"Economies of scale and the variable characteristics of many large ore deposits have resulted in grinding installations using very large SAG mills fitted with variable speed drives. Low-aspectratio single-stage SAG mills were introduced in South Africa to process the consistent gold bearing Witwatersrand quartzites. Elsewhere, circuits were patterned after the more conventional North American circuits with high-aspect-ratio SAG mills followed by ball mills. This paper provides information on two recent Gold Fields group installations covering both types of SAG mill in large, single-stage applications. While these operations process similar tonnages, the mills represent opposite ends of the aspect-ratio spectrum. The Tarkwa mine in Ghana employs a low-aspect 27’ x 42’ 14MW SAG mill. The St Ives mine in Australia operates a conventional 36’ x 18’ 13.4MW SAG mill.INTRODUCTIONGold Fields is one of the world’s largest gold producers with annual production of approximately 4.2 million ounces. The Gold Fields group has operations in South Africa, Ghana and Australia, along with numerous exploration sites and advanced projects in several other countries. "Modern signal and power electronics made adjustable-speed AC drives technically feasible and reliable and economically attractive. Cycloconverters are discussed as a proven technology for mine hoists. \IntroductionUntil rather recent technical and commercial advances in power and signal electronics, DC motors were used almost exclusively for applications requiring continuously adjustable operating speeds and torques. More recently, the significantly higher efficiency and the accordingly lower operating costs of AC motors gained importance. An effective and efficient speed control of AC motors requires the control of AC voltage and frequency. Table 1 shows typical applications of adjustable-speed AC drives.CycloconvertersOf particular interest to the mining industry are cycloconverters for hoist drives. The cycloconverter represents by far the simplest, most efficient and most economical means of converting a constant-voltage, constant-frequency supply into an adjustable-voltage, adjustable-frequency supply as required for the speed control of AC drives operating in the frequency range to half of the utility frequency.Cycloconverters feeding synchronous motors or induction motors are ideally suited for slow-speed direct-coupled drives."

In order that the use of continuous mining machines be most economic, the equipment must be operated at rated capacity as much of the time as possible and downtime for repairs kept at a minimum. A large factor influencing any proposals for maintenance programs is the complexity of the machines—often the intricacies of the precision-built equipment requires engineering knowledge byond the scope of mine maintenance personnel. A training program is part of the answer; there are others. In addition to investigating a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program, Mountaineer Coal Co. has launched a detailed preventive maintenance program to combat extensive downtime often encountered when continuous miners are used. Everyone in the coal industry knows the importance of operating continuous miners at their rated capacity as much of the time as possible. The potential capacity of the miner is such that l-min. delay means from 3 to 8 tons of coal lost. Today's miner is a well designed, precision-built machine, complicated with hydraulic and electrical equipment and complex mechanical assemblies with all possible combinations of gears, levers, and rods. As the machine becomes more complex, the problem of maintenance becomes more acute. The transition from conventional to continuous mining has taken place so rapidly that the mine mechanic has been unable to keep pace. When there is a machine failure, the maintenance man usually employs either the trial-and-error or the play -it-by-ear method of repair, but this represents an expensive proposition. Mine mechanics, maintenance superintendents, and mine managers complain about the complexity of the machines and how difficult it is to keep them running. There is no shortage of skill in the design offices. Machines are designed by good engineers, but for engineers. What's the answer? Better trained maintenance men—better maintenance instruction—better field service. These are all good corrective measures, but the real cure is to provide for the men at the do it level. Designers have got to cooperate with men to simplify maintenance on the increasingly complex machine. The designer must be aware of how his machine can be maintained. Sometimes a simple design change in a bearing, oil seal, or a bushing will correct recurrent breakdowns. Parts such as filters, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pivot pins can be better arranged on the machine to make them accessible so that the mine mechanic can easily keep the machine producing. Therefore, to get our maintenance off on the right foot, the program must begin back in the design office, before the machine is delivered to the mine property. Realizing the importance of this aspect, our company set out on a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program. This is a formal program in which quarterly reports are written covering machine defects, design weakness, and general problems relating to machine maintenance and performance. The manufacturer in turn comments on each and every item appearing in these reports, indicating the action he proposes to take. In addition to the written reply, meetings are scheduled with manufacturer representatives to discuss further the outlined problems. The benefits realized from this organized program are both substantial and far reaching. Good maintenance begins with a good design. The subject of preventive maintenance is not a new one. Volumes have already been written on the subject. It consists primarily of doing the maintenance work when you want to rather than when the machine demands it. However, a preventive maintenance program can be overdone. Theoretically, if carried to ridiculous extreme, all working time could be spent inspecting and repairing the machines and no time would be left for production output. Our goal in maintenance is to maximize running time for all machines, and to prevent or at least minimize production downtime. In conjunction with pilot steamflood tests in the Venango sands of Warren and Venango Counties, Pa., the Marx and Langenheim (4)3 calculations were adapted and programed for digital computer solution to predict test performance. The Monte Carlo technique was incorporated in the calculations to provide values of several variables which could not be adequately defined from available information. The computation methods are explained and the FORTRAN IV program listing is presented. Data and results of the prediction calculations for Venango oil sands are also shown.

