The propensity of coal spontaneous combustion can be evaluated using various laboratory testing methods such as R70 adiabatic tests, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and critical self-heating temperature (CSHT) methods. Each of the methods has its unique characteristics and index for classifying the propensity of self-ignition of coals. Accountable relationships among the propensity indices of different methods should be established. Using the newly established R and TGA testing setups in our ventilation laboratory, samples from US coal mines have been collected and tested. 70 The TGA is a relatively new quantitative method. A test can be conducted in a relatively short time. The temperature and weight of the sample can be measured with high precision and then used to determine the activation energy of the coal which is a good indicator for potential of self-heating. Under a specific experimental design, the TGA technique could perform the proximate analysis for determining coal quality parameters (e.g., moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash content). These parameters can be used in an empirical equation for assessing the potential of coal self-ignition. The trend of activation energies determined using TGA techniques and adiabatic tests are reasonably consistent with each other. As a case study, a comparative analysis of these two methods for determining activation energy was made on coal samples collected from Indiana. The kinetics of the spontaneous combustion mechanism has been explained. If the functional groups of a coal are easier to be activated with a small amount of activation energy at a relatively low temperature, the coal will has a higher potential of self-heating. With the kinetic and coal quality parameters determined by the TGA setup, it has been found that the coal with low potential of self-ignition has low self-heating rate, high activation energy and high minimum self-heating temperature.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon's pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon's pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (15%) of Professor Gershon's pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

Booster fans, large underground fans, can increase the volumetric efficiency of ventilation systems by helping to balance the pressure and quantity distribution throughout a mine, reducing leakage and reducing the total power requirement. However, in ventilation systems that use booster fans there is a potential for system recirculation, the leakage of return air to intake air, and also for localized recirculation near the fan through the bulkhead and airlock doors. Air that is recirculated locally decreases the system efficiency because the quantity of air flow through the fan increases without increasing the airflow throughout the system. To understand the detailed flow characteristics of a ventilation system with a booster fan, two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were developed using the software Ansys-FLUENT. Though two-dimensional models do not represent the full complexity of the flow dynamics, they do provide a good representation of the flow characteristics and they allow for a qualitative analysis of how the flow dynamics are affected by the system characteristics. The CFD models were used to evaluate how the number of booster fans, the booster fan placement, the location and geometry of the fan installation and the construction of the airlock system affect the flow characteristics and the localized efficiency of the ventilation system.

The mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources. However, consolidations in the mining and mining service industries, along with a generational departure of experienced industry professionals, is challenging today’s mining companies. These challenges are not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies. They oftentimes lack for operating properties to draw experienced professionals from. Also, juniors have to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This article discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development (Anatolia) in developing its Çöpler gold project in central Turkey.

According to the previous research, it is found that the thickness of cover is mostly less than 100 m for highwall mining system. However, for most of the Chinese surface coal mines, the mining depth is over 150 m; on the other hand, the shovel-truck is the most common mining technology. As a result, a lot of residual coal will be remained around end-walls. Considering these facts, the calculated methodology of highwall mining system under thick cover is presented in this paper. Meanwhile, numerical simulation of highwall mining system under thick cover was carried out. The outcome shows that the calculated methodology for pillar stability of highwall mining system under thick cover presented in this paper is acceptable. In other words, the highwall mining system is feasible to extract the residual coal around end-walls in Chinese surface coal mines. Thus, not only coal recovery ratio can be improved, but also can increase the production life of surface coal mines in China.

Flawed mining studies have been major contributors to poor investment decisions in mining for many years, contributing to the long period of poor industry profitability. Most of the major mining houses have now adopted quite formal processes and quality standards for mining studies to reduce the potential for poor investment decisions in the future. Other organisations such as the World Bank also have specific requirements for particular types of studies, such as bankable studies. This increasing requirement for rigour and discipline means a highly structured and phased sequence of studies is now required along with the development and adoption of industry-wide standards in mine ventilation studies. New terms in the study process such as ?independent peer review? and ?hold and review? are assisting in this process. More traditional terms such as ?feasibility study? and ?pre-feasibility study? now have much more precise technical definitions. Specific standards for the ventilation components of the various phases of a mining study are proposed in this paper.

Economically favored Cr and Cu leaching out process from spent power plant fly ash (PPFA) had been investigated. PPFA, bearing of C, S, V, Ni, Cu and Cr, has been widely used as an assistant fuel in cement industry. Recent environmental regulation in S. Korea prohibits using PPFA as a fuel. Many researchers have also studied on extraction V and Ni from PPFA. Due to low concentration of V and Ni, 2% and 1%, respectively, economical and environmental friendly process could not be found. In this study, Cu and Cr have been removed in an economical way and which satisfied with KS Extraction Test. The rest unburned carbon, V2O5 and NiO2 in residue were found to be applicable for indoor and outdoor colored bricks or deodorant panel. Various parameters such as pH, lixiviates and time on leaching behavior were investigated in order to leach Cr and Cu remaining C, V and Ni. These preceding factors, coupled with the in-house retention of a core project group that fully understands the breadth of skills and abilities needed to undertake development of multiple large projects successfully, have been the cornerstone of Cyprus Amax’s project development success.

In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

Breaks in coal slurry impoundments can threaten the lives and health of area residents, destroy homes and businesses and contaminate water supplies. This dangerous potential looms over coalmining regions in West Virginia and throughout Appalachia. The Coal Impoundment Project was begun in June 2003 to provide an inventory and mapping of active and abandoned impoundments in West Virginia. The project also provides the public with specific information about the impoundments in their communities. It is dedicated to alerting residents of danger and evacuation plans, reducing risk to residents and finding alternatives to impoundments. Since its first year, more than 100 impoundment sites have been added to the project’s Website.

