2013 has seen metals, industrial minerals, and coal all reduce in price due to market and geo-political factors. Many companies are taking write-downs to recalibrate their reserves and have enacted focused cost reduction programs. The public domain includes statements where companies have operating cost reduction goals in the $500 million range. Zero-base staffing & budget analysis is a means to achieve optimal employment and cost levels for a given level of production. The method involves measuring the work to be done similar to Lean. Lean is a method to review each step of production and remove anything that doesn?t add value or is necessary to complete finished goods. Zero-base methodology has been applied to mines worldwide producing realistic and sustainable levels of staffing and costs based on the quantity of work. The objective of this paper is to provide the framework of zero-basing with examples of application.

The use of warm (40-50°C) solution for the selective elution (pre-strip) of copper cyanide from gold and silver cyanides adsorbed on activated carbon was found to elute +90% of the adsorbed copper compared to the use of ambient (20°C) solution eluting 50-70% of the adsorbed copper. The warm solution pre-strip elution did have higher co-elution of gold (1-4%) and silver (10-18%) with the copper. The use of ambient solution pre-strip elution co-eluted less gold (0.2%) and silver (2%).

The image of the flotation froth surface in the mineral processing plant contains the information about its composition. This information can be very useful for a technological process automation. Images, captured in the optical part of the measurement system were read by the computer, then were transformed and analysed digitally. The set of image parameters, extracted from an image transforms, was evaluated by statistical analysis. The recognition algorithm constructed in this process allowed to estimate the froth composition.

Room-and-pillar mining at the Big Island Mine uses narrow, yield (i.e., load transferring) pillars to achieve high resource recovery and productivity. Two flat-lying 3- to 3fi-meter (10- to 11fi-ft) seams are mined. The interburden between the seams is about 10 meters (33 ft) and the cover depth is 250 to 330 meters (820 to 1,080 ft).Most of the mining has been single-seam, but two-seam mining will begin in the near future. Yield pillars minimize stress transfer between the seams. However, it is important that good long-term stability be maintained to prevent subsidence over a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. Three stress issues impacting stability are discussed in this paper: (1) higher-than-gravity vertical pre-mining stresses, (2) time-dependent stress transfer or arching, and (3) stresses induced by strata gas. Although the stress environment and behavior is not fully understood, steps have been taken in mine design and operations to minimize impacts to stability. Stress determinations have been very important to verify analytical predictions used in mine design and in long-term stability assessment.

Extensive efforts are under way toward applying computer techniques to mine production scheduling problems. These efforts are concentrated in four areas: optimization, computerization of traditional methods, heuristics, and simulations. These areas complement each other rather than compete. Characteristics of each are discussed toward enabling the engineer to evaluate specific systems that may be encountered. Alternative approaches within each classification are described as well as the motivation for each.

This paper, in its first part, compares the profile and economic weight in the extraction of industrial minerals and aggregates to the so called conventional mining activities (metals, coal, gas and oil extraction) in Brazil. In its second part, a descriptive analysis of the present situation of the education in Brazil is made, emphasizing the graduation and post-graduation formation especially in engineering. The curricular structure of the schools that prepare the mining workforce is discussed and the presence of specific subjects in industrial minerals is evaluated. Finally, considerations are made on the actions being taken in the main universities and companies, aiming to improve the formation of the specialized workforce. The Brazilian mining production, comparing 2010 to 2011 showed an expansion of more than 3% (IBGE, 2012). Not bad, but nothing to do with the 13% growth between 2010 and 2009 (influenced by a recovery effect from the 2008 commodities? nightmare). The commodities that had a rising behavior were titanium, gypsum, nickel, graphite, bauxite, phosphate, chrome and chrysotile. All of them were eclipsed by the impressive growth of iron ore production. Some decreases could be noticed, eg. in zinc, kaolin, magnesite and salt production (DNPM, 2012). In fact, the mining activities followed the positive growth of the country these last 5 years. The commercial balance (exports against imports) was not spectacular (positive in US$ 30 billion in 2010). It is important to notice that the mineral commodities balance was US$ 35 billion, representing 27.4% of the total exports and 15.6% of the total imports of Brazil (DNPM, 2012). In this positive environment, the workforce in Brazil showed progress in number of formal jobs and average revenues.

