Why would a company in its right management mind risk a fuel conversion program on a fuel that can't burn if it's too wet or too dry, too hot or too cold, too coarse or too fine, or doesn't have enough Btu's to supplement good combustion? On December 23, 1981, two months ago, we finished our first ten years of burning lignite -- this unconventional coal. It is from that experience that I am qualified to address you today. As some of you here probably already know, my company, Texas Utilities Generating Company, has pioneered the utilization of Texas lignite for electric power generation on a large scale, and I think it is fair to say that we have done this pioneering work largely on our own. Some of us feel like Noah did when he built the arc! I have titled this presentation "The First Lignite Decision" because our company was the first to make this major decision in Texas in the mid-1960's. It was a big decision, and at the time, perhaps a bold one. When you look at the conditions that existed in the mid-1960's, you can see why.

The effect of addition of a flotation collector (dodecylammonium chloride) on grinding of quartz has been studied. The data obtained are correlated with the results of tests conducted under similar chemical conditions to study influence of these additives on relevant basic sub-processes (primary breakage, pulp fluidity, and dispersion and flocculation of ground products). Such correlations suggest that the role of chemical additives in grinding is determined by their cumulative influence on the above mentioned basic properties of the system.

INTRODUCTION An innovative Ø.1-MGD (378.5-m3/day) biological and phyicochemical wastewater treatment system at Hancock, Massachusetts, USA, has been treating the domestic sewage generated from the four-season Jiminy Peak timeshare resort since 1985. The influent raw sewage is collected and equalized in an equalization tank, then biologically treated by two rotating biological contactors (RBC). A portion of the RBC effluent is discharged to a secondary sedimentation tank to simulate conventional waste treatment by a conventional RBC system. For parallel treatment the remaining portion of the RBC effluent is discharged to an innovative Sandfloat (SASF-8) clarifier to simulate a two-stage biological and physicochemical treatment by RBC-Sandfloat. Both secondary sedimentation effluent and Saandfloat effluent are later combined together and discharged to a tertiary sand filter and two UV disinfection'units for final polishing. The operation and performance data of Jiminy Peak plant in the period of May 1985 to March 1988 was fully documented in the Lenox Institute technical report No. LIR/Ø3-88/292 (391 pages, March 1988). This report presents only background information and complete plant data in the period of April 1988 to January 1989. Dr. Lawrence K. Wang and Mr. James P. Van Dyke have been the Consulting Engineer and Director of Special Projects, respectively, for the Jiminy Peak Project since 1985. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Jimmy Peak, Inc., Hancock, Massachusetts, has designed and constructed a secondary wastewater treatment system consisting of preliminary/primary treatment facilities, two rotating biological contactors, a dissolved air flotation clarifier, a secondary sedimentation clarifier, a sand filter and two ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units. Total average wastewater flow is approximately Ø.1 ) (378.5 cubic meters per day). In accordance with the Consulting Engineer's preliminary design, the total wastewater stream is initially collected and equalized by an equalization tank, and then biologically treated by rotating biological contactors (RBC). Part of the RBC effluent is diverted to a Krofta Sandfloat (SASF-8) for physicochemical clarification in order to simulate an innovative RBC-Sandfloat two-stage waste treatment system. The remaining part of the RBC effluent is diverted to a sedimentation tank for secondary clarification in order to siumulate a conventional secondary RBC-sedimentation waste treatment system for the purpose of parallel comparison. Both Sandfloat effluent and sedimentation effluent are later combined together and discharged to the subsequent sand filter and UV disinfection unit for final polishing. Figure 1 shows the flow diagram of Jiminy Peak Plant. The Massachusetts Clean Waters Act (M.G.L.c.2l,s.26-53) was amended by Chapter 246 of the Acts of 1973 to authorize the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Quality Engineering (DEQE), Division of water Pollution Control, Boston, Massachusetts, to regulate discharges into all waters of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including groundwaters. The DEQE regulates discharges through the issuance of discharge permits which impose limitations on the amount of pollutants which may be discharged in the effluent, together with monitoring and reporting requirements and other conditions to insure adequate treatment of all liquid wastes prior to discharge. The DEQE reviewed the application submitted on behalf of Jiminy Peak, Inc. for a permit to discharge sanitary wastes from the Jiminy Peak secondary wastewater treatment system located off Brodie Mountain Road, Hancock, Massachusetts, and subsequently developed the conditions contained in the Groundwater Discharge Permit No. Ø-188. More specifically, Jiminy Peak, Inc. (i.e. the permittee) has been authorized to discharge into the ground from the Jimmy Peak secondary wastewater treatment facilities for which the Permit No. Ø-188 was issued, a treated effluent

