Recent research conducted by NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, tightly wrapped with many turns, all carrying current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften and become easily damaged. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution, and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor temperature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125 micrometer Graded Index Multimode Optical Fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperature with an accuracy of plus or minus one degree centigrade over a length of 4 km at 1-m intervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted simulating actual mine conditions and provide important data to allow MSHA's Approval and Certification Center to develop approval criteria for cyclically rated reeled machines.

Agrico Chemical Company, as we presently know it, is the result of the coming together of several different fertilizer operations. The Williams Companies, our parent organization, first entered the fertilizer business in 1971, when it acquired the fertilizer operations of the Gulf Oil Company. This gave us, among other things, the manufacturing facility at Donaldsonville, Louisiana. In 1972, The Williams Companies acquired Agrico Chemical Company from Continental Oil Company, bringing in a manufacturing facility and phosphate mines at Pierce Florida. Our Florida Mines are in the region commonly known as the Bone Valley Region of Florida. The majority of the phosphate fertilizer produced in the United States utilizes rock mined in this region. The Donaldsonville Plant was originally built in 1967-68 on the site of the old Faustina Plantation at an approximate cost of $80,000,000. (This plant is commonly referred to as our Faustina Plant.) Until such time as Agrico was acquired from Continental Oil, the Donaldsonville Facility was solely used to upgrade phosphoric acid into finished granular products.

The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, began commercial production of flotation concentrates from the western hemispheres' only primary platinum palladium deposit at Nye, Montana in March 1937. In the fall of 1987 an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelling and oxygen? blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi? refined matte or 'white metal". In the summer of 1990 the production smelter was brought on-line at Columbus, Montana. This paper describes the technology transfer from the pilot to the production smelter. Emphasis is placed on flowsheet development and the scale factors between the test and production furnaces and gas cleaning plants. The metallurgical results of the pilot plant and of the early months of production of the commercial works are also compared.

Demonstrating aquifer restoration is an essential component of regulatory approval needed to mine uranium, copper, and other minerals by in-situ recovery (ISR). A PHREEQC geochemical model provided a useful means of forecasting the time for restoration and predicting future groundwater quality following low pH mining at Strata Energy’s Ross ISR Project in northeast Wyoming. The model simulated groundwater quality at three phases of the process: at the end of mining; during restoration; and post- restoration. The model utilized the one-dimensional reactive transport and dual porosity features of PHREEQC. Mineral surface ion-exchange, dissolution/precipitation reactions, and adsorption processes were simulated to estimate water quality as the pH was shifted from circumneutral to acidic during mining and back to neutral during restoration. The model results showed that cost-effective management of mine water could meet regulatory requirements. Additionally, the model was used to interpret results from a field trial and inform operational decisions. The predictive approach and geochemical understanding developed have application in assessing aquifer restoration for other ISR projects.

The separation and recovery of copper from cyanide solution has been investigated since the early 1900s. The precipitation of copper using sulfide ion was patented in 1911 by Williamson, published by Leaver & Woolf of the USBM in 1931 and Cyanamid in 1960s. The current practice of sulfide precipitation is used in various processes such as “SART" for cyanide regeneration and copper recovery. The precipitation of copper sulfide requires the pH of the clear solution to be in the range of 4-6. The precipitated copper sulfide can be sold to smelters. Alternatively, copper cyanide can be precipitated from clear solutions in the pH range of 2-3. However, selling copper cyanide is challenging because of its cyanide content. Past work has focused on the use of boiling sulfuric acid to convert copper cyanide to copper sulfate as published by Seracini in 1991. This paper describes a simple process to convert copper cyanide to copper oxide using sodium hydroxide at ambient temperatures. The cuprite can be sold to smelters or used as a feed to an electrowinning circuit to produce copper cathodes. The process provides an effective method to recover copper from cyanide solutions with a lower capital requirement.

