Some of the practices of the mining industry that may place an undesirable stress on the groundwater environment are coming under increasing scrutiny from legislators and regulatory agencies. Among these practices are mine dewatering, the use of tailings ponds, land rehabilitation, and technological innovations such as in situ leaching of waste clumps and ore deposits. Pernichele, noting that 24 states have enacted legislation controlling to varying degrees the environmental effects of mining, has emphasized the importance of assessing the potential for damage to groundwater when evaluating, planning, and designing mining projects. 1 Illinois has enacted legislation requiring anyone opening, operating or abandoning a mine site to obtain a permit from the Illinois EPA. The law is one of the first to require regular monitoring and reporting to a control agency. Legislation has also been recently enacted at the national level that will have a significant impact on the mining industry; e. g., the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). The stated objective of this Act is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the nation's waters. Specifically, according to Sec. 102(a), the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to prepare or develop comprehensive programs for preventing, reducing or eliminating the pollution of the navigable waters and groundwaters and improving the sanitary condition of surface and underground waters. The definition of the terms "pollution" and "pollutant" is of particular significance to those who must comply with PL 92-500. The definitions are quite broad and include most of the adverse water quality effects of man's activities. As defined in Sec. 502(19), "pollution means the man-made or man-induced alteration of the chemical, physical, biological and radiological integrity of water." Within the Act, the list of pollutants includes dredged spoil, solid waste, incineration residue, chemical wastes, radioaetive materials, heat, wrecked or discarded equipment, rock, sand, cellar dirt, and industrial waste discharged into water.

This map shows general trends of the chloride concentration of water in the upper part of the Floridan aquifer. Below this part of the aquifer, high chloride water can be found everywhere in the State. The accompanying cross section shows the depth to salty water across central Florida. In the center of Florida, fresh water may be found as deep as 2.000 feet, whereas, along the coast it may extend no deeper than about 200 feet. Chloride concentration in small local areas may deviate from the values represented on both the cross section and the main map. "The silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide in leach solutions that contain primarily free cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method overestimates the concentration of free cyanide and underestimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric (MP) titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues associated with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper, and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, analytical results obtained with the new MP-WAD method were found to be within about ±5% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.IntroductionThe silver nitrate titration method is widely used to estimate the concentration of cyanide in leach solution for purposes of cyanidation process control. Cyanide determined by silver nitrate titration is commonly referred to as “free” cyanide, but frequently should be referred to as “titratable” cyanide. By definition, free cyanide is the sum of the concentrations of aqueous hydrogen cyanide HCN(aq) and the cyanide anion CN- (ASTM, 2010). Titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide when metal-cyanide complex concentrations (e.g., cadmium, copper, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc) in solution are low. In other words, titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide if the solution primarily contains free cyanide."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop safe practices for the use of shotcrete as ground support in underground mines, particularly mines operating in weak host rock. As part of this research, a rugged, portable direct tensile test system was developed for measuring shotcrete adhesion strength in underground mines. During the development of this test system, more than 185 direct tensile tests were conducted with a common, commercially available macro-synthetic fiber-reinforced shotcrete that was applied to concrete test panels using a dry mix process and machinery. The average bond strength of the shotcrete to the concrete substrate typically increased as a function of the shotcrete’s curing age, ranging from 0.44 MPa (64 psi) after one day of curing to 1.58 MPa (229 psi) after 90 days of curing. Adhesion strength increased markedly between one and three days of curing, reflecting a similar trend of increasing shotcrete tensile strength with curing time. This robust direct tensile test system can improve mine safety by providing a reliable means of measuring shotcrete adhesion strength and also supplying important information about the quality of the applied shotcrete and the competency of the underlying rock.

It is a transitional region in which it is difficult to ascertain the mechanisms of adsorption of ions, molecules, etc. on mineral surfaces, as well as other secondary reactions which occur in interfacial regions. Thus, in this paper the authors deal with conceptual considerations from which hypotheses are set forth to describe the environmental- interfacial relationships for sulfide minerals.

Flocculation, the process of coagulation or coalescence of finely divided particles, is commonly used in separating fine solids from fluids. Forces disposing of the particles to flocculate include: ionic forces of attraction, secondary entropic forces, and magnetism. Magnetic flocculation is due to a physical magnetizing process which affects suspended ferromagnetic particles. Such particles, after exposure to magnetic fields strong enough to cause reorientation of the particles and alignment of the induced magnetic poles, tend strongly to retain this induced magnetism, as the magnetic retentivity of ferromagnetic particles is a linear function of its specific surface.1 Thus, because they become small magnets with high residual magnetism, the particles become and remain attracted to one another, forming large agglomerates. Fine magnetic particles close to domain size can exhibit energies of the magnetization of the order of 105 ergs/cm3,2 which is many times greater than the energy affected by chemical flocculents. Therefore magnetic flocculation can be used to agglomerate particles having surfaces ionized with like charges and only a minute quantity of ferromagnetic material will be necessary to develop sufficient force to overcome the repulsive ionic forces and hold together relatively large masses of fine solid agglomerates suspended in fluids. Since flocculation occurs after the fine suspension passes through a magnetic field generated by magnets surrounding a pipe section, the simplicity of the process and economic advantage makes magnetic flocculation very attractive.

