ITmk3®(Iron Technology Mark III) is an innovative new ironmaking technology whereby high quality iron nuggets are produced directly from iron ore fines and coal in a rotary hearthfurnace1). The reaction mechanism has been investigated in detail through fundamental laboratory research2)3), and the ITmk3 process has progressed from the laboratory to commercialization by the success of the pilot plant tests initiated at Midrex’ Technical Center and at the Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) located at Kobe Steel Ltd. Kakogawa Steel Works4)5). Pilot operations have demonstrated rapid production of the iron nuggets with complete metal/slag separation at a relatively low operating temperature. The Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) in Japan has logged 21 days continuous operation during which high quality iron nuggets were produced directly from fine ore and coal. The operation technology and the engineering data obtained from these pilot tests were instrumental for the scale-up of the ITmk3 process for the Mesabi Nugget Corp. pilot demonstration plant, which is located at Cleveland Cliffs Inc. Northshore Mining iron ore pellet plant in Silver Bay, MN. The ITmk3 process is an ideally suited technology for siting at the iron ore mine, as it allows the economical production of a value-added merchant iron product.

Liquid-solids separation is common to practically all mineral and coal processing as the bulk of beneficiation plants employ water as the major processing vehicle. The growing usage of hydrometallurgy has increased the importance of liquid-solid separation as acidic and basic solutions result in greater amounts of colloidal solids, with their consequent greater difficulty of separation, the economic need for chemical recovery to minimize this operating cost, and the usual necessity of employing more costly construction materials. The three processing steps covered in this section have significant capital costs. Drying, particularly, has an important operating cost because of the obvious need for energy to evaporate the water or solvent. Several common factors influence all three liquid-solid separation steps. Particle Size and Size Distribution. In general, finer particles have slower settling and filtration rates. The specific surface area is increased, which means a lower solids concentration in the thickener underflow and discharged filter cake as well as a grater moisture content to be evaporated in the drying step. Therefore, overgrinding or excessive attrition should be avoided. Consideration should be given to optimum particle size consistent with entire plant operation performance and recovery. Solids Concentration. Increased feed solids concentration will generally minimize required equipment size and costs in all three liquid-solid separation steps. Most thickeners are designed on the basis of unit area required, expressed as square feet per short ton of dry solids per day (square meters per metric ton per day) which will usually decrease with increased feed solids concentration. Filtration rates also increase as the required flow through the capillaries of the filter cake decreases. Dryer capacity increases and less energy per ton of final product is required to evaporate the associated moisture. Particle Shape and Surface Characteristics. Generally, optimum shape is a spherical particle of zero porosity. As either of these factors degrade away from the desired state, difficulty increases. This is particularly true in drying, where porosity can decrease drying rate significantly if the moisture must first reach the particle surface by diffusion

An essential prerequisite to expanding the application of longwall mining techniques in the United States is the development of a better understanding of the mechanics of rock mass deformation near the mined seam, in the inter- burden and at the surface. The results of studies of this type will provide a basis for the development of empirical and/or numerical modeling techniques to predict the rock mass response to mining both near and far from the mined seam. This will lead to improved gate and panel design, resulting in maximum recovery, increased productivity, as well as provide a mechanism for assessing likely surface effects induced by long- wall mining. Presented here is the instrument plan to be used at Kitt Mine No. 1 in the study of rock mass response to two adjacent longwall panels.

This paper describes the development of a novel selective flocculation technique for recovering phosphate values from ores containing silicate or carbonate gangue minerals. Data from initial flocculation response and reagent adsorption studies on component mineral suspensions and synthetic mixtures were used to assess the influence of various process parameters (e.g., reagent dosages, particle size, solids concentration, and conditioning regimes) on single-stage selective flocculation tests involving natural silicate and carbonate ores. In these tests a high degree of selectivity was achieved using low dosages of a low-molecular-weight cationic dispersant and a mid-range molecular weight cationic flocculant. Testwork was then extended to the evaluation of several floc recovery systems (sedimentation, hydrocyclones, and floc flotation) in a multi-stage process involving redispersion and reflocculation. Results from these tests clearly demonstrated the feasibility of producing marketable phosphate concentrates from both ore types.

