Steel slag is an industrial byproduct of steelmaking that is mainly composed of calcium, iron, silicon and magnesium. In addition, depending on the different raw materials entering the furnace, steel slag contains a certain amount of vanadium that is the main source of vanadium production, accounting for 69 percent of the species of the total vanadium raw material [1]. From experience, the production of one ton of steel will generate 1.0 to 1.5 tons of steel slag [2]. However, the utilization efficiency of steel slag is less than 30 percent, and a large amount of steel slag is identified as waste and stacked in tailings. The random stacking of steel slag not only wastes large amounts of limited steel and land resources but also exerts pressure on the environment [3], making it imperative to research the effective utilization of steel slag and recycling of metal resources.

Texas Utilities Generating Company (TUGCo) surface mines lignite for use as a boiler fuel at mine mouth generation stations. Currently, the annual lignite production requirement of approximately 28 million tons necessitates mining across approximately 1,600 surface acres each year. The mining operations, located in Freestone, Panola, Titus, and Hopkins counties, Texas, have drastically disturbed some 13,000 surface acres to depths of up to 110 feet since initial startup in 1971. The TUGCo mining philosophy, a commitment made prior to initiation of mining operations and prior to any mining regulations, includes a return of mined-out land to private ownership in the most useful state possible. In the areas of TUGCo operations, the local economies are based upon agricultural production. Historic land use surveys have typically shown a trend from row crop production to pastureland for cattle production. During the 1960?s, the percentage of acreage devoted to row crop production approached zero with respect to the total acreage devoted to agriculture. TUGCo reclamation operations have therefore emphasized restoration of land to a state that is favorable to cattle production

The adaptation of pelletizing processes involves the coordination of various factors such as temperatures, gas flows, productions, etc., in order to obtain optimum performance. The consequent problems are considerable due to the large number involved as well as the lack of knowledge of their correlation. It is therefore essential to establish a fundamental theory which takes into account the heat transfer phenomena and the secondary factors which are relevant to the properties of the product. Straight grate and grate kiln pelletizing processes involve heating of a stationary bed on a travelling grate. The heat transfer conditions are therefore of primary importance. This is why this article pays particular attention to conditions which obtain when a stationary bed is heated, in which certain special reactions occur. The conclusions drawn from this penetration of the heat transfer phenomena can be expressed in postulates acting as guide-lines for the establishment of proto-typal processes. Examples of elaborating such processes are also given in the article. Some operational experience at LKAB are also given.

Vegetative stabilization can help meet the esthetic objections and pollution problems posed by mine wastes. However, mine wastes are often unfavorable growth media and special treatments and techniques are needed for plant establishment and continued growth. The establishment of vegetation on mine wastes was the subject of many papers presented at the International Symposium on Ecology and Revegetation of Drastically Disturbed Areas held at Pennsylvania State University on August 3-16, 1969. This paper is a summary of those papers presented at the symposium that dealt with the nutritional and physical aspects of plant establishment on a variety of mine wastes. The synopsis presented is a combination of excerpts from the abstracts, notes on the oral presentations, and rough drafts of some of the papers. The papers will eventually be published in the symposium proceedings.

The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed, wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in one-phase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity, non-Darcy, single- and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulae on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

Researchers at the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, developed and tested equipment to measure corrosion rates on a commercial-scale mill. Bench-scale experiments were also designed for duplicating ore grinding conditions closely enough that realistic rate determinations can be made in laboratory tests. Rates measured in a laboratory system compared favorably with those measured in the field. Cast steel was found to have corrosion rates in a copper mill and laboratory test cell of 22 and 21 mpy, respectively. Corrosion was found to account for less than 5 pct of the total grinding media wear in the operations studied.

The Montreal metro Blue Line Extension toward the northeast consists of the construction of five new underground stations. The project includes 6 kilometers of the tunnel which will be constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). In line with the commitment to integrating sustainability best practices, Envision verification is pursued this project. The Envision reference framework was developed to cover all the sustainable development aspects of an infrastructure project and each phase of its life cycle (planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance, and end-of-life). As a part of this endeavor, low-carbon concrete and shotcrete mixtures are proposed for the linings of TBM and SEM tunnels as well as stations and auxiliary structures. The CO2 emission of the low-carbon concrete and shotcrete mixtures were compared with their typical mixtures and the total CO2 emissions reduction related to the tunnel lining is determined. The study is of strategic significance for achieving emission reduction in the tunnel industry.

