The coal mining industry is an important sector of Canada?s economy. The cost of mining and haulage of coal in Western Canada is a major focal point when compared to inexpensive coal from Australia. Spot coal price volatility affect contractual price arrangements and this creates pressure on companies? profit margins and their competitive edge. In order to alleviate this pressure, companies may have to take short-term drastic measures that may hurt their strategic positions in the long-term. Companies must also create a mix of their products to ensure effective maintenance of profit margins given various quantity and quality constraints. In this paper the authors provide extensive analysis based on detailed probabilistic production systems for coal extraction and haulage in Western Canada. An optimization model is formulated for typical coal mining operations, processing and haulage from mine sites to the Vancouver Ports using linear programming algorithm. A stochastic model is also formulated to analyze the associated risks and uncertainties. These models are validated using data from five operating mines in Western Canada with varying quantity and quality products and uncertainties. The results show that the five mines studied have to produce between 180,000 and 2.10 million tonnes of metallurgical coal and between 70,000 and 2.16 million tonnes of thermal coal to enhance their profitability given the underlying constraints. The average expected probability of success associated with production capacities from these mines is about 66%. This results in a failure probability of 36%, which is extremely high under contractual arrangements. The results also show that management?s profit expectation of $83 million can be achieved at a zero percent failure probability. With a higher risk of failure of 10%, this expectation increases by 21% to $100.3 million.

Gold Fields Mining Corporation started processing ore from it's Chimney Creek operation in northern Nevada in November, 1987. Since that time production has averaged about 200,000 ounces per year from the milling and dump leaching circuits combined. The events that led up to commissioning of the plant started in January of 1985 when the Gold Fields exploration team drilled their first hole in an area now known as Discovery Hill. The major orebody was located later in the year in what is currently the major focus of activity, the North Pit. Subsequent drilling since plant startup has found another 14 million tons of ore two miles south of the original orebody. This South Pit orebody is currently being stripped and metallurgical testing is underway. Engineering Engineering on the Chimney Creek plant started in earnest in May, 1986. Davy McKee Corporation from San Ramon, California, did both the engineering and the construction management. Before engineering began the entire senior staff of the Plant Department was hired and assigned to the project. Senior staff included the Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist. Gold Fields does not employ an internal central engineering staff to design their plants. We feel that the people who design the plant should be the ones who will be required to run it once it has been commissioned. This philosophy affords a continuous accountability from start of design through commissioning and operations. All four of the senior staff spent the most critical phase of the engineering stage at Davy McKee, so the plant is truly a reflection of all four disciplines. In bringing on the Maintenance General Foreman from the start, there was a focus placed on ease of maintaining the plant. Another philosophy that was adopted from the start was that the plant be easy to work in and maintain for both operators and maintenance personnel. Numerous design criteria were given to Davy McKee to ensure this. For example, we required that every piece of equipment could be reached easily with a crane or fork lift. All conveyors were required to have walkways on both sides for ease of maintenance and a minimum of 30 inches of clearance under them for ease of cleanup. Visibility for operators was considered very important and the control rooms and general plant layout were designed with this in mind. A list of about 100 general rules were given to Davy McKee during the early layout meetings and these were held as the general design criteria throughout engineering and construction. While engineering was progressing in San Ramon, California, dump leach test work was being done at the site. Three 6 foot diameter fiberglass columns were constructed and filled to a 20 foot height with low grade ore. Leaching characteristics were determined and the dump leach design was based on information collected from these columns. Construction The major contractors on the project were The Industrial Company for the bulk of the piping and structural, EMKO on the electrical/ instrumentation and Hunewill for most of the earth work and leach pad construction. All plant operating and maintenance personnel were employed eight weeks before startup for intensive training. Instructors were Gold Fields personnel, including foremen, and Davy McKee engineers. On occasion, selected suppliers representatives were brought in to discuss major pieces of equipment. Project completion was targeted for January, 1988 at a projected cost of 78.9 million dollars. Actual startup was about 1 1/2 months ahead of schedule and slightly under budget. Full design capacity was achieved the first full month of operation. Crushing Run of mine ore is delivered to the crusher and dumped into a 90 ton hopper which is topped with a 30" X 30" opening stationary grizzly. Kelsey Lake kimberlites are a cluster of eight diamondiferous pipes that occur in the northern State Line kimber lite district of the Colorado-Wyo¬ming diamond province (Coopersmith 1991, 1993) (Fig. 1). This is located at the southern margin of the Wyoming Archean province. Two relatively large pipes and a few smaller bodies define the cluster (Fig. 2). The Kelsey Lake kimberlite cluster has been developed as the first diamond mine in the United States. The cluster was discovered in 1987. Full-scale production began in the spring of 1996. Mining has produced gem-quality diamonds up to 28.3 carats in size. The 30 State Line kimberlites, intruded about 390 million years ago into Proterozoic crystalline rocks, were presumed to be underlain by Archean basement of the Wyoming Province. Nearly all the kimberlite pipes contain diamond but only the Kelsey Lake pipes are economic. The Kelsey Lake kimberlites contain predominately diatreme facies kimberlite, with minor hypabyssal and crater facies rocks locally occurring. Alteration and weathering of the kimberlites is extensive. Petrologic studies indicated an underlying lithosphere that has a largely Proterozoic signature and shows evidence of deep melt and metasomatic events. Current development has concentrated on the two largest pipes. These have been bulk-sampled after geological study (1987) identified the presence of small diamonds and mineral chemistry indicating favorable diamond conditions. A 10-t/hr (11-stph) rotary pan plant was established in 1992 to process thousands of tons of bulk-sample material. Grades and gem-quality diamonds to 14.2 carats in size were recovered. Early in 1995, it was decided to move from evaluation to commercial mining. Production began in early 1996. A 195-t/hr (215-stph) rotary pan plant