The results of using a simple analytical solution and a relatively complex numerical model to estimate ground-water inflow to an open pit mine are compared. The analytical solution assumes lateral, radial flow to a fully penetrating pit in an idealized confined aquifer, whereas the numerical model simulates fully three-dimensional flow to a partially penetrating pit from a water table aquifer. The latter is obviously a more realistic simulation of the problem, but the former method is significantly easier to use, Comparison of the results obtained with the two methods for some typical hydrogeologic conditions encountered in mining yields ratios between them in the range of 0.15 to 0.60. These values can be used as a coefficient in the Pit Flow analytical solution to produce reasonable estimates of in-flow even when there are significant differences from the idealized conditions implicit in its application.

In recent years, equipment manufacturers have been busy developing remote control systems to catch up with the sophistication and efficiency of continuous miners. Now the tables are turned, and manufacturers are undertaking the new challenge of upgrading, refining and equipping continuous miners to take full advantage of the capabilities made possible by modern, successful remote control systems. Because the operator can safely advance the miner farther without pulling out for roof bolting, continuous miners now need to be equipped with means of complying with correct face ventilation, dust suppression, methane detection, diffusion and improved lighting. Some of the exciting possibilities being developed to catch up with remote control include feedback controls using laser beams as datum points, coal sensing devices with feedback signals to show the operator what the machine is doing, show where it is relative to the coal seam, how hard it is working, and more sophisticated use of cyclic control. Mining machinery manufacturers have accepted the new challenges, and faster, safer mining procedures are already in sight.

The growing national concern over energy has aroused a great deal of interest in the most efficient and least costly way to use our remaining fossil fuel reserves. A number of studies have been published which compare the overall thermal efficiency and cost of gas and electric energy. These studies have been carried out by a wide variety of organizations including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Rand Corporation, The Stanford Research Institute, and The Institute of Gas Technology. This paper is an attempt, by PGandE, a large combined gas and electric utility serving most of the northern and parts of central California, to compare the cost and efficiency of gas and electric energy for certain residential appliances using actual operating data and financial statistics for the year 1974, and thereby develop some guidelines for future energy developments utilizing these limited fossil resources. The appliances chosen for the study were kitchen ranges, clothes dryers, hot water and space heaters. These appliances were selected because they can be served with either gas or electricity and they account for approximately one-third of PGandE's total residential electric sales and nearly all of PGandE's residential gas sales.

Fine coal flotation using gaseous carbon dioxide has demonstrated the potential for producing superclean coal. The success of this new flotation .procedure is attributed to the coal's high adsorption potential for CO2. To understand the nature of gas-phase CO2 adsorption at the coal surface, in-situ FTIR spectroscopy in a controlled-environment chamber with an ultravacuum sys-tem has been used and the results are discussed in view of other experimental results from differential scanning calorimetry. It has been found that specifically adsorbed CO2 molecules at the coal surface are polarized and have a characteristic doublet at 2336 and 2361 cm-1. Two adsorption states have been proposed to account for the doublet observed from in-situ FTIR spectroscopy measurements. It is believed that the band at 2336 cm-1 originates from the activated site adsorption of CO2 and that the band at 2361 cm-1 arises due to the molecular aggregation of CO2 within the coal pores.

Let's review the economic factors in mill design. Talking about engineering economics in mill design reminds me of an old' saying "There are several ways to handle women but nobody knows what they are." I'm sure that the same economic factors do not apply to each of our mill designs, but for the sake of emphasis, it is well to review a few of them. They are so simple that we are apt to feel they are not important. Other speakers today are talking about the engineering factors of mill design, but I'm asking the question "Have we checked the economic factors involved in these designs? Have we checked the obvious? Many great discoveries have resulted from analysis of the things that appeared to be obvious all the time. What are some of these economic factors? Perhaps the most basic one is simply the value of minerals in place if minerals have value in the ground, they have value only because many important and different considerations add up to the probability that the minerals can be mined, beneficiated and disposed of profitably. The size formation and quality of the ore body, the distance from market, and the transportation available to the market area, depreciation rates, taxes, and the ownership interests involved are but some of the factors that must dovetail into the answer of profit, an answer prerequisite to hoped-for financing.