A Mark IV surface force apparatus (SFA) was used to conduct direct force measurements between mica surfaces in dodecylamine hydrogen chloride collector solutions at varying pH levels. It was found that long-range hydrophobic forces reach a maximum at pH 9.5, which also corresponds to the maxima attained by the contact angle and flotation recovery of quartz. The charge densities are comparable on both mica and quartz surfaces (0.40 to 0.48 nm2), making it possible to draw conclusions on the flotation of quartz from the direct force measurements conducted on mica. Therefore, it may be suggested that, in the pH range of 8.0 to 10.3, the maximum flotation recovery of quartz may be attributed to the appearance of a long-range hydrophobic force, which, in turn, can be related to the formation of a close-packed monolayer (or hemimicelle) in the presence of neutral amines formed as a result of hydrolysis.

An accurate knowledge of the interactions among mineral particles and between such particles and dissolved and precipitated species is important in developing efficient separation processes. In this investigation, interactions relevant to dispersion and selective reagent adsorption (the two main prerequisites for selective flocculation) within Florida phosphatic clay Waste were studied. Initial studies with artificial slimes, consisting of pure clay and phosphate minerals, showed dispersion of artificial slimes to be relatively easy. The problems that were encountered during selective flocculation of the artificial slimes were due to unselective polyacrylic acid adsorption on clay, which was caused by the presence of multivalent calcium ions on the exchangeable cation positions on the clay surfaces. This problem could be solved by exchanging calcium for sodium, which reduces the interaction between the polymer and the clay surface. This procedure, however, was not successful for mineral mixtures. Natural slimes were found to be much more difficult to disperse. This was attributed to the presence of cementing materials such as humic substances and Al and Fe (hydr)oxide precipitates. Selective removal of these cementing materials resulted in good dispersion and partial separation. A further increase in the separation of natural slimes is most likely determined by the presence of calcium on the clay surfaces, as was found for the artificial mixtures.

Electrolytic techniques have historically been used to remove arsenic, antimony and bismuth from copper refining electrolytes. However, both solvent extraction and ion exchange techniques have been heavily researched and in a number of cases commercially introduced. In this study a large number of solvent extraction reagents and ion exchange resins were screened to determine the selectivity of the reagents for impurity removal. Solvating extractants were found to efficiently remove arsenic from electrolyte. The extent of arsenic extraction increased in the following order: TBP < DBBP < DPPP < Cyanex 925 < Cyanex 923. Antimony and bismuth extraction from electrolyte were demonstrated with the reagent 2EHAP04. The ion exchange resins UR-3300 and Duolite C-467 were found to strongly extract antimony and bismuth from electrolyte. C-467 appeared to be superior to UR-3300.

Introduction The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation will present its contribution to the A. M. Gaudin Flotation Symposium in four parts. The first two segments will discuss briefly the historical development of the Utah Copper Division and describe the ore body. The third segment will review the facilities and operating procedures for the Utah Copper Division&apos;s newest plant, the Bonneville Concentrator. The fourth segment describes flotation process circuitry, including molybdenite recovery procedures, at the Arthur and Magna concentrators. (The Bonneville concentrator is a crushing and grinding unit and does not have its own flotation plant). 1. Historical Development Progress through change has been the key to the successful operation of the Utah Copper Division for more than 70 years. As the original low-grade copper operation, the pressures to remain competitive and profitable have dictated the timing and extent of each change. Much of the change has occurred through technological and economic advancements in the area of ore concentration. The Utah Copper Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation had its origin June 4, 1903, when the Utah Copper Company was organized. The initial mill of 300 tpd (tons per day) capacity was built at Copperton a few miles below the present Bingham Canyon mine site. From 1904 to 1910, the Copperton mill was expanded to a capacity of 1,000 tpd, and all of the known apparatus for gravity concentration were evaluated.

Once an ore body has been probed and outlined, and sufficient information has been collected to warrant further analysis, the important process of selecting the most appropriate method or methods for mining can begin. At this stage, the selection is preliminary only, serving as the basis for a project layout and feasibility study. Later, it may be found necessary to revise the details, but the basic principles for the ore extraction should remain a part of the final layout. With respect to the basic principles employed, relatively few mining methods are used today. For the purposes of this presentation, the principles are classified as follows: 1) For naturally supported stopes, the available methods are room-and-pillar mining and sublevel stoping. 2) For artificially supported stopes, the available methods are shrinkage stoping, cut-and-fill mining, square-set mining, and longwall mining. 3) For caving methods, the available techniques are sublevel caving and block caving. Due to the uniqueness of each ore deposit, the variations on each of these methods are nearly limitless. It is impossible to include even the major variations in this chapter; the goal of this chapter is to present the principles as a guide to the mining engineer in adapting the general methods to specific needs. The selection process described herein is intended to supply the techniques by which the candidate methods available for a given ore body can be reduced to one or two feasible approaches. The feasible approaches then can be evaluated in detail, and the particular modifications can be investigated. In describing costs and economic factors, all values herein are expressed in terms of 1978 US dollars.

Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem. Combined permeability and leaching tests were done in the laboratory on samples of clay bearing ores to evaluate a clay-stabilizing polymer&apos;s effectiveness in preventing the problem. Test results indicate that treating the ores with cationic polymers could maintain permeabilities two to five times greater than the long-term permeabilities present in untreated ores. Both alkaline (pH 8.5) and acidic (pH 2.0) leaches were used in the permeability leaching tests. To determine the reasons for the success of the clay stabilizing polymer, clay swelling tests and zeta potential measurements were made on untreated ore samples and on ore samples treated with the cationic polymer. Test results indicate the cationic polymer could reduce the degree of negative charge on fine particles and their tendency to disperse, as well as reduce clay swelling. Test results indicate a potentially beneficial effect on operating parameters such as capacity and injection pressure during leaching, if clays and fines are kept stabilized. This may be done by treating the zone of high fluid velocity near injection wells with cationic polymers.

Marketing is the linchpin of the industrial-mineral (IM) industry. Without markets and consumers for IM products, all other associated IM activities are superfluous. The simple existence of an IM deposit does not mean that it can be exploited. A dynamic interaction between exploration (geology), mining, processing, transport, marketing, sales, and consumers is required for profits. Geology dictates the existence of a deposit, but markets dictate its development, and transportation provides the connection. This is true to such an extent that marketing commonly is called the exploration phase of IMs. Marketing is strategic and includes long-range market-development and planning activities, whereas selling is tactical and more focused on day-to-day consumer interactions. Each will help the other when properly done. Many producers of IMs have failed because of inadequate marketing skill, information, and practice. Over many years at the Montana Bureau of Mines, the many developers seeking technical assistance to find an IM deposit, but who had no marketing plan, always failed. In contrast, the few who sought assistance first on marketing, with the IM deposit to be found later, always succeeded (Richard Berg, personal communication, 1998). Marketing has many facets helped by geologists who must be aware of what marketing is attempting to do. A geologist needs to understand many aspects of IMs: location (deposits, plants, consumers), processing (specifications), transportation (truck, rail, barge, ship), competition (local, regional, national, international), substitutes, pricing, and new developments and market forces of all kinds. Some needed skills are not taught formally to geologists, so well-rounded self-education and on-the-job training are the way a geologist normally enters into IM marketing. The IM geologist generally is associated with marketing either by helping to prepare a market study or by acting on the results of one. Preparing a market study is a two-part process. The first part is relatively simple but requires a time-consuming collation of data into an IM survey (mostly past-and present-oriented). The more difficult and much more important second part entails expanding the IM survey into a market evaluation (mainly future-oriented) that emphasizes forecasting, timing, location, and specific products. A market evaluation generally boils down to formulating the right questions to ask of the right persons. One very good question to ask is, "What could be the market for this specific IM?" while thinking for yourself without excessive recourse to gossip, rumors, promoters, developers, or (at times) IM experts. The evaluation must prove that market potential exists and suggests a marketing plan. Effective marketing is an ongoing process, with the initial marketing plan modified over time, using wide and continuous input to avoid tunnel vision. Industrial-mineral markets are based either on commodity (lower-priced, basic-processing) minerals or specialty (higher-priced, value-added) minerals. IM marketing methods are either product-driven (commodity minerals), a more traditional approach, or market-driven (specialty minerals), but these are neither mutually exclusive nor is one always better than the other. Focusing too much on specialty minerals can lead to problems. A blend of commodity products with specialty products commonly lowers risk and enhances long-term profits. The highest profits occur in specialty minerals at the cost of higher risk and complexity and require intelligent marketing, versatile technical services, and creative research and development. Industrial minerals are best served by an industrial-marketing approach rather than a consumer approach. Modern industrial marketing emphasizes the consumer using the "marketing concept." The marketing concept focuses all management and operational activities on total consumer management and satisfaction similar to the total quality management approaches to excellence.