This paper will describe several modifications to design of con­ventional oxide gold heap leaching. They are targeted at reduc­ing costs and simplifying heap operations. These modifications were conceptualized during consulting work on over 90 differ­ent heap leaches. In 1995, a unique opportunity arose to imme­diately apply all of these design concepts to the permitting and construction of a new facility at the American Girl Mine in southeastern California. American Girl Mine has operated since 1987. In April 1995, the mine faced a situation with grave consequences for cash flow. Approval for mining of a new ore zone, Oro Cruz, had just been granted, after lengthy delays by California regula­tors. All existing pad space would be filled by October. Only 6 months were available, and new pad siting and design were still undecided. Permitting of a new pad had not begun. Options were quickly reviewed. A strong criteria for pad site selection and design was ease of permitting. There was also a strong desire to install a system that would achieve better met­allurgical recovery and reduced operating costs, compared to previous heaps at this mine. One site offered the best chance for rapid permitting. It was the site of the original 1987-90 heap leach. This already dis­turbed ground contained 1.6 million tons of heaped ore. The old heap had just completed detoxification and was about to be signed off as a Group C waste, ready for reclamation. Instead of recontouring and revegetating the old heap, which the reclamation plan anticipated, we offered BLM and the County something even better. We proposed to off-load much of the detoxed old heap, and reuse the space. The off-loaded material would be back-filled into the original open pit, imme­diately adjacent. While the footprint of the proposed new pad was much larger, the reuse of disturbed ground, and backfilling of the open pit, had very strong appeal to the regulators. Our permitting strategy included the technical design of the proposed new facility. Many of the new design details also appealed to the regulators, particularly the "zero active ponds" concept.

The problem of increasing underground mine ventilation efficiency is still of top priority. The complication of geological conditions with the depth of underground mining processes and reinforcement of requirements to technological and ecological safety are extorting the necessity of solving this complex problem with using of new information technologies. There exist different approaches to the ventilation problem. One of them, which the authors adhere to, is based on the concept of monitoring (under special mining and geological conditions-automatic control) of mining atmosphere and operative re-distribution of underground mining air among consumer , in accordance with the criterion of optimality [ 1.3 1. ] The set of tasks which should be decided in the frame of con- crete ventilation system depends on the peculiarities of deposit, technological schemes and so on. Nevertheless, some ventilation tasks such as: defining of ventilation network parameters; finding of dependence between these parametrs; operative redistribution of air streems, could be interpreted as universal ones. Main aspects of practical solving of different ventilation problems and their classification were investigated and considered in detail before [I ,2 ]. Some years ago we have began our investigations to develope quite simple and effective methods for decision of ventilation tasks on the base of neural network technology. It is well known that ventilation net, formed by various mine workings, is the main component of underground mining ventilation system. In general, network air distribution may be described by some functional F(Q,R,H), where Q- is a vector of air consumptions; H- is a vector of depressions; R- is a vector of airdynamic resistences. (Q,R,H) - are the informative entities , characterising every branch of the net. There exist some fundamental tasks which should be decided during the process of control of mining ventilation: calculating of natural air distribution Q = Q,{R, H,}, or Q = Q2(R, Q?}, where H, - is the maximal depression of the ventilation net, Q, - is the air consumption in the ventilation shaft; identifying of airdynamic resistance for some branches on the base either of air-depression removal or operative monitoring: [ ]

The win theme of this session is Unique Material Handing Systems. The theme was selected because of two major factors. 1. Accomplishments of unique character manage to attract interest regardless of their age. 2. There is much to be learned from pioneering efforts of the past as they are the stepping stones to technological development. Thus, 2-1/2 years after completion, the engineering feat of Oroville Dam still looms large let us take a close look at this project to see what made it unique. To begin with, it established a number of firsts: At 770 feet it was the highest earth fill dam in the world. At $121 million dollars, it was the largest ever United States construction project (Civil). At 80 million cubic yards it had the largest earth volume of any dam in the world. The extensive use of belt conveyors for this application had never before been tried. The use of a high capacity bucket wheel-excavator with shiftable belt conveyors had never before been utilized as a con¬tractor's tool. The principal of the "integral train" was applied most effectively whereby up to 220,000 tons of material-was transported daily some 14 miles. To achieve optimum economics a number of technical breakthroughs were necessary. The suppliers of major commercial components worked hand-in-hand with system engineers to develop new machinery necessary for the highly mobile characteristics of the systems, viz., single pulley drives delivering 2000 horsepower, 1000 horsepower right-angle shaft-mounted reducers, across the line starting of 1000 horsepower squirrel cage motors, 10 miles of steel chord conveyor belts with belt tensions up to 150,000 pounds, aircraft-type disc brakes, hydraulic take-ups, train loading at a rate of 25,000 tons per hour, automatic train indexing for rotary dumping at 10,000 tons per hour, roll-over car dumping without uncoupling cars, shifting 7500 ft. long conveyors up to 300 feet laterally without disassembly. These are some of the superlatives that have made the Oroville Dam project unique. The measure of its success is demonstrated by the results.

