The structure and occurrence of nickeliferous laterite profiles are described and explained in terms of mineral solubility and drainage conditions. Complete profiles, from top to bottom, include: limonite zone; nontronite or silica zone; and saprolite zone. The middle zone is present only where drainage is sufficiently slow to allow saturation conditions to build up with resulting quartz or smectite precipitation. This precipitation may occur in any climate at a water table or in tropical climates with a long dry season. The degree of serpentinization of the laterite parent rock is important in determining the nature of the saprolite zone. Unserpentinized peridotite produces saprolite ores with hard residual rock cores, nontronitic or amorphous saprolitic rims, and fracture fillings of garnierite and quartz. Ser-pentinites yield relatively homogeneous serpentine saprolite, with minimal quartz or garnierite.

An integrated statistical-geostatistical modelling of gold exploration data of Gurahar Pahar prospect of Mahakoshal greenstone belt in Central India has been attempted. Statistical modelling of gold accumulation and width reveal a positively skewed 2-parameter lognormal distribution fit with an estimate of mean gold as 0.84 gram/tonne. Geostatistical modelling provided a spherical semi-variogram function fit with mean kriged estimate and mean kriging variance of gold as 0.76 gram/tonne and 0.23 (gram/tonne)2 -respectively. Ore inventory and grade-tonnage relationships for a selected part provided an estimate of 3,36,000 tomes of ore with an average gold of 0.76 gram/tonne at 0.5 gram/tonne cutoff grade.

The Henderson molybdenum mine, near Empire, CO, has operated since 1976 using a panel caving process and a rail haulage transportation system. After two decades of service, the rail haulage system required a substantial capital expenditure to improve operations. The timing for this worked well because Henderson was able to combine this capital need into a mine plan that addressed process bottlenecks and current mining practices as a new production level was designed and developed. This process was a logical step, following an equipment upgrade program, and became known as the Henderson 2000 project. One of the key components of Henderson 2000 is a new ore transportation system. Throughout Henderson's life, the bottleneck has been the rail haulage system. Henderson staff evaluated several transportation alternatives and decided on a truck haulage configuration feeding an underground crusher and conveyor system. This configuration will eliminate the haulage bottleneck and will allow the mine to increase capacity. The installation of this system will be completed by the year 2000. The second key component of Henderson 2000 is the development of a new 7175 production level to extract the lower reserves of the ore body. Henderson staff benchmarked other caving operations and compared their mining practices to Henderson's basic mining guidelines. It became apparent that Henderson's practices could become more efficient, particularly in the areas of drawpoint spacing and column heights. These concepts were incorporated into the layouts

