Introduction During the past several years, persistent concerns about an economic slowdown in India have tempered capital-expan¬sion plans. This has encouraged companies to find methods of increasing the capacity of existing production equipment. One of the more cost-effective methods of increasing produc¬tion capacity without major capital investment is to improve equipment maintenance to prevent needless machine down¬time. This can have a significant financial impact because of reduced maintenance costs and increased machine availabil¬ity. The maintenance program employs different techniques, but the analysis of the vibration behavior of machine compo¬nents to assess their condition was found to be the most accurate technique for monitoring various machine disorders. A dragline that handles overburden in open pit mines is one of the more capital-intensive pieces of production equip¬ment. It is imperative that the machine be run at its optimum capacity under the prevailing environmental conditions. Condition monitoring of the various components of the dragline through vibration analysis not only improves the machines availability but also ensures a long operation time free from sudden failure. This paper describes the application of vibration monitor¬ing and analysis techniques to assess the components of a W2000 dragline. The paper reveals that condition monitoring through vibration analysis can be as valuable in failure prevention as it is in failure analysis. Finally, the paper presents an approach to a knowledge-based expert system to the quick and correct diagnosis of mechanical faults in a dragline. Equipment A dragline is an intermittent-discharge-type excavator having a long boom at one end. Unlike other excavators, the bucket is not rigidly held by the frame structure. In favorable geomining conditions, the intensive operation of these exca¬vators is the least-expensive means of overburden removal. The basic working elements of this equipment are the hoist system, the crowd and retract system, the wing mechanism and the propel mechanism. The walking dragline is accepted as the most economical machine for stripping overburden at depths of up to 60 m (200 ft). They are electrically powered and the various motions are effected by individual drives. The Ward-Leonard system is used to provide the optimum flexibility in controlling different dc-drive motors. To mini¬mize the cost of mineral extraction, the largest such machine in India has a 24-m3 (850-cu ft) bucket with a boom length of 96 m (315 ft). Draglines are very costly, and considerable financial penal¬ties may arise from sudden stoppages due to component fail¬ures. Thus, operational reliability is of the greatest importance. Active measures are now being taken to minimize downtime by adopting condition-based maintenance techniques. Though a number of techniques come under this scheme, it has been observed that assessing the health of the dragline by measuring vibration is the best method of determining the dynamic behavior of its various rotating components to avoid any catastrophic failure. Based on criticality, the vibration-behav¬ior of the following components are studied: • motor-generator unit, • exciter unit, • hoist motor-gearbox unit, • hoist drum-gearbox unit, • drag motor-gearbox unit, • drag drum-gearbox unit and • swing motor unit The approach Increases in the vibration levels in different subsystems of the dragline were observed due to the presence of faults such as unbalance, misalignment, looseness and bad bearings. A vibration behavior study included the measurement of vibra¬tion level, trend analysis of time-domain vibration signals and vibration frequency analysis at bearing points of the components. A vibration meter, a vibration analyzer and a data collector are used. Vibration-level measurement. When the dragline was assembled and put into operation for the first time, vibration data were collected to generate baseline data for the equip¬ment (based on International Standard ISO 2372). INTRODUCTION Radon, thoron and their airborne daughter products may result in a significant biological hazard when they are concentrated in enclosed places such as mines, houses and caves. High concentrations of radon and its particulate daughter have long, been known to be a causative agent for lung cancer to uranium miner: (Archer 1973). More recently increasing concern has been expressed on the possible health hazards associated with long term exposures over large population groups to low levels of radon daughters (Cohen 1980, Stranden 1980). Due to its peculiar geological features, Italy has various natural environments where the content of uranium and thorium in the soil may increase underground radioactivity. The presence in Italy of many underground waters rich in radon may be considered a further important source of radon in underground mines. A preliminary survey of the radon and radon daughter air concentrations in italian underground mines was started in 1971 (Bottino 1973). Furthermore many studies (Sciocchetti 1978, Sciocchetti 1980, Clemente 1980) have been performed during the last ten year to characterize the natural radiation environment in Italy. It has been also demonstrated that 21OPb/21OPo skeletal burden in spa workers and non-uranium miners can be heavily increased by the exposure (short or/and prolonged) to high levels of radon daughter air concentration (Clemente 1980). All these studies have been of great help to put in the right prospective the radiation hazards linked to the underground working activity in non-uranium italian mines. Two main actions have been prosecuted from 1971 until today in order to evaluate in greater detail such radiation hazards and then, when needed, to obtain their reduction to levels which may be considered acceptable. The two actions may schematically described as the following: - Measurement of the radon and daughter (and thoron and daughter when needed) concentrations in most of the italian non-uranium mines. The assessment of the radiation hazards linked to both the annual average lung exposure and the 210 Pb - 210 Po annual average dose to the skeleton is then performed for each considered mine by taking into account the main parameters characteristic of the mine. - Set up of a national regulatory recommendation on the permissible limits for the radiation exposure of