room-and-pillar mines in the United States still in production. Mining at the Detroit salt mine began in 1906 with the sinking of the No. 1 shaft. Mining continued through the years, becoming progressively more modern in its equipment and techniques, until it was closed in 1983. In 1997, after a period of care and maintenance, the newly formed Detroit Salt Co. decided to reopen the mine. Upon completion of an extensive rehabilitation program, salt production resumed in 1998. Production currently continues at a rate of 910kt/a (1 million stpy). To date, the Detroit salt mine has mined more than 45 Mt (50 million st).This mine is unique because it lies under a heavily urbanized area within metropolitan Detroit. The mine and its history make a good case study for the continuing coexistence between the mining industry and its environs.

The production of sulphuric acid at Port Pirie by the contact process began in March 1924 with the commissioning of the Electrolytic Zinc Co.'s roasting and acid plant. This plant, operated by B.H.A.S. Pty. Ltd. on behalf of the E.Z. Co., continued to produce sulphuric acid from the gases evolved when roasting Broken Hill zinc concentrate in mechanically rabbled furnaces until September 1954, when the plant was closed down.In this peri9d of approximately 30 years some 600,000 mono tons of 98·5 per cent sulphuric acid was produced, most of which was used for fertilizer production at Wallaroo and Port Adelaide. During World War II 14,400 mono tons of the above was produced in the form of 20 per cent Oleum and railed to the Salisbury Munitions Factory for use in the production of nitro-glycerine, gun-cotton and T.N.T.In the early post-war period various ways of converting at least some of the sulphur in the gases' discharged to atmosphere from the lead sintering plant were considered until, in 1949, it was decided to erect a modern contact acid plant. Much work remained to be done on the roasting plant to produce a gas of suitable grade for the contact process and also on the design of a purification section suitable for the treatment of D.L. gases.The acid section itself, however, was largely of conventional design and it was therefore decided that this would be erected first. To it was then attached a sulphur-burning section to allow it to operate as a "hot gas" brimstone acid plant until the roasting and gas purification plants had been designed and erected. In this way the urgent need for sulphuric acid in the fertilizer industry would be relieved, to some extent at least, as soon as, possible.

"The large extent of global production and consumption of aggregates from quarries, grabs one´s attention and makes its substantial and essential standpoint in the world today pretty clear. A great amount of aggregates is utilized in civil engineering applications such as road construction, railway industry, concrete production, etc. Considering this fact that igneous rocks display a higher strength and abrasion resistance, this type of rock is preferred in the field of civil engineering. For all these applications, rock quality assurance is a key factor and certainly unavoidable, and it has great influence on the quality of constructions in civil engineering. One of the major problems encountered by both the producers and users of igneous rock is the fact that, with the passage of time, some specific rocks lose their strength, up to a complete loss of structure or in other words, their disintegration and degradation. In the last decades, different methods and procedures such as Glycol test, methylene blue dye test, as well as the Los Angeles test have been introduced to distinguish these rock properties, and to identify these problems. However, as these methods are time consuming, hard to perform, only to be applied to hand-piece samples, requiring special laboratory equipments, and only possible to be accomplished under laboratory conditions, their application has always been limited to some specific cases, and they are neither recommendable nor advantageous. In addition, these methods provide partially different results for the same rock. To address this widespread quality management problem of the quarry industry, a relatively quick, easy and user-friendly approach is necessary. It calls for a systematic solution with a device that can simply be used day to day in a mine for quality control of the quarry´s daily production. This scientific research is concentrated on developing a systematic method for early recognition and diagnosis of rock quality, in order to control and manage the quality of the quarry production in advance. This method was developed, based on the procedure of the magnetic susceptibility measurement. The obtained values can lead to valuable information regarding the quality of the rock and allows the quality control process to be accomplished and performed at the borehole location. This approach has been assessed through extensive field and laboratory studies. A detailed and comprehensive discussion will be made on the results of the experiments. The advantages and impacts of the application of this method, on increasing the reserves and environmental protection are also discussed."

