On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers' radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950's level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner's lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently developed a series of models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with a medium-sized surface blasthole drill shroud with a dry dust collector system. CFD models were constructed in ANSYS FLUENT Version 15. Previously run experiments conducted in the NIOSH full-scale drill shroud laboratory were utilized to validate the models. The setup values in CFD models were calculated using experimental data obtained from the drill shroud laboratory and measurements of test material particle size. Subsequent simulation results were compared with the experimental data for test scenarios, including 0.14 m3/s (300 cfm) bailing airflow with 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios and 0.24 m3/s (500 cfm) bailing airflow cases with 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1 dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios. For the 2:1 and 3:1 ratios, results showed the calculated dust concentrations from the CFD models were within the 95% confidence intervals of the lab experimental dust concentrations. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, to calculate the model dust input, and to validate the models based on experimental data. Problem regions were identified and revealed by the simulation of a dry dust collector system. The simulation results could be used for future development of dust control methods for a surface mine blasthole drill shroud. INTRODUCTION In surface mines, production drilling is an essential process in blasting which fractures the hard rock overburden for removal. Holes with a predetermined pattern, diameter, and depth are drilled into the overburden to introduce explosives. During the drilling process, considerable amounts of respirable dust are produced. Past research conducting area sampling at blasthole drills has documented time-weighted average respirable dust concentrations ranging from 8.68 to 95.15 mg/m3 [1] and 1.04 to 52.30 mg/m3 [2]. These high dust concentrations, which may contain silica, can lead to respirable dust over-exposures for the drill operator, drill helper, and other personnel in the vicinity. These over-exposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is ultimately fatal. In order to prevent the development of silicosis to mine workers, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulates the exposure to respirable dust. For metal/nonmetal (M/NM) mines, MSHA has adopted the threshold limit values recommended in 1973 by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) [3]. The total airborne dust standard is 10 mg/m3. However, if the sample contains greater than 1 percent quartz (the most common form of crystalline silica), a respirable dust standard is calculated with the following equation: Respirable dust standard = (10 mg/m3) / (% respirable quartz + 2)"

Mining has always been among the most hazardous of occupations, and with the increasing demand for coal and minerals, safety in mines assumes even greater importance. Worldwide, underground miners are being exposed to noise and respirable dust hazards associated with roof bolt drilling. These hazards are now being understood to cause irreparable damage to the health of miners. The objective of this research was to discover if a Polycrystalline Diamond Cutter (PDC) drill bit generates less respirable dust and hazardous noise than a competing Tungsten Carbide (WC) bit, in dry vacuum drilling. In order to control the drill parameters the drilling tests have been conducted in a laboratory setting. The results were met by determining the quantities of dust and noise generated using each drill bit and analyzing those levels by using monitoring devices and software to collect the data. This paper includes information on experiment setup, equipment used, drilling parameters, and data collected. The test results suggest that there are noticeable trends that the PDC bits produce less dust than WC bits but more testing is needed to substantiate these trends.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of lab tests to evaluate the respirable dust removal capacity of an industrial air-cleaning fan. Limestone and coal dust were tested separately in NIOSH’s full-scale drill table simulator at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD). Gravimetric samplers with Dorr-Oliver Cyclones and 37-mm filters were used at two upstream and four downstream locations inside and outside of the drill shroud chamber. There were six tests performed for both the limestone and coal dust experiments. In the limestone tests, an average respirable dust concentration of 98.86 mg/m3 was achieved upstream of the air-cleaning fan. The filter results show that the averaged respirable limestone dust reductions were 7.84%, 8.81%, 10.94%, and 18.02% at the four sampling locations downstream of the fan. In the coal tests, upstream samplers achieved an average of 129.03 mg/m3 of respirable coal dust. The averaged dust reductions were 9.54%, 9.83%, 18.54%, and 19.21% at the four downstream sampling points. The results indicate limited cost benefits of using this technology because of the relatively low dust reductions determined from this laboratory study.

Joints may be taken into account when using numerical modeling as an aid to mine design by embedding joints in the model. When using the popular finite element method, say UT3PC, a pre-analysis step is necessary, Step 0. This step is for the computation of equivalent properties of a representative elementary volume of jointed rock (REV) in the model. This Step 0 is taken before Steps 1, 2 and 3 for specification of a rock properties file, generation of the mesh, and model analysis are taken. A brief explanation of equivalent properties and several examples aid in explaining the details of Step 0. Focus is on procedures, input files, and output to show ease of computation. Theoretical details are relegated to references (e.g. Pariseau 2022). Comparisons of safety factor distributions about example mine excavations with direct scaling from mine observations then offer some insights concerning equivalent properties, especially strengths.

Simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments on a pyritic ore from Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico, were carried out. Mineral characterization, agitated leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic tests results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted in a temperature range of 40 to 80 °C, an oxygen pressure range of 87.5 to 200 psi, and cyanide concentration range of 0.8 to 1.2 weight percent in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. Dissolution rates of 81 to 86 percent were achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 weight percent NaCN and processing time of one hour.