workers due to underground mining activity. Such recommendation have been established in 1978 and have been designed in order to implement a national radiation protection practice during the underground mining activity. In this paper a summary description of the results obtained during the execution of these two actions will be given. MATERIAL AND METHODS Measurement of Radon, Thoron and their Daughter Products The excution of the planned survey requires the availability of specific techniques and instruments for measuring the different parameters characterizing the radon, thoron and their daughter exposure in mines. A reference laboratory was set up for the development and the standardization of the measurement procedures. Measurements of radon, thoron and daughter concentrations are performed by various methods: instanteneous or grab sampling methods and continuous read out monitors. The radon concentration is usually measured by a modified version of the two filter method. Mine air is drawn into a polyethylene bag and the sample is there after injected into a two filter tube; after sampling the exit filter is counted by the alpha spectrometric technique. The measurements is completed in a total time of less than 25 minutes at a sensitivity level as low as 3.7 Bq/m3 for a tube volume of 15 1. The measurement of radon and thoron daughter concentration and of the relevant potential alpha energy concentration is performed by means of a portable spectrometric apparatus which was developed at our laboratory (Sciocchetti 1981). The device allows multiple operating modes: instantaneous or brief sampling period and automatic cycles; computer data processing is then provided. The instruments that measure continuously radon concentration over long periods of time are of two types: a continuous scintillation monitor and an automated two filter

Aluminum silicate hydrosol synthesis and characterization are discussed. Plausible polymeric aluminosilicate species are presented together with their effect on electrokinetics of selected minerals and flotation response of various ores. The addition of aluminosilicate hydrosol to porphyry and oxide copper ores and to a tungsten ore resulted in enhanced flotation recoveries ranging from about 1.5 to 5 percent. A significant portion of the nation's mineral resources are presently lost in the form of particles with very fine grain size. In the case of copper, for example, approximately 225 million tons of ore are concentrated by flotation per year in the United States. Total losses from porphyry ores are generally 15 to 20 percent with half of these losses being finely-divided copper sulfide minerals which do not respond to flotation. The additional 5 to 10 percent loss is the result of copper oxide minerals which are not floated. The losses of copper sulfide minerals are thought to be due in part to the lack of appropriate dispersion of the finely-divided solids less than 20 microns in size. To effect dispersion in flotation systems, sodium silicate is commonly added. Enhanced dispersion effectiveness is achieved when polyvalent metal salts are combined with sodium silicate. Since originally described by Patek (1), numerous workers have explored the utility of metal silicates. Makrousov (2), Belash et al. (3), and Eigeles (1950) (4) showed the applicability of these reagents to calcite/apatite and fluorite/calcite ores. Mercade (5, 6) reported depression of calcite in the presence of 3.33/1 mole ratio Al/Si hydrosols prepared from Type N sodium silicate (Si02/Na20 ratio 3.22/1) and 1% A12(SO4) 3•18H20 solutions. He importantly observed that the colloidal precipitates did not play a significant role in dispersion and depression but that the soluble species were responsible for this action. Patented work by this author described metal silicates used to depress calcite in scheelite flotation using 1% metal salt (FeSO4•7H2O, CoSO4•7H2O, etc.) and 5% Type N sodium silicate solutions to produce hydrosols with Si/Fe or Si/Co ratios of 8.79/1. Aluminum (III) ion systems were less effective as depressants than the iron and cobalt systems. Yang (8, 9) has studied metal silicate sols for use in the flotation of lithium and ultra-fine hematite ores. Using 10/1 Si/Fe mole ratio hydrosols prepared from 2% ferric nitrate, Fe(NO3)3.9H20, and 5% Type N sodium silicate solutions, solutions, he showed that the hydrosols either modify the slime particle surfaces or are adsorbed on the slime particles preventing anionic collector adsorption. In a subsequent patent, Yang also reported the use of these hydrosols as dispersants for beneficiation of lithium ores. Recent studies of aluminum silicate hydrosols in the flotation of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and scheelite have been reported using Si/Al dispersants prepared from 5% Type N sodium silicate and 0.1 M aluminum chloride (A1C13.6H20) solutions. Dispersant properties were shown to be dependent upon the method of synthesis, supernatant pH, and the hydrosol Si/Al mole ratio. Polymeric soluble species in these hydrosolsupernatants have been proposed as the active dispersant species. Aluminosilicate hydrosols are synthesized by the general reaction scheme presented in Figure 1. Commercial sodium silicates are available with ratios of SiO2 to Na20 of 1.60-3.25. The sample which is most frequently employed is Type N whose ratio of Si02/Na20 is 3.22/1.00. Gel filtration chromatography and NMR studies have shown that these sodium silicates contain numerous species of molecular weight from 325-2,000 gm/mole. Monomeric, oligomeric and higher molecular weight linear polymeric arrangements of these structures are found in these solutions.

Mining companies, as developers of natural resources, are being forced to deal with the potential long-term liabilities of past, present, and future mining operations. As discussed in a previous paper (Cobb, et al., 1987), these liabilities can include solid waste disposal corrective action programs (state or federal actions), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), (Superfund) (state or federal actions), or natural resource damage claims (typically filed by state agencies and provisions specified in CERCLA). These potential liabilities are very real, and should dramatically impact the way a company views its exploration and development programs, and operating mines.