There are two kinds of problems concerning the elements of a population : the first is to estimate the proportion of some specific kind of element in the population, e.g. the amount of gold in a block of ground (equals population) or the proportion of mercury in a sample; the second is to estimate the length, breadth, volume, etc., of a specific kind of element, e.g. the grain size of quartz grains in a beach sand or the size, shape and arrangement of lenses of ore in an ore deposit. Given a specific objective, a bounded population, identified elements and the element characteristics of interest, it is then necessary to select a sample of the elements from the population and the problem of sampling requires a decision on how to select the sample. It is also necessary to establish, either by heuristic analysis or empirically, based on long experience, the model frequency distribution of the desired element characteristics: in general, constant-probability models are used as models, the binomial or Poisson for count data and the normal distribution for measurements (or their transformed equivalents). The objective of sampling then becomes to obtain an appropriate statistical estimate of the desired population parameter: for example, the estimators may be the mean (X) and variance (a2): these should be unbiased sufficient estimators of their corresponding parameters (u, a2, respectively). Statistical tests are performed in order to determine that the estimators are of the appropriate kind: all statistical tests are designed to test against bias of a specific kind, although they are stated as tests against randomness. Given a random sample of some population, the estimators are usually stable and adequate to solve the sampling problem. Random samples are simple to define but exceedingly difficult to achieve in practice: in selecting a sample, if every element in the population has an equal chance of occurring, then the sample is a random sample. Interaction between the arrangement of elements in a population, i.e. its structure, and the sample selection process frequently introduces bias—that is, some elements have more chance than others of appearing in the sample and, hence, the sample is not random. An algorithm for dealing pragmatically with this aspect of the sampling problem offers one way of achieving random samples and, therefore, adequate estimators. Examples of the use of this algorithm on various kinds of geological populations, in both field and laboratory, illustrate the requirements for solving sampling problems and the achievement of appropriate estimators.

The South African platinum mines in the Bushveld Complex (BC) have unique features that distinguish them from the gold mines. They have a higher horizontal stress closer to the surface, lower occurrence of seismic activity (caused mainly by pillar failure), and are sited in an area of high geothermal gradient. One of the future challenges of platinum mining is the increasing temperatures as the mining depth increases. High temperatures invariably bring about higher ventilation costs and require different approaches to human factors and ergonomics. Excavation stability would also be another area of concern due to increasing stresses. In this investigation, the effect of temperature on the physical and chemical properties of selected Bushveld rocks (chromitite, pyroxenite, norite, leuconorite, gabbronorite, mottled anorthosite, varitextured anorthosite, granite, and granofels) was studied by means of optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy using energy-dispersive Xray spectrometry (SEM-EDX). The rock specimens were heated in a temperature-controlled oven a rate of 2°C /min to 50°C, 100°C, and 140°C and kept at temperature for five consecutive days. Samples were allowed to cool to ambient temperature (approximately 20°C) before image capturing. Micrographs of the specimens were taken before and after heat treatment. All the SEM samples were also subjected to heating and cooling on alternate days for ten days in order to observe the effect of repeated heating and cooling on the rocks. The results of the optical microscopy analyses showed minor physical changes in the rocks. The SEM images revealed that cracks initiating at lower temperatures extend with increasing temperature. The chemical analyses showed that the temperature range considered in this research is not high enough to induce changes in the chemical composition of rock samples.

Having developed a methodology for estimating mining-induced seismicity resulting from slip along geological discontinuities in 2003, in this paper, the importance of measurements are high-lighted in the study of caving and seismic source mechanisms as applied to mine designs. Geotechnical data is analyzed from four case studies to address cave condition, load transfer, and potential effects on stability and resource recovery in four Utah mines using measurements and observations conducted over the last three decades. Cave conditions are evaluated on the basis of measurements in the gob of a western U.S. operation mining under the massive Castlegate Sandstone and indirectly using the results of measurements and boundary-element modeling at panel boundaries at a mine where strata behave elastically. Together with subsidence measurements and microseismic monitoring, regional caving and load transfer in multiple-panel extractions are addressed while the effectiveness of barrier pillars in reducing stress and seismic response where mining under massive stratigraphic units is analyzed using measurements and three-dimensional computer modeling.

