The heavy media process is now being used extensively throughout the world for the gravity concentration of a great number of different minerals. The process is a commercial adaptation of the heavy liquid procedure which has been used in laboratories for many years to separate mineral of different specific gravities. In the heavy media process, a suspension of finely divided particles in water is used to increase the apparent specific weight of the fluid to the desired separating point. The original heavy media process used sand, galena, pyrite and occasionally other materials as the solid constituent of the separating suspensions. As the process developed, the need for a more universal media meeting the following requirements was recognized: 1. High specific gravity. 2. Resistance to abrasion. 3. Resistance to corrosion, 4. Readily reduced to a suitable size consist for suspension in water. 5. Available in quantity at economical price levels. 6. Easy to recover by a simple method.

In a recently developed long term open pit production planning model, the optimum plan is found by exhaustively searching through nested pits of maximum-metal contents. A more efficient, dynamic programming (DP) based search algorithm now replaces the exhaustive search algorithm which was requiring prohibitively long execution time in real life cases. The logic and the formulation of the newly developed search algorithm are illustrated through a small hypothetical case. A real life gold deposit is treated to demonstrate that the algorithm does indeed find the optimum production plan among all possible plans. A comparison, in terms of computational savings between the two algorithms is also given.

INTRODUCTION The passage of Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA/Superfund) as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and state laws, have placed added regulatory pressures on the mining industry. These laws which focus on the regulation of hazardous substances and wastes for the protection of the public health and welfare and the environment, present the potential for tremendous financial impacts and liabilities on existing mine operators and owners and/or potential mine operators/owners. This paper takes a brief look at these laws and presents an environmental audit procedure to identify environmental liabilities prior to mine land transactions. The environmental audit approach presented is an overview of the procedures that could be used to document, evaluate and inventory existing and/or potential environmental concerns. This audit procedure can be applied to developed or undeveloped properties and at active or inactive mining sites. REGULATORY OVERVIEW Mining environmental liabilities have been addressed in RCRA, Superfund, the Clean Air Act (CAA) and the Clean Water Act (CWA). Even though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that mining wastes will be treated as solid wastes under RCRA and not as hazardous wastes, these wastes could still bring about a great deal of financial liability under Superfund. The catch is if the mine wastes generated contain hazardous substances such as the heavy metals arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, zinc and others as well as cyanide. Thus, it is not only important for a mine operator/owner or a potential mine operator/owner to know if the mine wastes generated are hazardous, but it is important to know if the wastes contain hazardous substances. Following is a brief overview of RCRA and Superfund and their potential implications. RCRA RCRA, which provides the basis for the regulation of solid and hazardous wastes, is applicable to active mining and milling sites. Within RCRA the definition of a hazardous waste is provided. This definition applies to owners and operators of mining and milling sites if the operator has stored, disposed or treated hazardous wastes on-site. If this is the case and if strict process control and waste management activities are not adhered to, environmental liabilities may be associated with the site. Superfund The 1980 Superfund law can be applicable to inactive mining sites or to inactive sections of an active facility. The provisions of Superfund call for the regulation of hazardous wastes and hazardous sub- stances disposal and release not only by the existing owner, but also for any previous owner. This concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of hazardous waste cleanup (Haller, 1987). Furthermore, liabilities under Superfund have also been applied back to past acts; thus, several mining properties, active or inactive prior to the 1980 Superfund law, are at risk of being placed on the EPA's National Priority List (NPL) for cleanup. Last years amendments to Superfund, known as the Superfund Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), provided some significant developments for the mining industry. The major requirement of the amendments as it pertains to owners or operators of mining sites is that the EPA must revise its present Hazard Ranking System (HRS). This is important be- cause in most cases the primary reason for several mining sites having been included on the NPL was due to the large volume of wastes generated. As is typical at most mining sites, large volumes of low toxicity wastes are generated and the current HRS model prejudices against this. It should be noted that this provision only applies to sites that are not already on the NPL or have not been proposed for inclusion on the list.

This morning, gentlemen, I should like to discuss resin anchors of a type introduced to North America approximately 2-1/2 years ago. We shall also briefly review the basics of mechanically anchored rockbolts so that a general comparison may be made. Previous efforts with synthetic resins were aimed at aiding a mechanical Or "point" anchor, obtain a better purchase in the rock mass. Resin cartridges of the type to be described in this paper are capable of achieving point anchorage or full encapsulation of mine roof or rockbolts. Of significance, therefore, is that unlike a mechanical bolt, placed and tensioned, celtite rockbolts may be fully grouted and tensioned or left untensioned in the installation sequence. Our principle effort has been to offer this system to mining and civil engineers who have encountered difficult rock conditions and wish to reinforce strata to achieve a greater degree of permanence and safety.