was built. A water supply system and tailings disposal have also been incorporated. The project straddles the Colorado/Wyoming border. Existing mining permits were amended to incorporate the increased scale and new plant facility. The permits for this project included the following: Colorado mining permit, Wyoming dozing permit, Corps of Engineers Section 404, Colorado NPDES, Wyoming NPDES, Storm water Management Plan, Air Pollution Emission Notice, various Colorado and Wyoming State Engineer and well permits, Substitute Water Sup¬ply Plan, Larimer County Special Use Review, and US Forest Service road use permits. The temporary destruction of a wetlands area was a sensitive issue. It has been addressed through the Clean Water Act Section 404 permit administered by the US Corps of Engineers. This use will be mitigated by creating new, self-sustaining wetlands in the immediate drainage system. A comprehensive and bonded reclamation plan is incorporated in the permits. Diamond mining and ore processing is environmentally benign. No chemicals are used in processing the diamonds. The plant is a water wash facility. The kimberlite ore is inert, as is the granite wall rock. The exposure of the ore body and the subsequent ore processing and waste rock and tailings containments pose no threat of release, leaching or dispersion of any detrimental elements. There is no acid-forming waste. Even a prolonged acid rain environment will not produce a harmful leachate. Slimes containment and clarification ponds will prevent unacceptable levels of suspended solids in water discharge. The market prices received by producers of internationally traded commodity metals have been, and continue to be remarkably volatile and unpredictable compared with most other traded goods and services. This volatility results in an erratic financial performance on the part of producing companies, disruptive and often inflationary cost changes for consumers, unreliable tax revenues and export earnings for host governments and severe social and economic pressures on local, sometimes remote, communities which are dependent on the activity in question. Generally speaking, price volatility appears to be associated with the inability of the metal producing side of the industry to regulate the volume of supply in a manner that is consistent with metal demand, which in turn reflects broad macroeconomic and industrial developments around the world. This statement does not purport to apply to all metals or to all instances of volatility of course. Price movements may occur as a result of pure speculation or even illegal manipulation of the commodity markets. Embargoes, boycotts and other politically induced supply changes may contribute. Threatened or actual strikes also cause artificial swings in sales volumes and prices. How- ever, most of these developments are of a short-term nature. Yet metals price cycles may last for several years, as demonstrated by the extended copper price trough from 1981 to 1986. This paper deals with price volatility which reflects long-term economic cycles and the adaptive processes that exist within the industry in response to such cycles. Special emphasis is placed on the role of forecasts and forecasters in these processes. It should be said at the outset that this reflects the personal experience of one forecaster working in private sector commercial consulting practices that are independent of producers, consumers and host governments. However, the experience does cover the entire period since 1973 and has involved working with a substantial majority of the major companies that supply high volume commodity metals. By way of background it should be stated that the post-1973 world economy has provided a challenging environment for forecasters. One cannot be precise about the forecasting record of either industry insiders or outside consultants, financial analysts and academic forecasters because comprehensive records have not been kept, or if they have the results are too embarrassing to be published. Institutions such as the World Bank have published forecasts of the prices of major commodities on a regular basis and these have, presumably, had some influence on financing decisions in the industry. This record along with our own experience and numerous discussions with metal producers, major consumers and host governments permits certain generalizations to be made. The most important of these is that during the early 1980s. from about 1980 through 1985/6, the forecasters system- atically and substantially over- estimated metal prices. While some fore- casters did correctly anticipate a recession in the early 1980s and some consequential decline in prices, the magnitude and duration of the decline was far greater than anyone foresaw. This systematic forecasting "failure" appears to have occurred independently of the forecasting methodology employed. Moreover, its extent cannot be explained by obvious factors such as incorrect macroeconomic assumptions. Stone is considered by many to be the premium material for beauty and durability in all kinds of construction. Its use dates to the dawn of civilization and only buildings made of stone have survived from ancient times. The use of stone relative to other materials declined from the beginning of the present century reaching a low point in the third quarter, but there has been a resurgence in the use of stone in construction during the past decade, due probably, to new techniques for producing stone, a greater recognition of its beauty and durability, and greater affluence among consumers. The aesthetic appeal of stone is attested to by the many attempts to simulate it in synthetic materials. Today, natural stone is considered by many to be the ultimate in aesthetic appeal, durability, and ease of maintenance. Consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. The US Bureau of Mines reported that the total value of US consumption in 1978 was $1 13 million and that total imports were valued at $65 million in 1979 (Anon., 1980). In 1989 consumption of domestic dimension stone was valued at $208.3 million and imports at $525 million. This dramatic increase occurred after demand had decreased at an average rate of 2.5% in the two decades prior to 1978 (Anon., 1980). More than half of the imports come from Italy, but production of dimension stone has increased worldwide spectacularly. Meaningful statistics on dimension stone are hard to acquire. The finished piece of stone is a highly value-added product, but stone may be sold as rough blocks, sawed slabs, or finished product. The same piece of stone may therefore be sold and reported three or more times. Furthermore, although the quantity of stone is most commonly reported in tons, stone cladding is more often sold by the surface area and at the same price for different thicknesses. By any measure, however, the production and consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. A significant indication of the resurgence of stone was the introduction of two new trade publications during the 1980s. Stone World (Tradelink Publishing Co., Inc., Oradell, NJ), introduced in 1984 is published monthly and Dimensional Stone (Dimensional Stone Institute, Inc., Woodland Hills, CA), introduced in 1985 is published monthly. Both magazines provide useful information on new technology, market trends, producing areas and companies, and other information not previously available.