Few factors are as important as fluctuations in aggregate economic activity and exchange rates in determining the profitability of mineral investments. Macroeconamic theory explains how the two factors are interconnected in today's world and in tomorrow's. We can use macro¬economic theory to lessen some of the risks in mineral investments. And in the current state of the world the risks are high. The above paragraph summarizes our argument. Our goal in this paper is to examine the nature of contemporary business cycles so as to explain their implications for the metal industries, particularly the implications for capacity. Thus, our first section examines the workings, causes, and history of the recent economic fluc¬tuations. In doing so we must understand how current world economy is interconnected, that is, how economic events in one country are trans¬mitted to the rest of the world. Our view is that governments and central banks are key actors in the creating of economic fluctuations. Then, in section two, we work out the implications of section one for the metal industries focussing on comparative advantage, trade, and capacity decisions. Over the last fifteen years the world economic system has had slow overall economic growth and has had strangely unpleasant recessions. While future business cycle will not repeat the de¬tailed pattern we have seen, there will be similarities. The similarities need to be under¬stood before investment occurs. The slow growth in the world economy since the early 1970s has aggravated the problems from business cycles, created its own problems, and has partially hidden the effects of other events. Major realignments of currencies are likely to take place over a business cycle. The nature of the causes of the cycle will determine the direc¬tion of change in the exchange rates. For example, whether a USA recession will be accompanied by a weaker or a stronger dollar will be determined by the cause of the recession. The realignment of currencies over a business cycle leads to a realignment of comparative advantage in the metal industries. Thus, not only will world metal consumption vary over the business cycle but the impact on various countries' metals industries will differ consi¬derably. Competitiveness often depends more on the value of the dollar than it does on inherent efficiency and wage rates. Capacity decisions are inherently riskier due to the country specific nature of exchange rate risk. A realignment of currencies changes the pattern of trade if and only if the country with the cheaper currency also has idle capacity. The importance of our topic is indicated by Table 1 which shows the impact of cyclical and exchange rate shocks on the USA metal industry. I. INTRODUCTION Lawyers are a cautious breed; and it might be expected that a paper concerning a broad and complex area of legal regulation, prepared by lawyers for presentation to a predominantly non-legal audience, would commence with several caveats. Ours are the following: First, we have written a broad (and, in some instances, simplified) overview of the regulatory system and of some of the more important requirements generally applicable to uranium mine and mill wastes in the United States. Our paper is not a legal opinion setting forth all of the governmental requirements that would have to be met by any particular mine or mill. Similarly, we do not imply that the requirements we mention are necessarily applicable to each and every mine and mill in the country; depending on the facts, some of the requirements may be inapplicable or avoidable through exemption or variance proceedings. Compliance decisions and strategies for particular facilities must be considered on a site-specific basis. Second, we have undertaken merely to describe the regulatory framework and some of the generally "applicable" requirements which have been promulgated and proposed by administrative agencies. We express no opinion on whether, under the U.S. Constitution and statutes, the existing and proposed agency regulations are valid in general or as applied to any particular mining or milling operation. There are, of course, procedures for judicial review of agency action; and newly promulgated environmental regulations have frequently been challenged, with varying degrees of success, before the courts. For us even to begin to consider such issues would expand an already forbiddingly long paper to totally unmanageable proportions. Third, in light of the subject of this Conference we have limited our paper to the legal framework and requirements applicable to uranium mine and mill "wastes" -- primarily mine overburden and waste rock and mill tailings (including waste tailings solution). We treat operating discharges (e.g., emissions from yellowcake drying) only peripherally. Fourth and finally, it is important to note that this paper, at least in so far as it concerns the specific requirements of particular regulations, will likely soon be out of date in some important respects. Concrete pipes and small boxes have been installed by the jacking method. This paper will describe a recent project were large concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. This project is in the city of Boston, MA. By now everyone in the USA knows something about this project. The project official name is The Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T). This is the biggest public work project in the USA right now, with an estimated construction cost of 14 billions. The main objective of the CA/T project is to replace an existing artery built in the 1950s to increase capacity and safety. One section of the new artery will cross under several railroad tracks near the South Station. To construct the section of the new artery under these tracks, big concrete boxes were installed by the jacking method. The jacking method can be used to install pipes, small concrete boxes, and the CA/T project has demonstrated that big concrete road tunnel boxes can be installed by jacking.

"A numerical modeling was conducted to describe the behavior of overlying strata on the longwall top coal caving face for exploitation of a 16.8 m thick coal seam. Three typical structural models, including the Cantilever Structure (CS), Lower Cantilever and Upper Hinged Arch Structure (LC&UHA), and Lower Arch and Upper Voussoir Beam (LA&UVB), were developed. Based on mechanical analysis of the different structures of the key strata, and considering the behaviors of the broken igneous rock strata, a method was proposed and applied to estimate the structures of the overburden strata. The results had been verified by a field micro-seismic monitoring test. The paper provides a foundational method to determine the shield loadings for the top coal caving longwall face.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top coal caving (LTCC) is a highly productive underground mining technology which has been widely applied to the exploitation of the thick coal seams in China and other countries due to its high efficiency (Ju and Xu, 2013; Ju, Xu, and Wang, 2011; Liu et al., 2009). In recent years, a large amount of research on mining pressure forecast, strata control, and mechanical equipment improvement of the LTCC technology has been carried out, which greatly advances the field application of the technology (Liu et al., 2009; Yu, 2016; Dou et al., 2014; Feng et al., 2011; Chen and Li, 2011; Yin, Yan, and An, 2008). In 2006, the LTCC technology was first applied to the exploitation in a 20 m thick coal seam at the Tashan Coal Mine in China (Yan et al., 2011). Ten years of mining at the Tashan Coal Mine has highlighted the importance of the support management in controlling the roof strata on the extra-thick LTCC face. The mining pressure is closely related to the structural features of the overlying strata and its movement laws (Yu, 2016; Dou et al., 2014; Feng et al., 2011). However, the distributions of three zones—caving zone, fracture zone, and deformation zone—on the fully mechanized caving longwalls changed significantly with the increase in thickness of the coal seam (Chen and Li, 2011). The behavior changes of the roof strata led to abnormal pressure in the mining face and resulted in the difficulty of surrounding rock control (Yin, Yan, and An, 2008; Liu et al., 2009; Yan et al., 2011; Gong and Jin, 2008). Therefore, the theoretical research focused on the behavior of overlying strata to reveal the laws of mining pressure has important theoretical significance and practical value.Many classical studies (Qian and Shi, 2003; Feng, 2010; Yu, 2015; Yu, Yan, and Liu, 2012) had been done to describe the behavior of overlying strata in the mining process. It has also been reported that magma intrusion causes an important effect on the surrounding rock, coal, and methane (Wang et al., 2005; Liu et al., 2007). On the one hand, the property and structure of the coal seam was obviously changed by the magma intrusion and resulted in a potential danger of a gas outburst during the mining process (Chen et al., 2012; Wang et al., 2014). On the other hand, the hard igneous strata and the joints occurred with the magma cooled, causing an abnormal behavior of overlying strata and resulting in a series of dynamic disasters during mining (Xuan, Xu, and Lu, 2014; Lu et al., 2016). In fact, many coal fields in China are intruded by igneous sill, including the Datong, Shuozhou, Huainan, and Xuzhou coal fields (Chen et al., 2014; Wu, 2011). The 3–5 coal seam at Tashan Coal Mine in Datong coal field is very thick and is intruded by a large area of layered lamprophyre rock. Face falls and shield failures occurred frequently during the face retreat."