J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point O travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex '85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73 -83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4600 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (la in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the afore- mentioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf -Forschungshefle, 1984, NO. 5, pp. 219-223. INTRODUCTION Lead and zinc are today rightly regarded as sister metals. Historically, however, they differ markedly with lead being known and in general use as the metal since 3000 BC in several countries which at that time might have been described as mature economies. Zinc was not isolated and recognised as an industrial metal with distinct and valuable properties until about 1700-1800 AD (although it had, of course, been utilised as a constituent of brass for some 2000 years previously). c were well established as industrial metals by the beginning of the 20th century. The present paper briefly reviews the overall growth in world consumption* and changes in the three main areas which today represent the mature economies or industrialised areas, i. e. ,Europe, the United States and Japan. Trends in overall consumption are determined by the demands for the individual uses for lead and zinc. The changes in patterns of use in the industrialised areas - individually and collectively - and reasons for the changes are also considered. LONG TERM TRENDS - 1900-1984 The World Picture Since the beginning of the 20th century the world consumption of lead (3.9 million tonnes in 1984) has grown almost fourfold and that of zinc (4.7 million tonnes in 1984) is almost eleven times greater than it was in 1900. The long-term trend has been one of continuing expansion for both. metals although the pattern has been severely disturbed at certain periods, for example in the years immediately following the two world wars and at times of marked recessions in industrialised areas. Apart from such major setbacks, new levels of consumption have been established regularly every few years. Recently, however, consumption has not really grown and with only a slow and partial recovery in world industrial activity at present, there is no indication that the peak consumptions of 4.2 million tonnes of lead, set in 1979, and 4.8 million tonnes of zinc (1973) will be exceeded in the near future. The growth in world lead and zinc consumption since 1900 is shown in Figure 1 (which includes changes in copper and aluminium for comparison). Overall growth over the period 1900-1984 has been about two percent a year for lead and about three percent for zinc (annual growth for copper has also been about three percent). Increases in tonnage consumption and growth rates by decade for lead and zinc are summarised in Table I. However, the growth rates by decade sometimes conceal very large individual annual increases and decreases. For example, in 1975 lead consumption fell by 13 percent and zinc consumption by 22 percent compared to 1974. In 1976 consumption of lead and zinc rose by 12 percent and 18 percent respectively. The years when consumption 'landmarks' (ie one, two, three and four million tonnes) were first reached are shown on Table 2. Clearly, the pattern of shorter periods being required to attain each extra million tonnes of consumption was broken in the 1970's. The consumption of zinc overtook that of lead for the first time in 1940, and since 1946 has always been at a higher level. Trends in industrialised areas The two key industrialised areas at the beginning of the 20th century were Europe and the United States which between them accounted for some 95 percent of world lead consumption and 98 percent of zinc consumption. Figures 2 and 3 show the growth in lead and zinc consumption, and Figures 4 and 5 the percentage shares for each area since 1900. Europe has usually been the major user of lead except for some years in the 1920fs, most of the 40's and early 50's when consumption in the United States was larger. In 1900, Europe accounted for about 64 percent of world lead consumption and the United States just over 30 percent. Currently, Europe takes about 40 percent of world consumption and the

The 1996 Arizona Conference was held in Tucson on Dec. 8 and 9. Attendance was 648, a 12% increase from the 1995 conference. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, representing SME sections from throughout Arizona and adjacent areas. In addition to those representing mining and processing operations in the Arizona region, the meeting was well attended by interested parties from throughout North America. These included vendors, consultants, academia, research organizations and corporate management. The technical program highlighted the meeting. It consisted of a keynote address and morning and afternoon technical sessions. In the technical sessions, 23 papers were presented by the mining, hydrometallurgical, smelting, geology and mineral-processing divisions. The conference was then capped by a banquet that included a talk by a noted economist. Keynote address The program was kicked off by a keynote address titled "Forecasting for the 105th Congress," by Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ). He was elected to Arizona's Fourth Congressional District in 1994. Shadegg serves on the House Budget Committee, the Resources Committee and the watchdog Government Reform Committee. He stressed the familiar conservative positions of reducing government spending, balancing the budget and states rights. As a member of the House Resources Committee, Shadegg stated his support for the mining industry. Technical sessions Mining division. Two of the five presentations described developments at two Arizona mining operations. T.J. Swendseid of Phelps Dodge presented a paper titled "New developments at Morenci" and P. Garretson of BHP presented a paper titled "Startup of the Robinson Project." Morenci continues to expand its operation and recently broke records for production. Other developments at Morenci included the completion of a 600-m (2,000-ft) drainage tunnel and stockpile rehandling. In addition, Phelps Dodge moved Morenci's crusher plant. It was completely disassembled and reassembled in just eight days. Another interesting presentation was "Predictive maintenance techniques for large electric shovels at Cyprus Sierrita," presented by T. Ritzel of Cyprus Amax. The presentation described high-technology methods for predicting maintenance problems. These methods included vibration analysis, ultrasonic detection, infrared thermography, electrical measurements and tribology (the science of lubricant evaluation). The benefits of these techniques are reduced downtime of the equipment, as was demonstrated