"The danger of autoclaves lies in the high temperatures and pressures that exist in autoclave vessels. The usage of autoclaves will continue to expand in the mining industry because of their efficiency and environmental friendliness. But increasing attention must be paid to ensuring their safety. Safety Instrumented Systems (SISs) play a critical role in autoclave plants by detecting potentially dangerous conditions, taking the plant to a safe state, informing the operator about the plant status and the cause of the trip and expediting safe plant restart. The SIS should ideally be fully integrated with but functionally independent of the Basic Process Control System (BPCS) and provide redundant logic solvers to increase safety and plant availability while reducing spurious trips.INTRODUCTIONWikipedia defines an autoclave as follows: “An autoclave is a pressurized device invented by Charles Chamberland in 1879 designed to heat aqueous solutions above their boiling point to process materials.” A typical autoclave system used in the metallurgical industry includes, besides the autoclave vessel, heat recovery (heater) vessels, high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) feed pumps, vessel lining systems, specialized internals and components, agitators, pressure letdown or flash vessels, isolation and control valves, over 2,000 I/O points and related instrumentation, and emergency relief systems."

Carbon dioxide sequestration by conversion to carbonates has become a promising option for CO2 storage. Experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of CO2 sequestration at ambient conditions using a Ca-rich industrial waste in a carbonate solution. The Ca-rich industrial waste used in this study was lignite fly ash. Fly ash was chosen because it is cheap, available near large CO2 point sources, already in powder form, and reactive due to amorphous properties. In the experimental set-up, CO2 absorption was inferred by monitoring feed and exhaust gas CO2 concentrations. The addition of an alkali to a fly ash-distilled water solution provided a 50% increase in CO2 absorption of the solution. Absorption time also increased by 50% compared to a fly ash-distilled water solution. TGA analysis was used to determine the extent of CO2 sequestration in the carbonate form. At a liquid to solid ratio of 20:1, the conversion of ?free? calcium to carbonates was 75%. A CO2 balance on the system concluded that at the current operating conditions 42% of the total CO2 fed to the system was sequestered in the carbonate form. SEM-EDS analysis of the fly ash particles before and after reaction with CO2 indicated that the carbonate compound being formed was calcium carbonate. The analysis identified rhomboidal structures on the surface of the fly ash particles after reaction with CO2, but not before. These rhomboids are characteristic of calcium carbonate formation and they had higher Ca, C, and O concentrations than the host spheres, suggesting calcium carbonate formation.

Quality assurance and quality control of drilled shafts has become a concern due to difficulties in accurately locating construction anomalies and determining load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts. Various non-destructive evaluation techniques have been developed to estimate the integrity of the concrete in drilled shafts. While these techniques have been widely accepted, variables and unknowns can affect the measurement results. Results are typically difficult to interpret, leading to unnecessary construction delays and possible litigation over shaft integrity. In addition, influences of surrounding ground materials, stress states under different load conditions, and crack and residual stress development during concrete curing further complicate determination of shaft performance. This paper focuses on the evaluation of load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts under various conditions by numerical analysis and modeling.

The spatial distribution of copper grades at the Mansa Mina project is highly variable due to the presence of high grade copper/silver/arsenic breccia bodies. Copper grades within the breccia bodies tend to average about 4.5% copper while grades in the surrounding stockwork average about 1.0%. The breccia is known to occur in the vicinity of significant controlling structures, however, the outline and therefore the thickness of the bodies are far from regular. Due to the high grade of these bodies a significant proportion of the value of the project is derived from the breccia tonnages. The irregularity in the outlines/thickness translates into an uncertainty in the breccia tonnage and therefore in the value of the project. Acknowledging the economic importance of the breccia bodies and the risk associated with the breccia tonnage uncertainty, significant additional drilling has been proposed to both understand the spatial distribution of the breccias and reduce project risk. The costs associated with this additional drilling are not inconsequential; thus, a reasonable question is ‘what value is derived from this additional drilling’? To obtain an answer to this important question, a simulation approach is applied. First the deposit is simulated using the existing drilling and the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Next the proposed drilling program is simulated and the simulated data are added to the existing data. Using this expanded data set a second simulation of the deposit is created and once again the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Using this approach, the reduction in the uncertainty in the resource can be determined. To convert this reduction in uncertainty (or reduction in risk) in the stated resource into a dollar value, a method of defining the increase in the project rate of return necessary to account for risk is presented. Using the two different rates of return, the difference in project NPV and hence the value of additional drilling is determined.