To plan a safe and efficient coal mining operation, the design engineer should use all the available information regarding the property to be exploited. The reliability of the mining operation must be as high as possible so that the plants relying on the coal can operate at the maximum design capacity. A good design should incorporate all of the known geological characteristics of the deposit, the structural and physical properties of the coal, as well as the rock which will form the roof and floor of the mine openings. A systematic method is proposed as a guide to insure a mine design that will be safe, efficient and will minimize surface disturbances resulting from mining operations. It is anticipated that the method proposed will result in maximum extraction at perhaps minimum cost to the operator. In general, to develop a mining area, several factors are systematically reviewed: (1) determination of the economic minability of the deposit, (2) the computation of the coal reserves, (3) the marketability of the coal, and (4) the life of the property. In general, boreholes are drilled in a predetermined pattern and geophysical or geological methods are used to log the boreholes. The information so obtained is primarily used to determine the quality and the extent of the deposit and to determine to some extent such geological features as faults, barren areas, washouts, and channels.

Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

Transitions between geological/geotechnical soil units have a critical impact on the operation and performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling is used to quantify the uncertainty in soil transition locations. This paper presents two unique soft-ground tunneling case studies where the results from the geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling are compared to the TBM data and as-encountered ground conditions derived from the actual TBM data. The assessment enhances the confidence in using geostatistics to improve ground awareness for efficient tunnel construction, minimizing different site condition (DSC) claims, and improving decision-making on tunnel projects.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Historically, the control of flotation operations has been viewed by many as an art. Only recently has process measurement and control come to be viewed not as an ?art? but as a very complex and productive science. In recent years, process control applications to flotation plants have been established and already some gains have been reported for several industrial operations using individual stabilizing control loops including level, pulp flow, pulp density, reagent addition rate and pH (Paakinen, 1979; Hales, 1985). The use of process control computers combined with on-line x-ray florescence (XRF) in industrial flotation circuits has made the application of more sophisticated control techniques feasible in the mineral recovery process. In spite of the availability of reliable instrumentation in modern flotation plants, satisfactory control strategies are difficult to develop and implement. Extremely important factors such as changes in ore type, liberation characteristics, flotability, degree of oxidation on particle surfaces, and specific gravity constitute unmeasured disturbances to the process. Most current control systems cannot adapt specifically to such disturbances.

The 29th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Star Pass Resort, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit, and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Chilean Minister of Public Works and former Minister of Mining, Laurence Golborne Riveros will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Golborne Riveros was instrumental in managing the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners in October 2010 and in the coordination/management of the ?townsite? for family members, rescue support and the media. His engineering background and executive management skills made him ideally suited to assist in both a technical and managerial role in this emergency.

"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase the capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont Mining in Nevada was faced with such a need in its carbon-in-leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corp., tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop-in replacement screens using a three-dimensional screen panel. The synthetic pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade its urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing and other scalping applications.In spring 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick’s local area representative, met with Newmont to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the CIL train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, NV. The process was originally designed for about 12+ kt/d (13,000+ stpd) but the throughput has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned. Newmont now requires 14.5 kt/d (16,000 stpd) to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity, and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production.Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing’s oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging, and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and, thus, larger machines, screening media that does not blind or a combination of both.In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick had been working on a revolutionary threedimensional panel that would add nonblinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 in July of 2013. It was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

Computor analysis has opened a new world of information for the mining of resources. This paper is directed at the mining of coal. The same procedures apply to most mining projects. The available facts when evaluated against the variables produce the answers. The project must be carefully analyzed, so that the facts can be organized in a data file. The file can be expanded as additional information is obtained during the entire life of the mine. If the mine is pre-planned, the file will be expanded in an orderly fashion and updated information will be available at all times. The development of a property goes through several phases; Exploration, Economic Analysis, Development, Production, and Reclamation. Each phase is an expansion of the data file. The validity of the answers is directly related to the accuracy and quantity of available data. The basis for a data file is horizontal position, and elevation of each piece of information. A coordinate system and datum are reference for a digital (X, Y and Z) position in a spatial system, a three dimensional digital model of the mine. The current practice is to use the State Plane Coordinate system and elevations as established by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Each state has adopted this system by law. In the event there is litigation, it is an advantage to have the data on the legally recognized system. The control must be expanded so that all data can be assigned a digital position, and planned to fulfill the requirements for all phases of the mining operation. U.S. Government sponsored studies proclaim large reductions in surface mine productivity. Consulting studies place a large share of the blame on increased governmental regulatory activities and on inexperienced, improperly train people. Union rules, which allow indescriminate bidding for job openings, seem to be a major factor causing the lack of experience in spite of elaborate training programs.