in case studies at the mine. The other presentations were "Introduction to NOSA 5-star safety program," by R. McKinnon, BHP Copper North America, and "A new design guideline for mine sealing," by K. Fuenkajorn, Rock Engineering International. Hydrometallurgical division. The hydrometallurgical session consisted of five papers. These included a presentation titled "Recovery of gold and silver using guanidine-based extractants," by M. Vining of Henkel Corp., Tucson, AZ. In this presentation, guanidine-based extractants LIX-79 and AURIX resin were introduced. LIX-79 was shown to have applications in copper-gold and high silver ores. In ammonia-cyanide leaching, AURIX was shown to be more selective in CIL vs. RIL comparisons. Other papers in the hydrometallurgical division included "Application of cobalt in the copper industry," by J. Hawke, OMG Apex Inc.; "Series parallel conversions and production gains at Cyprus Miami Mining's dump leach and solvent extraction operation," by E. Bilson of Cyprus Amax; "Lead alloy anode corrosion at the San Manuel SXEW tankhouse," by W .M. Gort of BHP Copper and "Hydrometallurgical treatment of copper refinery slimes," by B.C. Wesstrom of Phelps Dodge. Smelting division. Three papers were presented in the smelting division session. These included updates and reports on improvements at the Hayden, Hidalgo and BHP San Manuel smelters. For example, W.A. Dutton of Phelps Dodge presented "Recent improvements at the Hidalgo Smelter." These changes were aimed at reducing environmental emissions and increasing production. They included modifications to the fugitive-gas collection system to reduce particulate emissions, rubber lining the acid plant scrubbers to reduce corrosion and the installation of a cold lime softening system for water treatment. Equally interesting papers were presented by D. Norton of Asarco, Hayden, AZ, in a paper titled "Update of the Hayden smelter process," and by D. Jones of BHP Copper, San Manuel, AZ, in a paper titled "Update on first campaign of the BHP San Manuel Copper." Geology division. The session began with a paper that outlined the progress of an exploration project in South America. "The Pierina exploration project, Ancash Province, Peru" was presented by J.D. Lowell, Lowell Mineral Exploration, Rio Rico, AZ. Another paper was then presented on a copper deposit in Grant County, New Mexico. "Zonation of supergene copper minerals at Hanover Mountain, Grant

I. INTRODUCTION During the course of our activities in assisting mining companies, we have had access to the monitoring results for personnel from a large number of uranium mines. The results differ greatly from one mine to another. One of our objectives has been to discover the origin of these differences. It is evident that they are largely due to variations in the geological context, to mining methods, and to the organization of the work ; but we also found that the rigor with which measures are implemented to prevent the personnel from being exposed to radiations is also a cause. In order to advise mining operators effectively, we have asked ourselves the following question Given the dosimetric results of a mining site, how can it be known - if occupational exposure has been reduced to the lowest possible level (dose optimization principle recommended by the ICRP) ; - if the exposures were justified, which would not necessarily be the case following a questionable choice of the mining method, for instance, or a lack of efficiency in the maintenance and repairs of ventilation apparatus or even an excess of radiation protection. It is necessary to establish some criteria, while taking into consideration the specific conditions for each mine, in order to determine whether a mining company is adequately implementing radiation protection procedures. This need led us to attempt a modelization of the occupational exposures of uranium miners ; the preliminary phase is presented here. Although voluntarily still very basic, this model makes it possible to demonstrate the role of certain dynamic or passive variables. Moreover, the model presents the concept of specific irradiation of a mining site equal to the collective dose received per ton of uranium metal supplied to the uranium mill. The specific irradiation can therefore be used to indicate the effectiveness of radiation protection procedures at a given mining site. This model can be used for - previsional exposure studies based on the use of data gathered at each site, making it possible to compare various work methods and to determine prevention means ; - qualification of "radiation protection" procedures at a mining site ; - detection of unjustified exposures ; - research of ways to reduce inevitable exposures. 2. DETRIMENT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH A GIVEN EXPOSURE DISTRIBUTION Respecting exposure limits ensures that delayed stochastic effects are the only health risks to workers. If the hypothesis of linearity in the dose-effect relationship is applied, the detriment to a group of workers is proportional to the sum of exposure for all the workers, or the collective exposure usually expressed as man x rem. On this point the linearity of effects hypothesis makes it possible to consider that two different standard deviation distributions having the same mean value are equivalent. It would be possible, then, to reduce the standard deviation by changing the distribution of workers at the various working places without changing the mean exposure value. In other words, without taking into consideration the practical implications, individual limits can be respected by rotating the personnel or by reducing the individual working period which would be compensated by increasing the number of workers. The collective dose would remain the same, which would justify the use of the concept of collective exposure. 3. "RADIATION PROTECTION" QUALITY INDEX AT VARIOUS MINING SITES Each mining site is responsible for its own collective dose, but it is also responsible for producing a certain amount of uranium metal in the ore sent to the uranium mill. These two quantities must be brought together in order to establish the "radiation protection" quality index of a mining site. This quality index, called-specific irradiation (Ir) is expressed in rem.ton -1 for external irradiation, in mJoule.ton-1 for inhaled [a]-energy, and in Ci.ton -1 for inhaled radon *. The specific irradiation represents the health hazard which must be associated to the extraction of one ton of uranium metal. Figures la and lb present a system of coordinates for which the axis of the abscisses is graduated in tons of U metal and the axis of the ordinates is graduated in units of collective exposures. In the EEC, the regulation is based on the measurement of the amounts of radon 222 inhaled.

