Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problem in soft ground tunneling. It is important to attempt to make an assessment of the nature and quantity of the boulders, although in many cases, it will be impossible to do so with great accuracy. Boulders, can pose major problems for TBMs in terms of slowing down or halting the tunnel advance, cutter damage, and abrasive wear. Although proper selection of the TBM and the cutterhead can reduce the risks, ground uncertainties still cannot be eliminated. The paper reviews a case study of a 3480 mm diameter EPB-TBM in Toronto utilized for completion of 2.5 km tunnel in Glacial Till, crossing the CP railway, HWY 401, a creek, and a confined aquifer. Alignment consists of multiple horizontal curves including small radius curves (r=210 m) at shafts breakthrough. An unexpected boulder cluster lead the contractor to experience extreme damages to the screw conveyor, RFJ system and causing a crack in main motor plate which resulted in losing one of the six main motors. This paper reviews contractor’s solutions and includes discussion on specific claim resolution method used in this project that can be of great value in preparation of specification and GBR for similar projects.

During Hurricane Harvey over 60% of the 39 WWTPs, including the low-lying 25 MGD Sims North WWTP, and one third of the 382 lift stations owned and operated by the City of Houston were flooded resulting in extensive facility damage, loss of service and uncontrolled release of untreated wastewater into bayous and creeks. In response, the City has embarked on an effort to improve system resiliency by consolidating at-risk facilities with a network of deep sewer tunnels. These tunnels will provide secondary benefits to the collection system of augmenting the capacity of the existing 6,000 miles of sewer mains and lowering the collection system profile in poor performing areas. Investigations on the cost to mitigate the flood damages by raising the liquid stream processes at the Sims North WWTP is estimated at nearly $450 million. Instead of spending $450 million to raise the plant, the funds will be directed to providing a more robust and resilient wastewater system for the Sims basin area of Houston. The backbone of this new system is a 4.5-mile-long, 110 inch diameter deep gravity sewer tunnel that will convert a system heavily reliant on distributed lift stations to a majority gravity system with a deep consolidated lift station at the Sims South WWTP. This will also allow the City to address the flood prone infrastructure at Sims North and consolidate its operations into a single permitted outfall for this collection system. This approach is the outcome of a team effort focused on maximizing system resiliency and sustainability for the next 100 years. By thinking outside the box, the City of Houston will not only mitigate the flooding risk at Sims North WWTP, but also solve regulatory and operational challenges throughout the sewershed and deliver a winwin on multiple levels.

The aim of this research is the study of the WHIMS parameters on the improving process of a local (DD: Djebel Debbagh, East of Algeria) kaolin. The obtained results of performed XRF, SEM, and XRD characterization showed that this local material is an alumino-silicate containing kaolinite and halloysite with MnO and Fe2O3 impurities (respectively 39.30% and 34.67% alumina and 38.18% and 39.70% silica in both samples (DD2 and DD3). After homogenization, crushing, and milling, a multiparameters factorial experimentation (grain sizes, intensity, and dimension of matrix balls) showed that WHIMS is an effective process to improve the quality of this kaolin, mainly: removing their impurities. Dimensions of matrix balls (Db) = 2 cm, intensity of the applied magnetic field (I) = 1.5 T, and grain sizes (Dp) = > 100 < 250 μm) are the optimal values to reach 91.06% for manganese and 93.45% for iron as removing yield. The statistical analysis of these results sorted the investigation parameters and showed that Db has the highest and most significant influence on the recovery of iron and manganese particles. The magnetic field intensity (I) has a less important influence while the grain size has an average influence (positive on the iron recovery but a negative one on the recovery of manganese).