All development proposals have to run the gauntlet of the approvals process. Major resource projects are generally subject to particularly intense scrutiny. The key element in the approvals process is that it is about making decisions that take into account the benefits or otherwise to society as a whole - the interests of any one group do not take precedence. Most groups tend to see their relatively narrow interests as representing those of the broader society. Each group develops their arguments for or against a project in isolation, and then presents these to an arbiter in an adversarial situation. From this mire of argument and counter-argument it is often difficult to discern just what the real benefits of a project are, and opportunities for agreement and constructive modification of proposals to meet real concerns are often missed. The contention made in this paper is that the inevitable differences between these various viewpoints should be harnessed to help the proponent to come up with a proposal that is clearly of overall benefit to society and which gains approval. It is better to accept that no one group has a monopoly on wisdom in this area and to engender an environment of creative tension in which the pros and cons can be broadly considered and good planning and design used to produce a proposal that has a high chance of success. There are a variety of ways in which this approach can be implemented. Some of these options will be discussed in terms of their likely applicability to energy projects and their potential for success.

"Abstract: The paper describes a large innovative project completed in 2012-20123 by Trevi Group, to develop equipment capable to install ultra-deep diaphragm wall. The project highlights the capacity of SOILMEC to design and build a new hydromill able to reach an unprecedented depth of 250 m, including new devices for monitoring and correct the verticality. The entire project can take advantage of the long and solid experience matured by Trevi and Rodio (now part of Trevi Group), developing in house or, else, select the elements necessary for a high quality product in the ground.The paper describes the results of different systems used to monitor and control the verticality and the twist of panel during excavation, together with the method used to pour concrete. Finally, the results of verification coring and lab tests on concrete samples recovered at various depths are discussed. The test field has been supervised by representatives of three of the major Italian Universities, and lasts almost one year from August 2012 to June 2013.The verification holes made use of an innovative combination of directional drilling and coring, to check the quality of the plastic concrete for the full length of the panel. The data confirmed that the test panel has high quality concrete, meeting or exceeding to the prefixed requirements.With this test, super-deep cut-off walls reaching depths of 250 m have become a reality. This would change the perspectives of dam engineering both for existing dams rehabilitation and for new dams design and construction. With the execution of this test panel, the technology of milled concrete cutoffs has made a ”quantum leap”, pushing the limit of practicable dams."

O trabalho teve por objetivo produzir uma liga Al AA1070 com granulometria fina a partir de um material com granulometria grosseira, por meio de deformação plástica severa (DPS) aplicada por prensagem por canais equiangulares (ECAP) via rota C, bem como esclarecer e avaliar os mecanismos responsáveis pela evolução microestrutural durante este processo de prensagem. O processo empregou a rota C com 5 passes consecutivos a frio e acumulou uma deformação ?5 = 5,95. O material de partida é proveniente de um processo de laminação a quente, com uma microestrutura de grãos grosseiros com tamanho de grão de 16 ± 18 µm. Foi realizada a caracterização microestrutural com o auxílio das técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e de difração de elétrons retroespalhados. O refinamento microestrutural foi realizado eficientemente alcançando uma microestrutura fina, observou-se uma redução de 80% alcançando um tamanho de grão de 3,38 µm, e um aumento da fração de contornos de alto ângulo passando de 23% a 46%. A partir dos resultados obtidos nas análises conclui-se que os mecanismos responsáveis pela evolução microestrutural foram os processos de subdivisão por meio de fragmentação e rotação de grãos, recuperação e recristalização dinâmica.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.

The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. As part of the Bureau of Mines program directed toward more effective utilization of the mineral resources of the United States, a number of processes for production of sponge iron have been investigated. The use of sponge iron as a raw material for production of steels and other ferrous alloys offers several possible advantages over the conventional pig-iron and scrap process, especially for utilization of the smeller, widely distributed iron-ore deposits of the western United States. Although considerable information has been made available on various processes for production of sponge iron, little information 118.6 been published heretofore on the problems and costs involved in melting the sponge iron for production of steel. The present Paper reports the results of tests conducted at the Bureau of Nines pilot plant at Redding, Calif. in which several different types of sponge iron Were used as charge material for production of steel in a 4-ton-capacity basic arc furnace.