"The development process of Metal Resources Technical and Economic Evaluation Expert System (MRTEEES) is introduced in the aspects of requirements analysis, design of the expert system, main functions of the expert system and features of the expert system. The system is based on C/B/S mixed mode and uses ASP.NET technology with .Net Framework being chosen as the development platform and metal resources database providing data support at the bottom layer. The system is an auxiliary management system for metal resources technical and economic evaluation and has the basic functions of auxiliary decision analysis, metal resources database management, data management and comprehensive query. Technical and economic evaluation model can be set up by users independently according to at which stage a project is, mainly including exploration stage, development stage and production stage, and according to the mining methods, for example underground mining, surface mining and in-situ leaching mining. Then, the technical and economic evaluation parameters can be generated. By inputting the value of each parameter in a simple and convenient way, the evaluation results can be directly calculated out and shown in the form of diagrams among others, and feasibility evaluation report can also be automatically generated, making the technical and economic evaluation process accurate and efficient. As the system can achieve the functions of scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, shareholder’s returns analysis, horizontal comparison of different projects, it can improve the ability of project senior decision makers for rapid response to the rival and meet the demand of pricing negotiations. IntroductionWith the arrival of a new round of industrialization upsurge in both developing and developed countries, growth of demand for metal resources is entering a new stage. Population involved in the new industrialized countries is about four times that of all previous industrialized countries, implying resource consumption increases dramatically both in speed and in quantity. It is a must to seize the strategic opportunity of developing and utilizing metal resources around the world to lay abundant resource base for national industrialization. Objectively speaking, global configuration of metal resources is an inevitable tend. Presently, many issues, for example, resources exploration, mining, merge of mining companies, metal trades, mining financing, etc., generally show the feature of globalization. For the reality that competition for metal resources is becoming fiercer, industry standards of mineral resources will undoubtedly be improved. Occupying large scale mineral resources with high grade and developing them with low cost is the base for the survival of mining companies and metal resources merchants. With the growing demand of global investment in mineral resources exploration, which is at the upstream of the industry chain, geological exploration industry is promising. In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). The direct cost of the reagents, while significant, Is only a part of their economic effect. Reagents determine the flotation rates and the selectivity of the mineral separation. In flotation practice, mineral selectivity can be achieved through the addition of various reagents that can control the wettablllty of a particular mineral In the flotation pulp. The reagents which will generally optimize the flotation process are commonly classified Into three distinctive categories: collectors frothers and modifiers. Large tonnages of metal sulphide concentrates which are the source of most of the common base metals are produced economically by fairly standard flotation techniques. The advent of modern technology coupled with the necessity of processing finely disseminated and complex ores of low grade has Increased the need for utilization of non traditional and high selective chemicals reagents for the economic recovery of metals and raw materials. Mining operations in developing countries continue to progress at a rapid growth as many countries mine and process both metallic and nonmetallic ores. The total mine production of base metals, precious metals, Iron ores and coal In developing countries In Africa, Asia and South America has been much higher as compared to the western world production In terms of tonnage and dollar value. Global capital Investments In mining during 1991-95 Is $ 55.1 billion and It Is anticipated that the development of new and specialty reagents may be concentrated In the processing of aluminum , copper, precious metals and Industrial minerals with special reference to potash, phosphates, kaolin and silica sands.(1) The challenge for the design and development of new specialty chemicals Is dependent on Its cost performance and environmental acceptability. Information on the theory and application on the development of mining chemicals has been reviewed In several conference proceedlngs,(2-4) publications(5) and also discussed by several Individual authors.(1,6-10) These publications serve as a comprehensive reference source on the reagents used In several flotation processes. This paper discusses the present trend in the use of specialty mining chemicals In diversified mining operations on several mineral systems with particular reference to sulfide ore systems. The necessity to expose these specialty chemicals through aggressive marketing techniques In mining operations In many developing countries Is also presented. SPECIALTY CHEMICALS Specialty mining chemicals, like other specialty chemicals, share common business characteristics that transcend geographic boundaries. They are manufactured 1n a few selected areas, generally expensive relative to commodity chemicals, shipped and compete globally and usually require specialized knowledge for proper use. Specialty mining chemicals are relative newcomers to chemical markets. The vast majority of mining chemicals are derived from products that are less than two decades old. Traditional collectors and frothers have been available for a considerably longer time. The emphasis on adding value to existing products and byproducts Is responsible for several characteristic features of the mining chemicals business. Most raw materials for these chemicals are related to oil and gas byproducts, chemical refineries, pulp and paper mills and all chemical manufacturers. Introduction The Summitville Mine located in southwestern Colorado is an example of the potential impact that natural weathering and mining activities can have on environmental quality. Acid rock drainage and metals leaching from active and historic mine districts are a major environmental problem facing the mining industry today. Sulfide ore exposed naturally or during mining operations has the potential to produce leachates that contain high concentrations of dissolved metals. These leachates can affect the quality of plant and animal health in surface water used for agriculture, recreation and human consumption. Pintail Systems has developed biological processes for detoxification of cyanide in heap-leached spent ore and process solutions. During application of spent ore cyanide bio-detox processes we have also observed a substantial reduction in many of the leachable metals in biotreatment solutions. These field observations of soluble metal reduction led us to propose that metal bio-mineralization should be a secondary treatment goal of spent ore detox in Focused Feasibility Studies (FFS) for the Summitville Mine. In the FFS (described in a companion paper) for Summitville, spent ore from the heap leach pile (HLP) was loaded into PVC test columns (six inch X ten foot) and was leached with bacteria/nutrient solutions. Two treatment designs were studied: a standard percolation leach (aerobic) and a saturated leach design where the ore was saturated with the heap leach solution to which bacteria and nutrients were applied in a continuous biotreat leach. The bacteria for all column treatment tests were isolated from the spent ore at depth through the Heap Leach Pile (HLP) in the saturated and unsaturated zones. Bacteria isolated from the heap material were tested for cyanide oxidation capacity and were submitted to a bioaugmentation program to improve reaction kinetics and metals tolerance. The final treatment population consisted of several distinct species including aerobic heterotrophs, facultative anaerobes and sulfate-reducing bacteria. The remineralization of soluble metals was observed through a decrease in copper in column leachate solutions and the formation of observable mineral products on ore surfaces in the columns. Several of the tests were run in clear PVC columns to facilitate observation of mineral formation. The column ore contents were photographed before, during and after the biotreatment process which ranged from 10 to 20 days for each test column. Ores were collected from each column after the treatment was complete and were submitted for SEM and TEM study at two laboratories - the USGS SEM Laboratory in Denver, Colorado and the City College of New York SEM laboratory. Treatment Process Description Numerous species of bacteria, fungi and yeasts are capable of accumulating many times their weight in soluble metals. Both living and dead biomass are effective in removing soluble metals from waste streams containing gold, silver, chromium, cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, cobalt and others. Soluble metals may also be immobilized in soils by natural or engineered biomineralization reactions. Several commercial processes using biological reactions are being applied on an industrial scale for metal remediation. Bacteria found in natural and extreme environments have developed a wide variety of metabolic functions to adapt to these environments. These natural microbial functions contribute to global mineral cycling that continuously forms, transforms and degrades minerals and metals in the environment. Biomineralization is described as a surface process associated with microorganism cell walls where the remineralization occurs. The biogeochemical activities initiated by microorganisms in ores, soils, surface and groundwater environments can dominate the formation and transformation of those mineral environments.