The acid leach-solvent extraction processing of oxide copper ores can be improved when selected cation additives are utilized. Bench scale testing showed improvements in both sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction processing. Treatment with the method to be described shows improvement in copper recovery in the acid leaching section as well as reduced acid consumption and reduced iron and aluminum dissolution. Processing the copper bearing leach solution with LIX-64N shows increased loading of the LIX reagent which relates to reduced aqueous and organic flow rates, reduced organic loss and inventory as well as a reduction in the size of mixer-settlers. The use of selected monovalent cations controls fluctuations within the pro- cessing system to accomplish the above named improvements. Additionally, these cations are totally compatible throughout the processing system and are quite inexpensive. Bench scale recycle data will be presented both for the leaching section and the continuous solvent extraction processing section up to (but not including) processing the loaded electrolyte. Material balances as well as major solution component monitoring will also be presented.

Water occupies a dual role in our industrial society. It is the indispensable raw material, essential to life itself. It is equally an industrial nuisance, interfering with the production of industrial minerals, making construction difficult, flooding valuable land, and generally producing problems because it is in the wrong place at the critical time. The legal position of water as a nuisance, and the counter measures to be taken, have been well established procedures for determining the responsibility for damage caused by water, and the organization of drainage districts and flood control and levee districts have been legally tested many times. Thus there is rather adequate legal doctrine concerning water, the common enemy. But recently efforts have been made to regularize the position of water as a useful, industrial, commodity. Such laws are not new to the West, where the doctrine of appropriation for beneficial use is slowly becoming the water law. Elsewhere the University of Michigan has produced a "model" water law and efforts are being made to induce all of the states to use this law, or a slight variation of it, as the basis for legislation. There are many serious criticisms of the proposed "model"-law, and the writer strongly opposes many of the provisions. But the fact remains that water is, in itself, so useful and essential that laws have been, and will be, passed to insure the orderly development of our water resources and to prevent waste. The, most important aspect of these "water-use" laws is that, wise or unwise, the existing laws and the proposed laws have been "water oriented". "Water oriented" means that it has been tacitly assumed that the beneficial use of water, either surface water or ground water, is the overriding consideration.

There used to be a time when bins were designed for total volume and placed in any available place of the plant. Poke holes were provided and feed was maintained by manual prodding, lancing, hammering, and by various mechanical flow-profiting devices. Little thought was given to what occurred inside the bins and why materials did not flow. Indeed, such mental effort was hard to justify while low-cost manual labor was plentiful, quality standards low, and rates of feed moderate. The past fifteen years have seen a drastic change in these conditions. We all know that labor for hard manual work is becoming unavailable at any wage, level. Standards of product uniformity are continuously rising. This uniformity is just as important in a fine ore feed to ball mills as it is in a cattle feed or in a flour mix. Rates of feed now frequently exceed 2,000 tons per hour per feeder. At that rate there is no time for, lancing or prodding. An efficient storage, plant contains a known available volume of bulk solid, and feeds it at the required time, at the prescribed rate, and without degradation of the product. A storage bin may also perform other functions such as blending of different grades, degasification of aerated, powders, isolation of different gaseous media. A contact bed of particles flowing by gravity in counter-current with a gas or liquid may be used as a continuous reactor. Gas or liquid pressures can be simply contained by, a sufficient head of flowing solid.

I can recall a time 10 or 12 years ago when I spent a pleasant Sunday afternoon driving to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania to see a carnotite deposit that had recently been discovered. The announcement of the discovery stated that it was in the Pottsville conglomerate in a road cut along the highway. To my surprise, the highway was lined with cars and every weekend prospector for 100 miles had come to see the ?big uranium deposit of the east?. I literally had to stand in line to make a measurement with the scintillation counter I had with me. The thought at first occurred to me that this is evidence of how thoroughly the surface of the United States must have been prospected, more likely, perhaps it points out quite the opposite. A lot of time and energy was being spent in tracing the footsteps of others and a lot of time was spent looking for the obvious occurrences. The point is, that in the early days a tremendous amount of uranium exploration was carried out but few systematic surveys were made. Thorium anomalies were usually discounted after cursory surface field checks. Conversely, in airborne surveys - anomalies due to elevation changes or thin over- burden on hilltops were often investigated more thoroughly than smaller indications on hillsides and valleys. An adequate supply of uranium was nevertheless found due to the ingenuity and persistence of the geological profession and the public in general. This ?adequate? supply, like so many estimates for raw materials turned out to be far too low.