INTRODUCTION Flotation equipment is becoming more definitive in design as well as greater in dimension. The last ten years have witnessed the implementation of large flotation cells ranging in size from 28 to 85 cubic meters. However, small plants still operate with cells as small as 3 cubic meters. These changes have increased the operational sensitivity of the flotation system to the chemical reagents used. No scientific study has been undertaken to develop the relationship between the size of equipment and the response of reagents in the flotation system. Hence, this article is an attempt to present several observations from past experience for the purpose of stimulating future research in an area previously ignored and perhaps subsequently not used to advantage. CONVENTIONAL FLOTATION Recent advances in conventional flotation cell design have been made in two areas: a. Flotation cells are becoming larger, and b. Basic design of flotation cells has changed. They can be classified into two types: deep cell and shallow draft cell. Size and design changes of flotation cells have a greater effect on frother performance than on the performance of other chemical reagents. Hence, the discussion in the following sections is restricted to the impact of frothers in the flotation system. Flotation Cell Size The advent of increasing flotation cell size has resulted in the increase of frother consumption. There appears to be a correlation between reduced horsepower (kilowatt) consumption and increased frother consumption per ton of ore processed in the circuit. This is more prevalent when the frother chemistry remains unchanged. Another reason for increased frother consumption is the increased distance between the rotating central shaft and the lip of the cell for larger flotation machines. Increasing this distance results in increased surface area corresponding to the larger cell size. Reduced power input per ton combined with the need for longer, stronger load support of the froth bubble as a result of increasing cell size has resulted in the development of a new series of stronger and more persistent frothers. By the same token, these newer, stronger frothers are difficult to control when applied to the smaller cells. This is true even at lower dosages because the break point between too much frother and not enough frother for optimum metallurgy is normally very narrow. This problem is often exaggerated when operators have established an optimum setting for pulp level and air for the particular frother in use. Generally, the tendency is to operate the flotation cells simply by adjusting frother dosage. The increase in frother strength to accommodate the large cells often results in the realization, after a retrofit, that the existing pump box or sump which is still handling the same volume of concentrate is no longer adequate in size. Flotation Cell Design The two most common flotation cell designs installed during the past ten years are the deep cell and the shallow draft cell. The deep cell provides for complete mixing of air and pulp at the bottom of the cell. The shallow draft cell does all the mixing/pumping in the bottom haft of the cell whereas the mixing of the air is performed further up the shaft and is brought into contact with the pulp midway up the vortex. There are many preferences for one or the other. It is the author&apos;s contention that both designs have very valid concepts and must simply be suited to the particular situation as required by the operator. The following comments are subjective observations which should be explored in greater detail. The deep cell mixes both air and pulp together at the bottom of the cell requiring a full depth ascending of the homogenized air to the surface to form the froth layer. This design, in combination with charged air, provides for good concentrate grade control under adverse conditions of selectivity, especially when faced with a fine grind and a slime-laden gangue. A selective frother can be applied without a competitive loss in recovery. One of the conditions for good selectivity in this environment is operating at medium pulp solids concentration in the range of twenty-six to thirty-four per cent (26-34%). When a higher solids concentration is used in combination with a coarse grind, it becomes difficult to maintain the same recovery with a selective frother due to higher pulp viscosity. This condition sometimes results in an unacceptable coalescence of the air bubbles as they ascend the full height of the deep cell. The increased pulp viscosity at higher solids concentration can also retard the flotation kinetics. The combination of decreased surface area of dispersed air and slower kinetics can result in reduced recovery causing coarse particles to continue to drop