The 31st annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. Each year, one living inductee, two Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, an industry partnership award, as well as a special citation, are recognized by the MFSW for their respective contributions to the mining industry. James D. Toole, past president and chief executive officer of Southwest Energy LLC, will be the Hall of Fame inductee, guest of honor, and featured speaker at the awards banquet. Toole founded Southwest Energy LLC in 1973 and is credited with introducing innovative explosive technology, providing even greater value to its mining customers. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Joseph M. Keane, principal metallurgical engineer for SGS Metcon Research/KD Engineering, and Sean D. Dessureault, associate professor at the University of Arizona. Keane is recognized for his metallurgical expertise, especially in design development and pollution abatement. Dessureault is recognized for his advanced mining research, with more than 25 journal publications, and his entrepreneurship as the founder and chief executive officer of two mineral-related companies. To honor mining?s past, the hall of fame will induct Bartolomé de Medina for his invention of the patio process for recovering silver; Ben Williams for his management of the Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee, AZ; Charles E. Mills for his contributions at Morenci and Inspiration Copper and founding Apache Powder Co. and The Valley National Bank; John S. Finlay and Edwin B. Royle for their invention of the mucking machine; and Louis Caryl Graton for his ore deposits research and teaching economic geology at Harvard University.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), designed and constructed by Bouygues Civil Works Florida between 2009 and 2014, was a Public Private Partnership between the Miami Access Tunnel Concessionaire, Florida Department of Transport, Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. The project comprises dual 11.3m internal diameter, 1.27km long, twin lane road tunnels running between Watson and Dodge islands under the main shipping channel in Biscayne Bay. Five cross passages (CPs), spaced at 200m centre to centre, provide emergency access between the two tunnels, as shown in Figure 1.The CPs were constructed by open-face excavation methods but the particular geological conditions at the project site (loose and variable carbonate sedimentary strata with very high permeability) required specific ground treatment solutions to provide safe excavation conditions and to ensure the long term serviceability of the permanent works construction. Where access allowed, ground treatment was performed from the ground surface using deep-mixing techniques; however, at two locations (CP2 and CP3) surface access was restricted and ground treatment by freezing, performed from the tunnels, was required. The CPs are 12.3m long with an excavation diameter of 5.8m and are located up to 30m below the water table partly or wholly within the Key Largo limestone (termed Layer S7 in the ground model). Layer S7 is a coralline limestone having a metastable honeycomb structure and high variable porosity. At CP2 the upper portion of the excavation was within the overlying Anastasia Formation limestone (Layer S6), comprising a highly permeable coquina. The geological profile along the project is shown in Figure 2.This paper presents aspects of the freeze design and the risk mitigation necessary to successfully achieve the construction of the CPs in the unique geological conditions."

In modern industry, cost and productivity concerns and environmental concerns are sometimes incompatible, but at other times only appear to be incompatible. Surface disposal of wastes from coal preparation plants appears to be an area of the production system with little opportunity for initiating measures which cut costs and concurrently benefit the environment. However, improving the recovery efficiency of fine coal circuitry can cost-effectively reduce the plant waste environmental burden by a substantial amount. Studies at Jim Walter Resources indicate that fine-coal waste measuring 50% ash contains over 50% recoverable, marketable coal. Modifications to the plant circuitry which reduce the amount of misplaced coal in the fine-coal waste stream could substantially reduce the volume of fine waste disposed aboveground. Studies at Jim Walter Resources indicated that episodic overloads of the vacuum filters in the fine-coal circuits at the preparation plants were a source of misplaced coal in the fine-waste stream of the cleaning plants. To improve the filtration rate and reduce overload episodes, conventional rotary blowers were replaced with high pressure air blasters on most of the filters. Subsequent testing indicated that measurable benefits can be derived from this modification.

Deposits of ferromanganese crust containing cobalt and nickel occur on the seafloor in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. This paper describes developmental flotation metallurgy to separate crust from its associated substrate gangue. Important variables in ferromanganese crust flotation include reagent type, aeration rate, conditioning time and agitation intensity, pH, temperature, water type, and feed size distribution. Flotation in seawater of minus 600 ~m (-28 mesh) material assaying 6.2% Mn, 0.2% Co, and 0.13% Ni with diesel fuel-crude tall oil-sulfonate collectors produces concentrates assaying 15% Mn, 0.6% Co, and 0.3% Ni with recoveries of 89-95% while removing 62% of the feed weight.

Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports which can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the United States has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems' effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a Distinct Element Method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process. The mineral industry uses significant amounts of water in processing. Thus, sustainable practices with the processing of ores are of critical importance. An impact tester was used to measure the adhesion force between particles and a glass disk [1,2]. A removal force was caused by the impact of the disk/particle containing a puck with a stopper. Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory [3] was used to determine the interfacial energy between the particles and the substrate. Capillary condensation of water can occur between the particle and surfaces in humid environments. The adhesion of particles on rough surfaces has been studied previously [4-10]. The research presented herein combines both variables to separate particle types with minimal water usage.

