Thermodynamic calculations based on the ideal system NiO - Fe203 - H2(g) - CO(g) - H2O(g) - CO2(g) show that it is not possible to selectively reduce nickel oxide in the presence of hematite because ferronickel is the zero-valent nickel-containing product. The calculations show that temperature, reducing atmosphere composition and oxide to reductant ratio have a marked effect on the nickel content of the ferronickel alloy and the amount of nickel reporting jn the alloy. The general trends based on the calculations correlltte well with experimental observations.

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. Until quite recently-practically up to the present time-all but an insignificant amount of the copper produced in Canada was shipped abroad in the form of ore, matte, blister, etc., there to undergo the further treatment necessary to bring it to the refined state in which it is required by fabricators of copper. Consequently, Canadian manufacturers were forced to import nearly all the copper required in their business; and a considerable portion of the ultimate value to be derived from a Canadian raw material was lost to the country of its origin. In the early days of Canadian copper mining, when both the production and consumption of copper in Canada were much smaller than now, such a condition of affairs was perhaps economically unavoidable, and, in any case, was not a matte~ of sufficient importance to attract general attention. Later on, however, when there had been large and rapid increases both in the production and consumption of copper in Canada, it formed the basis of much adverse criticism, deserved or not, of producers of Canadian copper-criticism that became intensified during the war and subsequent years. Happily, the chief grounds of complaint have now been removed, and there are today copper refineries in Canada, either operating or under construction, that are capable, in the aggregate, of turning out amounts of refined copper greatly in excess of any indicated Canadian consumption.

INTRODUCTION The subway line B of Toulouse (France) has been realized with three different tunnel boring machines (TBM) techniques: Contracts 2 and 5 are excavated with earth-pressure balanced TBM, Contract 4 with a slurry shield TBM, and Contract 3 with a compressed-air TBM. The first three machines are around 7.7 m in diameter, while the last one is 5.3 m. Moreover, a small part of the line (50 m) has been excavated by a conventional method. The tunnels run through the Toulouse molasses, composed of hard sandy clay with pockets and lenses of dense sand. Geotechnical investigations have shown that in these formations, K0 is greater than 1, around 1.8 at a depth of 25 m (Serratrice,2005) and that geotechnical characteristics are homogenous on the whole layout (? =22 kN/m3, Su = 300 kPa, c' = 30 kPa, F' = 32°). The water table is found between 2 and4 m below ground level. As geology, stratigraphy and tunnel cover (between 10 and 20 m) are almost identical, a comparison of movements induced by the excavation by each of the four excavation techniques is possible. This paper presents the soil mass movement measures in the case of the conventional excavation method and in the case of TBM sections. It shows how tunneling parameters may explain the different surface movements observed during excavation. For the sake of simplicity, only the results of Contract 2 (earth pressure balanced TBM)will be presented. The Overthrust Belt in portions of Montana, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming, an area that has contributed generously to the Nation's mineral supply, is one of the few remaining oil and gas frontiers on the North American continent. Determination of the oil and gas potential and development of mineral resources of the area have been affected by a variety of land withdrawals and other restrictions, The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of these withdrawals and restrictions and to discuss the mineral resource potential within the study area. Statistics in this report refer to land status on January 1, 1979. At that time, of the 27.3 million acres of Federal mineral lands within the study area, applications tor Federal oil and gas leases for more than 4,4 million acres (about 16 percent) were pending; the average length of time was 2 years. Federal oil and gas leases covering 8.8 million acres were also on record. Although drilling has occurred on some of these leases, others are subject to restrictions that discourage or prevent development. Some in fact contain stipulations disallowing any development.

Since early 1970?s skirt suction foundations (skirted foundation / bucket foundation) have been used as support for large fixed substructures or anchors for floating structures in offshore hydrocarbon development projects. In recent years skirt suction foundations are recognized as one of the solutions in foundations applicable to bridge substructures installed in waters, because skirt foundations have a wide variety of functions such as control of settlement during service life, less impact to environments during operation at installation site. This paper introduces general features of skirt suction foundations, and then discusses design practice of them for the application to bridge substructures, with reference to experiments in both laboratory and field.

The history of the use of calcium aluminates in mining is discussed including a review of very rapid hardening concretes, anchoring using cement capsules and pumped ground control systems. Specific reference is made to the long term performance of highly abrasion resistant orepass lining in South Africa and the use of rapid hardening materials for a range of applications in Australian coal mine where water infiltration creates difficulties or where rapid repair or return to service is required. The topics covered in detail are, high strength abrasion resistant concretes with a 20 year, 30 million ton ore pass life. Rapid reinstatement of wet and worn roadways using mineral dewatering and rapid roadway rebuild solutions, all in I maintenance shift. The different applications are illustrated using examples from operating mines.

