Pilot scale flotation tests were conducted with a 1-ft-diam column at the Barrick Resources (USA) Mercur mine, Tooele County, UT, to scavenge unleached (0.01 to 0.018 oz/st) gold values from the tailings of a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. The optimal recovery was 35 pct of the unamenable-to-leaching gold, at a grade of 0.353 ounces of gold per short ton, using a mixture of dithiophosphate, xanthate, and diesel fuel as a collector. This was achieved by floating approximately 1.6 wt pct of the CIL tailings. The gold values are believed to be contained in arsenic-bearing minerals, attrited carbon, and carbonaceous material in the ore. Redox potentials were measured with a gold electrode during the conditioning stage prior to flotation. The correlation between flotation recovery and redox potential values could be used to control reagent additions. Treatment of a previously leached and weathered tailings material, averaging about 0.055 ounces of gold per short ton, was also investigated using the column. The tailings were first water leached at approximately 600 C, and the water-leached tailings, which contained approximately 0.03 ounces of gold per short ton, were then fed to the column flotation unit. The effects of pH and sodium sulfide addition on gold flotation recovery and redox potentials were examined. maximum gold recovery, 36 pct, was achieved at pH 8.5 with a sodium sulfide addition of 0.18 lb/st.

Sometimes a project is born easy, sometimes a project has a hard time being born. Probably every project can say we had tremendous problems to overcome and they would all be right. This project had all things happen to it. Born easy, a hard time after being born, there were tremendous problems to overcome but here it is, a major copper project, a major operation, and a new source of copper for Mexico and the world market. La caridad is an ore body located in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It is at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level and the nearest major city is Hermosillo, the capital city of Sonora. Hermosillo is located approximately 270 kms (about 168 miles) to the southwest of la caridad. North of la caridad, 130 kms (about 81 miles), is the U.S. border town of Douglas, Arizona, which has a sister city on the Mexican side of the border -Agua Prieta.

Designs, installation procedures, and performance characteristics of martensitic cast steel concaves are reviewed. Longer wear life, fewer pieces to install, and eliminating the need to scarf joints are the principal benefits of using martensitic steel to replace austenitic 12% Mn (Hadfield's) steel, the traditional concave material for large gyratory crushers. Installation procedures that reduce the risk of breakage are described. Operating practices that affect concave performance are also discussed.

Pinson Mining Company was formed to develop a gold orebody located in northern Nevada near Winnemucca. A feasibility study was undertaken in 1979 by a consortium of three Toronto-based mining companies and a Reno-based exploration company. The study indicated a viable project with gold priced above $225 per ounce. A project manager, and mine and mill superintendents, were hired in late 1979 to expedite the development of a 1000 ton per day mine-mill complex. Plant design engineering was contracted with Industrial Design Corporation in Salt Lake City. Three experienced plant metallurgists representing Pinson were stationed in Salt Lake to guide the work of Industrial Design. Among the many design criteria spelled out by Pinson, foremost were bringing the mill on line as quickly as possible at minimum capital cost. Fourteen months after the beginning of design engineering, the completed Pinson mill became operational. Total capital cost, including mine development, was $18 million. The Pinson project has proved to be far more than viable; the entire capital cost will be recovered within 18 months of the mill start-up.

Of the 15 million tons of glass discarded in municipal wastes annually, about 2 million tons pass through incinerators and can be recovered by ore processing techniques. Although the primary use for this recovered waste glass would be as cullet in the manufacture of new glass containers, this approach is not always practical because of long shipping distances, high freight costs, and high purity requirements. Alternatives to the use of waste glass as cullet would be either as landfill or in secondary products. Although glass is considered a good landfill material, it is still wasteful of potentially valuable raw materials. Secondary products that can be made from waste glass1 include a variety of industrial and construction items. As part of the Bureau of Mines' program in secondary materials recovery, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory has conducted research concerned with the development of ceramic building products from waste glass. Materials employed in this research were obtained from municipal incinerator residues fractionated in the Bureau's continuous residue processing plant, College Park Metallurgy Research center.' The studies reported herein3,4 present research results using waste glass in the formulation and production of clay bricks, not only to produce improved products, but to reduce production costs, conserve natural raw materials, and most important, to reduce manufacturing energy requirements.

