Many of you are familiar with the Washington Metro Project. However, inasmuch as some may not be, and others may want to refresh their memories regarding certain facets of the project, I will cite a few summary details about the rail transit system we are constructing. That summary will also give each of us a common point for departure as I develop the principal thoughts that I want to leave with you. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is an interstate agency established by Compact between the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and approved by the United States Congress. Currently, the Authority has approval to build and operate a 101-mile (162.5 km) regional rapid rail transit system as shown on Appendix A. Of that total, 38 miles (61.2 km) will be in D. C., 32 miles (51.5 km) in Maryland and 30 miles (48.3 km) in Virginia. (Mileage figures, because of rounding error, do not add to 101 miles.) Referring again to the 101-mile total, 48 miles (77.2 km) will be underground, 42 miles (67.6 km) on the surface and 10 miles (16.1 km) on aerial structures. Of the 48 miles (77.2 km) that are underground, 15 miles (24.1 km) are rock tunnel, 14 miles (22.5 km) are earth tunnel, 0.5 miles (0.8 km) 9.s sunken tube and 19 miles (30.6 inn) are cut-and-cover construction. The system will include 86 stations, with 51 of them underground. Referring again to the full 86 stations, 43 will be in D. C., 23 in Maryland and 20 in Virginia. We currently have 37 miles (59.5 km) of line and 41 stations in operations as shown on Appendix B. The restoration of surface mining landscapes requires the (re)creation of ecosystems. In Lusatia (eastern Germany), large-scale open-cast lignite mining operations generated spoil dumps widely consisting of acidified, phytotoxic substrates. Amelioration and rehabilitation measures have been developed and applied to these substrates since the 1950s. However, it is still not clear whether these approaches are sustainable. This paper reports on collaborative research work into the ecological potential of forest ecosystem development on typical minesites in the Lusatian lignite district. At first sight, pine stands on minesites along a chronosequence comprising about 35 years did not show differences when compared with stands on non-mined sites of the general region. Furthermore, with some modification, conceptual models for flora and fauna succession in forest stands on non-mined sites seem to be applicable, at least for the early stages of forest ecosystem development. For example, soil organism abundance and activity at minesites had already reached levels typical of non-mined sites after about 20-30 years. In contrast, mine soils are very different from non-mined soils of the test region. Chemically, mine soil development is dominated by processes originating from pyrite oxidation. Geogenic, i.e. lignitic, soil organic carbon was shown to substitute for some functions of pedogenic soil organic matter. Rooting was hampered but not completely impeded in strongly acidified soil compartments. Roots and mycorrhizae are apparently able to make use of the characteristic heterogeneity of young mine soils. Considering these recent results and the knowledge accumulated during more than 30 years of research on minesite rehabilitation internationally, it can be stated that minesite restoration might be used as an ideal case study for forest ecosystem development starting at "point zero" on "terra nova".

