Sedimentation in highly, flocculated suspensions of fine particles, such as clays, occurs through individual settling units (flocs) that have very open structures and correspondingly low densities (typically less than 5% solids by volume). Such settling processes rapidly lead to the buildup of a bed of flocs that are essentially close-packed, with an inter-floc porosity of perhaps 50%. However, the overall solids content is no more than about 2% to 3% by volume. Consequently, the thickening process is dominated by the bed consolidation rather than by the simple settling of the individual flocs. Experimental measurements of sediment consolidation in flocculated clay suspensions indicate, for a given system, that consolidation rates are essentially determined by the solids concentration and can be evaluated using the classical Kynch treatment. However, these rates are strongly dependent on the physical, as well as the chemical, conditions of the flocculation process. Furthermore, the extent to which gravity consolidation proceeds depends on the total weight of the sediment (i.e., on the bed height and the solids concentration). The implications with respect to thickener operation and the requirements for the laboratory testing for thickener design are discussed.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. As orebodies being mined globally are of ever-decreasing grades, the focus on the concentration process has moved increasingly to the challenges faced in management of the gangue minerals. This is especially so in the flotation of platinum group minerals (PGMs), where head grades are typically in the region of 4–7 g/t. Hence, in PGM operations, a typical recovery of about 80 percent requires depressing about 85 percent of the gangue minerals. In a flotation cell the main control parameters are reagent type and dosage, froth depth and air addition rate. This paper reviews research projects carried out over an extended period aimed at optimizing the depression of gangue minerals: both those that are naturally floatable and those, such as chromite, that are entrained.  This has involved comparing the two major depressants used in the industry — guar and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) — in the depression of the relevant gangue minerals, as well as investigating their consequent effect on the behavior of the froth phase. Because most PGM flotation plants treat the ore as if all the PGMs are associated with sulfides, copper sulfate is widely used as an activator, but this can also lead to inadvertent activation of gangue minerals. Finally, chromite levels must be kept below 3–5 percent to avoid any negative effects on smelter performance, and thus it is important to reduce chromite recovery which mainly occurs due to entrainment through, for example, froth depth control.

INTRODUCTION The Keystone Tunnel project consists of widening an existing 7.3 m-wide (24 ft) highway tunnel to a width of 13.7 m (45 ft) to provide a three-lane, two-directional highway tunnel. The 13.7 m-wide tunnel was excavated in a staged drill-and-blast sequence through foliated schist, and was supported using pattern rock reinforcement and shotcrete. Notable project features are: the low vertical cover over the tunnel is less than the span of the opening; the project is the second instance where the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has accepted rock reinforcement as a permanent support element; and the project is the first instance where the FHWA is accepting shotcrete as the final interior surface of the tunnel. This paper covers the design and construction phases of the project. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) retained Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) to evaluate the feasibility, prepare construction plans and specifications, and provide construction management services for the widening of the Keystone Tunnel. The tunnel is located in the Black Hills National Forest area of South Dakota near the southwest corner of the state. The Keystone Tunnel is on U.S. Highway 16A, about 0.8 km (1/2 mile) north of Keystone which is approximately 32 km (20 miles) south of Rapid City (Figure 1). Highway 16A serves as an important transportation link between Rapid City and the Mount Rushmore National Monument which is located about 2 miles west of Keystone. As a significant mineral supplier, consumer of primary fuels, and producer of wastes and emissions to air, water, and land, the domestic copper industry through its investment and operating decisions influences the nation's economy and the environment. In turn, the copper industries' decisions are influenced by various factors: government energy and environmental policies, economic conditions, and technological considerations. The authors have developed a framework for assessing in an integrated manner the impact of these factors on the future investment and operating decisions made by copper firms. Specifically, this model is designed to capture the technology forcing nature of regulatory constraints, the differential situation of individual copper deposits and plant locations, and the price of factor inputs and conditions in the nation's economy. The capability to do this has only become real because of the decision of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to create Mineral Availability system1 or MAS. This system contains detailed but confidential information about each mine and mill in each of 35 mineral industries." Without MAS or a similar information system, the utilization of the methodology we offer would be impractical, but with. MAS it offers a unique technique of dealing with environmental-resources policy questions.