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. The past decade has brought significant changes in the use of risk-based criteria for safety within the U.S. Department of Defense. The Range Commanders Council (RCC) chartered a working group to develop and define risk acceptance criteria for protecting the general public and mission essential personnel from debris from launch ranges. This working group has continued to develop and update RCC Standard 321 as the needs of the ranges and range users have evolved. A revision to RCC Standard 321 is near finalization and will include casualty criteria, guidelines for assessing risks due to other flight hazards in addition to inert debris, and an overall risk management process for range safety. This paper reports on work in progress and includes several precedents which may prove important to the explosives safety community.

This article first explains the mechanism of forming strength in the Jet grouting reinforced foundation, and points out the function of cement hydrates and clay minerals in clayey soil, the reinforced body with the character of long-term growth of strength. Secondly, regarding the strength and the deformation characteristics of compound foundation, the article points out that the stress-strain curve of the jet grouting pile is approximate to hyperbolic curve. Finally, the article cites three examples of application in the construction of the metallurgical industry.

Many industries such as the cement industry handle large quantities of limestone and clay slurries. However, at present very little is known about the flow properties, such as friction loss due to flow of slurries in pipelines. This lack of knowledge has made it often very difficult to calculate the total dynamic head of a proposed slurry handling system, and therefore has often made the selection of correct size slurry handling equipment difficult. Because of lack of knowledge about slurry flow a study of slurry flow theory has been made at the Portland Cement Association's Research and Development Laboratory with the idea of developing a method whereby friction losses due to slurry flow may be predicted for any size pipeline. The flow equations developed have been checked by pilot plant size equipment. DERIVATION OF FLOW EQUATIONS It has been known for some time that limestone and clay slurries handled in cement plants do not flow in the same manner as a Newtonian fluid such as water. When a Newtonian fluid flows the shear stress at any flow velocity is proportional to the rate of shear. This phenomenon can be illustrated by a line (Figure 1). The viscosity of the fluid is the slope of the curve. Thus, the flow properties of the material may be characterized by a single materials constant: viscosity. When a non-Newtonian fluid with the type of characteristics exhibited by limestone and clay slurr-ries flow, a similar curve can be constructed (Figure 2). This graph is a shear diagram of a Bingham plastic non-Newtonian fluid. It should be noted that with the Bingham(1) plastic type of flow viscosity, the slope of the curve, is still an important materials constant. In addition, however, there is another materials constant, namely the yield stress of the material. One way to visualize this constant is to consider it as the amount of energy that must be put into a Bingham plastic material to start it flowing.

The El Sauzal gold-silver deposit is a high-sulfidation, epithermal precious-metals deposit hosted by an east-dipping sequence of dacitic and rhyolitic pyroclastic and debris-flow units of probable Oligocene age. Total gold production since startup in late 2004 is approximately 450,000 oz. of gold. Above the sulfide boundary gold is mainly disseminated as small grains interstitial to alunite, kaolinite and quartz. The majority of the ore is found in quartz-alunite-kaolinite altered rock that mantles tabular to irregular silicic cores of vuggy, residual quartz ±kaolinite ±dickite. Grade domains are modelled as subhorizontal to east and southeast-dipping. Higher-grade domains cut across alteration zones and also coincide with transitions from vuggy quartz to quartz-alunite-kaolinite. The highest grades are commonly found marginal to vuggy quartz in transitional, hematite-rich quartz-kaolinite and quartz-alunite-kaolinite rock.