A total of 72 monuments were used to determine a three dimensional view of mine subsidence. In addition, the results of measurements were used to compute ground strains with the use of a numerical model.

INTRODUCTION The driving of drifts is a very important aspect of underground mining. It is not unusual for the percent¬age of rock broken during development in a mine using sublevel caving, for example, to be as much as 25% of the total. If one also considers the amount broken for transport, ventilation, and exploration drifts, one can easily understand that the planning and excavation of drifts play a major part in the total economics of the mine (Fig. 1). Increasing mechanization in mining demands larger tunnel areas for transport and mining equipment. With modern machines the hard work involved in using hand¬held pushers is gone, and a better environment is achieved. More rational methods could be used, but much of the experience the working man acquired by working close to the rock face (such as utilizing the natural weak planes in the rock when he placed the drill¬ing holes) has unfortunately been lost. By having sepa¬rate shifts for drilling, loading, and hauling, more atten¬tion has to be placed upon a well-designed drilling pattern. Some reduction in the number of holes required can be achieved with mechanized drilling because of the larger holes that can be produced. On the other hand, it is probably not possible to achieve the same precision as with pneumatic pushers, and it is difficult to utilize the larger holes because these cause more damage to the re¬maining rock. Recently, however, the precision has be¬come very good with the parallel booms and automatic devices for setting the lookout angle (Fig. 2). A larger arch of the drift roof requires a more carefully executed blasting procedure than before in order to prevent rock fall and to insure a sufficiently long stand-up time. In this chapter, empirical relationships that can be used to design an economic and optimal drift blasting design will be presented. The principles of the calcula¬tion method are based upon the earlier work of Langefors and Kihlström (1963) and Gustafsson (1973). COMPARISON OF EXPLOSIVES To provide for the use of various explosives it is necessary to have a basis of comparison. Several meth¬ods have been developed to characterize the strength of an explosive. Some examples are comparison of values given by (1) calculated explosion energies; (2) the ballistic mortar test; (3) the Trauzl lead block test; (4) the brisance test; (5) the weight strength concept; and (6) the underwater test. Introduction Cross borehole seismic tomography (CBST) is a geophysical technique that allows definition of the distribution of some physical rock property between two boreholes. The method is similar to the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scans used by the medical industry. This paper describes the method, its applications and the developing trends in its use that interest the mining industry. The idea of using tomography in connection with geophysical methods for measuring rock properties between boreholes has been around for three or four decades. Until the advent of high-speed, large-capacity computers, the necessary calculations were too formidable for production use. Another factor in the development of the technique has been the refinement of a mathematical base to meet the needs of the medical industry. The geophysical applications have benefited from this refinement. An extensive discussion of the basic theory is given in Kak and Slaney (1988). CBST, although widely researched and written about, is still not extensively put to use in mining and engineering projects. Most real world examples in the literature have come from research carried out by government laboratories or by large companies. An exception is the regular use by Prospection Geophysique Francaise (Cottin et al., 1986) in damsite investigations. The Japanese appear to be doing extensive research and testing of CBST&apos;s uses in civil engineering projects (Saito et al., 1988). Canada is researching the use of the method in connection with nuclear waste site investigations (Wong et al., 1987). Finland has tested the method in connection with a foundation investigation for a nuclear power plant (Cosma et al., 1984). In the US, the US Bureau of Mines has taken an interest in using CBST as a means to enhance in situ mining operations (Tweeton, 1988). Major oil companies are examining the method as a tool in oil field development (Justice et al., 1989). Description of the method CBST involves placing a series of receivers down one borehole and recording transmissions from an energy source placed successively at a series of positions in another hole. The objective is to generate a dense network of seismic raypaths between the holes. The denser the network of raypaths, the better the features between the boreholes are resolved. Either seismic travel times or sine wave amplitudes are measured by the receivers. Analysis of travel times between boreholes develops a picture of rock velocities between the holes. Analysis of seismic wave amplitudes develops a picture of the distribution of energy transmission characteristics between the holes. These seismic properties can be used to define occurrences of fracture zones, lenticular sequences or other important geologic data not apparent from examination of the borehole logs. When longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) waves are analyzed, the physical properties, such as elastic moduli, can also be mapped. When wave amplitudes are measured, rather extensive corrections to the data are necessary. There is some disagreement among researchers as to the feasibility of making some of the corrections. For this reason, this paper will concentrate primarily on travel time analysis. Wave amplitude analysis will be mentioned occasionally only in passing. This does not mean that amplitude analysis does not provide important data on rock parameters, only that for the present there are limitations on its uses. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP), extensively used in recent years in oil exploration, is similar to CBST. Instead of using two boreholes, however, the VSP method uses an array of seismic sources or detectors down one hole and an array of detectors or sources along the surface radiating outward from the hole. While adequate for determining vertical velocity distributions, the VSP method is not, by itself, suitable for most engineering or mining projects. Pyrophyllite is a naturally occurring hydrous aluminum silicate with the molecular formula SiO,,AI,,(OH), or, as more commonly expressed, the oxide formula A120,~4Si02~H20. Pyrophyllite is rarely found in deposits as the pure mineral and is often intimately associated with quartz, sericite, kaolinite, and diaspore. These associated minerals, to a large degree, help determine the most appropriate commercial application for a given pyrophyllite ore. Structural similarities plus the generally soft platy nature of pyrophyllite has in the past caused it to be included with talc in applications and production data. The Minerals Yearbook, published annually by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), still reports on talc and pyrophyllite together, although admitting that they do not share the same uses. Pyrophyllite has also at times been considered a clay mineral because of its structure and chemistry. The refractory properties of pyrophyllite have been known for nearly 200 years, but it has only been in the past 60 to 70 years that a variety of applications have been developed to exploit the unique characteristics of this mineral. Worldwide, pyrophyllite is a component of refractories, whiteware, foundry mold dressings, pesticides, paint, plastics, rubber, cement, fiberglass, and soap. Historical Overview The most salient refractory features of pyrophyllite are its low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, low moisture expansion, and good resistance to corrosion by molten metals and basic slags. One of the first recorded uses of this mineral was as firebrick in Japan in the early 1800s. This followed its discovery in 1797 on Mount Omotoyama at the site of the present Mitsuishi mine. In addition to firebrick, sawn blocks of ore were used for carvings and in the manufacture of slate pencils and signature seals. The Mitsuishi mine is still one of Japan&apos;s largest. By the mid-1800s, refractories were being made in Japan from roseki (a pyrophyllite-bearing ore) for the construction of metal melting furnaces. The mineral did not get its name until 1829 when R. Herman, testing a sample of supposed talc from the gold-quartz veins at the Berezovo deposit in the Urals, showed that it was actually an aluminum silicate and designated it pyrophyllite. This name was derived from the Greek pur for fue and phullon for leaf, in allusion to the effect of heat in causing separation of the laminae in foliated varieties (Mellor, 1927). The exact date of the discovery of pyrophyllite in the United States is uncertain, but it is believed that the talc and soapstone deposits noted in an 1827 report on the geology of the slate belt of North Carolina were actually pyrophyllite occurrences (Olmstead, 1827). Pyrophyllite was first used in North Carolina on a local basis in the early 1800s. Blocks were sawn and cut for use as stove linings, mantels, chimneys, fireplaces, and gravestones. This was the material of choice because it did not shrink when heated, but cut easily and hardened as it weathered. Pyrophyllite crayons were sold commercially by local gold miners for steel marking and as tailor&apos;s chalk from about 1800 until 1922. It was during this period that pyrophyllite was discovered near the town of Hemp (later renamed Robbins), NC. The large quantity of scrap resulting from the sawing of crayons at this deposit prompted the construction in 1921 of a grinding plant. The ore scrap was ground to fine granules and sold to asphalt producers to prevent shingles from sticking together. By the mid-1930s, milled pyrophyllite from North Carolina was also being successfully utilized by the ceramics industry in whiteware for its low cost and ability to shorten firing time. Also during the 1930s, pyrophyllite was first used in kilncar furniture in the United States. Canada was another early entrant in the pyrophyllite business. Mining at the Foxtrap deposit on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland began in 1904, with ore shipped to the United States. Production from this deposit was mostly sporadic in the ensuing years until 1956 when mining began for shipment and captive use in US tile manufacture. This production has remained continuous and still essentially captive to the present. The Foxtrap deposit is currently the sole commercial source of pyrophyllite in Canada.