The US Bureau of Mines is conducting core leaching experiments with sulfuric acid on oxide copper ores from the Cyprus Casa Grande and Asarco/Freeport Santa Cruz deposit in Arizona to further the understanding of the leaching process in supergene copper ores as it relates to in situ mining. Leach solutions from atacamite mineralization contained 5 to 30 g/L (0.05 to 0.28 oz/gal) copper and few extraneous ions. Leachant from chrysocolla ores, with grades similar to the atacamite, contained 2 to 9 g/L (0.02 to 0.08 oz/ gal) copper and abundant extraneous ions. Quartz and K-feldspar had no impact on leach solution composition at any acid concentration up to 40 g/L - (0.39 oz/gal) while illite and sericite had minimal impact. Biotite, calcium-rich clay, and limonite have a significant impact on solution chemistry when there is abundant free acid in solution. High acid concentra¬tions increase acid consumption in ores with abundant biotite and limonite gangue. High acid concentrations can be used in ores with quartz, K feldspar, and sericite gangues without increasing acid consumption per unit of copper removed.

Until its closure in 1999, the Antler was North America's only active chlorite mine. The mine is located 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Butte in the Silver Star district - an old Montana gold mining district. In 1975, two prospectors searching for talc re-examined a prospect showing a green, fine-grained mineral resembling talc. Following identification and testing of this magnesian chlorite (variety clinochlore), Cyprus Industrial Minerals began processing ore from this deposit in 1976. Chlorite veins ranging up to 30 feet (9 m) in thickness were formed by essentially complete replacement of Precambrian (Archean?) quartzofeldspathic gneiss. Chlorite replacement was controlled by near- vertical faults. These chlorite veins, typically surrounded by envelopes of sericitic alteration, were formed by the introduction of magnesium-rich hydrothermal fluids, probably related to the Proterozoic talc-forming event in southwestern Montana. Luzenac America, Inc. acquired Cyprus' talc operations in 1992, and continued to mine this deposit until the ore body was mined out in March 1999, and the mine was reclaimed. Total sorted ore production from this deposit is about 250,000 short tons (st) (227,000 metric tons [mt]). Chlorite from this deposit was primarily used in ceramic and paint applications.

Underclays are associated with coals found in eastern Oklahoma. These coals are of bituminous rank and are in beds of Middle and Late Pennsylvanian age. They occur in an area of about 8,000 mi2, within the southern part of the Western Interior Coal Region. The rocks of the area consist of a thick series of sandstones, shales, underclays, coals, and limestones. There are more than 40 beds of bituminous coal in the state, but only 12 of these have been mined over large areas. The 12 are, from oldest to youngest: the lower Hartshorne, upper Hartshorne, McAlester (Stigler), upper McAlester, Cavanal, Rowe, Secor, Weir-Pittsburg, Mineral, Croweburg, Iron Post, and Dawson coals. None of the underclay associated with these coal beds is known to have been exploited commercially. Nine samples of underclay from beneath the Croweburg coal were collected over a wide area in the eastern Oklahoma coal field for evaluation. The underclays are usually shades of gray with brown or orange iron-oxide staining. Although soft and plastic in some places, they are generally hard and slickensided, and contain abundant carbonized plant fragments. Bulk chemical analyses, clay mineral identification, and ceramic tests were performed on each underclay sample. The dominant clay minerals are illite and kaolinite with some mixed-layer clays. Silica (Si02) ranges from 45.96% to 59.03% and alumina (Al2O3) varies from 14.98% to 23.60%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Re- search Center conducted the ceramic evaluations. Samples were slow fired from 1,000°C to 1,250°C in 50°C intervals. Bulk density, color, percent linear shrinkage, and percent absorption were determined for each slow fire test. All Croweburg underclay samples are best suited for building brick.

This paper is motivated by the belief that increasing drilling and blasting costs will not necessarily bring about better digging or crushing productivity. As a matter of fact it can be counter productive as the ensuing discussion will show. In the two case studies presented herein when powder factor increased, productivity at a rope shovel and at a primary crusher decreased. Experience has shown that equipment (shovel and primary crusher) productivity increases as the powder factor increases and concurrently operating costs decrease. This is illustrated by Figure 1where the graph shows (assuming drilling costs constant) that for increases in powder factor initially operating costs might fall till a certain point and then they start to go up again. By the same token we need to understand what is the behavior of the operation’s productivity. It seems intuitive productivity goes up for increases in powder factor but when an operation reaches the point of minimum operating cost one could say that productivity reached its maximum. For continuing increases in powder factor can productivity still go up or does it go down? This paper presents two examples where the productivities of a surface coal mine and of a quarry are reduced for increases in powder factor. This indicates that these two operations could be operating to the right of their minimum operating costs and maximum productivity and therefore wasting precious drilling and blasting dollars and resources. Moreover, their productivity is following the red dotted line in Figure 1 and the question becomes can they follow the blue dotted line for increased drilling and blasting costs? The industry owes to itself to determine this minimum operating cost point and what can be done in case that the productivity goes down afterwards despite an increase in drilling and blasting costs. In other words, utilize your drilling and blasting resources correctly. In the two examples that follow single explosive loading strategies make powder factor a valid means of comparing the results of productivity as a function of powder factor. Also, external factors such as equipment operator influence are eliminated due to the long time span considered in the analysis

