The accuracy of inflow estimates depends largely on how well permeability is characterized. Permeability is best evaluated as a statistical distribution. For the Chattahoochee Tunnel, this distribution was obtained with a large number of packer tests performed in 50 boreholes along the alignment. The distribution of packer-test data may not accurately reflect permeability, however, due to the limits of the test method and the luck of the field investigation. These discrepancies may be overcome by using log-normal plots of the data to develop a permeability model that will be use din lieu of the data to calculate inflow.

The conveyor housing's corroded, exposed metal- deck was cleaned and cocooned to prevent renewed corrosion, at less than the cost of replacing the structure. And the process did not require operations to shut down. That was the result for Akzo Salt at its mine under Lake Erie's Whiskey Island, just off Cleveland, OH'S north coast. The exposed metal deck was on the underside of a covered, outdoor conveyor used to load mined road salt into boats.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an alkaline oxidative pretreatment to increase the recovery of gold from refractory sulfide ores containing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and/or pyrite (FeS2). Pretreatment of a low grade ore containing 0.4% FeAsS, 3.5% FeS2, and 2.74g/mt Au with 1.2m NaOH, 40 psig o2, 100° C, and 4 hr in a 2-L autoclave resulted in 94 to 96% sulfide oxidation. cyanidation of the pretreated residue resulted in 88% Au extraction compared to <20% Au extraction for untreated ore. Cyanide consumption was 0.25 kg NaCN per metric ton of ore. A flowsheet for treating sulfidic low-grade gold ore is proposed.

A method for removing nickel and vanadium contaminants from spent HDS catalysts involves pretreating the catalyst with H2S followed by extracting the metals with an acidic solution of ferric ion. The ferric ion solution alone removes significant amounts of active ingredients, cobalt and molybdenum; however, by pretreating with H2S, the extraction becomes more selective for removal of Ni and V.

The operating budget includes all expensed production costs (i.e., all costs reported as cost of goods sold) but does not include expenditures on capital equipment, which are usually justified using discounted cash flow techniques.

Coal preparation for a company having several sources of coal and several contracts for sale of coal was modeled. The objective was to minimize wash loss by selecting the quantity of coal to be supplied from each source and the appropriate washbox specific gravity setting to yield contract quality for a given shipment. constraints inposed by silo and stockpile sizes, plant and rehandling capacities, and varying coal quality specifications were included in the model. Solution is by iterative linear programming on an Apple II.

Modern improvements in hydrogeology make it possible to predict with good reliability the performance and cost of ground water pumping systems in many tunneling situations. The testing and analysis techniques are presented. Data from the Buffalo NY LRRTS (1978-1980) illustrate the successful application of the technique for tunneling in rock. Data from the Red Hook Interceptor Tunnel in Brooklyn NY (1978) illustrate the application in soft ground. The Red Hook project also illustrates concerns for the side effects from dewatering, such as ground settlement and damage to timber structures. At Red Hook protective measures included compressed air, artificial recharge and controlled dewatering. Given the uncertainties of the underground, the possibility of unexpected situations must be considered. A hard rock sewer tunnel in Atlanta, Georgia (1982) illustrates an unexpected problem, and the emergency measures used to solve it.

The Rio Piedras Alignment Section 7 of the Tren Urbano is currently being constructed beneath a historic commercial section of San Juan. Different portions of the section are being constructed using open cut, cut-and-cover, New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM), and as tacked drift mined support system. The combination of complex geology, low ground cover, and several innovative construction methods present many challenges to the ground control program. Mining and construction sequences were first developed to minimize ground movements and risk of damage to structures. A unique compensation-grouting program was developed to improve the ground, limit settlement, and recover settlements incurred due to mining.

In the 1990s, Cleaner Production (CP) approaches were successfully introduced to a number of industrial sectors in South Africa. Building on this success, the South African Water Research Commission has commissioned a 3-year study to investigate the use of CP and its related set of environmental assessment and management tools in the mining industry. A scoping study is being carried out on the current knowledge of CP approaches being used in the industry, as well as the proactive and preventative measures being undertaken. One of the significant findings of the scoping study is that distinct differences exist between the larger global companies and the smaller local companies. Being a water research project a key focus area of the project is to reduce the impacts related to mining on the South African water resources. Some of the significant water related threats identified include acid mine drainage, the shortage of the resource and the effects of inter-mine flow.

