To help insure the continued viability of the minerals and materials sector of the U.S. economy, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research and disseminating technology that will result in more efficient minerals extraction. As part of this effort, a process is being investigated that involves an aqueous chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure to treat complex sulfide concentrates to produce ZnCl2. Subsequent fused-salt electrolysis of the ZnCI2 produces high-purity zinc metal. Previous reports described preliminary, small-scale research on the chlorine-oxygen leaching system and fused-salt electrolysis of ZnCl2. This report discusses the details of design, construction, and longterm, continuous operation of both monopolar and bipolar fused-salt cells. The effects of temperature, electrode gap, current density, electrolyte composition, and electrode configuration on current efficiency and energy consumption were determined for a ZnCl2-KC1-NaCl electrolyte system. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of about 50 lb/day in a monopolar cell which was operated continuously for 60 days with current efficiencies from 85.8 to 98.6 pct and an average power consumption of 2.1 kwhr/lb. Bipolar cells with several different electrode configurations were operated for 90 days. A current efficiency of about 70 pct and power consumption of about 1.7 kwhr/lb of zinc were achieved using a three-electrode-pair, bipolar assembly with a chlorine gas lift pump to circulate electrolyte.

Two basic cases involved in the design of an opening in bedded rock are: 1) where the beds deflect from each other so as to be separated; and 2) where the beds deflect onto their lower neighbor, loading the latter while reducing their own load. Analysis of case 1 is relatively simple, while the interference of the original deflection curves in case 2 complicates analysis of the latter. Figures and formulae are presented for determination of interference loading in this situation. The design of an opening in bedded rock involves two basic alternatives.1'2 In one case the beds deflect away from each other, so as to be separated from their neighbors; in the other case the beds deflect onto their lower neighbor, loading it, while reducing their own load. This is shown in Fig. 1. The first case lends itself to a simple analysis, since the upper and lower boundaries of each beam remain a free surface. In the latter case, however, due to the interference of original deflection curves, the analysis is more complex. Earlier investigators of this interference problem solved it by making the tacit assumption that this type of loading was uniformly distributed along the beam's length. While there is no intuitive justification for this assumption, its use does lead to an approximate solution. Still, a more exact solution does not require this apparently unrealistic restriction. To achieve initial simplicity, the analysis will at first be limited to a two-bedded sequence, as in Fig. 2. Since both beams have identical end conditions and spans, the original deflections of their center lines are members of the same family of curves, as shown in Fig. 3. Therefore, if interference occurs at one point along their center lines, it will occur at every point. For convenience, the midspan point is that usually examined. Should it occur, the additional loads along the lower boundary of the upper bed and the upper boundary of the lower bed must be determined. From the principle of action and reaction, these added loads are known to be equal and opposite, as indicated in Fig. 4. Many mining companies apply ergonomic principles, but it is done either informally and/or reactively. Examples of an informal approach include replacing worn equipment, such as seats, with models that have ergonomic features, or modifying tasks to eliminate safety hazards that will also reduce risk factor exposures that may result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A reactive approach is followed when modifying a task/equipment after an MSD occurs. Neither one of these approaches involves a systematic method of proactively applying ergonomic principles to actually prevent injuries or illnesses. This paper will discuss how Vulcan Materials Company applied ergonomic principles and the interventions implemented to reduce risk factor exposures.

Fines and unnecessarily small rock fragments are created by as many as four identifiable breakage mechanisms which operate close to the charged section or sections of the blasthole. The peak blasthole pressure (Pb) should not exceed that value at which the rock starts to fail in compression. Excessive Pb values can be prevented by carefully selecting:1. the composition, density and/or diameter of the charge, and2. the initiation/priming system.The percentage of fines increases with:1. increases in the charge diameter:blasthole diameter ratio, burden distance, blasthole diameter, effective sub-drilling and size of blast, and2. decreases in blasthole spacing, stemming height and the length:width ratio of the blast block.Decked charges tend to reduce the percentage of fines.Excessive fragmentation is more evident in buffer blasting and sinking cut shots than in blasts fired to a clean free face. Initiation sequences which give effective burdens considerably less than drilled burdens encourage the minimization of fines, as does an inter-row delay time which promotes good progressive relief of burden.The wastage of explosive energy in creating fines is most pronounced where fully-coupled, energetic charges are fired in weak and/or highly porous rocks. This is especially so where forward movement of the strata is impeded by buffer rock, excessive burden distances and/or inadequate inter-row delay times.