OCAW appreciates the opportunity given to us by the sponsors of this Conference to present our position and policies on the issue of radiation hazards in mining. Our principal concern is the health impact that the mining of uranium has on our members. OCAW represents 1,500 underground uranium miners and more than 10,000 underground miners with 3,000 in the Rocky Mountain region. The U.S. Public Health Service has determined through mortality studies that the number one cause of death among uranium miners is lung cancer. It was also determined that exposure to radon daughters and mine dust correlates with the lung cancer experience of uranium miners. Data from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration has also shown that not only uranium underground miners, but all underground miners, are exposed to radon daughters -- especially underground miners in the Rocky Mountain region. It is our position that any OCAW underground miner is at potential lung cancer risk. The dosages of radon daughters that our miners are exposed to are very many times the background levels of radon exposures in the communities where they live. We are also aware that cigarette smoking accelerates the onset of lung cancer; however, it has to be clear that the available scientific evidence shows that alpha radiation does initiate lung cancer and that cigarette smoke, as a recognized co-carcinogen, promotes cancer already initiated by radiation. It is true that cigarette smoke increases the risk of cancer significantly for miners exposed to radon, but nonsmoking miners have experienced lung cancer rates twice as high as the comparable members of the U.S. population. OCAW's position is that the occupational regulatory agencies should concentrate on the exposures that can be controlled; that is, occupational exposures rather than life-style exposures. Our Union has maintained a consistent posture in relation to carcinogens in the workplace -- that is, exposure to cancer-causing agents should be limited to the [lowest feasible level]. OCAW has interpreted lowest feasible level as the lower limit of detection of the collection and analytical method used to detect the carcinogen. Our posture is based on the available scientific information on carcinogenesis. We have asked the scientific community, many times, to provide us with safe levels of exposure to carcinogenic substances, including radon daughters. The answer has been: "We cannot determine levels of exposure low enough to assure that no cancer will occur." In short, there is not a "safe threshold" for any carcinogen. This statement does not come from one of the few so-called "pro-labor scientists," it comes from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. I don't need to be a scientific sage, then, to conclude that the lowest level of exposure corresponds to the lowest risk of developing cancer. That is, then, our policy on exposure to carcinogens. It seems there has been an attempt to ignore the fact that lung cancer in uranium miners is the principal cause of death. Uranium miners are no exception from workers exposed to carcinogens. Our policy applies to them. Uranium miners should be exposed to the lowest feasible level of radon daughters and any decrease in the permissible exposure level is a decrease in their lung cancer risk. Accordingly, OCAW has petitioned the Department of Labor for a new permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in uranium mining, which lowers the current exposure standard from 4 Working Level Months (WLM) per year to 0.7 Working Level Months per year. We made our demand to the Department of Labor on April 20, 1980. We are still awaiting action from the Federal Government on our petition. OCAW is also very concerned with other important health impacts of uranium mining. We are concerned with a rate of disabling accidents and fatalities which is twice as high as the same rate in other underground mines, excluding coal. We are also concerned with the rate of respiratory disease fatalities among uranium miners which is almost four times the rate among a comparable U.S. population. We have expressed those concerns when the U.S. Senate proposed a Federal Compensation Act for uranium miners. That proposal, by Senator Dominici of New Mexico, found a quiet death in two Congressional sessions. In conclusion, our position on lung cancer induced by radon daughters is the same position we have taken with all other industrial carcinogens: The lower the exposure, the lower the risk. OCAW is demanding a drastic decrease of the permissible exposure limits. OCAW will never accept that a segment of our membership which mines uranium should take the lion's share of the risk while the uranium mining companies take all the benefits.

Discussion by S. Serata and K. Fuenkajorn Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976, 1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardnerand Shrinivasan, 1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability. Stress measurement The key issue is how to form the global stress envelope to make the gate entries safe for production. Therefore, measuring the stress condition of the ground around the mine opening is critically important to solving the cutter-roof problem, regardless of the method applied. With regard to the stress measurement, there is a serious question as to the reported stress state of [6 i = -51.7 MPa (-7499 psi), G2 = -44.5 MPa (-6458 psi) and 63 = -30.8 MPa (-4465 psi)]. It is mechanically impossible to have such a stress state at any location in the mine ground since the known initial vertical stress [o,,] is less than or equal to 800 psi. There may be a large stress state in the [61] direction, but that is possible only at the expense of the [63] value. Having the above stress tensors in the mine is simply impossible. The questionable, reported stress values could be attributed to the application of the overcoring method, which tends to produce erroneously large stress values in the extremely nonelastic mine ground. Stress control method The paper should be considered as a major contribution demonstrating the limitation of the yield pillar method. At the same time, the paper does not disprove the stress control method. However, in comparing the paper with stress control studies conducted in other similar failing grounds, the stress control method appears to be able to solve the problem more effectively. Therefore it is advisable that the mine not give up its efforts to solve the problem. However, history has shown that technology applied with correct logistics and strategy makes a significant difference. Never has the minerals industry faced such daunting challenges and been in such need of a step change. Application of autonomous systems has been steadily increasing in the minerals industry. Automation technology has changed the mining value chain from exploration to mineral processing and refining. The future state will only see additional in-roads of automation into more processes and the whole system design. To better understand the near-future potential of automation, it is useful to explore and review the current state of automation in minerals development. A review of the state of automation research is given. The review will consider three critical areas: automation technology, system’s engineering and management processes around automation, and the role of human factors engineering in automated and semi-automated systems. The review ends with a discussion on the social and political risks of automation in terms of shared value and sustainable development.