The first part of this article is a review of industry techniques and styles during the past 50 years. It is followed by my career history during the same period. The second part covers my ideas about what works in mineral exploration. These include estimates about discovery costs, thoughts about education of explorationists, organization of exploration groups and my opinions about the relative value of exploration techniques. Evolution of exploration techniques [Table 1] shows the evolution of mineral exploration techniques and styles from 1950 to 2000. During the first half of that period, there was a progressive increase in exploration drilling. During the second half, there was a decrease in prospecting and an increase in high technology, indirect exploration and a rapid increase in discovery cost.

The traditional method for training personnel in the mining and other heavy industries has been face-to-face, either via a lecturer in a classroom or through an apprenticeship. With the advent of applications tools such as video, computers, and the Internet, however, a much broader range of training delivery methods is available. Especially exciting are the broad capabilities of multimedia packages that combine the best features of numerous delivery methods. Applying multimedia environments in training holds great potential, especially when there is considerable difficulty in reconstructing real training environments. The authors discuss various delivery methods currently used in training employees, including perceived advantages and disadvantages of those methods. The authors then discuss and evaluate current computer-based training efforts of the mining industry and present an example of a multimedia training tool.

Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5. La Oroya zinc ferrite (19.5% Zn, 26.6% Fe, 0.052% Ga, 0.075% In) was roasted with coal under conditions more oxidizing than normally used in a Waelz kiln, and the roasted residues were leached with 200 g/L H2SO4. Overall zinc recoveries of up to 97% were achieved, with 35% of the zinc reporting to the fume after roasting at 1,100°C with a bituminous coal addition of 20%. Under these conditions, 93.2% of the Cd, 13.4% of the Cu, 33% of the Ga, 61% of the In and 18.2% of the Pb were recovered either in the fume or in the leach solution. At 2006 metal prices, the value of the recovered metals is comparable to that obtained from commercial Waelz kiln processing of this residue. Zinc in the franklinite (ZnFe2O4) mineral is reduced to zinc vapor, and, after oxidation, some of the zinc is found as ZnO or as Zn2SiO4 in the roasted residue. Iron reacts to form either hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4), with no metallic iron detected in the roasted residue, and less than 2% of the iron is solubilized during leaching. The residue produced after roasting and leaching is, therefore, much more stable than the residue from Waelz kiln processing and should be suitable for disposal in a landfill.

Hydraulic separators are commonly used for particle size classification and gravity concentration of minerals and coal. Unfortunately, the efficiency of these processes can be quite low due to poor equipment design and variations in feed consistency. To help alleviate these problems, an industry-driven R&D program has been undertaken to develop a new generation of hydraulic separators that are more efficient and less costly to operate and maintain. Two of the most promising technologies, the CrossFlow and HydroFloat separators, have now been tested at industrial sites. The data obtained from these sites have been used to illustrate the potential performance improvements that can be realized through the application of these high-efficiency separators.

Contract 240 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link comprises construction of twin4.7 km long running tunnels through a densely populated area of East London. The tunnels were constructed by EPBM in Sands and Sandy Clays, passing 4.4 m below the existing London Underground tunnels, and at depths of 20–30m below ground level beneath the Great Eastern railway lines into London Liverpool Street and a series of railway bridges and hundreds of buildings. This paper describes how the project team managed the challenges relating to the issue of settlement: mitigating settlement effects, prioritising the structures to be assessed, controlling resource expenditure by incentives and flexible response to urgent work relating to unforeseen events such as ground collapse and discovery of unusual structures.

Explosions in underground coal mines have been a serious safety concern since the advent of mining; despite significant technological advances, they are still occurring. Parameters such as barometric pressure, geological changes, and changes in ventilation can contribute to an explosion. These factors can be monitored with available and developing technologies to create algorithms that predict when explosions are more likely to occur. This paper reviews current underground atmospheric monitoring systems and related regulations around the world. In addition, suggestions for improvement and implications for explosion prevention are discussed.

Iodine is a bluish-black, crystalline solid with sub-metallic luster, and has a specific gravity of 4.93. It volatilizes (sublimates) at ordinary temperatures into a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. Iodine is the least active of the halogens, all of which readily displace it. Only slightly soluble in water, iodine also dissolves in carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, giving a deep violet solution. The primary sources for iodine production are sub-surface brines associated with petroleum and natural gas deposits, and as a byproduct from nitrate deposits in Chilean desert caliche. The largest source of iodine is seawater which contains 0.05 ppm, or about 31 Mt (34 million st). Seaweed of the family Laminaria can extract and accumulate up to 0.45 percent iodine on a dry basis. Seaweed was an important source of iodine prior to 1959. However, it remains a significant source of iodine in the diets of many populations throughout the world.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. The use of a thickener, without filtration, to produce a non-settling paste (also called thickened tailings) with non-Newtonian rheology has been practiced in Australia for many years for the disposal of red mud. The application of paste thickening technology outside of alumina is relatively new. Interest and installations in paste thickening are rapidly growing. Water shortages and environmental pressures make consideration of thickening tailings to solids concentrations within the paste range necessary in most new tailings projects. The paste thickeners at the DeBeers CTP plant in Kimberley, South Africa are the latest example of paste tailings disposal on the surface, also called “stacking”. Houman (2003) The use of a paste thickener as an alternative to filtration for mine paste backfill is a more recently developed application. This paper describes the principles of design and general operating characteristics of a paste thickener compared to the conventional and high-rate thickener. The application and operating performance of paste thickeners in mine backfill is discussed as an example. An integrated approach to process design is described that matches the performance of the thickener, pumping system, and application on a common rheological basis to ensure that none of these steps prevents achieving process performance targets.