These investigations were conducted to determine conditions for recovery of nickel and copper from Funter Bay, Alaska, sulfide ore and recovery of nickel from nickel-silicate ore, Nickel Mountain, Riddle, Oreg. Samples of Funter Bay cupriferous and nickeliferous pyrrhotite ore, were treated by beneficiation, roasting, electric smelting of roasted are for matte production, chlorination, leaching, and sulfatizing roasting with subsequent leaching. Funter Bay and Nickel Mountain ores were smelted together to produce matte. Total sulfide flotation, followed by magnetic separation of the tailings to recover entrained nickel-bearing pyrrhotite, resulted in the highest nickel recovery in beneficiation tests on Funter Bay are. Overall beneficiation resulted in recovery of 98.5 percent of the copper and 95.4 percent of the nickel in the concentrate that contained 3.5 percent copper and 1.7 percent nickel.

Conventional barrier pillars in underground coal mines are intended to protect mains and sub-main entries for relatively long periods of time. Inter-panel barrier pillars that may be used in especially deep coal mines, say, below 800 m (2,400 ft), are intended to protect longwall panel faces and adjacent panel entries for the life of nearby panels. Barrier pillar failures have serious consequences, especially when failure is sudden and catastrophic. Design of barrier pillars is thus of considerable importance to safety and efficiency of operations. Locally, failure occurs at the limit to elasticity when stress tends to exceed strength. Strength of rock is stress dependent, so an analysis of stress is central to rational design of barrier pillars. There are several approaches to stress analysis for coal mine pillar design that range from the simplified but popular tributary area method including variations that use empirical definitions of the tributary area (volume) to more sophisticated numerical methods such as the boundary element method and the finite element method. Despite ease of use, empirical methods are limited and always suspect when applied to conditions beyond their scope of definition, while boundary element methods do not generally include pillars in the solution domain. The finite element method is not so restricted and thus is a natural choice for conventional and inter-panel barrier pillar safety analyses. Caving of roof strata certainly affects the distribution of stress about longwall faces and nearby barrier pillars. Conventional wisdom that considers roof strata to respond as cantilever beams indicates the longer the span the greater are loads on longwall faces and face supports. Failure of roof beams, caving, shortens spans and relieves face and support loads. The same view is applicable to barrier pillars in that long roof spans outside of barrier pillars leads to higher pillar loads than short spans. Hence, caving should be beneficial to barrier pillar safety. However, the benefit may be small depending on the extent of caving and only in the form of a slight reduction in overburden weight transmitted to the barrier pillar, especially in case of inter-panel barrier pillars. FINITE ELEMENT MODEL Finite element models for stress analysis in rock mechanics are formulated in consideration of physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. These models meet the essential requirements for equilibrium of stress, satisfy strain displacements relations, and in a general sense, relate stress to strain through material laws, often referred to as constitutive relations. The last may be complex and replete with nonlinearities. A de facto engineering material law is the elastic model in the form of Hooke?s law for linear, homogeneous materials that may be anisotropic. A limit to elasticity is imposed by strength in the form of a failure criterion or yield function that accommodates triaxial stress states. Examples used in rock mechanics are the well-known Mohr-Coulomb (MC)criterion, the popular Hoek-Brown (HB) criterion, and the Drucker-Prager (DP) criterion. The first is linear