As the mining industry faces increased challenges with declining ore grades and harder to access deposits, operating mine sites in an environmentally responsible and economically viable manner will require innovations that improve efficiency in energy logistics, and automation. Technological advancements in mining have been successful primarily because of the willingness and capability of these solutions to share information with one another, for example OEM payload systems sending information to Fleet Management Systems, and in turn Fleet Management Systems interfacing to ERP systems. To promote and facilitate the sharing of data, there has been a push towards open standards with initiatives led by organizations like ISO, ISA, EMESRT, and GMG. These efforts are aimed at creating a more collaborative and interoperable environment within the sector. However, when it comes to implementing autonomous solutions, a different trend dominates— closed-stack solutions. These closed stack solutions not only prohibit a mine site from selecting best-of-breed solutions, by blocking the competition from entering the market, they also risk slowing innovation that could help overcome the challenges the mining industry faces. Open Autonomy, an internationally published standard that allows any FMS to work with any Autonomous solution, breaks this closed-stack approach and invites competition from other industries. This competition comprises of autonomous suppliers from other industries and manufacturers of smaller, civil-sized haul trucks. The availability and capabilities of these smaller-sized autonomous haul trucks will help tackle the challenges of responsibly and economically mining lower quality ore grades and mining harder to access deposits.

The U.S. mining industry has made progress in reducing accidents and injuries, but interpreting safety data remains difficult due to changes in workforce size and productivity. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) uses tools like the pattern of violation (POV) and significant & substantial (S&S) calculator to monitor safety, though these have limitations. To address this, we developed an information entropybased risk (IER) index that combines various safety metrics, including citations, penalties and injuries. Using data from 2011 to 2020, the IER index was validated with statistical methods and clustering algorithms to ensure it accurately reflects risk levels. The analysis showed clear differences in risk across mining sites, proving the index’s usefulness. The IER index was then applied to a coal mine to demonstrate its effectiveness. This new tool can help mining companies better assess their safety risks and take action to improve workplace safety.

Large volumes of slags, with varying mineralogical and geochemical characteristics, are produced annually by the ferrous and nonferrous metallurgical industry. Most of them are considered as potential secondary resources and may be valorized, following the principles of circular economy, for the recovery of critical elements, including energy transition metals. Apart from the economic benefits, valorization of slags may contribute to the competitiveness of the metal industry and the conservation of natural resources. Valorization also results in minimization of environmental impacts on soils and waters in slag disposal areas, due to the prevention of solubilization and subsequent migration of potentially hazardous elements. The present study utilizes ferronickel (FeNi) slag for the production of alkali-activated materials. The effects of the main experimental parameters, including sodium hydroxide (NaOH) molarity, silica/sodium oxide (SiO2 /Na2O) molar ratio in the activating solution, precuring and curing time, curing temperature and aging period on several properties of the final products, are assessed.

The construction mineral aggregates industry--the largest industry on a tonnage basis--is threatened with large shortages in the near future. Ironically, these common minerals which include sand, gravel, and stone are among the most plentiful in the earth's crust. However, as these minerals are low in value and used in large volumes, they are extremely sensitive to transport cost, e.g., a haul of 20 miles doubled the delivered cost of mineral aggregates. Consequently, these minerals must be located close to points of demand to have economic usefulness. But the development of new deposits is virtually impossible near many urban areas for legal, sociological and economic reasons. The spector of unfinished urban transport systems, curtailed residential construction, and a general deterioration of the physical urban plant, looms as a direct consequent of future mineral aggregate shortages in the U. S. metropolitan areas. The shortages of mineral aggregates in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area (G.N.Y.M.A.) are prototypical of the shortages faced by the U. S. Metropolitan areas. This paper presents an economic analysis of the consequences of not considering the broad aspects of conservation economics as a major component of resource management. The needless annual cost for the G.N.Y.M.A. is shown to be $30 million.

There are many different machine design parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of speeds. mining operations will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates that result in non optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency with two operating modes. Overall, the results match the theory, and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, when operated at full capacity, with an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. Using a fixed feed rate, the crushers had 4-14% higher production when operating at the optimal speed. Secondary analysis showed that the power draw consistency and magnitude of power spikes could also be improved by optimizing the cone speed. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive, more energy efficient, impove process control and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine

Mining activity in the Segovia region in NE Colombia is the main source of employment in the local economy. This has created major problems of illegality and informality mining associated with a high social and environmental impact, as inefficient technologies are used and high consumption of toxic substances required in the process of gold recovery by amalgamation and cyanidation. In this work is presented mineralogical characterization of six local mills and studied beneficiation processes developed in them. With the results presented a proposed plant design that eliminates the use of mercury by replacing gravity concentration processes taking advantage of the characteristics of the treated material. Significant results were obtained regarding the recovery of precious metals and present a methodology that can be replicated in other mineral beneficiation plants that use gold amalgamation processes. This implies a significant reduction in mercury use and decreased risk of human contamination associated with this.