The sorptive and impervious nature of clay materials was recognized long before modem technology allowed us to understand the physiochemistry of clays. In Cyprus, around 5000 BC, sorbent clays were used for fulling woolen cloth. One of the earliest recorded uses of clays as an impervious liner was more than 3200 years ago in the construction of a bitumen-sand-gravel-clay liner built along the embankment of the Tigris River at Assur. Today one of the most common applications for clay minerals in the environmental industry is for use as impermeable barriers to fluid transport. Clay minerals are fine in particle size and thus have large surface areas, which, as a result of intermolecular forces and ionic substitutions, make them excellent materials for both ion exchange and ion sorption. Therefore it was logical to consider certain clay materials for applications in the environmental industry, where they can act as physical and chemical traps for potential contaminants. Certain bentonites have historically been used as sealants for fluids (Grim, 1962), and other clays have been used as sorbents for both water and oil (Haden, Jr., 1972). Prior to the 1980s, disposal of the nation's municipal, commercial, chemical, and nuclear wastes was largely indiscriminate and poorly regulated. This created environmental pollution problems, especially with respect to groundwater contamination. Promulgation of federal regulations like the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA - commonly known as Superfund) have forced a more careful and costly approach to waste disposal. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the government body charged with enforcing and ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing toxic waste production, storage, and disposal. Widespread application of geotechnology to the design and construction of waste containment systems and to pollution remediation has become necessary due to such laws and because of increasing use of the subsurface environment for the disposal of hazardous wastes. In the United States nearly 1.8 kg of trash is disposed of per person per day, which amounts to nearly 181 Mt per year. This amount is more than double the waste produced in 1960, and these numbers are expected to continue to increase. Canada produces approximately 1.68 kg of waste per person per day. The EPA estimates that in the United States 64% of our garbage is landfilled, 18% recycled, and 18% incinerated. Even with continued increases in recycling and incineration efforts, the EPA projects that the United States will still need 82% of today's landfill capacity in the year 2000. Data on the exact number of landfills in the United States and Canada is conflicting in part because of changing definitions of what constitutes a landfill and because of inadequate record- keeping by some states and provinces. An estimate of the number of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the United States in 1990 to 1991 ranged from 4 462 to 10 467 with an average estimate of 6 600. In Canada the number of MSW landfills reported varied from 5 493 in a 1982 survey to 1 766 reported in a 1991 National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) survey (Repa and Sheets, 1992b). A properly operated MSW landfill on average requires 1 hectare of land per year per 25 000 people (Coates, 198 1). In addition to MSW facilities, there are also waste disposal facilities needed for hazardous waste and low level and high level radioactive waste. In 1983, approximately 266 Mt of hazardous waste was generated in the United States, almost 50% of this by industrial production. About 68% of the hazardous waste generated in the United States and Canada and almost 50% generated in Europe are still landfilled (Egger, 1987). In 1985, approximately 51 000 m3 of commercially produced low level radioactive waste was disposed of in radioactive waste disposal sites across the United States (Jungling and Greeves, 1989). By 1987, the US defense program had produced approximately 10 000 t of high level nuclear waste. In addition, there were approximately 14 000 t of spent fuel assemblies from commercial nuclear power plants in temporary storage; the amount is expected to nearly triple by the year 2000. Presently most commercial spent fuel assemblies are stored in water-filled pools at nuclear power plants. Defense waste is stored on federal reservations in surface and underground steel tanks (Anon., 1987). Under federal law nearly all waste disposal and containment sites are required to have a liner or barrier and a cover system design that meets federal- or state-approved hydraulic conductivity requirements for the type of waste that the site will receive. When approved materials, necessary for constructing the waste containment structure, are not available on site, one of the most economical ways to meet these requirements is through the use of clay, soil/clay, or clay/geotextile materials. In a 1991 survey by NSWMA of its members and other select private sector facilities, 81% of the surveyed landfills had some type of liner system. About 75% of these liners were clay materials (either recompacted or natural). The remaining 30% were using flexible membrane liners as part of a liner system. Clay liner materials are most commonly used in the South, Midwest, West-central, and South-central regions of the United States. About 93% of the landfill facilities had closure plans, and of these 91 % were using clay materials in some way for the final cover material (Repa and Sheets, 1992a). Waste barriers and containment structures take several basic forms, and they are used in a variety of different applications: 1) cutoff walls, 2) soil or soil/clay-admix liners, 3) geosynthetic bentonite-clay/geotextile membranes, 4) radioactive waste containment barriers, and 5) synthetic geomembranes. The overall economics of a coal production unit are governed by a number of interdependent parameters which individually and collectively affect the final result. A business judgement is measured through return on investment considerations and in this respect, a sensitivity analysis proves useful. Figures 1 and 2 show how the various parameters affect return on investment through unfavourable change from planned or expected values. In the case of metallurgical coals, the selling price negotiated is the primary and most sensitive variable, followed by transportation, clean coal yield and capital funds invested in mining. It is clear that coal preparation plant capital and operating costs are the least sensitive to R.O.I. For energy coals, the selling price is determined by heat energy content (x cents per million BTU's) and is therefore not con¬sidered as an interdependent variable. In this case, transportation cost is the major primary factor affecting the level of income. Again the amount of saleable clean coal or total yield has a major effect on return on investment. Most of the factors considered in Figures 1 and 2 are fixed and unfavorable change from planned values becomes critical but clean coal yield is to a great extent controllable during actual operations. Once the theoretical yield for a particular coal has been determined, the optimum return is achieved by approaching this theoretical yield as nearly as possible in practical commercial operation.