Virtual reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced form of computer graphics. The images are generated based on where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR can provide a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. New technology continues to be introduced into the mining industry to meet the productivity needs of coal and noncoal producers. There is also an increased need for more innovative training of mine workers. New technology and equipment designs often affect the basic causes of accidents. For example, the development of cabs and canopies for underground coal-mine equipment has reduced the number of accidents related to roof falls and rib rolls. However, safety-training specialists then had to focus on the machines themselves, because the modifications had the potential for causing "pinch-point" accidents. In fact, although the overall physical demands on mine workers have diminished, there has been an escalation in the concerns about trauma from repetitive physical activity. Thus, health-and-safety training specialists have shifted their atten¬tion to the recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards (Hancock and Hill, 1995). Recognizing that the spatial relationships of a workplace convey more information about hazards when experienced rather than described, trainers agree that simulation is the method of choice. Unfortunately, until recently, simulation systems were either simple software programs that did not come close to portraying the real experience or were complex hardware systems (such as flight simulators) that did, but at a cost of millions of dollars (Fritz, 1991). However, researchers and training specialists are excited about an emerging approach to work-force education based on virtual reality. VR is also described as cyberspace, immersive simulation, artificial reality, telepresence, virtual environment or virtual world (Meyer and Dunn-Roberts, 1992; Peterson, 1992). It represents a group of concurrent advances in computer and interface technologies. They enable an individual to interact in a multisensory way with a computer-generated environment. To achieve this, a typical VR system incorporates a computer that contains the necessary databases for producing realistic images and audio; a head-mounted display (HMD) or screen for viewing the images; and a three-dimensional controller, joystick or data glove for interacting with the computer-generated environment. If virtual reality is to become an effective tool for the safety training of mine workers, its attributes will have to be measured against other forms of delivery. Accordingly, Carr (1992) listed the following areas in which VR should be considered the method of choice: ? When training mistakes would be costly. ? When the necessary environment cannot be experienced in the real world. ? To build interfaces that are sensible and can be manipulated. ? To make training situations really "real." ?To make perceptible the imperceptible.

In 1950 Kaiser Steel Corporation acquired control of the Utah Fuel Company, a pioneer Utah coal concern owning large reserves of high volatile coking coal near Sunnyside, Utah. The mines at Sunnyside have been producing high quality coking coal since the late 1890's. Kaiser Steel acquired the coal deposits at Sunnyside in order to supply the necessary coke for its steel plant at Fontana, California. The Sunnyside coal deposits are made up of two mineable beds, the upper and lower Sunnyside seams. Both seams outcrop along the southward facing escarpment of the Book Cliffs. The coal seams dip under the massive sandstones of the Book Cliffs to the northeast at 5 to 22 pct., with the steepest-part being near the outcrop. Mining at Sunnyside up to 1961 had been carried on with room and pillar methods. The deep cover and rotten roof conditions, along with the need of increased tonnage, required a change of mining technique. Numerous ideas were presented, discussed, and economically analyzed. Several people involved in these discussions, with the aid of W.W. II, had been introduced to the European methods of coal mining, namely the longwall technique. The European mines had long been plagued with near similar conditions as those at Sunnyside, particularly the deep cover problem. The longwall method seemed to be working very well under these conditions, and with the extensive studies given longwalling by the Kaiser Steel mining officials, it was decided to give longwalling a try.

"Early on Jan. 9, 2014, approximately 37,800 L (10,000 gal) of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal and is considered nonhazardous in terms of transportation, storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein and McWhirter, 2014).The spill site was located a little more than 1.6 km (1 mile) upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a "Do Not Use" order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a).With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the "Do Not Use" order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until Jan. 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below the approved level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at sub-ppb concentrations, a fact that undoubtedly added to growing public concern (Rosen et al., 2014; Gallagher et al., 2014). In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until Feb. 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAW, 2014b), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAW, 2014c)."

This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

[One of the major problems in the purchase and sale of coal shipped in lake or ocean going vessels has always been the difficulty in obtaining a true analysis of the shipped coal?s quality because of faulty sampling by manual methods. As long as coal was sampled according to standards set up by ASTM methods designated D 492-48 there generally were no quarrels with the results obtained. However, due to varied weather conditions and because of the large number of cars sampled, there is no assurance that prescribed manual methods of sampling will always be followed. Because of this problem, the organization previously called American Coal Sales Association, now part of the National Coal Association, set up a committee compose of representatives from coal producers, coal shippers and coal consumers to study this sampling problem and to devise, if possible, a means of sampling on the high lift dumpers which could be automated so that a; true sample of the coal as loaded in the railroad car could be obtained.]

To fully utilize a ventilation simulator as a planning and production tool, the network database must keep pace with mining progress. By using AutoCAD's™ attribute-definition function, the branch data and node coordinates can be stored as part of the branch-diagram file and updated with the drawing. Attributes are drawing entities that contain text which can he extracted in a standard spreadsheet format or as an ASCII text file. The data can be subsequently loaded into a ventilation simulator. This paper presents the methodology for using AutoCAD's™ attribute feature in a ventilation simulation format.