INTRODUCTION During the past decade, disposal of mine and mill waste material has become an increasingly important issue. Problems of structural stability and seepage effects on stability have been well addressed, and significant technological advances have been achieved [(1-4)]. The primary problem currently facing industry in the waste disposal area is environmental protection. The greatest environmental concern is over the amount of seepage or leachate entering the ground or surface water systems. Methods to determine the quantity of water seeping from a tailings pond have also been covered in the literature [(5-23)]. However, much further work is necessary to fully implement these techniques to evaluate tailings pond performance and accurately predict the various influences of disposal management on seepage from mill tailings. This study is an effort to develop those necessary techniques. The partially saturated method of analysis which is discussed here is applicable to most situations involving seepage from waste piles. In a conventional type of tailings pond, a slime layer is ordinarily built up under the ponded area. This material will consolidate slowly from capillary pressures and the weight of material deposited above it. In situations where this consolidation results in a slime layer of lower permeability than the native foundation soil, a partially saturated flow condition will usually exist in the native soil. This will result in a smaller quantity of water entering the ground-water system than would be predicted by saturated flow analysis. The finite-element program used in this study was originally developed by Neuman [(17)] and is called UNSAT2. The program will analyze problems of saturated or unsaturated, steady or nonsteady flow and can be used with a variety of boundary conditions such as constant flux, constant pressure, maximum flux, minimum pressure, and with infiltration, evaporation, and seepage surfaces. The maximum conditions are controlled by exterior factors such as atmospheric conditions; but the actual flow in the porous media is determined by properties of the porous media. Over the past twenty years people throughout the world, but particularly in the United States, have been taking an increasing interest in the environment, sources and causes of pollution, and pollution abatement. Air quality in the United States has been and continues to be an area of primary emphasis. In 1970, the US Congress passed the Clean Air Act and subsequently revised and strengthened it in 1977 with the issuance of the New Source Performance Standards. The Act has been further strengthened with the passage of the 1990 Amendments. By far the largest single source of sulfur dioxide (SO,) pollutants are coal fued electric generating power stations. Hence, a substantial portion of the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) research and equipment installation has been geared to the utility industry. Several competing FGD technologies were touted during the period 1970 to 1990 with varying degrees of success. Subsequently, the more successful technologies have been accepted, revised, and improved to the point that by 1991 third and fourth generation technology is available. A second area of emphasis for FGD has been coal fired industrial boilers. While individually they are much smaller than any electric utility generating station, they do represent a significant source of sulfur pollution. However, due to the size of industrial boilers and their location within industrial and educational complexes, the wet scrubber technology being employed by the utilities is not appropriate for these applications. Hence, fluidized bed combustion (FBC) technology has been developed for the industrial boilers. Since the installation of the first full scale test unit at Georgetown University, several equipment vendors have come forward with an increasing array of more sophisticated FBC units. Currently, FBC technology has matured to the point that the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), in cooperation with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has installed an FBC system on a 250 MW test unit at the Shawnee Power Station in Kentucky.

The heterogeneous distributions of nodule sizes, cover-ages and abundances and the variability of their burial und association with sediments and rock outcrops on the seafloor have emerged as crucial parameters in considering the exploitation potential of the manganese nodules in the central part of the Indian Ocean. Nodules with the long axis measuring from 20 and 40 mm (0.8 and 1.6 in.) account for nearly 60% to 70% of those evaluated from photographic and grab-sample data. In addition, 75% of the nodules (by weight) are between 20 and 60 mm (0.8 to 2.4 in.). The distribution of nodules with abundances ranging from 1 to 20 kg/m2 as well as coverages of 1 % to 90% on the seafloor are important considerations in demarcating the potential areas for nodule mining. The mining of areas with higher concentrations of nodules, such as along slopes associated with less sediment, would result in the enhanced recovery of nodules compared to areas with low nodule concentrations, such as in valleys and plains where thick sediment covers occur. The mining head will encounter substrates such as hard rock exposures, either with or without Fe-Mn encrustations, as well as soft sediment layers in the nodule fields. It must be able to collect buried nodules under sediment cover, and it must be able to negotiate uphill and downhill slopes in mining areas. Mapping prior to mining must delineate areas to he avoided and must define locations to be mined. The requirements suggest that the nodule collector must be a dynamic (active) system with sensors to detect areas of potential nodule concentrations, as well as features that are hazardous (or unfavorable) for mining operations.

It is well known that iron-ore pellets are considered one of the best blast-furnace burden materials used today. The demand for pellets is demonstrated by the increase in pellet output from one million tons in 1955 to approximately 37 million tons in 1964. This growth continues as new plants are placed on-stream each year. The consumer generally specified (1) the acceptable content and range of chemical constituents, (2) a minimum strength determined by some standard testing procedure, (3) the size range of pellets, and (4) perhaps a measure of reducibility.