in stress, while the second is nonlinear. Both do not include any effect of the intermediate principal stress. The last is also linear in stress but includes the intermediate principal stress. All show an increase in the major principal stress at failure with confining pressure. In the UT2/3 finite element programs, the failure criterion Y is a nonlinear, anisotropic form and is also the plastic potential [1]: [YJI=+ 11NYJI=+- (1) ] where N is an exponent, usually 2, and J2 and I1 are nonlinear anisotropic forms of the second invariant of deviatoric stress and the first invariant of principal stress. The form (1) reduces to DP when N=1and isotropy prevails. When Y = 1, the limit to elasticity is reached and plastic deformation is possible. The material constants that enter (1) are all computed from unconfined compressive, tensile, and, in case of anisotropy, shear strengths. These latter strengths may be estimated from conventional laboratory test data. Of course, joints in field-scale rock masses induce different values. How different is often a matter of conjecture. For comparative studies, laboratory rock properties seem adequate. Inelastic, that is, plastic behavior occurs with strain beyond the elastic limit. Strain hardening, ideal plasticity, and strain softening are possibilities. Ideally brittle behavior with complete loss of strength is an extreme form of strain softening [2]. Caving may also be considered as strain softening with a less drastic reduction of material properties. As intact roof strata fail, fall, and form a rubble pile below, a new material is formed with greatly reduced elastic moduli and strengths, say, 1/100th of the original intact moduli and strengths. From another viewpoint, caving is simply a natural cut and fill process. Input for stress analysis by the finite element method includes: 1. Preexcavation stress state 2. Geology (stratigraphic column) 3. Structure (major faults, joint sets) 4. Elastic moduli 5. Strengths, and specific gravities of each rock type 6. Excavation sequence Output from an analysis includes distributions of: 1. Stress 2. Strain 3. Displacement 4. Local factor of safety (element fs) The last is defined as the ratio of strength to stress and in view of the failure criterion (1), is the ratio [fsJstrengthJstress=] where the numerator is the maximum possible value and the denominator is the actual value of the square root of the second invariant of deviatoric stress. This invariant is a measure of shear stress intensity but also reduces to uniaxial tensile and compressive strengths as the case may be. Explosions in U.S. coal mines have caused death and injury to miners and destruction of workings since the first reported explosion in 1810. These explosions are caused when buildups of explosive gas and/or dust in the mine are ignited by the presence of a flame or spark. Methane gas is inherently generated and held by adsorption in coal and is normally liberated during mining. Because this gas is explosive in the range of 5%–15% by volume, fresh air is constantly supplied to the working face to prevent the methane/air mixture from reaching this explosive range. The required amount of ventilation air is based on estimates of gas release under normal conditions. Occasionally, unanticipated and unusually high emissions are encountered, which, despite normal ventilation controls, result in an explosive mixture that a spark from a cutting bit or electrical equipment can easily ignite. Investigations have shown that such emissions are often associated with anomalous geologic features or conditions. Although most operators are aware that certain geologic features may adversely affect productivity, few are aware of their potential as a gas emission hazard. This report presents a historical framework detailing the impact of geologic features on excess gas emissions and resultant mine explosions. It also provides operators with specific information on recognizing and alleviating potential hazards from methane emissions related to these geologic features.2

