In recent years, miners have tried many approaches to maintenance such as: - Highly sophisticated computerized programs. - large planning groups designed to preplan and schedule work. - Contract maintenance. - Break down maintenance. Each of these approaches has faced the added constraints: - High replacement cost of equipment necessitating longer useful equipment life - management?s increased scrutiny of all indirect costs such as maintenance. Faced with these factors, what system of maintenance control is right? After visiting many properties recently, it appears there is no right system. Maintenance programs need to be tailored to the people and production constraints that occur at an individual property.

Experiments have been carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064 m x l.5 m bubble column equipped with a Mott porous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and air flow rate are presented and discussed.

The trend to higher solids paper coating and to neutral/alkaline papermaking is causing an above average growth in the use of calcium carbonate as both a paper coating and a paper filling pigment. These developments are expected to continue well into the 1990s. Thus, calcium carbonate will account for a somewhat larger percentage of total paper pigment volume. Nevertheless, overall growth in paper tonnage coupled with an increase in filler pigment percentages will create a demand for larger quantities of other pigments as well. Kaolin will continue to be the dominant paper pigment by far, with continued growth though at a somewhat slower rate than calcium carbonate.

The isotopic variations of lead from Mississippi Valley galenas have long been used to place constraints on the sources of the lead, and on the residence the of the lead in crustal reservoirs prior to its emplacement in the Mississippi Valley province. Similar studies based on strontium isotope variations in gangue minerals associated with the lead-zinc sulphides have been neglected until Haden's (1) study of such minerals from several localities in northwestern Ohio. His work revealed two things about the mineralization. Firstly, it shoved that the average isotope composition of lead from galenas from northwestern Ohio lies on the anamalous lead line characterizing Mississippi Valley-type leads, albeit at the least radiogenic end of the entire data array. This confirm earlier assignments of the Ohio mineralization as Mississippi Valley-type (Hey1 and others (2)). Secondly, Haden (I) showed that the strontium in the calcite, strontianite and fluorite is broadly similar in isotopic composition to the strontium in the host Silurian to Devonian marine carbonates within which these minerals arc emplaced. He concluded that the mineral strontium my have been very locally derived, from the carbonate hosts.

A test of a solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant featuring electrostatic coalescence has been performed by C-E Natco at the United Nuclear uranium mill in Church Rock, New Mexico. Operating in parallel with the United Nuclear SX system, the C-E Natco electrostatic SX pilot plant exhibited comparable extraction efficiency to the United Nuclear system which utilizes conventional mixer-settlers. The C-E Natco pilot, however, operated at much higher liquid loading rates and exhibited less communication between the aqueous phases of the extraction and stripping circuits.

The design of an underground opening involves the coincidence of two highly complex and poorly specified components. First, the structural or mechanical characteristics of a geologic rock mass are not only extremely variable but are also very difficult to evaluate. Second, the general lay¬out of mine workings contains a large degree of indeterminancy as to the structure itself as a result of the indefiniteness of the mining process, and also because of the inherent redundancies associated with bulky and weighty structures. Even for the relatively simple problem of tunneling this complexity is well recognized to be "without question that to which the study of geo¬logy (for the Engineer) can most fitly and usefully be applied".1 It can, therefore, be appreciated that the comprehensive opening design problem involves a complicated assemblage of component structures made up of a sketchily defined, or sometimes even an undefined material and acted upon by largely unknown tectonic forces.

The Oakfield, New York Hine of the United States Gypsum Company is a shallow, room and pillar mine developed in the Camillus Formation of Silurian Age on the up-dip edge of the northern Appalachian Basin. The gypsum comes to subcrop beneath a variety of glacial materials and is subject to solution activity by groundwater. A geologic environment unfavorable to mining activity is thus created. Since 1978 seismic studies have been used to supplement core drilling to determine a conservative boundary between normal and questionable mining environments. A single channel seismograph, originally in use, is now replaced by a twelve-channel unit and is used to determine bulk material velocity which is the basis for defining the mining limit.