This is a shortened version of the paper ?The Methane-Air Explosion Hazard Within Coal Mine Gobs published in the 2013 volume of SME Transactions (Brune, 2013, pp. 376-390). This paper analyzes the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of methane-air mixtures in the mined-out gobs of underground longwall coal mines. Evidence from numerous mine explosions suggests that explosive methane zones can form within longwall gobs. Explosions and fires resulting from these methane accumulations have led to severe and fatal injuries to the miners, including the explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, where 29 miners lost their lives April 5, 2010.The paper also reviews current research on numerical modeling of gas flows in longwall gobs and outlines how targeted injection of nitrogen into gobs can effectively reduce the volume of such explosive methane zones. The paper concludes that comprehensive monitoring of gas compositions, along the accessible fringes of the gobs along with inertization, improved ventilation schemes and further research are necessary to control this explosion hazard and make mining operations safe. Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. (SDA) designed a tunnel project that fulfilled the Sustainability Objectives of Social Equity, Environment, and Economics. The project translated the principles of Sustainable Development into actions that lessened the impacts of construction on environment, lives of residents, businesses, traffic, and other social systems (i.e., shopping, recreational, and educational). The project involved the construction of a 16,108 feet of 84 inch diameter sanitary sewer interceptor by tunneling 40 feet beneath the ground surface through difficult geological and hydrogeological settings. An effective public information and stakeholders relationship program was developed to achieve the stated objectives of sustainability.

Agriculture in the United States today is becoming more and more a business, rather than a way of life. In the light of this, it behooves the farm-supply industries that provide the American farmer with his tools of production--feed, fertilizer, machinery, and the like--to give even greater attention than they have in the past to meeting the needs of the farmer-businessmen they are serving. Increasing competition among the companies that make up these industries merely accentuates this need for better service. An opportunity for such improved service, not yet fully realized, exists in the fertilizer industry today. That opportunity lies in the increased transportation of fertilizer ingredients by water. However, before the benefits inherent in this increased water movement of fertilizers can be fully realized, certain obstacles must be met and overcome. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the nature and magnitude of this opportunity, to point out some of the roadblocks and the steps that can be, or are being, taken to remove them, and to indicate some of the rewards that would logically stem from success in these efforts.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Li-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions, including thermal, mechanical and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining program is conducting research to prevent and respond to lithium-ion battery fires in battery-electric vehicles in the mining industry. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different suppression systems including dry chemical, Class D extinguishing powder and water mist for lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack fires. The effects of activation time and release time of the water-mist system on the suppression of the LFP battery (a type of Li-ion battery) fires were studied. The results of this study may be helpful for developing strategic firefighting and response plans for battery-powered vehicles used in mining.