In tunneling through water-bearing formations, the expense of controlling the water can have a major impact on overall project cost. The author has seen the cost of an eight-foot, finished sewer tunnel rise from under $500 per foot to over $1,000 when a water problem, anticipated as modest, became severe. There is need for greater professionalism in the approach to groundwater control. The days of the forked stick should be behind us. The basic technology exists. Its application is not yet widespread. This paper discusses predrainage; that is, the lowering of water in advance of tunnel excavation. Both free air and compressed air tunnels are considered. Examples from recent tunnel projects are described. SPECIAL NATURE OF TUNNEL DEWATERING Tunneling is unlike other excavations below the water table in a number of significant ways. The tunnel excavation is always on the critical path; if production slows or stops, there is no other work for the heading crews, no other work to carry the cost of service crews and job overhead. In January 1992, the Office of the US Trade Representative announced that the People's Republic of China had agreed to protect US intellectual property, including computer software, sound recordings, agrichemicals and pharmaceuticals. Under the agreement, China will make significant improvements in its patent, copyright and trade-secret laws. Ambassador Carla A. Hills, the US trade representative, said "this agreement should create significant opportunities for US firms interested in marketing high valued-added products to China." Principal beneficiaries will include the agrichemical and computer industries, as well as pharmaceutical, entertainment. The agreement will safeguard these industries' intellectual property, stimulating new exports to China and helping to generate additional growth in the US. Refractory grade bauxite was included in the mineral category of the $1.5 billion of Chinese products on which the US government threatened to impose an immediate 100% trade tariff. Refractory bauxite is available from Guyana and Brazil at higher cost and in different grades. However, refractory brick manufacturers would have had little choice but to pass on the costs to their consumers. Although the United States and China are separated by political ideology and internal governing structures, this agreement recognizes the importance of a $19 billion trading relationship. Consequently, the renewal of China's most favored-nation trading status in the US congress in -June 1992 was all but assured. Many US companies doing business in China and Hong Kong have been quietly increasing their investments since 1989. These companies can now concentrate on developing sales to the domestic Chinese market. This market is expected to surpass 1.2 billion people in 1995 and approach 1.3 billion by the end of the century.