There is a credible, cogent, and responsible argument that mining can be part of a sustainable future in countries with freely elected governments, transparent and enforceable laws, a closure plan with an adequate bond, and a small handful of other measures. This perspective, built largely upon the understanding of mining as a temporary use of the land, is coupled with a growing understanding of economic diversification as a tool to level out the ‘bust’ side of the boom and bust cycle. There are verifiable signs of progress that the sector has, at least in some venues, begun to embrace this view of ‘sustainability’ both in philosophy and practice. While laudable, there remains a conundrum not yet fully explored. It is conceivable that companies can fulfill all legal requirements, practice corporate responsibility in its broadest and most liberal interpretation, and yet leave behind, after the gates are closed and the lights turned off, a situation which is not only unsustainable, but far worse off than before mining started. Having observed this outcome, repeatedly, some critics have concluded that all mining should be stopped. Others recommend that it be vastly curtailed until regulatory regimes are re-vamped, communities fully empowered, and companies brought to heel. Yet others, including many within the industry, are looking to hold back this dark prospect with peer pressure, branding and competition for good will. In this paper, I propose to focus on this discontinuity, that gap wherein the chain of logic breaks and reasonable policies, reason-able choices, reasonable actions, may fail to deliver expected results. I suggest that any meaningful definition of post-closure sustainability must include the concept of human welfare, and increasingly, human security, over and above meeting the requirements of law, beyond retaining shareholder value and reputation, beyond discussions of subsequent land use and diversified employment. I suggest that self-determination, that ability of a people to hold for themselves the vision of their own future, and to have a sense of their power to implement it, may be both the most difficult and the single most important determinant of long-term sustainability in a community. The particulars will vary; a Canadian junior or an Australian multinational, a highly regulated state in the American west or a ‘failing state’ in Africa’s west, gold or sand and gravel. But the recommendation is the same: this must be a collective endeavor, a shared responsibility involving some combination of government, companies, communities, local and international NGOs (non-governmental organizations), each contributing in the ways most able.

About 100 mine-waste dumps from past metal exploration and mining in Colorado and Montana were sampled using surficial-sampling methods for laboratory studies of the minus-2-mm fraction. In the laboratory, the composite samples were split into l00g samples that were leached to assess their acid-generation potential and associated release of potentially toxic metals that may degrade water quality in the headwaters of the Animas River watershed in Colorado and the Boulder River watershed in Montana. Two leach methods were studied: a passive leach using de-ionized water, and a more aggressive leach following the EPA-1312 method. The resulting pH values of the leachates using both methods are comparable. The concentrations of sulfate and several, but not all, dissolved or water-soluble metals are higher in the EPA-1312 leachates than in the passive leachates; however, the overall trends of the data are very similar. The passive leach method is less labor intensive and may be more representative of the natural weathering process occurring on the mine-waste dumps, simulating the natural precipitation and snowmelt. Three chemical characteristics of mine wastes studied here provide a relative ranking of mine-waste dumps for the purpose of determining priority for removal or remediation. These characteristics are: net acid production (NAP), sum of dissolved toxic metals (?As+Cd+Cu+Pb+Zn), and dissolved iron in leachates. Ranking can be done evaluating plots of NAP versus the sum of dissolved toxic metals, and NAP versus dissolved iron. These two plots serve as a basis for relative ranking of polymetallic-vein and acid-sulfate mine wastes studied. This ranking scheme may apply to mine wastes from production of other deposit types in other watersheds.