Millions of years ago, in late Cretaceous time before man existed on Earth, tremendous orogenic forces began to change the face of the western part of the North American Continent. Catastrophic events marked by huge uplifts of thousands of square miles in the Cordilleran Belt, some of which are barely discernible in the geologic record, were accompanied by long periods of batholithic intrusions and volcanic eruptions. These events produced the great Rocky Mountain systems, which were at the time even higher and more rugged than they are today. Such activity continued into Tertiary time, and during the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods millions of tons of volcanic ash were hurled skyward by explosive volcanic activity and carried by the westerly winds to the east where it settled out of the atmosphere and deposited over thousands of square miles of the high plains. Unusually heavy rains, probably caused in part by the volcanic activity itself, together with high winds, reworked and redeposited the freshly fallen ash into lakes and depressions of varying sizes and shapes. Subsequent deposits of sand, gravel and loess covered the deposits of volcanic ash, preserving them in the condition in which they are found today. In many places erosion has cut through the sand, gravel, loess, and volcanic ash so that in favorable localities on hillsides and gullies, exposures of volcanic ash can be seen interbedded with sand and gravel.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shortwall mining is one of the newest mining meth¬ods to be introduced into the world coal industry. The technique of shortwalling seems to have a number of origins, but it is generally agreed that it is an outgrowth of pillar-and-stall mining where timbering was employed as the primary means of roof support. In early opera¬tions the face was undercut by a shortwall cutter, hand¬bored, and blasted. The coal was loaded by hand or gathering arm loader. Australia, having experienced success with this method, advanced the technique through the use of mechanized roof supports in 1968. Although there were several attempts at shortwalling in the US, it was not until 1973 that Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Federal No. 1 mine successfully extracted a shortwall panel. Table 1 is a list of shortwall opera¬tions in the US as of April 1976. Shortwall mining is a method of mining in which a continuous miner cuts and loads from the short end of a rectangular pillar of coal while hydraulically powered self-advancing roof supports provide protective cover. Characteristics of a shortwall system include panel di¬mensions (Fig. 1) of 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) in length, face widths of 30 to 61 m (100 to 200 ft), straight-line ventilation, and production machinery, with the exception of roof supports, commonly used on con¬tinuous miner units. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS The justification for shortwalling is primarily eco¬nomic, i.e., increased production and recovery concur¬rent with savings in material and labor. The method also has a number of secondary benefits including the much needed progress it has stimulated in deep mine technology, the alternatives it presents to some of the problems resulting from the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and is perhaps a key to the solution of the enigmatic labor problems which plague the industry. The advantages of shortwall mining over continuous miner units include the following: a highly effective method of ventilation and dust control; a greater per¬centage of extraction (approximately 85%) ; fewer equipment moves, hence more efficient operating time; cost savings on materials such as roof bolts, rock dust, ventilation curtains, timbering materials, and the labor needed to supply, load, and transport these materials; a cyclical pattern of mining, each phase of which, i.e., development and retreat, lasts for approximately three months and appears to be psychologically motivating as well as highly productive; and improved safety. In addition to these positive aspects, a shortwall sys¬tem also has advantages over a longwall system, and these are listed as follows: the capital outlay for a shortwall system is one-third to one-fourth that for a longwall (1976 prices); the shortwall system utilizes equipment that is used on a continuous miner section, with the ex¬ception of the roof support system; there is a great deal of flexibility in areas with numerous gas wells and in areas where surface subsidence cannot be tolerated; the shortwall has reduced tailgate problems, since the tail¬gate entry serves as a return airway only; and the cyclical pattern of mining insures that the mining machinery pro¬duces coal even while the roof support system is being moved to another panel. There are several parameters which govern the se¬lection and use of a shortwall system. They are all of equal importance, and hence are not listed in any par¬ticular order. These are deposit size, seam height, seam inclination, roof and floor conditions, depth of over¬burden, subsidence and chain pillar extraction, man¬power, ventilation, and materials handling. Deposit Size Reserves available for shortwalling should be suffi¬cient for at least an eight to ten-year period, since this seems to be the effective life, without rebuilding, of a hydraulic roof support under average conditions. "INTRODUCTIONIn view of a global trend towards urbanization, more and more trunk sewers and combined sewer overflow tunnels (CSO) with medium to large diameters and the corresponding link sewers are currently built and under design. Shielded tunnel boring machines using segmental lining as tunnel support represent an efficient solution for construction of new wastewater and supply tunnels. Especially in the field of sewers, the durability of concrete structures both exposed to any groundwater present on its exterior and to aggressive waste water as well as gases on its interior is a key requirement. Despite thorough research on segmental lining and mechanized tunneling machinery, conventional thermoplastic liners show comparatively minimal progress in terms of practical advancements. This is in contrast with the development of the latest segment embedded high density polyethylene (HDPE) system. Based on experiences achieved, this paper discusses the latest development of an integral protective lining system in respect of material characteristics and its adaptability to both project and customers’ demands. Reviewed performances, as the bondage behavior of the embedded HDPE system at axial stress loads due to acting thrust cylinders during ring build as well as the ability to drain pressurized water behind the embedded membrane, tested at full scale segments, are also presented. The paper is round off by presenting first details of sewer projects endeavoring to utilize this cutting-edge solution for an integral concrete protection, which will be commenced beginning of 2016.CASE HISTORIES ENCOURAGE ADVANCEMENTS Past experience has shown that unprotected concrete surfaces as well as chemical based linings such as coatings, sprayed linings and cured in-place-systems cannot reach the desired life times. Also the fact that in deep tunnel sewer system hardly maintenance is possible, a durable and maintenance free system is required which only can be reached by applying mechanical anchored HDPE (CPL)."

