The objective of the ? 200 million ($280 million) project Parma Railways Station-Urban Transformation was the reconnection of the North and South parts of the town by constructing an 80 m (250 ft) wide sunken artery passing under the four double railway tracks of the station without any impact on train traffic. The site of the project, adjacent to the Parma River, presented water seepage problems at any excavation depth. The use of conventional large diameter bored pile machinery was not allowed by the Railway Authority because equipment dimension and construction phases do not comply with train traffic safety regulations. Foundations for the bypass were thus constructed by minipiles nested into jet-grouted soil using machinery operating within the existing head room and at a safe distance from the tracks. Jet-grouting treatment reached depths of 25 to 28 m (80 to 90 ft) from tracks? grade and embedded minipile-heads were terminated at 2 to 3 m (6.6 to 10 ft) below grade. Load tests on minipiles were pushed to failure. Failure occurred at a 240 t (265 t) load without breakage of the bond between the jet grouted soil and the minipiles. A 0.93 MPa (135 psi) shear resistance ??? between minipile steel casing and the jet grouted soil was measured prior to the failure of the steel casings. Overall measured foundation settlements were well within expected values and were considered insignificant.

Phelps Dodge Mining’s Bagdad, AZ copper facility uses a large series of cone crushers and ball mills to reduce copper ore to very fine particles. The solids are mixed with water to create a slurry. Milk of lime is added to this slurry to raise the pH. Small amounts of reagents are also added, including a frother to make bubbles, as well as a collector chemical that causes the copper minerals to stick to those bubbles. This material is pumped to a series of froth flotation cells to concentrate the copper. Air is blown into the flotation cell tank and the pulp mixture is vigorously agitated. Rising bubbles carry the copper particles over the edge of the flotation tank. The bubbles break after they flow over the edge.

This report documents the program conducted to demonstrate the application of a flywheel-powered propulsion system to underground mining shuttle cars. Such application can replace the present electrical trailing cable common to most shuttle cars and thereby eliminate those safety hazards, maintenance problems, and haulage route limitations inherent in the trailing cable. Described are the activities undertaken to specify and design a flywheel of optimum size, shape, and material; to identify the best concepts of input and output systems; and to achieve installation of the power package into a shuttle car. The resultant Flywheel-Powered Shuttle Car is an FMC Model 6L shuttle car, 6-ton capacity, 20-ton gross vehicle weight, powered by a flywheel system with 4.5-kilowatt-hour usable energy. The completed vehicle was delivered to the Bureau of Mines in Bruceton, Pennsylvania, for testing and evaluation.

Pipe piles can be either closed- or open-ended piles. Pile load capacity for a closed-ended pile consists of the shaft and base resistances, while, for an open-ended pile, it consists of shaft, soil plug, and annulus resistances. In order to investigate the pile load capacity of both closed- and open-ended piles, two field pile load tests were performed. For the open-ended pile, the fully instrumented double-walled system was used to separately measure all the components of the pile load capacity. The soils at the test site were predominantly granular soils with relative densities varying from loose to dense with increasing depth. The incremental filling ratio (IFR), which affects significantly the load capacity of open-ended piles, was also measured during pile driving. The test results indicated that the total load capacity of the closed-ended pile was higher that that of the open-ended pile, mostly due to the difference in shaft capacity. The shaft and base load capacities of the open-ended pile were 44% and 20% lower than the corresponding values for the closed-ended pile.

This report on the properties of burner-fuel oils produced during 1956 was issued under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. This survey is the second for this type of fuel, the first being made in 1955. 2/ The surveys are conducted to provide information on the characteristics of burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. They are similar in pattern to the diesel-fuel surveys, conducted since 1950, 3/ and are not intended to conflict with but rather to supplement them. The importance of fuel oil has resulted in the need for more information by the petroleum industry, manufacturers of heating appliances, and consumers regarding the types and qualities of the fuels currently being marketed. Samples of burner-fuel oil typical of their manufacture during the early part of 1956 were analyzed by the refiners in accordance with instructions from the subcommittee on fuel surveys of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute, Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied and compiled as shown in the tables of this report.

INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. Successful design, operation and completion of a surface waste management facility for a diamond mine located in Canada?s northern environment requires careful planning to minimize short and long term environmental impacts. As part of the mine development application process, best practice standards were applied using conventional engineering to reduce the environmental effects of the mine waste facility at the Snap Lake Diamond Project. This paper presents the design criteria, site conditions, material characteristics and engineering management objectives considered for optimization of the development plan. Insight into the engineering analyses, development alternatives, monitoring program and reclamation strategy plan to be undertaken during mine operations to provide opportunity for adaptive management and to minimize environmental impacts is provided.

This report contains Bureau of Mines routine analyses of 492 samples of crude petroleum from 470 United States oilfields, each of which produced 2,500 barrels a day or more during at least 1 of the years 1946-56. The fields are listed alphabetically by State and field names in table 1, with information on the geographical and geological sources of the samples. Table 2 summarizes the general characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses. A previous report 4 contains similar analyses of 283 important United States oilfields; some of them are repeated in this report. Many fields for which analyses previously were published are represented by new analyses, which include data not previously reported. Refractive index nu and specific dispersion, ng minus nD divided by the density, for some of the distillate fractions are included in the analyses of 316 of the crude-oil samples. This is the first Bureau of Mines report on analysis of crude oils to contain such data, and their use in calculating hydrocarbon-type composition of the fractions is explained.

The use of explosives to fragment rock generates ground vibrations which may have a detrimental effect on contiguous underground coal mine openings. Increased surface blasting by a burgeoning number of surface coal mines and quarries has caused considerable concern among underground mine operators. Ground vibration effects generated from surface mine blasting are also causing public concern. In response to this concern, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Stagg and Engler, 1980) has measured and analyzed ground vibrations and their effects on underground and surface structures. Some of the complaints registered against the mining industry are claims of substantial material damage from vibrations generated by the blasting; others are nuisance complaints of minor damage or annoyance. In general, allegations of damage from surface blasting have been sufficiently numerous to constitute a major problem for mine operators engaged in blasting operations. They have recognized the need for more technological data to evaluate the vibration problems associated with blasting. Both the operators and the general public need adequate safeguards based upon factual data to protect their specific interests. The coal mine industry needs reliable information from which to change blasting operations to reduce the number and severity of major damage claims and eliminate the growing number of nuisance complaints. The problem is of major concern not only to coal mine operators and nearby property owners, but also to federal, state and local governments. At the same time, environmental control agencies responsible for blasting and explosives use require reasonable and appropriate guidelines to protect the miners' lives.

Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. However, disposing of this material represents an appreciable waste of base metals as well as a serious toxicity hazard.Sulphide Corporation Pty. This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.

Test work comparing the performance of a Low Density Porous Ammonium Nitrate Prill to regular Porous Ammonium Nitrate conducted in Pennsylvania and New York showed that less ammonium nitrate was required to perform the same work and that improved sensitization of an emulsion/ammonium nitrate blend reduced “orange fumes”. Fragmentation was similar in all tests with improved heave and throw experienced.

More than 124,000 people involved in the mining and construction industries throughout the world poured into Las Vegas, NV in March for ConExpo-Con/Agg ’99. Show organizers said this triennial exhibition is the largest equipment show in the Western Hemisphere and one of the largest exhibition of any industry. “Clearly, Con-Expo-Con/Agg ’99 was one of the largest trade shows of any industry ever held in the Western Hemisphere,” said Bruno Benna, co-chair of the event. Attendees included mining industry representatives, including aggregates, and sand and gravel producers. In addition, many of the attendees work in the construction, reclamation, forestry, asphalt paving, landscaping and concrete industries. According to show records, about 52% of those attending were company presidents, vice presidents, chief financial officers or managers.

During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve. The objective of this study is to make a critical evaluation of the magnitude and extent of electrostatic hazards in typical U.S. mining operations and to assess the adequacy of techniques, materials, and equipment for detecting and minimizing these hazards. This was accomplished with an incident/accident survey, mine visits, literature search, and engineering analysis. It was concluded that it would be desirable to (1) utilize ground fault interrupters to minimize stray current from electrical utilities, (2) decrease the current and electrostatic sensitivity of electric detonators used in areas with a high incidence of lightning strikes or troublesome stray currents, (3) institute quality control and test standards for blasting material and protective devices, (4) establish an electrostatic monitoring program for loading ANFO in plastic lined holes, and (5) establish a risk criteria for operator exposure in mines.