El uso de los flowmeters de área variable en la industria petrolera y química han simplificado algunos problemas como la alimentación exacta de productos químicos al flujo del sistema. En este sentido, el texto señala la utilidad de su empleo en la industria de flotación, así como la tardanza de su adaptación al sistema. El método de los flowmeters se adapta fácilmente a la alimentaciones de radioactivos donde el esquema es idóneo para un mineral complejo que contiene varios metales. En el caso que el mineral contiene dos metales básicos, se requiere de una mezcla intrincada de depresores para obtener una flotación selectiva o en bulk y si contiene tres metales básicos, los depresores y modificadores aumentan en número y puntos de alimentación. En 1957, como parte sus experimentaciones, la Cerro de Pasco Corporation utiilizó los flowmeters en la planta piloto de 50 toneladas cortas secas por día. Sin embargo, dicho plan presentó inconvenientes como las fallas en la correcta alimentación, errores en la calibración del alimentador de discos, órdenes a los reactivistas o derrame de radioactivos, ente otros. De otro lado, las ventajas que ofrece dicha operación está en la determinación del control de reactivos, el cual está bajo cargo de un supervisor, así como el costo de instalación se reduce a 50% en comparación con el sistema convencional de discos.

Jointed micropiles were investigated to support bridge foundations where shallow rock was present. In this application, micropiles would have some amount of unsupported length, and would be subject to nominal lateral loads. Five lateral load tests were conducted on micropiles to demonstrate the impact of casing joints and rock socket embedment on lateral behavior. Load tests were simulated with FB-Multipier, a hybrid-finite element program for analysis of deep foundations, for proper design of the loading apparatus and instrumentation. The micropile sections were 2 m (6.56 ft) long, 273 mm (10.75 in) in diameter, 13 mm (0.5 in) thick walled, with a 50-mm (2-in) long threaded joint. Micropiles were made of one to three casing sections and were embedded 0.3, 0.6, 1.5, or 3.0 m (1, 2, 5, or 10 ft) into rock. In each test, two identical micropiles were pulled together using a simple frame until the weaker pile failed. All micropiles were instrumented with inclinometer casings while two contained strain gages at 0.76 m (2.5 ft) intervals. Load and displacement were measured at the pile heads. Tests showed the embedment of 0.6 m, 1.5 m, and 3.0 m (2 ft, 5 ft and 10 ft) sufficiently carried lateral loads over 180 kN (20 tons). The piles embedded 0.3 m (1 ft) were not able to maintain lateral load. In general, all micropiles tested to failure exhibited a brittle failure mode where there is small lateral deflection followed by a sudden failure at the casing joint. This was demonstrated in three of the load tests. In most cases, the micropiles were stiffer and stronger in the load tests than originally predicted numerically. The final test, where piles were not loaded to failure, verified that embedding vibrating wire rebar strain meters in the grout captured the bending moment profile of the micropile. The results showed the maximum moment in this case being carried directly across the threaded joint as predicted by the preliminary models. The results of these tests were used to calibrate the FB-Multipier numerical model. Using a load test that included bending strain measurements for a match, the soil properties were adjusted to produce reasonable matches for all of the load tests.

The 9th International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting was held in the Granada Conference Centre, Granada, Spain from the 14th - 17th September 2009. The Symposium was preceded by a 1 ½ day Workshop on “Vibrations from Blasting” organized by the initiator Dr. Alex Spathis and his colleague M. J. Noy, both employed at Orica Mining, Australia. Prof. Josè Sanchidrian at the “Universidad Politécnic de Madrid” in Madrid, Spain was the main organizer for both the Workshop and the Symposium. A record number of participants came (292) from a record number of countries (41). There were a total of 14 papers in the Vibrations from Blasting Seminar and 96 papers and 2 Keynote Addresses in the Fragblast 9 Symposium itself. The aim with this paper is to present some results from Fragblast 9 which are of interest for a large target group. One very important result from the Fragblast 9 meeting was that it was decided there that Fragblast 10 will be held in November 2012 New Delhi India.

Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. In addition a discussion is given of the mineralogical constitution, size analysis, and degree of liberation of ash constituents of the various samples.COAL SAMPLESRepresentative samples of coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams were obtained for testing.