Ground conditions in central Glasgow generally comprise loose granular deposits overlying stiffer soils. CFA piling would normally be preferred for urban sites in these ground conditions, but flighting of the superficial deposits has on occasions resulted in building damage. Over the last five years rotary bored piling with vinyl polymer support fluid has proved to be an economic alternative to bentonite slurry. Two case histories in central Glasgow are described in this paper, one for piles founding in granular soils and one for piles founding into bedrock. A comparison is made between the methods required for disposal of the liquid waste from bentonite and vinyl polymer slurries.

This paper describes a design-build project for the construction of a tanker wharf for 150,000 dwt vessels. The tankers deliver oil from offshore oil fields to a Transshipment terminal on the south coast of Newfoundland. The project described is an expansion to a previously constructed facility, adding an additional berth. The first berth was designed conventionally as concrete structures supported on groups of independent, single piles. The second berth was awarded to Peter Kiewit Sons' Co. Ltd. based on an alternate design which utilized a "jacket" concept whereby prefabricated steel frames are placed on the seabed and serve as permanent templates and also give lateral support to the piles, thereby increasing their load capacity. This led to economies and time savings. Discussed herein is the design process and the field installation, covering the jackets, driven pipe piles, and the rock anchors.

The paper considers the selection of control instrumentation for a modern flotation plant, as well as the best interpretation and most effective use of the process data obtained. Process control computer availability is considered from the outset. A general philosophy of control is proposed which leads toward a system that is its own reliability monitor. The bulk of the problems are in grinding and classification. Alternative control methods are described that use particle size measuring devices. Flotation controls, based to a large extent upon on-stream X-ray analysis, are reviewed in detail. Reagent control methods are also examined. Methods to analyze the data obtained from the various measurement devices are introduced. These methods would enable an estimate of the validity of the data and require some redundant information. Another objective of these methods is the protection of operating equipment from possible control malfunctions. Although the discussion generally considers some degree of computer usage, this paper attempts to describe instrumentation and data analysis methods that enable control with or without the process control computer.

STABILIZATION of the adjustment of normal consumption to normal production of world commodities is quite different from reducing production until visible surpluses are consumed. The first means restoration and maintenance of prosperity, the second means merely a temporary alleviation of a condition with the prime cause remaining uncorrected. Overproduction of foodstuffs in some sections of the world while millions starve in other sections represents not so much overproduction of foodstuffs as mal-distribution of foodstuffs. The flour mills of Washington and Oregon normally ship quantities of flour to China. Now, the wheat that would make this flour goes East instead of West. Is this overproduction, or is there something wrong that calls for study, analysis and correction? Can the plan used by the ostrich of hiding its head in. the sand get us by this present world tragedy, or must the challenge to solve this problem be met, constructively? Can we not make out of this breakdown in the world's economic system an opportunity? And use it as the stimulus for remedying the basic cause of the trouble and not content ourselves with devising temporary expedients that aim at remedying this or that of the obvious conditions, in themselves not causes at all but rather the evidence of causes, or that are the symptoms of the real trouble.

(This paper reviews the reasons for and the principles followed in designing and constructing complete new surface works at the mine of the Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, New South Wales, and describes the layout, plant, buildings and services.)The Zinc Corporation mine produces high grade lead, silver and zinc sulphide ore. Lead and zinc concentrates are sent by rail to Port Pirie, where the lead is smelted and the zinc concentrate is shipped to Tasmania, England and other overseas countries.Some time ago consideration was given to the advisability of sinking an additional shaft. For some years the old main shaft had been working at full capacity and developments underground had indicated that the mine would eventually be capable of an output greater than that which could be handled through the shaft. It was therefore decided to sink a new main shaft and the site chosen was in footwall country 900 feet south of the old main shaft. The reason for the move south was so that the new shaft would be opposite the centre of gravity of the ore-bodies at depth. The size of the new shaft is 27 ft. ,6 in. x 15 ft., and the work was put in hand early in 1936.It was intended to haul the whole mine output through this shaft, which was 1,600 feet from the mill then operating. An extensive conveyor system thus became necessary unless a new mill was built near the shaft. Controlling coal mine roofs subjected to high-horizontal stress conditions has always been difficult and uncertain. Traditional supports such as wooden cribs and posts, concrete donut cribs, and standing supports collapse and fail when the roof and floor move horizontally as mining progresses. The former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) (currently the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)), in cooperation with Western Fuels-Utah, Incorporated, conducted research to provide an alternative for traditional secondary support systems in a 3-entry gate road system subjected to high horizontal movements. The support system used in several other coal mine operations, consisted of internal high-strength galvanized resin-grouted cable supports. The system virtually eliminates the necessity for external crib, timber, or concrete supports. The support system consisted of 2.4 m (8 ft) full-column resin grouted bolts and 4.8 m (16 ft) long cable supports installed in conjunction with wire mesh and "Monster-Mats." Cable loading and roof deformations were monitored to evaluate the behavior of the immediate and main roofs during first and second panel extractions. Additionally, cable trusses were installed on the longwall headgate to protect the coal conveyance system from roof and pillar falls created by the formation of cutters and gutters. The test results indicated that the designed support system successfully maintained the roof during the extraction of two longwall panels and dramatically reduced the cost of secondary support. This paper describes the theory of high-horizontal roof movements, the advantages of vertical cable supports and cable trusses, and presents the roof and cable measurements made to assess the support performance during longwall retreat mining.