Sodium is a silver-colored metal that is so unstable that it reacts violently in the presence of water, and chlorine is a greenish-colored gas that is dangerous and lethal. Yet the combination of these two elements forms sodium chloride, commonly known as salt, which is a white-colored compound essential to life itself. Salt is perhaps the only mineral in the world that is used virtually by every human being in every country. Although its importance has diminished over time, salt has had a profound influence on history. Sources of salt have determined the location of cities, such as Salzburg, Austria, Salzgitter, Germany, Salt Lake City, UT, and Saltville, VA. Populations have migrated in search of salt, and wars have been fought to obtain or to protect it. Although there is no written record of when prehistoric man first discovered salt, he probably instantly appreciated its unique and distinctive taste and sought more of it. He noticed animals were attracted to salt springs and salt licks, where they satisfied their innate cravings. Man used this knowledge to hunt for food; where he found the salt, he would find the animals. Because prehistoric man was not aware of his physiologic need for salt, he automatically received his salt requirements from the meat of the animals he ate. A Mesopotamian tale tells of a wounded pig that ran into the ocean and drowned. After being recovered from the ocean, where it was saturated in the salt brine, the pork was found to taste better than unsalted meat. It was not until man graduated from a nomadic to an agricultural society when he introduced vegetables and cereals into his diet that he realized he needed additional supplements of salt. The Sumerians ate salted meat and used salt to preserve food about 3500 BC. In approximately 1000 BC, the Trojans learned to use salt for preserving fish. The maritime civilizations, such as that of the Phoenicians, engaged in an extensive salt trade throughout the Mediterranean. Many superstitions, customs, and traditions surround the religious, social, economic, and political aspects of civilization. Although some commodities have provided the basis of some ageless metaphors and cliches (i.e., heart of gold, strong as steel, etc.), none are more commonly used than those pertaining to salt. Being "the salt of the earth" referred to a person's worthiness, as referenced in Matthew 5:13 of the Bible. Someone "not worth his salt" reportedly was used in ancient Greece in bartering salt for slaves. When a laborer was worth his salt, he was paid a salary (sal is Latin for salt), a term still in use today that dates back to Roman times when part of a soldier's pay was salt rations. Fearing those around him, the Roman leader Pompey was known to add a grain of salt to his drinks as a supposed antidote to poison. Hence, "taking it with a grain of salt'' is to regard something with suspicion. The earliest known record of salt production was in China about 2000 BC when Emperor Yu decreed that salt had to be supplied to the court as a tribute. Because salt was a commodity that had universal demand, governments often intervened to control salt production and distribution to generate revenue for major national projects. State-run salt monopolies were common in history, such as in Rome about 506 BC. Revenue was also derived from taxes levied on salt sales. The word gabelle refers to the direct salt tax used in France. This tax was so despised that it was a major cause of the French Revolution. Although the tax was repealed in 1790, it was reinstated in 1805 to raise revenue for war. France continued to used the gabelle until 1945. Salt making was an important economic activity in many areas of the world. Archaeological evidence indicates that salt was quarried from hills near the Dead Sea before the Bronze Age. At Hallstatt in the eastern Alps of Austria, rock salt was mined as early as 1400 BC. Solar salt was being produced in the northern Yucatan peninsula by the Mayan civilization from about 50 BC to AD 300. Other than the prehistoric use of salt in the southwestern part of the United States by the Native Americans, the first production of salt by American colonists began in June 1614 on Smith's Island, VA, seven years after the founding of the Jamestown colony. The short-lived activity was in response to the high price of salt being charged by ship's captains who brought salt over as ballast from England. Although Nathaniel Loomis is credited with starting the first commercial inland salt production in the United States at Onondaga Lake in New York in 1790, salt had been made by individuals for private use years earlier. Indians had long known of the salt springs in the Kanawha Valley of Virginia (now known as West Virginia). In 1755, Mary Ingles, a white settler, was kidnapped by Indians and was forced to make salt from the saline springs. After her escape, she told other settlers how to make salt. At Saltville, VA, Arthur Campbell began making salt in 1782 by boiling brine obtained from salt springs. In 1799, William King sank a shaft about 3 m in diameter down about 61 m to the underlying Saltville salt deposits. The shaft flooded before he could extract any rock salt; however, King has the distinction of digging the shaft of the first salt mine in the United States. Fig. 1 shows the King site as it appears today in Saltville, VA. Production of brine from the shaft continued until 1892. Settlers moved into the Kanawha Valley in 1785, but it wasn't until 1806 that Elisha Brooks established the first commercial salt works in Kanawha.

Phosphate is one of the most important minerals in our world today. It contains the life-giving element of phosphorus, which is essential to the growth of every living cell in plant, animal, and man. This vital mineral is found in twenty-three states of the United States; however, for more than 70 years, Florida has led the nation in phosphate-production and now produces 70% of the requirements of this country. Since the early 1880% when rich phosphate deposits were accidentally discovered in a river-bed in Central Florida, the industry has developed into a multi-million-dollar operation. Phosphate mining began in Florida in 1887 with very crude methods and equipment. The original process was necessarily slow and tedious, resulting in total production of 3000 tons in 1888. Progress was made in improved mining operations, and by 1894. Florida had grabbed the lead as the nation?s largest phosphate-producing area, and is still in the top position.

The Study concerns the estimation of fair market value (FMV) of non-producing mineral rights. Two approaches to value are used and the values determined by each are compared. The Study area environment is unusual. The tectonics is visible on surface rocks throughout much of the study area. The effect on mineral values in the exposed areas has been compared to areas where the tectonics is not visible.