Though the mining industry is beset with problems-a broad slump in metal prices, a rash of acquisitions and takeover attempts, rising capital costs, and an aggressive Canadian energy program-there was an under-current of optimism at the 1981 AMC conference that&apos;s been missing at industry meetings in recent years. The industry anticipates a turnaround in the 1980s, buoyed perhaps by the new spirit of cooperation from the Reagan administration. For the first time in years, it appears that Washington and the mining industry share mutual goals for developing the nation&apos;s resources. A number of prominent Reagan officials were on hand during the three-day conference in Denver, September 28-30, to reassure conferees that restrictions plaguing energy and minerals development would be eased. Interior Secretary James Watt and other government speakers promised cooperation in bringing balance to federal public lands policies, a review of regulations that have hampered the industry, and prompt action on domestic minerals policy. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., assistant interior secretary for energy and minerals, said, "It is our intent to dismantle the overhearing bureaucracy that has stifled mineral and energy exploration. We know that Interior&apos;s rules have shackled the mining industry in recent years, and we know that those rules must be eased." Miller noted that the administration will not permit mining on national park lands or wildlife refuges, but added that "we must assess a variety of uses of public lands ... we will restore lands to multiple use where practical." EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch assured industry representatives that the administration intends to work within environmental laws and with Congress to review and revise water, soil, and air pollution policies. "We have a strong commitment to see that there are major mid-course corrections" of air regulations, Gorsuch said. Support from these "new friends in Washington" will be crucial in light of the serious problems pressuring the industry. Copper prices have plunged to almost three-year lows and prices for molybdenum, gold, and silver have slumped. Earnings are down and today&apos;s high interest rates prevent a quick turnaround. Companies are on edge after the recent takeovers of Kennecott, St. Joe Minerals, and Texasgulf Though the companies may benefit from the major injection of capital that large energy firms can provide, many observers fear the new parent companies won&apos;t be willing or able to survive the cyclical metal markets. Arco and Gulf Resources, for example, have been criticized for closing Anaconda&apos;s Montana copper facility and the Bunker Hill unit in Idaho, respectively. Canada&apos;s national energy program has brought additional pressure on the industry. This policy, which emphasizes Canadian majority ownership of the country&apos;s energy sources, resulted in acquisition of Texasgulf&apos;s Kidd Creek lead-zinc-silver complex by Canadian and French interests. In response, the American Mining Congress adopted two resolutions on takeovers. One calls for the US government to review laws regulating tender offers and takeovers "to better ensure that principles of fairness and sound investment policy govern such transactions.&apos;&apos; The other asks the government to demand "fairness and reciprocity" as a basis for US policy governing international trade in minerals and investment relations with other countries. AMC&apos;s shopping list included four other priority goals, aimed primarily at the Interior Department: • Prompt implementation of Interior&apos;s efforts to bring order and balance to rules governing access to public lands for exploration and development. • Statement by the President of a comprehensive and coherent domestic minerals policy. • Amendment of the Clean Air Act to remove impediments to productivity and barriers to economic development that are not necessary to essential goals of the act. • Development of new approaches to better achieve worker health and safety in the most cost-effective manner without penalizing productivity. Almost 6000 mining industry executives attended the 1981 convention-the largest in AMC&apos;s 84-year history. As in years past, the conference offered a wide spectrum of presentations-nearly 100 papers in 26 sessions-ranging from commodity forecasts to the latest technical achievements. New Administration Stockpile Goals The minerals availability session included a presentation on management of the minerals stockpile by Paul K. Kruege r of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Krueger notes that rather than providing incentives for development of a domestic raw materials industry, the government has "a history of providing disincentives to industry." In mining industries, he adds, the rate of productivity growth has been -6% over the last six or seven years. Krueger feels there will be a major change under the Reagan administration. Currently, there are several methodologies to assess ground vibrations from blasting. Of all available methodologies, one that is becoming more important is the waveform superposition or signature hole technique. This technique is based on a signature waveform assigned to each hole to build the complete waveform for the whole production blast, using the convolution between the time initiation sequence and the signature hole waveform. In the basic methodology of the signature hole technique, the waveform hole-to-hole is assumed to be the same. Several studies and field tests have proven that the waveform hole-to-hole, even in ideal rock mass conditions (rock mass with little or no joint system), changes. In addition to distance or confinement, other factors that could change the waveform hole-to-hole include different geologic paths from the source to the monitoring point and a different energy output of each hole, due to hole loading, explosive composition and/or contamination, priming, etc. These factors result in varying waveforms generated for each hole, making the waveform produced by each hole a somewhat random process. There is available in the literature some proposals to include variability in the waveform hole-to-hole, but the parameters involved are complex and difficult to estimate. In this paper, the variability in the signature waveform hole-to-hole in a blast event was recorded through a field test, and a proposal to include signature waveform variability to develop an equation based on the Fourier series is presented. This methodology is the basis for a future signature hole analysis using a Monte Carlo scheme, taking into account the variation of the amplitude and the frequency content of the waveform hole-to-hole in a production blast event.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry&apos; broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. An atomic force microscopy (AFM) image analysis has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of hydroxamic acid collector, i.e., octanohydroxamic acid (OHA), on malachite in aqueous solutions. AFM images show that hydroxamic acid collector adsorbs strongly on malachite mainly in the form of insoluble copper hydroxamate complex. Increasing the collectors’ concentration and the adsorption time both increase the adsorption of hydroxamic collectors on malachite. Results from the attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) also show that the collector adsorbs strongly onto malachite, with strong absorbance spectra being detected, and the ATR-FTIR results confirm those as obtained by AFM. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of malachite. The findings of present study also show that AFM image analysis is a powerful tool for the study of the hydroxamic acid collectors’ adsorption on malachite surface and it can help with the development of novel collectors for malachite flotation.

Understanding the variability of sulfur and calorific value in coal seams is critical to planning mining operations and marketing the mined coal. In this study, statistical and geostatistical techniques were used to explore the underlying spatial trends present in a large coal deposit. Eight prediction models for the sulfur content of the coal seam were developed. Six of the models were created using geostatistical techniques, while the remaining two models were created using other techniques. The performance of each model was examined by conducting cross validation exercises. The results of the study showed that very pronounced trends and anisotropies were present in the sample data, which had to be accounted for in the modeling. The study found that a cokriging model using sulfur and ash is the best prediction model for predicting sulfur content in this coal reserve.

Compliance standards for respirable dust which are reduced because of high quartz concentrations have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quartz-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quartz particles of a mine dust are "pure," then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. If, however, the quartz is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.

