Siderophyle platinum-group metals and sane gold are a thousand times more abundant in metal and chondritic meteorites than in terrestrial or lunar rocks. Type I and II carbonaceous chondrites contain granules of the high boiling point metals W, Re, Mo, Ir and Os. Metal meteorites and the metal fractions of other chondrites contain siderophyle Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir and Au. Spectra of sunlight reflected from asteroids, when compared with those of meteorites and specific minerals, provide a rough classification and guide to sources of precious platin-group metals.

The 1987 recovery in the US mining industry permitted modest increases in exploration expenditures that year (Fig. 1). Favorable market conditions apparently allowed the gains to be sus¬tained in 1988. There was great uncer¬tainty early in the year as to whether world and US economic growth would be a casualty of the October 1987 worldwide stock market crash. By nearly all measures, the performance of the US minerals industry was strong¬. A weak US dollar and the strong growth of worldwide capital spending resulted in in¬creased US exports of con¬sumer and producer durable items as well as strong domes¬tic demand for metals. In fact, 1988 US steel industry exports reached levels not attained since the mid-1970s. It was re¬ported that steel industry labor productivity is now roughly twice the 1981 level. Among metals with signifi¬cant average nominal price increases in 1988 over 1987 levels were copper (43%), alu¬minum (52%0), and zinc (44%). Even though domestic copper production has grown since 1984 by 30% in mining and 24% in refining, em¬ployment in mining and milling is 4% below the 1984 level. Domestic unit costs are reported in the range of $1.10 to $1.33/kg (50 to 60 cents per lb). The US base metals industry is proba¬bly in its best cash position in many years. However, there has not been a large increase in exploration expendi¬tures. This is due mostly to the percep¬tion that worldwide capacity can easily be increased. Industry reports do show that "low cost" copper producers have been buying reserves from weaker com¬panies. The 1987 Society of Economic Ge¬ologists (SEG) survey of exploration activity indicated that 95 cents out of every exploration dollar spent by US and Canadian firms was for base and precious metals (Economic Geology, January 1989). Press reports, though, make it clear that most of that spending was targeted for precious metals. US claim staking data (Fig. 2) rein¬forces this suspicion. The apparent lag in new claim filings in Alaska and phe¬nomenal growth in filings in the lower 48 states suggests that exploration is directed at relatively low risk targets. In the conterminous 48, more than 40% of the new claims were made in Nevada, indicating an emphasis on gold (although even Nevada had some base metals exploration). Even with a price decline during 1988, the difference between the gold price and average global "cash" production cost of $7.30/g ($227 per oz) still leaves room for an attractive return (Northern Miner, 1988). Exploration plans and results Metals Economics Group (Halifax) indicated in its 1988 exploration survey that exploration expenditures by US and South African firms would be at about 1987 levels. It also reported that Canadian and Australian firms were ex¬pected to reduce their exploration spend¬ing significantly. Firms in both coun¬tries were caught in changes in tax laws. In Canada, the Mining Ex¬ploration Depletion Allow¬ance (MEDA) once permitted generous tax write-offs to in¬dividuals investing in miner¬als exploration. It was to be replaced in January 1989 with the Canadian Exploration In¬centives Program (CEIP). Although structured and ad¬ministered differently than MEDA, CEIP can provide an equivalent or possibly greater financial incentive for min¬eral exploration, for junior mining companies. In 1987, it is estimated that junior com¬panies accounted for two¬-thirds of the off-property (or grass roots) exploration ex¬penditures in Canada. Australia will revoke the tax exemption for gold in 1990. Australian operators, therfore, were expected to concentrate efforts on speeding up pro¬duction during 1988 and 1989. In 1988, Chile and Mali announced special efforts to attract gold explora¬tion by foreign companies. The Cana¬dian government continues to express concern about the write-off (and drawdown) of base metal reserves. The amount of copper flash smelting slag has increased during the recent years along with an increasing slag-to-metal ratio. During slag tapping, some copper sulfide is mechanically entrained. As a result, it is necessary to recover copper matte from the slag by suitable methods. At present, the most common way is slow, controlled cooling in a transfer ladle. However, research on the detailed effects of slow cooling and the function of slag modification is rare. This paper described experiments that were performed at different cooling rates (0.5, 1.5, 3, and 7 °C/min), with and without additive. A detailed characterization of the copper-rich phase and its particle size was subsequentlymade using SEM-EDSmicrographs and image analysis software.With a decrease in cooling rate, the particle size of the copper-rich matte phase became larger. The addition of gypsum and carbon as a slag modifier affected the size of the copper-rich phase slightly, and its chemical composition was modified compared with the experiments without additive.