This report deals with the feasibility of the use of vocoders as an integral part of a mine electromagnetic voice communication system. Limitations imposed by the nature of the transmission path, background noise and equipment are examined. Some properties of vocoders and apparent advantages of the use of vocoders in a mine communication are discussed. The conclusion is reached that the man-made noise level will ultimately determine the workability of such a system.

I NT RODUCTION Theory indicates that linear water-floods should exhibit scaling and stabilization properties in both oil-wet and water-wet porous media'. Experimental verification of these proper-ties in oil-wet media was obtained some time ago', and more recently, Perkins', employing a high permeability unconsoli dated sand and a low oil-to-water viscosity ratio, has obtained flooding data in a water-wet medium which follow the pattern of scaling and stabilization. Also, Root and Calhoun3 have found similar trends in the displacement of gas by liquids from unconsolidated sands. In general, however, the experimen-tal evidence appears still somewhat conflicting since scaling and stabilization of water floods in water-wet media has not been observed in most of the studies to date'.".'. The purpose of this paper is to provide a more comprehensive picture of waterflood behavior in water-wet media and to corroborate the validity of the scaling and stabiliza-tion concepts. The need for differentiating between the intrinsic nature of water-oil displacements inside a porous medium and perturbating secondary end effects is discussed, pertinent experimental procedures are outlined and the results of flooding tests conducted at low and at high oil-to-water viscosity ratios on con- solidated, water-wet Alundum cores are analyzed. END EFFECTS IN WATER-WET MEDIA Outlet End Effects The peculiar feature of the outlet end effect in water-wet cores is that it not only results in an excessive wetting phase saturation at the outflow face,'.' but that it also retards the moment of water breakthrough: i.e., causes an undue delay in the appearance of water in the produced effluent. Conditions existing in a water-wet core when water first arrives at the outflow face are schematically shown in Fig. 1. At this flooding stage the saturation distribution, Fig. la, has not yet been distorted by the outlet end effect. A water-invaded pore at the outlet core face, opening into the oil-filled void space between the end of the core and the end plate of the flooding cell, is illustrated in Fig. lb. The curvature of the water-oil interface is concave toward the outlet, and the pressure on the water side of the interface is lower than on the oil side by an amount equal to a certain capillary pressure (Fig. lc). Before the water (of this particular pore) can be produced from the core, it is apparent that the pressure in the water phase must exceed that in the oil outside the core. Accordingly. when water first reaches the outlet face, it will not leave the core but will accumulate inside, and only oil will be produced. Eventually, as the water injection is continued. sufficient pressure is built up in the water to reverse the curvature of the interfaces in the outlet pores, and only then will water be produced from the core. This stage, illustrated in Fig. 2. corresponds to the conventional "water breakthrough" observed in flooding experiments. For purposes of discussion, it is convenient to distinguish between the flooding stage at which water first arrives at the outlet face of a core (Fig. 1) and the stage at which water is first produced from the core ( Fig. 2). Luminescence excited by electron bombardment, or cathodoluminescence (CL), is a very useful tool in petrographic examination of rocks, minerals and ores. Differences in luminescence colors and intensities allow detection and delineation of mineral species and composition zones difficult to separate visually by normal polarized light microscopy. The cold cathode CL chamber at Indiana University is used with a binocular microscope that has interchangeable attachments for a normal film camera, a digital camera and a fiber optic spectrometer. This allows imaging of the specimens as well as limited spectrographic analysis of the emitted luminescence. The chamber on this CL unit is large enough to accommodate several thin sections, polished mounts, grain mounts or rock slices at one time. Luminescence petrographic techniques were used to study alkali syenites and carbonatites from the Arkansas. Alkali feldspars in the syenites reveal a history of growth, fenitization and replacement through color and intensity differences. Primary orthoclase luminesces bright blue and is often zoned with a duller blue overgrowth of microcline. Fenitization of the feldspars is demonstrated by dull to bright red luminescence and replacement veins of albite often have a bright yellow green luminescence. Late microcline and perthites from the syenite pegmatites have a dull yellow to orange luminescence. Easily visible on this background of feldspars are grains of apatite (yellow), fluorite (violet), zircon (greenish), sodalite (orange) and mosandrite (green). Complex pseudoleucite syenites from Magnet Cove, Arkansas show similar minerals but also include xenolithic quartz (violet), manganwollastonite (bright orange), benitoite (intense blue) and lorenzenite (green). Carbonatites from Arkansas contain a wide variety of calcite textures and intensities of luminescence. Grains of carbonatite in well cuttings are easily distinguished from sedimentary calcites by their complex “flame” luminescence and the frequent presence of euhedral apatite grains (yellow). Apatite crystals separated from the Arkansas River Valley carbonatites by acid digestion show complex zoning. The cores of these apatites are yellow luminescing due to CL activation by Mn enrichment while the rims are violet luminescing due to REE enrichment. Complex zonation between the cores and rims is easily visible using CL.

Volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits in ancient, submarine volcanic belts of Australia include mound, lens and sheet-style Zn-rich polymetallic deposits, massive and disseminated pyritic Cu-Au deposits and disseminated, stratabound Au-only deposits. Variation in morphologies, metal ratios, volcanic environments and alteration features indicates there exists a spectrum of deposits from the classic VHMS model, to hybrids between VHMS-porphyry Cu and VHMS-epithermal end members. Zn-rich, polymetallic deposits form eitheron, or just below, the seafloor, whereas the Cu-Au and Au-only deposits form sub-seafloor by replacement of specific volcanic lithologies. Alteration zoned outwards from quartz -> chlorite -> sericite ¦ carbonate is typical of VHMS deposits across the spectrum. Quartz and carbonate alteration is dominant in the Au-only systems,chlorite alteration is commonly developed close to Cu-rich ores, and sericite and carbonate alteration zones are well developed in the stratiform Zn-rich ores. The most useful geochemical vectors for Zn-rich ores are the alteration index [AI=100(MgO + K2O)/(MgO + K2O + CaO + Na2O)], the chlorite-carbonate-pyrite index [CCPI=100(MgO + FeO)/(MgO + FeO + K2O + Na2O)], Mn content of carbonate, Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratio of chlorite,whole-rock Tl, Sb and Ba/Sr ratio, S34S of pyrite, and whole-rock S18O. The most useful vectors for pyritic Cu-Au ores are AI, CCPI, S/Na2O ratio, Na content of white mica, and Fe content of carbonate.

To deftne the capabilities of a nonexplosive excavation concept, the Bureau of Mines conducted reduced-scale laboratory tests of a mechanical excavation tool called a rock splitter. The splitter investigated was capable of applying combinations of radial and axial loads to rock when placed in a predrilled hole. Experiments conducted with the tool in concrete, limestone, and granite proved it capable of excavating all three materials. Break geometry in these three materials was the same, which encourages the prediction of performance in all rocks. The design of the radial-axial loading splitter's feather components significantly affected the tool's performance. It appears the design of this in-hole component should be tailored for the rock to be excavated.

This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large scale pillar collapses in South Africa were caused by weak partings which traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods to determine the strength of pillars are used namely, empirical equations derived from the back analyses of failed and stable cases and numerical modelling tools with an appropriate failure criteria. Both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercise that the results are not extrapolated beyond the range of the data which were used to derive them. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines) that has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value) to design the pillar layouts. Very few collapses have nevertheless been reported and it might even be too conservative an assumption of pillar strength in these mines. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many flawed assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is to study specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling currently provide a solid basis to conduct pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques be utilised when confronted with a pillar design to obtain the best possible insight into the problem.