"INTRODUCTIONCrossrail will provide London and the South East of England with a world class, high-capacity railway to ease congestion on London’s public transport system and enable better access between business, residential and entertainment districts. At the heart of this £14.8bn scheme lies Farringdon Station, which will form a major interchange between Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground. The £400m Farringdon Crossrail station was awarded to a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK) in 2011, and comprises two ticket halls, two platform tunnels and a multitude of connecting tunnels all constructed using open face sprayed concrete linings (SCL). BFK appointed Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP) as their specialist SCL designer. As the main contractor for both C300/C410, the Western Running Tunnels and Station Caverns, and also for C435 Farringdon Station, BFK were in a unique position to develop strategies to reduce cost, time and risk for the Client. One such innovation involved the continuation of the TBM drives for the running tunnels right through the length of the new Farringdon platform caverns. This created large diameter precast concrete pilot tunnels for the subsequent platform enlargement using SCL. The benefits of such an approach are described in detail by St.John et al 2015. BFK also introduced another alternative strategy to reduce cost, time and risk, by proposing to abandon the TBMs in the ground (“Turn & Bury”) permanently rather than recovering them through the ticket hall shafts. This de-risked the programme, enabling critical ticket hall construction to proceed unhindered. However, one consequence of this revised strategy was an area of increased underground congestion, with two SCL tunnels (RTE2 and ES2) and a bored tunnel (complete with abandoned TBM) in close proximity to a ticket hall excavation (see Figure 1) and a sensitive, listed railway structure. Faced with this complex geometry, and combined with challenging geotechnical conditions (Gakis et al 2015), the team chose to install enhanced monitoring to study the behavior of tunnel RTE2 and provide additional assurance that the tunnels were performing as predicted. Applying advanced 3D numerical modelling and taking into account the residual tensile strength of the SCL helped avoid unnecessary reinforcement installation in primary lining and/or early installation of a secondary lining in RTE2 prior to ES2 construction."

INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal cleaning by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken the loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Netherlands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War II in the laboratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15-tph (13.6 t/h) pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of Fuel in London.51 In April 1945, operation of this pilot plant was observed by H. F. Yancey, who was so impressed with the potential of the cyclone process that, on his return to the United States, a research program on the cyclone was immediately started by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). This work led to an AIME paper in 1946 in which the first details of cyclone operation on American coals were made available.52 Commercial adoption of the cyclone proceeded in Europe, initially in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. In the United States, where coal is less costly and most of the coals are easy to clean and respond well to simpler cleaning processes, the first cyclone plant was not built until 1961.53 THEORY Before discussing the theory of a dense-medium cyclone, a brief description may be helpful to some readers who are not familiar with its basic operation. In a typical dense-medium cyclone, illustrated in Fig.7-51 a mixture of medium and raw coal enters tangentially near the top of the cylindrical section, thus forming a strong vortical flow. The refuse moves along the wall of the cyclone and is discharged through the underflow orifice. The washed coal moves toward the longitudinal axis of the cyclone and passes through the overflow orifice, or vortex finder, to the overflow chamber. Washed coal is discharged from this chamber, usually through a tangential outlet.

Recent fatal injuries occurring during pillar retreat coal mining call for better identification of the hazards and recognition of risks. Ground control hazards associated with room-and-pillar retreat mining tend to intensify with depth, requiring extra precautions in the form of additional controls. In many locations these activities are further complicated by local complexities often associated with unique or novel circumstances, such as over-mining or under-mining. One technique recently studied by NIOSH, Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), may help mine operators to mitigate the risks associated with pillar recovery operations. The approach was trialed at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia that are currently practicing pillar recovery. The first step in the MHRA process involved reviewing the segments or parts of the pillar extraction mining system and identifying associated hazards and threats to the operation. Some of the high risk hazards at these two sites included: ? Rock fall during pillar extraction covers equipment and injury occurs during recovery operations, ? Rock fall above the roof bolt horizon, potentially injuring ? workers and/or requiring recovery action, ? Rib fall under deep cover, potentially injuring workers, and; ? Strata instabilities associated with subsidence of the interburden due to simultaneously mining two seams in close vertical proximity to one another. The mines? risk assessment teams then considered each threat individually in order to systematically identify potential unwanted events. The top unwanted events were examined individually using structured risk analysis tools. The output from the process includes a list of priority existing controls for monitoring and auditing, and a second list of potential new controls. These controls consisted of: Examples of best practices, ? Enhanced communication, ? Implementing standard operating procedures (SOP), ? Protocols for emergency response actions, ? Effective layouts, ? Efficient monitoring, and; ? Successful audits. This paper documents the process as it unfolded at the two mines, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the MHRA technique as it applies to pillar recovery operations. This work was part of a larger NIOSH research project. NIOSH was responsible for: 1) facilitating the risk assessment process known as Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), 2) documenting the risk assessment process, and 3) providing mine management with a written draft summary of the risk assessment process. The results of the risk assessment represent the thoughts and opinions of the individual risk assessment teams and should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the risk assessment output by NIOSH or the University of Pittsburgh.

The geology of Wyoming has been compared to some of the richest precious metal producing regions of the world including South Africa, Western Australia, and the Superior Province of Canada. These areas are all underlain by ancient cratons that contain some of the oldest rocks on the surface of the earth. But unlike the other cratons, the Wyoming craton (also termed the Wyoming Province) has been greatly modified by Laramide tectonics which thrust slices of the ancient craton through younger Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks. Unfortunately, the nature of the Laramide tectonics left vast regions of the craton at the bottom of the Tertiary basins unavailable to direct examination, but the exposed slices in the mountain cores contain some of the best exposures of Precambrian rock in the world. The cores of these uplifts contain extensive regions of relatively unmineralized gneiss and granite that include scattered fragmented supracrustal belts formed of metamorphosed volcanic, plutonic, and sedimentary rock. Some of these supracrustal belts exhibit similarities to the gold- and nickel- rich terranes of Western Australia. Yet these areas remain incompletely explored. Archean (> 2.5 Ga) gold deposits within the Wyoming craton are primarily confined to greenstone belts and related terranes. These supracrustal belts include relatively narrow vein and shear zone deposits with strike lengths of tens of feet to more than a mile. Some exceptional deposits possess widths of greater than 15 feet to possibly as much as 300 feet, but the majority have widths of± 5 feet. These belts include Cu, Ag, W, Fe, and Cr mineralization, asbestos and pegmatites, and anomalous Ni and Sri in addition to gold. The Proterozoic terrane (<2.5 Ga) exposed in the cores of mountain ranges in southeastern Wyoming includes a thick miogeosynclinal metasedimentary succession which unconformably lies on the Archean craton. These metasedimentary rocks are separated from a predominantly metavolcanic terrane to the south by a major Precambrian suture, or shear zone. The metasedimentary rocks north of the shear include quartzite-hosted stratabound Cu-Ag-Au deposits, Au-Ag veins, and Witwatersrand-type metaconglomerates with isolated gold anomalies. The suture includes scattered base and precious metal deposits in shear zone cataclastics. South of the shear zone, the metavolcanic terrane includes scattered volcanogenic Zn-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposits, at least one Cu-Au porphyry, and two large layered mafic complexes. The northern edge of one of these layered intrusives yielded some platinum and palladium to miners at the beginning of the 20th century. Phanerozoic sediments host many precious metal anomalies. Some Au-REE anomalies occur in Cambrian conglomerates. Ag-Cu-Zn stratabound deposits are found in bleached Jurassic redbeds in the Overthrust Belt of western Wyoming. The broad Wyoming basins include many enigmatic gold occurrences and anomalies that can only partially be explained by detrital transport in fluvial systems. Many of these anomalies were probably geochemically transported and precipitated. Rocks of Late Cretaceous age along the flanks of the uplifts have numerous black sand deposits. These paleobeach placers contain concentrations of detrital heavy minerals with anomalous titanium, rare earths, and in some cases gold. Gigantic base and precious metal deposits are associated with scattered composite intrusives in the Absaroka Mountains in northwestern Wyoming. This deeply incised volcanic plateau includes several Tertiary age copper porphyry deposits with significant Cu, Mo, Ti, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag resources that rival the porphyry districts of the Basin and Range Province. In the Black Hills of northeastern Wyoming, disseminated Au-Th-REE mineralization is found in association with fenitized alkalic igneous rock. In addition to disseminated mineralization-scattered gold, fluorite, rare earth and copper veins; lead, zinc, and silver replacement lodes; and tin pegmatites are found in this region.

