Since the Buffalo Creek incident in February, 1972, Federal and state environmental agencies have had the pressure on the coal industry in the Appalachian area to close the coal processing plant water circuits. In an attempt to comply with this requirement, Eastern .Associated Coal Corp. decided to install a vacuum disc filter system at its Kopperston plant to eliminate the tailings pond and reduce the amount of plant make-up water. It was recognized at the time that the plant static thickener tailings would be a very difficult slurry to dewater because of its unusually high clay content. The following is a case history of the Kopperston installation and the refinements Eastern has made in its vacuum disc filter operation to increase efficiency.

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in current mining operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a serious hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. Requirements for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels in previous work has led to the development of a surface- operated automatic earth resistivity survey system and associated computer data processing system for military applications. Field demonstration tests of this system have resulted in successful detection of tunnels at depth-to- diameter ratios greater than ten to one. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar high-resolution earth resistivity system was designed and constructed for use as a potential means of detecting coal mine workings. The hardware and software aspects of the new system are described together with applications of the method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. Field tests are presented showing the detection of both air-filled and water-filled mine workings.

The Powderhorn complex as a source of perovskite (calcium titanate) containing about 1.5% rare earths has been examined in several recent feasibility studies. Much promising exploration and process research has been done in recent years. This paper is presented with cautious optimism and with the acknowledgment that there may be some technical and economic areas yet to be explored. The Powderhorn carbonatite and alkalic stock in Gunnison County, Colorado, lies about 203 airlines km southwest of Denver at an elevation of 2450 to 2750 m (see Figures land 2). All of the mineable ore bodies are owned by Buttes Resources Company of Houston, Texas.

The Safety Pays in Mining v2.0 web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app categorizes injury cost by part of body injured, by the cause of the injury, or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 150 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining v2.0 will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries and the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits and will provide some examples of services and personal protective equipment on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining version 2.0 web application by discussing the development and updates to the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app.

"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite. The design of coal-mine layouts is based on the knowledge of a broad range of geological and geotechnical parameters, which must be determined from a sequence of exploration programs. It follows that any weaknesses in selecting, determining, interpreting or utilizing these data are inevitably reflected into the mine-planning process. In this paper, the main methods of exploration are reviewed and evaluated with the emphasis on acquisition, interpretation and storage of variables pertaining to mine-design. Some common problems are highlighted and recommendations are given for improving the utilization of data and optimizing coal-mine design procedures.

The present research work deals with the effective utilization of hematite ore containing goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite losson- ignition (LOI) phases in pellet making without deteriorating product pellet properties by optimizing the induration cycle especially drying and preheating of pellets. Adequate drying and preheating of pellets before sintering is of prime importance to sustain the desired properties of pellets. Green pellets of + 8 to − 16 mm size were prepared in a laboratory disc pelletizer and indurated by varying drying and preheating temperatures in a laboratory Raising Hearth Furnace (RHF). Produced pellets were assessed for physical and metallurgical properties. Improvement in drying and preheating temperature simultaneously helped in mitigating fired pellets’ property deterioration. Drying at 300 °C and preheating at 750 °C helped in the maximum removal of matrix LOI from the pellets before firing and enabled the production of pellets of desired properties. Laboratory scale findings successfully implemented at existing 4.2 MTPA capacity pellet plant of JSW Steel Ltd. Vijayanagar and high LOI iron ores (IOs) utilised which resulted in reduction of average monthly pellet fines generation by ~2 wt. %.

