The interaction of xanthate with SO2 in the flotation of sphalerite and chalcopy.ite is discussed. 'The SO depression of sphaledte is due to the decomposition reaction of xanthate by SO2 The decomposition reaction is dependent on the cole ratios of xanthate/SO2, oxygen concentration and pH. Xanthate adsorbs at a faster rate by chalcopyrite than sphalerite. The faster rate of xanthate adsorption by chalcopyrite and the specific action of S02 on the surface of chalcopy.ite facilitate the selective separation of chalcopyrite from sphaledte.

Kaolin clay has a broad range of applications with the paper market representing the largest end-use. Calcined kaolin finds application in paper, paint and plastics primarily for its high brightness and light scattering ability. It is well known as an extender for TiO2. Meta-kaolin possesses a unique set of physical and chemical characteristics finding use in both traditional kaolin/calcined kaolin markets as well as other unique applications. This paper discusses the intricacies of manufacture and the key physical and chemical properties of meta-kaolin. Specific applications and the relationship of the physical/chemical properties to end-use performance are discussed.

INTRODUCTION The scope of mineral finance extends beyond the economic aspects of property evaluation to all of those activities involving acquisition and utilization of funds with an objective to optimize the value of the firm. It must, therefore, en- compass consideration of the overall financial goals of the firm, decisions involving external versus internal growth and domestic versus foreign investments, management of working cap- ital, efforts to minimize the cost of capital, and decisions with regards to the instruments of long- term debt and equity financing. The scope of this section is limited to considerations of special interest to the mineral or petroleum engineer, which include the following aspects of mineral finance: (1) The technical aspects of mineral or coal property or oil and gas reservoir evaluation which provide the basis for estimation and forecasting of revenues and costs. (2) Estimation and forecasting of costs and prices in a inflationary economic environment. (3) Calculation of cash flows which model .. , the investment in minerals, coal or oil, and gas. Such models require assumptions as to the timing of cash flows, escalation of capital and operating costs, base prices, and escalation, the tax regime, royalties, division of profits and the economic aspects of loans. (4) The role of discount rate in the economic analysis of an investment which requires consideration of the opportunity costs of the firm, cost of capital, risk premiums. (5) Risk analysis including application of the concepts of conditional net present value, expected value, and risk preference as well as the application of the techniques of sensitivity and simulation. (6) Selection of application criteria for in- vestment decision making. (7) Capital structure with particular reference to the effect of debt financing. (8) Consideration of sources of funds utilized by the minerals industries. (9) Long-range planning including portfolio analysis. This section is limited to principles, methodologies, and trends in mineral investment, finance, and long-range planning in the United States with a perspective from the year 1984. Consideration of the key concepts is supplemented by case examples of investment risk analysis and financial structure. Important factors affecting mineral investment evaluation during the 1980s include volatile metals prices, cost inflation, and the introduction of techniques requiring the computer and its capacity for improved technical and economic analysis into the hands of those who know most about the industry. The personal computer is replacing the calculator on the desk of the individual analyst and is rapidly becoming a required tool for the study of engineering and economics. Examples of change brought about by the micro-computer include greatly improved techniques of cost estimation, wider application of the computer for project analysis, computer graphics, reserve estimation, geostatistical analysis, mine design and other techniques that capitalize on the ability of the computer to handle

This paper briefly reviews the historical development of the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace Process, which was first applied commercially to the treatment of qarnieritic ores in New Caledonia in the mid-fifties. It describes various technological improvements introduced, since, in industrial plants or developed in pilot facilities where a wide variety of nickel oxide ores has been treated success- fully over the years. Major categories of ores are characterized. The effect of their physical and chemical properties on their performance in the electric furnace is discussed. The relationships between ore composition, ferronickel grade and slag composition are analyzed and their effect on slag and metal tapping temperatures, nickel recovery, and electrode voltage are discussed.