The electrostatic charge on spray droplets of ionic surfactant solutions and coal particles was measured and the results were correlated with the dust collection efficiency. When various surfactant were added, the magnitude of the droplet charge increased significantly and it was observed to be a function of surfactant type and concentration. The concentration of maximum droplet charge coincided with surfactant concentration where maximum collection efficiency was observed for these surfactants. Particles of coal also carried substantial amount of charge magnitude of which seemed to be a function of coal rank. Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that ionic surfactant primarily act as a strong electrostatic charge inducer for droplets. Due to interactions between these highly charged droplets and naturally charged particles, the efficiency of droplet-particle collisions play a primary role when compared to the wetting and engulfment phenomenon which could only follow a successful collision. INTRODUCTION Water spray are widely used to suppress airborne dust in mine atmospheres (Walton and Woolcock, 1960; Kobrick, 1970; Hamilton, 1974; Jayaraman et al., 1986). Several investigators have considered the use of surfactants to enhance the effectiveness of water sprays especially for difficult to wet particles such as those of coal (Glanville and Wightman, 1979). The capture of dust particles by water droplets involves droplet-particle collisions, adhesion of particles to droplets, and engulfment of particles into droplets. Surfactants affect these sub processes through their influence on droplet charge, surface tension, and wetting. The last two mechanism have been thoroughly studied in recent years (Walker et al., 1952; Cohen and Rosen, 1981; Glenville and Haley, 1982; Chander et al., 1988; 1991). However, little attention has been paid to the role of electrical charge on particles and droplets on the collision and adhesion of spray droplets and dust particles. Airborne particles of dust have long been known to carry a significant amount of electrostatic charge (Hopper and Laby, 1941; Kunkel, 1948; Kunkel, 1950; Dodd, 1952; Liu et al., 1987; Kutsuwada and Nakamura, 1989). It is reasonable to assume that presence of charge on particles will effect their agglomeration and particle-droplet interactions. Polat et al., (1991) showed that virtually all freshly generated dust particles were agglomerated in air. They suggested that electrostatic charge and humidity were important factors responsible for agglomeration. Previous theoretical studies on the interactions between charged particles and collectors by Nielsen and Hill (1976) show that, the collision efficiency is a strong function of the particle charge. In addition to charge on particles, spray droplets might also carry substantial amount of charge (Chapman, 1937;1938; Blanchard, 1958; Iribarne and Mason, 1967; Jonas and Mason, 1968; Byrne, 1977; Bailey, 1988). In theoretical studies of interactions between a spherical collector and airborne particle, it was found that the collision efficiency was significantly altered depending on whether the collector and the particles were charged. If neither the collector nor the particles carried a charge, the collision occurred by inertial and gravitational forces. The collisions took place on the front part of the collector (the front capture). If either of the collector or the particles were charged, the collision was enhanced due to the induced image forces. If both the collector and the particles were charged, the collision efficiency was significantly affected by the sign of the charge as well as its magnitude. For oppositely charged collector-particle pairs a collision could take place on the rear of the collector even if the particle flied past the collector upon approach (the rear capture) (Nielsen and Hill, 1976; Wang et al., 1986; Chang et al., 1987). On the other hand, the columbic force became negligible as the particle size increased and the inertial force became dominant. The electrostatic attraction was predominant for particles of less than about 2.5 µm in diameter. For particles larger than about 8 µm the inertia of particles was sufficient to overcome the columbic force and inertial impaction became the dominant collision mechanism (Grover and Beard, 1975; Chang, 1987). Background Iron ore is the No. 1 metal mining industry in the U.S. with dollar value of $2.3 billion in 1984 (U.S.B.M Mineral Commodity Sunnnaries , 1985). However, during the past decade this nation&apos;s iron ore industry has been subjected to a major market depression and a correspondingly downward adjustment in output. The recent trend in the curtailment of iron ore production traces a slow-down of the country&apos;s steel industry. Both pig iron and steel production have decreased significantly over the past several years. These trends are shown in Figure 1 from data collected by the federal Bureau of Mines (U.S.B.M. Mineral Commodity Summaries, 1985; U.S.B.M. Mineral Industry Surveys 1986). The industry is presently operating at less than 60% of its annual capacity. The domestic steel industry has been forced by reduced profits or losses to close facilities, curtail operations and restructure the financial status of several corporations. Companies have been sold or are trying to sell selected properties to improve their financial circumstances. Even with such actions, many of the steel companies are in very serious straits, including the seventh largest steel company, LTV, which has filed for bankruptcy. Many of the major steel companies have financial interests in iron ore mining and thus their adverse economic conditions directly reflect those operations. Several iron ore producers have been shut down including Reserve Mining Company in May, 1986 and Butler Taconite in June, 1985. The latter recently filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. A1 so in mid-1986, U.S. Steel Corporation, owner of the Minntac mine and iron ore processing plant, underwent corporate restructuring. The effect on their Minnesota plant is not known at this time. An excellent summary of the interrelationship of the iron ore companies and the steel producers has been provided by Skillings (1986), and an analysis of the iron ore situation was given by Robert