This paper presents the results of laboratory and pilot plant investigations for the development of efficient methods of beneficiating hematite ores from the Krivoi Rog, Kursk Magnetic Anomoly, Olenogorsk, and other localities. The tests included gravity, magnetic (in a high intensity field), flota¬tion, and magnetizing roasting methods. It was possible to develop efficient beneficiation methods depending on the mineral composition of the ore and degree of dissemination of ore and gangue minerals. The paper shows the relationship between the iron silicate and quartz content of the ore and the technologic indices of the various beneficiation methods. Some of the conclusions based on these investigations and the technical and economic computations related to the cost of one ton of pig iron produced from concentrates obtained by the various beneficiation methods are: 1. If the hematite ore is not disseminated uniformly, it is expedient to use a combined gravity and flotation process. Ore particles up to 50 am. in size are beneficiated by gravity (heavy suspension, jigging, and others) and yield a lump concentrate. The middlings from this process are recrushed and floated; 2. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing small quantities (less than 5 percent) of iron silicates, are most effectively beneficiated by flotation. Anionic (sulphate soap, tall oil emulsion with various foam depressors) as well as cationic collectors may be used. Depending on the mineral and chemical composition of the ore, it is possible to obtain concentrates containing up to 65 percent iron with an extraction up to 94 percent; 3. Finely disseminated, mixed hematite-magnetite ores may be beneficiated by flotation or a magnetic separation-flotation process; 4. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing large quantities of iron silicates and earthy hematite ores are most efficiently beneficiated by the magnetizing roasting method. This method will yield concentrates containing up to 68 percent iron with extractions up to 90 percent. Although beneficiation by the magnetizing roasting process is costly, it will nonetheless, when employed on this type of ore, yield the least expensive pig iron.

Twenty-six insitu analyses of cubic galena crystals from a Mississippi Valley-type deposit were undertaken with a laser microprobe spectrograph to study the variation of nine trace elements from the crystal center to its periphery, both along the diagonal and vertical. The general trend is an increase in the concentrations of Ag, Ga, Ge, and In with As showing the opposite trend Bi, Cd and Sn did not show any pattern. Sb was not detected. These variation patterns nay serve as a model for similar studies of other Mississippi Valley-type deposits.

Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. "INTRODUCTION Abstract Tankhouse iron control through application of new treatment technology to mitigate conventional bleeding losses is considered. Implementation is discussed and the treatment economics explored. A representative case is assessed. Treatment benefits and application drivers for specific scenarios are noted. Background Hydrometallurgical ore processing has become a significant metal extraction/production avenue in recent decades. In copper mining; the focus for this examination, around 25% of global primary copper production and nearly 50% of US production result from various hydrothermal leaching extraction approaches coupled to Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) metal production. Generally such processing is favored over pyrometallurgical processes for lower ore grades and as such is finding growing use and is expected to remain a key processing route looking forward with average world-wide ore grades falling as known ore reserves become exhausted. Target Problem And Motivation In hydrometallurgical processing the production circuit may be thought of as a chain of interlocked recirculation loops (Figure 1). Leaching dissolves the target metal from the ore along with other ore components which contaminate the Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS). Iron is a common component in copper ores and, as a result, occurs fairly ubiquitously in copper Pregnant Leach Solutions (PLS) generated by leaching. Leached components migrate through the production circuit from left to right (Figure 1) through a net combination of chemical and mechanical transport mechanisms. Selectivity at the recirculation loop interfaces tends to retard rejected component migration through the production process. As a result, overall relative contaminant migration fluxes are slower than the target metal (copper) and the contaminants tend to build up relative to copper in the more upstream portions of the processing circuit over time with iron often being a significant contaminant. Further, while copper is continuously removed from the system in appreciable amounts, little contaminant exit occurs and the absolute contaminant amounts and concentrations also increase throughout the EW circuit over time."