An optical instrument designed for the on-line measurement of the size distribution of coarse particles (3-500 mm) being transported on a conveyor belt is described. Included is a discussion of the measurement technique, as well as test data verifying the legitimacy of the basic sensing approach. Field data indicating the instrument's ability to make useful measurements in an industrial environment are also presented. Applications in the mining and mineral industry, for which this instrument was orginally developed, are outlined, with particular emphasis given to the areas of crushing and grinding control.

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America reports that an underground mine is the most difficult environment to illuminate (Rea, 2000). Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) are conducting ongoing studies designed to explore different lighting technologies for improving mine safety. Underground miners use different visual cues to escape from a smoke-filled environment. Primary and secondary escapeways are marked with reflective ceiling tags of various colors. Miners also look for mine rail tracks. The main objective of this paper is to compare different lighting types and ceiling tag colors to differentiate what works best in a smoke-filled environment. Various cap lamps (LED and incandescent) and lasers (red, blue, green) were compared to see which options resulted in the longest detection distances for red, green and blue reflective markers and a section of mine rail track. All targets advanced toward the human subject inside of a smoke-filled room to simulate the subject walking in a mine environment. Detection distances were recorded and analyzed to find the best cap lamp, laser color and target color in a smoke environment. Results show that cap lamp, laser color and target color do make a difference in detection distances and are perceived differently based on subject age. Cap lamps were superior to lasers in all circumstances of ceiling tag detection, with the exception of the green laser. The incandescent cap lamp worked best in the simulated smoke compared to the LED cap lamps. The green laser was the best color for detecting the tags and track compared to the red and blue lasers. The green tags were the easiest color to detect on the ceiling. On average, the track was easier for the subjects to detect than the ceiling tags.

Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NDPS are discussed with emphasis on the "toxic" or priority pollutants and EPA's philosophy on the control of these pollutants, The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCA regulations that will affect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface. This paper reviews earlier in-plant testing at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant at Port Cartier, Quebec, Canada. It describes the result of the more prolonged use of coke breeze during recent months and in addition, the effects of varying dolomite and coke additives upon the metallurgical properties of the pellet production have been studied. Mention is also made of some brief test work carried out to use peat moss as a carbonaceous additive to the pelletizing process and in particular the plans for future work in this respect. Earlier laboratory pot-grate test work had indicated that a production rate increase of between fifteen and twenty percent was a practical possibility, or alternatively that the plant could be run at design rating with significantly lower energy consumption. These energy reductions were of the order of ten to fifteen percent for fuel and main process fan power respectively. The physical and metallurgical pellet properties for both blast furnace and direct reduction furnace use were little affected by the production rate increases, and were actually somewhat improved when practicing maximum energy conservations. Pellet properties could be further improved by not extracting the maximum energy economy. Two phases of carefully controlled in-plant testing were run to assess the effect of energy conservation under plant conditions. These two phases of testing confirmed that an overall fuel saving of approximately fifteen percent could be realized, with a reduction in the Bunker C oil consumption of about forty-five percent, and a reduction in main process fan power of approximately ten to fifteen percent. The present scope of work is aimed at establishing the use of varying levels of coke addition up to about one percent under normal plant operating conditions.

"The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

"There are signs that the commodity downturn that has battered the mining industry for the past five years is beginning to ease up. As the dust begins to settle and mining companies begin to take stock of the battle, Newmont Mining Corp. will be one that is standing strong with just a few scrapes and bruises thanks in large part to the leadership of president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg and his right hand man and chief operating officer, Chris Robison.As he closes in on retirement (for a second time) Robison, a third-generation miner from Nevada, took time to speak with Mining Engineering about a 33-year career in which, among other things, he is credited with not just helping Newmont survive the turbulent times but with steering the company to a safer, more productive and more profitable heading.“I think we did it better than anyone else,” Robison said when asked how the company fared during the past five years. “We didn’t talk about it a lot, we just put together a strategy and we delivered.”What Newmont, the world’s second-largest gold mining company by production, delivered since Robison took the position of chief operating officer in 2013 are improvements in costs, porduction, projects and safety.Operating under the mantra of “live within your means,” Robison was pulled out of retirement from Rio Tinto and into a challenging situation at Newmont. The price of gold was in a nose dive from a high of nearly $58/g ($1,800/oz) and heading to levels closer to $38.60/g ($1,200 oz).“Newmont is a big ship that can’t be turned, but has to be steered,” said Robison. “We recognized that we had to set a new course. The direction the ship was going was great for $1,600 to $1,800/oz gold but we were chasing ounces.”Like the rest of the gold mining sector before the falling gold prices, Newmont was focused on volume and was looking for gold wherever it could be found. The slogan at Newmont in 2011 was “7 million ounces a year by 2017.”When Robison came on board it was a different reality.“We had to begin focusing on value over volume as the cornerstone of Newmont going forward,” he said."