For gold mines, orebody uncertainty is one of the leading causes of differences between planned and actual production. Geostatistical conditional simulations create multiple equally probable orebody block model realizations which are conditional to the current drilling information and demonstrate the sampled grade distributions and spatial statistics. These simulated block models are key inputs for a stochastic evaluation to show the likely range of grades and cash flows to be delivered by a mine plan. The stochastic evaluation outputs can be used to compare different mine plans in terms of expected values and risks to planned grades, production, costs, Net Present Value (NPV) and other plan metrics. For the McLaughlin gold mine, risk profiles are demonstrated to show how different mine, cut-off and stockpile strategies can reduce risk and improve expected value. The strategies considered were effective in improving expected NPV and reducing or eliminating tonnage uncertainty, but the strategies had little impact on reducing the uncertainty of NPV’s or mill grades. The stochastic evaluation process is also used to compare the risk impact of orebody uncertainty against the risk of not achieving planned mining tonnages or vertical advance rates. Risks for plans created with and without stochastic mine plan optimization are also compared.

A prototype automated mapping and spatial information management system has been developed, and illustrates how a powerful map manipulation capability and a comprehensive display system can be combined using both raster and vector mapping: The concept of a mapbase and information retrieval mechanism, query language as well as text and graphical menus, is introduced. The Geographic Information System (GIS), which has been built around a system for storage and retrieval of spatial and textual data, allows interaction with geographic space represented on a displayed map. The prototype is demonstrated using maps and information of an open pit mine.

6.1-SOIL MECHANICS WALTER C. SHERMAN, JR. 6.1.1-DEFINITION Soil mechanics is concerned with the behavior of soils in relation to the design, construction and performance of engineering works. In this context, soils include all uncemented materials, such as, gravels, sands, silts and clays, either naturally or artificially deposited, and, under certain conditions, weakly cemented, badly broken or weathered rocks. Many types of mine wastes have physical properties similar to those of soils and thus are amenable to analysis by the principles of soil mechanics. The principles of soil mechanics are used to solve such problems as the stability of various types of structures with respect to failure of the supporting soils, determination of soil pressures and deformations in the design of foundations and retaining structures, analyses of seepage and under seepage, and stability with respect to sliding of excavated and natural slopes and embankments. 6.1.2--SOIL PROPERTIES Soils are classified on the basis of index properties, such as, particle-size distribution and plasticity characteristics. The Unified Soil Classification System1 used to classify soils for engineering purposes is shown in Table 6-1. Other physical properties important from an engineering standpoint include natural water content, density, permeability, shear strength and compressibility. Physical properties are evaluated on the basis of carefully conducted laboratory tests. Procedures for laboratory testing are presented by Lambe. 2 Soils, either of natural or artificial deposition, are complex three-phase materials consisting of solids, water and gas (usually air or water vapor). One of the most important principles in soil mechanics is based on the concept of effective stress in the soil-water system. A stress, a, applied to a saturated soil is taken partly by the soil particles (effective stress, a'), and partly by the water in the voids (neutral stress or pore water pressure, u,) so that a' = a - u,. Only the effective stress affects the mobilization of frictional resistance between soil particles. In partially saturated soils, the pore-water pressure is negative due to capillary effects. The effective stress relation remains valid for small negative pore pressures, but anomolies arise if the soil is significantly unsaturated. In this case, the pore pressure is commonly assumed as equal to the pore air pressure, u,, so that [ u' = u - u..] 6.1.3--SOIL EXPLORATIONS Soil explorations are carried out by borings or test pits. Hvorslev3 has reviewed procedures and boring requirements, such as, type, depth and spacing employed. In general, soil strata are logged and representative exploratory samples are recovered for classification purposes and for determining the subsurface soil profile, which is constructed utilizing also knowledge of the geology of a site. 15.1 INTRODUCTION The mine development process, as discussed in Chapter 2, is a series of data gathering and analysis steps. As the mine development process proceeds, information about the geology, mineability, and metallurgy of a particular deposit is continually generated, along with environmental information regarding project permitting status. As data are obtained, checkpoint evaluations are typically conducted to determine the economic viability of the particular deposit. Although the project evaluation process was discussed at length in Chapter 2, a brief review of the process is presented here to "set the stage" for the discussion on economic analysis of heap leach projects. Figure 15.1 (MacKenzie, 1980) presents an overview of the sequential process of mine development. Once the deposit is discovered or acquired, an initial delineation program can be undertaken to expand the project's geologic, mining, and metallurgical data base. At the end of this initial program, the direction of the project is evaluated. The company can either abandon the project, postpone it, develop and mine it, or gather additional data in hopes of improving the project's economic viability. If the company continues gathering data, then another decision point and evaluation will be required. This process may continue until the company either decides to postpone the project or develop and mine it. A project may be postponed indefinitely, typically in hopes of improved metals prices. Certain holding costs, such as land or royalty payments, may be associated with postponement. In general, once a company goes through two evaluations, the project is less likely to be abandoned. For this discussion, it is assumed that the company will undertake initial, second, and third delineation programs to gather sufficient geologic, mining, metallurgical , and environmental data to justify a positive production decision from the second or third economic evaluation. The objectives of the first delineation program will be to confirm and expand upon the available information about the deposit. During the second delineation program, development funds should be directed toward identifying the critical project items (i .e., ore reserves, mineralogy, mineable grade, metallurgical recovery, etc.) that must be resolved before making the production decision. This second economic evaluation can be used to determine which metallurgical concept will be applied to the project: heap leach or a traditional agitation-type leach plant. If the proper work has solved key project concerns in the second program, a production decision may be made from that evaluation.