The purpose of wrapping ball mills with thermal/acoustic blankets is twofold: 1) to maintain the desired temperature inside the mill, and 2) to reduce the sound emanating from the mill. This field case study focuses solely on the latter, evaluating and documenting the sound level reduction attributed to the installation of the blankets on ball mills and its potential to reduce the noise dose experienced by the process attendant. One of the three ball mills had already been treated (baseline) before the evaluation started. However, treating the remaining two mills still proved to be very effective, further reducing ball mill noise in the near field by as much as 10.0 dBA and producing far field noise reductions of 3.0 dBA or greater, extending as far as 35 feet from the mills and to the floor above. The model developed from the survey data shows that a process attendant spending a substantial portion of a shift in the mill building will experience a significant reduction in overall noise dose.

It is generally known and accepted that the efficiency of the blast furnace process, expressed by the symbols specific production and coke consumption, is influenced by a large number of variables connected to the type of burden, the alloy contents of the produced iron and the conditions of production as composition and preheating of the blast, the furnace heat losses and the possible use of fuels added on the tuyere level. It is furthermore obvious, that the coke consumption of the process will be influenced by specific production which could be said to be the result of two counter-acting influences. With high production, realized through intensive blowing, the passage time of the ore through the furnace is shortened leading to a decrease of the indirect reduction taking place in the upper part of the shaft within the temperature range of 300 to 1000°C. Simultaneously the external heat losses (constant in time) will be smaller calculated on each ton of iron and the resulting change in coke consumption will be the effect of both those influences. It is certainly of interest to be able to predetermine the effect of those variables before a change in the production practice is carried out.

INTRODUCTION The authors, by means of this paper, will attempt to show the role of Induced Polarization and Resistivity surveys in the discovery of the orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.). In this paper, we will also attempt to show the importance of conducting large enough surveys in order to properly evaluate the results obtained from these surveys. LOCATION The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Limited (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia (52°30' north, 122°16' west) (See Fig. 1). The property lies approximately 28 miles north of Williams Lake, B.C. and can be reached by way of 10 miles of newly improved road from McLeese Lake, on the Cariboo Highway. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3,500 and 4,100 feet. {EARLY HISTORY AND GEOLOGY The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims (See Fig. 2). The Pollyanna property was first described in the 1917 B.C. Minister of Mines Report which referred to it as the "Rainbow Group". The development at that time consisted of several open-cuts on copper bearing quartz veins.

Shotcrete has been used for approximately 20 years to facilitate tunnel excavation through poor ground. Early examples of such usage in North America include the recuperation of the Granduc Mines access tunnel in Northern British Columbia, and similar work performed in the Carley V. Porter and Big Walker Tunnels in the United States. Mining companies such as Craigmont Mines in B.C. and Hecla Mines have used shotcrete in their workings for the past ten years. Shotcrete is now a widely utilized fool in the mining and tunnel construction industries in North America, but the accumulated experience is too limited for many to fully appreciate the capability of shotcrete to control ground movements and to understand the limitations of this tool. It is common, for instance, to use shotcrete to "bridge the gap" between rock bolt-supported and steel-rib supported ground and to avoid the use of shotcrete in water-bearing ground. Shotcrete can, and has been, used economically and practically under most severe ground conditions.

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. As such it is not precise, and the shotcrete produced is of variable quality. MATERIALS HANDLING Materials handling presents a problem to either type of shotcrete machine. Jaspilite, a mineral consisting of silica and iron oxide in varying proportions, is one of the host rocks of the high grade ore deposits situated in the Middleback Range of South Australia. As a result of laboratory investigations, a flowsheet was postulated for the beneficiation of jaspilite to produce an acceptable grade product for feeding to blast furnaces, The flowsheet involved the reduction of the hematite in the haspilite to magnetite, the grinding of the reduced product to 95 pct minus 325 mesh Tyler followed by wet magnetic separation, hydroseparation and filtration to yield a magnetite concentrate. Agglomeration of the fine concentrate would then be necessary to meet the physical requirements of blast furnace feed. To prove the postulated flowsheet, to obtain a more accurate estimate of costs and to obtain design data for a commercial installation, a pilot plant was constructed at Whyalla, South Australia.

