A case study describing the expansion of Marion County landfill is presented. The exapansion area is located on a deep mined area. Finite element analyses were used to predict the surface subsidence and associated tensile strains on the landfill liner of the expansion site. A synthetically reinforced liner system is recommended to minimize the impact of the subsurface movements on the integrity of the liner system.

Extraction of hard coal reserves, but also of mineral resources in general in the underground coal mines includes in itself many anthropogenic interventions in the earth crust. These interventions are closely associated with the solution of stability problems in the mine and with occupational safety. One of potential applications of such geo-technical interventions in rock mass is the chemical grouting technology. The chemical grouts are very suitable to affect the physical and chemical properties of rock mass. With the present development of chemical grouts, primarily based on polymers, there come into existence new composite materials during the grouting process (the so called geo-composites), which properties significantly differ from the original rock. An important factor, which affects a choice of chemical grouts and at the same time the effectiveness of grouting technology is the resulting properties of geo-composites. The properties of a coal geo-composite differ from the ones of the unmodified coal seam. On the basis of the laboratory geo-mechanical tests, the differences of properties of both material types were found. While the pure coal samples were destroyed very brittle and explosive, the geo-composite samples were making higher level of tenacity and load bearing ability after overstep of material strength. The presented paper discusses the different behaviour of these original and modified coal samples. The X-ray CT scans were used for observation and demonstration of failure evolution in these samples of pure coal and coal geo-composites after compressive loading.

SHELDON P. WIMPFEN The measure of the success of any mining operation is the size of the difference between sales realization and cost of product, including operating, sales, administra¬tive, capital and others. Evaluation of a mining project necessitates projecting costs and sales realization as accurately as possible. Possible variations in specific cost elements and sales prices must be considered. To accomplish this, project studies should include giving effect to possible fluctuations to determine the break¬even points with varying costs and prices. Development of cost data is never an easy task. Mining is characterized by a great variety of conditions which result in still more variables. Achieving realistic figures as of any specific time involves consideration of changes, which may be frequent, in labor-contract terms and equipment used, variations in working condi¬tions and mining practices, and changes in mineralization and metallurgy. The purchasing power of the dollar, which has been declining persistently, also affects the situation at any given time. The only thing that can be said of costs, with certainty, is that they will change. With this in mind, the "guideline" data in this section are offered for the use of the mining engineer. It was provided for the most part by representative companies, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. In reviewing the tabu¬lations and other material it is of course necessary to remember that the data presented are valid only for the time periods specified, and will change with changing economic conditions in any other. 31.1-CAPITAL COST OF PLANTS Plant capital costs are set forth in Tables 31-6 and 31-7 by year of construction. To estimate capital cost of plants built in future years, various cost bases and indexes are utilized. An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting an investigation to develop remediation techniques for residential water wells whose yield has been affected in the long term, by underground mining. Initial work relating to this project was conducted in 1984-1987 at a room and pillar mine in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Piezometer nest data from the room and pillar mine reveals that a downward gradient in piezometric head exists in shallow strata as a result of drainage into the underlying mine void. The vertical gradient in head in turn results in well bore leakage in open-hole water wells. The relative yield of valley wells is only slightly affected however because the high surficial recharge rate through fractures more than compensates for fracture leakage into the underlying mine. The relative affect of well bore leakage on well yield is greater in certain hillside and hilltop wells that have comparatively low inflow rates at shallow depths. The static water level of such wells is determined to a much greater extent by the chance interception of deep outflow fractures, than is the case for wells drilled in a more intensively fractured valley bottom. The lower static water level of wells that intercept deep fractures does not necessarily reflect the water table conditions outside of a small radius around the affected well. The results suggest that permanently isolating well bore outflow fractures may remediate certain open-hole residential wells that have been affected by high extraction underground mining.

INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups: that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh (< 0.60 mm); in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < 8, in. (< 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1 to 2% in. (25 to 63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6X 1/14 in. (150X32 mm). The past decades has shown a steady increase in the tonnage of coal cleaned, 1 but it seems probable that the next decades will produce much wider applica- tion of deep coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. Since different cleaning processes work better with different ranges of coal size and the degree of cleaning possible is intimately connected with the size of coal, a systems design engineer will need as much information as possible concerning the size distributions produced by different types of machines and how these can be modified by different ways of operating the machines. In general, the following questions will be of concern: 1.What type of crusher or grinder is best, or most satisfactory, for reducing a given feed size and type of coal to a desired product size? Frequently, the desired product is smaller than some nominal size, but with as few fines as possible, or the fraction in some size range has to be as high as possible. 2. How big does the machine have to be for a given throughput rate? 3. How much electrical energy (or its equivalent) is required per ton of product? 4. How does the size distribution vary with change in throughput rate, and is a control scheme necessary or desirable? 5. Can the size distribution be readily varied if desired? 6. What is the optimum way to operate a machine in a given system? This section will emphasize certain general principles which guide us in answering these questions. INRTODUCTION Annual coal production rose to over 1.03 billion st (931 Mt) in 1990. At the same time the number of mines producing this increased tonnage has decreased over 60% in a 30-year period, from 9230 mines in 1960.1 The great increase in production made possible through continued mechanization requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get coal away from the mine. Also the trend to combine production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant continues. A recent census of US coal preparation plants indicated that 310 plants were in operation.2 In addition to increased loading capacity, storage and blending facilities are more necessary both at the producer and user end. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit-train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit-train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit-train practice, large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time, as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To load out promptly and economically. 2. To facilitate blending in order to even out chemical and physical inconsistencies and to prepare desired products or to attain maximum product uniformity. 3. To store certain sizes whose prices and market demand fluctuate with seasons and to permit shipping in good weather. Coal storage, then, is necessary and desirable, both from production and utilization standpoints. There are, however, several undesirable aspects attendant to the storage of coal, the most important of which are oxidation and spontaneous combustion, changes in properties which may affect utilization of the coal, degradation of coal due to rehandling, and the added cost of handling and storage facilities.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. The results of studies to ameliorate acid mine drainage by retarding the rate of oxidation of pyrite at source are discussed. In the transpassive region, pyrite oxidizes by reactive dissolution, mass transfer through the product layer and diffusion in the bulk solution. One can decrease the rate of pyrite oxidation by inhibiting either oxidation reactions or cathodic reactions. It is demonstrated in this study that some surface active reagents extend the passive region by affecting both the anodic and cathodic processes. The extension to higher potentials occurs by inhibition of the anodic dissolution process whereas to lower cathodic potentials through decrease in the rate of reduction of molecular oxygen and/or ferric ions. To retard the oxidation of pyrite by ferric ions, which is considered to be the dominant oxidant under conditions of acid mine drainage, it would be necessary to restrict mass transfer or promote complexation of ferric ions at the surface. Imidazoline based reagents were found to be most effective in meeting this goal.

Federally owned mineral deposits generally fall into one of three categories: (1) minerals locatable under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) minerals leasable under the Mineral Leasing kt of 1920; and (3) minerals salable under the Materials Act of 1947. Unlike valuable deposits of gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, etc., which may be locatable, industrial minerals are acquired through a variety of methods depending on use, composition, and date of acquisition. Table 1 may be used to establish the method of acquisition for most industrial minerals.

Important industrial minerals are separated and concentrated by froth flotation by industry today. The following descriptions are presented as an overview of the methods employed to separate and recover a few of these industrial minerals. The minerals described in this section of the book are not, by any means, the only important minerals treated by froth flotation. Other minerals, such as calcite, kaolin, wollastonite, rare earths and vermiculite were not included, primarily due to the confidential nature of the information held by the Minerals Research Laboratory and the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. Flotation of nonmetallic minerals is sometimes viewed as alchemy. However, the art is, in reality, based on sound chemistry, experience and a little luck in the treatment of new ores. In the flotation of nonmetallic minerals, as opposed to base metal sulfides, highly specific treatment conditions are required to accomplish separations. The Phelps Dodge Miami smelter has smelted copper concentrate using the ISASMELT technology since 1992. The design throughput rate was 591,000 tonnes/year and after a slow start-up, the production rate has exceeded the design after the seventh year of operation. In 2002, the smelter consumed 719,000 tonnes of copper concentrate and has the potential to hit the permitted rate of 772,000 tonnes/year. Improvements to the smelting vessel and the surrounding support processes have allowed for continuous improvement from start up until now. This presentation will outline the chronological events and the improvements completed to accomplish these improvements

There is a plethora of former industrial sites where coal mining operations have left large slurry impoundments. These contain raw washed fines, which have previously been too expensive to process to requisite grades for commercial use. New technology has been developed for fine material processing, namely the Imhoflot pneumatic flotation G-Cell. This froth flotation technique is a highly efficient means of concentrating coal and is particularly appropriate to the nature of materials encountered in tailings ponds. The high volumetric throughput resulting from the vastly reduced residence time in the cell allows for drastically reduced equipment sizes when compared to conventional flotation cells. This means the process, when combined with innovative pre treatment and filtration equipment can be developed as a mobile plant concept. This is seen as a minimum requirement when re-treating and rehabilitating fine coal ponds.