A general model which represents not only batch but also continuous flotation in multi-cell machines is presented. This model considers both the size distribution and the distribution of flotabilities in a size class for valuable mineral particles in the pulp. The general expression is shown to reduce to several previously reported models. In addition, a number of new models are found to arise for different specific assumptions concerning the flotability distribution and/or the size distribution of the particles undergoing flotation. Several of these new models are tested experimentally using laboratory-scale batch and pilot-scale continuous data. Model parameters are estimated from this data and a comparison of calculated recoveries and those experimentally determined are presented. Finally, the influence of the feed rate, aeration rate and valuable mineral content of the feed on the recovery is examined.

The purpose of the panel's examination of coal mining research and development is to explore how the various groups that make up this research community might work together more efficiently and be more productive. The community, as defined here, includes federal and state governments, coal producers, manufacturers, unions, universities, and industry sponsored research organizations. The framework chosen for these discussions consists of brief presentations by the panel members on their views of the proper role and function of the group they represent. The panel members were also asked to highlight the economic, technical and institutional constraints that affect the performance of research and development and the use of the results. Following these presentations, a number of prepared questions will be discussed by the panel, and audience participation is invited. These questions were given several weeks ago to the panel members for their study. Before proceeding with the panel member reports, a brief review of the importance of R&D to the coal mining industry would be helpful to setting the stage for a constructive dialogue. It is appropriate to begin this review by mentioning that there is complete agreement among the research community that the major goals are: Improve health and safety Protect the environment Increase capital and labor productivity Increase resource recovery Since the basic functions of the academic, industrial and government sectors are different, we should expect that the research and development objectives and priorities, roles and responsibilities under each major goal will be different for each research group. The differences do not represent problem areas. However, problems will arise if the objectives are not properly interfaced at the appropriate time. The consequences of railing to understand the need for integrated programs will be the classic result, best described by the phrase --"a technical success but a commercial failure."

