Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is linited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized.

Echo Bay Minerals operates a 650 tpd gravity float gold circuit at their Manhattan facility. The objective of this paper was to document the gold recovery by size distribution. This was accomplished by studying the material balance of each size fraction as it progressed through each gravity Circuit separator. It proved to be an impossible task. Figure I depicts the gravity circuit. The gravity cyclone underflow goes to two duplex Pan American type jigs. The jig overflow reports to the OK Flash Float Cell. The cyclone hutch product is reground and goes to a full size wilfly table. The rougher table concentrate reports to a pilot size Wi1fly cleaner table. The cleaner and rougher table tails circulate back to the jig feed. The gravity circuit was composite sampled for two to four hours per day for four days. Each sample was taken every 20 minutes. Each composite sample was filtered, dried, repu1ped, and screened through a wet/dry screening procedure. Each size fraction was checked for gold value by fire assay fussion technique. A material balance was run on each size fraction. The tables listing the results are enclosed.

The purpose of roasting gold ores is to release for extraction, typically by cyanidation, the small particles of gold which are surrounded by refractory stone. The roasting simply opens up passages for the penetration of solution into the interior of the ore particles. This is accomplished by the removal by volatilization or formation of volatile oxides of certain constituents such as sulfur, arsenic or antimony. Temperature is an important parameter. High temperatures tend to form a dense iron particle rather than a "spongy" calcine. The dense iron particles result in lower gold recoveries. High temperature can cause melting of some components which also results in gold encapsulation. Roasting of refractory gold ore concentrates has been practiced for decades. Multiple hearth, rotary kiln and muffle reactors were first used for roasting. Fluid bed roasting provided a low capital cost, low maintenance technology with better process control and soon became the favored technology. The first fluid bed concentrate roasters were commissioned in the late 1940's. Early fluid beds were "bubbling" type. Environmental considerations did not significantly impact on the design. Feedstocks were highly exothermic and reaction rates were relatively rapid. Roasting today must compete with other technologies for treatment of refractory ores. Ore bodies which are not

Of these, 11 were in the industrialized world, 13 in the Third World. By 1985, the number had dramatically surged to a world-wide total of 145, with the greatest growth among the developing countries to 110, an increase of almost 1000%.

Widespread high-calcium limestones in New Mexico region are low -in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds deleterious for sulfur removal usage. Thick limestones in Mississippian Escabrosa, Lake Valley, and Leadville, Pennsylvanian Madera and Hermosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, Permian Hueco and Capitan, Cretaceous U-Bar, and some Cenozoic travertines are high-calcium units. Significant outcrops are in mountains of southwestern, south-central, central, southeastern and north-central New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, southwestern Colorado, and northwestern Chihuahua. Coal-fired powerplants are mainly in northwestern New Mexico and eastern Arizona, thus transport is mainly by railroad.