A quick glance at a-portion of the title of this discussion -'Rolling With The Punch" may immediately lead you to assume that I am about to expound on the so-called manly art of self-defense. So that you will not have been misled entirely we will devote our considerations to a far more important art and if I may, I should like to begin by quoting Vincent Van Gogh. According to a literal translation the artist in describing one of his famous paintings said "these peasants are eating their potatoes with those very hands that dug them from the earth' and put them in the dish". Vincent Van Gogh may not have realized at that time, that he could likewise have been describing what is probably one of the oldest of all arts - the art of Material Handling - an art that man with the aid of science has tried to improve since the beginning of time.

At Tahawus, New York, National Lead Company operates the MacIntyre Development, This operation produces 10,600 long tons of ore per day for crushing, 8,000 tons for grinding and processing, of which 2,000 tons per day reports as tailing for disposal in an impounded tailing storage area. With the change in location of mining operations at the mine of National Lead Company, a change in the area for tailing disposal by gravity became necessary, This called for the diversion of tailing from near the proposed mining area to areas more favorable for long term storage by gravity. In order to avail the operation of maximum storage for the future, a uniform minimum grade launder was proposed with a minimum velocity and maximum outfall at the discharge. Disposal of the gravity and flotation tailing was formerly accomplished in open ditch from the concentrator at a grade of 1.5 percent. It was desirable to design the new launder at grades less than this for the greater storage elevation.

Solid state reduction of roast movat chromite ore with carbon was carried out as a function of C/FeO ratio and temperature in the range 800°C to 900°C by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). A two stage mechanism, (1) the reduction of FeO present in Roast Movat with carbon monoxide; and (2) the regeneration of CO by the oxidation of carbon with CO2 was proposed. The rate controlling step is the carbon oxidation reaction. A kinetic equation, that of random nucleation, was proposed. The activation energy for the reduction was determined to be 55800 J/mole and is compared to those activation energies determined for other chromite ores.