Disposal of smelter slag may be subjected to regulatory leach tests to deter- mine whether they produce a leachate containing contaminants in excess of stated limits. Contaminants that are most often of concern for smelter slags are As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The present regulatory tests are based on the assumption of storage in a municipal landfill dump, where wastes are in contact with organic acids. Since slags are not normally stored in such an environment, these tests do not adequately assess the true leachability potential of the slags. Ten slags from six major Canadian nonferrous sulfide smelters were studied. Leaching was done following regulatory and modified tests, including leaching in columns with synthetic acid rain for a 25-week period. The slags were characterized by mineralogical analysis before and after leaching with synthetic rain. The synthetic mineral equivalents (hereafter referred simply as phases) in the slow cooled slags consist of fayalite grains and dendrites, amorphous glass, some spinel and small quantities of complex sulfidic prills and metallics. The phases in the quenched slags consist of amorphous glass, some spinel and small quantities of complex sulfidic prills and metallics. Some metal dissolution took place during leaching. However, for all leaching tests, the concentrations were always below the regulated limits. In general, the content of the potentially leachable elements remains unchanged in the fayalite, in the amorphous glass and in the spinel, whereas the quantity of sulfidic prill and metallics decreases after leaching. Therefore, most of the deleterious element dissolution comes from the sulfidic prills and metallic phases. Metal dissolution increases by crushing the slag, probably due to an increased exposure of the sulfidic prills to the leaching solutions.

14.1 INTRODUCTION From the time the last recoverable gold is extracted from ore on a heap leach, the ore - now spent ore - changes from being the resource, indeed the raison d'etre of the operator, to a potential liability. The spent ore contains process chemicals and constituents leached from the ore both in the interstitial pore water in the heap and on the surfaces of spent ore. If these chemical species were released to the environment, it could have a potential impact on the quality of both surface water and groundwater resources. Accordingly, the spent ore must be left in a condition where it does not present a potential environmental liability. This can be accomplished either on a decommissioned pad or, if the heap leach is operated as a load/unload scheme, in a waste facility. In general, the residual cyanide level in the spent ore is the perceived controlling factor when determining whether the leached material is suitable for abandonment. Regulatory authorities set permit conditions for heap leach abandonment in terms of residual cyanide levels, for example, Smith and Struhsacker (1987). This chapter discusses cyanide degradation and methods for detoxifying a heap leach in order to meet regulatory limits/permit conditions for abandonment. Cyanide degradation and detoxification by "natural" processes are described initially, based on the chemistry and geochemistry discussed in Chapter 13. This leads to a review of chemical treatment processes for detoxification of spent ore. The advantages and apparent disadvantages are then appraised. 14.2 NATURAL DEGRADATION AND DETOXIFICATION For the purposes of discussion, "natural" detoxification processes can be divided into two alternatives: • Passive abandonment (the so-called "do nothing" option); and • Water In the first alternative, the spent ore is merely left on the leach pad to age; the second alternative involves the flushing of the spent ore with water.

Borehole mining, as a viable concept for recovering deep sedimentary mineral resources, historically has been long on promise but short on results. Application of the technology seems best suited for recovery of Miocene phosphate resources on the East Coast of the US. These deposits are potentially enormous in scope and underlie sections of the coastal plain and the near offshore continental shelf. The landside portion of these deposits is generally too deep to mine using conventional open pit methods. Recovery of these minerals requires development of alternative mining systems. A significant proportion of the offshore resources appear to occur at depths below the practical limits of cutter suction dredges and may even exceed the limits of bucket ladder dredges. In most cases, these deposits are covered by overburden that must he removed and redeposited before the mineral section can be mined. The depth, thickness, composition of overburden and environmental sensitivity of a particular location would greatly impact mining system selection. It is probable that dredging would not be an environmentally acceptable mining method in many of the areas underlain by this phosphate rock. In cases such as these, new processes such as borehole mining must be evolved or the resource will remain undeveloped. A borehole mining test program, using an existing prototype borehole system, successfully extracted Miocene phosphate in northeast Florida in 1984-1985. The top of the main mineral zone was 80 m (261 ft) below the surface. Based on the results of this test program. plus subsequent laboratory testing and engineering studies, a new prototype borehole mining system was designed in 1986. This design incorporated several innovations of offering potentially higher productivity and lower power consumption than was achieved with the previous test unit. Economic restraints at that tine prevented the actual construction and testing of this new design.