The key to concentrator automation is practical means for obtaining continuous assay data from concentrator streams. The technique most successfully used is x-ray fluorescence analysis. The practical reality of on-stream x-ray analysis has been achieved through effort over the past twenty years, marked by an occasional breakthrough, but more typically a step-by-step development to which many individuals and organizations have contributed. The net result of this progress is the present capability to install on-stream x-ray analyzer systems on a turn-key basis. It is now possible to provide all components of an x-ray analysis system as a completely engineered unit which can be put into immediate use, minimizing needs for specialized application know- ledge to benefit from continuous assaying in process control. The economic factors which influence the choice of system and limitations of the x-ray fluorescence technique for slurry analysis are reviewed.

"SUMMARY Injection grouting in rock around tunnels is used to reduce or stop water inflow. Little is known about the distribution of pressure within the rock mass during and after grouting. Instrumentation was developed to record pressure at the back of the packers inside the rock mass during injection grouting in order to improve our understanding of the process. Using this equipment measurements inside multiple injection holes during injection pumping have been made during several rounds of injection grouting in a tunnel. The data has been compared to the data recorded on the grout pumping rig and analysed to gain an understanding of the behaviour of grout injection process in the rock mass. The initial results are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Construction of a tunnel in soil or rock below the ground water table frequently results in the flow of ground water into the tunnel if the ground is permeable or fractures conductive. The injection of cement or chemical based grouts is frequently used during tunnel construction to reduce flow of water into a tunnel. Significant water flow into a tunnel is undesirable for several reasons: • there is a high cost in pumping out water over the lifetime of a tunnel; • drips and flows of water have to be diverted from the roadway or track; • where freezing conditions occur there is the possibility of ice build up and; • ground water levels may be changed possibly affecting surface water such as causing drainage of lakes and ponds, and changes in vegetation. Grout injection is most effectively done ahead of excavation to ensure that the grout penetrates the ground. Where heavy flows of water already occur into a tunnel the grout may be washed out before it sets. Normal practice in ground where water flows are encountered is to inject grout in a number of long holes ahead of the face with outer holes forming a ring around the proposed tunnel excavation – eventually forming a shield of grouted rock around the final tunnel, Figure 1. The holes may be sealed off a couple of metres into the rock with an expandable rubber plug around a pipe through which the grout can be injected, Figure 2. A one-way valve in the plug stops the grout from flowing back out of the hole when pumping stops and avoids grout flowing out through neighbouring holes. The rubber packer with a one-way valve permanently installed in the injection hole precludes the measurement of pressure down the hole when pumping is stopped."

INTRODUCTION Hydraulic concentrators utilize the physical characteristics-size, shape, and specific gravity-of particles suspended in a fluid medium to effect a concentration of desired quality. Fine-coal concentrators include generally those devices which are used to clean roughly 3/4, in. (9.5 mm) top-size coals. While this size designation is somewhat arbitrary, it is consistent with current practice although some fine- coal concentrators can treat coarser coals effectively. A variety of devices have been and are currently being used to wash fine coals and include: dense media cyclones, wet concentrating tables, hydrocyclones, jigs, spirals, launders, and upward-current classifiers. As launders and upward-current classifiers have been replaced by more efficient devices, they no longer warrant consideration as fine-coal washers. And as fine-coal jigs were addressed with the Baum jig under Part 1, Section 2, and heavy media cyclones and hydrocyclones were addressed under Part 2, Section 1, of this Chapter, only the wet concentrating table and the spiral concentrator will be discussed here. WET CONCENTRATING TABLES History The current wet concentrating table evolved from continuous belt concentrators which utilized a flowing film of water to recover heavy metals. In these devices the heavier concentrate moved up the inclined plane of the belt while the lighter impurities were washed away by water flowing down the belt. The natural outgrowth of the continuous belt concentrator was the vanner, a vibrating endless belt which was first developed about 1860 by Hartwig. Later models of the vanner, such as the Frue, incorporated oscillation in a plane transverse to the direction of the water current. Excellent descriptions of these washers are found in The Cleaning of Coal, by Chapman and Mott.80 Further development of tables included the circular stationary table (Linkenbach), the multiple round table (Anaconda-Evans), the bumping table (Campbell), and finally the differential-motion table which is now used extensively for cleaning fine coals.