The process of flotation is an extremely important solids separation technique employed in a wide variety of industrial process applications. Froth flotation is practiced in the coal industry to recover fines produced during the mining and cleaning of coal. A recent review article by Aplan (1) covers the processing variables encountered in the flotation of coal and the variety of chemicals and operating conditions which affect recovery. Numerous engineering and scientific studies have been performed with the goal of providing semifundamental laws of flotation behavior for improved screening of flotation chemicals, better equipment scale-up factors, etc. Often the results of such work are expressed in the form of mathematical models (e.g. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) which are potentially useful for evaluating (simulating) on paper such alternatives as possibles process operating or configuration changes, the effects of ore and reagent changes, etc. It appears to be commonly accepted that a complete scientific/engineering characterization of flotation is immensely complicated and not sufficiently developed at the present to accurately predict (or understand) many important industrial facets of flotation. Thus, one is often reduced to detailed experimental characterization in both the laboratory and plant in order to fully evaluate flotation changes or alternatives. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method of batch laboratory data characterization that is useful in evaluating flotation chemical reagents including froth flotation of coal. The approach consists of running a series of time-recovery curves in a batch float cell followed by the computer curve fitting of this data to a series of mathematical models based on semi-physical reasoning. The unknowns or parameters of these models are then optimally chosen so as to best fit the experimental data. Roping in hydrocyclones is a well-known phenomenon in mining and mineral industries which put serious restrictions on their continuous and maintenance free operation. Roping is mostly observed in association with high underflow solid concentrations which can be attributed to higher fraction of solids reporting to the underflow or the feed solid concentration itself being higher. This paper proposes a newly designed spigot with a truncated conical geometry which can allow for a rope-free discharge at higher feed solid concentrations. The experimental observations revealed that in the operation of a 50.8-mm-diameter hydrocyclone, roping ensued at 10% to 12.5% (wt%) feed solid concentration depending on feed inlet pressure for the cylindrical spigot, whereas with the modified spigot, rope free discharge was attained even at 25% (wt%) feed solid concentration.

From Alaska to Florida and California to Maine, the National Forest System (NFS) is host to unprecedented levels of prospecting and development. The NFS is large (191 million acres), geologically attractive from the mineral standpoint and relatively unexplored. Significant recent finds and developments involve silver, gold, platinum group metals, molybdenum, cobalt and phosphates. Exploration and development are closely regulated, but most of the NFS is open. The Forest Service endeavors to be a good host to the mineral industry, but increasingly is asked or forced to delay or disapprove mineral projects to protect the environment.

The role of geology in coal exploration, mine planning and mine development has, in the past, been relatively small. The primary reason for this lies in. the simplicity of geologic concepts that were necessary to bring these operations about. These concepts can be briefly stated as follows: 1) coal occurs in the beds or layers and is overlain and underlain by shales, sandstone or limestone in varying porportions, 2) each coal bed has been given a name and certain quality characteristics can often be associated with a named bed and 3) coal beds (and their adjoining rocks) are often folded into broad anticlines or synclines and, in some places, displaced or faulted. In actual practice, however, these simple principles have been found wanting. Thickening, thinning, pinch outs or changes in coal quality occurred but the occurrence was apparently unpredictable and the only real solution to such problems seemed to be practice and experience. This combined with ingeneous engineering solutions have provided answers to most questions. Perhaps a more fundamental reason that geology could offer so little input to coal mining is that the thickest, most persistant and best quality coal seams followed the above stated rules fairly well. In many areas, however, such seams are now nearing exhaustion and the increased demand for clean, non-polluting, safe energy is quickly bringing a need for techniques of exploration and mining procedures that will make development of formerly unminable seams a profitable venture. For the past 20 years some considerable body of knowledge has been added to the framework of the geology of sedimentary rocks and it is the purpose of this paper to present some of these newer ideas that will be useful in solving some of the present problems of coal exploration and development.

The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has changed greatly over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors, including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different than for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with the belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

The hydrology of in situ leach mining operations is being studied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines using a variety of techniques, and the Bureau has made significant advances in tracking and modeling the flow of leach solutions in rock formations. However, the influence that leach solution composition has on the hydrology of these systems is poorly understood, and geochemically-controlled changes in the hydrologic characteristic of ore deposits during in situ leach mining of porphyry-hosted, copper oxide ores have not been previously studied. The Cyprus Casa Grande in situ leach mining operation mines fracture-hosted and disseminated copper oxides (predominantly chrysocolla) hosted by granodiorite porphyry using a pattern of underground wells. The injection solution consists of sulfuric acid raffinate from a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. Chemical analysis of representative injection and recovery solutions reveals that gangue cation concentrations in these solutions are high, and geochemical modeling shows that the solutions are saturated or nearly saturated with respect to gypsum, jarosite, and various amorphous oxides. Precipitation of these solids is evoked by calcium-exchange reactions, rising pH, and perhaps locally rising redox potential, as the leach solution reacts with the ore minerals, host rocks, and the atmosphere. Mass and volume balance calculations show that approximately 25 cm of precipitates are formed per gram of copper recovered at Cyprus Casa Grande. The results of geochemical modeling agree with petrologic examination of pre-and post-leach core samples from the leached horizon. Moreover, hydrochemical modeling and hydrologic field data suggests that chemical precipitation causes significant decreases in porosity and permeability during in situ leach mining of porphyry-hosted, copper oxide ore.