Wet bituminous coal fines from active and abandoned slurry impoundments are currently being examined as a recoverable feedstock for the production of coal water slurry fuel (CWSF). Preliminary analysis indicates that these coal fines can be converted into low solids, low viscosity CWSF with acceptable stability without the use of viscosity modifiers (dispersants) or stabilizers. Efforts are now underway to determine if the impounded coal fines can be economically cleaned by froth flotation to an ash level of < 12 wt. % and a total sulfur content of 1.2 wt. %.

If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation&apos;s principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government&apos;s "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

Many existing tunnels have deteriorated as they age, requiring a massive amount of investment for their rehabilitation. The tunnel of interest in this paper is being rehabilitated by adding precast concrete arch panels under the existing concrete ceiling, and measuring the gap between them was the objective of this research. For this purpose, a mobile 3D laser/thermal scanner was used for scanning the tunnel, especially for the purpose of measuring its profile. To calculate the gap, the distance between the tunnel profile and the theoretical profile of the concrete arches was measured. Additionally, an in-house program was developed using MATLAB to automate the data processing to determine the above-referenced gaps. Results were provided in the form of heat maps showing the measured gap.

The sand dunes which line the east shore of Lake Michigan resulted after the last, or Wisconsin, glacial period in Michigan. Melt-water streams carried vast quantities of glacial debris to the near shore areas of predecessors to Lake Michigan. As the lake levels receded, these vast quantities of sand were exposed to the prevailing westerly winds, which was the last major process that acted upon the sand and resulted in the formation of the dunes. 1 These dunes are one of the significant natural resources within the state. Michigan dune sands supply about 90% of the foundry sand used in the automotive industry, and 40% of the foundry sand used 2 for all purposes within the United States. The deposits owe their importance to the following factors: grain size distribution, grain shape, mineral composition and location with respect to the foundry sand market. In spite of their economic significance these I deposits are in jeopardy through legislative preemption.

Investigation or analysis of a process or system has as references the measurements of the variables. These measurements are presented normally in form of data. These data are measured in intervals over time. The aim with measurement of the data in a process is to obtain information about the state of it in order to have it under control. Other goal is to know how the results are affected by the process variables to improve upon product quality, redunding manufacturing cost, better pollution control etc.

The ever increasing costs of labor and supplies have made it imperative that operators of open pits look for some way in which to cope with these increases. One of the most logical ways to increase the efficiency of an operation is by the introduction of larger haulage equipment, as generally haulage costs are the greater portion of the over all expenses. These larger haulage units require larger shovel units. In the late 1930&apos;s and the early 1940&apos;s large mining, quarrying and heavy construction operations had more or less standardized on the 4 to 6 cubic yard shovels. During this same period the haulage units were generally 22 to 27 tons. Some ten years ago 9 - 13 cubic yard shovels along with plus 50 ton haulage units were introduced by manufacturers in an effort to enable operators to decrease costs.