Results obtained from conditional simulations and multiple indicator kriging were compared in the assessment of two different mining methods proposed for the extraction of the down-dip extension of a nickel-sulfide ore body located in the Thompson mining camp, Canada. An enhanced turning band simulation algorithm, supplemented with an unfolding technique, was used. A floating stope optimization process was used to effectively compare tonnage and grade figures. A calibration exercise was also conducted in the upper portion of the ore body. This study demonstrates that conditional simulations provide better spatial models for conceptual mine design and capital budgeting decisions.

Many industries when volumes of the solid materials are large invariably relay upon the gravity to induce solids to flow out of storage, through channels and reactors. In mining industry ore pass’s requirements to less energy (only gravity) have made them very popular both in underground and open pit mines. This paper discusses the major findings of research on 2D Discrete Element Method simulation of gravity flow of ore in ore passes. Results show that ore characteristics, ore pass configuration can significantly affect loads (static, dynamic) on the gate assembly and creation of hang-ups.

It is a common observation that objects having, different; temperatures exchange energy by radiative transfer. The quantity of radiant energy emitted by an object is a definite function of its temperature. Therefore, a measurement of emitted radiation, by means of a calibrated radiometric instrument, provides a temperature measurement without contacting the emitting object. The physical laws describing radiant energy transfer and their application to remote temperature measurement form the substance of this paper. The energy radiated by bodies having temperatures up to 4000°C is largely in the infrared spectral region. The infrared spectral region is that part of the electro-magnetic spectrum having wavelengths longer than visible light and extending to the microwave region. The wave-lengths range from 0.7 micron (1 micron = 10-4 cm) to 1000 microns. In general, infrared radiometry deals, with the methods of measuring energy flux in the 1 to 15 micron region of the infrared spectrum.

The NMBGMR is slowly converting historical data into a relational database using Microsoft Access 97. The purpose of this database is to provide data on districts, mines, and mills in New Mexico to government agencies, public organizations, industry, and citizens to make informed decisions about resource development, resource management, water supplies, environmental impacts, hazard assessment, and waste disposal. Once the data are entered into the database with locations, the data can easily be converted to GIS format for displaying as different map layers.

In a longwall section that consisted of 7 longwall panels, there were two high pressure gas transmission pipelines across the panels burying from 3 to 10 ft. below the surface. One pipeline was 20 in. in diameter while the other was 24 in. in diameter. In order to investigate the stress conditions sustained by the pipelines during underground longwall mining, strain gages were mounted on the pipelines above panel #3, #4, and #5. Survey monuments were also installed along but near the pipelines. This paper presents a subsidence prediction method and the preliminary results of the pipelines&apos; stress conditions as affected by underground longwall mining.

In 1996, Rio Algom, Denison Mines and the Elliot Lake Research Field Station (ELRFS) formed a consortium to implement a regional environmental information management system (REIMS) for the Elliot Lake area in Ontario, Canada. ELRFS is an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, The discovery of uranium in the Elliot Lake region in post-World War II led to the development of 12 mines and 11 associated mills between 1955 and 1958. During the late 1980s, declining world demand for uranium, combined with the discovery of high-grade uranium ore in other areas of the world, made the Elliot Lake mines uneconomical. As a result, all area mines ceased opera¬tions by the end of 1996. The eight facilities and three tailings management areas operated by Denison Mines and Rio Algom&apos;s five mining waste management areas contain 150 Mt (165 million st) of potentially acid-generating tailings. The areas cover 13.2 km2 (3,265 acres) and receive drainage from an additional 13 km2 (3,212 acres). The primary objective of the joint initiative was to implement a personal-computer-based, regional, environmental-information management system for managing historical data and ongoing environmental programs in the Elliot Lake region. The Elliot Lake consortium decided it needed an information system with an integrated, process-oriented and requirements-driven approach to collect and manage the environmental information. Following a study of environmental information management systems currently used by the mining industry, the consortium decided to base REIMS on the "Envista" product. This is a commercially available, environmental information management system marketed by Envista Technologies of Saskatoon, Canada.