Strictly defined, a stull is an inclined or horizontal timber support; a vertically placed timber is defined as a prop. Common usage allows the catchall term "stull" to refer to all such uniaxial mine support, regardless of orientation. Typically a stull is a round wooden column that is wedged in place to provide short-term auxiliary support between sill and back, or between hanging wall and footwall. Stulls may be used exclusively or in con- junction with other support systems such as roof bolts, shotcrete, or cribbing. Stulls are used both as local temporary support in stoping operations and for uniform systematic support installations. Where stoping areas are to be abandoned soon after excavation, stulls may be used to provide temporary support during mining operations. Where controlled caving and subsidence is required, stull supports are designed to fail in a systematic, predictable manner. Wood type is selected on the basis of availability, price, and load carrying characteristics. Coniferous woods are typically used, especially to carry heavy ground loads. Brittle woods are generally avoided because of their tendency to fail suddenly. Gradual yielding failure is preferable to sudden, unexpected failure of the support. Some usage of wood from deciduous trees such as cottonwood and other poplars has been reported in Grants, NM. These stulls reportedly mushroomed as the ground load increased but continued to maintain their structural integrity. Stulls fabricated from structural steel are used in special applications. Adjustable lengths are commercially available in mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic designs. The high cost of mechanical stulls limits their use to mining systems where recovery and reuse is possible. End blocking, also called headboards or footboards, uses wood blocks that are placed between the stull end and the ground they are supporting. The blocks are typically 50.8 to 101.6 mm (2 to 4 in.) thick, 203.2 to 304.8 mm (8 to 12 in.) wide, and 381 to 609.6 mm (15 to 24 in.) long. End blocking serves to distribute the support over wider back area. Compression of the end blocking gives visual indication of wall movement prior to failure of the stull. A common application of the stull is in flat-bedded uranium mining during pillar extraction. Many western US uranium mines use a pillar pattern development to delineate the irregular ore pods. After development of an appropriate sized pillar, the ore pillars are then sequentially mined out, leaving the undercut hanging wall or back to cave. Where thickness of the ore is less than 4.3 m (14 ft), stulls are generally used to provide ground control as the pillar is removed in slices. Experience dictates the density of stull placement. In general, the number and size of stulls should be sufficient to resist ground closure and to provide support for drilling and loading operations adjacent to the pillar. Stulls next to the mining face are often lagged 0.9 to 1.2 m (3 or 4 ft) up from the floor (or sill) to confine the blasted ore to a passage next to the pillar. Mucking is simplified by this confinement. Experience dictates whether back control along a mining face requires removal of stulls to allow con- trolled subsidence of the back or hanging wall. Without caving or closure, abutment pressure can create poor ground conditions near the pillar.

The Republic of South Africa is a heterogeneous mixture of Black Africans, Afrikaans, British, Indians, Malayans, French Huguenots, and many others from Europe and Asia. A decisive date in its recent history is the collapse of the Apartheid Regime in 1994. For a metallurgist, South Africa is the country of diamonds, gold, platinum, and many other metals. In 1887 Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) was able to take control of the De Beers Mining Company after the discovery of diamonds at Kimberly in 1866. It was there where the so-called School of Mines was inaugurated in 1896.

Located south of downtown Seattle, the Beacon Hill Station & Tunnels is the key section of the southern segment of Sound Transit’s proposed new LINK light rail system. This paper presents an overview of the design, which includes 4,300 ft of segmentally-lined bore twin tunnels and a deep mined station. With platforms located156 feet below grade, the station itself is only the second large-scale mined station in soil the US. Its complex geometry combined with variable soil conditions—sands, silt sand clays with slickensides—challenged the designer’s to come up with a SEM-based design that addresses the owner’s risk, cost and schedule concerns.

This paper reviews the historical background leading to the development of the project. It gives a description of the exploration program and resulting geological and ore reserve information together with plans for mining. A discussion is included of the three processes investigated for the project: 1. Rotary Hearth and Magnetic Concentration 2. Shaft Furnace and Electric Furnace 3. Rotary Kiln and Electric Furnace Results of pilot plant campaigns conducted at Fiskaa, Norway, and Riddle, Oregon, on the process chosen for the production of ferronickel are presented. The paper continues with a review of the considerations involved in selection of commercial plant equipment and concludes with comments on the current status of the project.