INTRODUCTION The most serious occupational radiation episode in U.S. history was the exposure of uranium miners to radon daughters in the 1945-1968 time period. Although the maximum permissible dose at that time was 12 WLM (working level months) per year, average exposures were several times that figure, and ten times higher exposures were not uncommon. Starting in the early 1960s, mounting epidemiological evidence appeared for an excess incidence of lung cancer among these miners; up to 1974, there was an excess of 134 cases (159 observed vs 25 expected) among the 4000 in the group under study (NAS-1980). When this excess became apparent, the Federal Government took jurisdiction, greatly tightened enforcement, and in 1969 lowered the maximum permissible exposure to 4 WLM per year. These standards were met largely by a great improvement in ventilation. As a result of these measures, average miner exposures were reduced 5-fold from 1965 to 1968 and by another factor of 3 by 1970. In 1978, the 4 WLM/year maximum permissible exposure was exceeded by only 37 of 7500 underground miners, for only 16 wars it exceeded by more than 25%, and for only 8 was it exceeded by 502 (AIF-1980). The average exposures to the various groups are listed in Table 1. We see that the average exposure for all miners was 1.03 WLM, and for those who worked essentially full time underground it was 1.45 WLM. For purpose of later discussion, it will be convenient to choose a single value for average exposures. In view of the fact that employment situations and job categories are bound to vary over a lifetime of work, we take this to be 1.3 WLM/year. The purpose of this paper is not to dwell on history, but rather to address the question of whether or not this present situation is satisfactory. This question was considered recently by a study group under the auspices of National Institue of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH-1980) and it answered the question in the negative, concluding that the maximum permissible exposure should be substantially reduced. However, their arguments were incomplete and were lacking in perspective. The principal thrust of this paper is to provide some of the material overlooked. RISK TO URANIUM MINERS FROM RADON EXPOSURE In order to quantify the risk to uranium miners under present working conditions, it is first necessary to estimate the risk of lung cancer per WLM of exposure. The most straightforward way of doing this is to use the data on the group of uranium miners under study. These are listed in Table 2 for 8 exposure ranges and for the total group (NAS-1980). If all data are given equal weight, the risk is seen to be 3.5 x 10-6 per year per WLM. Much can be said in favor of using this value for the risk as dose independent; it is within one standard deviation (SD) of the observations in 5 of the 8 dose categories (as expected from the definition of SD), and within 2 SD for all 8, and for the three cases differing from the mean by more than one SD, two are above and one is below. However, the uranium miner exposures in the present situation will be far below those covered in Table 2, so it is worth considering the possibility that the risk differs from this at low doses. From the last column of Table 2 we see that the experience from all exposures below 600 WLM indicates a risk higher than the mean for the entire group by more than two standard deviations (the value 600 WLM in this comparison was deliberately chosen to maximize this deviation; for exposures below 360 WLM and 840 WLM, the excess is only 1.0 and 1.6 standard deviations respectively). In view of this tendency for the risk to be higher at lower dose, we will take the risk to be 5.0 x 10-6 per year per WLM in what we will refer to as model A. Slurry technology developed for the marine transport of mineral commodities has been increasingly applied to on-shore slurry transport systems. Reclaim of mineral concentrates, sand tailings for mine backfill and various industrial minerals from storage tanks or ponds normally require a slurry of high density at constant flow rates to improve process performance and to reduce handling costs. An efficient system must accomplish this at minimum capital costs with maximum reliability. Continuing improvements in equipment design to improve repulping efficiency and their application are discussed.

In this part of the two-part paper we discuss briefly the adaptation of the comminution model to describe the observed behavior of an industrial grinding circuit. Although reported verification of comminution models for continuous systems is limited, some interesting work has been reported 1,2 recently. The data acquisition and modeling efforts are described first, followed by discussion of some of the simulation results. Observations pertinent to steady-state operation are presented followed by a description of the application of a dynamic model of the grinding circuit for synthesis and evaluation of grinding-circuit control. The pilot-scale work indicated the comminution model should be capable of describing an industrial size-reduction process. Recognizing the broad utility of a process model based on first- principles, the Industrial Nucleonics Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, embarked on a joint program with the Duval Corporation of Tucson, Arizona, to evaluate the industrial applicability of the models described in Part I. This program was conducted in a grinding circuit, which included a rod mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 16 feet long and a ball mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 14 feet long, at Duval Corporation's Esperanza property3. The rod mill was operated in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with cyclone classifiers.

The somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is in most mines today still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners, as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. Figure No. I illustrates the point at which shuttle car haulage distance determines unit productivity rather than the productive capacity of the miner. Continuous mining is never realized. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Company working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form a unbroken link, at all times, between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor, and an extensible panel conveyor. The following areas of discussion will be covered during the review of this development. I. "This paper presents a numerical study regarding the loads, and the corresponding damage, taken by the primary and secondary lining of a tunnel built in cemented fine-grained stiff soils. This study aims at establishing more rational design criteria that take into account explicity the lining performance. A 3.5 km long tunnel to be built in a densely populated northwest area of Mexico City, was considered as case study. Series of three-dimensional finite difference models, developed with FLAC3D, were used to simulate the tunnel construction, and to compute the ground settlements, internal forces, bending moments, and displacements acting both on the primary and secondary tunnel linings. Interaction diagrams were used to study the lining performance. Several advancement lengths, and tunnel covers were considered to establish their impact on the loads transferred to the tunnel lining. A practice-oriented damage criterion for tunnels was proposed based on the interaction diagram analysis. INTRODUCTION Lining performance during conventional tunnelling, CT, as defined by the International Tunnel Association, ITA (ITA 2009) is strongly affected by the construction procedure. Special attention must be taken in cemented fine-grained materials, such as those found in the northeast portion of Mexico City, due to the potential of fragile failure (i.e. the soil fails suddenly without important deformation) that these soils may exhibit. During CT, it is assumed that the ground strength contributes to the stability of the excavation, as long as the lining is built correctly. It is common practice to consider two structures, which together form the tunnel support: 1) A primary lining, which is a flexible support, which allows excavation walls to deform to mobilize part of its shear strength, and thus contributes to the tunnel self-stability, and 2) A secondary lining. Commonly, the primary lining consists of several layers of shotcrete. In this case the installation method guarantees perfect contact between the lining and the excavation perimeter. The secondary lining, if required, is used to withstand the load conditions in the long term and also has an esthetic function. This paper presents a numerical study aimed at establishing a performance damage criterion for the primary and secondary lining design in cemented fine-grained stiff soils. Due to the lack of data, the strength and deformation parameters were established through empirically-derived relationships. Three-dimensional finite difference models were developed to simulate the tunnel construction, and compute ground settlements, internal forces, bending moments and displacements acting both on the primary and secondary tunnel linings. Interaction diagrams, along with a damage criterion were used to study the lining performance. From the results gathered insight was gained regarding tunnel lining performance during CT."

The Devonian salt basin, which contains the Saskatchewan Potash deposits, extends from just east of the foothills in Alberta, north as far as the Peace River area, across Saskatchewan and into Manitoba as far east as Range 10 west of the First Meridian and south into Montana and North Dakota. The basin is closed everywhere except to the northwest. The known potash deposits are confined almost entirely to the Province of Saskatchewan, with the exception of a small area in western Manitoba bordering the Saskatchewan boundary. The following discussion will concern only the Saskatchewan part of the basin. The evaporite series in the basin is defined as the Prairie Evaporite Formation of the Elk Point Group, of Middle Devonian age. Recent work done by potassium-argon dating methods has indicated an Upper Middle Devonian (Givetian) age of from 265 to 347 million years for the potash. The Elk Point Group consists in ascending order of the Ashern, Winnipegosis and Prairie Evaporite Formations. The Ashern formation, sometimes called the Third Red Bed, consists of dolomitic shales or shaly dolomites. The Winnipegosis is a reef type dolomite, usually with good porosity, and in many cases oil-staining, although to date no production has been obtained. The Prairie Evaporite formation consists of anhydrite overlain by halite and finally, in Saskatchewan, by the potash beds. In almost all wells which have been cored for potash the lowest potash bed is underlain by one or two bands of anhydrtte, which are used as marker horizons. Cores from a few wells which cored to the bottom of the salt series have shown flecks of potash throughout the halite.

In my experience, nothing helps me better to get off to a good start in preparing a paper or a talk than a copious consultation with a comprehensive dictionary. I also feel defining the perimeters of a particular subject is helpful to the listener and reader. Sometimes thus precisely defining even the most common of words is helpful. Our general topic this morning as all of you know is "Transportation of Industrial Minerals." The definition of transportation given by the dictionary which I think is appropriate here is: "Systems and modes of conveyance of persons or goods from place to place." Our preceding panelists have outlined for you the state of the art inso¬far as systems and modes of conveyance from place to place are concerned today via rail, water and motor. My assignment is somewhat different as indicated by my topic, "The Traffic Manager in an Industrial Minerals Operation."

For grinding Portland Cement, the power consumption accounts for some 35 % of the total consumption of electrical energy for producing cement, counting right from the quarry to the packing plant. It is therefore for very good reason that great efforts during the past years have been put into making cement grinding more efficient, thereby saving power. In this paper three ways of reducing the consumption of electrical energy will be described, namely precrushing in the high pressure FLS-Köppern roller press, the introduction of a new design of COMBIDAN diaphragm in ball mills and the separation of mill discharge in the newly developed high efficient; separator SEPAX from F. L. Smidth.