Offshore oil and gas production operations have moved from water depths of about 50 feet in 1948 to the present record depth of 340 feet. Although mobile drilling rigs are widely used for exploratory drilling, most development drilling and production operations have been conducted above water from the decks of fixed, bottom-founded platforms. Increasing water depths have caused problems associated with design and construction of these platforms and with laying of pipelines, but not so much with other activities. After a platform is installed, drilling, production, and maintenance operations are similar to those onshore and are relatively unaffected by water depth. Events of 1968 indicate that offshore production may soon extend into much deeper water. These events include leasing of Santa Barbara Channel acreage in water depths over 1500 feet, and the successful drilling of a wildcat well in 1300 feet. Designs have been developed for platforms suitable for installation in water over 600 feet deep, and studies suggest they may be used in some areas to water depths of 800 to 1000 feet. Buoyant towers can probably support above-surface platforms in water 1000 feet and deeper. Although the cost of either of these platforms will be high, once installed they will permit relatively low-cost development drilling and production operations compared with estimates for subsea production systems. In some cases, savings in development drilling costs alone could pay out the platform investment.

INTRODUCTION Strassa lies in the central part of Bergslagen, a tradi¬tional mining district, on the eastern side of the Stora Valley at an elevation of about 200 m above sea level. A railway siding runs between the mine and the Stora railway station from which there are railway connections to the shipping port and iron and steel works in Oxelosund, about 224 km away. The distance to the provin¬cial capital Orebro is about 60 km. The climate is typi¬cal for this part of central Sweden and is illustrated by the diagram of monthly precipitation and temperatures for the years 1968-1975 (Fig. 1). HISTORY There is no certain information as to when the Strassa mine was first worked, but it is known from sur¬viving accounts of mine inspectors that there were smelt¬ing works in operation in nearby villages in the 12th century. An example is the Gusselhytta ore smelting works, 10 km south of Strassa, which dates from this period. Around the year 1540 there were two smelting works in Strassa, the Upper Karberg and Lower Karberg works. Ore for these smelters was probably taken from Strassa and from the adjacent Blanka mine. In the year 1624 Strassa is mentioned by the painter Jons Nils Krook in an account of the iron mines in the Linde mining district (Linde Bergslags Jarngruvor). Several mines were listed in the area, the deepest being about 30 m. An impressive power installation is mentioned in 1639, including a piston system of lashed poles for transmit¬ting power from the Stora River to the Strassa fields. Its length was 2670 m. Common ground comprising about 20.2 km2 (5000 acres) of forest was allocated in 1689 for the furtherance of mining operations. Until the beginning of this century only the rich cen¬tral parts of the ore body were mined and these yielded, after handpicking, lump ore suitable for smelter feed. An example of the ore grades from these early times is an analysis of ore from the "Big Mine" (Storgruvan) from the year 1873: 48.5% Fe, 0.008% P, and 0.06% S. This same year a total of about 18 000 t was ex¬tracted from the Strassa mine. OWNERSHIP The mine was owned and run until 1874 by a min¬ing association made up of 119 so-called "bergsman," who were homesteaders often engaged in agriculture and timber-cutting as well. In that year the Strossa Grufvebolag (Mining Co.) was founded. In 1906 it was con¬verted into a joint stock company, the Strossa Gruveaktiebolag. This was acquired in 1907 by Metallurgiska AB for the implementation of Gustav Grondal&apos;s beneficiating and briquetting methods, for which the Strassa ore was well suited. The same year saw the completion of a new ore dressing plant with an annual production of 46 000 t of ore concentrate. In 1911 the mine passed to new hands, and in 1913 it was purchased by an Austrian company. Extensive new installations were made and in 1915 a new dressing and briquetting plant was completed with twice the capacity of the old one. In 1917 the Strassa mine was acquired by Granges. Be¬cause of unfavorable business trends and technical diffi¬culties, mining operations were brought to a close in 1923. Pumping kept the mine free of water until 1933 but it was completely filled ten years later. Up to 1950 the surface buildings and installations remained intact but the large dressing and briquetting plant burned to the ground in that year. Today only the machine shop re¬mains from this earlier period of operation, now housing parts of the Mineral Processing Laboratory. The decision to take up mining operations again was made in 1955 and construction work began the follow¬ing year. Of the old installation, only the "southern shaft" could be used for some development drifting after it had been completed with a new headframe. Other¬wise, all the buildings and installations required for the operations had to be rebuilt. New installations ready by 1960 were office and personnel facilities, a new shaft and headframe, a sorting and concentrating plant, a macadam plant, settling basins, pump stations, and a railway and yard with transport equipment. The hydrometallurgical treatment of gold and silver ores by ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions in the presence of a copper catalyst has been actively studied in recent years. Such a process strategy is very attractive due to the low toxicity of the lixiviant and the efficient recovery of the precious metals from difficult-to-treat ores. Important features of the ammoniacal thiosulfate system for the recovery of precious metals from various sources are reviewed in this paper, including leaching, metal recovery, and system stability.