Support system design for tunnels and underground excavations has for many years relied heavily on the use of rock mass classification systems and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion as a means for characterizing rock mass behaviour. Because of their development, both the GSI system and the Hoek-Brown criterion admirably characterize most ?normal? rockmasses from the viewpoint of their behaviour for rock excavations. They, however, run into difficulties when applied at the two ends of the rock competence scale. This is largely because block size and incipient strength are such that rockmass behaviour in these domains tends not to be controlled by interblock shear strength but rather by material strength. At the low end of the rock competence scale (UCSi <<15 MPa and GSI generally <30) discontinuities play less of a role and rock mass strength tends to matrix strength. Similarly, at the high end of the scale (GSI >>65, mi>>15), because discontinuities are now widely spaced, block size becomes so significant that again, intact material behaviour rather than the fracturing becomes the dominant factor controlling rock mass strength. In this paper several case examples are presented to illustrate the application of the high-end (spalling) and low-end (weak ground) transition Hoek-Brown relationships proposed by Carter, Diederichs and Carvalho (2007) as a basis for better defining rockmass behaviour at the extreme ends of the rock competence scale.

An improved experimental procedure to measure contact angle has been consolidated with coal surface preparation involving polishing with abrasive paper, alumina powder, and a cloth, followed by ultrasonic and mechanical cleaning. Specifically, the captive-bubble measuring technique has been compared with the sessile-drop technique and the former has been recommended for the examination of the hydrophobic properties of coal surfaces. Results of the research program, which is currently under way, on the examination of the effect of the nature, amount, size, and distribution of mineral inclusions in coal, on its wettability are briefly reviewed.

"The second prime area within the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization exploration area named H22 was delineated in 2013 with the goal to ensure sufficient nodule reserves for profitable mining operations and processing.The knowledge base for area H22 has been obtained from archive materials. The geological situation can be characterized as follows: the sea bottom is represented by tectonic blocks oriented in a sub-meridional direction. According to swath mapping, the depressions (troughs) are contoured at depths of 4500-4600 m while the tops of horsts occur at 4300-4350 m. Volcanic relief occupies 6% of the H22 area; in the eastern part a multicone volcano was detected. Its area at the base is 153 km2. The maximum height of a cone above the base is 850 m. The crystalline basement composed by tholeiitic basalts of late Oligocene age is covered by about 100 m of sediments. Semi-consolidated to consolidated calcareous nanofossil sediments of the Marquesas formation are deposited on the basement. Higher up in the profile sediments of the Clipperton formation occur. They are represented by unconsolidated siliceous (Radiolaria, Diatom) ooze. Sediments containing calcium carbonate have not been detected. Where opaline silica (or CaCO3 if any) content is below 5%, the sediments belong to zeolitic clays or red pelagic clays. Grain size composition of the seabed and the near-seabed sediments in H22 classifies them into clayey silts."

The Autogenous Fine Grinding Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill The marginal improvements which continue to be made to fine grinding practices have exposed the limits of conventional technologies and highlighted the need for a radically new approach. The patented autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill design consists of a rotating spherical grinding chamber, which shares the same spherical centre as the shaft-mounted counter-rotating disc assembly. The axis of the disc assembly can be inclined to the axis of the spherical grinding chamber by pivoting the disc shaft about the common spherical centre. The inter-particle energy transfer required for breakage results from particle velocity differentials created by the discs intercepting the rotating mass. Particle size reduction is concentrated in high shear zones, which envelop the outer surface and periphery of the discs. This paper traces the development of the KAD Mill from pilot to commercial scale. Pilot work covers a range of minerals including magnetite, calcite, dolomite, barite, limestone and talc. Test results include open and closed circuit operation in wet and dry modes. Conventional milling constraints and energy consumption issues are addressed while new dimensions are added to the feed size range acceptable for wet and dry grinding to fine and ultra-fine sizes.