Editor&apos;s note: Minerals concentration is a disparate area, one involving many disciplines. Flotation, flocculation, reagents, microbial processes, gravity and magnetic separation, and the areas of coal and oil shale - concentration is relevant to all of these. In his article, Nagaraj reviews the latest developments and findings in concentration that have ocurred during the past year. Flotation The Monograph Series "Development in Mineral Processing," (Elsevier, 1985) was devoted to "Flotation of Sulfide Minerals." This volume has 26 articles covering the aspects of flotation chemistry, process development, plant design and equipment, and modeling and process control. The numerous articles on sulfide flotation had one recurring theme - the role of electrochemical processes and redox potentials in flotation and depression. Significant advances have been made in this area. A differential desorption-reflotation process was developed for the beneficiation of calcitic phosphate pebble (Hsieh and Lehr, Industrial Engineering and Chemistry, 1985). The carbonate and phosphate minerals were first separated from silica using fatty acid and the modifiers diphosphonic acid and HF. The collector on phosphate was then desorbed using sulfuric acid, and calcite was selectively floated without additional collector. A two-stage conditioning - initially at pH 10, followed by that at pH < 4.5 - with sodium oleate was developed to improve the separation between apatite and dolomite (Moudgil and Chanchani, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, MMP, 1985). Separation of Mussorie rock phosphate in India from gangue calcite, dolomite, silicates, pyrite, and carbonaceous impurities was achieved with a three-stage flotation only on -75 µm (-200 mesh) fraction (Vaman Rao et al., International Journal of Mineral Processing, IJMP, 1985). The separation of fine SiC whiskers from other products of coked rice hulls by immiscible liquid and froth flotation was achieved using M1BC, pine oil, and mineral spirits (Parekh and Goldberger, MMP, 1985). Flotation was more economical. The carrier flotation separation of hematite fines from quartz fines was effected using coarse hematite as a carrier and oleic acid and ferric chloride (Cristoveanu and Meech, CIM Bulletin, 1985). Potash recovery from brines by laboratory-pan solar evaporation and amine flotation was discussed by Foot and Juiatt (Salts and Brines &apos;85, Proceedings, 1985). Flotation in a 45-kg/h (99-lb per hour) unit recovered more than 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates containing 28% and 62% K2O, respectively. The effects of fresh concrete into cement and aggregate by a single-step flotation process in aqueous suspension was described (Naegle, Chemical Engineering Science, 1985). The physico-chemical principles for the selective separation of proteins from mixtures using flotation were discussed by Ostermaier and Dobias (Colloids & Surfactants, 1985). Selective flocculation of hematite from silica was studied by Bagster and Mcllvenny (IJMP, 1985). Selective flocculation was more favorable with more highly charged anionic polyacrylamides and with high molecular weight. The cationic and non-ionic polymers flocculated both minerals. In minerals mixtures, there appeared to be very little selectivity unless a combination of dispersant and electrolyte was used. The effect of dissolved minerals species, such as Cu, Fe, and Ni on flocculation of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite, and covellite was studied by Acar and Somasundaran (SME-AIME, 1985). Reagents There were some major advances made in reagent development for the minerals processing industry. Cyanamid introduced several classes of collectors, one of which - the diaryl monothiophosphates as acid circuit col¬lectors of sulfides and oxidesulfide ores - was commercialized in 1985. The monothiophosphates are more stable and powerful collectors than the xanthates and dithiophosphates. Hydrolyzed dithiophosphate containing 80% monothio and 20% dithiophosphate was found to give optimum recovery of copper from crude cementation precipitate and separation of Cu and Ni sulfides from matte (Akimova et al., Obogashch, Tonkov, Rud, OTR, 1985). The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a rule in 2014 that required numerous changes in compliance dust sampling requirements for coal mine operators. Two key parts of this rule were the lowering of the respirable coal mine dust standard from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 and requiring operators of underground coal mines to use a continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) for compliance sampling. The CPDM currently approved for compliance sampling is equipped with a display that provides miners with in-shift information on their respirable dust exposure. The goal was to provide an indication of a potential overexposure and empower the miner and mine operator to implement changes in controls and/or operating practices to prevent an overexposure from occurring.

Others expect that mines will soon have autonomous electric vehicles running around the clock. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. Expansion of the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant requires interconnection of three operating pump stations using only two existing 10-ft diameter shafts for access. These two existing shafts require additional support to allow access 130 feet below grade. Interconnection requires rehabilitation of an existing tunnel, excavation of two new tunnels, and abandonment of additional existing tunnels. Construction has discovered unexpected conditions at all three connection points. The CMAR contracting method has effectively accommodated project team discussion, value engineering decisions, and allocation of risk during preconstruction and construction phase services.

"Ancient and modern coastal deposits of heavy mineral sands (HMS) are the principal source of several heavy industrial minerals, with mining and processing operations on every continent except Antarctica. For example, HMS deposits are the main source of titanium feedstock for the titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigments industry, obtained from the minerals ilmenite (Fe2+TiO3), rutile (TiO2) and leucoxene (an alteration product of ilmenite). HMS deposits are also the principal source of zircon (ZrSiO4), from which zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is obtained for uses mostly in refractory products. Sometimes monazite [(Ce,La,Nd,Th) PO4] is recovered as a byproduct mineral, sought for its rare earth elements, and thorium (Ault and others, 2016; Sengupta and Van Gosen, 2016; Van Gosen and Tulsidas, 2016).HMS are sediments containing dense (heavy) minerals that accumulate with sand, silt and clay in coastal environments, locally forming economic concentrations of the heavy minerals (Fig. 1). Economic (mined) HMS deposits include Holocene sediments on modern coasts, such as examples in India and Brazil, as well as coastal deposits formed by transgressions and regressions of the seas during intervals in the Quaternary, Tertiary and Cretaceous, such as in Australia and the southeastern United States. Economic deposits typically contain heavy-mineral concentrations of at least two percent. Individual heavy minerals are commonly defined as minerals with a specific gravity greater than approximately 2.9 g/cm3. These minerals are generally resistant to chemical weathering and physical degradation and thus survive well in fluvial and coastal environments. Heavy minerals in coastal HMS deposits may include, in order of general abundance, ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, magnetite, zircon, staurolite, kyanite, sillimanite, tourmaline, garnet, epidote, hornblende, spinel, iron oxides, sulfides, anatase, monazite, cassiterite and xenotime. Of these, ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile and zircon are the primary economic minerals. Garnet, monazite, cassiterite and xenotime are occasionally recovered as byproducts. The heavy minerals as a suite typically make up no more than 15 weight percent of a deposit and usually much less. Quartz and clay minerals form the bulk of the sediment. The geology of HMS deposits and examples of significant districts are summarized in Van Gosen and others (2014) and Hou and Keeling (2016)."