INTRODUCTION Large areas of the United States coal reserves have been undermined by room-and-pillar mining over the past century. These abandoned mines generally cause subsidence of the ground surface many decades after mining. Reports from England (1) where there is a longer history of room-and-pillar mining indicate that mines abandoned two centuries ago may still be causing subsidence, and causing surface destruction to urban areas or farm lands that have been developed in the interim. The devastation wrought by subsidence, both in terms of property loss and societal disruption is enormous. The authors discuss here the methods by which subsidence in abandoned mines may be controlled. Two distinctly different subsidence control technologies have been developed in the U.S. for abandoned coal mines. These are referred to as (1) Point Sup- port methods, and (2) Areal Backfilling. As the names imply, point support methods are used to protect individual structures, or even individual foundation elements of structures, whereas areas backfilling techniques may be applied to protect entire neighborhoods or urban districts hundreds of acres in extent. Both point support methods and areal backfilling have specific sub-categories of techniques that may be applied under different conditions as appropriate. POINT SUPPORT METHODS Point support methods are characteristically employed by civil engineers chartered with the design of a new structure or the protection of an existing structure. The subsidence control measures are only a part of a larger project, the safety of which must be assured to a degree of near certainty. The costs of point support methods involve a large number of bore-holes and the use of expensive materials in relatively small quantities. There exist several dozen point support methods, which operate either to support the underground cavities, controlling subsidence, or to isolate the structure from the effects of subsidence if it should occur. The latter methods usually involve deep foundations through the mine opening supporting the structure on the underlying strata. Our concern will be with the former method to support underground cavities to prevent subsidence. Gravel Columns and Associated Methods Gravel columns may be placed in the mine opening using the methods shown in [Figure 1]. Boreholes are drilled through the mine strata, and gravel poured down the borehole to form a pile on the mine floor. When the tip of the pile contacts the mine roof, it is rodded down to spread the pile, and permit additional gravel to be placed. The objective is to place as much gravel as possible in the mine opening, and to achieve firm contact with the mine roof. The gravel pile acts to reduce subsidence by three mechanisms. The filling of a significant fraction of the open mine volume reduces the amount of potential subsidence simply by killing open volume within the mine. In effect, the extraction ratio has been reduced by introducing the volume of gravel. The toe of the gravel pile abuts against nearby pillars, providing lateral support and protection against pillar deterioration. In effect, the height of the pillars has been slightly reduced by burying their lower portions. Finally, some direct support is provided to the roof strata, reducing the roof span and enhancing stability. The gravel column method may be used in a variety of applications, and with materials other than gravel. For example, gravel columns may be placed in a close line around the perimeter of the building to form a continuous gravel wall. The interior of the site may then be completely filled with sand, slurry or other material. Alternatively, a lean concrete may be used in place of gravel, so that the piles achieve significant structural capacity. The grout column, shown in [Figure 2], begins with the installation of a conventional gravel column which is placed around a grout pipe that extends through the borehole into the mine opening. When the gravel column is in place, portland cement grout is injected in stages. At each stage, sufficient grout is injected to fill the interstices in the gravel to build a column perhaps two meters in diameter and a meter tall. The group pipe is then raised one meter, and after the previously injected grout has set, the next stage of grout is injected. The process builds a column of grouted gravel to the

However, the physical properties of resistant minerals, such as cassiterite, gold, beryl, chromite, zircon and others, interfere with both of these requirements. Therefore, the degree of sample homogeneity that can reasonably be achieved in sampling and sample preparation must be considered. Subsequently, the understanding of its effects on analytical data quality and the consequences on data interpretation will provide a basis for understanding the problems common to exploration as an interdisciplinary science. Complaints about poor and inadequate analytical performance are not confined to exploration geochemistry. They are a common feature in mining and metallurgy and wherever sampling and analysis of "grains" are concerned - the "nugget" or "grain size effect." The "grain size" effect Poor analytical reproducibility is normal for gold and a well-defined group of other elements usually found in resistant placer minerals. Those who use and interpret geochemical data must realize and appreciate the chemical, the physicochemical, the physical and the mineralogical properties of the elements and their minerals. Especially for the "placer" minerals and their elements, such comprehensive interpretation is crucial. The most important factor to consider is the behavior of a mineral and its metal component(s) during weathering and their integration into the sampled medium, in exploration mostly sediments and soils. (Data interpretation for samples of water, gas, to a certain extent rock, follows different patterns.) A mineral may be chemically and physically stable or it may easily disintegrate physically or decompose chemically, or any combination of such processes, at varying degrees. The breakdown products, in turn, may or may not, interreact with the environment. If the nature of an element or a mineral predestines it for a heterogenous distribution in the sample medium, then nature, size and number of grains likely to occur should be considered in relation to the sample portion taken for analysis. This allows the estimation of their effect on analytical precision and accuracy. Elaborate and sophisticated statistical calculations exist on this subject. But these approaches do not cope with the complexity of the natural surface environment. The miner alogical, chemical and environmental behavior of elements and minerals can be estimated but not calculated. However, the mineral grain sizes and their influence on analytical precision can be precisely calculated if certain conditions, assumptions and