THE Yallourn chimney has aroused interest, as it is, for the time being, the tallest structural erection in Australia. Its height was not decided on, however, with the object of breaking records, but is purely incidental to the purpose which it serves. Theboiler plant at the briquetting works (first instalment) consists of five Babcock and Wilcox land-type water-tube boilers, each of 4510 sq ft. heating su:r£ace and 225 sq. ft. grate area in the form of step grates. Four boilers will normally produce 73,000 lb. of steam per hour at a gauge pressure of 265 lb. and a temperature of 6500 F., the fifth boiler being a reserve. Each boiler will consume about 100 tons of Yallourn coal per 24 hours. Provision is made for future installation of economizers, should it be found desirable. Designing for this condition, and allowing for a waste gas temperature of 3500 F. and an air temperature exceeding 1000 it was found necessary to have a draft of about 1.3 in. (water gauge) at the base of the chimney, and to deal with about 2000 cub. ft. of gases per second. Estimates were made of the cost of providing the necessary draught by means of fans and by means of a tall chill).ney. The annual charges of the two methods differed only slightly, and the tall chimney wasselected as being the more general practice in briquetting factories.Estimates were prepared for brick and concrete chiIlllleys. Yallourn bricks at that time were hand-made, and, while very suitable for domestic work, were not capable of withstanding high compressive stresses. The chimney design to suit these bricks thus required to be on very ample lines, resulting in high cost. Machine-made bricks from Melbourne would cost about £5 10s. per thousand on the site, with extra for radials, so that high cost again resulted. On the score...

Contract No. H0110929 was awarded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in February, 1971, to DeTer Company, Incorporated, of Mountain Lakes, N. J. The contract provided for the modification of the contractor's Model 5000 Pressure Foam Generator to fit it for the suppression of coal dust in mines, a detailed testing program in a working coal mine, and for additional modifications and testing for the suppression of fires in coal mines. The contractual program was completed in April, 1972. The results of the dust suppression tests showed conclusively that the modified DeTer equipment effectively reduced the level of respirable dust in a working coal mine well below the present and future acceptable levels set by the Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. The fire tests, carried out in a simulated mine entryway erected on the surface, demonstrated the ability of the DeTer equipment in suppressing fires of varying degrees of severity within an acceptably short time.

Since the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area, the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) has accelerated seismic upgrading of their bridges. Many structures can be improved with the simple addition of hinge seat restrainers. Others require modification of column bents and superstructure to column connections. Often, footing retrofits are necessary, which require the addition of tension/compression elements (compression piling and tiedowns anchors) to resist overturning moments substantially larger than those originally used for footing design. These footing retrofits may include doweled reinforced concrete footing extensions or new pile caps which transmit forces to either driven steel or drilled concrete piles. In some cases, installation of these traditional piling elements is expensive, impractical or impossible due to: low overhead clearance, ground obstructions, high water table, noise or vibration sensitivity, or the inability to laterally expand the existing plan dimensions of the footing. In the latter case, one practical option is to attach small diameter drilled and grouted tension/compression piling elements (Pin Piles) to the existing footing. The footing may be strengthened with dowels and added concrete thickness or there may be a reduced shear span due to the installation of larger or jacketed columns. A reduction of elements is available with a Pin Pile alternative, particularly when the selection of traditional standard piles is governed by the reduced tension/uplift capacity available from the traditional elements, since Pin Piles exhibit superior uplift performance.

Until a few years ago tunnel construction was based exclusively on experience. In recent years, however, numerical models have increasingly become an integrated part of tunnel design [2]. These models permit good evaluation of the tunnel's support behavior even before it is designed. In particular, numerical methods are highly suited for the development of new construction methods. The prerequisite for this is the application of high-performance pre- and postprocessors, permitting the design engineer to come to a quick interpretation of the analysis results. In future, 3D analysis will take on increasing significance, for which reason this paper also deals with this type of models.

El presente trabajo describe los aspectos metalogenéticos de los pórfidos de oro, cobre, molibdeno y sus relaciones con la exploración minera en la región Cajamarca. En ese sentido, son los estudios de geoquímica isotópica (información geocronológica, geoquímica y estructural en los pórfidos de Minas Conga -(Au-Cu), El Galeno (Cu-Mo-Au) y Michiquillay (Cu-Mo), los que señalan que estos depósitos se encuentran relacionados entre sí, tanto en el espacio como en el tiempo. Asimismo, la geoquímica isotópica de plomo y la geoquímica de rocas indican que estos depósitos tienen una fuente de mineral común y la poca contaminación cortical señala la existencia de un sistema de fallas regionales (Punre Canchis – SFPC) que puede haber sido el canal para el emplazamiento de los sistemas porfiríticos ( Minas Conga, El Galeno y Michiquillay).