Introduction Loss prevention programs have become absolutely necessary at any precious metals producing property. In the past eight years, one security company, specializing in precious metals mine, mill, and refinery security, has been involved in investigations at gold and silver properties that have resulted in 62 criminal convictions. Of those, all but five were employees, former employees, contract employees, or vendors for the company. Several of the cases involved losses of more than $1 million. The largest number of employees prosecuted from one investigation was 17. A recent case resulted in 12 criminal prosecutions and, several years ago, one involved an additional 12 criminal prosecutions. The most serious theft problem facing precious metals mines is employee theft. Is is estimated that 95% of the dollar losses from precious metals thefts can be attributed to employees. This does not mean there is no robbery or burglary exposure. There have been successful robberies, burglaries, and extortion cases. Most mining companies, though, provide better protection against external theft than from internal theft. That is one reason employee theft has reached epidemic proportions. Any product can be stolen No product is immune to theft. Precious metals investigations have involved the theft of high grade ore, dore, bullion, concentrates, precipitates, loaded steel wool, loaded carbon, and sump cleanup. Over a period of several years, this author's security agency has documented the theft of more than 22.5 t (25 st) of load carbon. Most mining companies do not protect the number one adsorption tank or the loaded carbon screens, which frequently leads to losses. Precipitates, electrowinning tank sludge, sump material, and concentrates are usually afforded lit¬tle protection because mine management believes it is too difficult to process. There are custom mills throughout the United States that will process any form of precious metals with no questions asked. This has become a particular problem since the certificate of ownership requirement has been eliminated by most states. Due to the large number of gold mines coming on line, many mine managers are being recruited from base metal mines, where primary security problems involve the theft of tools and company property. These managers do not understand the unique security problems associated with precious metals production. Consequently, they usually forego many security needs in the interest of economy. Unfortunately, numerous cases are on file where mining companies have suffered large losses because their physical security and their security procedures were not adequately addressed when the property was in its planning stages. Drilling of small diameter blast holes in the conventional tunnel driving system or mining operation still consumes a significant part of the time and money required to extend an opening in rock. The use of pneumatic drills for most small hole applications has been the dominant tool used by miners and tunnel men alike throughout the world. But now, a, trend has been started that is showing major inroads into the traditional areas of pneumatics drilling for all types of rocks. Operators dealing in very soft materials, such as coal, salt or potash, traditionally had the option to use hydraulic power for their drilling tools. Twelve to fifteen years ago, drillers in medium hard, but nonabrasive rock extended their drill machine option by helping to develop a drill that still used air to power the hammers, but relied on hydraulic power for the rotational torque and feed thrust. (1) This was a significant step forward, particularly for those who drilled in rocks that were compatible to rotary-percussion bits. However, this application was in fact somewhat limited to the limestone and dolomite formation of mid-United States and the softer sediments in Europe. Now high performance rock drills have been developed, using all-hydraulics for both the hammer and rotation, that have many advantages over the conventional pneumatic systems. In two previous papers on this subject, (2)(3) this author reviewed in detail: 1) the characteristics of each of the manufacturer's products that were on the market; 2) The specific advantages of the all-hydraulic drilling systems; 3) Data from the applications of these drilling systems that was in use; 4) What was needed to further develop this drilling system and utilize its potential in the mining or tunnelling cycle. The flooding of open pits is now receiving considerable attention from the mining industry as an option that may minimize environmental impacts, particularly when anoxia in pit-lake deep waters can effectively eliminate oxidation of pit-wall sulfides. This paper describes a state-of-the-art, coupled physical-geochemical pit-lake model. The model is used to verify that a controlled, two-stage infilling of the open pit at the Kori Kollo gold mine, southeast of La Paz, Bolivia, would result in a cost-effective, environmentally responsible closure strategy. By filling the pit initially with highly saline surface waters and naturally saline deep groundwater and then capping with fresh river water, a very stable and strongly stratified pit lake will be developed. In addition, the stratification will result in the isolation of metal-rich saline bottom waters from surface waters of good quality. Results of this model provide defensible predictions of the physical stability and evolution of water quality in the Kori Kollo pit lake over time. The model results indicate that anoxic conditions will develop below the fresh-saline water boundary within one to two years, followed by the rapid onset of sulfate-reducing conditions in the bottom waters. Hydrogen sulfide produced by sulfate reduction will readily react with dissolved metals to form highly insoluble metal sulfides. The process results in the gradual removal of metals from the water column and the concomitant improvement of water quality over time. A notable benefit of this strategy is that it can be fully integrated with other mine site closure options as well as future environmental-management strategies. The proposed plan allows for the safe isolation of saline waters, the potential for passive treatment in anoxic bottom waters of ARD seepage from other mine site operations, should they arise, and a repository for future reactive wastes that could be effectively isolated in a physically and chemically stable environment.