idealizations are made. If the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of minerals and elements are understood, such calculations demonstrate the grain (or nugget) effects that mineral properties and (geo)chemical behavior of minerals and elements cause on the precision and accuracy of geochemical analysis through their influence on sample homogeneity. Two other factors that influence the sample homogeneity and the nugget effect are the efficiency of sample preparation and the sample portion taken for analysis. In this way, certain element- or mineral-specific parameters can be established as a guide for the sampling program. The information, for example, may assist in determining sampling procedures in the field, especially the sample weight to be taken for "representative samples." Also, it may help assess whether analytical data, as provided by the laboratory, are acceptable. Finally, it may help determine the approach in data interpretation. However, all such simplified calculations are based on idealized, that is, unreal assumptions and conditions. As such, they represent one extreme end on the scale of probabilities. The reality is found somewhere away from this extreme, towards homogeneity. An example from a study of an eluvial gold prospect may be given for illustration: •Original sample weight: 20 kg (44 lbs) of rock gravel, crushed and ground to -0.18 mm (-80 mesh). •Au content: 20 grains of Au, average size of about 0.5 mm3 (0.03 cu in.) each = 7.5 mg each, making a total of about 150 mg Au in the sample = 7.5 ppm Au. Assumptions •Au occurs in the sample as free, discrete grains only. •Not more than one grain, if any, goes into each sample split (analyte) portion (20 grains of 7.5 mg Au each). •Analysis of original rock sample: 100 g sample for analysis, 20 kg/100 g = 200 samples 20 samples with 1 grain each: result, - 75 ppm Au. 180 samples with no grain: result, 0 ppm Au chances 1:9 •10 g sample for analysis:

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service is entering the seventh year of monitoring caves for the presence of radon and radon daughter products. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the radiation monitoring program at Mammoth Cave National Park, and to present some of the results of this program. Mammoth Cave National Park completed five years of collecting data on May 1, 1981: although Mammoth Cave encompasses approximately 361 km of underground passageways, this paper will concentrate on only a 2.2 km section of the cave known as the Historic Tour. Included in this paper is a discussion of the methods the Nations Park Service uses to protect employees from exposure to alpha radiation. MONITORING METHODS The National Park Service monitors cave atmospheres utilizing the procedures provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration in their Radiation Monitoring Training Manual (Anon., 1976). This procedure is described as the Kusnetz Method (Kusnetz, 1956) of radon daughter monitoring. Due to the length of the tours at Mammoth Cave, it has been determined to be the most practical procedure. The Historic Tour is a 2.2 km (1.4 mile) loop through passageways ranging in size from 18 m high by 12 m wide, to 0.9 m high by 0.6 m wide. Seven five minute walking samples were taken for this cave tour by drawing at least 10 1 of air through a 25 mm fiberglass filter utilizing a Monitaire Sampler Pump. The radon daughter concentration levels were determined using an alpha scintillation counter to measure the alpha activity on the filter paper. The Monitaire Sampler Pump was calibrated each day prior to monitoring the cave tour and the scintillation counter was calibrated by procedures described by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (Beckman, 1975) at six month intervals. Guidelines established by the National Park Service and approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration require weekly sampling when the average working level exceeds 0.30 (NPS-14, 1980). A working level is an atmospheric concentration of radon (Rn-222) daughters which will deliver 1.3 x 10 5 MeV of alpha energy per liter of air in decaying through Ra C' (Po-214). The Historic Tour has continually exceeded the 0.30 working level average and has been monitored weekly. Generally, only radon daughter working level data has been collected on the Historic Tour due to limited personnel. However, other special measurements of the uncombined fractions of radon daughters with wire screens, tsivoglou method for radon daughter sampling (Thomas modification, 1970), and thoron daughter monitoring. These special measurements have not been routine due to time limitations involved in radon daughter sampling of other occupied portions of the cave. SUMMARY OF DATA The Historic Tour has been the most consistantly monitored tour since elevated levels of alpha radiation were found to exist at Mammoth. Cave. It is also the only natural entrance to the main sections of the cave and provided an opportunity to study man made actions upon the natural entrance. For these reasons the Historic Tour was isolated for study. Beginning October 10, 1977, and ending November 20, 1977, a pilot project was undertaken involving the Historic Tour and the practice of covering the natural entrance to this tour with sheet metal in the winter months. The purpose was to study radiation levels on the Historice Tour while the covers were on and off the natural entrance. In this pilot project, comparisons were made with incast air with covers on and off the entrance, and outcast air with covers on and off the entrance. TABLE 1 Incast air Mean W.L. Decreased 5% Covers off. . . . 1.40 W.L. when covers on The natural entrance was artificially covered in the winter months (Yarborough, 1978) to protect the visitor from the extremely cold incast air, in the first four years of monitoring. The data in Table 1, illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, shows that this action increased the radon daughter working levels on the Historic Tour by 54% when the covers were on the entrance and the airflow was incast. While the air flow was outcast at the natural entrance, it made little difference as to whether the entrance was closed or open. Some interesting findings were observed when

In the late 1950's a low-grade copper ore zone was outlined at the fifty-year-old McIntyre Porcupine Mine in Northern Ontario. Following this an independent copper circuit was installed in the existing gold mill. The nature of the operation decreed that capital expenditure be a minimum. To this end, in order to resolve the problem of storing and grinding two separate ores, it was decided to install a divider in the existing 4000 ton capacity fine ore storage bin and to replace ten conventional feeders with sixteen Mexican feeders. The article describes a successful application of the Mexican type feeder.