This paper is an account of exploration for bauxite in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, and particularly of the discovery, exploration and development by Alcan of the Trombetas deposit so a general account of the Trombetas Project has already been published in E/MJ (Anon. 1975) to which the reader is referred for details on owner-ship, infrastructure and construction as well as the proposal for mining and treating the bauxite. It is impossible to consider the Trombetas deposits in isolation. A regional account of bauxite in and around the Guyana Shield and the northern portion of the Brazilian Shield is included and it is suggested that these deposits all formed during Tertiary time under similar conditions.

Seismic events can be induced by mining due to unstable rock failures or slips along geologic structures leading to the sudden release of strain energy stored within the rock near underground openings. Depending on their intensity and proximity to the working area, seismic events may raise safety concerns, and thus the forecasting of the seismic potential in advance of mining can mitigate safety hazards. The integration of seismic data into geomechanical modeling can provide a tool for identifying areas with elevated potential for seismic activity. In previous works, a methodology was developed to forecast seismic potentials in a pseudo-2D geomechanical model. In this paper, seismic events, ranging in magnitude from about -1.0 ML to 3.7 ML, recorded in a deep longwall mine (> 450 m) in Virginia during mining of six adjacent panels, were evaluated to identify areas where larger magnitude events (> 1 ML) had occurred. A three-dimensional geomechanical model of the same area was constructed in the 3DEC software to calculate the state of energy in the system with the progress of mining along the entire length of each panel. The variation in the energy content of the model was monitored, and zones with potentially damaging slip-type events along bedding planes followed by compressive-type events in the sandstone roof are the mechanism for large seismic events in the studied mine. The locations of anomalous events corresponded to the regions where both compression-type SPI (C-SPI) and slip-type SPI (S-SPI) were elevated. The modeling results were compared with the recorded seismic events to evaluate the model performance in forecasting the seismic potentials. The model was able to forecast 100% of regions with elevated and moderate seismic potential and 89% of regions with low seismic potential. This shows the applicability of energy balance calculations for forecasting the approximate location and timing of destructive seismic events in advance of mining.

Steel consumption ranks as one of the major consumables along with energy in most operations with total annual industry expenditures in excess of $275 million. It is generally agreed that there are 3 main categories of wear responsible for this metal loss. These three main types can be loosely defined as follows; 1) Abrasion. The cutting, rubbing, scrapping and gouging of the metal surface by the ore with which it is in contact; 2) Impact. Spalling on both micro and macro scale, breakage, and deformation due to metal to metal contact; 3) Corrosion. Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960's, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. With more electronic systems being introduced underground, the mining industry faces electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues caused by electromagnetic energy emitted by one device adversely impacting the normal function of another. This paper provides an overview of EMC and electromagnetic interference (EMI) research for underground mining, including a review of EMI in other industries applicable to mining, published EMI research pertaining to mining applications, representative EMI incidences, related EMI legislation in mining, and mitigation strategies.

Pyrometasomatic zones are a type of replacement deposit, normally in a carbonate rock unit, which consists of a zoned, coarse-grained, generally iron-rich mixture of calcium and magnesium silicates. These zones or rock masses are also called ?skarn,? and ?tactite?. They are formed as a result of the interaction of a shallow intrusion of magma with a carbonate or calcareous host rock and are considered to be of hydrothermal origin. Three environments of pyrometasomatic deposits are depicted in Figure 1. Of course, the interaction takes place at high temperatures. Pyrometasomatic zones are categorized as calcic or magnesian, depending on whether the intrusive interacts with a limestone or a dolomite. Common pyrometasomatic zone minerals are garnet, epidote, quartz, calcite, wollastonite, actinolite, hedenbergite and diopside. Pyrometasomatic zones are of considerable economic importance because they contain ore deposits of tungsten, molybdenum, copper, lead, zinc and iron. According to Rose and Burt (1979), the chronological sequence in the formation of a ?typical? pyrometasomatic deposit is as follows: 1. Shallow intrusion of magma at 900-700°C into carbonate sediments.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, devised a direct flotation method for treating low-grade carnallice (KC1.MgC12. 6H20) and sylvinite (a mixture of KC1 and NaC1) ores characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The procedure consists of (1) flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes, (2) decomposition leach (carnallite only), (3) potash rougher, cleaner and recleaner flotation, and (4) final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity of removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation desliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumptions. The direct flotation method recovered 81.6% of the solid-phase KC1 from carnallite ore and 79.7% of the KC1 from sylvinite ore in final products containing 60.5% and 60.9% K20, respectively. A flowsheet incorporating the described flotation procedure is presented.