Sand and gravel deposits may be explored by many different methods. The methods used by The Standard Slag Company are primarily two in nature. One is using an auger which is limited in depth by various soil conditions. The other is a heavy wall dry sampler and a heavy wall wet sampler. The heavy wall dry sampler takes continuous uncontaminated samples up to seven inches in diameter. The heavy wall wet sampler takes continuous uncontaminated samples up to six inches in diameter. For us, the maximum depth of the heavy wall samplers has been two hundred fifty feet of which one hundred feet was above the water table and one hundred fifty feet was below the water table.

Results of selective flocculation of natural ores containing two or more minerals and of synthetic mineral mixtures do not usually agree with what is expected on the basis of the results from single mineral tests (Acar and Somasundaran, 1985). This is mainly due to the ionic species released by the minerals, which act differently under different pH values. The objective of this investigation was to study 1) the surface chemical composition of selected sulfide minerals-natural chalcopyrite and pentlandite and synthetic covellite, millerite, and pyrrhotite-and 2) the changes brought about by the dissolved mineral species. Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) was used to perform the surface analyses.

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude ore source located closer to the mill prompted the 1986 drilling of a previously mapped, talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered a potential source of crude talc ore because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing have allowed this deposit to be developed into an ore body. By definition, an ore body has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by ore tenor.

Management support systems are extremely important to mining management to enable them to operate their company as a business. Management must give attention to the financial, maintenance, materials, and other reporting and control systems that are necessary to successfully operate a mining company. This subsection describes the management support systems that are critical to most mining companies. In this introductory review, the major objectives and functions of these management support systems will be introduced. The following topics will expand on the functions and key concepts as well as other considerations in each of these systems areas. Additionally, this introductory review will touch upon the unique environment that mining companies find themselves in from a management and personnel standpoint and the effect of this environment on management systems. Additionally, specific keys to successful systems installations and acceptance in the mining industry are discussed.

A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Caterpillar 994 Class) for use as primary loading equipment in open-pit iron-ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Information was gathered on loader selection rationale; operation and maintenance experience; and production, availability and costs. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. This paper summarizes the field data that was collected, including an economic comparison of wheel loaders and cable shovels in an iron-ore application.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) pioneered the development of disposable filters for reducing diesel particulate emissions from permissible mining machines. The USBM is now evaluating filter media that can withstand the high exhaust temperatures on nonpermissible machines. The goal of the evaluation is to find an inexpensive medium that can be cleaned or disposed of after use, and will reduce particulate emissions by 50 % or more. This report summarizes the results from screening tests of a lava rock and woven fiberglass filter media. The lava rock media exhibited low collection efficiencies, but with very low increases in exhaust back pressure. Preliminary results indicate a collection efficiency exceeding 80 % for the woven fiber media. Testing of both media is continuing.

The method of mine ventilation involving heated air, which is frequently used in mines in cold regions, does not correspond to the natural conditions prevailing in permafrost regions; it is not economical and leads to a series of complications which can be prevented or greatly reduced by lowering the temperature of the air stream entering the mine until it is equal to or very close to the temperature of the frozen ground This paper presents ventilation design approaches which can be engineered to provide the required micro-climate and thus en- sure the stability bf the ground for placer mines in permafrost. Specifically three ventilation design approaches are presented: 1) design based on minimum thermal impact; 2) design based on positive/negative heat accumulation in the existing mine airways; and 3) design based on heat exchanging devices such as thermosyphons placed above ground.