The Los Bronces porphyry copper deposit is located in the high Andes of Central Chile. Ore is mined from several tourmaline breccias and from an earlier porphyry. After years of experience in the geostatistical estimation of reserves in different zones of the ore body, we believe that success lies in considering the evaluation as an integrated process beginning with the analyses of the drilling density and sampling methodology, ending with the critically important reconciliation between the estimated and the actually extracted ore, in general, when errors or differences occur, focus is centered in the calculation stages of geostatistics. However, this paper demonstrates that all the evaluation stages are equally important and require the direct and continuous geologic input to ensure the best possible estimate within the frame of the geologic constraints.

Ball mill grinding circuits can be subject to upsets that arise from variable characteristics of the feed ore. These upsets are transients in critical circuit variables such as ball mill mass holdup, circulating load, sump level, cyclone efficiency and product particle size. They may occur frequently so that the operation is continuously fluctuating or they may be of such magnitude that some of the equipment is overloaded, resulting in shutdown, or an undesirable product particle size. The feed ore characteristics that influence ball mill circuit behavior in this manner include the grindability of the ore, the eventual transport characteristics of the ore in the mills and the feed ore size distribution. Control strategies for grinding circuits using conventional proportional-integral (PI) control have limitations to their effectiveness in controlling against feed ore disturbances. The first of these are the interactive nature of two or more control loops on a single circuit. Under some circumstances they begin to fight each other, increasing control error and settling time. PI control loop gain constants can be tuned to give best response for some set of conditions but once these change, as they would with a change in the feed ore, they are no longer the "best" ones (Shinsky, 1967). Due to these limitations, alternatives to conventional PI control strategies have been investigated for grinding as well as other mineral processing operations. These alternatives, all computer-based, include self tuning regulators, decoupling control and optimal control (Herbst and Bascur, 1983).

The effects of induced seismicity caused by mining activities are one of the main problems that the mining industry faces. Although it has been documented by countries with a great mining tradition (United States, Canada, Australia and Chile) for over a century, the problem has been intensified throughout the years due to the greater depths that mineral extraction reaches, where the stress levels and environmental conditions increase the possibility of a rockburst occurrence. Seismic events inside the mine cause important losses of human lives and infrastructure damage. To deal with this problem it is necessary to implement several kinds of safety protocols. For example, seismic indicators allow to identify, through the analysis of a set of seismic parameters -magnitude, energy, time, decay rate, among others-, periods of time when a seismic event of considerable magnitude is most likely to occur. The objective of this work is to use the frictional energy generated by a microearthquake inside the mine as a seismic indicator, linking it with the occurrence of large magnitude seismic events which are outer the background activity. Thus, we seek to determine the set of seismic parameters which allow the best performance of the frictional energy/heat indicator. In the present study, we considered magnitude, frictional energy, and time as seismic parameters to study the efficiency of the proposed indicator. The optimal set of parameters was determined using two different methodologies: accumulated thermal energy and alert bands. The Piece Skill Score and the Accuracy indexes were used to evaluate each set of parameters. Both approaches show a high rate of true positive and true negative hits. Furthermore, it was concluded that both methods show complementary results in terms of the detection of critical events (Mw > 3.0).

Have you, for example, ever wondered where the raw material for those distinctive greenish grey statuettes, so readily recognizable as Eskimo carvings, comes from? Although stone suitable for carving is obtained at several northern locations, in recent years the Federal government, the Quebec government, and one or two private companies have shipped supplies of various rock types from other sources to central distribution points in the Canadian north for the express purpose of providing Eskimo artists with raw materials for carving. As part of a program to address long-term needs for ensuring adequate supplies of domestic phosphate raw materials, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has conducted considerable research on dolomitic phosphate rock beneficiation. The discovery that alkyl diphosphonic acids act as phosphate mineral depressants led to the development of several processes involving a carbonate flotation step for the effective beneficiation of these problem ores. Most recently, a partial de-oiling process in which the reagent consumption is greatly reduced has been developed. The reduction is achieved because part of the initial feed is beneficiated without passing through the separate carbonate flotation step. Using this method, a phosphate product containing 30.6-30.9% P2O5 and 0.7-0.8% MgO was obtained from a Florida dolomitic phosphate pebble which contained about 23% P2O5 and 2.0% MgO. The P2O5 recovery was 80.8-86.5%.

Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. There is no known, practical substitute for lead in the automobiles, communications systems, medical equipment and computers that Americans use every day. However, there are many who say lead should be stopped at its source -- banned. As America's largest lead producer, The Doe Run Company has ralized that it must do more than mine and reclaim lead efficiently and safely. It must also earn the public's consent to operate if it is to continue to be a viable business. LEAD - THE BRILLIANT PERFORMER: REFURBISHING AN IMAGE It's been an embarrassingly long time since I was a college student. However, I remember there was no course at the University of Missouri's School of Mines and Metallurgy that had anything to do with the public relations aspects of mining or, put another way, the politicization of mining. I haven’t perused the course catalog for Penn State’s College of Earth and Minerals Sciences. But I strongly suspect I wouldn’t find such a course there today, either. A statement by the chairman of one of the country’s largest chemical companies leads to the point I want to make. He described his business this way. He said, “We’re a public affairs company that just happens to produce and market chemicals.” Like chemicals, minerals and mining are politicized today. To the extent that we don’t understand that reality, we don’t understand that reality – and act on it – we’re less likely to survive in this business. Some of you may well be saying to yourselves, “This guy Zelms is an alarmist.” That’s fair enough. Because it is absolutely true that there’s n o known, practical substitute for lead today. And it’s also absolutely true that, knowingly or not, Americans use lead everyday. It’s in our automobile batteries. It’s an integral part of communications systems. High tech (and low tech) medical equipment contains lead. And lead is an essential component of computer and TV screens. But even with all these uses, lead has a negative image today. An image so negative that its very existence is threatened. If you doubt that, consider these two statements made in 1989. Statement one. “It is probably reasonable to argue that exposure is the single most important and critical environmental health problem in the U.S., and possibly also the world…” Statement number two. “Many of the uses of lead should be terminated. We need to go back to the ultimate source: that is, taking lead out of the ground and putting it into the product stream and we need to turn it off at the ultimate source. Not the approximate lead in gasoline, or lead in air, or lead in food. Go right back to the source and start cranking it down." (End quote.) Those are what I call strong statements. And they weren’t made by some celebrity spokesperson for the environment like Meryl Streep. Both these statements were made by Dr. Ellen Silbergeld, whose long list of professional and academic credentials includes: o Adjunct professor and research scientist at the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins: o Chief toxic scientist and director of the Toxic Chemicals Program of the Environmental Defense fund; o and President of the Society for Occupational and Environmental Health. If Dr. Silbergeld were the only person making these kinds of statements, it would be one thing. But she’s not a voice in the wilderness, by any means. Also for those of you who say, well since there’s no known substitute for lead, how on earth could it be banned. I refer you to a number of bills before Congress that would permit the EPA to ban any product if it is determined that its

During the last few years there has been a rapid increase in the development of the community or junior college throughout the United States, Some factors behind this development include the need for more college facilities to service the growing number of high school graduates, the desire of the public to provide some post high school education at reasonable costs, and the need to provide post high school educational opportunities not now provided by most of the universities and colleges. Many of the new community colleges provide at least three educational services including local opportunity to provide the first two years of a four year college program, two year technical-vocational programs of a terminal nature, and adult educational opportunities. The community college has the advantage of not being saddled with years of academic tradition which prevent it from changing to suit the educational needs of the community It serves. The flexibility of the community college in developing new programs, particularly in the technical areas, is going to provide industry with many of the badly needed technicians it is now unable to secure.

Good morning, it is truly an honor to have been invited to speak before you today Before I begin my update on MSHA's activities, I?d Like t o quickly say a few words about the American mining congress and its mission in Washington, AMC is a national trade association representing most of the producers of the nation's metals, nonmetals and coal, we also represent the manufacturers of mining equipment and supplies and the financial and consulting institutions which service the mining industry. It is the diversity of our representation which gives us our greatest strength in our petitioning efforts, the administration and the members of congress know that an AMC position is the result of the careful consideration of a vastly diverse group of mining concerns. Our president, Al Overton, perhaps has the best description of AMC when he speaks of us as "the mining industry's eyes and ears and its collective voice in Washington."