During my College days in Mexico City, my Mineralogy Professor used to say "Mexico is the Horn of Plenty, rich in minerals, and it is easier to say which minerals are not found instead of stating all that exist. He said that the only ones missing are bauxite, diamonds and titanium ores." Today, twenty years later, a rutile mine in Oaxaca is in successful operation. Mexico has an area of approximately two million square kilometers, with volcanic activity, large shores and mountainous areas reaching as high as 6,000 meters above sea level. These conditions are favourable for most mineral deposits, some -of commercial value and others as a source of mineral samples only. (fig. No.1) In addition to vast mineral wealth, Mexico has -another valuable asset in .his people. Even before the discovery of America, natives were successfully mining metals, and during the Colonial --days, the mineral deposits were mined to increase the wealth of Spain, and it increased the --knowledge of mining. All this experience was passed along from generation to generation, and created a tradition of mining and minerals processing engineers, that currently account for approximately 182,000 persons supported by mining related activities.

Faced with decreasing production from the gold heap leach operation, Robinson implemented a drilling and blasting program on the leach pads in 1993. This program offset some of the negative effects of low ore permeability and short circuiting of leach solution that resulted in lower than optimum recoveries. The drilling and blasting program created new solution flow paths and increased gold recovery. Production and pulp assays at depth intervals, prior to and following drilling and blasting, reveal the degree of short circuiting and benefits of the program.

The need for reliable and adaptable underground mine communications has become a focal point for both the safety and logistics of a mining operation. New mine communication technology aims to connect personnel, equipment, and data together while setting up a network that can be utilized during normal operations and also in an emergency event. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) requires mine operators to establish post-accident, two-way communication between underground and surface personnel and electronic tracking for all mine personnel. Communications systems must be designed such that they can survive major mine accidents, including explosions, fires, inundations and ground falls. Typical, wire-bound communication technologies are vulnerable because wires are often destroyed in such accidents. Wireless technologies that work well on the surface, such as cellular telephone networks; have limited applicability underground because the wireless signals do not propagate through rock.