ONE DAY IN the mid-1880s, in a suburb 0f Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there dismounted from a train the two foremost leaders of the day in the coal and steel industries-Andrew Carnegie and H. C. Frick. Their attention was drawn to a well-loaded car of coke, which their experienced eyes recognized as a superior product. "I'll bet you that coke is from the H. C. Frick Coke Company," Mr. Frick challenged. "I'll bet it was shipped by my company." In a spirit of fun Mr. Carnegie accepted the wager. Mr. Frick lost the bet: the coke had come from M0rewood, one of three sites being operated under the direction of a young entrepreneur, Erskine Ramsay. If Mr. Frick's confidence was somewhat dented by this occurrence, the responsibility was his own. He himself had opened the way for Erskine Ramsay to become the youngest of mine superintendents; and he had dispersed all dissension regarding his choice with the words : "I'm not interested in his years, I'm interested in his record. He makes more coke in an oven than any other superintendent. And I'll take 'em out 0f the cradle if they can make coke... Suppose he is only twenty years old? ... The d --- kid is a genius, I tell you." Erskine Ramsay was to follow in the tradition of Carnegie and Frick. Not only was he ambitious and a worker his background had prepared him for it. Coal mining was in the Ramsay blood. His father, Robert Ramsay, of whom the son once stated that he had no superior as coal mining and mechanical engineer in this country, once accounted in these words for the phenomenal accomplishments which had attached to the name "It does no harm to belong to a family of mining engineers who are just as good as any in America-if it is myself that says it." Anyone acquainted with Robert Ramsay's character realized that he was not given to overstatement. And the above-mentioned Mr. Carnegie encountered young Ramsay again, a few years later in his career, and wrote of him to young Erskine's father, that he was "going to be a credit `tae us a' " (a quotation from Robert Burns.) Nor have Mr. Ramsay's achievements been identified exclusively with the industrial field in which he early asserted himself. He has been an inventor whose techniques in mining engineering have received international recognition. As an investor of foresight, he has benefitted others immeasurably, as well as himself, being an influential factor in the upbuilding of several communities in his chosen and well-loved adopted home state of Alabama since 1887. He is a philanthropist whose benefactions have run into millions, the chief beneficiaries being educational and charitable institutions. Episyenites are sub-solidus, quartz-depleted alkali-feldspar-rich rocks. They form veins and lenticular bodies in granitoid rocks and migmatites in a late- to post-orogenic or anorogenic setting. Leaching of quartz is usually a response to a flux of weakly saline hydrothermal solution in circulation cells above cooling intrusions, where sufficient fluid-rock ratios and thermal gradients are achieved. Fluid Si-undersaturation is achieved by rapid cooling within the field of retrograde Si solubility or by temperature and pressure increase outside retrograde conditions. Some quartz may also be consumed in metasomatic reactions and in response to pressure fluctuation in sealed episyenite bodies. The small size and overall rarity of episyenites imply that conditions for episyenite formation are not commonly encountered in the crust. In addition to quartz depletion, episyenites record complex histories of metasomatic alteration and hydrothermal mineral growth. Nearly all episyenites have undergone Na-metasomatism, which may have led to the formation of nearly monomineralic albitite, and which is occasionally followed by late K-metasomatism, phyllic alteration, and argillization. Depending on the effectiveness of later compaction, recrystallization and vug-filling episyenites may preserve the macroscopic porosity formed by quartz dissolution and brittle deformation. Vuggy episyenites can act as significant sinks for metals carried by crustal fluids and host many significant U, Sn, and Au deposits worldwide. Rare earth-critical syenitic fenites around alkaline intrusions share mineralogical and genetic traits with episyenites.

Misiman society is matrilineal and despite relatively long contact with Europeans and mining, it retains its traditional consensus style of decision making. Many Misimans at least understand English, and this has encouraged comfortable communication between the people and the company (Misima Mines Pty Limited). Company care in monitoring the environment (mostly using Misiman staff), its policy of maintaining a largely Misiman workforce, and its emphasis on training and safety, have all created an environment compatible with Misiman society. In addition, the company has constructed and/or upgraded community facilities such as the airstrip, roads, the health centre, police station and schools, and has actively promoted local business endeavours. All these initiatives have been accomplished by constant dialogue with the largely Misiman workforce, and with the Misiman people, both before and during implementation. Constant, careful communication, using traditional Misiman consensus methods, appears to be the key to continued community acceptance of the project.