In 1993, a lawsuit was filed on behalf ofnative groups in Ecuador against Texaco for environmental damage resulting from petrole­um production activities which had occurred many years earlier. The basis of the lawsuit at the time was that Texaco had failed to perform its foreign activities in the same manner that it operated in the U.S. No environmental regulations were in existence in Ecuador at the time of Texaco's operations. Also in 1993, a lawsuit for over $3 billion Australian was filed on behalf of native New Guineans for alleged environ­mental damages and health impacts that occurred as a result of BHP's operations at its Ok Tedi Mine. Since then, Royal Dutch Shell has been subjected to major criticism for environmental damage caused by its operations in Nigeria. A more recent report has criticized Shell for groundwater contamination of an aquifer in Turkey. Southern Peru Copper is now defending against a lawsuit filed by citizens exposed to air emissions from smelter operations in Peru. In all of these cases, much of the alleged damages occurred many years previous. A defense com­monly made by the companies has been that operations were conducted according to the standards in place at the time. This has not limited the lawsuits nor minimized the international publicity which has followed. While such lawsuits have been common in the U.S. for many years, their appearance in other nations have pointed out a growing sense of worldwide concern with regard to the impacts of industrial operations. Of particular concern is the fact that lawsuits have been filed in countries that have up to now had few, if any, environmental regulations. The regulatory environment has been a part of most U.S. business operations since the early 1970's. Now, however, envi­ronmental regulations are starting to be implemented in many less developed nations. This has led to the formulation of a myriad of standards and approaches to environmental regulation around the world. For multinational companies, the challenge becomes one of anticipating the level of compliance that will be required to minimize liabilities not only for the present but also in the future. The purpose of this paper is to provide some guid­ance with regards to choosing a level of compliance, particular­ly as it applies to water quality.

Outokumpu introduced Flash Flotation in the early l 980's for the recovery of floatable material from grinding circuits. The devel­opment came as a result of surveys made in the company's own concentrators, initiated to find ways of improving recoveries with increasingly complex and lower grade feeds. Hydrocyclones make a separation on the basis of particle size and mass, resulting in the "over collection" of fine grained, high S.G. particles. Minerals such as pentlandite, galena and gold are easily caught in the circulating load around the mill until they are overground and rendered more difficult to collect. In the case of downstream flotation this may simply involve a reduction in the rate coefficient due to the finer sizes or, as is commonly experienced in gold operations, the mate­rial is slimed and coated onto non-floating gangue and is eventual­ly lost to tails. At the time of Outokumpu's plant surveys, it was a relatively common practice, particularly in Pb operations, to have a flotation section fed directly from the secondaiy mill discharge. This is called unit flotation and certainly provided an improvement but very high wear rates and frequent sanding out of the cells was com­mon. The development of the SkimAir® Flash Flotation cell by Outokumpu provided a subtle but quite dramatic departure from the unit cell approach. Now it was possible to feed cyclone under­flow into a special purpose-built flotation machine and recover a final grade concentrate from the grinding circuit (see Figure I). The cell was designed to handle the coarse circulating load, per­mitting the coarsest fractions to be short-circuited back to the mill and retain the floatable sizes for a nominal time of 30 seconds to several minutes. The short retention time was possible largely due to the relatively clean content of the cyclone underflow stream. This means that the fine gangue is not present except in small quan­tities and most of the fine to mid-size paiiicles are higher S.G. and more likely represent valuable mineral. This condition provides for very high rate coefficients. Typical operations would recover 40-60% of the valuable mineral in this fashion and improvements in recovery were typically from 2-5% for sulphide minerals to the 5-20% range for gold and silver.