The degree of injury and days lost from work due to an injury are examined for selected electrical sources, occurring in conjunction with falls of the injured miner or with selected machinery, that could have been eliminated by use of diesel equipment. Although the number of electrical source injuries that could have been prevented is small relative to the total number of injuries during the period examined, many lost-time injuries could have been precluded and thousands of days lost from work could have been avoided.

Modern mechanical raise drilling was first introduced into the United states in 1962. This method of safely, economically raising a shaft has steadily increased in popularity since that time. This steady growth has been largely enhanced by the many advantages to be gained by mechanical raise drilling, as well as by the increasing reliability of the equipment required. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly review the state of the art of raise drilling to include: the various applications and advantages; the equipment requirements, including a comparison of the various types and sizes of machines and rock cutting equipment; equipment performance; and future trends.

Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the important parameters influencing gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide-dosing strategy was changed to reduce gold losses from preg-robbing and to cut reagent consumption. A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in the carbon-in-leach circuit was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over the plant throughput. These changes resulted in a recovery increase of at least 2%, worth $111,000/month at $300/oz ($9.64/g) gold, and concomitant reagent cost savings of $55,000/ month.

The demand for thermal coal both nationally and internationally is projected to increase rapidly. The marketability of high ETU thermal coal produced in the USA is, however, limited by its high sulfur content. Fortunately, over 70 percent of the sulfur exists in pyritic form. The research conducted at Southern Illinois University indicates that over 90 percent of the pyrite can be removed by simple devices such as concentrating tables, cyclones, or froth flotation cells and the desulfurized coal can be blended with low sulfur western coal to produce EPA compliance coal. Thus, both the low BTU western coal and the high sulfur midwestern coal can be rendered competitive in the utility markets, here and abroad due to improved utilization.

Commercial development of the mineral resources of southwestern Missouri began about 1850 and spread into southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, forming the Tri-State Mining District with Joplin as the urban center (fig. 1). The value of the Tri-State mineral production from 1850 to 1950 exceeded one billion dollars, and until 1945 the region was the world's leading producer of lead and zinc concentrates, accounting for one-half of the zinc and one-tenth of the lead produced in the United States (Gibson, 1972 1). By 1950 most of the rich ores had been extracted, and mining and milling operations declined during the 1950's and ceased in the 1960's. The sulfide minerals, mainly galena and sphalorite, were mined from cherty limestones at depths of 25 to 75 m (meters). Crude ores were brought from the mines to the surface where they were milled into lead and zinc concentrates. , Barren rock was discarded in piles while the ore-bearing rock was crushed and ground into fine gravel. The minerals were separated from the rock by a jigging process and the tailings were skimmed off and discarded in large piles. Ground-water flooding of the mines was controlled by constant pumping. When pumpage declined in the 1950's and 1960's tile abandoned mine drifts and shafts filled with water. At present (1977) numerous tailings piles and flooded mines remain as visible evidence of the mining era and as a threat to the quality of ground and surface waters of the area. In 1976 the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Ozark Gateway Council of Governments made a study of the effects of the mines and tailings piles on water quality in the Missouri part of the Tri-State District. The study area covers approximately the southwestern quarter of Jasper County, an area of about 725 km2 (square kilometers), and is bounded by long 94 o 15' w.' and the Missouri-Kansas state line, and lat 37 o 15 N., and the Jasper-Newton County line.