H. P. Ferri I refer to the article "Degradation Process in Coal Slurry Pipelines" by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott in the September 1988 issue of Mining Engineering. I would like to congratulate Dr. Ayat and his colleague on a very interesting and valuable piece of work. This article is an excellent one, describing a real phenomenon that has been ignored for so long. I do, however, have an objection. The article fails to address the degradation process when coal is processed or transported in other ways than slurry form, particularly those employed in this work. Could, for example, screening (wet or dry) have contributed to the extent of degradation? Perhaps scanning electron micrographs of the samples examined and after screening would have helped to clarify this. I would like to point out that degradation is also observed in pneumatic conveying systems, mechanical conveying, and other means of transportations employed by the mineral industry. Reply by M. G. Ayat We gratefully acknowledge Dr. Fern's comments on the subject paper. As he so rightly points out, the degradation process is a real problem, not only in coal slurry pipelines, but also in many handling and processing equipment employed by the coal and mineral industry. Scanning Electron Microscopic examination of samples may offer very little information about the extent of degradation for several reasons. One is that preparing a representative sample that has undergone degradation will be extremely difficult if not impossible. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that SEM requires only very small amounts of material for testing. Secondly, there is a sample preparation step involved in the SEM examination and, as such, it would be very difficult to associate the extent of degradation to either sample preparation or handling and processing operations. Finally, it is probably worth mentioning that degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors. The logical approach to this problem would, therefore, seem to be a "one-step-at-a-time" approach.

Modem mineral processing plants handle large amounts of ore and produce large tailing streams. Plant performance can be optimized when the water is quickly recovered with a thickener. The caisson thickener was developed to overcome process and mechanical problems with the conventional traction and center column units. The caisson is a hollow center column that serves as a pump house. The rake arm structure is supported by a hydrostatic bearing which sits on top of the caisson. The caisson thickener with a hydrostatic bearing has operated for many years in several mineral processing applications.

The way and methods used for the surface mining of bauxite until the end of the twentieth century in the area of Ghiona, resulted in a significant burden to the natural environment, especially in the cases where it covered extended parts of forests and forest areas as well as important geomorphological formations. The impacts from the surface mining of bauxite which in fact constitute the object of this study relate mainly to the interruption of the natural continuity of the land relief and the alteration of the natural geomorphological activities and are due to: a) the alternating excavations with fronts of great heights, b) the depositions of large volumes of waste materials which originate from the revealing of the ore and c) the dense road network constructed in order to get access to the mine locations.

A system, such as a mine production system or a mine ventilation system which includes the movement of commodities or some material between decision points may, in many instances, be effectively modelled as a network. Mining has often been characterized as primarily a materials handling function. To a great extent this is true, even though it is an over simplification of all the activities involved in a mining operation. Accepting the materials handling characterization of a mining operation permits the extension of the characterization to a flow process. That is, the ore flows from the mining face through the mining phase (excavation & loading, hauling, dumping) through the milling phase (crushing, grinding, recovery) through the smelter phase and finally to marketing. With this concept it is possible to depict a mining operation as a simple network. For example consider an operation consisting of two mines (A and B) with mills at each mine (MA and MB) with the possibility open to treat ore from mine b at mill NB, but it is not feasible to treat mine B ore at MA. The product of both mills is sold.

High purity, high brightness limestone deposits in the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region occur in upper Paleozoic carbonate rocks which are part of an upper Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that unconformably overlies crystalline basement. The Paleozoic strata are divided into formations and members, and correlated with strata of the inner Cordilleran miogeocline. The region has been affected by multiple Mesozoic intrusive, contact, and regional metamorphic events. Structure is complex, and includes polyphase Mesozoic folding and thrusting, and complex Cenozoic structures. The area continues to be seismically active. High brightness (white), high purity crystalline limestone deposits are uncommon because their formation is dependent on several geologic processes which include; 1) depositional environment, 2) contact and or regional metamorphism, 3) folding and faulting, 4) uplift and erosion, and 5) preservation through geologic time. The complex geologic history of the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region has allowed the formation of several large high brightness, high purity limestone deposits which are currently being mined or will be mined in the future. Specialty Minerals, Inc. (formerly Ptizer), Pluess-Staufer (California), Inc. and Partins Limestone, Inc. produce high brightness, high purity limestone from several quarries in the San Bernardino Mountains. These active mines combined with undeveloped deposits controlled by Pluess-Staufer in the San Bernardino Mountains, New York Mountains, and Bristol Mountains in the Mojave area, contain proven and or indicated reserves sufficient to sustain production through the 21st century Detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, recognition of complex structures, sampling, drilling and assay data, are proven tools in the discovery and delineation of high brightness, high purity limestone deposits in the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region of southern California.