Three International Symposiums-the 14th International Minerals Processing Congress, the 17th APCOM, and the SME-AIME Fall Meeting special symposium on Design and Installation of Com¬minution Circuits-held in 1982 contained a number of papers relating to the fundamentals of processing coals and metallic minerals. In addition, many papers were published elsewhere in the literature. Some of the more significant papers are discussed below. Flavel reviewed key performance parameters, such as energy-size relationships for crushing processes and presented a fundamental basis for optimizing crusher productivity and possibly for development of improved crushers. Pascoe et al. reviewed the use of such control schemes. Magerowski and Karra presented a paper on a computer program developed to and in the design of crushing circuits. The problems associated with the scale-up to very large ball mills were discussed by Arbiter and Harris, and by Kavetsky and Whiten. Both groups concluded that limits on mill productivity arise due to problems associated with particle breakage and transport through mills. Austin et al., and Herbst and Rajamini reviewed the state of the art for the use of grinding circuit simulators for design and control. The effects of mill operating and design parameters on selection and breakage were discussed in detail. The philosophy of control and instrumentation for grinding circuits was extensively discussed by Kawatra and Seitz. Their paper presented for the first time an analytical basis for the inferential particle sizing technique and provided a fundamental basis for the implementation of this technique. The effect of reagent addition variation's on the performance of coal flotation circuits was reported by Kawatra and Waters, and on sulfide flotation circuits by Klimpel et al. Both groups analyzed circuit behavior from a kinetic point of view and reached similar conclusions on the effects of collectors and frothers. The computer simulation of an iron ore flotation circuit also was reported by Kawatra et al. In this work particular attention was paid to the phenomena of froth overloading. Klimpel et al., Kawatra and Waters, and Niemi et al. discussed the philosophy of control by flotation circuits from a fundamental kinetic point of view. An extension of the use of high intensity magnetic separators to the beneficiation of specular hematite was discussed by Thayer and Linkson.