INTRODUCTION The project described in this paper is designed to provide a standard and flexible method by which data can be exchanged among different systems and packages in common use for geo- logical modelling and mine planning, with substantial savings in ad hoc programming which is expensive and produces interface software that is difficult to maintain. Such packages include specialised applications such as Vulcan, Surpac, Datamine, and Gemcom software, and the Whittle pit optimisation programs, and more general products such as AutoCad, Microstation, and Maplnfo, and database management systems through a generic SQL interface. The data translator is built around the CSIRO Data Model and GeoEditor, and will make widely available the benefits of the Data Model by adding functionality to its implementation in an industry- standard language and style, with interfaces to important geological and mining software products used by the industry, while including also the visualisation and editing capabilities of the GeoEditor which provides the functional framework within which the Data Translator is developed. The Data Translator is intelligent in the sense that it is not a black-box solution but allows visualisation and validation of data during transfer; furthermore it provides a means for changing abstraction levels during the transfer operation. There have been few similar efforts to address this problem. It is not a problem which is likely to be solved in any general or long- term way by any individual commercial software vendor. THE CSIRO DATA MODEL A wide variety of software tools have entered the exploration and mining industries via different pathways. Examination of these pathways and the origins of the software illuminates the types of data transfer problems and difficulties which might occur in the day to day life of exploration and mining operations. In exploration, the focus is normally on a large area (>5000km2) which is explored primarily in two dimensions. For 20 exploration purposes, geographical information systems (GIs) software, image processing software, and, in some cases, 20 computer aided design (CAD) software have been employed. Typically, GIs soft- ware is used the most by lands and tenements personnel and government geological survey organisations, image processing software is used the most by geophysicists, and 20 CAD software is used the most by drafting and geology personnel. In contrast, within the mining environment, almost all activities have 3D character. In this realm, 3D CAD software and specialised mine planning and design software are important. Specialised mine planning and design software is similar to 30 CAD software, but typically has additional capabilities such as specialised modules for surveying, drill hole data operations, open pit design and optimisation, underground mine design, mining block model creation, and/or ore reserve calculations. Unfortunately, the different origins of the software in exploration and mining lead directly to problems in data exchange and the design of seamless software systems. These problems result from the different data management strategies employed by the different classes of software. In order to address these problems, CSIRO Exploration and Mining and CSIRO Division of Information Technology have been investigating the structure, character, and syntax of data and soft- ware present in computer-aided exploration and mining activities since early 1993. The goal of this effort is to 1) systematically ex- amine the breadth and depth of the data in use within exploration and mining, and to 2) promote a data organisation strategy which is broad enough and comprehensive enough to enable wiser soft- ware design and easier data transfer. In the short term a data model can be used to improve data transfer; in the longer term it is hoped that a data model framework will help object-oriented concepts to enter the next generation of geoscientific software. The data model is described in more detail by Power et al., 1995. THE DATA TRANSLATOR PROJECT The CSIRO Data Model provides a basis for a very wide range of applications in geology and mining. It has been developed over the past two years by a joint team from the Division of Exploration and Mining and the Division of Information Technology, and its principal purpose is to provide a comprehensive and self consistent model of the geometric and topological properties of geological and mining data. The project is being carried out by CSIRO with the support of Australian mining companies through AMIRA (the Australian Mining Industries Research Association). A small area in the Alabama Piedmont was studied to determine if metallic enrichment was associated with local magnetic anomalies. Cores from two holes in these magnetic anomalous areas have sulfide (pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite) film on slicken-side and fracture surfaces. Two hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from the top of the "B" horizon on 1, 000 foot centers over the general trend of magnetic anomalies. Soil samples were leached with a 1:2. 7 mixture of HF and H2SO4 and the dilute filtrate analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and Cd, using atomic absorption methods. Concentration-value maps were prepared for each element. Small areas of anomalous concentrations were defined for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Ni. Some of these areas generally coincides with magnetic anomalies. Concentration values (ppm) range from: Cu 165.0 - 0. 5; Pb 265. 0 - 0.0; Zn 1386.0 - 43. 0; Ni 187.0 - 10.0; Co 207.0 - 6. 5; Cr 117.5 - 2.0; Mo 95.0 - 0.0; and Cd 32. 5 - 2.0. Studies of other magnetic anomalies appear warranted.

The Greenwich Collieries Co. is a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Mines Corporation, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the PP&L Co. which serves the northeastern portion of Pa. PP&L annually consumes about 11 million tons of coal per year and is the largest consumer of both bituminous and anthracite coal on the eastern seaboard. Development work for Greenwich started in 1969. The coarse coal plant was constructed in 1970, with the raw fines bypassed. This worked very well for our requirements at that time; however, the Greenwich mining plans were extensively changed, longwall mining units were installed and low coal was encountered, resulting in dirtier coal, a finer coal and an ever increasing ash in the shipped product. All this demanded a more efficient ash removal process for the fine coal fraction. In 1971, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency were pushing for the now stringent sulphur emission limits at our power plants. The Greenwich Mine coal reserves contained large quantities of 3.5 to 4% sulphur along with some low sulphur reserves. It was, therefore, essential that any new plant have the capability of efficient sulphur removal to meet the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency required limits. To meet these limits our design would have to be capable of producing a product of 2.0% sulphur or less.

The effect of reaction conditions on the desulphurization of oil sand coke residues has been studied. The variables investigated were temperature, reaction time, heat transfer resistance, and mode of caustic soda addition. The results obtained show that oil sand coke desulphurization increases with temperature, reaction time, and heat transfer rate. In an oxidative environment, coke combustion during molten caustic leaching (MCL) commences at temperatures above 500°C. The mode of caustic addition has no effect on coke desulphurization.

The Carr Fork mine is located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Bingham or West Mountain District, adjacent to the Bingham open pit copper mine. Applied geology at Carr Fork, by Anaconda Minerals Company personnel, includes detailed geologic mapping and sampling of underground workings, logging and sampling of drill core and cuttings, and the preparation and posting of geologic maps and cross sections for geologic interpretation, ore reserve calculation, mine operations, and long range planning. Accurate and easily understood graphic recording of Carr Fork geology is essential for optimum use by operating and engineering personnel. The design and implementation of exploration, development and definition drilling programs, research into geological spatial relationships, and analysis of structural complexities of the Carr Fork deposit are also integral parts of the applied geology program.