A concerted effort to determine the quantities and effects of trace elements in the environment requires the application of a number of different analytical techniques in the same or in different laboratories. The interpretation of analytical data is often difficult because of differing results between analysts or even by the same analyst at different times. Standard Reference Materials (SRM), which are certified for their trace element content and are in a matrix similar to the one of interest, can greatly increase the accuracy of analysis and the reproducibility between laboratories. The United States National Bureau of Standards (NBS) has developed a number of SRMs applicable to the determination of trace elements in environmental materials. Two of these, SRM-1571, Orchard Leaves, and SRM-1577. Bovine Liver, are excellent for biological tissue analyses. Several new standards are of value for fossil-fuel analyses. These are: SRM-1632. Trace Elements in Coal; SM-1633, Trace Elements in Fly Ash; SM-1634, Trace Elements in Residual Fuel Oil: and SRM-1635, Trace Elements in Gasoline. In cooperation with the US Environmental Protection Agency, the NBS has recently concluded an interlaboratory comparison involving analyses by more than 60 laboratories on these fossil-fuel materials. The resulu of this intercomparison and the broad range experience with the biological materials will be presented showing both intratechnique and intertechnique variations, and the sensitivities and comparisons with the values certified by NBS.

The U.S. coal industry is under-going dramatic changes to meet the challenges of the keenly competitive fuels market. The application of innovative technologies is needed to improve safety and to increase productivity in order to make coal more competitive as a fuel. As more coal companies shift into capital intensive longwall mining, there is a clear need to invest more in exploration before mine plans are made. Coal seam anomalies may create adverse mining conditions. The early detection of these anomalies could make the longwall mining safer and more productive through improved planning. A standard exploratory drilling program can provide only limited geologic information. The seismic reflection technique can be used to detect coal seam anomalies and is effective in reconnaissance surveying. Recent advances in the quality of coal seismic data have increased the success rate of seismic surveying. Therefore, surface seismic surveys, coupled with selective drilling, will come to play an integral role in coal exploration in the 1990s.

The P.W. Gillibrand Company has been processing and stockpiling a suite of heavy minerals at its Soledad Canyon Mine as co-products with construction aggregates since 1984. The heavy minerals are composed of ilmenite, magnetitie, apatite and zircon. The source of the heavy minerals is the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. The valuable minerals are readily amenable to standard ore dressing techniques, such as, gravity, magnetic, flotation and electrostatic separation with good recovery and product quality. More than 20,000 short tons of coarse ilmenite were sold in 1990 to the export market for titanium pigment production.

Iron transfer from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to the electrolyte can have a major economic impact on solvent extraction (SX) operations. High iron transfer will lead to greater operational costs, due to increased reagent consumption through electrolyte bleed and make up, or increased power costs due to decreased electrowinning current efficiency. Bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfide ore from the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine was investigated in a large scale piloting program including SX and electrowinning. Plant data and lab test work conducted throughout the course of operation, show that the unique containing PLS high ferric iron with high pH can lead to lower Cu: Fe selectivity than is typically seen in traditional copper SX operations. The impact of high ferric iron on the plant operation, and methods to reduce iron transfer will be discussed. Special considerations need to be taken for plant operating conditions and selection of SX reagents (including both extractant and aromatic content of diluent) based on the feed PLS characteristics.

I welcome this opportunity to appear before you and to review briefly the various health and safety services of the Bureau of Mines available to the mining industry, other than coal, and also to tell of our plans for extending these services to improve safety and health conditions. The Bureau's health and safety activities are basically services by which we attempt to develop and disseminate information on improved techniques in mine accident prevention and promote mine safety education in the mineral industries. Unfortunately, some mining companies, particularly some of the smaller operations, seem to be unfamiliar with these services, The Bureau of Mines is charged by law with the responsibility for inspecting coal mines; other services to the coal mining industry and are provided only on request, Safety inspections and other services that we offer are provided for noncoal mining industries solely upon request.