Introduction Ontario's diverse industrial mineral resource base includes structural minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone, and dolostone. These resources are used to produce aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, cement, lime, and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Palezoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were more than 140 Mt (154 million st) of aggregates produced in 1985. About 115 Mt (128 million st) of that was produced in southern Ontario with the rest being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. Structural industrial minerals account for more than 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production. The remaining 20% is accounted for by the nonstructural minerals, such as salt, which is produced in the southwestern part of the province. A host of other nonstructural industrial minerals are known. Production, though, is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite, and byproduct metallurgical sulfur products (Fig. 1). Major production is close to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and northcentral US. With an abundant variety of industrial mineral resources and the large population within 650 km (400 miles) of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's nine million people accounted for about 35% of Canada's entire $476.3 billion gross domestic product in 1985. This equates to about one-third of the nation's buying power being within a 200-km (125-mile) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well-developed industrial minerals industry that fulfills most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario. Nonstructural industrial minerals are similarly well placed to compete in this high demand area. Although Ontario manufacturers still import some of these materials, Ontario products are achieving significant market share. And, they serve the needs of neighboring provinces and states. Present production and trends Ontario has traditionally produced significant amounts of industrial minerals. This produc¬tion had a value of $956 million in 1984 (Table 1). Structural materials production in 1985 and 1986 approached or exceeded levels not seen since the early 1970s. Many new products have been developed using these raw materials. Gravity concentration - the separation of minerals according to their relative density - is one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Even though modern technology has developed a range of other processes, gravity concentration remains as one of the most important methods employed for mineral separation. The range of minerals recovered covers a wide spectrum, from andelusite to zircon, from coal to diamond, from gold to industrial mineral. The long history of gravity concen¬tration, along with a still imperfect understanding of the various mechanisms involved has resulted in a series of ingenious engineers developing, some¬times perfecting and sometimes rejecting, a wide range of equipment, suited for a variety of different duties. 'Selection' in the context of gravity separation, is primarily the choice of the right type of equipment for the separation in hand; 'sizing' of the correctly chosen unit is, more often than not, determining the appropriate number of units required to suit the throughput. The accent of this chapter will, therefore be 'selection'. A brief description of the major types of gravity concentration equipment will follow a discussion of the factors which determine the selection of the correct unit. CLASSIFICATION OF GRAVITY CONCENTRATION EQUIPMENT All concentration equipment has a primary function and a secondary function. The primary function is the efficient separation of the constituent minerals into two or more discrete phases; the secondary function is to effectively cause the discharge of these discrete phases into separate compartments (Aplan 1975). For maximum efficiency of operation, the forces which effect the primary function should not also result in the secondary function occurring; in such cases optimum operating conditions required for the primary function, separation, may have to be compromised to ensure reasonably efficient operation of the secondary function, product discharge. INTRODUCTION Mining activity and basic geometry of open pit mines represent major obstacles in geotechnical mapping. Mining creates a constantly changing topographic base which may require corresponding updates of field sheets before mapping can proceed. The rapid pace of mining operations may also threaten removal of important geologic and engineering features before adequate base maps and surveyed control can be established. Maintaining such control during the mapping process is yet another complication. In addition, basic geometry yields nearly vertical outcrops. Access required for direct observation and measurement, essential to conventional plane table or Brunton techniques, may be impossible on such surfaces. Also, nearly vertical surfaces appear fore- shortened in plan view. This reduction in area provides little room for recording geotechnical detail. The difficulties encountered in open pit mapping can be substantially reduced by utilizing a modified form of plane table photogrammetry. This technique employs photographs taken from the ground as the base upon which details are recorded. The information is later transferred to plan maps using the plane table principal of location by intersection (Davis and Foote, 1953). Any change in topography can be accommodated by simply taking additional photographs. Proper spatial representation in plan view can be determined later when updated maps and surveyed control are available. In addition, horizontal photographs from the ground portray vertical surfaces as they are normally viewed thus providing maximum area for recording details. Any detail which can be identified on the photograph can be located correctly even though the actual feature is physically inaccessible. The technique presented in this paper was developed by the author for special applications at Kennecott's Bingham operation in 1970. The procedure was rapidly adopted for general use and has proven to be a practical tool for detailed investigation of potentially unstable areas (Zavodni and McCarter, 1976) and routine geological mapping (Richardson, 1975). Major advantages, other than those mentioned above, include: The speed and accuracy are greater than for conventional plane table or Brunton methods. The photo- graph represents a view from a station at some distance from the area being mapped. This vantage point allows evaluation of possible continuity of structures from one level to another which may not be evident at close range. INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. INTRODUCTION The work of the metallurgical engineer engaged in developing a leach, solvent extraction electro- winning process usually begins in the laboratory and generally proceeds via pilot plant testing before finally resulting in a commercial operation. The path leading to the development of the eventual process will involve a test program on leaching in order to derive information on the amenability of the copper-bearing material to acid dissolution, under various conditions. Commonly in North America the leach process of choice is either dump or heap leaching but it may also be in-situ leaching or the treatment of mine waste- waters and bleed streams. In the past, agitation and vat leaching have also been included in the list of options. Currently the economics of copper production dictate that only material of mineralogy and grade, capable of being leached without prior milling, will lead to a viable process. This is not necessarily true in other parts of the world where grades are higher and milling costs lower and therefore this paper con- fronts all the techniques available to the metallurgical engineer in terms of the evaluation of the solvent extraction process. Understanding the objectives of a laboratory and pilot plant evaluation of a solvent extraction route is important and these are described in some detail in this paper. Of at least equal importance is understanding limitations of such a test program and this aspect of process development is also discussed with reference to the kind of equipment and experimental practices that have been shown to produce results consistent with the objectives. WHERE TO BEGIN? At the inception of a project much information is developed on the variables of the leach process and indeed in some instances the type of leach that best suits the ore to be treated is the subject of intense investigation (Wadsworth 1983). The decision to treat the leach solution by solvent extraction focuses attention on the selection of the extractant most suited to the nature of the chemical composition of the solution. A laboratory screening program will probably need to be arranged in order to assist in narrowing the options and the following is suggested for this initial screening. Selection of a Representative Leach Solution This is preferably obtained from leaching a representative sample of the ore under conditions likely to pertain in the commercial leach circuit. As the conceptualized circuit flow sheet will undoubtedly involve the recycle of aqueous solutions via the leach, then it is desirable to know the nature of and the likely level of the impurity ions in the solution as well as the concentration of copper. The other most important parameter that is required is the free acid (Anon, Acorga Analytical Method) content of the solution. As a rule of thumb, it is always true that recovery across SX is maximized as the pH of the leach solution rises. Whilst a high pH may be desirable for SX recovery, it is not always desirable for the pH (or more correctly, the free acid) of the leach to rise too high. The working range, therefore, tends to be between 1.5-2.5 pH. At an early stage in process development it is likely that a number of ill-defined conditions will exist, making it difficult to decide on typical leach conditions in which case the screening tests should be carried out using a synthetic leach solution prepared from laboratory chemicals. In doing this the copper and free content should be carefully controlled along with the appropriate addition of major impurity ions as their sulphate salts.