It is a pleasure to speak to this group about special crusher installations which are in the bauxite and phosphate rock processing industries. The installations to be discussed demonstrate the variety of conditions, materials, and results desired which must be evaluated before a selection is made from the specialized crusher technology available today. Those of you who are closely involved with phosphate rock and phosphate products processing will find some of this information a bit interesting and perhaps alien to your own descriptions or every day references. It is given from a "crusher" manufacturer's viewpoint and therefore is infused With our flair and language. Cyprus Sierrita is a major producer of copper and molybdnum from its Sierrita and Twin Buttes open pit mines south of Tucson, Arizona. Both pits were started in the late 60's and are in excess of 1500 feet in depth. Sierrita has utilized a Cat 992C Remote Controlled Loader since January 1993. The loader was justified to increase SAFETY and PROFITS at Sierrita. It has exceeded all expectations. As of June 1993, it had produced additional profits totaling more than $1,500,000.

The folded Appalachians are a physiographic province of eastern North America extending from Nova Scotia to Alabama. The province strikes through the state of Pennsylvania (see Fig. 1) comprising roughly 20 percent of the state and it is here that the focus of this paper will attend. The province is a thick sedimentary sequence which was compressed into a folded mountain belt by the Appalachian Orogeny which terminated at the end of the Permian. The stratigraphy contains both carbonate and non-carbonate rocks as a reflection of the depositional environment at any specific time and place during the Paleozoic geosynclinal accumulation. Although a great deal of variety and difference exists in the geology from one end to another, a common thread of structural and stratigraphic style exists. Carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, comprise a substantial percentage of the total Appalachian stratigraphy and are interbedded with clastic materials such as sandstones, siltstones, and shales. The carbonate rocks are extensively mined and collectively represent a vast economic resource.

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Elko. Nevada, U.S.A. and produces between 250 and 300 thousand ounces of gold annually. The Joint Venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining Company and 30% owned by Meridian Gold Company. Independence Mining Company is the operator. The Jerrin Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 mining a series of open pit mines. Since the early 1990's, the discovery of deeper ores has required the joint venture to develop and mine a significant portion of its annual production utilizing underground mining methods. Underground production started with the West Generator Mine in 1993 followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Presently, two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is budgeted to produce 128 thousand ounces in 1997. This paper documents the major transition/redevelopment of the Jerritt Canyon mining methods.

The first of two initial 650-mw units of the Paradise Steam Station, located on the banks of the Green River in the south-central portion of the western Kentucky coal basin, is scheduled for operation in late fall of 1962. Location of the site is shown on the map of figure 1. This plant will be the eighth, large-capacity,, modern station built by TVA in a series starting with Johnsonville, operated first in 1951. During that period of 10 years,, unit sizes have increased from a capability of 125 mw to 500 mw at the recently completed Widows Creek Unit 7 addition and at Paradise to 650 mw. This new unit will take its place in a power system that serves an area of some 80,000; square miles with a present installed capacity of over 12,000 mw. Upon completion of the Paradise units and other additional hydro and steam units presently under construction, the system capacity will have reached over 15,000 mw. Projected load estimates indicate that this system will provide a margin' of slightly under 10 percent of dependable capacity above peak demand at that tire. One Paradise 650-mw unit at that time will represent approximately 4 percent of the total system installed capacity.

Newmont has been on a focused path of improving operations for many years. After the merger of Newmont and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Newmont created significant synergies of over $50 million per year in Nevada, primarily through optimal ore movements and consolidation of various functions. During the current period of low gold and copper prices, Newmont has refocused its efforts on efficient operations worldwide. This paper will describe the methods and programs that continue to be implemented at Newmont's many mine facilities in Nevada. Newmont has used a combination of computer technology, optimal use of infrastructures, procurement strategies, functional consolidation, enhanced mine planning and a variety of available metallurgical processing options to decrease the cost of operations and increase profitability.

The line scan video photometer is a personal computer (PC) based, software-driven instrument which is used for the real time, on-line analysis of industrial process streams. The novelty of the instrument lies in the integration of its various components: (l) a true Red/Green/Blue (R/G/B) color video camera; (2) a unique, line-scan color sample and hold technique which provides a 4 to 20 mA analog signal to a commercial 12 bit analog to digital (A/D) converter; (3) software which converts data through a color absorbance algorithm to correlate elemental color to concentration; and (4) software-based control which utilizes color data, along with temperature and conductivity data to control process equipment. The photometer can be used for noninvasive analysis wherever color hues are representative of process variables such as chemical concentrations or mineralogy color reflectance. The line scan video photometer has been successfully demonstrated in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) and ball mill circuits of copper producers.

Microscopic observation of physical and chemical changes which take place in various materials under conditions of elevated temperature and controlled atmosphere can often yield valuable insight into the fundamental physical-chemical reactions which control processes in which these materials play an active role. The technique of high-temperature microscopy thus becomes an important tool for basic and applied research in pyrometallurgical and allied fields. Investigators have long been aware of this and through the years have applied the technique to a wide variety of problems. However, up to this time, application has been on a rather limited scale due to the high initial cost of equipment and the relatively low rate of production of data resulting from the complexity of the apparatus and attendant problems in manipulation.

Two of Peabody Western Coal Company's mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison's Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.