F. Anderson, CEO of M. A. Hanna Company, in his keynote address at the 1986 University of Minnesota Mining Symposium (Anderson, 1986). Steel imports to the United States decreased slightly in 1985 because of import restrictions, but the long-term import situation remains dim and uncertain. As shown in Figure 2, the imports averaged about 25% in 1985, and the preliminary indications are that this figure could be as high as 30% when the final 1986 information is collected by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. At best, the industry can only hope for imports to stabilize at a constant level in the near future. Although the tonnage is small, the quantity of U.S. export steel has fallen over 50%. With many other materials replacing steel , the projected demand through 1990 is expected to increase only about 1% per year. Consequently, 1986 U.S. iron ore production will probably be 15% lower than in 1985. The 41 mil lion tons of iron ore production expected in 1986 represents only 53% of the industrial capacity, which is about 74.5 mil lion tons. Over 95% of this iron ore is in the form of beneficiated pellets. Today there is not an iron ore producer west of the Mississippi River, nor is there any production in the South. The Birmingham (Alabama) iron ore industry has been shut down since 1971. The western producers ceased operations in the early 1980&apos;s. Only the taconite operations in Minnesota and the plants in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan remain as our major domestic iron ore source. The economic situation for both the iron ore producers and the steel industry can be described as confused and in turmoil. Such a condition directly impacts the iron ore processing plants&apos; operations and plans for the future. Plant Practice At present the nation&apos;s eight major operating iron ore mines, listed below, are concentrated in northern Minnesota (Mesabi Range) and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Marquette Range). The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m. The pH of the groundwater in this heavy metal-radium plume is 4 to 5, whereas elsewhere in zone of groundwater with high dissolved solids, the pH is above 6. INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco&apos;s Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and &apos;bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH&apos;s and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. This paper discusses the ways in which the metals industries dealt with surplus capacity in the past, primarily the twenty years, 1950 - 1970. During this period, the bulk of metals production in the market-economy countries was controlled by private sector companies. Since then, public sector companies have played an increasingly important role in the metals industries of the market-economy countries. Of course, the change was not overnight. It occurred gradually over a period of many years. Indeed, by 1965, several developing nations had adopted policies of government control of metal operations previously in private hands. The metals industries are so many, so large and so diverse that the constraints of time make it impossible to deal with all segments. To illustrate the problems of surplus capacity in the metals industries during the period, this paper focusses primarily on three metals. One experienced rapid market expansion between 1950 and 1970; one had a growth more or less in line with the expansion of the world economy; and one lagged well behind the pace of industrial expansion. No one will be surprised if aluminum is identified as the metal with rapid growth; copper is identified as the metal that kept pace with the world economy; and tin is identified as the laggard. Individual computations of the rate of growth for these metals show some variations, but most estimates place the increase in aluminum consumption in the market economy countries between 1950 and 1970 at a compound annual rate of about 8%. The corresponding figure for copper is a compound rate of 4%. Tin consumption showed no growth. A widely accepted point of view is that sharply rising demand will force the price of a commodity to increase substantially in order to attract a necessary expansion of supply. The corollary to this is that stagnant demand will hold prices down, as there is no need to stimulate new supply and it may be necessary to force marginal producers out of the market. The experience with aluminum, copper and tin in the years 1950-1970 does not support this theory. In 1950, the average prices in the United States market as reported by the American Bureau of Metal Statistics were 17.74 a pound for aluminum, 21.24 a pound for copper, and 95.54 a pound for tin. The corresponding figures in 1970 were 28.74 a pound for aluminum, 57.74 a pound for copper and 174.24 a pound for tin. Aluminum, with the greatest market growth, rose by 60%, whereas tin rose 82% and copper by 172%. Clearly, other factors were a more important influence on price than was the trend of demand To revert now to the capacity issue, during the period under review aluminum demand was rising so sharply that that industry had no sustained problem with surplus capacity. Instead, if anything, capacity may at times have been a constraint on demand. The industry succeeded in attaining explosive market growth through imaginative research and promotion programs. Some of this growth was the result of substitution of aluminum for other commodities – steel, copper, wood and glass as examples. But much of the growth was the consequence of developing entirely new products through technological innovation. Prior to World War 11, the number of aluminum producers was extremely limited. Alcoa and Alcan in North American and Pechiney and Alusuisse in Europe were the dominant firms. The developing countries had virtually no production and in Japan and Germany production was only a small fraction of the North American output. During the War years the United States had financed the construction of many new facilities. After the war these plants were sold by the government to Reynolds and Kaiser in order to foster more competition in the market. Subsequently many other concerns became aluminum producers, both in the United States and elsewhere and competition for markets intensified.