Long before the dawn of recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It has been well established that prehistoric man discovered flint. "The Flintstones" were aptly named. The flintknappers of southern England and Wales still exist today in ever dwindling numbers as they seek out chunks of flint. It is a well known fact that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica containing materials have a great many uses in modern society. However, this material is potentially extremely hazardous to our health. Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. It is obvious to us that he was describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings, that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century, B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. It was certainly described by Agricola in his "De Re Metallica" published in 1556, in which he described lung disease among hard rock miners. This publication, I'm sure, is of special interest and perhaps known to many of you in the mining community. The original document was written in Latin and was translated in 1912 by two gentlemen, Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former president of the United States, who made his living before his presidency as a mining engineer.

The effect of some of the reagents, namely hydrocarbon oil, Syntex (sulfated coconut oil surfactant), pine oil, sodium silicate, and lime, used at the Climax mill on the recovery and grade of molybdenite and gangue minerals has been investigated experimentally using factorially designed test approach in the laboratory. The results of the investigation are presented in two dimensional plots. The lower additions of lime (equivalent to a pH of 8 to 8.5) were desirable for maximizing recovery subject to constraints on grade. Higher additions of pine oil improved recovery, but only at the expense of grade. A mathematical model of the objectives of an operating plant was formulated and optimum reagent conditions obtained.

This work integrated selective principal component analysis (SPCA) with a singularity fractal model to map hydrothermal alterations of argillic, phyllic, and propylitic in the north-west of Kerman city in Iran. SPCA results were provided for short wave infrared (SWIR) bands of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) sensor tomap phyllic and propylitic alterations. Also, the bands 5–7 were applied to map the argillic alteration zone. SPCA results could present useful information for alteration mapping but it does not show the purest pixels of alteration. Therefore, a fractal model of singularity was applied to highlight the different alteration pixels in the Kerman Cenozoic magmatic arc (KCMA). Thus, the singularity index of different hydrothermal alteration zones was produced. Comparing the obtained results with the field data showed that Kader, Serenu,Meiduk, and Abdar deposits were acceptably identified by alteration mapping. Also, it seems that the singularity index could not discriminate the hydrothermal alterations of argillic and phyllic. The same spectral signature of kaolinite and muscovite minerals is the main reason for misclassifications.

Concern about environmental pollution goes back many centuries, but until recently most efforts to control it have been perfunctory and spasmodic, aimed largely at coal smoke and other visible pollutants. Air pollution is to a large degree a byproduct of our economic development, and scientific knowledge of the causes and character of such pollution is more extensive than the technology to handle the waste byproducts of our industrial civilization. The removal of all constituents foreign to the air from the effluents produced by an industrialized society is obviously impractical at this time. There is widespread difference of opinion regarding acceptable ambient air concentration levels for the Various pollutants produced by combustion processes, but there is basic agreement that the pollution of the atmosphere must be controlled and eventually reduced. The magnitude of the air pollution problem has been increasing rapidly because our expanding economy calls for an ever-increasing consumption of energy, and fossil fuels are a principal source of energy. For example, the consumption of electricity has been increasing at an average annual rate of approximately 8 percent over the last 10 or 1.5 years. Table 1 shows the estimated emission of the principal pollutants into the atmosphere in 1966. The approximately 90 million automobiles, trucks, and buses on American highways contribute the largest proportion of pollutants to the atmosphere, but that fact does not alter the growing problems of the coal industry. You will note that sulfur oxides, particulates, and nitrogen oxides are all products of the combustion of coal. Of these air contaminants, sulfur oxides are now receiving major emphasis in terms of research to develop effective means for control, Table 2 shows that the combustion of coal produces approximately 60 percent of the sulfur oxides discharged to the atmosphere. While the utilization of coal is the principal source of particulate matter, this is not considered as serious a problem as it was in the early part of the century because of technological developments that have produced sound methods for the removal of particulates from waste gas streams.