In this paper, we present a physiographic classification of gravel deposits, identify some field measures of aggregate quality, and describe sampling strategies for mapping aggregate quality in the Front Range Urban Corridor of Colorado. Gravel occurs in four types of deposits along the Front Range of Colorado: (1) piedmont alluvial fans, (2) high dissected terraces, (3) high (continuous) terraces, and (4) floodplains and low terraces. The four deposit types are the basis for definition of gravel-deposit models, which differ in geologic environment, deposit characteristics, deposit size, environmental impacts of mining, and post-mining use. Of the four types, floodplains and low-terrace deposits have been exploited most for gravel. High terraces also have been mined. Deposits of high dissected terraces and dissected alluvial fans have produced minor amounts of gravel, mostly for use as local fill. Studies to identify useful field measures of aggregate quality and to determine the appropriate scale for sampling were conducted on gravel deposits beneath the flood-plain and low terraces of the South Platte River north of Denver and the Cache la Poudre River between Ft. Collins and Greeley. Gravel deposits of the South Platte were selected for study because they represent the last major resource of gravel for aggregate in the Denver metropolitan area. The Cache la Poudre valley is the primary source of gravel aggregate for rapidly urbanizing areas around Ft. Collins and Greeley. Of all the field measures of gravel quality, the most important is particle size. Various parameters that measure particle size were investigated, but the easiest to determine, and the most useful to the aggregate industry, are measures of the proportion of coarse sizes. Particle size varies widely in gravels of the urban corridor. Gravel lithology, particularly the presence of deleterious particles such as reactive volcanic rocks and decomposed rocks, must be determined to assess aggregate quality. Studies of South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels have not revealed large proportions of deleterious lithologies. Studies of particle shape revealed only small numbers of physically weak shapes in both the South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels. Particle shape does not appear to vary from place to place in the gravels. Rounding, or the ab¬sence of angular corners, may play a role in the tendency of loose gravel to yield under load. South Platte and Cache la Poudre gravels are rounded, and rounding tends to increase upstream. Before the quality of gravel in a valley can be assessed, the stratigraphy of the gravel must be known because it affects sample design. If only a single gravel layer is to be studied, only the thickness of the gravel must be known before sampling. If, however, more than one layer of gravel-distinguished by particle size, sorting, or lithology-is present, sampling must take into account the thickness and distribution of each layer. For example, three gravel layers of different particle size underlie the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte. The tributary Cache la Poudre, on the other hand, contains gravel layers that can be distinguished only locally and vary slightly in particle size. Sampling experiments were conducted on gravel bars in the South Platte River and in gravel pits on the floodplain and low terraces of the South Platte and Cache la Poudre Rivers. Experimental results indicate that, even where sample error is large, regional and stratigraphic variation may be measured if it is large relative to sample error. Using vertical trench samples weighing an average of 40-90 pounds, down-stream decrease in coarse particle size was mapped for Cache la Poudre gravel, and differences among superposed gravel beds were measured for South Platte gravel.

Historically two basic approaches of production sequencing have been formed in the theory of open pit mine design. The first approach implements a technological discretization of the pit space within the ultimate pit outlines where the minimum working width is the limiting technological factor. The second approach uses a pseudo-economic discretization based on the implementation of analytical methods for designing intermediate/ultimate pit outlines and the concept of pit shells generation. The paper offers an elaborate analysis of both approaches used currently for discretization of the geological medium into working benches and modelling the working zone of open pit mine. The analysis is extended with a new vision for unification of the mining systems in open pit mine design under the form of a classification. A comparison of the approaches is provided to illustrate their advantages and disadvantages with regard to the implementation of the principle of waste deferment as one of the main principles of mine planning that exploits the time effect of money.

The ratio of neutralization potential (NP) to acid production (AP) ratio is often employed for predicting acidic discharges from waste rock dumps. The available NP was evaluated in laboratory studies of limestone dissolution in simulated acidic mine water. The available neutralization potential strongly depended on the particle size. Using limestone particles of 114" (6.4 mm) or greater, less than 20% of the total neutralization potential was exhausted at the onset of acid conditions. Apparently, the dissolution of limestone became mass transfer limited. Under mass transfer limitations, the rate of pyrite oxidation may exceed the rate of neutralization by buffering minerals. The implications concerning the controls on limestone dissolution were examined using a geochemical predictive model for sulphide mineral oxidation in waste rock. The results have shown that in case of heterogeneous waste rock piles the NP/AP ratio is a reliable indicator for short-tam predictions only. Kinetic data on the depletion rate of the neutralizing minerals and geochemical modelling suggest that waste rock environments with NP/AP ratios as high as 5.0 may turn acidic in the long term.