It has been reported previously that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with Poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO). In this study it is determined that palygorskite associated with the Florida dolomite samples is responsible for their flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of the dolomite samples from different locations and its relevance to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

The Highland Valley Copper partnership was formed in July 1986 and was the logical result of a mine with a large ore reserve but no adequate mill, and a mine with a large, modem mill but dwindling ore reserves. The original partners -Cominco and Lornex -were joined in January 1988 by Highmont Mining Co. which contributed a two-line concentrator. During 1988/1989, the Highmont mill was moved 7.5 km to adjoin the Lornex mill, forming what is now called the Highland mill, with a current nominal capacity of 130 000 tonnes per day. The mine is located 220 km northeast of Vancouver, British Columbia and is close to four communities in which personnel make their home: Logan Lake, Merritt, Ashcroft, and Kamloops. The map in Figure 1 2.2 shows the general area. Kamloops is a major service centre and is serviced by two railways, two major roads and a regional airport.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has conducted studies both in coal and noncoal mines to evaluate methods for sampling and separating diesel particulates from mineral dust aerosols. The agency is investigating size separation techniques to distinguish between diesel particulate and respirable coal mine dust. Additionally, ashing techniques have been used to distinguish diesel particulate from mineral dust in metal and nonmetal mines. As part of these studies, personal exposures to diesel particulate for various mining occupations have been measured. This paper describes the measurement techniques and summarizes the exposure levels for various underground mining operations.

Design of chain pillars in a longwall mine setting is one of the main engineering controls on the global and local stability of the mine. Challenges with roof instabilities, floor heaves, and pillar failures can be alleviated, to some extent, by careful design of gateroad configurations and chain pillars. This work investigates three different alternative designs in a three-entry-system gateroad configuration with an inter-panel barrier in a longwall mine in Virginia. Starting with the current design, which has faced challenges such as excessive floor heave, a geomechanical model developed in 3DEC software is validated by monitoring in-situ pillar stress in the yield, abutment, and barrier pillars in the mine. Next, three different chain pillar designs are evaluated in the model with a focus on roof sagging, floor heave, and pillar average stress. Results show the relationships among the alternative designs and instabilities associated with roof, pillar, and floor in the study mine, providing insights for optimizing longwall mining designs in deep-cover settings.

In this paper, the results of bench scale testing of five different flotation processes to separate dolomite from phosphate are discussed. The effectiveness of each process interms of phosphate recovery and MgO content in the concentrate is used together with the reagent consumption as the basis of comparison. The water quality is found to play a major role in the performance of these processes. Effect of water hardness as well as other parameters are discussed.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7, 200 kg (15, 900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metal loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change and fewer than 1 % got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.

The application of remote sensing for environmental measurements is already being utilized. Aircraft mounted imaging spectroscopy has been utilized to evaluate areas of historical mining operations as well as active mine sites. To the extent that remote sensing can provide more sensitive, cost effective, and timely monitoring potential, the technology is of interest to the industry. Questions remain about the application and validation of the data and the availability of the technology in the private sector. This presentation will discuss some of the potential uses, benefits, and concerns related to remote sensing and efforts to monitor the technology&apos;s development.

The construction of the continuing expansion of the Los Angeles Metro System has required the construction of eight new station structures. One contractor proposed, as a construction alternative for the support of excavation of the Hollywood/Vine Station, the use of soil-mix walls instead of the conventional soldier piles and wood lagging. Soldier piles and shotcrete or wood lagging support systems had been generally used on the other sub-way station excavations constructed to date throughout the system. Immediately east of that station and in almost exactly the same geology, the Hollywood/Western Station was being excavated at the same time using a conventional support system. This paper com-pares the performance of these two support systems in the alluvial soils of the Los Angeles Basin.

This paper describes experiences with methane and hydrogen sulfide gas encountered during design and construction of a sewer tunnel in rock, in Rochester, N.Y. Design explorations are summarized, including geologic setting, measurements of gasses in test borings, laboratory analyses of gas samples, and measurements of gas pressure and flow rates from a sealed borehole. Contract specifications regarding gas are outlined. Results of the Contractor&apos;s additional explorations and testing are presented, along with a description of selected equipment and provisions for ventilation and degassification.

The Brunswick Mine, a Division of Noranda Inc., produces zinc, lead, copper, and bulk lead-zinc concentrates through underground mining of a large massive sulphide deposit. The mining method employed is longhole open stoping with delayed backfilling. In 1996 Brunswick began a review of its mining methods and backfilling operations. In 1997 the decision was made to convert the backfill system from cemented and uncemented rockfill to paste backfill prepared from mill tailings. This paper will describe the features of the backfill preparation and distribution systems, review the handling of technical issues, and discuss experiences since plant commissioning.