The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 0.34 lb NaCN/ton of solution. Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0-5 to 2.9 Pb CaS/lb Kg in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

It is vitally important to any tunnel project to have an accurate and reliable survey control network inside the tunnel for layouts, as-built surveys, and to provide guidance to the tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, the concepts and methodology to provide such a survey network are sometimes not well understood. For example, the first anticipated survey task that takes place during the bidding process is often ignored, which is to provide a comprehensive survey network preanalysis for the surface network and tunnel traverse based on survey statistics that will be used to make informed decisions on the survey requirements and methodology. Instead, these steps are often only vaguely based on previous results and prior tunneling experience. But each tunnel is different, and a solution that worked for one tunnel project might be unsuitable for another. The purpose of this paper is to provide tunnel project engineers, managers and surveyors with the general concepts for tunnel survey methodologies and examines several statistical tools for a basic horizontal and vertical tunnel survey preanalysis. These survey statistics tools provide useful estimates of the expected lateral and vertical tunnel traverse accuracies, but are not a replacement for a comprehensive tunnel network preanalysis. The proposed formulas do not take centering errors into account, are using average distances for each traverse leg, and assume that the survey data is free of outliers in the measurements. It is very important that the estimated instrument accuracy is based on true values that are reflective of measurement precisions that are actually achievable inside the tunnel to provide accurate results.

A series of nonionic and anionic surfactants were tested to enhance the flotation response of a low rank coal. An ethoxylated octyl phenol and several polypropylene polyethylene block copolymers were tested as nonionic surfactants. The anionic surfactant was a dioctyl sulfosuccinate. All the surfactants employed improved the yield significantly but the influence on grade was complex. Separate studies were conducted to determine the emulsification behavior of the surfactants. For the nonionic water soluble reagents tested, a correlation between emulsifying power of the surfactant and flotation was observed. An increase in the number of droplets produced in surfactant containing systems was considered to be the main reason for increase in the yield. Since it increased the number of collisions between dodecane droplets and coal particles. When a surfactant was introduced into the flotation pulp prior to addition of dodecane, it decreased the benefits of the surfactant significantly. The decrease was attributed to an increase in the wettability of coal and a decrease in the surfactant available for emulsification. When a suitable surfactant was added as a solution dissolved in the oily collector, a considerable increase in yield was observed.

The first significant studies of problems related to the handling and storage of bulk solids were reported at the end of the nineteenth century. Early work originated from the necessity to store large quantities of grain and was concerned mainly with pressures affecting the structural design of silos and bins. The Janssen formula (about 1898) and the work of Ketchum [1] form the highlights of that period. In more recent years, progress in mechanization, increasing plant capacities, and rising costs of labor have focused the attention of engineers on the problem of gravity flow of bulk solids. A great deal of work has been done with models, and flow patterns obtained in small scale bins have been described in several publications, for example [2, 3]. An attempt to develop a theory of flow of bulk solids was reported in 1954 [4, 5, 61 and presented to the in a paper [7] in the same year. AIME recommended the continuation of this work and, as a result, Engineering Foundation granted a sum of money to set up a Bulk Solids Flow Laboratory. Two and a half years ago the project gained the support of the University of Utah and a laboratory was set up on the campus of the University. This project is now in progress, it has received the support of the American Iron and Steel Institute and of Kaiser Engineers, Division of Henry J. Kaiser Company. The results obtained to date are summarized in this report.

Principal factors influencing equipment selection can be grouped into five basic categories. Tonnage Requirements, Ore and Waste Loading, transporting, and ground preparation equipment are largely determined by tonnage requirements. Generally, the greater the tonnage requirements, the larger the equipment size selected. Large size equipment is appropriate for a production of about six million tons (total) per month, medium size for three mil- lion tons, and small size for one million tons or less.