The required reclamation of land disturbed by surface coal mining often results in the creation of some oversteepened slopes that are prone to rapid erosion and sediment production. This natural activity on such slopes is not desirable nor allowed under current regulations. Experience has shown that novel approaches must be devised to address the problem. Research conducted on field sites in Missouri has indicated that construction, during the reclamation and grading processes, of a man-made drainage system will control the erosion. The drainage system must replicate or exceed the natural system in terms of drainage density and channel frequency. Basic design considerations are summarized in this paper, and field results are shown.

A deep longwall coal mine was instrumented with a three-dimensional microseismic system in order to help determine the exact strata mechanics associated with the rock failure, redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation from the longwall. Overall, 5,000 well calibrated seismic events were recorded during the mining of the panel. Analysis of these events showed a close correlation between the seismic activity and advance rate, and that the majority of the recorded seismic activity occurs in the immediate area of the advancing longwall face.

Packer test data and tunnel in?ow observations are used to show that the distribution of equivalent hydraulic conductivity obtained for a rock mass from borehole packer testing will be biased if the orientations of the planned tunnel and testing borehole differ. Furthermore, test results show that the distribution of equivalent hydraulic conductivity is different in various geologic sub-units at the same site. The impact on in?ow of the major uncertainties, including conductivity, head and specific yield, is illustrated to be amenable to a combined analysis using Monte Carlo simulation.

The paper deals with the activity program and the preliminary results of a research work commissioned by IReR Research Centre and Regione Lombardia to the Department of Land, Environment and Geotechnologies of Politecnico di Torino. The aim is to define measurement, analysis and control criteria for the emission of chemical and physical pollutants from non-metal mining industries, with particular reference to noise and airborne particulates. Such emissions are related to health risks and annoyance problems, both for the working crews and the neighbouring population, and so, in order to get an effective sustainability of the industry, suitable reduction methods and assessment tools are required. A simple technique for the evaluation and forecasting of both the emission levels and deriving impact has been tested at different mining and quarrying sites, considering their differences in terms of layout and exploitation method, the latter ascribed to a series of main typologies as present in Lombardia region.

The Bethlehem Mines Corp. is a captive mining subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corp. Its coal production is tied to the demands for and production of steel, a situation that has to balance between the following two extreme strategies: (1) either the mines are designed and operated for some optimum production level and the demand fluctuations within the steel corporation are met by supplementary corporate coal sales and purchases, or (2) the mines absorb all the demand fluctuations, regardless of the effects on mine costs. A rational definition of the best strategy between these extremes is, of course, needed but is very difficult to formulate in view of the complexity of the many factors that would have to be included in the analysis. Consequently, rather than setting profit targets for each given mining division and/or individual mine, the practice evolved to set production targets for producing specified tonnages of coking coal for shipments to the ovens located at the corporation's iron and steelmaking plants. This in turn leaves the mines with the dilemma of having to explain demand-related cost-per-ton fluctuations while essentially depriving them of the ability to control profit through tonnage optimization. In the early 1970's, the coal prices rose significantly, while other factors led to sagging productivity in underground coal mining. Thus, the role of Bethlehem's coal operations in the corporate profit picture gained in relative importance. This, in turn, sparked a closer attention to the coal mining cost structure and factors controlling productivity. At the same time, the drastic increase in the capital needed to open a new mine also increased the amount of planning required to minimize risks. All of this called for more well-defined, quantitative operating data. Bethlehem therefore launched, in the early 1970's, a number of innovative steps that, as the future may show, represented pioneering contributions to the growing sophistication of North American underground coal mine planning and management control practices. This case study describes the changes that led to the current implementation of a novel production reporting system at Bethlehem's coal mines. These changes took place in two distinctly different phases. The current system that resulted from the Phase II developments utilizes, of course, experience gained earlier and is expected to be amplified to incorporate more advanced concepts and technology as future experience dictates.