On July 30, 1979 New Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations for implementing the procedural provisions of the decade-old National Environmental Policy Act went into effect. These new regulations replace approximately seventy different sets of agency regulations, providing some uniformity throughout the Federal government in the conduct of environmental reviews and preparation of environmental impact statements (EIS). This attempt by the Federal government at a general improvement in the preparation and quality of EIS&apos;s presents an opportunity for the mining industry to evaluate how the EIS process for mining proposals can be expedited. The environmental impact statement is often a key element on the critical path of a major mining project. Preparation of the EIS is ordinarily the responsibility of the Federal agency with primary decision-making authority over the project. Still, the proponent, i.e. the mining company, can play a major role in the process and have a major impact on the timeliness and adequacy of the effort. Typically, the Proponent will conduct (or will hire consultants to conduct) environmental baseline studies of, for example, air quality, wildlife, geology, water quality, vegetation and archaeology. These studies are then compiled into an environmental report and submitted to the agency. The agency verifies the data and incorporates them into the environmental impact statement.

The Jualin Gold Prospect is centered on Johnson Creek, approximately 40 air miles north-west of Juneau, Alaska. The property is on the southern end of the Kakuhan Range with Berners Bay immediately to the south and Lynn Canal to the west. The property is accessible directly by helicopter from Juneau or by float plane to the head of a 5.5 mile gravel road that begins on the north side of Berners Bay and terminates at the old workings of the Jualin Mine near the center of the property.

This paper presents an overview of surface mining activity in the Canadian oil sands and how the mine operators interact with the province of Alberta&apos;s Mine Financial Security Program (MFSP), which took effect April 1, 2011. The MFSP approach to reclamation assurance results in the government of Alberta sharing a portion of reclamation liability through the majority of an oil sand mine&apos;s life. In order to determine the potential fiscal magnitude of this shared liability, an examination of the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate asset retirement obligation (ARO) liabilities and other corporate disclosures is presented. The province of Alberta&apos;s Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF), which formerly secured oil sands mine reclamation activities is discussed. Reclamation costs in the oil sands are poorly understood. The MFSP provides what it characterizes as a conservative estimate of C$75,000/ha, while corporate disclosures by Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. place expected costs at C$180,000/ha. There is significant risk associated with the apparent uncertainty surrounding reclamation costs.

Maintenance of mining equipment has become so complex and important from a cost and product ion standpoint that the organization must be set up in an engineering fashion to be successful. Production costs are greatly affected by proper maintenance. Tonnages can only be met when operating time is at its maximum and breakdown time is at its minimum. Last, but equally important, large capital expenditures must be protected and improved The effectiveness of the maintenance program will, in many respects, be a direct, result of the effort put torch in developing the overall program. Once the need of maintenance is realized, the next step is to determine what the organization should be and what it should accomplish. Follow through is then most vital. Preventing machine breakdowns and reducing maintenance costs are the primary goals of all maintenance organizations. Good preventive maintenance, a system for inspecting equipment and a complete record of inspections will help attain these goals.

As duct-fan systems push the envelope of power, length and cost, their design calls for a more comprehensive technoeconomic analysis to ensure they deliver the expected results without failure and cost overrun. This work explores the numerous factors to include in the design of an extensive (semi-)rigid duct-fan system. Besides delivering a given airflow, the system must satisfy component limitations and power constraints during its lifetime. We evaluate the assumptions underlying the positioning of in-line booster fans in a long gapless duct-fan system and propose a strategy for specifying the location and blade pitch of successive booster fans to prevent system failure due to a partial vacuum.