Interpretation of presently available geological information indicates that most of the periods of significant metal deposition in the Washington Cascades Range are, at least in part, genetically related to late Cretaceous -Tertiary intrusive episodes. Chemically, the most favorable environment for base metal deposition is high in potassium. Characterizing the advanced stages of these chemical alteration conditions are the silicate mineral assemblages orthoclase and/or secondary biotite. Wall rock alteration includes both deuteric and hydrothermal processes, the intensity of which primarily depends upon the degree of fracturing in the country rock prior to the introduction of secondary material. Broadly speaking, the primary physical controls for the distribution and concentration of sulfides appear to be a series of structural couples involving both northwest (paralleling regional trends) and northeast--striking systems. Meaningful base metal exploration in the Washington Cascades demands a basic understanding of the various geologic factors related to the distribution of the sulfide deposits. Any geologist contemplating Cascade work should be well grounded in the fundamental concepts of petrology and structure.as these constitute two of his most beneficial aids. The acquisition of the detailed data necessary for this understanding may seem a bit academic, yet it has been demonstrated in numerous instances that a fair economic appraisal of a particular property or mining district depends primarily upon the ability of the geologist to recognize the subtle environmental differences which could lead to the discovery of a major ore deposit.

A two level risk analysis procedure which is specially designed for use in river environments, is presented. The first level risk assessment (Level I) is often adequate for purposes of most projects, and entails hazard assessment, exposure identification, consequence estimation, and risk characterization. Two unique features of the method are the Composite Hazard Rating system, which is used in hazard assessment, and a formalized decision model for risk characterization. The risk characterization procedure provides information on the acceptability of risks, can be used to distinguish between the relative severity of risks, and to evaluate whether more advanced risk assessment would be required.

The term olivine was first used in 1790 by J. Werner, and the corresponding mineral was so named because of its olive-green color (Hunter, 1941). Olivine is the principal component of the rock known as dunite. While by classic definition dunite is composed of 90% or more olivine, commercial use of these terms has resulted in more specific definitions. Commercially, the term olivine is used to designate a material that consists of 85% or more forsterite and contains 45 to 50% MgO, 39 to 42% SiO2, 5 to 8% Fe2O3, and has an ignition loss (LOI) of 1 to 2%. The term dunite designates a rock that contains 36 to 45% MgO, 36 to 39% SiO2, and has an ignition loss of as much as 10% (Teague, 1983). GEOLOGY Olivine is found in basic igneous and basic metamorphic rocks whose age varies from pre-Ordovician to Tertiary. Economic deposits are of magmatic origin and are restricted to the dunite variety of the peridotite group of ultrabasic igneous rocks. Olivine also occurs in basic igneous rocks such as gabbro, basalt, and diabase and more rarely as an accessory mineral in granite and metamorphosed crystalline limestones. Mineralogy The term olivine refers to a group of orthosilicate minerals in isomorphous series with magnesium-rich forsterite (Mg2Si04) as one end member and iron-rich fayalite (Fe,SiO,) as the other. In most olivines the ratio of magnesium to iron varies from 16: 1 to 2: 1. Commercial olivine deposits contain a mixture of forsterite and fayalite with the fayalite content restricted to less than 15% (Reed, 1959; Teague, 1983). Accessory constituents may include primary minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, diopside, chromite, and garnet and secondary minerals such as chlorite, serpentine, talc, and vermiculite as alteration products. Chemical and Physical Properties The chemical composition of olivine can be expressed as either (Mg, Fe), SiO, or 2(Mg, Fe)O.SiO,. Table 1 presents chemical analyses for some commercial olivines. The physical properties of olivine are shown in Table 2. Distribution of Major Deposits Commercial olivine and dunite deposits are found in Norway, Japan, Spain, India, Italy, the United States, Sweden, Austria, Pakistan, and Mexico. Noncommercial deposits have been reported in New Zealand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, New Caledonia, Greece, Brazil, and Canada (Teague, 1983). The present markets for olivine are characterized by low unit value, high volume, and high sensitivity to freight costs, so few deposits are commercially viable. Literature from the USSR indicates that considerable research on olivine refractories is being done. (Afansa'ev, 1988), lending credibility to the conjecture that commercial deposits are being mined there. In eastern Canada synthetic olivine is being produced by calcining chrysotile asbestos mine tailings. In the United States numerous lenses of olivine extend in a belt from northeast Georgia northeastward across western North Carolina. Total reserves in North Carolina and Georgia are estimated at between 125 and 200 Mt. The largest US deposit is Twin Sisters Mountain, located in Whatcom and Skagit Counties in the state of Washington. This deposit, which has an outcrop area of 93 km2 and a relief of about 1 525 m. is estimated to contain 1 800 Mt of fresh, unaltered olivine (Teague, 1983). In addition, the US Bureau of Mines reports reserves of 50 Mt on Cypress Island in the state of Washington, and the literature reports eight complexes in southeastern Alaska, some containing cores of olivine as large as 1.6 km in diameter (Taylor, Jr., 1967). The world's largest deposit of olivine occurs in the Aaheim area of Norway, where reserves are estimated at a 2 000 Mt. Several other Norwegian deposits contain as much as 5 Mt each. In Japan the production of ultrabasic rocks is currently about 6 Mtpy, but the bulk of this output is serpentinite. Olivineldunite accounts for only 17% of this production. The major olivine deposit in Japan is located at Horoman Hill on the northern island of Hokkaido. Reserves at this deposit are estimated at 100 Mt (Anon., 1990). Spain is one of the largest producers of dunite. Reserves in the La Coruna District in northwestern Spain are estimated at 100 Mt. India, also a major dunite producer, has a large deposit at Salem in Tamil Nadu. In Italy olivine/dunite is mined from a deposit near Turin. In Sweden the largest deposit is at Arutats and is reported to be comparable in size to the Twin Sisters deposit in the United States. At present the only production in Sweden is from a deposit 30 km south of the town of Gallivare. Reserves at this deposit are reported to be between 1 and 2 Mt. Other significant deposits are: 1) in Austria at St. Stefan near Leoben, 2) in the Swat District of the North West Frontier Province in Pakistan, and 3) in Mexico at Cuidad Victoria in Tamaulipas (Anon., 1990).