In recent years increasing attention has been given to improving both the chemical and physical properties of sinter. The first step toward this goal was the production of a self-fluxing-sinter. More recently, blast-furnace operators have found that significant improvements in blast-furnace performance can be achieved by improving and controlling the physical size of the sinter. The results of full-scale blast-furnace tests have shown that blast-furnace production can be improved by using a closely sized agglomerate. The improvements obtained by the use of pellets, a closely sized agglomerate, are well known. In contrast, blast furnaces charged with sinter having a wide size spectrum have generally not yielded results as satisfactory as those from furnaces 1) * charged with pellets. Beginning in 1958, Appleby-Frodingham charged plus 3/8-inch sinter to their blast furnaces. Further tests by other companies in Canada, 2) the United States, 3) and Australia showed that blast-furnace production could be improved by about one percent when the plus 3/8-inch material in the burden was increased by one percent. Because of the promising results obtained with screened sinter, an extensive test program was initiated to determine an effective means of producing sized sinter in U. S. Steel's sinter plants. This paper describes the work done by the Applied Research Laboratory in this program.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. "In response to the severe drought on the Colorado River basin and in order to preserve existing water capacity to the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted a new deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) located in Lake Mead. The current project (Contract No. 070F-01-C1) includes 5 km (3 miles) of tunnel with very difficult geological conditions and a 200- m (650-ft) deep shaft and marine works. This paper will present the current status of the design-build contract being constructed by Vegas Tunnel Constructors and the challenges and problems faced and the innovative solutions developed to handle the difficult conditions encountered during tunneling with up to 15 bars of pressure.ProjectbackgroundThe Las Vegas Valley receives the majority of its water from Lake Mead, which is located approximately 30 km (20 miles) east of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area. Due to the severe drought that has hit the southwest region of the United States, the water level in Lake Mead has receded from its high water level of 372 m (1,221 ft) above mean sea level (amsl) to a low of 330 m (1,076 ft) amsl in June 2015. Should the lake level continue to fall, at elevation 320 m (1,050 ft) amsl, the current water intakes will not be able to draw enough water to meet the needs of the local area. The risk of losing water capacity has prompted the construction of a new deeper intake. Not only is the new Intake No. 3 situated at a lower elevation in the lake at 262 m (860 ft) amsl, the new Intake No. 3 is also located to draw better quality (Fig. 1).Project challengesThe project has had several difficult challenges to overcome:• The work consisted of a 1.2 kt (1,300 st) structure constructed on a barge and lowered 100 m (330 ft) into Lake Mead anchored with 9,200 m3 (12,200 cu yd) of tremie concrete.• The drill-and-blast starter tunnel was impacted by three inflow events, resulting in a one-year project delay.• One of the main challenges was selecting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavating the tunnel with expected hydraulic head pressure of as much as 17 bar (16 bar was the highest pressure recorded during the drive), crossing faulted areas, low rock cover and the risk of tunnel instability due to direct connection with the lake.• Extensive pre-excavation grouting with a constant head pressure ranging from 12 bar to 15 bar.• Structural repair of the cutterhead in difficult hydrogeological conditions [water inflow of approx. 800 m3/hr (4,000 gpm)].• Complete repair of the cascade sealing system for the main bearing and two replacements of the pinion bearings.• The TBM approach to the intake structure."

"Water drawn from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta provides water supply to 66 percent of California’s population and supports the state’s agriculture industry. The existing through-Delta water system is outdated and unreliable with environmental risk to some fish and wildlife species. The Bay-Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) has been established to environmentally retrofit and modernize California’s water delivery system through the Delta by restoring habitats, constructing new diversion points in the north Delta and providing a means to transport water supplies under the Delta, rather than through sensitive natural channels.Under BDCP, the Delta Habitat Conservation and Conveyance Program (DHCCP) has developed several alternatives to convey water from the Sacramento River in the north to the existing pumping facilities in the south Delta through an isolated conveyance system. The new conveyance system would become an integral part of the State Water Project (SWP) and the federal Central Valley Project (CVP) by transporting water to the export pumping plants for each of these projects. The DHCCP is managed by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), while state and federal water contractors provide technical support to the program.The initial conceptual study efforts on the overall program commenced in 2007 and examined various options for the proposed conveyance system. Several conveyance alternatives were analyzed at that time. The Conceptual Engineering Report published on Oct. 1, 2013 identified the modified pipeline/tunnel option (MPTO) as the preferred alternative to be included in the BDCP environmental documents. MPTO includes three river intakes and pump stations along the Sacramento River, various sizes of pipelines and tunnels, junction structures and two forebays that are capable of delivering up to 4 million gpm (9,000 cfs) from the Sacramento River to the SWP and CVP. The river intakes are located near Hood in Sacramento County approximately 64 km (40 miles) from Clifton Court Forebay (CCF) in Contra Costa County. This route would cross portions of Sacramento, San Joaquin and Contra Costa counties. Figure 1 depicts the configuration of the MPTO alternative."

A high-pressure laboratory elution rig was commissioned to simulate industrial Zadra and AARL elution conditions for the stripping of gold, silver and mercury from loaded activated carbon. It was found that cyanide was essential for the efficient elution of both mercury and silver, while gold was found to elute most effectively in hot, low-ionic strength solutions. Therefore, the standard AARL-type elution, which implements a cyanide soak and water elution, results in a lower recovery of mercury and silver from the carbon. No single set of conditions was found whereby gold, silver and mercury can all be effectively eluted in a single step. However, sequential elution conditions can efficiently recover all metals and provide a potential approach for separating these metals.