INTRODUCTION Estimation of capital and operating costs for mines and mills has long been a necessary ingredient of feasibility studies, and though many practitioners have successfully used "rules of thumb" and factor estimating methods for many years, a great deal of work is usually required to prepare an initial estimate and/or to update or revise such an estimate. Development of comprehensive mining and milling cost models during the 1970's by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and by Canadian workers (O'Hara and Mullar) provided the basis for feasibility-level cost estimates, but the numerous equations and the apparent rigor and complexity involved in preparing a project estimate using these models has discouraged many, if not most, potential users. Their acceptance was also hindered by a broad misunderstanding by many engineers in the minerals industries who had little exposure to such procedures, and by a possibly inadequate level of explanation or documentation of the parametric approach to cost estimating. The preliminary nature of most databases, geologic/engineering/ and market, available to the engineer or analyst during the early stages of a mineral project is a universal problem. Basing corporate mega-investment decisions or even individual equipment selection decisions on the usual "SWAG’s has always been a risky practice, but in the current business environment, the "guesstimates" are almost 'verboten', and are certainly becoming antiquated with the advent of both the described models, the ubiquitous microcomputer, and the nearly-ubiquitous hybrid species known as the "computerized engineer". Engineers have almost always sought techniques of cost estimation that can be applied and justified when geologic and engineering information for a mining project is preliminary and incomplete. The answer, in some cases, is the "parametric" approach. Equations, based on actual, past experience are developed to relate capital and operating costs to major physical variables such as the rate of mining or milling, with modifiers for such details as mining method, process characteristics, methods of construction, or types of equipment . Cost Engineering Standards Five major types of fixed capital cost estimates have been defined by the American Association of Cost Engineers : 1. Order-of-Magnitude estimate based on previous cost data and minimal knowledge. usually a "ratio estimate" with no better than +/- 30% accuracy. 2. In today?s mining environment, improving production, performance, productivity and profitability is crucial. Production, ancillary, plant and shipping equipment need to be monitored and controlled by online systems delivering production statistics and real-time information to everyone involved, including equipment operators. Traditional systems currently in use today, operate in an iterative mode constantly switching between scheduling and execution. However, the real world tends to change in ways that invalidate such advance schedules. Agent based computing has been hailed as the most significant breakthrough in software development and the new revolution in software. Agent systems are being used in an increasingly wide variety of applications, including complex mission critical systems such as Air Traffic Control. This paper presents the possible ways that multi-agent systems can be applied to mine production and rehabilitation scheduling problems with focus on real time fleet management, plant and equipment performance monitoring, downtime and delay reporting, stockpile management, personnel and equipment tracking and product distribution and transportation.

Cost reduction programs can focus on total cost or unit cost, but unit cost is usually the principal objective. The production cost per unit is: [Unit cost = Total cost Production volume] Consequently, any activity that reduces the total cost or increases the production volume will reduce the unit cost. Production volume is increased by (1) maximizing the availability of the production equipment and (2) maximizing equipment performance during periods of operation. Most operations managers routinely focus on volume because the factors influencing volume are generally well understood and congruent with the managers' technical skills. In fact, production volume (as a percentage of maximum achievable capacity) is widely recognized as one of the most significant measures of operational performance.