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries and is often used to improve organisational safety. This study was undertaken to examine the content of past incident investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of five elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of three Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed.

Benchmarking is a business management process that seeks improvement through the study and reapplication of practices conducted by industry leaders. This discussion presents objectives and organization of benchmarking applied to mining geomechanics. Similar procedures have been successfully applied to mining companies, laboratories, and research organizations involved in mining geomechanics throughout the world. Benchmarking is a structured process that allows an organization to learn from the "best" in the field. The objectives of benchmarking vary depending on the company's targeted areas for improvements. Typical goals include ground control cost reduction, enhanced safety, optimization of geotechnical staffing, development of state-of-the-art design procedures, or the adoption of the "best in the field" geotechnical data management. Once the objective of the study is established and the practices and procedures to be benchmarked are identified, a benchmarking team is formed from internal and outside specialists. Benchmarking in geomechanics is fundamentally different than in most other fields because of the effects of local geologic conditions and regulations, both of which must be understood by all on the benchmarking team, before a comparative analysis can be made.

Since then, the division has become established in various industries such as ferro-alloys and non-ferrous metals, and in numerous other special applications. During the evolution of this technology, more efficient units with longer lifetimes were developed. Today, especially the potential of DC-based smelters, raises worldwide attention, with some projects having already started to implement this kind of technology. This paper evaluates SMS Siemag?s general viewpoint regarding the potential application of DC smelter technology and possible options for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. SMS Siemag is currently executing a FeCr project in Kazakhstan, where four of the world?s largest closed-type DC smelting furnaces, with a power input of 72 MW, will be installed. These furnaces include the latest technological features of modern DC smelters, which are described in this paper. SMS Siemag has started a long-term research and development project allowing a direct comparison of AC versus DC technology on a large scale, using a recently installed 1 MVA test furnace at the IME at the University of Aachen, in Germany. For open-type ferro-alloy and Si-metal furnaces, SMS Siemag has developed an energy recovery system, which is presented in this paper.

"Production at the remote Kumtor Gold Mine in Kyrgyzstan commenced on schedule in December 1996.The ore mined during the first few months of 1997 from the upper benches of the pit did not produce the results predicted by the feasibility study. Low metallurgical recoveries experienced at the time were cause for great concern.It soon became clear the recovery difficulties centred around the preg robbing nature of the ore.Procedures were developed to selectively stockpile highly carbonaceous low recovery ore types. Testing methods were developed in the mill to quante the preg robbing activity of the ore. Preg robbing masking agents were added to the process to reduce the preg robbing activity of the ore.The importance of coconut carbon activity relative to the preg robbing activity of the ore was realized. Every aspect of the performance of coconut carbon in circuit was evaluated and optimized to improve carbon activity.Mineralogical analyses were completed defining the deportment of gold in ore and process tailingsBy year end the recovery difficulties had been overcome and plant design production had been achieved. Process improvements continue through 1998."

This paper contains an account of some creep tests on electrolytic lead and some of its alloys. The stresses used in determining creep were 500, 350, and 200 lb. per sq.' in. The alloys contained silver, bismuth, tellurium, antimony and zinc respectively. All were castin vacuo, and tested "as rolled." Tests were done also on electrolytic lead which had been cast in air.The electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.The preparation and vacuum casting of this lead have been described in a previous paper in this series. The preparation of the alloys, and the air casting of the electrolytic lead, are described in the next section.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE.Every effort was made to keep the vacuum-cast specimens from contact with the atmosphere throughout their history.The ingots were stored eIther in a vacuum desiccator or immersed in heavy oil. The creep specimens were coated with vaseline except during rolling, etching and photography, which involved exposure to the atmosphere for about 45 minutes all told.It is not claimed that vaseline is a perfect shield against the intrusion of atmospheric gases. Possibly during the months that some tests were in progress the gases diffused through the vaseline and gained a limited access to the lead.Nevertheless, the use of vaseline gave protection that brought the tests nearer the ideal at which the author aimed, *Research Fellow, Dept. of Metallurgy, University of Melbourne.

The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

Surface mining and reclamation of a southeastern Ohio site with sandstone-shale overburden resulted in (as compared to premining levels): 1) runoff volumes and peak rates that increased by a factor of from 2 to 10 during mining and after reclamation, 2) destruction of the "aquifer" perched on the underclay of the mined coal bed and gradual, but, as yet incomplete redevelopment of this aquifer after reclamation, 3) no immediate effect on another, lower perched "aquifer", 4) up to 100 times greater sediment concentrations in runoff. Results were influenced by increasing annual precipitation amounts through the period of record; 1978, 1979, and 1980 (postreclamation years) experienced precipitation amounts approaching or exceeding long-term normalcy for the area. Part of the reason that the site produced more runoff after reclamation than before mining is that the premine condition was one of an open, porous soil under woodland, while the postreclamation condition was one of a compacted, bulldozed soil. Sediment concentration results were influenced by failure of the postreclamation erosion control system and by a series of detention reservoirs above the stream monitoring station.

Timber has been used as pile support for structures for 6,000 years. Some means of preservation of wood go back almost that far. Timber piles support all types of structures ? some are buried below the water table; others raise a home for protection from animals or a chief's home for prestige. Millions of wood piles have been driven for bridge support. Earlier piles were driven by hand then by ingeniously raised weights. Charring, animal fats and oils have been used for preservation. Coal tar creosote and other preservative methods started only in the early 1800's and give effective protection.