INTRODUCTION Truck haulage of muck in underground mining operations has been in use around the world for many years. From the late 1.950s into the early 1970s, haulage by means of load-haul-dump (LHD) units challenged haulage by means of trucks, and, to a large degree, LHD units dominated the trackless concept of moving mate¬rial underground. However, beginning in 1975, the emphasis began to shift back to the use of trucks, with LHD units assuming the secondary role of loading the trucks. Over the years, several manufacturers have been offering trucks with capacities ranging from 4.5 to 45.4 t (5 to 50 st) and with features that specifically address the constraints of underground operation. TRUCK TYPES Three different types of trucks are available for use underground, namely the tip dumpers, telescoping dumpers, and push-plate dumpers. The following para¬graphs describe each of these three types. Tip Dumpers Tip dumpers are designed to lift the truck box, using gravity to dump the load out the rear of the box. The primary application of these trucks is in the haulage of muck to the surface. However, these trucks also may be utilized underground, if a chamber is provided to accommodate the raised truck box at the dumping point. Fig. 1 illustrates a four-wheel drive truck with a 10.0-t (11-st) capacity; this truck is only 1.9 m (6.25 ft) wide and is designed specifically to follow narrow and winding vein courses. Fig. 2 illustrates a two-wheel drive tip dumper with a 24.5-t (27-st) capacity; this truck operates on 12% grades with firm dry surfaces and in modes both loaded-up and loaded¬down. Telescoping Dumpers Telescoping dumpers specifically address the constraints imposed by low back heights, and they represent an optimization of compressed envelope size with maximum payload capacity. Figs. 3 and 4 illus¬trate a typical telescoping dumper with a capacity of 18.1 t (20 st). Fig. 3 shows the box in position for carrying the load, and Fig. 4 shows the same truck with the box in the full-dumping position. Fig. 5 illustrates the loading and dumping cycles. Fig. 6 illustrates an approximation of how an LHD unit with an eject-o-dump (EOD) bucket would be used to load over the rear of this type of truck. Fig. 6 shows a low-profile telescoping truck in the first stage of loading, with a 6.8-t (7.5-st) LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket. A loader with a smaller capacity and a narrower bucket would allow the bucket to fit inside the truck box and would achieve an even lower loading height than that illustrated. Gen erally, an LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket and teamed with a telescoping dump truck can be used with a lower back height than could any other front-end loader and truck team. Push-Plate Dumpers Push-plate dumpers are similar to telescoping Bump¬ers, except that they do not have the two-stage box. Instead, push-plate dumpers utilize a single push plate to discharge the load out the rear of the box. Gen erally, these units are limited to payload capacities of about 9 t (10 st). Fig. 7 illustrates a typical push-plate dumper.

A small size quarrying activity (3 different quarries with an overall production in blocks less than 10.000 m3/year) has been exploiting for a long time the ?Tonalite? deposit of Adamello-Presanella. In 1967, given the outstanding natural beauty of the area, a natural park has been established with the aim of preserving environmental quality and, at the same time, of providing a sustainable development to the area. Because of the potential impacts of a mining activity in such a context, a specific study has been recently carried out in order to define if and how the quarries could co-exist with the park, beyond the ?administrative results? of a classic environmental impact assessment. The paper deals with the process that drove to the conclusion that the activities are not ?a priori? incompatible with the aims of the park. In the opinion of the authors, a responsible quarry management, which must take inspiration from the care given to environment by traditional alpine productive activities (e.g. the use of water, of wood, and of the stone itself), and take advantage of modern technologies in terms of emissions and safety, can be considered not only compatible with the protected area, but even able to positively contribute to the protection of the land and environment (Barisone et al., 2001). A series of specific prescriptions, which have been adopted by the Park Authorities after this study, are also discussed in the paper: only the definition of suitable spatial and temporal limits, the adoption of effective technical practices and a strict control are considered to be able to drive this ?exceptional? activity towards the final goal of real sustainability.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Bruce mine of Cyprus Mines Corp. is located in Bagdad, AZ. The mining method used is open cut-and-fill. Of the annual production of 81 647 t (90,000 st), approximately 83% is taken from load-haul-dump (LHD) stopes and the balance from slusher stopes. All ore is produced from the area between the 1250 level and the 2300 level. The average travel time from the shaft pocket to the stope is approximately 5 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The Bruce ore body occurs in quartz-sericite schist with Dick rhyolite on the footwall and andesite on the hanging wall. Diabase dikes are found in the hanging wall; there is also a dike coming off the footwall and crosscutting the ore body. All of the rock types are of the Precambrian Yavapai series and have been subjected to regional metamorphism. A composite of the ore body is given in Fig. 1. The deposit is of massive sulfides occurring as a steeply dipping replacement body. On the upper levels the ore is veinlike with widths from 0.6 to 4.6 m (2 to 15 ft), dipping at 1.4 to 1.5 rad (80° to 85°). On the lower levels the ore is dipping from I to 1.2 rad (60° to 70°) with widths from 3 to 16.8 m (10 to 55 ft). The strike length varies between 107 to 183 m (350 to 600 ft). The rhyolite footwall generally has a knife-edge contact with the massive sulfides. The exceptions to this are the upper levels where there is a 1.5 to 3 m (5 to 10 ft) band of silicified sericite schist between the sulfides and the rhyolite. In the southern part of the ore body the hanging wall is tuffaceous andesite and andesite. In this area the contact is generally sharp and easy to follow. However, to the north there is a large chlorite schist zone that crosscuts the bedding and comes in contact with the massive sulfides. This is apparently due to hydrothermal alteration of the andesite. The chlorite schist is highly mineralized with chalcopyrite and pyrite and quite often forms economic pockets of ore. In the massive sulfides the chief ore minerals are sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Pyrite