CANMET has developed a simple yet very effective tracer gas method to test the efficiency of stench gas emergency warning systems which can easily be performed by mine personnel. This test method uses sulphur hexafluoride (SF,) as a surrogate for such stench gases as ethyl mercaptan. The test has many advantages: it is non-disruptive to production because SF, is odourless, colourless; it is safe to use as it is inert and only a small volume, insufficient to reduce oxygen levels, is necessary to dope the air with a measurable concentration; and most importantly it provides definitive results to assess the adequacy of the warning system. Specific findings of these tests have included, over doping sections of the mine and subsequent production loss due to sickness, the warning being ignored, the injection period being too short, excessive dispersion, and inadequate notification times. The simple test protocol involves releasing a known volume of the SF, under similar circumstances to those of the stench gas, and then sampling for its presence downstream. These samples are collected in air-tight syringes which are then analyzed in a laboratory with a gas chromatograph. By direct proportion, between the size of the stench and tracer gas releases, it is possible to convert the SF, concentration into equivalent stench gas concentrations profiles. From these, it is possible to define, the initial arrival time of the gas, the time it takes to reach a "target" notification concentration, whether the gas peak will exceed TWAEV, STEV and CEV exposure limits, and the duration of the peak above these levels. Since 1993, this test protocol has been employed a total of eight times on four different Canadian mine properties and the results are being used to optimize the stench gas release system with respect to volume of gas used, duration of injection, and number of injection locations.

During 1992 a number of papers were published on aspects of respiratory disease in US underground coal miners. These included reports on trends in prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis, the risks of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis in relation to dust exposure, and the relationship between lung disease other than pneumoconiosis and dust exposure. The intent of this paper is to provide a summary of the essential findings from these investigations. PREVALENCE AND INCIDENCE OF COAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is usually detected in living miners through use of the chest x-ray. Deposits of dust in the lung, and the fibrotic tissue reactions to the dust, are manifested on the x-ray as small and large opacities. These abnormalities are quantified into degrees of severity using a standardized classification scheme (the International Classification of Radiographs of the Pneumoconioses of the International Labour Office). For small opacities, the scheme provides for a four-point scale of abnormality (0, 1, 2, 3), reflecting increasing profusion of the opacities on the x-ray. In this report, category 1 or greater small rounded opacities (CWP 1+) represents the earlier radiographic stages of pneumoconiosis. Large opacities, indicate the later and often disabling stage of pneumoconiosis, usually referred to as progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Information collected in a national surveillance program for underground coal miners (the Coalworkers' X-ray Surveillance Program (CWXSP)) and a large epidemiologic study (National Study of Coalworkers' Pneumoconiosis (NSCWP)) provide a means to assess trends in CWP prevalence over the years following the reduction in dust levels mandated by the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (FCMHSA). These programs are operated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and are described in detail in Attfield and Althouse (1992) and Attfield and Castellan (1992). Both studies were divided administratively into distinct time periods, and the results shown here reflect that division. Figure 1 shows the prevalence of CWP 1+ as determined from data from the CWXSP, plotted by time period and years in mining. There is evidence of a temporal reduction in prevalence. (The lack of an obvious decline in the early 1970s may be an artifact arising from use of different versions of the standard classification.) Figure 2 provides information in the same format for PMF, and shows a similar trend [ ]

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. Aiming at characteristics of the soft coal roadway engineering geology and deformation, the exposure research of the soft coal seam, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation and program design were carried out. First of all, according to the disclosure, soft coal seam engineering characteristics and geological conditions in Xinxing coal mine were expounded. Meanwhile, the soft coal roadway bolt supporting axial effect, the bolt supporting transverse effect, the anchorage body mechanics strengthening mechanism and problems such as supporting strength have been analyzed. The paper pointed out that the soft coal with very small cohesive force can form a composite anchorage body under the combined action of the anchor cable group, the W-type steel band and the metal net. The soft coal body in the plastic damage area formed anchorage balance arch with a certain bearing capacity and adapted to the rock deformation, and which played an effective support role in the roof outside the balance arch of the roadway. Therefore, the full-cable support technology was proposed. And then, numerical calculation and comparative analysis were conducted on three schemes of the roadway with non-support, with combined support of “anchor bolt and cable” and the full-cable support. The results show that when the roof is supported by anchor cable, it not only controls the continued increase of the subsidence value of the roof, but also effectively suppresses the convergence amount of the floor heave value and the amount on the sidewalls of the roadway. Whether it is from the stress distribution situation, or the viewpoint of plastic zone scope, the combined support of full-cable is more reasonable than that with non-support and that with the combined support of “anchor bolt and cable”. Finally, based on the features of soft coal seam in No.2265 work face of Xinxing coal mine, the relevant support schemes were put forward, and its specific support parameters and cross-section designs were drawn as well.