"The contemplated use of dichloro-difluoro methane in domestic and commercial refrigerating appliances and in air-conditioning equipment for Public buildings and possibly homes, brings attention to the health hazards involved in a wide potential exposure of the public to vapors of another new product, and for the first time to vapors of an organic fluorine compound. The objective in the development of this new refrigerant, however, has been the mitigation of health and explosion hazards in automatic refrigeration, and accordingly these factors have been given primary attention. Early in the development, the Bureau of Mines was requested to make a laboratory study of the toxicity and potential hazard:"" and it was on the basis of the results of this work and the results of a preliminary investigation made in another laboratory5 that the compound has been selected for commercial use. Although the investigation conducted by the Bureau of Mines is still in progress, information has been obtained to indicate the order of the toxicity and the magnitude of the health hazards involved in the use of dichloro-difluoro methane as a refrigerant. The following is a summarized report of the work completed to date:Additionally work rich is in progress at the present time includes a determination of the lethal time-concentration curve for animals and a study of the response of persons within the range of safe concentrations.The writers desire to jive acknowledgment to T E. THE ore treated is almost pure copper pyrites (chalcopyrite) in a gangue of quartz and quartz-felsite. Very little free iron sulphide (pyrite) occurs, and at the time of the erection of the flotation plant the stopes in the oxidized zone had been almostentirely depleted. This zone only extends to a shallow depth, and, below the l00-ft. level, the sulphide for the most part is clean and bright but in the crushed and brecciated parts of the ore channel, where surface water has circulated freely, the gangue is decomposed and kaolinized, and the copper sulphide badly tarnished. This class of ore gave considerable trouble at the mill, but unfortunately, was very limited in quantity. A sample of rich ore assayed-Copper, 21.2 %; iron, 24:.3 %; silica, 28.9 %; sulphur, 25.1%.The concentration in the original mill was effected by handpicking, jigging, and tabling. A considerable portion of the copper mineral arrives at the surface in the form of large lumps of very pure quality, eminently suitable for sorting out by hand.The rich ore is tipped over a grizzly at the shaft bins; the oversize hand-picked, and the undersize bagged direct.

"The technologies used in the mineral processing of ores are being increasingly applied to the identification and remediation of metal contaminated industrial, military and landfill sites. The objective of mineral processing treatment of contaminated site material is to restore the value of the land and to concentrate the contaminants into a very small volume of separated material which, depending upon its nature, can be further processed, marketed, or sent to a landfill. A systematic characterisation of the site material is first undertaken. Bench and pilot testing follows to evaluate criteria for metal separation. The testing may examine one or more physical or physico-chemical reprocessing methods, singly or in combination, for the remediation of the test samples. These mineral processing tests determine the % metal removal fiom the soil and the contaminants concentrated from the medium. The usefulness of mineral processing testing for site remediation flowsheet design and execution is illustrated by the case studies presented. This paper will present the test results of three case studies: an industrial site decontamination, the cleanup of a small arms firing range, and the reclamation of property within a landfill.INTRODUCTIONEnvironmental legislation and our society’s quest for a cleaner environment has led to the application of mineral processing expertise and technology for industrial site decontamination, military site cleanup and landfill reclamation. Although the required level of decontamination varies between jurisdictions, a site becomes a candidate for decontamination once the contaminant concentrations are found to exceed the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) Interim Remediation Criteria for soil (decommissioning guidelines) or applicable provincial guidelines. Upbeat, surprisingly so, might describe the mood at the2002 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Phoenix, AZ. More than 4,000 mineral professionals gathered for three days of education, networking and product perusal. The Annual Meeting featured the theme, “Minerals for the Future@ SME” at the Feb. 25-27 gathering. Meeting attendance reached 4,039along with 479 exhibit booths show-casing 325 companies. Exhibitors found a good mix of industry types:37% from mining, 19% from processing, 20% from manufacturing and 28% from environment, education and government.