is the predominant sulfide with considerable pyrrhotite throughout. Bright arsenopyrite ouhedrons in fine grain massive sulfides are quite common. Occasionally small amounts of galena are seen, usually near the foot or hanging wall contacts. On rare occasions tennanite is associated with massive arsenopyrite. Minor amounts of quartz, calcite, and un¬replaced remnants of sericite schist occur, but essentially pyrite is the gangue in which the ore minerals occur. The ore values are in excess of 3.5% copper and 12.5% zinc with some silver and rare gold as byproducts. Ground Conditions The massive sulfides are generally self-supporting. One exception is in the 1850 stope where the ore body is 9 to 11 m (30 to 55 ft) wide and 152 m (500 ft) long. There are flat to shallow dipping slips and seams in the ore, creating extremely blocky ground. For support, old 25.4-mm (1-in.) hoist ropes were installed tensioned to 27 t (30 st), and then cement grouted over the entire length in longholes [14 to 15 in (40 to 50 ft) in length) drilled on 3-m (10-ft) centers from the level above. This has tied the formation together very successfully and virtually eliminated the blocky ground condition. Both the hanging wall and footwall are quite shaley in some areas. Reasons for Adopting Trackless Open Cut-and-Fill Methods First, any method other than open cut-and-fill would have caused too much dilution. The use of rubber-tired mining equipment in the pro¬duction stopes requires a footwall ramp. The inclines in ore will be mined out, so this ramp in the footwall will provide access to and from the stopes (Fig. 2). This incline is very expensive, but necessary to convert existing stopes to LHD mining. &apos;The final cost of ore mined by the LHD machines has not been determined. As of 1972, tons per manshift in the 2150 stope-the only one to complete a full cut-had increased from 7.58 t (8.36 st) to 12.83 t (14.14

INTRODUCTION Standards limiting the annual exposure of United States uranium miners to radon daughters were established in 1967 at 12 Working-Level-Months (WLM). The standard was reduced by a factor of three, to 4 WLM, in 1971. Currently, the standard is again being examined to determine if it should be changed. Since 1967, Union Carbide has calculated individual monthly exposures in company and contract-operated mines located on the Colorado Plateau. Although it has been possible, by extensive ventilation control measures and accurate routine sampling, to meet the current exposure standard, there are many miners whose exposures closely approach the 4 WLM standard for any given year. However, it was noted that for miners who work for any extended period of years the [average] exposure was much less than the standard. The primary purpose of this paper is to show that, in effect, any annual exposure standard to radon daughters results in a long-term exposure considerably below that standard. Further, most miners, due to their job assignments and/or employment habits, only receive a small fraction of the standard. HISTORY OF EXPOSURE STANDARDS Prior to 1967, radiation protection in uranium mines was fundamentally based on a radon daughter concentration guide. In 1960, the American Standards Association published mine and mill radiation protection standards (ASA-1960). The Colorado Department of Mines, in 1961, adoped a standard which followed the ASA Standard and provided that if concentrations exceeded 10 Working Levels (WL), the area was to be shut down until corrective action was taken; if between 3 and 10 WL, corrective action was to be initiated; between 1 and 3, additional samples were to be taken and individual exposures evaluated; and if below 1 WL, conditions were considered to be controlled. In 1967, the U.S. Department of Labor issued the first exposure standard which called originally for limiting annual exposures to 3.6 WLM but which was later changed to 12 WLM. The complicated regulatory developments leading to this standard have been described elsewhere (Beverly-1969, Rock & Walker-1970). Effective July 1, 1971, this exposure standard was lowered to 4 WLM per year, which is the current standard. Over the past year, there has been speculation about the potential risk to uranium miners working at the present standard. A recent NIOSH Study Group Report (NIOSH-1980) concluded: "There is also strong evidence that a substantial risk extends to and below 120 WLM of exposure." The 120 WLM corresponds to a miner working in uranium mines for 30 years, a rare occurrence, at an exposure rate of 4 WLM per year, an even rarer occurrence. On the other hand, the General Accounting Office, in a recent Report to the Congress (GAO-1981), was very critical of reports by NIOSH on general low-level radiation risks. The GAO recognized that”...important questions remain unanswered about the cancer risks of low-level ionizing radiation exposure;" and recommended that Congress enact legislation giving statutory authority to an interagency committee to coordinate Federal research on health effects of ionizing radiation exposure. The International Commission on Radiation Protection at its March, 1980 meeting recommended limiting the inhalation of radon daughters to 0.02 J per year, equivalent to 0.4 WL, which on an annual basis would be 4.8 WLM and noted it is common to reduce this figure by 20% for allowance in the case of uranium miners for external and/or dust exposure(Sowby-1980). This is essentially equal to the present standard of 4 WLM. As earlier uranium miner exposure studies are reevaluated, and as new studies are conducted, it is important that the relationship between regulatory standards and the resulting actual exposures be recognized. UNION CARBIDE URANIUM MINING EXPERIENCE Union Carbide started mining Colorado Plateau uranium-vanadium ores in the late 1920s for the contained vanadium values. In the early 1950s, the Atomic Energy Commission contracted Union Carbide to produce uranium at mills located in Uravan and Rifle, Colorado. The company now has over fifty years of mining experience in the area. Some mines are operated as company mines and others are operated by private mining companies under a contractual arrangement. Ventilation, sampling, and exposure calculations are carried out the same in contract mines as in company-operated mines. Data presented in this report do not differentiate between company or contract employees and include all employees who worked underground any portion of a year in Union Carbide mines from 1967 through 1980. At the peak of uranium mining activities in 1970, there were 577 miners employed at year end (285 company employees and 292 contract) and 52 mines in operation (8 company-operated and 44 contract mines). Contract mines varied from two-man operations up to 15 employees. Company mines were generally the larger operations and employed from 20 to 100 miners.