Miami Copper Company has used conveyor belts underground since 1947, At that time, the draw level for a portion of the orebody was only 25 feet above the haulage level To get the main haulage drifts as far away as practical from under the stoping area, 301, belt conveyors were used for lateral transfer, If the haulage drift was kept in good ground., a satisfactory draw of these stopes could be effected in that repairs to the conveyor drifts could be accomplished while drawing ore from the stopes. Some 7,400,000 tons of ore were mined with the 301d belt conveyor at a belt cost of approximately $0,004 per ton of ore. When the mining plan for a new section of the mine was laid. out in 1953, it was decided to use belts to collect the ore from the higher draw levels, and. move the ore laterally to centrally located concrete ore passes for transfer to the main haulage level (See Cut #1), The final plans used belt conveyors too collect from 3 stopes: on the 570 level, 2 stopes on the 720 level, and one stope on the 900 level. The six stopes to be mined in this manner would produce about 8 million tons of ore, and the sequence of mining was such that not more than four 400 feet conveyors would be in use at one time, Four conveyors using 36 inch, 4 ply belting were designed by the mine engineering office and fabricated at the mine shop, so that no piece was longer than 10 feet, and. the heaviest piece was the 25 horsepower motor, The head drive section, and the tail-pulley-takeup section were of bolted construction so they could be broken down for easing moving, Due to the size of the mine openings, the belt had to be transported into the mine in 400 feet rolls, requiring two splices for an installed belt. A torque arm speed reducer was used with a V -belt drive which made it possible to change the speed of the conveyor by changing the diameter of the V-belt pulley (See Cut #2).

[One of the earliest records of pillar removal can be found in the 16th Chapter of Judges in the Old Testament. Here we read where the mighty Sampson removed the pillars from beneath the prison house causing the collapse of the structure resulting in his own death along with the deaths of the 3,000 Philistine occupants. Our problems at the Mi Vida Mine differ somewhat from those of Sampson of old, in that it is our aim first to remove the pillars and get out from under the back before the "house falls in" and, secondly, to remove the pillars without the lose of a single life or without even a single casualty. As of January 15, 1959, the Mi Vida accident record stood at 772 days without a lost-time accident]

The scale-dependent hydraulic properties in a fractured porphyry copper oxide deposit are investigated for relevance to in situ leach mine (ISLM) design. In most well field designs, mine operators assume that hydraulic properties represent a continuous spatial function, or continuum. The problem, however, is that the representative elemental volume, the volume over which hydraulic properties are described as a continuum, is a domain (if it exists) that occurs between end members representing varying degrees of heterogeneity. At the Cyprus Cas a Grande mine, transmissivity fluctuations are spatially correlated suggesting that at the scale of ISLM, the hydraulic process is heterogeneous and a typical continuum representation is inappropriate for design. Alternatively, a conditional stochastic approach using the simulated annealing (SA) technique is deemed useful for the imaging of heterogeneous hydraulic properties. Specifically, SA preserves transmissivity extremes and spatial complexity, both necessary for accurate conditioning of a flow simulator. Also, the stochastic continuum approach provides an avenue whereby uncertainty (or risk) may be addressed. Currently, the SA weaknesses are that it is computationally time consuming, and uncertainty may increase when simulating under conditions of statistical isotropy. Recognizing that ISLM exerts a dynamic influence on hydraulic properties with time, the mine design should be reevaluated at intervals throughout the evolution of the leaching process.

In our comparison of California and Turkish colemanites, we should first place the discussion in context. In order to exclude technical considerations, which are not germane to this paper, we must make the manifest and basic observation that if colemanite were not acceptable for the production of glass products it would not be used, and we would not be interested in this comparison at all. Suffice it to say that the colemanites, being calcium borates, provide a necessary flux in glass manu¬facture, together with the requisite degree of physical strength and chemical durability which can be achieved only by the use in glass of a. flux substanti¬ally free from alkali; so the sodium borates are automatically excluded from the production of textile fibers. Thus we have today under consideration only California colemanite, Turkish cole mite, and, because it provides a degree of competition to both, ABA, or anhy¬drous boric acid, which, although it is a refined intermediate and of much higher cost, it is also of a much higher degree of purity, and its characteristics can easily be modified to produce a desired end product, so we must include it in any consideration of high quality borates. [Calcim Borate Pentahydrate] Colemanite is a [calcium pentahydrate,] with the formula Ca2B6011.5H20. It has a theoretical B203 content of 50.8%.