Modern high-performance disc filters such as the BoVac Disc Filter have set new standards in applications where large capacities of solids, liquids and air have to be managed through the filters. These disc filters have an enormous hydraulic capacity. For applications in mineral processing - with a special focus on tailings – which typically have high solids throughputs but low filtrate and air flows, this capacity can be used to expand the filtration area while maintaining the benefits of very good cake discharge even with thin cakes (4-5 mm) and a high filter speed. Research work over the last century has proven that increasing the filter area should be achieved by increasing the disc diameter. Because adding more discs leads to big problems with the cake discharge. However, as the disc diameter increases, the filter segments become longer and heavier. A suitable compromise was therefore found by doing both. The result is the first vacuum disc filter that offers significantly more than 300 m² of filtration area, but has no more than 6 discs.

Pumped storage power plants are one of the options to store the fluctuating production of electric energy from renewable sources in a sustainable manner and is able to provide Europe with the opportunity to overcome the effects of climate change. However, due to the extensive land use required when planning the water reservoirs, several projects have been declined after social conflicts raised, even in Germany. Nonetheless, after the flooding and drought periods in northern Germany, the catastrophic floods of July 2021 in south west Germany, the country’s need to decrease its dependency on import of gas and energy supply, and the energy transition goals set for 2030 and 2050, it has become clear that the implementation for water reservoirs must increase in the coming years, whether above ground or underground. Furthermore, not only Germany is interested in the use of underground cavities for water and energy storage, other European countries as Sweden are currently developing studies and solutions to bring this concept soon to reality in Europe. This article introduces the systematic approach for planning and designing large underground cavities for water reservoirs as a sustainable energy transition approach and a climate change response by showcasing the process of selection and results of the “Energy and Water Storage Harz” (EWAZ) research project. Additionally, the results of the evaluation of the effect of implementing the selected underground and surface infrastructure into the current water management system in the region is presented. Finally, the different possibilities evaluated for the underground cavities within the project and the technical challenges involved are be discussed.

With full production from the Casteel Mine in 1987 The Doe Run Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fluor Corporation, encountered a significant increase of copper and iron to the Viburnum Mill. This major change of the lead, zinc, and copper metal ratios in the ore created circuit problems which adversely affected concentrate quality. Recognizing the problem, the company embarked on a metallurgical research program to include laboratory, pilot plant, and plant testing. The program developed an innovative copper prefloat process which both increased copper recovery and significantly improved concentrate quality. The process was tested and first operated at Doe Run's Brushy Creek Mill then installed at the Viburnum Mill in 1992. A brief history of development, plant operating data, and other potential applications for the patented processes will be described in the paper.

CARBAD is a recently developed Australian process for the recovery of gold and platinum group metals (PGM). The process relies on the selective agglomeration phenomena of the gold and PGM to capture the mineral in a carbon-hydrocarbon media. The precious minerals are then extracted from the loaded media by a solvent gold room process producing a relatively pure concentrate. The media is then reformed and recycled. The process development from batch test work to a 5 t/h commercial scale CARBAD plant is discussed. The operation and results of processing a variety of ore types at several alluvial and hardrock gold mines is examined. The operating and capital costs for the CARBAD process shows that it is significantly less than that the conventional CIP/CIL. The environmental safety of the process is a major feature where precious metal deposits are located within urban environments or within wilderness areas.

The Williams Mine mines and mills 6000 t/d (6600 stp’d) of gold ore using SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, electrowinning and refining. Electrowinning, high-pressure cathode washing, filtering, retorting and refining are based around the use of knitted stainless steel mesh cathodes. Their primary advantage over conventional steel wool cathodes is that electrowon gold can be washed off and the cathode can then be reused. Typically, the knitted cathodes have a useful life of up to 15 months. Gold production of up to15 t/month (50,000 oz/month) is easily processed with this system. Presented is a description of this operation, including a review of the equipment and performance data.

This paper reviews major developments in continuous haulage technology for underground coal mines. Haulage systems in use and development are investigated through a comprehensive literature search and visits to mines and manufacturers. The systems include flexible conveyor train, mobile conveyor, multiple- unit continuous haulage, extensible and belt turning systems. Strengths and weaknesses of the systems are assessed in light of their operating under remote control and their application to the computer-assisted continuous mining machine being developed by the US Bureau of Mines. Through mining scenarios, candidate haulage systems are conceptualized to be consistent with the capabilities of the mining machine.