Specialty sand and bentonite are produced in the plateau province from the Bidahochi Formation near Sanders, Apache County, Arizona. It appears that deposits of both sand and bentonite formed during the Pliocene in fluvial and lacustrine environments, respectively, along the west side of the Defiance Uplift. The bentonite is an alteration product of airborne vitric ash that fell or was washed into lakes. In the Cheto district, the individual bentonite horizons, which range from less than a foot to more than 10 feet thick, are restricted to the position of the medial volcanic member. Bentonite production began at the Allentown mine in 1924 and the Chambers mine in 1926. In 1933 strip mining of the extensive deposits in the Cheto district commenced. Production increased each year to a peak of 270,000 tons in 1957. As a result of the introduction of synthetic zeolites into petroleum refining, production declined. About 40,000 tons of bentonite are currently produced from the district each year. Bentonite is shipped out of State for processing into desiccants, thickeners, and acid-activated clay products. The specialty sand was derived from Permian sandstones and deposited by streams draining the Defiance Uplift. Although stream channels are usually restricted to the upper member of the Bidahochi, stratigraphically above the bentonite horizon, a few actually cut through the bentonite. The well-sorted sand, suitable for use as a proppant in hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells, is localized in elongate lenses along the margins of the channels. These lenses range from 5 to 50 feet in thickness and often extend thousands of feet in both width and length. The sand is about 97 percent silica, has a yield of 40 percent in the minus 20 plus 40 mesh size fraction, and has a roundness of 0.6 to 0.7 on the Krumbein scale. Production of this sand began about 1961. All of the current production, which amounts to about 40,000 tons per year, is sold in the petroleum-producing area near Farmington, New Mexico.

Since the 1975 International Mine Ventilation Congress in Johannesburg there has been a trend in South Africa towards making the mine ventilation departments responsible for monitoring the total environment. This includes the taking of noise and illumination measurements and there is in fact a debate taking place as to whether the departmental title should be changed to 'Environmental Control Department'. The organisers of the 2nd international Mine Ventilation Congress have decided that noise and illumination will not be included as Congress subjects and 'Total Environment' includes only those facets which are open to debate at the Congress. The choice of mine is significant in that while most Congress papers from South Africa will be devoted either to coal mining or to the somewhat unique deep level gold mines, Prieska Copper Mine is a mine which can easily be identified with similar mines in many other parts of the world. The mine is situated some 750 km south west of Johannesburg and about 600 km north east of Cape Town. Current production (ore and waste) is about 340 000 tons per month and the total underground labour force is just over 2 000. The ore body is a massive sulphide, the main minerals being copper and zinc and the method of mining is sub-level open stoping. Daily average surface temperature conditions range from 85°F (29.5°C) dry bulb and 69.8°F (21°C) wet bulb in mid-summer to 42°F (5.5°C) dry bulb and 36.5°F (2.5°C) wet bulb in mid winter. The information presented in-this paper is limited to what can be gathered by mine ventilation staff as part of an on-going exercise and is obviously not as comprehensive as would be the case if a fully equipped research establishment were to become involved. The paper will be divided into three sections 1) Gases 2) Dust 3) Heat In each section statutory and/or other standards will be set down followed by a discussion of assessment and in some cases control methods.