INTRODUCTION Use of air-cooling or refrigeration equipment in underground mines is needed when conventional ventila¬tion techniques do not maintain acceptable environ¬mental temperatures in working areas. Because refrig¬eration can be very expensive, it should be implemented only after all possible and practical steps have been taken to eliminate or reduce heat sources in the mine. As an example, to prevent the main ventilation fans from contributing heat to mine air, they should be located in the air return and not in the air intake. It is particularly important to prevent any direct contact between hot water and ventilation air, especially in mines which encounter large flows of hot fissure water. Any water hotter than the prevailing wet-bulb temperature of the ambient air must be removed by pipes located as close as possible to the water source. This hot water must not be allowed free contact with the incoming ventilation air at any time during the water&apos;s passage out of the mine. Although insulation of the pipes carrying the hot water is seldom necessary, direct contact between the air and the water must be prevented so the warm water cannot evaporate. REVIEW OF COOLING PRACTICES Spot Coolers vs. Centralized Refrigeration To eliminate a few specific hot places in an otherwise cool mine, it is possible to use devices known as "spot coolers." A typical spot cooler that uses chilled water is shown in Fig. 1. These devices consist of self-contained refrigeration units that are often mounted on rail cars for haulage to hot spots. The cooling capacities of such spot coolers usually are limited to about 100 kW or 30 "refrigeration tons." A refrigeration ton represents a cooling rate that produces 1.0 st of ice in 24 hr; that is a cooling rate of 3.517 kW (200 Btu per min). Typically, the electric-power consumption to drive the compressor motor of the refrigeration plant in mines is 1.0 kW per refrigeration ton, corresponding to a coefficient of per¬formance of about 3.5. The principal difference between spot coolers and centralized refrigeration plants is the method of re¬jecting heat from the refrigeration system. Centralized refrigeration plants always discharge heat into the reject or return airflow of the mine; often that is the primary influence in selecting the location for the underground refrigeration plant. Heat from spot coolers usually is rejected into drain water or into air that is not flowing to the location requiring the cooling. As a result, spot coolers remove heat from troublesome hot spots in the mine, injecting that heat-plus the electrical energy used by the cooling unit itself-into other working areas where the ambient conditions are cooler. In effect, this is "robbing Peter to pay Paul." In deep, extensive mines, spot coolers usually pro¬vide only temporary and, over the long term, expensive solutions to localized cooling problems. Centralized re¬frigeration plants are preferred for such mines, with cooling distributed throughout the mine as required. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical underground centralized re¬frigeration plant. Centralized plants lend themselves to improved maintenance at reduced costs while offering the economy of size. Refrigeration plants of larger unit sizes have considerably lower initial costs than smaller unit sizes. The remainder of this chapter is devoted to large refrigeration plants, with no further consideration of spot coolers. Cost of Refrigeration Total Cost: The total cost of refrigeration amounts to about $200/kW of cooling per year (1981 US $). This total cost breaks down into approximately three equal parts: 1) Financial charges, which include the interest and amortization on the capital cost of the initial installation, and the cost of necessary underground excavations. 2) Operating and maintenance costs which include the cost of the electric power to drive the refrigeration plant&apos;s compressors. 3) Distribution costs which include costs for pump¬ing, insulated piping, and air-to-water heat exchangers. The local cost of electric power, the number of operating months per year, and the method of refrigera¬tion distribution all contribute to the actual costs in¬curred in a given application. However, the variations usually are limited to no more than ±30% of the $200/ kW per year total cost figure. Cost Per Ton: Refrigeration cost per ton of mineral production can be calculated if the annual production tonnage from the refrigerated section of the mine is known. In most cases, this cost will be less than $1 .00/t. However, in deep mines with high rock temperatures, such as those found in South Africa, the total cost of refrigeration can increase to several dollars per ton of broken rock. INTRODUCTION Geotechnical models, particularly those based on the finite element method, have been available to aid in en¬gineering design of underground mining excavations for over ten years. Despite this fact there are remarkably few cases of their use in mine design documented in the literature. It is therefore to be anticipated that many potential users of these models are relatively unaware of their capabilities and limitations and also of the form and detail of geotechnical data needed for their success¬ful application. This subsection attempts to address this problem by discussing the different types of numerical models now available and by noting how some of them have been used to study a variety of problems associated with underground mining. The subsection concludes by discussing the applica¬tion of the displacement discontinuity method to the de¬sign of possible mining systems for the copper-nickel deposits of northeastern Minnesota. The object of the analyses, which were nonsite specific, was to determine the significance of geotechnical parameters, such as ini¬tial stress and rock structure, on the stability of under¬ground excavations and hence to provide guidance for future geotechnical investigation. NUMERICAL MODELS In the geomechanical design of underground mining openings, use is made of numerical models that repre¬sent or simulate the large-scale mechanical behavior of rock. There has been less interest in analysis involving fluid flow and heat transfer, but with increasing interest in such areas as in-situ retorting and solution mining it is likely that there will be a growing need for numerical models embracing and coupling all three physical proc¬esses. However, the emphasis in this subsection will be on mechanical behavior. Models which simulate such behavior will be divided into two groups: continuum models and discontinuum models. These will be dis¬cussed in turn in order that some insight into alternative solution strategies and their merits may be gained. Continuum Models Almost all geomechanical numerical models must be classed as continuum models even though particular computer codes incorporate special provisions for rep¬resenting discontinuities such as faults, bedding planes, or joints. They are continuum models because they pro¬vide solutions for cases where material behavior is governed by the differential equations of continuum mechanics. Two basic solution strategies for such equa¬tions may be identified immediately: the differential ap¬proach and the integral approach. In the differential approach a means of approximating the differential equations over the entire region of interest is sought. In the integral approach use is made of fundamental solutions from continuum mechanics, and these are used to construct a solution to the whole problem, making approximations only on the boundaries of the region of interest. The several differential and integral methods are identified in Table 1. Differential Methods: Problems in continuum me¬chanics involve the solution of three types of partial differential equations. Two of these govern the behavior in so-called initial value problems, in which variables change both in time and in space. Examples of such problems include nonsteady heat transfer and fluid flow, and stress wave propagation. The last type of partial differential equation governs the behavior in boundary value problems. In these, variation is in space but not in time. Solution of initial value problems may be achieved in two significantly different methods: implicit and ex¬plicit. The differences between these two methods will be illustrated by considering a very simple initial value problem, that of one-dimensional heat diffusion. The equation governing this process may be written as: [ ] where T is temperature, K is thermal conductivity, p is density, c is specific heat, t is time, and x is the spacial coordinate. In finite difference form this equation might be written as: [ ] where the superscripts refer to the time and the sub¬scripts to the spacial location. Several solution strategies for this equation have been used. Two important ones may be illustrated very simply by discussing the signifi¬cance of the superscript * on the right-hand side of the equation. If i + 1 is substituted for * then the second derivative of the temperature with respect to distance is evaluated at the end of the next time step (using tem¬peratures not already known). Such an approach leads to a set of equations involving unknown temperatures and a solution procedure which is referred to as being implicit. The important characteristic of the implicit procedure is that it leads to a set of equations that must be solved for each time at which the temperature dis¬tribution is required. If instead of substituting (i + 1) for the superscript *, i is substituted, the following equation is obtained: [ ] {In this case the new temperature is defined in terms of an already known temperature distribution.