It is generally accepted, that oxygen is a necessary reagent for the flotation of galena with xanthate. Recent measurements have shown (1) that under plant conditions oxygen may be in a short supply to the extent that it limits the rate of flotation. Thus, it becomes important to define the exact role of oxygen and establish a model for the rational design and control of flotation separations, involving oxygen as a reagent. All theories or, the flotation of galena assign oxygen the role of an oxidant. However, they disagree on a number of questions: 1) Is the galena or the xanthate being oxidized? 2) Is a lead dixanthate or dixanthogen the actual collector? 3) Is the oxidation process in which oxygen participates of a chemical or an electrochemical nature? The last question arises from the observation (2) that an anodic bias as well as oxygen will make a galena surface hydrophobic in the presence of xanthate. Theories which are based an the premise that the influence of oxygen is of an electrochemical nature offer elegant models of galena flotation. However, full advantage has not been taken of available electrochemical techniques to discriminate between theories and this is the area towards which this research has been directed (3).

Union Carbide_ began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.040% U308 were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leach project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on-site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. They were most generous in allowing us to visit their site, answering our questions, and were helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. They confirmed our belief that, it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for. conventional milling. Based largely on what we had learned from Western Nuclear's experience, a program was set up involving a laboratory study to determine the characteristics of the mineral stockpiles as related to heap leaching and to conduct a pilot heap leach adjoining our Gas Hills mill. Basically, the pilot heap construction and leach procedure were similar to those described in the literature(1,2) with certain modifications to permit detailed monitoring of the operation. In May, '1972, the decision was made to construct a test heap. The UCC plant at Gas Hills, Wyoming was selected as the most appropriate site for the follow¬ing reasons:

The natural hydrophobic response flotation method for beneficiation of printed circuit board comminution fines (PCB CF) still requires many studies to further basic understanding of the process and the flotation traits that the PCB CF presents. Varying particle size distribution (PSD) and water recovery under the scheme show that higher mass pull, obtained at the finer PSD, gave lower water recovery but higher value loss. The reverse also holds: the least mass pull at the coarsest PSD used, -106 + 75 µm, gave the highest water recovery per unit mass pull with the highest reverse recovery. This is unlike what obtains in primary resources processing, where higher water recovery is often with increased fines entrainment. The reverse recovery loss here is, therefore, more due to entrapment with the heavy mass pull characteristic of the method than to the entrainment of value with water. Other peculiarities of the system observed are discussed, with the goal of improving the performance of the process, and broadening the general knowledge of flotation systems.