Pyhasalmi is a massive sulfide orebody located in central Finland. The mine has been in operation since 1962. The flotation concentrator produces Cu, Zn, Pb and pyrite concentrates. The plant has used an on-stream analyzer for process control since 1968. The original analyzer has overlived a few generations of minicomputers, but the analytical parts are essentially unchanged. The on-stream analyzer is a critical component in plant process control system, which has made Pyhasaltni one of the pioneers in the art of computer control and optimization of flotation plants. The paper summarizes the experiences gained from the use of the high performance elemental analyzer system and the proven benefits from the use of on-stream analyzers at a complex sulfide flotation. The aging analyzer is approaching the end of its useful life. A new state of the art analyzer system is undergoing testing at Pyhasalmi.

Evolution is continuing in the field of rock drilling, Campbell Limestone Company is experimenting in the higher air pressure phase of drilling, It has been determined that there is a definite relationship between Air Pressure, Penetration Rate, Bit & Tool Wear and Life, In our drilling we have determined that &e higher air pressure gives a better penetration rate with less bit wear per foot. Drilling with 180 to 200 PSI air pressure, instead of 100 PSI for air and/or churn drills, has decreased our primary costs by approximately one half.

The main purpose of this study was to find the optimum values for factors affecting the Zn recovery rate using oxine or dithizone as a chelating agent collector during flotation in a Hallimond tube. Eight control factors, including four levels of pH, oxine/dithizone, corn starch, sodium thiosulfate, sodium citrate, sodium silicate, conditioning and floating durations were considered in a Taguchi experimental design technique. An L32 orthogonal array was applied to determine the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the optimum conditions and the most significant parameters affecting the reaction rate. Analysis of the experiments using the Taguchi approach indicated that pH had the highest contribution to the recovery rate of zinc oxide particles. The results showed that the recovery rate of zinc increased by 43.4 ± 3.0% and 24.9 ± 3.2% using oxine and dithizone, respectively, under optimum conditions with a confidence level of 90%.

The Mexican fluorspar industry is faced with and will face serious problems, some of their own making and others beyond their control. However, they still offer the most secure source of fluorspar for North American' consumers. Since 1975, even in light of declining markets, they have, increased then production capabilities' as shown in Table #1. In analyzing Table #1, we note that Compania Miners Rio Colorado has closed down due to their ore reserves being exhausted. Fluorita de Rio Verde expanded their acid grade fluorspar capacity in anticipation of additional North American business. Campania Miners Las Cuevas presumably increased capacity to meet their North American contractual commitments and to supply their own hydrofluoric acid plant (Fluorex) at Juarez, Mexico. Historically, the Mexican fluorspar industry has relied on the United States as the mainstay for their sales. As shown in Tables #2 and #3, the Mexican share of the United States market has moderately decreased. However, as noted in Table #4 the volume loss is substantial as explained below.

Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors including sample collection and preparation, counting techniques, and the operational definition of asbestos in use. Three different definitions have been used in the study of environmental samples; these are summarized in Table 1. [ ]

The Flotaire Flotation Cell is a simple, efficient hydraulic/pneumatic Flotation Cell that has no moving parts. It is normally used in conjunction with a surfactant (frother) in which case the combination is known as "The Flotaire System". On many ores, metallurgical efficiencies are substantially increased and operating costs reduce. For example, in floating phosphate rock, it is not unusual for BPL recovery to be increased more than 10%, the major increase being due to floating coarse phosphate, up to 14 mesh, and the difficult to float phosphate. Substantial improvements have also been made on coal, mica, vermiculite, kaolin, barite, copper, etc.

A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover NaOH and to reduce its content in red mud. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and goes through press filters, which enables the recovery of NaOH and decreases the moisture content. It is well known that red mud is one of the most important sources of scandium. For this reason, the goal of this work was to characterize a Brazilian red mud (BRM) for scandium recovery. The sample was collected after the press filter system process. Analysis of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed. Microwave digestion using an acid mixture was carried out to determine the concentration of the main elements. Fe2O3 represented 40% of the BRM, and the Sc concentration was 43 mg/kg. The SiO2 content was 24%, which is the highest value found in the literature, whereas the sodium concentration was the lowest. A literature review was carried out to compare results with BRM, as well as the current studies for recovery of scandium by the leaching/ion-exchange process. Scandium recovery using a leaching/ion exchange process may be possible with efficiency higher than 90%. The greatest challenge is the occurrence of silica gel formation during leaching.
